Retail mecca for north Craigieburn is set to become a ‘one-stop shop’ for all things retail, with plans under way for a large lifestyle centre opposite Craigieburn Central. A 23,000 square-metre centre – Craigieburn Junction – will feature about 15 large format retailers, as well as medical and entertainment businesses, at 420 Craigieburn Road. Plans also show two freestanding sites suitable for a service station or fast food outlet, as well as more than 600 parking spaces. Developer Oreana Group is behind the project, which is expected to be completed in late 2017. Plans have already been approved by Hume council. Burgess Rawson leasing director David Mark, who is acting on behalf of the developer, said the centre would feature furniture, electrical, bedding and auto stores typically found in homemaker centres. He said a number of national retailers had already signed up. Mr Mark said Craigieburn Junction would be the “largest and most prominent” retail and lifestyle centre in Melbourne’s north, predicting it would become a “destination” that would create a large regional town centre at Craigieburn. “Situated side-by-side with Craigieburn Central, it becomes a one-stop-shop for all things retail,” he said. “It will cement the area as a retail precinct.” Mr Mark said while the development was only presented to the market earlier this month, the responses from retailers had been exceptional. He said feedback from the community suggested that residents were also excited by the plans. Many residents have already taken to social media to express their support for the project and to call for auto and electrical stores to be included, as well as office space. Mr Mark said that Craigieburn was the ideal area for such a development, given that it was one of the fastest growing suburbs in the country. He said Craigieburn Junction would be in a centralised area that could be accessed by Craigieburn Road and Aitken Boulevard and was close to the Hume Highway and Hume Freeway. “This is a growing area that can support this level of development. “Hume is putting a lot of focus on this area,” Mr Mark said. “It is an exciting proposal.”

Mernda rails against sky bridges By Laura Michell Mernda residents remain hopeful the companies vying to build the town’s new rail extension will consider laying the tracks at or below ground level. This is despite the state government’s final designs, released on May 19, featuring elevated rail bridges at Bridge Inn Road, Hawkstowe Parade and The Parkway. The rest of the track will be built at ground level. The decision to use elevated rail for part of the eight-kilometre extension goes against
concerns raised by the council and the community about the visual impact of ‘sky rail’. In March, the council wrote to Premier Daniel Andrews and Opposition Leader Matthew Guy, saying it feared elevated rail would undermine the “strong sense of place” that exists in the rail corridor, and would dominate the future Mernda town centre. South Morang and Mernda Rail Alliance spokesman Darren Peters said the community hoped companies vying for the tender would consider all options. He said there were concerns that the use of elevated rail bridges
would detract from the ambience of the area, and fears train passengers would be able to see into back gardens. Level Crossing Removal Authority project director Graeme Chambers said bridges were needed along the line to ensure no new level crossings were created. He said that the presence of hard basalt rock and shallow ground water along sections of the extension – as well as the community’s desire to protect native wildlife and waterways – meant rail bridges were “the best option”. The extension is due to open in 2019 and will
include a premium station at Mernda. A second station will be built near South Morang’s Marymede Catholic College. Bidders for the rail extension contract have been asked to price a third station near Hawkstowe Parade. John Holland and a McConnell Dowell Constructors/UGL Engineering joint venture have been shortlisted to submit tenders for the extension. A contract for the project is expected to be awarded in early 2017. Construction on the track extension is due to start soon afterwards.
Series filming bid struggles A bid to film the second season of controversial reality television program Struggle Street in Broadmeadows has been rejected by Hume council, with mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou saying the suburb should not be “made fun of”. SBS has commissioned a second season of the show, which looks at the social and economic hardships facing people across the country. The new series will be filmed in Queensland and Victoria. Brimbank council has already rejected an application from production company Keo Films for the program to be filmed in Sunshine. Cr Patsikatheodorou said Hume council did not support the application to film Struggle Street in Broadmeadows because it did not want to see residents’ disadvantages turned into a television show’s advantage. “We’re a proud people, with a great future and we won’t be made fun of,” she said. An SBS spokeswoman said Struggle Street was not about specific areas of the country but rather about the issues of hardship that affect people and communities. “The areas that we will film in are areas where challenges reflect universal socio-economic issues and where we can get first-hand stories that help audiences to engage with the broader issue,” she said. She did not answer questions about whether SBS would pursue Broadmeadows as a filming location for season two despite the council’s stance. The series is scheduled to air in late 2017.
