Ex-mayor faces charges
‘‘
If you are going to be lying to the voters ... people have a right to - John Fry know
A farmers’ market is on the cards for Whittlesea. A council survey exploring the idea has attracted widespread support, with a post about the survey on the council’s Facebook page receiving almost 800 likes and 200 comments and being shared more than 100 times. The survey is being carried out by research consultant and Eltham Farmers’ Market operator Chris Chapple. He described the response to the survey as “astounding”. Yan Yean berry farmer Hans Hoffmann is among those backing the market. Mr Hoffmann, who has been selling produce from his Just Picked Berries and Fruit farm at the Eltham market for about three years, said farmers’ markets were helpful in establishing a reputation and attracting buyers. Felicity Ashman from Urban Markets and Fred Blevin from Eynesbury Homestead (pictured) were part of the recent inaugural Eynesbury market. To complete Whittlesea council’s survey, visit: www.whittlesea.vic.gov.au before Friday.

The Local Government Act prohibits a person from serving on a council if they are convicted of an offence which is punishable by imprisonment for two or more years, regardless of how long the person is sentenced for. Photographs of Mr Fry’s arrest were posted on Facebook last Friday by Cr Ricky Kirkham. In one photo, Mr Fry is kneeling on the ground with an aerosol can next to him, while another shows him being put in a police van.

A Whittlesea council candidate arrested last week for allegedly vandalising posters of his opponents has vowed to continue his campaign for election. South-east ward candidate John Fry was arrested by police at University Hill, Bundoora, last Friday after being restrained by a member of the public. He was charged with criminal damage and bailed to face court at a later date. Mr Fry, who served on council for 21 years before losing office at the 2012 election, told Star Weekly the charge would not stop him contesting the election. The four-time mayor said he did not think his arrest and the criminal damage charge would harm his chances of winning a seat on council. According to his candidate statement, Mr Fry is seeking re-election on a ‘no corruption’ platform. “I have always said you have got to stand up against injustice and if you’re going to stand up, you have to take the consequences,” he said. Mr Fry said he spray-painted ‘RAT’ on the posters, believing the candidates were misleading voters. “If you are going to be lying to the voters in the area … people have a right to know,” he said. According to the Victorian Electoral Commission, Mr Fry is free to continue his campaign.

Wollert, Epping North rail hope By Laura Michell The rail network could be extended to Wollert and Epping North to ease congestion on the area’s crowded roads under an Infrastructure Victoria proposal. A report by the independent advisory body is a 30-year vision for the state that includes plans for road and transport upgrades as well as improvements to ageing facilities. It recommends that the state government complete a feasibility study for the creation of a high-capacity transport link to connect Wollert
and Epping North to the rail network within five years. It believes the link will be required in 15 to 30 years and would provide residents with a viable alternative to using cars for local trips and commuting to Melbourne. Infrastructure Victoria has suggested the government consider the use of rail and buses to create the link. While Whittlesea council is pleased Infrastructure Victoria has identified the need for a transport link in the growing area, it is pushing for an extension of the rail network rather than the use of buses.
‘‘
The extension … is a critical transport project
’’
- Nick Mann
City transport and presentation director Nick Mann said that eventually 52,000 people would live in Epping North and 32,000 would live in Wollert, placing a significant additional burden on an already congested road network. He viewed a rapid bus service as a short-term measure.
“The extension of heavy rail from Lalor station to Epping North and Wollert is a critical transport project for current and future residents of these growth areas,” he said. Epping North resident Tony Francis backs the extension of the rail network from Lalor, saying trains would be able to move residents faster than buses. He said traffic through Epping moved at “walking pace” in peak periods. He believes the rail extension is needed sooner rather than later, fearing that the area will become unliveable.
Health hub for Craigieburn
Whittlesea flattens the fizz factor
Craigieburn residents will soon have better access to healthcare, with a new medical centre to open its doors next year. The $6 million centre on the corner of Central Park Avenue and Aitken Boulevard is being built by developer Stockland for healthcare provider Primary Health Care (PHC). It will boost the number of GPs in the suburb, with Craigieburn’s ratio of GPs to residents currently below the metropolitan average. The suburb has 2.1 GPs per 1000 people, which is half the Melbourne average. As well as GPs – whose number has not yet been revealed by PHC – the 1500-square-metre centre will have a pharmacy, dentists, radiology, physiotherapy, pathology and diagnostic imaging services. PHC medical centres general manager John Houston said the Craigieburn centre would provide affordable health- care. “With Craigieburn expected to grow by about 19,000 people by 2036, the new centre will play a critical role in providing healthcare to this growing community,” he said. Work started on the centre last week; it’s expected to open in mid-2017. Stockland Group executive Stephen Bull said it was the first healthcare centre to be developed by Stockland. “Whether you’re a young family visiting the dentist or a retiree going for your weekly GP visit, it’s all right there on your doorstep,” he said.
Buying a can of fizzy drink or an energy drink in Whittlesea will be more difficult next week, with food outlets and sports clubs ditching sugary beverages. As part of Children’s Week (October 22-30), the council is asking retailers, schools, sports clubs and community centres to remove sugary drinks from fridges and canteens. Community wellbeing manager Neville Kurth said some sports clubs and more than 30 retail outlets had already signed up. “Parents and their children are faced with a barrage of creative marketing and in-store displays promoting and selling sugary drinks and this can make it difficult to make healthy choices,” he said. “We’re not telling parents what to buy for their kids – we’re simply asking food outlets to allow parents to make choices without the added pressure of ‘pester power’ or ‘in-your-face’ marketing. “This campaign is all about supporting parents to make a healthy change for their children.” Last year’s campaign resulted in 55 food outlets, 65 schools and early learning centres and eight sports and leisure centres removing sugary drinks from view. YMCA venues in Whittlesea found that residents were supportive of outlets reducing the visibility of such drinks during a three-month pilot last summer. Car thieves partial to the north By Laura Michell About 34 cars are stolen in the outer northern suburbs each week, new data from the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council reveals. The council named Whittlesea and Hume as car theft hot-spots, with statistics revealing 765 cars were stolen from Whittlesea in 2015-16. In Hume, there were 1026 car thefts. The car theft rate in both municipalities jumped by more than 30 per cent from 2014 to 2015. The data revealed Hume as the top

