Anti-poker machine campaigners Fariha Zaima, Jack Spencer and Christine Hill outside the Bridge Inn.
(Joe Mastroianni)
City stands its ground By Lexi Cottee Whittlesea council has refused to issue a permit for another 20 poker machines for the Bridge Inn in Mernda. The refusal follows a council submission to the Victorian Commission for Gaming and Liquor Regulation (VCGLR) in the middle of last year that stated the council would not support the hotel’s application for 20 more electronic gaming machines. The hotel needs approval from the VCGLR and a planning permit from Whittlesea council before additional machines can be installed. The planning permit refusal is the latest in a long-running bid by the club to increase its gaming machines. The pub’s first application for 60 machines
in 2008 was refused by the VCGLR. However, it granted an application for 40 machines a year later. Benmara Pty Ltd, owners of the Bridge Inn Hotel, applied to the VCGLR again in July last year for another 20 machines. Despite a Whittlesea council submission opposing the increase, the application was approved. Now all the pub needs is a planning permit from the council. Residents opposed to the pub’s expansion packed the chambers for last Tuesday’s council meeting in anticipation of the councillors’ verdict. To the dismay of members of the anti-poker machine group Whittlesea Interagency Taskforce on Gambling, Cr Rex Griffen attempted to convince councillors to approve
the permit. He was supported by councillors Christine Stow and Ken Harris. When put to the vote, the permit application was defeated four votes to three. Cr Sam Alessi said he was vehemently opposed to allowing more poker machines in the municipality, labelling the machines “a scourge” and “something we need to eradicate from the community”. He said the application should be refused because the harm EGMs caused was indisputable. “The 40 machines already there are doing enormous harm,” he said. Councillors Alessi, Norm Kelly, Darryl Sinclair and Ricky Kirkham followed the advice of the council’s planning department to refuse the pub’s planning permit application.
Whittlesea Interagency Taskforce on Gambling spokesman Jemal Ahmet said that based on current activity at the hotel, the additional 20 machines would have taken another $3 million out of the local economy, bringing projected annual losses to close to $9 million a year. “We don’t want Whittlesea to become the pokies capital of Victoria. It’s great to see strong leadership from councillors Alessi, Kelly, Sinclair and Kirkham standing up for their community against the interests of big business only concerned with profit,” Mr Ahmet said. To have the council’s decision overturned, Benmara would need to take the matter to VCAT. The Bridge Inn Hotel was contacted for comment.

Islamic colleges buy school sites By Lexi Cottee The Department of Education has sold two vacant primary schools in Dallas to private Islamic colleges. As part of the former state government’s asset sell-off to raise money for infrastructure projects, Dallas Brooks and Dallas North primary schools were sold last year. Dallas Brooks primary, in Kiewa Crescent, was sold on March 11 for $5.19 million, while Dallas North primary, in Warragul Street, sold on May 19 for more than $6.25 million. When Star Weekly requested information about the buyers, a spokesman for the Department of Education and Training said the sites were sold to private education providers. Further inquiries revealed that Sirius College bought the Dallas North primary site to cater for swelling school enrolments. Sirius College’s executive principal, Halid Serdar Takimoglu, said the school had looked for a new site for about two years before making an offer on the old primary school site last year. The college currently has five campuses, including two in Broadmeadows: in Goulburn and Lilliput streets. Mr Takimoglu said the college planned to relocate all primary school pupils from the Eastmeadows (Goulburn Street) campus to the old Dallas North Primary School. About 100 grade 6 pupils were the first to move across to the new campus for
the beginning of the 2015 school year. Sirius College is a non-denominational school that welcomes students from all ethnic and religious backgrounds. But Nail Aykan, general manager of the Islamic Council of Victoria, said most students at the school were Islamic. He said that although the college taught scripture, it was not a religious school.
‘‘
There’s enough demand for these schools in the area
’’
- Nail Aykan
Mr Aykan’s daughter attends the school’s Eastmeadows campus and will eventually move across to the old Dallas North primary site. The Meadow Heights resident said he was not surprised the two state schools were bought by private colleges. “While they’re expensive relative to the area’s blue-collar nature, there’s enough demand for these schools in the area,” he said. Dallas Brooks Primary School was bought by co-educational Islamic school Ilim College. The school has campuses in Dallas and Glenroy. Star Weekly contacted Ilim College for comment but did not receive a response by the time of going to press.

