The carols will be held at the new Craigieburn Anzac Park on Saturday, December 3. There will also be performances by community groups and locals schools, including the Willmott Park Primary School choir. After dark, fear strikes By Laura Michell More than half the residents of Whittlesea and Hume don’t feel safe walking alone at night, a new survey reveals. The 2015 VicHealth survey found that 53 per cent of Whittlesea residents and 59 per cent of Hume residents are scared walking alone in their areas after dark. The finding is significantly higher than the Victorian average of 45 per cent. The survey is based on telephone interviews conducted last year with almost 23,000 people. It also revealed that a higher than average percentage of Whittlesea and Hume residents feel they don’t live in close-knit neighbourhoods,

’’

and that their neighbours cannot be trusted. In both municipalities, 40 per cent of people felt that others in their neighbourhood couldn’t be trusted. Across the state, just 28 per cent of people questioned the trustworthiness of their neighbours. Forty-eight per cent of Whittlesea and Hume residents said their communities were not tight-knit, compared to 39 per cent statewide.

VicHealth chief executive Jerril Rechter said the survey results would help councils in planning for the future. Whittlesea council is already planning to address public safety in the municipality by working more closely with local police and community groups on a new strategy to address negative perceptions of safety, as well as initiatives to prevent crimes. The strategy, which was adopted in August, outlines ways the council can work with Whittlesea police and local groups to help residents feel safer. The VicHealth survey also found that Whittlesea and Hume residents are not getting enough exercise, with 30 per cent of Hume

residents and 24 per cent of Whittlesea’s doing no physical activity, and not eating enough fresh fruit and vegetables. The municipalities also have a higher than average number of smokers. Ms Rechter said the survey was part of VicHealth’s strategy to get one million more Victorians in better health with a greater sense of wellbeing by 2023. “Small changes over time can make a big difference. Setting simple achievable goals, like eating one extra piece of fruit or vegetables per day or going for an additional walk each week, with a view to increasing those goals over time, can make major difference to our health and wellbeing in the long term,” she said.

Tributes flow for asthma victims By Laura Michell Fundraising pages have been set up in honour of a Greenvale high school student and an Epping man who died during the ‘thunderstorm asthma’ epidemic which struck Melbourne last week. Omar Moujalled, 18, and Apollo Papadopolos, 35, were among three people to have died after a thunderstorm on November 21 which triggered asthma in thousands of people across the city, and overwhelmed hospital emergency departments and ambulance services.

Mr Moujalled died on his way to hospital after suffering an asthma attack. He was two days away from graduating from high school. Mr Moujalled was farewelled at Meadow Heights Mosque last Wednesday. The Australian International Academy, where he went to school, said it was greatly saddened by his death. The school paid tribute to Mr Moujalled on its website and in a Facebook post, describing him as an exemplary student who was a much-loved and respected role model. Friends set up a fundraising page, with money raised to be donated to the Human

Appeal Australian Fund to build wells in disadvantaged countries. A fundraiser was also set up to help cover the cost of Mr Papadopoulos’ funeral. The stainless-steel engineer is believed to have died at home despite paramedics’ efforts to revive him. Tributes to Mr Papadopoulos were posted on social media, with friends remembering his “beautiful smile and sense of humour”. The Northern Hospital said it had been inundated with patients experiencing asthma and respiratory issues following the storm. Chief medical officer Alison Dwyer said that

between 5pm on November 21 and 10am on November 22, 383 patients presented to the hospital’s emergency department. “[That’s] compared with 170 from the same period over the previous seven days,” she said. “Over 50 per cent of patients admitted presented with shortness of breath.” The Inspector-General of Emergency Management is leading a statewide review into the emergency and will look at how health and emergency services responded. Health and Ambulance Services Minister Jill Hennessy said Melbourne had experienced a health emergency of an unprecedented scale.

Lessons build healthy communities Students from four Whittlesea schools are showing their community spirit by planting and caring for lemon trees and a herb garden which the community will be able to pick. Whittlesea Secondary College, Whittlesea Primary School, St Mary’s Parish Primary School and Diamond Valley Special Development School pupils planted the trees and herbs on the corner of Walnut and James streets last week. The garden, which is part of the schools’

Lemon Tree Project, comprises three citrus trees, a small herb garden and a bench seat. The project is being backed by Whittlesea council and the Whittlesea Community Garden. It aims to encourage the students to work together to contribute positively towards the liveability, health and wellbeing of the Whittlesea township community. The council’s community development officer, Megan Smithwick said the project was

1216121-DJ06-16 10035628-01

about bringing the community together. “Many people use things like lemons and herbs frequently when cooking and people love the idea of having a nearby place to collect these ingredients as they need them,” she said. “It’s a simple idea to engage people in gardening and an opportunity for a communal space where people can meet and connect.”