’’
municipality for car thefts, while Whittlesea was fifth. The council found that in 2015-16, car thefts in the outer northern suburbs most frequently occurred in Craigieburn (255), Epping (188), Campbellfield (166) and Bundoora (140).
Most cars stolen in Hume and Whittlesea are short-term thefts of vehicles which are later dumped. The rest are stolen for profit. Nissan Pulsars built between 1995-2000 were the most commonly stolen car in both municipalities, followed by Holden Commodores built between 2006-13. The data has prompted police to warn owners of Pulsars to do more to keep their cars safe. In Whittlesea, 48 Pulsars were stolen, while 40 were taken in Hume. Victoria Police north-west metropolitan region crime prevention officer Craig
McDonald said older cars, such as Pulsars, were easy targets for thieves because they lack immobilisers. He urged owners to fit their cars with club locks or electronic immobilizers. “The door locking mechanisms on these cars are poor – there is no alarm and [thieves] know exactly how to steal them,” he said. “If you know you might be a target, get a club lock, at least for peace of mind.” Leading Senior Constable McDonald said it was important that people remembered to lock their cars.
Headstones and history For the past 10 years, Lindsay Mann has been researching the history of Yan Yean cemetery and the people buried there. Next week, the local historian will share his work with the community during a one hour talk at Whittlesea library. Mr Mann began researching and writing a book about the cemetery, outside Whittlesea township, at the request of the Yan Yean Cemetery Trust. He said the cemetery started as a casual burial ground in 1854 and was formalised in 1855. The cemetery is still in use. “There are a whole heap of things that are interesting about it – from its reason for being there to the pioneers and early settlers [buried] there and their stories,” he said. “The earliest official grave from 1855 is that of William Johnstone, who was the father of one of the trustees.
“Moses Thomas’ is the largest grave – he owned a farm at Mernda.” Mr Mann hopes his talk, part of Yarra Plenty Regional Library’s Local History Month, will inspire others to learn about the local area. Tales of Yan Yean Cemetery will be at Whittlesea library, 57-61 Laurel Street, Whittlesea, on Wednesday, October 26, from 2-3pm. Details: 9716 3028 Laura Michell

Access key to stopping violence By Laura Michell Faced with one of the highest rates of family violence in the state, Whittlesea council will use a Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) grant to ensure public buildings are more welcoming and inclusive places for all genders. The council was one of 10 to receive funding from the MAV’s local government prevention of violence against women grants program. The grants were distributed to councils undertaking projects that educate and support communities about stopping family violence. Whittlesea council plans to use its grant to
develop guidelines to ensure that when new community facilities are built they are equally welcoming of all genders. Council community services director Russell Hopkins said the project was based on research that gender inequality was one of the key drivers of violence against women. “Research shows that the way community facilities are designed can unintentionally exclude women and girls, men and boys,” Mr Hopkins said. “By designing our facilities to ensure they encourage gender equity, councils can provide environments where women and men can

participate equally.” He said the facilities would feature gender inclusive designs, such as flexible change rooms, family-friendly social spaces and baby change equipment in mixed-gender toilets. Council centres, including kindergartens, sports pavilions, neighbourhood houses and
maternal and child health centres, would be included in the project. In 2015-16, 2868 family violence incidents were recorded in Whittlesea by police, up four per cent from the year before. “By improving gender equality, we can reduce violence against women,” Mr Hopkins said. MAV chief executive Rob Spence said the grants would help the work councils are already doing to address family violence. “Violence against women is not exclusive to one municipality. It’s a national problem,” Mr Spence said.
Passion and principles Roxburgh College principal Fernando Ianni is passionate about helping disadvantaged students make the most of their education. The school has students from migrant and refugee backgrounds, some of who have limited English skills, face family struggles or experienced war in their home countries. Mr Ianni believes their futures shouldn’t be determined by the disadvantages they face. To help students, Mr Ianni has introduced initiatives at the school such as refugee support groups and vocational programs for disengaged students. His dedication to his students has been recognised by the Victorian Education and Training Department, with Mr Ianni named as a finalist in the education excellence awards. Mr Ianni is one of three principals in the running to win the outstanding secondary principal award.
Mr Ianni, who started teaching in 1981, has been principal at Roxburgh College for nine years. He said teaching “came out of left-field” for him. “I was studying to be an accountant and did some work experience and started to realise this was what I wanted to do,” he said. “I get a buzz when I am able to help a young person. I have seen kids at risk of not completing school, complete school and go on to good things.” The award winners will be announced on October 28. A WORD FROM THE PRINCIPAL The Kilmore International School
(Supplied)
T
he Kilmore International School is an independent, non-denominational, co-educational boarding and day school for about 400 academically motivated local and international students. Classes are offered from years 3 to 12 with boarding available from year 7. The Kilmore International School has a track record of academic achievement. More than half of last year’s graduates had an ATAR of at least 90 and about a quarter attained 95 or higher. Most local students live in the region or commute from the northern suburbs of Melbourne. The curriculum in years 3 to 10 is based on the Australian curriculum and is designed to challenge students. Our inspiring, experienced and highly qualified teachers share a commitment to engage and monitor each student and provide a year’s growth in learning for a year’s input of teaching. As we are an international school, all students are required to study Mandarin from year 3 but may study other languages such as Indonesian and German in later years. After-school supervised study is available from year 5 with subject tutorials offered from year 10. In years 11 and 12, students study for the International Baccalaureate Diploma, which emphasises inquiry based and independent learning. The Kilmore International School is a residential college. Boarders, the “heart and soul of the school, experience a family atmosphere where girls and boys from country Victoria, Melbourne and from overseas become part of a close-knit international learning community. Full or weekly boarding is available. House parents, the head of boarding, medical staff and kitchen staff are responsible for the safety and welfare of boarders. All boarders are members of the local golf club and leisure centre. Supervised study and evening tutorials are provided from 7pm.
We have a strong system of pastoral care in which homeroom teachers play a key role. Students experience an exciting and stimulating cross-curricular program. For example, students can play a musical instrument, perform in school plays, take part in inter-school sport, attend excursions, write articles for school publications, enrol in state and national academic competitions, participate in public speaking and debating tournaments, join the Duke of Edinburgh program and attend the fun-filled annual
camp. All students are members of a “house, which fosters the strengthening of social skills and friendships. Leadership roles are strongly encouraged. Student captains lead weekly assemblies, select fundraising activities and write for the school newsletter. We want our graduates to be confident and responsible citizens and leaders. It is the early years of education that lay the foundation for future academic success. Children need to be in a learning environment where they are valued by their teachers, free
from distractions and are taught to develop effective study habits. That is why we are building a new state-of-the-art primary school that will open in 2017. I invite you to visit and take a tour of The Kilmore International School. Andrew Taylor, principal The Kilmore International School, 40 White Street, Kilmore. The top spot for training taxi drivers S
ilver Top Taxi’s Driver Training Centre manager John Orchard believes there are plenty of people out there with the skills, patience and personality needed to be good taxi drivers – but only a select few can combine the three traits to become successful. John says that all drivers, no matter the mode of transport, must be able to drive safely and must have up-to-date knowledge of road laws. “Without the proper training, many drivers lack the ability to transport passengers from point A to point B,” he says. “Silver Top Taxi’s Driver Training Centre understands the importance of driver competence and the necessity for all drivers to keep up with the change in roads. “The centre was established to offer training to those seeking employment in the taxi industry. We offer training for new drivers and current drivers looking to better their skills.” The well-known business conducts training for Silver Top Taxis, West Suburban Taxis and Frankston Radio Cabs – and all of these businesses are currently seeking drivers. Passionate about improving taxi driver skills, the trainers are all highly qualified and have a wealth of experience under their seatbelts. “Silver Top Taxi Driver Training Centre has a partnership with Wodonga TAFE
and all training has been designed to meet industry standards,” says John. “Our trainers have experience in customer service and all have worked in the transport industry. We take a hands-on approach – all we want is to see drivers succeed in their careers.” The company offers an array of services and eligible students can receive Victorian government funding. “We offer new driver courses, industry induction programs, accounts and quality control courses, and Wheelchair Accessible Taxi (WAT) courses. In partnership with Wodonga TAFE, we are the Taxi Services Commissions Practical Assesment Centre for the Wheelchair Accessible Taxi Endorsement,” says John. “Our overall aim is to make drivers more professional, improve their customer service skills and ensure they’re up-to-date with current regulations and practices.” Students can take full and part-time courses and, upon completion of training, receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment from Wodonga TAFE. Silver Top Taxi’s Driver Training Centre is the authorised supplier for Silver Top Taxis driver merchandise such as uniforms, coin dispensers and shift books. On Site screens out the nasties S
ummer is fast approaching, but we know all too well Melbourne seasons can blow up anything from a chilly breeze to a heatwave. And that’s where family-owned On Site Flyscreens come in. The firm was opened by Simon Geddes more than 17 years ago, with brother Ben joining him in 2006. It specialises in the manufacture and installation of roller shutters, along with flyscreens, screen doors, grilles and security doors. Simon says roller shutters are great additions to homes for any season and for two important reasons. “Melbourne’s seasons have lots of temperature extremes, and roller shutters have great insulation qualities,” he says. “In a classic Melbourne spring, we can get frosty mornings through to warm afternoons so on days when things get unexpectedly uncomfortable, home owners can down their shutters to alter internal temperature and save on energy bills. “Roller shutters are also good at deterring unwelcome interest so they’re a highly recommended security investment.” Simon wants you to share his interest in installation, so mention this story for a 30 per cent discount (on roller shutters only). Now, there’s not a good business around that doesn’t lay claim to great customer service, but, as Simon says, they really do offer “that bit extra”. “Our team, dependent only on weather and parking, can usually have a flyscreen measured, made and fitted on the spot,” he