Council an ace for club Lalor Tennis Club members will have two new Rebound Ace courts to play on this month. Work on two of the club’s six courts is on track to be finished within the next few weeks. Whittlesea council has fully funded a $2.4 million overhaul of the club after the Abbott government pulled $300,000 which had been approved by the previous government. In 2013, Shadow infrastructure and transport minister Anthony Albanese said the government would renege on previously approved community infrastructure grants unless councils had already assigned contractors. Whittlesea council had been given approval for $5.83 million of funding to redevelop the Church Street shopping strip, Woodland
Waters sports field and carpark and upgrade Lalor Tennis Club’s facilities but contractors had not been assigned to the tennis club redevelopment. Resurfacing tennis courts 3, 4, 5 and 6 will go to tender this month and a contract has been awarded for design of the club’s pavilion upgrade. The project is expected to be completed in December. Head coach Ian Goolagong said the club had a record 350 members on its books. “It’s a very multicultural club; most of them just want something to do,” he said. “I just ask kids on the street to come in and have a hit.” Lexi Cottee

Morang reserve tribute “Nicola had an infectious effect on all of us,” he said. “I didn’t know Nicola before council, but over that very short period she had an incredible impact on fellow councillors and on the community.” The park is set aside for conservation purposes and is next to a bike trail. Ms Davis’s mother, Teresa Humm, thanked the council on Facebook for “the perfect memorial” for her daughter. “From a small child, conservation has been her passion and this is a very fitting tribute to her, where we as a family can remember her lasting legacy and be so proud of all that she achieved in her shortened life,” she said. News that the council was to name the reserve in Nicola’s honour came on Ms Humm’s 60th birthday. “Surely a gift from heaven,” she wrote.
(Scott McNaughton)
A conservation reserve in South Morang will be named in honour of former Whittlesea councillor Nicola Davis. Ms Davis served as a north ward councillor for almost two years before she died from cancer in April last year. Recognising her services to the community, Whittlesea councillors voted unanimously at their meeting last week to name the 245 Gordons Road reserve the Nicola Davis Conservation Reserve. Fellow north ward councillor and close friend Rex Griffen was visibly moved when he spoke of Ms Davis’s impact on the community. “It was never a race with her – it was all about engagement and participation,” Cr Griffen said. “She assisted many community groups; she got a lot of mums together.” Cr Sam Alessi said he was both delighted and saddened to be naming a park in her honour.

No more noisy bumps in the night By Lexi Cottee A Thomastown speed hump installed six months ago is to be removed. Whittlesea councillors voted against the recommendation of the council’s officers to keep the “road cushions” in Darebin Drive after learning about the plight of one of the street’s residents. Coral Purcell and her husband are retirees and full-time carers of their 39-year-old daughter. When one of six speed humps was installed in front of their family home in August,
Ms Purcell said noise reached “distressing” levels whenever trucks, trailers, four-wheel-drives and utilities passed their house. “It’s enough to wake everyone up,” she said. “Four-wheel-drives are built to navigate them, so they fly over them outside school hours.” The Purcells, who are in their late 60s and early 70s, were losing valuable sleep. Coral started a petition requesting the removal of all the Darebin Drive speed humps. It was lodged with the council last September and contained 50 signatures. As a result of the petition the council
inspired learning
conducted a traffic survey that showed the speed humps had brought about a reduction in speeding and the number of cars and trucks that use Darebin Drive. However, a recent noise survey showed that over a two-week period, average noise levels of 61 decibels were recorded outside the Purcells’ house, just shy of VicRoads’ recommendation that average noise levels not exceed 63 decibels. The results were enough for Cr Rex Griffen to suggest the speed hump’s removal. His motion was passed, and council officers
will now undertake additional independent noise assessments close to the other speed humps and look at alternative “traffic calming” measures such as chicanes and slow points. It would cost the council $20,000 to remove all six speed humps and $800,000 to install roundabouts and slow points. Traffic problems have been an ongoing issue in the street for almost three decades. Kerbs were extended in the late 1990s to manage speeding cars, and then roundabouts were created in 2003 to further stifle lead-foot motorists.