History revered CFA volunteers from across the northern suburbs gathered at Kalkallo last weekend to celebrate the local fire brigade’s 50th anniversary. Land owners keen to protect their properties from grass fires formed the brigade in 1965, but it wasn’t operational until 1966. Over the past half a century, the brigade’s membership has grown, with volunteers from Craigieburn, Beveridge, Kalkallo and Whittlesea signing up to lend a hand. Secretary Gary Cockerell said the brigade now has 109 members, including about 20 juniors. He said residents of new estates in the area, including Mandalay at Beveridge, were helping to boost member numbers. “People from Mandalay realise they are in a fire-prone area and they want to help out,” he said. “When people hear it’s going to be a bad fire season, it tends to drive memberships.” CFA chief officer Joe Buffone and Emergency Management Victoria commissioner Craig Lapsley took part in the brigade’s celebrations on May 28, inspecting the brigade, while former captain and long-serving member Ned Pannuzzo gave a speech outlining the brigade’s history. Students at Epping’s St Monica’s College are taking a closer look at nature as they begin creating a unique artwork to be displayed at the school. Japanese print-maker Kyoko Imazu has been appointed the school’s artist-in-residence for this year to guide students. Ms Imazu is also a book-binder and maker of artists’ books. She recently launched her own illustrated book, Following Following, at the National Gallery of Victoria. Ms Imazu will work with year eight students to design and paint a large-scale print to be installed in the school’s E-Learning centre. Students have been asked to create a print that explores the beauty of the natural world.
Ms Imazu said she was keen for the school community to also contribute to the artwork. This is the fourth year the school has run its artist-in-residence program. Principal Brian Hanley said the school is dedicated to giving students different experiences. “We are very pleased to welcome such an eminent artist as Kyoko to our college,” he said. “Kyoko has had significant international experience. I am sure the students …will benefit from this rich experience.” Ms Imazu will be at the school until the end of term two. Laura Michell

Funding call for preschool years By Laura Michell Families in Hume could be asked to pay an extra $1000 each year for their child to attend kindergarten if federal funding for kindergartens is not extended beyond December 2017. Hume council is calling on the Liberal and Labor parties to commit to continue funding for four-year-olds to attend kindergarten for 15 hours a week as part of the federal election. The federal government currently pays for five out of the 15 hours of preschool which children receive in the year before they start
school. The other 10 hours are funded by the Victorian government. Mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou said the council would face a funding shortfall of at least $1.7 million a year if the funding was not continued. She warned that without federal funding, the council could be forced to increase kindergarten fees. “Many families in Hume would simply not be able to afford this extra amount and we don’t want any child to miss out on their crucial year at preschool,” she said. “There is strong evidence that 15 hours of preschool

helps children to later succeed throughout their social life. Preschool is particularly important in Hume where many families come from disadvantaged backgrounds, and some children speak a language other than English at home.
“The Australian government has backed universal access to preschool since 2013 and we’d love the major parties to pledge their ongoing support to this vital year of childhood eduction.” The council has created postcards calling for federal funding for kindergartens which will be handed out to parents at preschools across the municipality. Cr Patsikatheodorou said it was essential that families backed the campaign to avoid a fee hike. Off to a flying start Mill Park’s Alison Herbert is a step closer to realising her dream of joining the Royal Australian Air Force after spending a week at a technical camp in Wagga Wagga. Ms Herbert recently lived on the RAAF’s base at Wagga for a week, experiencing what it was like to be a member of the air force. The Girls Residential Technical Camp allowed participants to work on air force equipment and take part in training exercises. Ms Herbert said she signed up for the camp to get a feel for the air force lifestyle and make sure it was for her. “Ultimately, I want to become an officer within the air force and a good leader,” she said. “I want to be an engineer to put what I learnt at uni into practice on real aircraft that are being used everyday.”