hittlesea Bowls Club coach Nick McIntyre, in a long and decorated state and regional representative career, has quietly worked in the background developing some of the best young talent in the state. He was involved in the early coaching of rising star Josh Corless, 17, who this year played with Nick, 35, in the Whittlesea senior team, winning the Australian Sides Championship for the first time in 14 years of competing. Passionate about his club, Nick is helping to drive a massive $4.5 million development aimed at making it even more of a community hub than it already is. “In conjunction with the massive redevelopment, we’ve established a Whittlesea Wizards junior lawn bowls academy,” he says. “We’ve also launched a scholarship program to help bring talented juniors already involved in sport to the club. “This is a holistic program to help those hoping to make a name in the sport. It covers all career aspects, including at school where the scholarship helps with fee, uniform and book costs.” Phase one of the club’s redevelopment has been completed with the opening of a brand new commercial kitchen, along with an exciting new menu featuring a combination of old favourties and modern dishes. Seniors meals are available for lunch and dinner, and there are also lunch specials and a kid’s menu. Italian flavours shine in Donnybrook A
parcel of Italy slap in the middle of farming country in Donnybrook, Monteleone Restaurant is a cracker of a place, whether for “occasion” nosh on white linen, a wood-fired pizza with a sangiovese in the alfresco area, a chic wedding, lively family party with a cool band or weekend lunch with the gang. Cheese artisans for five generations, the Monteleone family presents a light-filled restaurant, fitted out with a clever mix of elegance and rusticity. It beautifully references its milieu and its Neapolitan heritage. New chefs Mario Passanisi and his wife Maria say the food is inspired by having many of the ingredients at the back door. “Our fresh produce is home-grown, herbs come from our kitchen garden and we can hear from the next paddock the cows that give us milk so the family can produce their cheese – right here on the property,” Mario says. “Who doesn’t love that?” The family owns the renowned Donnybrook Farmhouse Cheese shop just across the paddock. Pizza is a Monteleone speciality and the ortolana pizza fits the bill nicely as a shared lunch with a crisp white. Homemade napoli sauce undergirds mozzarella, roasted capsicum, roasted spuds, knobs of feta and bruschetta salsa, with a net of rocket and a balsamic reduction. It shares the menu with nine other pizza classics. Rustic dishes from Italy’s south (think 100 per cent pork sausages, for example) dot the main-course menu, and desserts

GAME, in Epping, offers nationally recognised gym sports including general gymnastics, Kindergym, additional-needs programs and team squads for women and men. “The women’s and men’s team train for two to four hours,” Kim says. “It’s advanced gymnastics.” Kim has been involved in gym sports for more than 22 years and has qualifications in recreation leadership and fitness training. “We also offer programs for babies, crawlers, teens, kids with additional needs, dancers, holiday clinics, private sessions, birthday parties and more,” she says. “Our general ratios are small, with one trainer to eight participants. That increases the gymnasts’ time on skill progression as coaches are on hand to provide lots of positive and useful feedback.” GAME staff members are fully qualified and affiliated with state and national gymnastics bodies. Van dreams a national reality W
hen local brothers Frank and Karl Prosenik started out selling used caravans then advanced to assembling their first caravan in a standard backyard shed, they harboured dreams for the future. However, they couldn’t have imagined that 30 years later they’d be heading up one of the biggest, most respected caravan manufacturing companies in the nation: Supreme Caravans. Frank and Karl, who now employ more than 170 staff in the Hume area and many others across Australia, marked their 30th anniversary by staging a gala event last month, held in their state-of-the-art dealership in Craigieburn. The space was transformed into a stylish function area with staff, industry figures, sporting personalities and politicians from all over coming together to celebrate
a remarkable achievement. The group enjoyed a sit-down dinner to the tunes of a six-piece band, and heard an anecdote or two about the 30-year journey. To crown the occasion, the brothers pulled out the big guns. “We announced the release of a 30th anniversary, limited-release caravan – only 30 will be built – and they are the most innovative and stylish on the market today,” says Supreme Caravans’ co-managing director Frank. “Karl is heading up the production of these beauties at our manufacturing facility in Campbellfield. “It’s where we produce our tough off-road units through to our spacious luxury models.” Karl, also a managing director, says it hasn’t always been easy during their 30 years of manufacturing.
“In fact, it’s getting harder and harder in Australia. But Supreme Caravans is getting stronger and stronger,” he says. “We’ve grown with our suppliers, dealers and employees and are blessed with the wonderful relationships we’ve formed. Building a business from the ground up has its rewards.” The dealership has a range of luxury caravans, suited for travellers who like to hit the roads in style, along with models to suit off-road and all roads in between. A huge range of second-hand caravans is also on the lot. Supreme Caravans, corner Hume Highway and Grasslands Avenue, Craigieburn. Opens 9am-5pm Monday-Saturday. Prestige service puts people first