Yan Yean road works pushed up By Lexi Cottee Funding for the duplication of Yan Yean Road has been fast-tracked to allow planning to proceed to construction immediately. Yan Yean MP Danielle Green announced that $400,000 would be brought forward to kick-start planning on the $95 million project. Both the Labor and Liberal parties committed to funding the duplication of a notorious 3.9-kilometre stretch of Yan Yean Road between Diamond Creek and Kurrak roads.
Ms Green said the two-lane undivided road, which services a corridor of increasing residential development in the outer northern suburbs, was dangerous and congested. “The outer northern suburbs deserve safe and reliable roads that get locals to work on time and get them home in one piece,” she said. “Duplicating Yan Yean Road will save time every morning and night. More importantly, it will save lives.” Ms Green said the state government would bring forward funding so the project could start sooner.
The duplication will be designed to improve travel times, reduce congestion, make the road safer for drivers and pedestrians, and improve reliability of bus services. Ms Green said the community would have opportunities to comment on the proposed designs for the road and attend information sessions. VicRoads has already undertaken a planning study to identify land required for the road duplication. Plans include provisions for a four-lane divided road, on-road bicycle paths, paths
for pedestrians, traffic lights at Kurrak Road, removal of low-speed curves between Sutherland Avenue and Howell Road, bus bays, an exclusive bus lane at the Diamond Creek Road approach, and areas for drivers to do U-turns. Ms Green said she was also vehemently advocating for the state to take control of Yan Yean Road north of Kurrak Road so that more upgrades to the road could be completed between Kurrak and Bridge Inn roads. She raised the matter in Parliament last week and is expecting a response soon.
Thieves ‘sweep’ yard first time in Australia at the Victorian Caravan Camping and Touring Supershow, held at the Melbourne Showgrounds last month. Hume police’s crime prevention officer Jacqui Newman said the models were not available for sale at any other dealership. Detective Acting Sergeant Crawford said it wouldn’t be too difficult for the thieves to sell the caravans as unregistered vehicles. “But to take five caravans, we’d imagine someone would need room to store them, such as a large shed or factory,” he said. A spokeswoman for Apollo Motorhome Holidays said the compound had been fenced and locked. Insurance would only partially cover the loss. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www. crimestoppersvic.com.au. Lexi Cottee

Five brand new caravans fresh off the showroom floor have been stolen from a storage yard in Tullamarine. Detectives said the caravans were stolen from Apollo Motorhome Holidays overnight on February 20. Police spokeswoman Kelly Yates said the offenders broke into the storage yard by cutting a chain lock between 5pm on Friday, February 20 and 9am the following day. Detective Acting Sergeant Phil Crawford described the theft as “brazen.” Detectives hadn’t been able to obtain video footage and were seeking witnesses. “It’s not something that happens every day, thankfully. We don’t know if they were carted away in freight trucks or one by one.” Three of the caravans were Adria Adora or Adria Altea models, and two were Winnebago RV Minnie models. Their combined value is an estimated $280,000. The two Winnebagos were only shown for the

If you live near open grassland, parks, paddocks or reserves, you could be impacted by grassfire.
IT’S UP TO YOU TO KNOW WHAT TO DO IF A FIRE STARTS. DO YOU LIVE ONE OR TWO STREETS AWAY FROM GRASSLAND? Stay inside your home – grassfires are unlikely to spread past the first row of houses Keep the roads clear so emergency services can respond
DO YOU LIVE ON A FENCELINE NEXT TO GRASSLAND? If a fire starts, quickly move one or two streets away from the fenceline or park boundary Act early, even if you haven’t received a warning Keep the roads clear so emergency services can respond
Remember, it’s up to you to monitor weather conditions and warnings. Always keep an eye on the conditions outside - you may be aware of a fire before emergency services. If you see smoke or flames, call Triple Zero (000).

