Poppies for friend and former foe Handmade poppies will adorn a wall inside Thomastown library for the next two weeks. The sequinned, satin, velvet, wool and beaded flowers are the handiwork of about 30 Turkish women, members of a recreation group, who have spent recent weeks with needles and thread, glue and scissors, to produce a three-dimensional mural. Group president Nurcihan Ozturk (pictured 4th from right with other group members) says the mural pays tribute to lives lost on both sides during World War 1. “This has been an emotional project,” she said. “We wanted to show the community that there are Turkish people who are living and contributing here. Anzac Day carries a lot of significance for Turkish people and we wanted to demonstrate this in an artistic way.” Mrs Ozturk and two other group members had great uncles and grandfathers who fought for Turkey during the Great War. Reprieve for bus services By Lexi Cottee The state government has pulled the pin on a proposed shake-up of bus services in the northern suburbs. Premier Daniel Andrews said last Tuesday the proposed network changes drawn up by operator Transdev last year, and due to come into effect this month, would not be implemented. The network shake-up was designed to improve punctuality and connectivity. Under the plan, bus routes in the northern and

western suburbs would have been sacrificed for more frequent buses in the eastern suburbs. The plans included splitting into two trips the popular 901 Frankston-Melbourne Airport service, the 902 Chelsea-Airport West service and the 903 Altona-Mordialloc service. These services currently run every 15 minutes between 6.30am and 9pm on weekdays and every 30 minutes at weekends. According to the Transdev website, because of the length of the routes, these orbital services are often affected by unavoidable traffic delays which damage punctuality

and reliability along entire routes. If the changes had gone ahead, the services operating in the northern suburbs would be the 911 Box Hill-Airport West, the 912 from Doncaster Shoppingtown to Melbourne Airport, and the 913 from Northland Shopping Centre to Essendon Station. The frequency of the 911 and 912 services in peak times would blow out by five to 10 minutes. Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan said the changes were inconsistent with the Andrews government’s focus on better bus

services, which are based on community consultation. The state government has told Public Transport Victoria (PTV) and Transdev to go back to the drawing board and consult more widely with communities. “Rather than cutting buses in one area to increase buses in another, the government will develop a more balanced bus network plan in consultation with the community,” Ms Allan said in a statement. PTV spokeswoman Kerilyn Wyatt said the joint PTV and Transdev proposal would now be refined and taken back to the community

Hoons turn street into speedway By Lexi Cottee A spate of accidents on a Bundoora thoroughfare has prompted Whittlesea council to conduct a road safety audit. Botanica Boulevard resident Nicole Mackowiak took to Facebook to air her concerns about the busy residential street after coming home earlier this month to find her retaining wall had been crashed into. Just two weeks earlier, a pedestrian sign nearby had been knocked over “by a hoon”. She said that despite adjoining a park and

being the site of a Route 564 bus stop for passengers heading to South Morang train station, the street was used as a speedway. On the day her front retaining wall was hit by a car, another car was struck by a van speeding around the corner. Just five minutes later, she said, “two more cars spun out” and one of them hit the bus stop sign. “It’s such a dangerous corner that drivers don’t even have to be going at crazy speeds to lose control. Especially on wet days,” she posted online. Ms Mackowiak said there hade been at least

half a dozen car accidents in the ast few years in the street. Whittlesea council’s director of infrastructure and technology, Nick Mann, said the council has been made aware of an increasing number of road safety incidents along Botanica Boulevard. “As a result, council will undertake an investigation and carry out a road safety audit along Botanica Boulevard to determine appropriate measures that can be made to improve pedestrian and road users safety,” he said.

Police sergeant John Liddell, based at Mill Park station, said he wasn’t aware of Botanica Boulevard as a “hoon” hotspot, but hooning was prevalent across the north. He said Brand Drive, Thomastown, was the most popular drag racing strip known to police. “Unfortunately, they congregate there because it’s an industrial area with many exits,” Sergeant Liddell said. “When police arrive, 300 cars can disappear within two minutes.” Bundoora highway patrol was unavailable for comment.