harles Camilleri, manager of Lyons Body Works Prestige Collision Repairs in Eltham for the past five years, says the ‘prestige’ in the name goes a long way to describing the customer service standards provided here. Lyons has gained its creds over 40-plus years of service and, as Charles explains, the firm has a well-oiled, highly effective way of providing extra customer focus. “It really is a prestige service,” he says. “We generally meet our customers after they’ve had their car damaged in an accident – always a stressful event. “Our immediate response is to assure them they’re in good hands and that, after we thoroughly inspect the vehicle, every step of the repair process and specific damage done will be explained and a fully listed quote given. “We tell them how long we expect the repairs to take – and these can be carried out at a date that suits them. “During the repair period, our customers can have use of a courtesy car if they need one – we have 15 available. And they’ll also get progress updates throughout.” Charles – with 25 years’ industry experience – and his expert team also have a focused process once the customer comes to collect their repaired vehicle. “We’ll again take time to discuss repairs we made, and demonstrate, for example, how seamlessly new panels and paint fit in with the old. “The car will be detailed inside and out, and a lifetime repairs warranty will be provided,” he says. “Then we follow up with a call to ensure
satisfaction with the job – and we even offer a small gift as a way of saying thanks for choosing us.” Lyons also has a 24-hour towing service (call 13 11 17). “If a vehicle is unsafe to drive after a smash, one of our tow truck drivers – all good blokes – will collect the car and bring it back to our workshop,” Charles says.
“From there, we can help organise everything.” Lyons Body Works Prestige Collision Repairs, 47 Susan Street, Eltham. Opens 7am-6pm Monday-Friday and 8am-noon Saturday. Inquiries: 9439 1088 (24-hour answering service) or www.lyonsbodyworks.com.au

Quality and care to make you smile W
hen you sit in his dentist’s chair, mouth open and feeling vulnerable, Manuel Bautista will be thinking of his mum. Co-owner with his practice manager, brother Jose, Plenty Smiles principal dentist Manuel says their practice is totally focused on quality. “Mum’s our gold standard,” Manuel says. “We treat each patient as if they were our mum – with total care, no rush and optimal outcomes in mind. “It’s about highest standards and giving people confidence about their oral health and appearance of teeth.” The medium-size dental practice offers comprehensive treatments that include general and cosmetic dentistry. Dental implants for replacement of missing teeth and retention of dentures are a specialty, as are cosmetic and traditional orthodontics, clear braces and Invisalign. The brothers are on top of all the latest technology, and provide 2D and 3D xray digital imaging on site. Dental impressions are digital, using an intra-oral scanner, so messy and uncomfortable materials are now a thing of the past. Manuel reckons the best bit about being a dentist is carrying out a full mouth restoration and seeing the end results of good dental treatment. “There’s an immediate facial change in the patient, but a much bigger change happens within them,” he says. “The patient goes through a process of self-discovery. Maestros with the mayonnaise T
hey’re called Sandwich Artists ™ at Subway stores and Olivera Jovanovska is chuffed to be known as such – at Thomastown’s newly built Subway, opened only a few months ago. Olivera, who owns the shop with husband Ljupco Jovanovski (Bube) says the title is apt but believes she and her Subway team put another ingredient into their freshly prepared rolls, wraps and sandwiches. “We need to be artists to be able to prepare more than six million possible filling/bread/sauce/salad combos, and to get it right on the plate or as it’s slipped into a paper bag,” she says with a laugh. “But we also like to think we put a bit of love in each making and every service. It’s who we are, and we want our customers to get to know that. “We’re offering people healthy eating options, with the customers themselves driving how to best suit their tastes and even the kilojoule count. We enjoy that. “We have 11 low-fat choices which can have lower kilojoule counts, but in satisfying portions – all the information is available in-house. “If a customer has a bigger hunger to fill, our selection of meats and sauces will do the job. Everyone’s happy, we’re smiling; just how we like it.” The pulled pork, cooked slowly for five hours and served with smoky barbecue sauce, is proving the newest hit between the bread which, by the way, comes in honey oat, Italian herbs & cheese, multigrain, traditional white, and flatbread. Protein comes in the form of beef as

with a quick hit of sweetness: cookies, in choc-chip, double choc-chip, raspberry cheesecake and white choc-macadamia. Olivera and her team are looking forward to putting their eight years’ industry experience to good use and getting to know their neighbourhood customers.

n its 81-year history, Slater and Gordon has built and maintained a powerful reputation as a law firm that fights to achieve the best outcomes, according to associate lawyer Kelly Leydon. Kelly, who has been with the firm for nearly 20 years, heads the family law department in Slater and Gordon’s Epping office. She says the department has seen rapid growth in recent times. “We moved to our present, bigger office premises because the degree of growth demanded it,” Kelly says. Ably assisted by legal assistants Melissa and Khady, Kelly handles all family law inquiries – with first appointments free for new clients. “Melissa and Khady are integral to the support network for our clients and they help every step of the way,” Kelly says. “Like me, they understand our clients are generally facing a very difficult and stressful time, so any way we can make the process smoother is our first consideration. “I find it very rewarding to meet and help people who, under trying circumstances, want simplicity, efficiency and good advice as they navigate towards resolution of their concerns.” Another important consideration is legal costs. “We provide an upfront fixed fee* so our clients know exactly what the costs will be,” Kelly says. “This means they are able to make realistic arrangements about how and when to pay their legal bill.