Ms Herbert said her favourite part of the camp was the confidence course and physical training. “It’s great to see young women working together and being mentored by strong female role models,” she said. The camp was open to young women aged between 16 and 24 from around the country as part of the air force work experience program. Laura Michell

Legal aid cuts hit at core Whittlesea Community Legal Service (WCLS) may have to turn people away after the federal budget failed to reverse a 2014 decision to cut funding to the sector. From July 1 next year, funding for Victorian community legal centres will be cut by 10 per cent, with further cuts expected until 2020. Whittlesea Community Connections (WCC), which runs the WCLS, said the loss of 10 per cent in funding could mean cuts to its services.
Acting chief executive Peta Fualau said the centre could be forced to cut the number of lawyers it employs, which would in turn reduce the number of people the centre would be able to help. She said WCLS has a large catchment, with the closest community legal centre to the north of Whittlesea being at Shepparton. “Our capacity not to be able to reach out to the community is real,” she said. Ms Fualau said demands for help were increasing in growth areas such as Whittlesea, as families struggle with rising costs, increasing
debts and family violence-related problems. Last year, WCLS helped 1961 clients, many of whom sought help for family violence. Police statistics reveal Whittlesea has one of the highest rates of family violence in the northern metropolitan area. Between January 1 and March 31, WCC saw 128 new clients for issues relating to family violence, up 50 per cent on the previous quarter. Ms Fualau warned cutting community legal services would escalate existing problems. “It only takes one incident to put the family budget out of kilter,” she said.

The annual ANZ Tennis Hot Shot of the Year competition rewards budding tennis stars around Australia for their participation, enthusiasm and enjoyment of the game. Chantelle dreams of one day playing on centre court at Melbourne Park like her idol Victoria Azarenka. “My goals are to keep getting better with lots of practice so that one day I can play in the Australian Open,” she said. Fifty-four people were arrested during a two-day police blitz across Whittlesea and Darebin. As part of Operation Influx, police increased their presence across the two municipalities in a bid to reduce vehicle-related crimes and residential burglaries. The 54 arrests were for a range of offences, including theft from a motor vehicle, theft of a motor vehicle, drug possession, criminal damage and drug and drink driving. Twenty-two people were charged and bailed, while five were remanded in custody. Police checked almost 400 vehicles, spoke to 495 people and issued 118 penalty notices during the blitz. Three search warrants were executed, with police seizing a stolen Mercedes Benz with false plates, drug paraphernalia, a large quantity of GHB (also known as grievous bodily harm) and stolen computers and laptops. Sixty-eight intelligence reports were created for further investigation. Superintendent Tim Hansen said police are committed to making Whittlesea and Darebin safer. “This … is a great example of how we can disrupt crime,” he said. “We know that proactive policing can detect and prevent crime before it occurs. “We’ve seen an immediate drop in certain offence categories compared to the same time last month.”

Great wall of Broady A Broadmeadows wall that is regularly targeted by vandals will be transformed by local youths. The wall on the corner of Freda and Widford streets is part of the Olsen Place shopping centre. Since it was built in 2013, it has been subjected to defamatory symbols and illegal tagging. In a bid to improve the amenity of the area, Hume council, together with the Australia Light Foundation, Hume Valley School and sustainability group, HumeUs, will create a mural and vertical garden featuring 300 plants on the wall. Young people aged between 14 and 24 helped design the mural. Mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou said the vandalism was costly to remove and had made residents feel unsafe. “The mural and vertical garden will make it harder for vandals to etch their tags and the display shall be well-lit at night, thanks to
globes which are powered by solar energy,” Cr Patsikatheodorou said. “This is a positive initiative that aims to discourage youth from vandalism and beautify a part of Broadmeadows.” As part of the project, the council held workshops with local youths to demonstrate the impact of graffiti on the community. The project has been funded by a $24,800 state government grant. The mural and garden will be officially opened on Saturday, June 4 at 10am. Call to cut pokie numbers By Laura Michell A Whittlesea taskforce set up to target problem gambling in the municipality has called for a reduction in the number of gaming machines allowed in each venue, particularly those located in shopping centres. In a submission to the state government’s current review of gaming machine arrangements, the Whittlesea Interagency Taskforce on Gambling said it believes the limit of 105 electronic gaming machines (EGMs) per venue needs to be cut.