Ragtime at Rivergum
Cops seek Epping attacker
More than 55 young performers will take to the stage this month to tackle the big issues underpinning famed musical Ragtime. Director Amy Bryans says the production by youth theatre group Waterdale won’t shy away from exploring issues such as race and gender inequality. The musical is based on a novel by E. L. Doctorow and is set in the early 20th century. Scenes jump between three main groups – African Americans, white ‘moneyed’ Americans, and Eastern European immigrants. “It’s about how these three groups interact with each other,” Bryans said. “Despite being set in America, they’re universal themes that still resonate clearly in Australia today.” The Bundoora-based theatre group has created 150 costumes in four months and has been rehearsing tirelessly for the past two. There will be six performances, between March 6 and 14, at the Rivergum Theatre at Parade College in Bundoora. To book tickets, visit www.trybooking.com and search for Ragtime in Buy Tickets. Former cricketer Vakeesh Ganesharatnam didn’t want to see his local sporting field turn to straw the next time drought stuck. So the Mill Park resident signed up for Whittlesea council’s innovative water-saving program and installed a 4000-litre rainwater tank. A council agreement with Yarra Valley Water means that by connecting his water tank to the washing machine, toilet and garden hose, potable water from the utility’s underground pipes ordinarily used for these appliances will instead be reserved for watering Mill Park Reserve. Mr Ganesharatnam was the first Whittlesea resident to sign up for the council’s water offset program now being trialled. The program ensures that each time a household installs an approved water tank, it frees up potable water for irrigating local sports grounds. “I remember when we had serious drought conditions in 2006, we didn’t have any water to maintain the field,” Mr Ganesharatnam said. “When this opportunity came up I jumped at it. I didn’t want that to happen again.” Whittlesea council’s stormwater management co-ordinator Edmond Lascaris says the council is offering residents a $2000 rebate on their water tank, and they can also qualify for a further rebate of up to $1500 from Yarra Valley Water if they connect it to their toilet or laundry.
(Joe Mastroianni)
By Lexi Cottee
VAKEESH GANESHARATNAM
So far, 30 residents have expressed interest in the program and 10 home owners have signed the terms of agreement and are presently seeking quotes for a tank. “As soon as someone installs a 4000-litre tank they save about 40,000 litres of tap water in a typical year, and that stays in our reservoirs,” Mr Lascaris said. He said there were about 1400 sports groups in Melbourne with most relying on tap water to be irrigated. “Ideally, we need about 100 households to sign up to drought-proof one.”
A union at the centre of a fight against Sunbury’s planned secession is seeking legal advice after a bogus flyer was circulated in Hume. The flyer, based on a previous leaflet put out by the Australian Services Union (ASU), has been amended to include ‘‘there are no plans for new schools, hospitals or infrastructure” in Sunbury. The flyer also states: ‘‘The ASU agrees: [Sunbury MP] Josh Bull and Labor have no plans for Sunbury’’, and it claims to have been authorised by the union. Titled ‘Sunbury residents: Facts you need to know’, the flyer was inserted into many newspapers delivered in the town last week. ASU state secretary Richard Duffy said whoever created the ‘‘fraudulent’’ leaflet must believe people were stupid. ‘‘It’s a pretty dirty tactic by some pretty desperate people,’’ Mr Duffy said. ‘‘We’ve been consistent all along. ‘Sunbury out of Hume’ is bad for the community and it’s bad for our members.’’ Mr Duffy said a union petition calling for a new, compulsory vote had so far been signed by 5000 people. Sunbury Residents Association president Bernie O’Farrell said pro-split supporters met with Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins last week but received no confirmation that Sunbury City would come into existence on July 1, as planned. Ms Hutchins has previously said Labor’s review of the Sunbury project would not be rushed. Mr Bull could not be reached for comment.

