Sweet eats make a feast Pacific Epping will be transformed into a sweet tooth’s haven during the Festival of Foodies this weekend. The shopping centre will be taken over by sweet delights, coming together for a market that will feature some of Melbourne’s favourite dessert trucks, including The Brulee Cart, The Bearded Bakers, Dr Donut and Rue De Creperie. There will be cooking demonstrations, wine and cheese pairings, live music and family food activities, such as tomato crushing and pasta play. Former My Kitchen Rules contestants Helena and Vikki Moursellas will headline Saturday’s cooking demonstrations, sharing their favourite family recipes. Centre manager Simon Brown said the festival would transform the centre into a hub of food and foodies. “The Festival of Foodies brings good food, good music and good fun to the centre,” he said. Super suburb for Wollert By Laura Michell Whittlesea just keeps on growing. The state government has unveiled plans for an extra 15,000 houses at Wollert, paving the way for another 42,000 people in the area. Planning Minister Richard Wynne last week said he had approved a 1434-hectare suburb as part of the government’s plan to release 100,000 residential lots by the end of 2018 in a bid to make Melbourne housing more affordable. The new suburb will be bounded by Craigieburn Road to the east, Summerhill Road to the north, Curly Sedge Creek to the west and the future E6 road reservation.
The government has pledged new roads for the area, while existing roads, including Craigieburn, Boundary and Summerhill roads and Koukoura Drive, will be upgraded. But, there was no word when these road duplications would take place. Mr Wynne hailed the latest suburb as “a model new suburb”, saying it would be serviced by a network of bus routes and was just a 10-minute drive from Epping or Craigieburn train stations. But the plan has been criticised by residents who fear the new housing will only add to the area’s existing traffic congestion woes. Aurora Community Association president
Sanjeev Choudhary questioned why the government was adding more houses to an area already struggling with inadequate infrastructure. “Currently, the situation in Epping is already absolutely stressful for people living in the area. The traffic is causing havoc,” he said. “The buses are inadequate and we have been told the rail line to Wollert is 25-30 years away. “How do they justify the planning of more houses?” Mr Choudhary said the government should be duplicating roads and investing in schools and sporting facilities for the area before building more houses.
But Mr Wynne said the new precinct had been meticulously planned and would include town centres, five schools and extensive walking and cycling paths. He said more than $400 million in developers’ contributions would cover essential infrastructure and community facilities, such as roads, parks and pipelines. “It’s all about promoting affordable housing and giving new communities the world-class services and infrastructure they deserve,” the minister said. “Approvals like these don’t just help cater for [the] growing population, they keep the dreams of many would-be homeowners alive.”

Pupils outnumber school places By Laura Michell Melbourne’s outer north is facing an “alarming” shortage of secondary schools, education experts are warning. An analysis of primary and high school enrolments across Melbourne by independent career and school consultancy firm Good Education Group found insufficient high schools in the north to cope with ballooning numbers of primary students in the region. It found that the 3064 postcode, which covers
Craigieburn, Mickleham and Roxburgh Park, has four secondary schools currently catering for 3688 students. But there are 7988 students enrolled in the area’s 13 primary schools. The group’s head of data and analytics, Ross White, said the data meant that, over the next decade, the burden on secondary schools in the area will increase by 115 per cent as those 7988 students make their way to high school. He said figures were similar across the northern suburbs, where 73,000 students will
need to squeeze into 61 secondary schools that currently educate 45,000 students. Mr White said the data shows a need for more secondary schools in the outer north, adding that the opening of more Catholic and independent schools could help ease the burden on the state government. “There aren’t very many independent schools in the Craigieburn area, but our research shows that 25 per cent of students who start their school life at a government school will finish at a non-government school,” he said.
“The data is a call to action for mums and dads to think about what’s available for their children.” Education and training department spokesman Alex Munro said the state government had spent about $30 million on school infrastructure in Hume over the past two budgets. “Our school infrastructure spending is prioritising communities that need it most … booming suburbs like Craigieburn, Mickleham and Roxburgh Park,” he said.