Whittlesea mayor Ricky Kirkham accused some of his fellow councillors of playing politics during a fiery first meeting of the new council, in which he faced a dissent motion and threatened to remove two councillors from the chamber less than an hour into the meeting. Councillors started the meeting arguing about where they would sit, after five councillors who are endorsed by Labor – Sam Alessi, Lawrie Cox, Stevan Kozmevski, Kris Pavlidis and Emilia Sterjova – asked to sit together. Cr Kirkham rejected the request and put forward a motion for councillors to be seated in their wards, in keeping with what he described as a long-standing convention of the council. He said he was concerned that allowing the endorsed councillors to sit together would segregate the council. In response, Cr Kozmevski warned that Cr Kirkham was setting a “dangerous precedent”, adding that it was “disgraceful” that the issue had been tabled. “It looks like some people don’t want us who are endorsed to sit together … for the mayor to put this up is disgraceful,” he said. Cr Kirkham’s motion was passed six votes to five. Cr Cox then raised concerns about the accuracy of the minutes of the November 3 mayoral election. His request to amend the minutes was rejected by Cr Kirkham. Cr Kirkham said he wanted his fellow councillors to put the interests of the community first. Laura Michell

A message for our men White Ribbon Day co-founder Michael Kaufman has implored Whittlesea’s men to stand up and speak out to prevent violence against women. Mr Kaufman joined mayor Ricky Kirkham at the city’s White Ribbon Day event on November 24, helping to spread the message of ending family violence. Whittlesea has one of the highest family violence rates in the state, with 2868 incidents reported to police in 2015-16 – a 4.1 per cent increase from 2014-15.

Attendees pledged to do their part to put an end to violence against women. Cr Kirkham said Whittlesea’s family violence rate was unacceptable. “Violence against women is the leading cause of death and disability in women aged 15-45 years [in Australia],” he said. “The cost of violence against women is extremely high in our community and it’s something we are passionate about changing.” Laura Michell

A Broadmeadows woman was fined almost $800 for driving a noisy car. The woman’s Holden Commodore was pulled over in Campbellfield during a joint blitz by Victoria Police and the Environment Protection Authority. The woman challenged the fine in Broadmeadows Magistrates Court earlier this month, but the court upheld the fine, and ordered the woman be on good behaviour for 12 months.

EPA scrutiny on tyre fire risks By Laura Michell

Pram Jam helps babies survive

(Shawn Smits)

Tyre storage and processing businesses across Whittlesea and Hume with high fire risks have been put on notice by the Environment Protection Authority. The EPA, Metropolitan Fire Brigade and Hume and Whittlesea councils are visiting high-risk sites to ensure businesses are managing their fire risks. The visits follow a large blaze at a Broadmeadows tyre recycling facility in January that incinerated about 150,000 tyres and blanketed Melbourne in thick black smoke. The fire burned for four days, with firefighters pouring 10,000 litres of water and fire retardant a minute on to it during its peak. EPA metro manager Dan Hunt said the inspections were part of the organisation’s ongoing compliance and enforcement activities. “Tyre stockplile fires are particularly difficult to control and generate hazardous smoke,” he said. “But simple preventative measures can be implemented to reduce the risk of fire and minimise impacts … We saw these impacts first-hand when a tyre fire at a recycling facility in Broadmeadows created very poor air quality conditions in the local area. “Tyre fires can also be complex to deal with and potentially lead to significant environmental impacts during and post-emergency response. They can also present considerable clean-up costs.” MFB acting chief officer Paul Stacchino said the inspections were necessary to keep the community safe. Non-compliant site operators may be served with EPA remedial notices or council fire prevention notices requiring them to address identified concerns. The EPA may also impose sanctions on businesses.