‘‘
Whittlesea … experiences very high levels - Taskforce submission of harm
’’
The review has sought community views on current and future gaming machine arrangements around Victoria. The Whittlesea taskforce submission said the suburb was experiencing more harm from gambling because of the large number of venues
in shopping centres. While current planning laws don’t allow gaming venues in shopping centres, past legislation permitted them. “The highest loss venues in Whittlesea are all in shopping centres,” the submission stated. “Whittlesea does not have particularly high [electronic gaming machine] density, but experiences very high levels of harm because so many machines are in shopping centres, particularly those at Epping Plaza Hotel, the Plough Hotel and the Bundoora Hotel, all of which are in the top 10 high-loss venues in Victoria.”
Whittlesea has 684 gaming machines, with annual revenue of more than $100 million. In 2014-15, the average annual revenue per machine was $148,600, data from the Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing reveals. Epping Plaza Hotel, with 100 machines, recorded the highest take per venue in the state, $21.13 million in 2014-15. The taskforce also called for no new gaming machine licences to be approved when current licences expire in 2022, believing more licences will negatively impact on the community.

VOTING RULES HAVE CHANGED?
Make your vote count this federal election Saturday 2 July At this year’s federal election, the way you vote for the Senate has changed and it’s important that you understand how to vote correctly. On the large white Senate ballot paper, you can choose to vote either above or below the line. If you choose to vote above the line, you now need to number at least 6 boxes. Put the number ‘1’ in the box for the party or group that is your first choice, a ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you’ve numbered at least 6 boxes.
If you choose to vote below the line, you need to number at least 12 boxes, from 1 to 12, for individual candidates in the order of your choice. Voting for the House of Representatives has not changed. On the green ballot paper, you need to number every box, starting with the number ‘1’ for your first choice, ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you have numbered every box. ‘How to vote’ instructions will be clearly displayed on your ballot paper. Don’t worry if you make a mistake — just ask for another ballot paper.
Your vote will help shape Australia.

Ranges want Thompson
Sports shorts Cricket
Former Premier cricketer Matthew Hewat has been appointed coach of Plenty Valley for next season. Hewat, who played 100 first XI Premier games, replaces Michael Sheedy, who stood down for personal reasons. Hewat will be a playing coach. David Love has been named the club’s development coach, while Ben Waterman will come on board to help the fast bowlers.
By Tara Murray Whittlesea Ranges suffered a shock loss against Werribee City on Saturday in National Premier League 2 west soccer. The Ranges, who entered the round second on the ladder, opened the scoring through Atilla Ofli in the 38th minute. The Bees did the damage in a two-minute period in the second half with Domenico Marafioti and Robert Naumoski scoring to give the Bees the lead 2-1. They held on to record their second straight win after not recording a win in their first 12 games. Off field it was a big week for the Ranges, who have been linked with a potential signing of Melbourne Victory striker Archie Thompson. Ranges secretary Sergio Costanzo said that while the club had approached Thompson to join the club, they were waiting for him to finish up with Victory before getting into more serious talks. “Nothing has been finalised,” he said. “The club is definitely interested in getting Archie to play here and we would love for him to play with us. “He’s got one or two offers from other A-League clubs to consider.” Costanzo said that if they were to get Thompson, it would benefit the club as a whole – not just the senior playing group. “He has the potential to help with coaching and look at setting up a coaching school,” he said. “Archie has done lots of clinics at the Ranges through our sponsors … the kids always flock to see him.”