Wake up call delivered a hole develops between the bladder and vagina after prolonged obstructed childbirth. “Beth was 14 when she heard about this need,” Mrs Wake said. “Women having babies at a young age, who become the untouchables … They’re often isolated, about 80 per cent are abandoned by their husbands and families.” Last month Beth’s family visited the maternal and newborn health department of a Tanzanian hospital, taking a film crew to produce a documentary about the women there and the condition they face. They also plan to write a book about the work at the hospital. “Our two girls came with us. It was very eye-opening for them,” Mrs Wake said. “These women are living in such harsh conditions.” To donate to the Bethany Wake Stop Fistula Appeal visit www.cbm.org.au/bethany. Lexi Cottee

When Lyn Wake and her daughters, Rachael and Nicole, entered a rehabilitation hospital in Tanzania recently, they were welcomed in song. The Doreen family was in Dar es Salaam, the largest city in eastern Africa, on a mission particularly close to their hearts. Four years ago, Lyn and David Wake’s then 15-year-old daughter, Bethany, died of an aggressive form of brain cancer. Before her death, Beth had spoken of her desire to become a midwife and work in Ethiopia at Addis Ababa Fistular Hospital after learning about the hospital’s co-founders, Catherine and Reg Hamlin, at school. For four years, the Wake family has been raising funds to support Beth’s dream, so far collecting about $100,000, administered through CBM Australia, a Christian development organisation. Beth’s particular concern was to help women suffering obstetric fistula, a condition in which

Police raids net giant haul

Heritage Victoria archaeologist Jeremy Smith with an old bottle found at the mill site.

(Shawn Smits)

Old mill tells its tale By Lexi Cottee Archaeologists have been busy at work on the banks of the Plenty River at Mernda. To coincide with last week’s National Heritage Week, scientists armed with hand picks got down on hands and knees to unearth hidden artefacts at the site of the old Moses Thomas Mill. Principal archaeologist Jeremy Smith said all sorts of interesting relics had been excavated, from glass bottles dating from the 1850s to ancient Aboriginal artefacts.

His team from Heritage Victoria will keep digging away until the end of the week in an effort to expose the remains of what they believe could be a house or ancillary structure at the rear of the old flour mill site. The site was established as a mill in 1854 when Moses Thomas, a qualified engineer, returned from the goldfields with a vision for a mill one mile upstream from the Carome Mill. Powered by steam, his mill was operating a year later. Mr Thomas eventually abandoned steam in favour of water power, which was cheaper. He dammed the river to ensure a

steady flow and the mill continued to operate until 1863 when a violent storm washed away the dam he had built. Mr Smith said the aim of the dig was to teach students and Whittlesea residents about the historical significance of the site. “The whole Plenty Gorge region is significant to the development of Melbourne. In the 1850s, grain and wheat came from this part of Victoria and the archaeological remains are some of the oldest in the state. “We’re really keen to teach people about their significant local history,” Mr Smith added.

Police were kept busy in Melbourne’s north last week after a series of raids netted weapons, drugs and stolen goods. Four northern suburbs men were charged with theft after police seized luxury cars and property valued at more than $460,000 on Wednesday. Sam Bokhaazi, 45, of Mill Park, Abraham Naddaf, 42, of Yarrambat, Christopher Sykos, 51, of Reservoir, and Mohomoud Naddaf, 35, of Doreen, fronted Melbourne Magistrates Court last Thursday. They faced charges of aggravated burglary and theft. Their appearance followed the execution of warrants by Whittlesea crime investigation unit detectives and the Special Operations Group on seven properties at Doreen, Mill Park, Venus Bay, Yarrambat and Reservoir about 5am last Wednesday. Luxury cars and property were later seized, as were allegedly stolen goods, a gun and drugs. The men were remanded in custody until April 22. Another seven men and three women were arrested following unrelated drug raids in Sunbury on Thursday morning, when police seized drugs, weapons and chemicals used in the production of methamphetamine. Anyone with information about suspicious activities is urged to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au. Lexi Cottee

Messy gum trees trigger petition By Lexi Cottee Residents of Incana Drive, Mill Park, are fed up with the 10-metre gum trees on their nature strip and want them removed. Fifty-seven residents have lodged a petition with Whittlesea council that calls for officers to assess the environmental, safety and structural issues with the gum trees planted in their street about 10 years ago. One of the petitioners, Elaine Costanzo, said the trees drop “copious” amounts of leaves, bark and branches, creating a mess for

residents to clean up. She said the tree outside her house was planted too close to her sewage outlet, contravening council guidelines. “They create so many problems, with leaves in my gutters,” she said. “I’m so tired of them.” Ms Costanzo moved into the street 17 years ago, before the gum trees were planted in place of smaller ornamental trees. In 2000, Whittlesea council produced a street tree masterplan after conducting a street-by-street assessment of existing trees and after extensive community consultation. Feedback from residents showed that the

community wanted more street trees, with a particular interest in indigenous varieties. Ms Costanzo said the gum trees the council planted had caused cracks in a neighbour’s garage and bedroom wall. She wants the council to replace them with smaller, ornamental trees. But Whittlesea council’s parks and open space manager, Kristen Jackson, said most people embraced the value of having tree-lined streets. “The council places great importance on our city’s trees and keeping them healthy,”

Ms Jackson said. “They play a vital role in the liveability and character of our suburbs.” She said the council managed its street trees through a proactive maintenance program. Every street is inspected and trees pruned on average every two years, if required. “Trees also have many substantial benefits; they have been shown to cool the air, soak up climate change-inducing gases, protect us against flooding, reduce stress levels, and raise property values,” Ms Jackson said. Residents concerned about street or park trees can contact the council on 9679 9880.