Maria Dima has hit the pavement every day over the past week to raise money to help premature babies and their families. The Lalor resident signed up for the Mercy Hospital for Women’s Pram Jam – a walkathon to raise awareness and fund help for families experiencing stillbirths and complications from premature births. She wants to thank hospital staff for their care at the birth of her daughter, Tayla. Tayla, 2, was born at 30 weeks after it was discovered that Ms Dima was suffering a rare, life-threatening condition, called HELLP syndrome. Ms Dima said she was unaware she had the condition as its symptoms mimic a normal pregnancy. Following her diagnosis, doctors had only minutes to deliver Tayla to save both their lives. Ms Dima spent two and half weeks in hospital, while Tayla spent seven and a half weeks in the Mercy’s neonatal intensive care unit. “Being born so early, she needed help breathing … she also had feeding and development problems,” Ms Dima said. Ms Dima described the staff in the neonatal intensive care unit as “amazing”. “They were supportive in every little aspect. They were unbelievable with her and every other child in there..” To donate: www.mercypramjam.com.au Laura Michell

End ‘doctor shopping’: Coroner By Laura Michell A coroner has called for improved monitoring of patients’ prescriptions after finding that a Thomastown woman died after “doctor shopping” for a cocktail of drugs. Milica (Mary) Minchev was found dead in her uncle’s Thomastown home on February 26, 2013. She was 48 years old. A coroner’s report into her death was recently released, ruling that she died of drug toxicity from taking oxycodone and benzodiazepines. It was found that in the 12 months before her

’’

death, Ms Minchev was doctor shopping and was prescribed drugs by at least 31 doctors across 12 different medical services in Whittlesea and the northern suburbs. A Coroners Prevention Unit investigation found that Ms Minchev was listed as

drug-dependent by some of the services. Coroner Audrey Jamieson ruled that it was impossible to determine who prescribed the drugs that led to Ms Minchev’s death. She noted that Ms Minchev’s habit of doctor shopping made it difficult for medical professionals to understand the extent of her drug dependency. Ms Jamieson said Ms Minchev’s death was evidence of the need for real-time prescription monitoring in Victoria to make health professionals aware of patients’ prescription history.

The state government announced plans to introduce a monitoring system in the 2016-17 budget. “There appears to have been clear evidence that Ms Minchev was engaged in prescription shopping but doctors did not identify the behaviour or intervene to prevent her access to medication beyond her therapeutic need,” Ms Jamieson said. “It is anticipated that with the advent of Real Time Prescription Monitoring, doctors in Victoria will be assisted to monitor their patients’ medication with far better oversight … than was rendered in Ms Minchev’s case.”

Sports ready students Indigenous high school students from across Victoria visited Bundoora’s La Trobe University last week to learn what it takes to work with top sporting clubs. The university hosted a three-day camp to introduce year nine and 10 Indigenous students to university and sports occupations, including media and sports science. During the camp, the 30 students were given a chance to take part in traditional Indigenous games with the help of AFL Sports Ready. The university’s Indigenous student recruitment manager, Vicky Peters said the students also heard from a range of sports professionals, including from Melbourne Storm, and were given hands-on experience with media technologies. “Sport is a rapidly-growing and significant global industry and offers a range of fantastic career opportunities,” Ms Peters said. “La Trobe also partners with some of Australia’s

most prominent sport organisations so it’s a fantastic opportunity for the students to rub shoulders with Melbourne’s sporting elite. “Many of these students are from rural and regional areas and opportunities like this are scarce. “I hope this experience will give them a real taste for university life and what could lie ahead for them after high school.” Laura Michell

Soccer facility gets green light By Laura Michell

is changing, meaning soccer is growing in popularity and we need to cater for this,” he said. “While council dedicates a significant amount of money to new projects each year, we rely on partnerships with other levels of government to build what our community needs. “The Growing Suburbs Fund enables us to build projects we would otherwise not be able to afford.” Thomastown MP Bronwyn Halfpenny, who visited the reserve last week to announce the

funding, said the $50 million Growing Suburbs Fund was helping provide crucial facilities in Melbourne’s fast-growing outer suburbs. “I am really excited to envisage that there is going to be some great facilities for the community to use,” she said. Work on the soccer facility is expected to begin late next year and be completed in mid-2020. The council said it had also applied for funding for a number of other projects, which it hopes will be successful.