And it’s not just the supply and installation of refrigeration systems and cooling that the Snowman business is known for. Add heating, electrical, home automation, hot water systems and solar panel installation – it’s an Australian-owned, Melbourne-wide, broad-menu trade services company. ed by sales manager Ron Kish, Northern Kia in Bundoora is an award-winning dealership sitting among the top three Kia dealerships in the state. Modest about any of his achievements, Ron acknowledges, however, that this is no mean feat. “The Dealer of the Year award is huge,” he says. “It’s given to the best of the best, with stringent criteria applied. “While it’s great to have the dealership singled out for such high commendation, I’m also chuffed to have been part of Northern Kia’s more than 20-year presence in the local area. We were actually one of Melbourne’s pioneer dealerships, and we’re still powering on.” Ron’s own 17-year history in the automotive industry has given him the skills to teach and develop a high-calibre, knowledgeable team. He also likes to make the sales process as smooth and hassle-free as possible for customers. “We enjoy a chat with customers over a cup of coffee, swapping a bit of good-natured banter, as it’s good to be in a relaxed frame of mind when choosing a car,” Ron says. “It’s a big purchase and deserves plenty of time to get advice and talk about which vehicle might best suit lifestyle and budget. “I also feel pretty confident that once showroom visitors check out our new Sorento and Sportage models, for example, their decision will be easier. But, of course, we have the full range of Kia models – along with a big selection of used cars.”

It’s the age of caravanning T
he first caravan produced by New Age Caravans seven years ago was such a success that it set an industry benchmark for style and innovation. The company has since gone from strength to strength – mainly, says manager Scott Webster, through consistently applying the latest technology and using cutting-edge construction methods. “From the start, New Age has understood what people want in a caravan,” he says. “In just the second year of production, we produced seven different designs that made us the envy of the industry. “Other manufacturers scrambled to keep up with the industry revolution, often copying design concepts we’d developed. These designs were rigorous, combining the best of durability and style to provide a truly new-age caravanning lifestyle.” Now New Age has a 49-model range running from the 23-foot Big Red to an all-new luxury pop-up which was released to acclaim at this month’s Melbourne Leisurefest at Sandown Racecourse. Scott says they’re in the business of supporting their clients’ chosen lifestyle experiences. “Our customers – new and existing – mostly come in with a dream about how they’re going to spend their time caravanning,” he says. “Our team works with them to create their new caravan or helps to source a pre-built van that matches the dream.” New Age Caravans boast the lowest number of warranty claims in the industry. “This is largely due to our water-testing procedures and high quality control
standards,” Scott says. “Our customers enjoy amazing peace of mind in one of our vans and get to travel in style and elegance anywhere within our remarkable country.” Both the Epping facility and the Dandenong facility – a dedicated New Age Caravans retail outlet – also carry out full insurance repair works. The young New Age team members, committed to and experienced in the world of caravans, offer invaluable advice and have a depth of knowledge that regularly wins praise. “We see many customers more than once a year, when bringing their vans in for a vital service or general maintenance after a long trip,” Scott says. “We get to relive their trips through photos and shared memories as they get their vans checked and serviced – a very enjoyable part of the job.” Along with made-to-order caravans, the company has a range of pre-owned vans and carries out all servicing and maintenance. New Age Caravans has recently been acquired by PM Automotive Group, an outfit with a 104-year history and business infrastructure that aligns well with the fast-growing Australian caravan market. Pet project grows to fill a warehouse C
aroline Raso loves her feel-good industry. She can’t see herself doing anything else. As co-owner of Mega Pet Warehouse, Caroline gets to cuddle lots of her customers’ new baby pets. “We all [staff] love meeting and cuddling a puppy, kitten or baby rabbit. It makes our day,” she says. “If we’ve had an especially hectic day, there’s nothing like taking time out to pat or cuddle an animal. They bring out the best in us; their simple lives simplify our own.” Caroline is an animal lover from way back. It’s what drew her to setting up the first Mega Pet Warehouse in 2004, riding the new wave of large warehouse retailing. “The other owners and I felt that pets needed better products than what the supermarkets offered. We wanted it to be big in scope, and a pet-friendly environment where animals felt as at home and welcome as our customers. “We also wanted it to be a place for pet owners to get friendly, knowledgeable advice, from nutrition and flea and worming products to the best toy or bed for a pet – hessian, if it’s a chewer, is the answer.” Caroline and her colleagues clearly found the concept a good fit in the market because they now own and operate four stores – in Epping, Hoppers Crossing, Ringwood and Cheltenham – and carry more than 9000 products on their shelves. As strong proponents of highest-standard animal welfare, the owners and staff agree that, except for fish, no pets are “sold”.
Epping store manager Bianca Spano with staff Michelle, Jason and Chelsie.
“We believe pets definitely don’t belong in shops, nor should they be an impulse buy,” says Epping store manager Bianca. “We’re happy, however, to recommend rescue centres or registered breeders.” With great specials on offer in store, right now is a great time to pop a lead

Old club with new outlook O
n a hot February day in 1974, the bowlers finished their ends on the new green they’d played on for the first time and headed towards the borrowed tent to get a cuppa and slice of homemade fruit cake from the ladies. The tent was their clubhouse and remained so until the end of the year when a tin shed that took its place was thought The Ritz in comparison. Soon after, the Bundoora RSL Bowls Club began playing pennant bowls. Fast forward 40 years, and the renamed Bundoora RSL Bowling Centre, now merged with Watsonia RSL, has two grass greens and a synthetic green for year-round bowls. And the tent has morphed into a large, comfortable clubhouse where the bistro pumps out meals, a monster meat raffle is held on Friday nights and Platinum Poker is on Wednesday nights. The clubhouse also doubles as a great space for parties, weddings, anything – and the centre’s catering outfit serves up modern Aussie and international fare. Another thing that’s changed since the tin shed days is the centre’s barefoot bowls sessions. The serious bowler is catered for beautifully here, with midweek and Saturday pennant and the clubhouse as their social hub. But the centre is seeing an influx of youngsters and groups who are loving the barefoot bowls sessions – from as little as $15 a person, with a basic barbecue and bowls included (packages are tailored to budget).