Whittlesea remembers Friends and colleagues of former Whittlesea councillor Nicola Davis donned lycra and pedalled their way to Mernda in memory of the 35-year-old mother and cycling enthusiast, who passed away almost a year ago. The commemorative bike ride set off from Plenty Ranges Arts and Convention Centre. Ms Davis died on April 15 last year after a short battle with cancer. She was born in the United Kingdom and grew up in South Africa before moving to Australia with her husband, Paul, in 2005. She left behind two daughters, Sienna and Tabatha. Whittlesea councillor Rex Griffin said Ms Davis had been sorely missed. “She did so much for the community in such a short time,” he said. Lexi Cottee

Anzac link nurtured

KAREN FLYNN

Aitken College students Declan Harvey and Madeleine Lively chose to remember Herbert Thomas Watson during a special Anzac Day service held at the Greenvale school last Friday. Mr Watson was a member of the 22nd Australian Infantry Battalion, who died in Belgium while fighting the Battle of Ypres on October 3, 1917. He was 27. The year 7 students reflected on his service and sacrifice and placed a cross on the school oval in his memory. All of the school’s students, from prep to year 12, took part in the commemorative service, which was made all the more

emotive by the presence of a bugler playing The Last Post. Deputy principal Kim Forward said the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing inspired the school to do something different, “to encourage each class and student to remember individual men and women who served”. The students planted a Gallipoli oak, an evergreen shrub, to create a symbolic link between the centenary of Anzac, the people of Turkey and Australian school students. Lexi Cottee

Snapshot of trench life The notoriously dangerous trench warfare of the Western Front took a huge toll on Australian troops during the First World War. Karen Flynn rattles off the medical afflictions the soldiers endured while serving in France and Belgium as though she, too, was among those young men and women who fought, cooked, nursed, dug trenches and drove ambulances between 1914 and 1918. “Thirty per cent had trench foot, 20 per cent had lice,” Ms Flynn said. Four of Ms Flynn’s forebears served on the firing line of the Western Front, and one in the Middle East during the “Great War”. Over the years, the Westmeadows’ resident has felt an increasing desire to preserve their memories, some of which are immortalised in diaries, and commemorate their sacrifices.

About 12 months ago, Ms Flynn formed The Flynn Group, a working party dedicated to hosting a commemorative event on Anzac Day to remember the Diggers. The group’s first event, Snapshot from a war war, will take place at Broadmeadows Town Park on Saturday, 1-5pm, to give visitors some idea of what daily life was like for the 300,000 or so Australians who served on the Western Front. An original 1916 field ambulance will be on display (the same one featured in the Gallipoli movie) as well as old army uniforms, gas masks and letters. Choirs will sing the same songs sung by the soldiers in the trenches, including It’s a long way to Tipperary and Rose of Piccardy. Lexi Cottee

13 NORTHERN STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 21, 2015

SPORT Whittlesea sets cracking pace in early rounds It would be difficult to find anyone who would disagree that the Whittlesea Pacers are the early premiership favourites in women’s Big V division 1 basketball. The Pacers played four games in the opening five rounds and had an average winning margin of 34 points, before having two weeks off. The lowest winning margin in those matches was 26 points. On Sunday, they continued their winning streak with a 76-63 victory against Latrobe City. Before the weekend’s game, Pacers coach Shannon Bodley said the side had set a

pre-season goal of being 4-0 at the Easter break. “We split the season into mini-seasons and the girls and myself pencilled in to be 4-0 in the first four rounds,” Bodley said. “We had a hard pre-season. The girls worked on getting fit and have been able to push it to another level this year and are running out matches much better.” Bodley said the focus on getting fit was partly in response to his side’s performances last year, in which it finished sixth. “It was something we did lack last season,” he said. “We are now able to keep running and hurt teams on fast breaks.”