The Northern Knights’ luckless start to the season has continued with another loss in the TAC Cup, this time to Gippsland Power. Travelling to Morwell, the Knights were left to rue a slow start. Once in front, the Power didn’t let up, winning 14.16 (100)-11.6 (72).
Netball
Bundoora got its second win of the Northern Netball League season with a thrilling one-goal win over Greensborough in section 1 on Friday night. The Bulls won 3736 and are sixth on the ladder. In division 2, South Morang, Bundoora 2 and Whittlesea also recorded victories. FOR MORE SPORT, VISIT Web: starweekly.com.au Northern Star Weekly @starweeklysport @star_weekly

SPORT Gymnasts cast their eyes to the top A year ago, Cade Pettie and Katelyn Dullard hadn’t even performed together. Now they are looking for gold at the Australian Gymnastics Championships. The duo, who train at Footscray’s Team Adrenalin, will compete this week in the level seven mixed acrobatic category. It will be the third time at the national titles for Pettie, 17, who won the level seven and level nine men’s pairs categories for the past two years. He started gymnastics as a child when his parents decided that he had too much energy and needed to do something. “I’m pretty excited,” the Doreen resident said. “I’ve changed roles this year. I’ll be the base person this time, doing the throwing, while I used to be the person being thrown around. “It’s good for a change and it was always going to come around that I would do this role.”
Pettie said that despite being together for only a short time, he and Dullard were confident they could have success at the national championships and were already looking longer term. Personally, he would love to join Cirque du Soleil. “Katelyn walked in the door and we started to train together,” Pettie said. “We’re aiming to compete internationally next year.” Dullard has set her eyes on gold at the championships. The 11-year-old only joined Team Adrenalin last year, after starting her gymnastics at Keilor gymnastics. She instantly fell in love with flipping after going to a holiday program last year. Her talent was noticed straight away and coach Melissa Presti quickly predicted she would be good enough to compete at nationals.
“It’s very exciting and I want to win,” Dullard said last week. “There’s some great competition and it will be hard, but it’s fun and it’s a challenge. “I expected to get this far. I train as hard as possible.” Dullard, whose favourite part is flipping, said she loved getting to work with older and more experienced gymnasts such as Pettie and they made it fun for her. Like Pettie, Dullard wants to compete overseas next year and hopes to eventually make the world championships. She also wants to continue up the gymnastics levels and reach level 10, the highest. The duo won’t be the only gymnasts from Team Adrenalin at the championships, with two other pairs and two trios also competing. Tara Murray
Late goal beats Cannons By Tara Murray It was the same old story for the Calder Cannons in the TAC Cup clash with Western Jets on Saturday. As in so many matches this season, the Cannons have been slow out of the blocks and had to play catch-up football. They actually hit the front in the last quarter at Burbank Oval after trailing by 22 points at the last break. But they couldn’t stay there and a late Jets goal clinched an 8.7 (55)-7.11 (53) win. Cannons coach Andrew Johnston said the match was similar to several they had played this season. “The same old story of nearly there, but not quite,” he said. “For a quarter and half we allowed them to get easy ball and we didn’t use the wind in the second quarter as well as we wanted to. “With five or 10 minutes left in the third quarter they had stopped and we looked OK. “We knew it was hard to come back in those conditions and we hit the front but couldn’t sustain it.” Johnston said it was frustrating watching his side play as poorly as it did in the first quarter and a half. “When they follow instructions, we’re as good as anyone in the competition,” he said. “When they go outside the instructions we aren’t as good. “If you make mistakes while following instructions we can handle that. “We’ll keep playing the boys who listen and may start playing more 17-year-olds looking ahead to next season.” Two Sunbury boys, Zachary Guthrie and Bradley Bernacki, were again the standouts for the Cannons. Bernacki is still 16 and in his first year in the under-18 side. “There’s been sensational development by Zach this season,” Johnston said. “Brad has been sensational playing on the best midfielders in the competition. He has stood up and led the way and showed the older guys how to go about it. “He was injured for a lot of pre-season and I wasn’t sure about what he could do. They kept telling me he was in our best 25 players. Now I’d say he’s in our best five.” Ryan Baker also impressed in his best game for the season. The Cannons remain 11th on the ladder with two wins in eight matches. Tyson Lever, Cannons captain on Saturday, looks to get the ball out of the contest. (Shawn Smits)