SPORT Departing Lions determined to end 42-year drought Turf Cricket club Jacana is rapidly approaching a fork in the road with a raft of imminent retirements and would love nothing more than to send off their loyal servants with a drought-breaking north B1 flag. “About six of us will finish up this year, so it’s a now-or-never situation for us,” Lions vice-captain Casey Whelan told Star Weekly. “We really have to make it count.” It has been a painstaking 42 years since Jacana’s last first XI premiership. The Lions are glad to be back in the finals after last summer’s heartbreak, when they missed out on the top four by 0.02 per cent. They have secured a home final with a top-two finish, giving them a great chance to advance to their first grand final since 2009-10. “It was a bit of a stinger that one,” Whelan said of missing the finals last season.
“There were two or three runs across the whole season that cost us a finals spot. “It’s been 42 years . . . so we’re definitely overdue down at Jacana. “We’ve always been competitive and we’ve had some wins in other grades. “For the most part it’s been quite strong, but we’ve never quite been able to get over the line when it counts.” Standing in the way of Jacana and ultimate glory is minor premier East Coburg. Easts are deserved favourites after spending the summer on top of the ladder but Whelan will back his side to bring them down should the teams advance beyond the semi-finals. “We really think that on our day, we can beat anyone in our comp, definitely,” he said. Jacana has a priceless commodity in the finals: match-winners.
The Lions have arguably the best player involved in the March action in all-rounder Praneeth Jayasundera. Opposition clubs would feel sick digesting Jayasundera’s numbers, including 515 runs at 42.9 batting at number four, 37 wickets at 12.2 with his leg spin and seven catches in the field for a bit of icing on the cake. The 34-year-old was once a Sri Lanka A player, scoring just under 2500 runs and taking 131 first-class wickets in his native land. “We can’t do without him really, he’s that good,” Whelan said. “He’s a superstar and a ripper bloke, too. “You won’t find a better player in the comp.” With 494 runs at 38, Telge Peiris is another batsman who could tear a game to shreds for Jacana in the finals. But the lack of consistent form in the rest of
the batting department is a slight concern to Whelan. “There’s a lot of talent there that’s unfulfilled for the most part,” he said. “We have a lot of players that look good for a while and seem to find a way to get out. “One day it will all come together.” But Jacana has a well-stocked cupboard in the bowling department with six genuine threats. The Lions have the first and third leading wicket-takers in the division in Jayasundera and Jack Ottaway, who has 29 at 14.55. Wayne Cooper (18 at 21.44), Glenn Groves (15 at 19.47), Shannon Bennett (13 at 12.23) and Peiris (11 at 16.18) all have more than 10 wickets. The VTCA finals begin on Saturday with Jacana to host Flemington in the semi-final. Lance Jenkinson
Ranges happy to get the point By Lance Jenkinson Whittlesea Ranges had to wait a week longer than most other clubs to open its account in the Football Federation Victoria NPL1 West competition because its opening-round clash with newcomers Melbourne City was postponed. The Ranges will have to play the waiting game again – this time for a goal – after a 0-0 draw with the Ballarat Red Devils in the clash at Epping Stadium on Saturday. Although the result gave Ranges their first point, club secretary Sergio Costanzo told Star Weekly his side yearned for more but thought a draw was a fair outcome. “It was a fairly even contest,” he said. “Both teams can walk away reasonably content with the overall performance. “It was a quality hit-out with a lot of talent on both sides and both teams did themselves credit by the way they tapped the ball around and the way they defended. “It was basically just in the finishing that let them down. You could tell both teams were a little bit on the rusty side.” The Ranges attacking trio of Daniel Peluso, Matthew Iuliano and import Giosue Tolomeo made their way into dangerous positions and received first-class delivery but could not find the back of the net. Iuliano had the best of the opportunities, failing to convert a one-on-one with Red Devils goalkeeper Aaron Romein early in the match. “The chances were there; we created quite a few,” Costanzo said. “Sooner or later those boys will put them away.” The stand-out for the Ranges was 19-year-old former Melbourne Victory youth goalkeeper Gian Tapia, who was called on to make numerous saves in the second half. “He’s a talented goalie, tall and athletic,” Costanzo said. “We have quite a few boys in the squad who can go to a higher level at some stage and he’s not far off that. “He’s one with heaps of potential. “Our average age on the park was 20 and the squad we’ve put together this year is the nucleus of the side that will push us towards promotion in the near future. “We’re fairly young but we have a lot more talent and potential than last year.” The Ranges will make the short trip to face arch-rivals Moreland Zebras at CB Smith Reserve on Saturday. The two sides were once merged under the name Whittlesea Zebras and a rivalry was reborn after they split again. “It’ll be on,” Costanzo said. “Both clubs have gone at each other over the years and it will be no different this week. “It’ll be a good game.” 14 NORTHERN STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 3, 2015