One player who has had a massive impact this season is import Kimetria Hayden. She has averaged 25 points and 10 rebounds in her first four games, and has other coaches standing up and taking notice. “It’s amazing how quickly Kimetria has settled in,” Bodley said. “We got her out early and she has been here all pre-season. “The Werribee coach said that Mildura had a one in 10 year import last season and that we have got one of those players, too.” Hayden isn’t the only inclusion to the Pacers line-up this season. “Hannah Rifat has come down from

Eagles winning the fight By Tara Murray They may not have done it in the most emphatic fashion, but the Craigieburn Eagles have notched up two wins to open the Essendon District Football League divisions 1 season. After winning just five games in the past three years, that’s a good look. In round one, they snuck home by one point against Glenroy, and on Saturday they were made to fight for victory against Tullamarine. Coach Peter Bugden said the way his side was nailing wins was one of the most impressive things early in the season. “We are fighting hard and it’s showing character,” he said. On Saturday, the Eagles faced a fired-up Tullamarine side that had done its homework. The Eagles defeated the Demons 16.14 (110)-12.4 (76). “They were pumped for their first match of the season and playing at home,” Bugden said. “They came out strong. “They played off in a grand final last season, and while they lost a lot of players, they’ve also picked up a lot of players. “We picked up the work rate in the second half. We were positive going into the main break about our ability to lift and we did that.” Bugden said the Demons matched up well on the Eagles’ Cloke brothers but they were still able to have an impact. “Jason kicked three goals and spent the day up forward and pushed up into the middle at times,” he said. “Cameron got hurt early and had a bit of concussion and went off … but came back in the second half and had an impact.” Garrett Heenan and Jeremy Page were best on ground for the Eagles, while William Becker and Steven Howard were the best for the Demons. For the Eagles, the challenge in the next few weeks will be finding the club’s best line-up. “We’ve had to make some hard decisions at the selection table,” Bugden said. “The players know what is acceptable and what is not. We had players come out of the side this week and played at lower levels … they will continue to push for seniors spots. “We still have a long way to go but it’s been good to grind out those wins.” In other matches, Oak Park remains undefeated after coming from behind against Westmeadows to win 14.12 (96) - 12.8 (80). Greenvale got its first win of the year, against Avondale Heights in premier division, while Roxburgh Park and Jacana were among the winners in division 2. Bendigo,” Bodley said. “Her defensive intensity is amazing and she provides an X-factor. Haylee Cooper-MacLean has returned to the club after a year away. She and Kellie Down have played together before and they play off each other.” Bodley said the Easter break and bye came at a good time, allowing his players to freshen up and rest niggling injuries. “The next three weeks we face the other teams in the top five and it will show us where we are at,” Bodley said. “It will be really tough but hopefully we’ll get a few wins.” Tara Murray

Captain pushes for TAC selection Northern Knights captain Jade Gresham knew he had to start his TAC Cup season with a bang. Wanting to make the Vic Metro squad and eventually the playing side, he needed his footy to do the talking. He breezed into the squad after being named in the Knights’ best in the opening three rounds of the season, including a best-on-ground performance. Gresham survived the squad’s first cut and will continue his push to play in the Vic Metro side. The Parade College year 12 student said he preferred to play midfield but that he had played half back in his junior career. “My start to the season has been all right,” he said. Gresham said he had been working hard to ensure he did all the little things right to make sure he plays his best. “I do gym sessions, pool sessions and boxing on top of training with the Knights,” he said. “They expect us to do a lot of it – we all should be doing it. “After the first few games you get pretty sore so I’ve been getting to the pool to make sure my body is right.” The 17-year-old said he put his hand up for the Knights’ captaincy, having previously led school and local club South Morang teams. “It was a pretty tough pre-season,” he said. “Being the older one you have to lead a bit more and set a good example. “Last year I was in the leadership group and wanted to be captain so I put my hand up. “I probably am a lead by example-type of person on and off the field and I’m still working on getting better at that.” The Knights have started the season with one win from the first three rounds. “I think we are improving every week and hopefully we can play finals,” Gresham said. “I think we can.” After being named in the Knights’ best in 11 of the 17 games he played last season, Gresham said the aim this season was to keep his performance at a high level. “I just want to be consistent, hopefully like last year,” he said. “I want to go forward and kick a few more goals and work on spreading after the clearance. “I will also work on endurance – you can always work on that.” Tara Murray