(Damjan Janevski)

A state-of the art soccer facility will be built in Lalor thanks to a state government grant. Last week, the government announced that Whittlesea council would receive $2.95 million from its Growing Suburbs Fund to go towards the $6.98 million facility at Mosaic Reserve. The council will contribute more than $4 million to the project, $1.59 million of which will come from developer contributions. The project will include a multi-purpose

community pavilion and two soccer pitches, as well as car parking, a playground, change rooms, player and referee toilets and public toilets. There will also be an all-weather viewing verandah, a canteen, multi-purpose community social room and picnic area at the reserve. Mayor Ricky Kirkham said the project would meet a growing demand for soccer facilities in the municipality. “The Lalor population is expected to increase by 17.2 per cent by 2035 and the demographic

Hawk pick feels so right

Nine teams in new-look NFL

By Tara Murray

It will be a nine team Northern Football League division 3 competition next season, with the league confirming Reservoir and Laurimar will enter sides. Reservoir returns to the competition after a year in recess, while Laurimar will add senior teams to the junior sides it already fields. Reservoir, which won the division 3 premiership in 2015 before an exodus of players, re-enters the competition after meeting all the obligations set out by the league. So far they’ve had at least 40 players on the track training. Laurimar’s move into the senior competition comes after rapid growth from the club’s junior arm. The club, which joined the NFL junior competition in 2011, fielded 15 junior sides this season. League chief executive Peter McDougall said both clubs had put in a lot of work to get senior teams up and going for next season. The division 3 competition will consist of 18 rounds, with each team to play 16 matches and have two byes. The league’s top division will remain at 10 teams, while division 2 will return to having eight teams with the addition of this year’s division 3 premiers Watsonia. Division 2 had only seven teams this season because Reservoir didn’t have enough players to field sides.

Calder Cannons’ Mitchell Lewis may have been the second last player picked in the AFL national draft on Friday night, but his name is one many football supporters will remember for years to come. Lewis was taken at pick 76 by Hawthorn, with only Jake Waterman, who joins West Coast, selected after him. A key forward from Whittlesea who can also play ruck, Lewis is a bit of an unknown in football circles but many saw the irony of his selection on Friday – the Hawks traded two of their stars, Sam Mitchell and Jordan Lewis, in the off season. The coincidences didn’t end there – Mitchell Lewis wears guernsey No.53 at the Cannons. At the Hawks, Mitchell and Lewis wore numbers five and three respectively. Mitchell Lewis is the first player to be drafted from Whittlesea. He played nine games with the Cannons last season and a further 10 games this year. His stand-out game this year came against Gippsland Power. He kicked four goals and had 13 marks in a best-on-ground performance. It was a quiet draft for the Cannons, with Lewis the only current player drafted. Former Cannon Luke Ryan was drafted by Fremantle, while former Woodend and Gisborne player Mitch Hannan was picked by Melbourne. Cannons late developers Ben Ronke and Zach Guthrie are expected to be in the mix for rookie spots. The rookie draft was due to be held on Monday. For the latest from the rookie draft, head to www.starweekly.com.au.

SPORT Whittlesea’s winning start sharpens finals desire Whittlesea’s season couldn’t have got off to a better start in Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1 section 2. Having been knocked out in the first week of the finals last season, Whittlesea has so far this season nailed six wins and a wash-out draw. Whittlesea coach Nick McIntyre, who played division 1 finals last season for the first time, said getting off to a good start was vital to their chances. On Saturday, Whittlesea defeated Hurstbridge 90 (16) - 71 (2). It now sits second on the ladder, five shots behind Bundoora RSL. “We’re off to a good start,” McIntyre said. “This season we want to win a final.” So far this season Whittlesea has already accounted for Bundoora RSL, the side that eliminated it from last season’s finals. “We beat them by one shot,” McIntyre said. “They’ll definitely be one of the teams to beat, along with Lilydale and MCC Kew Sports.”

McIntyre said Whittlesea had retained the majority of players from the past season, with the addition of new players such as Mark Phillips and John Tennant, while David and Billy Boulton have returned to the club. McIntyre said the club as a whole was performing strongly, with the second side playing in division 2 this season after winning promotion. Whittlesea has also set up a junior academy and scholarship program. “The Whittlesea Wizards is a junior academy to get kids involved,” McIntyre said. “It’s a good initiative from the club.” Kyle Williams, one of about 14 kids involved in the juniors, had shown a lot of enthusiasm for the game and the club provided him a scholarship to help with his bowls and schooling. The club’s good start to the year has also been reflected on the state stage, with McIntyre and