RSL needs a second bite By Lance Jenkinson Bundoora RSL will need to cash in its Bowls Victoria premier division finals double chance after losing to minor premier Altona on Saturday. The RSL boys gave a good account of themselves in the major semi-final but went down 82-71 at Buckley Park Bowls Club. RSL had late opportunities to win, but Altona made the bigger plays down the stretch to be the first side through to the grand final. Damon Di Florio was Bundoora RSL’s biggest rink win for the day, beating Altona player-coach Brett Foley 21-13. Brett Spurr, one of RSL’s most consistent performing rinks since Christmas, enjoyed a narrow 17-16 win over Shane Fordham. But Adam Galloway had a day to forget for RSL, hammered 31-15 by Brad Peck, while Nick McIntyre was beaten 22-18 by Mathew Rennex. “We were four [shots] down with three [ends] to play and things just didn’t go our way in the last couple of ends,” Bundoora coach Ian Ewing told Star Weekly. “At the end it was a conversion one way and a missed conversion the other way. The result might have changed on the back of two bowls.” While Bundoora RSL was deflated by the loss, the premiership equation remains unchanged. RSL went into the finals needing two wins for a flag and that’s still the case ahead of a preliminary final date with Essendon on Saturday. “We get the opportunity next week to start the process of winning two games,” Ewing said. The winner of the RSL-Essendon clash meets Altona in the grand final in a fortnight. The sides met twice in the regular season with each standing their ground on their home green.

In-form Falcons fly to the top RoxburghPark-Broadmeadows provided more evidence it’s a sub-district cricket premiership contender at the weekend. The Falcons flashed their impressive credentials in a 39-run win away over north-west group powerhouse Werribee. The red-hot Falcons moved to the top of the ladder and head into Saturday’s final round one-dayer against Sunshine odds-on to stay there ahead of the finals. Mitchell Streiff starred for the Falcons with a maiden first XI century as Roxburgh Park-Broadmeadows posted 8-259 off 80 overs on day one. It was more than enough for the Falcons to defend as they rolled Werribee for 220. The one-two punch of Patrick Matautaava (4-56) and Mitchell Johnstone (4-76) was too much for the home side to handle. Johnstone is the competition’s second-ranked bowler with 37 wickets at 13.03, while Matautaava is fourth with 32 at 12.59. Having two of the top four bowlers has gone a long way to helping the Falcons close in on the minor premiership. Meanwhile, Plenty Valley surrendered top billing with an ugly loss to Melton. The Bats were bowled out for 61 in their first dig, and although Melton fared only slightly better with 9-78 declared, it was enough to shake up the order at the top. The Bats batted a second time, finishing on 6-157. Lance Jenkinson