Short Bulls rely on pace By Tara Murray Bundoora’s dwindling ruck continues to take a hit as the club’s injury list grows. The Bulls entered their round two Northern Football League division 1 match against Montmorency with no one on the field taller than 186 centimetres, and their cause was not helped when they lost stand-in ruckman Luke Simpson to a knee injury. Bulls’ football manager, Darryl Richards, said the club was struggling in the ruck and looking for someone to help fill the spot. Richards said star ruckman Matthew Dennis, who was named in the Vic Metro squad during the week, would miss three to six weeks from a round one injury “Matthew has a bruised kidney, which bled, so he’ll need at least three to six weeks out to recover. Our back-up ruckman needs a

shoulder reconstruction and Luke Simpson, who pinch-hit at the weekend, hurt his knee and could be out for the rest of the year.” Richards said the lack of tall players contributed to his side’s slow start to its match with the Magpies on Saturday. Six goals down at half-time, the Bulls hit the front in the final minutes only to succumb, 16.20 (116) to 17.12 (114). “The pressure of Montmorency early made us make silly errors. Their big men were dominant early. Our tallest player was six-foot-one, while they had four to five players six-foot and over.” At half-time, coach Phil Plunkett emphasised to players to get back to what they do best. “Being a small side we have to beat them with speed,” Richards said. “We played better and Montmorency started to slow. We nearly pinched it. Once we had the lead, we had two

shots to ice the cake, but we missed them and couldn’t hold on.” Richards said Ned McKeown was best for the Bulls after he went into the ruck in the second half; he also kicked five goals. He said McKeown would pinch-hit in the ruck over the next few weeks if he wasn’t selected in Collingwood’s VFL side. Jordan Galea, out of the under-19s, would also get some time in the seniors in the ruck. Youngsters Beau Moorcroft, 16, and Brent Marshall, 17, were singled out by Richards as his best players. “They showed the senior guys the way.” In division 2, Lalor and Thomastown both secured their second victories of the season, against Fitzroy Stars and Diamond Creek respectively. Mernda went down to Hurstbridge, while Whittlesea lost in a thriller to Panton Hill.

Greensborough pins top four hope on youth Greensborough Hockey Club is determined to reduce the gap between its top two teams as it looks to the future. The Plenty-based club finished fifth last season in Hockey Victoria’s women’s premier league competition – one point outside the top four. Coach Greg Pickford said the club wanted to build on that and look at injecting more youth into the senior side. “We were a bit disappointed with finishing fifth and that has set a fire in the belly to get back into the top four this season,” Pickford said. “We have four to five girls that are under 20 – they will get a chance with our senior side. Hopefully, they get a fair bit of time and will go to the next level.” Pickford said the club’s reserves side needed to be stronger to ensure that those being promoted could handle the step up. “As a whole group they have really bonded and are really focused on closing the gap between the senior and reserves sides,” he said. “There has been a gap between the two sides … the main focus is for the younger girls to feel confident at a higher level when they have the opportunities.” He said the club had a couple of players retire in the off-season but would be boosted by some incoming experience. Lauren Chatelier returns after a break, while former Belgium international Celine Donnet joins the club. “Celine has been in Australia for a few years,” Pickford said. “She has moved to Greensborough so she has come down to the club.” The club kicked off its season on Saturday with a 2-1 loss to Essendon. “It has been a really good off-season,” Pickford said before the game. “It’s been a real good turnout and everyone is fighting fit. We’ve had a few scratch matches and had a good look at the up-and-coming girls.” The men’s side also started its season on Saturday against Essendon, the Burras winning 3-1. Both sides will play Hawthorn on Saturday afternoon at home. Tara Murray

Draw kickstarts United’s season Hume United, including Ismet Balta (pictured), got its first points of the season with a 2-2 draw against Melbourne University on Saturday. The draw lifts United off the bottom of the FFV state league 2 north-west ladder ahead of its clash against Essendon United this week. Sporting Whittlesea suffered its first loss of the season against Essendon Royals, going down 3-1. In state league 3 north west, Lalor United drew 1-1 with Hoppers Crossing while Whittlesea United lost to the Western Eagles. In state league 4 north, Plenty Valley Lions continued their good start with a 4-0 win against Greenvale. Visit www.northern.starweekly.com.au for more photos.

Hume City’s loss of form in the National Premier League is more a mental than a physical issue, according to coach Louie Acevski. After winning five matches in a row, City has collected only one point out of its past three games, losing to South Melbourne 1-0 in wet conditions at ABD Stadium on Saturday. Acevski said a loss of confidence seems to have hit the side. “We’ve gone from one extreme to the other, scoring lots of goals to not scoring at all,” he said. Acevski said the team would look at addressing the issues at training ahead of the side’s game against Green Gully. “If we get back to basics, hopefully they will score goals at training and it will flow on to the game.” In NPL 1, Whittlesea Ranges beat Box Hill United 3-0.