Whittlesea teammate Luke Eddington part of the winning men’s triples team at the Victorian Open. Bundoora RSL’s Graham Guy was the other member of the team. “I had a good week,” said McIntyre, who also made the semi-finals of the open’s singles. In other pennant results, Bundoora RSL defeated Altona 83 (16) - 57 (2) in premier division. RSL is second on the ladder, 20 points behind runaway leader Mentone. Tara Murray

Luke Eddington was part of the victorious triples combination at the Victorian Open. (Damian Visentini)

Kangaroos bounce back By Tara Murray Greenvale Kangaroos overcame another heartbreaking loss to record a third win of their Victorian Premier Cricket season. Coming off their worst performance so far, the Kangaroos had two chances to make amends, in T20 matches against Footscray Edgewater and Monash Tigers. On Saturday, it came down to the final over against Footscray Edgewater. The Bulldogs had held fast to be 4-134, climbing from 4-52. Needing nine off the final over, it came down to the last ball of the day – the Kangaroos needed two for a win and one for a tie. Disappointingly, Aaron Smillie was caught in his quest for those winning runs, leaving the Kangaroos at 9-133, with Sunam Gautam making 55 and Nathan Massey 31. It was the third time this season the Kangaroos have lost by one run. The Kangaroos’ second side also lost to the Bulldogs by one run on Saturday. Coach Stan Nell said as disappointing as the loss was after another close match, there were some positives. “We will learn from these losses,” he said. “Sometimes, when you’re developing a side, you have to lose matches like these and see how it feels.” The Kangaroos didn’t have time to dwell on disappointment, facing the Tigers on Sunday, and Nell wasn’t disappointed by his side. Batting first, the Kangaroos made 7-114, with Massey and Gautam again the top-scorers – Massey made 44, Gautam finished 28 not out. The loss of early wickets hurt the Tigers, who were in trouble at 3-11. Kangaroos’ bowlers kept up the pressure and bowled the Tigers out for 81 with one over remaining. Kyle Adams was the pick of the bowlers taking 5-10. Nell said the leaders really showed the way. “It was a fantastic performance from the whole group, They were so disappointed with the loss [the precious] night and everyone made the commitment to get back up. “Jarrod Leggett has been fantastic and keeps getting the playing group back up. I’ve been lurking in the background.” The win is the Kangaroos third of the season, two more than the whole of last season. “We have won a two-day, a one-day and a T20 match,” Nell said. “That’s the first T20 game we’ve won in about three years, it’s a good turn-around. It’s really good to see.” The Kangaroos have another double-header this weekend, facing Fitzroy Doncaster and Melbourne in one-day matches.

Positive Jaguars have their eye on the future Jacana is enduring a slow start to the season in Cricket Victoria’s Women’s Community Cricket north-west competition but the players remain upbeat. The Jaguars have been hurt by rain affected games, as is the case with many sides. They started the season with a bye, one of their games didn’t get under way and a second was called off before a result was decided. Jaguars player and club secretary Jodie Shanks said the aim this season was to finish higher than last season. “We’ve haven’t really got many games under our belts yet, but we’re hoping to get better as the season goes on and make finals,” she said. “We had a really fun game against Craigieburn which we lost by two runs … against Plenty Valley they had nine players who have played district cricket, as we discovered after the game. “The side had never played a team that scored

like that before. We were happy with how we played.” On Saturday, Jacana won against EMP/ Williamstown Congs by forfeit. The Jaguars have a similar line-up to last season, when several past players returned to the side. Shanks said they have a pool of 16 to 17 players to choose from each week. Ideally they would like to form a second team next season. The club also has a big focus on trying to establish a junior program. This season it has no junior sides, but is hopeful of having some, including a girls’ side, next year. The first step is running a Milo in2Cricket program this season for children aged between five and eight. The program started last week, with discounted, subsidised fees available for Hume families.