Bloods still up for the fight Lalor isn’t panicking despite winning only two of its first six games in the Northern Football League division 2 season. Last year’s runners-up is struggling to find the level of momentum it had late last year and has been made to pay. On Saturday, Lalor was competitive in the first half against North Heidelberg before being given a football lesson in the second. The Bloods kicked just three goals in the second half to lose 18.17 (125)-9.4 (58), after trailing by eight points at the main break. Bloods’ president Rodney Lowry said they would take a lot out of the loss. “We had a great first half and then faded away,” he said. “They gave us a lesson in football – they are one of the best sides in the competition. We need to regroup and get ready to take on Hurstbridge.” Todd Hughes kicked four goals for the Bloods and was named his side’s best. Despite winning only two matches, the Bloods are just a win outside the top four after playing every team once. “Honestly it is the closest competition I’ve seen,” Lowry said. “The top two sides will probably clear away, but there’s still 10 rounds to go.” The Bloods will have to do it without Ben Curtiss, who has been de-registered after copping an eight-week suspension that put him over the 16-game suspension limit for local football. “We appealed and were unsuccessful,” Lowry said. “He is one of our best players and a big part of our club. We’ll absolutely still have him involved, just not playing.” Lowry said the club would look at trying to get Curtiss re-registered for next season. Also sitting on two wins is Thomastown. The Bears lost to Panton Hill 19.13 (127)-10.10 (70) on Saturday. Six goals to Gary Moorcroft led Bundoora to a 11.8 (74)-8.8 (56) win over Northcote Park in division 1. Whittlesea suffered a 96-point loss to Macleod. In division 3, Epping, Mernda and South Morang won their matches. Epping remains on top of the ladder, percentage ahead of St Mary’s and Mernda. South Morang is fourth. Tara Murray 17 NORTHERN STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 31, 2016

Promoted Mill Park wants top four spot, and respect For Mill Park, this season isn’t about winning the championship; it’s about gaining respect in FFV state league 4 north. After going through last season unbeaten in state league 5 north and losing only three games the season before, Mill Park has become accustomed to winning. But president Jack Kyriacou says this season presents a new challenge. “We’ve gone up a division and are sitting mid-table,” Kyriacou said. “It’s been a bit of a reality check after winning so many games in a row, but we knew it wasn’t going to be like last year. “We want to consolidate and show the other sides we aren’t mucking around.” Kyriacou believes Mill Park, sitting eighth on the table with two wins, four draws and three losses, is already getting the respect it wants from other sides in the division. Its most recent result was a 3-1 loss to FC
Strathmore on Saturday. “We want to make sure we’re a force but also respectful of who we’re playing,” Kyriacou said. “We want to finish somewhere we can use as a base to go up a division. “Some players have thrived at taking the next step, while others have had a reality check on what’s needed at this level. “If we finish top four we’d be where we want to be.” It’s a good sign for the club that it has managed to hold on to most of its players from last season while new players have signed up. “We didn’t go out and recruit, but two or three players came here and they’ve fitted in well,” Kyriacou said. In the same division, top-of-the-table Epping City remains unbeaten after thrashing Watsonia Heights 7-1. Plenty Valley won 4-3 over Marcellin Old Collegians, while Bundoora United lost 3-0