A fitting home of class and comfort I
t’s been 58 years since McLaughlan Comfort Shoes first carved out a niche in Heidelberg West’s Bell Street Mall and the shop is still in the same family, though now with the second generation. It was Ian McLaughlan’s father who began it all back in 1958. When Ian, and his bubbly wife, Rona, took up the baton 15 years later they knew they were up for building on the store’s reputation for excellence in footwear quality and customer service. Rona says the store still has its ’50s vibe – and that’s a good thing when people these days are hankering for old-school personalised shopping. “If you hold on long enough,” she says, “everything comes back into fashion. “But really, we’ve always been ‘in fashion’ because our range of comfort and orthopaedic shoes for men and women consistently taps into the latest looks in what can sometimes be seen as the dowdier side of shoe styles. “Yes, we do comfort, but we do it with fashion flair. For example, our black and white Doxie by Ziera – one of our newest labels – is a $229 flat shoe that few would pick as an orthopaedic. It just looks stylish.” Men will find a selection of loafers, boat shoes and lace-ups – the Joseph Siebel sandal is a classic to match with shorts or jeans this summer. Ladies labels in stock include Ziera, Klouds, Steplite, Cabelo, Arcopedico, Grosby, Slatters, Rockport, Rieker, Josef, Seibel, and the best washable brand Del

SPORT Revamped Bats signal winning intentions in fine style If early signs are anything to go by, the new look Plenty Valley will be just as dangerous as the side of old. The Bats started the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association north-south season in fine fashion against Brighton on Saturday. The Bats restricted Brighton to 117 before making the runs two wickets down at 2-118. New Bats coach Matthew Hewat said it was pleasing to get a first-up win. “We lost the toss and they decided to bat,” he said. “We were pleased with how the bowlers executed their plans and restricted them from the start. “It was blowing a gale, so we decided to bowl spin from one end. It wasn’t a huge total for the batsmen to chase down.”
Justin Jaensch and Sean Ayres, who opened the bowling, took two wickets each, with the fieldsmen doing their jobs with four run-outs. “They missed a few chances, too,” Hewat said. “It was great to see the pressure created from the bowlers.” Harjinder Singh Chahal finished 57 not out. The Bats are fielding a very new looking line-up this season, with at five players making their debut. Simon Black has come across from Kingston-Hawthorn and Steve Tsonas has made the move from Greenvale Kangaroos, while Luke Robinson and Callum Bowman have come out from England for the season. Hewat has returned to the field, playing for the first time since the 2012-13 season.
“It was great to have a bowl – I haven’t been able to bowl the last few years,” he said. “It’s pleasing to be back out there. I’m feeling fresh.” Among those not returning are Michael Sheedy, Sunan Rubaiyat, Will Wright and Sanjaya Chathuranga Hewat said the key to this season was trying to get the players gelling. “We need to get together as a group,” he said. “There’s a few players who will have different roles. He said Sean Ayres would open the batting after moving through the order last year. “Playing the three formats, we want to get stability at the top of the order,” he said. “We need someone to take opportunities at start of the game and Sean does that.”
Rebuilt Burras shape up By Tara Murray After a year of development, Gladstone Park is hoping to be back among contenders for the North West Metropolitan Cricket Association’s George Luscombe Shield. The Burras struggled last season after losing seven players from the 2014-15 grand final side and missed the finals completely. Captain-coach Andrew Shanahan is hoping they can turn it around this season and return to finals. “We’ve been lucky enough to get a Sri Lankan wicketkeeper-batsman, Suminda Sampath Yagamuni Mendis, who played at Avondale Heights. “Francis Keenan is a fast bowler from Campbellfield, and Dylan Whitfield has come from Officer.” Former captain-coach Matthew Nyhus also returns to the club, while former captain Jaydan Moore returns to the top side after playing in the lower grades last season. Shanahan said the five additions to the side would help develop the younger players who got their chance last season. And those opportunities had arisen from the mass departure of grand final players. “Matthew Harrington is now 18, having come through last season as our main strike bowler,” Shanahan said. “He’ll stay in the side but will be able to slot back a bit [to first-change bowler]. “The depth of our bowling attack means we have seven players who can bowl, with different varieties.” The extra depth means the second XI started this season with eight players from the firsts of 2015-16. After having to call off their round one match due to the ground being unready, the Burras started their season in the Luscombe Shield against Aberfeldie St Johns on Saturday. The Burras made 214, an 80-run partnership between Shanahan (48) and Whitfield (40) being the key to a competitive score. In reply, Aberfeldie St Johns was 3-38 at stumps on day one. Three players had taken a wicket each. Shanahan said having strength back in the top side reflected the strength across the whole club. “We’ve entered five teams this year and have a really strong junior lineup. “The club is going from strength to strength. We’re hoping to emulate what’s going on offfield with what’s happening onfield. In other matches, Northern Lions will need a miracle to chase down Buckley Park’s total of 5-453. Donnybrook made 258 from its overs against Pascoe Vale Central. Gurwinderjeet Singh top-scored with 84 before being run out. Centrals will resume at 0-43. 34 NORTHERN STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 18, 2016
Plenty Valley has recorded an early season win with a strong performance against Dandenong in Women’s Premier Cricket. The Bats made a competitive 173 before being bowled out in the final over of their innings. Sophie Reid made 42 at the top of the order, while Kate Broadmore chipped in with 32 in the middle order. In reply, Dandenong could never get going. After making 24 with no loss, it lost 5-9 to be in trouble at 5-33. After a minor recovery, the last five wickets fell for 12 runs, with Dandenong bowled out for 101. Tara Murray
Cannons vote comes down to final round Ben Ronke won a two-way battle with Zach Guthrie to take out the Calder Cannons Robert Hyde Medal on Friday night. Ronke and Guthrie were the runaway leaders for the Cannons best and fairest award, with the result only determined in the final round of counting. Guthrie had led for much of the count before Ronke hit the lead in the second last round, leading by three votes heading into the last game of the year, the side’s elimination final loss. Ronke polled 15 votes in the loss, compared to Guthrie’s four. Ronke finished on 131 and Guthrie on 117. For both players, it was their first year in the TAC Cup system and both had an impact. Ronke, who played in a Victorian Amateur Football League premiership with Strathmore last season, also played two games with Coburg in the VFL. Guthrie, a Sunbury Lions junior, is the latest member of his family to have an impact at TAC Cup level. His brother, Cameron, now with Geelong, won the club’s best and fairest award in 2010. Guthrie was also awarded the most improved player award, while Ronke won the best on track award. Both players tested at the recent state combine. First-year player Brad Bernacki was third placed on 62 votes, with Hayden Blythe (50) and Karl Brown (39) rounding out the top five. Brown won the leading goal-kicker award. In other awards, James Peters won the Corporal Cameron Baird VC MG Award as the Cannons’ most courageous player, Tyson Lever won the team targets award, Ryan Baker was awarded the coaches award and Campbell Moorfield received the academic achievement award. In other news from the best and fairest night, the club announced Andrew Johnston would remain as coach. Johnston has coached the side the past two seasons. In both years, the Cannons have been knocked out in the opening round of the finals. Tara Murray
Captain-coach Andrew Shanahan top-scored with 48. (Shawn