“We need to start from the ground up,” Shanks said. “We don’t have any junior sides, but it is a big focus. Milo is something we can build on next year.” In other results, Craigieburn easily accounted for Melbourne University. Melbourne University scored 4-119 off its overs, with Craigieburn making the winning runs with eight wickets and 15 overs to spare. Bulldog fan’s dreams come true By Tara Murray Northern Knights’ Patrick Lipinski experienced the best day of his life earlier this year. As a diehard Western Bulldogs supporter, he was in heaven as the Bulldogs broke their 62-year VFL/AFL premiership drought in October. Yet he only had to wait a month or so to have that feeling of elation trumped in a most fitting fashion. The Bulldogs used their second pick, number 28, in the AFL national draft on Friday night to bring the 18-year-old to the club. “I wasn’t expecting to be taken at pick 28 – I thought I might have been picked up later on,” Lipinski said. “It [the premiership] was the best moment of my life. I’ve been a supporter since I was three and been so passionate and was at the ground on grand final day. “It’s now the second best moment in my life.” The Bulldogs were one of 10 clubs that had spoken to Lipinski at the AFL national combine in October. “It’s been ridiculous,” he said. “If someone said to me I’d be drafted, I wouldn’t have believed them. “I’ve put in a lot of hard work and sacrificed a lot.” It’s been a whirlwind 12 months for Lipinski, who played only two games for the Knights after being added to the squad midway through last season. He gave up basketball and decided to focus on football, making the Knights’ squad for this season. The decision of the Knights’ coaches to move him from the forward line to midfield this season proved to be vital. He played the first six games of the season in the forward line, kicking at least a goal in each game. “The change to the midfield made recruiters take notice of me and sparked interest,” he said. “I played three games there before hurting my hand, which was annoying. “I was lucky to get back and play another three games.” Lipinski becomes the second Eltham junior player to be recruited by the Bulldogs in recent years, following in the footsteps of Marcus Bontempelli. Lipinski said he had received several welcoming texts from officials and players. The AFL rookie draft was held on Monday afternoon after deadline. Matthew Signorello has been drafted by Adelaide. (Shawn Smits)

Selection proves Signorello’s point Northern Knights’ Matthew Signorello had a bit of a point to prove when he missed selection for the Vic Metro under-18 national carnival. After starring for Northern Knights and his school, Ivanhoe Grammar, Signorello impressed AFL recruiters and was selected to test at the state combine. But a shoulder injury prevented the test. However, Adelaide had seen enough to make a choice and, on Friday, selected him at pick 62. Signorello was the second and last Knights player selected; Patrick Lipinski was pick 28, taken up by the Western Bulldogs. Signorello becomes the first Knights player drafted to the Crows since 2001. Before the draft, he said this season had been his best year of football so far. Knights’ talent manager Rhy Gieschen said Signorello would revel at Adelaide Oval. “He takes absolutely everything in his stride, and this won’t be any different,” he said. “He is a sensational athlete with outstanding courage, and his mix of speed and endurance will suit the expanses of Adelaide Oval perfectly. “He is a really popular member of our program and no doubt he will fit in really well at an interstate club, and they will embrace him extremely well.” Tara Murray

eriously, I’d try to find the extra $6000 for the Q30 Sport. With an additional 40 kilowatts the turbocharged two-litre is quicker off the line and better around the bends. But what I liked most was the very comfortable sports seating, much nicer headlining and the Alcantara upholstery extending to the dash. You also get seat heaters, lane departure warning and lots of bits and pieces, including better-looking wheels with run-flat tyres. The Q30 is good looking and feels nicely solid. The interior is very well sorted with easy navigation, well-placed controls and clear, logical instrumentation. Fit and finish is first-class. The cargo area is good and while rear seating is ideally for kids, two adults can ride there in reasonable comfort. So we get to the downers. There’s no spare wheel, you get a tyre repair kit and, despite the big screen, there’s no reversing camera until you get to the sports premium model at $57,000. How silly is that?

aybe you’ve never heard of Infiniti. It’s been working the periphery of the luxury car market since 2012, after an unsuccessful first stab in 1989. But now, with the Q30, it has a genuine contender for serious sales volumes. The car is well-equipped, very well made and the price is definitely right. The Q30 owes its being to Mercedes-Benz. The underpinnings and the engines are of Mercedes GLA origin, but while GLAs start at $48,000 and go to $94,000, the Infiniti starts at $43,000 and peaks at $60,000. The 1.6-litre GT is also five grand less than Audi’s 1.4-litre Q3. Go for the GT, the cheapest model. The GT’s ride is brilliant and its turbocharged 1.6 has good acceleration and overtaking power. Given the specification – standard equipment includes navigation with traffic updates, rain-sensing wipers, rear parking sensors, keyless entry, cruise control, emergency braking – the GT is a bargain.

A Mercedes in all but name.