to Boroondara Eagles Carey. In state league 2 north-west, Sporting Whittlesea drew 1-1 with Sunbury United, while Hume United was thrashed 4-0 by Hoppers Crossing. Upfield had a 4-0 win over Darebin United in state league 3 north-west to stay in touch with the ladder leaders. Whittlesea United continued its good form with a 3-2 win over La Trobe University, while Lalor United lost 4-2 to Williamstown. In state league 5 north. Greenvale United was among the winners. Jets back in the pack By Tara Murray Greenvale is in territory it has not often found itself in recent years, having suffered three straight losses in Essendon District Football League premier division. Losses to Keilor and Maribyrnong Park didn’t make the Jets’ task on Saturday against reigning premier Aberfeldie any easier. The Jets football was riddled with mistakes and turnovers. In each of the first three quarters, they had control early and the ball spent plenty of time in their forward half, but disposal into the 50 was terrible. Like all good sides do, Aberfeldie made them pay on the scoreboard, while also restricting the Jets to just three goals in the first three and a half quarters. Aberfeldie went on to win 15.14 (104)-6.7 (43). Jets coach Shannon Grant kept the players behind closed doors for about 15 minutes after the final siren. “We had some pretty honest conversations in the rooms and we’ll do it again during the week,” Grant said. “We need to get back on the track and make sure we work hard and improve our game. We have to have the courage to get better from it.” Grant said that in the past two rounds, the Jets had moved away from playing their brand of football. “We’ve certainly got to have a look at that and address a few things,” he said. “Make sure we band together, stick together and work on it. “We turned the footy over too much. Our effort and intent around the footy wasn’t too bad for most of the day. [But] when you lack care and responsibility around the footy as much as we did, good sides will hurt you when they get the ball.” The result puts the Jets back in the pack and sharing a 4-3 record with three other sides. “We’ll find out about a lot of our group in terms of where they are at from here on in,” Grant said. “We need to get back to playing the brand of footy we know we can play. We certainly have got some work to do.” In division 1, Craigieburn monstered Taylors Lakes in a 31.14 (200)-5.6 (36) win. The Cloke brothers were again dominant up forward, Cameron kicking 12 goals and Jason kicking nine in best-on-ground performances. Westmeadows won a thriller against Tullamarine, sneaking home by a point. Looking the likely winners, the Tigers had to hold off a last-quarter comeback from the Demons to win 12.12 (84)-13.5 (83). Jordan Foster kicked six goals for the winners. Roxburgh Park sits atop the division 2 ladder after beating Coburg Districts 14.8 (92)-11.7 (73). 18 NORTHERN STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 31, 2016
Pacers lose again, but win looks closer There was more pain at the weekend for Whittlesea Pacers, who are still without a win after 14 games in the Big V women’s state basketball championship. After a slow start to their first season in the top division, the Pacers have shown signs lately that a win may not be far away. But it will have to wait at least another week after a 70-58 loss to Warrandyte on Saturday night. The Pacers, without last year’s B&F winner Emmie O’Nial, looked good in the first half and were able to hold a half-time lead. But with the Pacers scoring only one field goal in the third quarter, the game turned in the Venom’s favour. Despite this, the Pacers were only one point down at the last break before the Venom took control. Trudy Armstead top-scored for the Pacers with 15 points. Meanwhile, Hume City Broncos women’s side continued on its winning way with weekend victories over Melbourne Tigers and Southern Peninsula. Against the Tigers on Saturday night, the Broncos put the foot to the pedal, jumping out to a fast start. And with a 29-point lead at the main break, the Broncos’ starters got a wellearned rest with every player bar Samara Gallaher playing 10 or more minutes in the 92-45 win. Reigning two-time MVP Colleen Planeta top-scored with 27 points. It was a closer affair against the Sharks on Sunday and only three points separated the sides going into the last quarter before the Broncos stepped up a gear to win 76-61. Planeta was again busy, scoring 19 points and pulling down 13 rebounds. Craigieburn’s misery continued with both senior sides losing. The women’s division 1 team was again plagued by poor shooting in a 61-50 loss to Camberwell. The men’s division 2 side was left to rue a slow start against Mornington on Saturday night. Trailing by 12 points at half-time, the Eagles got the margin back to three at the last break before succumbing 74-69. Kane McNamara top-scored with 16 points.
It was a tough day on Saturday for Greenvale, including Matthew Smith. (Shawn Smits)