Upset win, rain divide Roos’ fortunes The Greenvale Kangaroos have scored a confidence-boosting win in just their second match of the Premier Cricket season. With wins few and far between in recent years, the Kangaroos surprised everyone with their victory against Camberwell on Saturday. After winning the toss, the Kangaroos’ middle order led them to a more than competitive 8-194 from 50 overs. Zaheer Hussain top scored with 70 and was well supported by Nathan Massey (56). In reply, Camberwell could manage just 181. Aaron Smillie led the attack with 4-34, while Sunam Gautum grabbed three wickets. The Roos’ win came despite their missing captain Jarrod Leggett. They didn’t have long to celebrate, losing next day to Geelong under the Duckworth Lewis system. This time, the Kangaroos weren’t able to capitalise on a strong start from openers Harry
Dearden (54) and Gautum (51), who piled on 104 for the first wicket. They then lost 10 wickets for 102. Michael Rosendale, with 20, was the nextbest batsman in an innings that ended on 206. Fortunes swung as the Kangaroos took an early wicket; Geelong appeared to be cruising at 2-98 then it lost 3-14 to put the game back on even terms. Play was halted due to rain and with four overs remaining, Geelong was 8-190. Players returned to the field and bowled just two more overs before poor light forced them off again. Geelong won the match under the D.L. format, finishing on 8-196. Smillie and Gautum were again the best of the bowlers with two wickets apiece. Kangaroos coach Stan Nell said they had been in a position to win both matches. “We had a really good win, a fantastic performance on Saturday,” he said.
“On Sunday we were beaten by bad light, rain and Duckworth Lewis. They still needed 11 runs [off 12 balls] and we were backing ourselves to get the wickets.” Nell said the season’s first three matches had shown the side was starting to make inroads. “We’re happy with the direction; the improvements are there. We’re getting to the point where we’ll start to see results. “Our bowling and fielding have been good, but our top order needs to be more consistent. We made 104 off the first 17 overs and then 102 off the rest. If we turn that into a 230 or 240, we win the match easily.” Nell is hoping that Leggett, who missed both matches, will have recovered from his back injury for the next match, against Dandenong on Saturday.
Upbeat at Craigieburn By Tara Murray Craigieburn enters the Bowls Victoria pennant season with a lot of excitement and optimism. The club endured a patchy 2015-16, with a number of players leaving before the season started and having to juggle renovations to their venue in the lead up to Christmas. With all of that out of the way, Craigieburn secretary Jeff Sabransky said the club was looking forward to this season. “It was a nightmare of a season for the club,” he said. “It’s a new season – new club rooms and a new outlook and team. It’ll be a lot easier this year.” With a positive view on the season ahead, Sabransky said the club was looking at making finals and hopefully contending for the division 2 section 2 premiership. The side has started the season splitting the opening two rounds. It was disappointing against Moonee Ponds before an impressive win against local rival Broadmeadows on Saturday with a 102 (16)-82 (2) scoreline. “It was good to get a good win this week, after not such a good week the previous week,” Sabransky said. “There was extra significance on this week – it was a match we had to win otherwise it would have been tough to make finals with another tough round next week. “Broadmeadows are a good club and a good side. Every time we play them at home we win – when we play there, we seem to lose.” Sabransky said the club had managed to retain the playing group from last season, but had added about five players who would play in the firsts team. Among the inclusions are Max Smith, Steve Hall, Brendan Roeschmann and Matt McMaster. “We did get some other players into the club as well,” he said. “The majority of players will come into the ones and make every side better for us.” In premier division, Bundoora RSL remains without a win after the first two rounds. On Saturday, RSL proved no match for Yarraville Footscray. Bundoora took the points in one rink and lost a second by one shot, but was easily beaten in the other two rinks to lose 77 (16)-62 (2). Bundoora already sits 22 points outside the top four. In division 1 section 2, RSL (2) beat Kingsbury 97 (17)-60 (1). Whittlesea had a 72 (16)-67 (2) win against Ivanhoe. Bundoora and Whittlesea are two of the three teams to win both their opening-round matches. In division 2 section 3, Bundoora’s third side won 93 (17)-68 (1) against Eltham, Lalor had a 97 (16)-68 (2) win over Heidelberg Golf and Whittlesea’s second team lost to Montmorency.

Tullamarine cops a belting from Clubbers Tullamarine was comprehensively outplayed by Yarraville Club on the opening day of play in the new-look Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s senior division. With round one postponed due to pitches not being ready for play, Tullamarine got its season under way in a two-day match against the Clubbers. Tullamarine could only manage 140 from its overs, with Emmett Bronca being the main destroyer taking 5-38. The Clubbers didn’t let up with the bat and had secured the first-innings points by the end of day one. They will resume at 2-165. David Zahorodni and Kobe Walters took the wickets for Tullamarine. Greenvale Kangaroos look to be in the box seat after day one of their match against promoted Spotswood. The Kangaroos made the most of winning the toss, making 259 before being bowled out in the final over of the day. Off-season recruit Anthony Barton made 90 at the top of the order. Strathmore made 258 from its overs against Doutta Stars. Stars will resume at 1-2. Keilor and Airport West St Christophers have to wait another week to get under way, with Etzel Street Reserve still not right for play. In north-west A1, Westmeadows will resume at 0-20, chasing Williamstown CYMS’s 182. Former Jacana coach Praneeth Jayasundera, in his debut for the Warriors, took 6-38 off 19 overs. Craigieburn will be after early wickets against Werribee Centrals on day two of their clash. Batting first, Craigieburn made 206, finishing its innings three overs early. Adam Davies was the best of the batsmen, making 50. Centrals negotiated three first-day overs and will resume at 0-2. Roxburgh Park Falcons will need early wickets against Jacana in their north A2 match. Sent in, the Falcons could only make 164 and were bowled out with 20 overs remaining. Sumit Anand top scored with 38, while Aaron Austin made 34 coming in at No.8. Jacana conceded a massive 37 extras. In reply, Jacana will resume at 2-42. Naythan Lynch and Matthew Nayler took the wickets for the Falcons.
Brendan Roeschmann is an inclusion for Craigieburn. (Shawn Smits)

Hume City shows off season signs of NPL ambition It may be the soccer off season, but the action hasn’t stopped for National Premier League side Hume City. City has been busy, having already signed six players for next year. Coach Dean Hennessey said the new signings would give the club a chance to rebuild the squad around several key players who have remained. The club has gone for players who have shown they can perform on the big stage, with Kris Kioussis, Liam Boland, James McGarry, Wayne Wallace, Atilla Ofli and Ersin Kaya signing on. “We’ve signed one of the most dominant midfielders in the NPL, Wayne Wallace,”
Hennessey said. “He was the captain of the Bentleigh Greens and he brings a lot of experience and will help Nick [Hegarty]. “James McGarry, who comes from the Melbourne Knights, is quite big and brings a presence and has played at a high standard in England. “Ersin played at Bulleen and Turkey and is a former player of the club, Atilla has a brilliant season with Whittlesea. He’s another former player with the club – he’s a bit more mature.” Hennessey said he coached Kioussis at Dandenong Thunder, while Boland, who played with Green Gully Cavaliers, has averaged a goal every two games since moving
to Melbourne. He said getting these players was aimed at trying to bridge the gap to the top two to three NPL teams. Hennessey said City was likely to announce the signing of a goalkeeper in coming weeks. The club needs to replace gun keeper Chris Oldfield, who has left the club after five years. He said he expected Oldfield to get an opportunity with an A-League team in the coming years. Oldfield isn’t the only departure, with Craig Carley, Declan Hargraves, Joseph and Peter Franjc and Jeremy Walker also moving on. The signings haven’t just been on the field, with Hennessey signing on in a technical
manager role. He will head the whole of the football department. Hennessesy took over the role of caretaker coach towards the end of the season, when the club parted ways with Louie Acevski, with whom Hennessey remains close. “I came to the club to work with Louie,” Hennessey said. “The chairman wanted me to keep on with some coaching. Part of my role is a mentor role, with David Chick and Steven Gray. I’m still the technical director role – it is a busy time. It’s excited and hopefully a lot of upside.” Tara Murray
Late pick a big win for Bulldog
Deanna Berry is one of the young guns of the new AFL women’s competition. (Jarrod Potter)
‘Unreal’ deal for Demon By Tara Murray New Melbourne recruit Deanna Berry didn’t have long to let the realisation she’d achieved her AFL dream sink in. Having been taken with pick nine, the first of the second round, the 18-year-old had to return to school the next day. “I tossed up whether I would go,” she said. “They called me, telling me the principal wanted me there for a briefing. I ended up running late and they were calling asking for me. Everyone applauded me when I walked in.” The Whittesea Secondary College school captain admitted not a lot of work got done, as everyone wanted to talk about her draft success. Berry, who played for Melbourne Uni this season, said making an AFL team was “unreal”. “There was so many mixed emotions … I was still nervous as it [the draft] had only just 36 NORTHERN STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 18, 2016
started when my name was called out,” she said. “I said to a few people it could be a while before my name is called out, but I was called out at pick nine.” Berry said she had spoken to a few clubs before the draft, but Melbourne wasn’t one of them. Demons captain Daisy Pearce was one of the first people to congratulate her. “I had trained with her at the [AFL Victoria Women’s] Academy and I saw her before the draft and she was asking how I was feeling,” Berry said. “As soon as it happened, she had her phone in my face getting all my emotions.” Berry said being part of the academy had been important in her development. She was 17 when she entered the academy as its youngest player. “I was really happy with the opportunity at the academy this year … it could get my foot in the door,” she said.
Berry was also part of the Vic Metro side that won the Youth Girls Championships on the MCG earlier this year. Berry is the first player drafted out of Mernda Football Club. She played junior football there and was part of the first girls team to play at the club. But she said she never thought her name would be called out in an AFL draft. “Never,” she said. “Growing up with the boys, I had played rep football. The last couple of year sthe AFL has got on board with women’s football. “The boys who I played with didn’t get a crack. Dad is still involved with the club and to represent them is another thing I want to do right.” For now, Berry will turn her attention back to school and completing her VCE exams before heading to the Demons for pre-season next month.
Kirsty Lamb had stopped watching the inaugural AFL women’s draft after about pick 120. For her, football had always been a side project to playing cricket, but she still had the dream of being drafted. At that point in the draft, she thought she had missed her chance this time round. She then received a text message from her best friend and new Collingwood player, Jess Cameron. “I stopped watching and was on my way to cricket training,” Lamb said. “I didn’t think I was going to be picked. Jess then texted me and said, ‘Well done and we’ll be seeing you in the Bulldogs colours’. I pulled over to the freeway and started crying.” The Bulldogs had selected her at 138 – the seventh last pick of the draft. Lamb, who has been playing for Diamond Creek in the Women’s VFL, has had a football presence in her entire life. But until now she’s been better known for her cricket. The Plenty Valley gun has also played for Victoria and the Melbourne Renegades. Lamb is one of at least four talented Victorian cricketers who will be combining both sports. Cameron will play for Collingwood, Emma Kearney will play with Lamb at the Bulldogs, while Natalie Plane was selected by Carlton. Lamb said she would have to sit down with the Bulldogs and work out how she would manage the summer workload of both cricket and football. For now her attention is back on cricket. She played for Victorian Spirit in the opening weekend of the Women’s National Cricket League. Tara Murray
Epping wins a tight tussle Epping had to work hard for a first up win against Bundoora in the Diamond Valley Cricket Association’s Barclay Shield. Resuming at 2-42 needing 148 for victory, Epping’s middle order looked in control early on day two. Once the wickets started falling, they kept falling and the match came down to the wire. Epping got the winning runs with one wicket in hand, captain John Lever finished 44 not out. Old Paradians/St Francis lost its match to Macleod.

ROD’S VERDICT Very pleased I bought this car.
insisted we get the ST-L rather than the base ST (at $37,437 with 4WD) that Rod suggested. I wanted leather seats and integrated navigation and I like the CVT gearbox. After 12,000 kilometres he’s almost at the point of admitting I was right. The driving position is high and comfortable with good visibility and I love the surround camera that makes reverse parking and tight manoeuvring anywhere a cinch. The electronics are user-friendly and intuitive and the cruise control is accurate. The navigation goes into a snit from time to time and has to be reset, otherwise it’s easy to drive, although I’d like faster pick-up in overtaking. There’s generous cabin space and good seating, with electronic adjustment on both sides at the front. The rear seat backs are also adjustable. And there’s a power outlet in the cargo area for a 12-volt fridge. With modest exterior dimensions, it’s not intimidating. I took to it quickly and like driving it.

ccasionally one must put one’s money where one’s mouth is. Last year I suggested a number of cars ideal for the Big Trip around Australia. So when time came for our own Big Trip, we bought one of my recommendations, an X-Trail 4WD. It’s generous inside, compact outside and, while most competitive models offer only full-time 4WD, this has selectable 4WD and diff lock for when the going gets tough. The X-Trail’s problem, is the skinny space-saver spare. Nissan wanted $680 for a full-size wheel without a tyre, but after a lot of looking I found a second-hand one, with a good tyre, for $360. We got a heap of luggage on board but the performance was still good and the economy impressive. The continuously variable auto is nicely calibrated and the handling and ride are both acceptable. And when you’re on the dirt selecting 4WD and then locking the diff is as easy as turning a console dial.