Lights go on for north’s SES action The Whittlesea and Craigieburn SES units will no longer need to rely on surrounding SES groups for lights, thanks to a $39,000 grant from the state government. The money is part of the government’s $15 million Emergency Services Volunteer Sustainability Grants program. Yan Yean MP Danielle Green and Yuroke MP Ros Spence announced last week that the
units would share the grant, allowing them to buy a lighting platform. Whittlesea SES unit controller Gary Doorbar said the lighting platform was essential. “We had to borrow one from Broadmeadows SES earlier this month to light up the scene at a fire in Thomastown,” he said. “Now, we will have our own platform for lighting up crime scenes and fire grounds.”
Ms Spence said the grant would assist volunteers with their crucial work. “The Emergency Services Volunteer Sustainability Grants program has been established to help units like Craigieburn and Whittlesea SES so they can continue … protecting Victorian properties and lives.” Laura Michell
Peak hour punctuality on the Craigieburn line has fallen, with more than 10 per cent of trains running late in January. Latest performance data from Public Transport Victoria reveals that just 88.4 per cent of the lines peak services were on time last month, down from 91 per cent in January 2016. Across the network, 91.8 per cent of peak services ran on time. Overall punctuality on the northern line also fell, with only 90.9 per cent of trains coming in on time. In January last year, 91.8 per cent of services ran to the timetable. Metro spokesman Marcus Williams said the Craigieburn line has been impacted by vandalism, trespassers, police incidents and sick passengers throughout January. “The biggest impact on punctuality was early on January 20, when Melbourne experienced flooding and the heaviest rainfall in six months,” he said. The nearby South Morang line fared better, and is Melbourne’s second most punctual route behind the Glen Waverley line. Mr Williams said South Morang commuters had also faced a few delays during January. He said Metro would work with PTV and the state government to ensure more punctual services. “Longer term government investment in the Melbourne Metro Tunnel will open up capacity in the City Loop to improve Craigieburn services, and the Mernda rail extension and Hurstbridge rail line upgrade will both provide benefits to passengers on the South Morang line,” Mr Williams said. Charities bring it home Charities working in Whittlesea have had a helping hand from year 12 students at St Monica’s College. The Epping school hosted 10 charities, including Foodbank, Red Cross and Caritas last Friday, as part of its annual Formation Day. The students met with representatives from the charities to better understand the day-to-day work they do, before rolling up their own sleeves to help pack hospital and food parcels, and sew trauma teddies.
Principal Brian Hanley said the day taught students about practising social justice. “The college has a very strong social justice program and this event will help students understand the needs of charities operating in their own communities,” he said. “By involving them in hands-on activities with the charities, it will bring home to them the needs of the people each charity assists.” Laura Michell

Feds slammed over high risk centre By Laura Michell Hume council, residents and refugee advocates have slammed a federal government plan to reclassify a Broadmeadows immigration detention centre into a high-risk security facility. Immigration and Border Protection has proposed a $29 million upgrade of the Melbourne Immigration Transit Accommodation (MITA) centre on former Defence land on Camp Road. If approved, the upgrade will turn the centre
into one of only three high-risk detention centres in Australia, proposing 140 beds in two high security compounds. The department says the existing centre needs to be upgraded because of a “recent trend towards a higher risk detention population”. The department’s application to the Parliamentary Standing Committee for Public Works suggested Hume council was in support of its plan for the detention centre. However, a council submission to the same committee was scathing of what it claimed was a “complete lack of consultation” by the
department. Hume’s submission, authorised by mayor Drew Jessop, said the council has long held the view that a detention centre should not have been built there in the first place, in an industrial precinct only 450 metres from houses. The council asked how the site would be managed to ensure people are protected. Broadmeadows resident Phillip Di Biase said the suburb was “not a good place” for a detention centre for high risk detainees. “The overall community feeling is that we do not want a detention centre filled with very
bad individuals literally in our backyard,”he said.“It is an affront to the honest, hardworking people of Broadmeadows to have a dumping yard put in their city.” There have been 23 submissions lodged about the upgrade. Federal Calwell MP Maria Vamvakinou and state Broadmeadows MP Frank McGuire made submissions on behalf of the community, saying people are angry, as the proposed upgrade is the federal government’s only local investment. Ms Vamvakinou said people would prefer investment in much-needed jobs.
Devil is in the details It’s official – Thomastown produces one of Australia’s best cheeses. That’s Amore Cheese had its Diavoletti delicacy crowned champion flavoured cheese at the recent Australian Grand Dairy awards. The cheese was one of three shortlisted for the award, and it is the second time this particular cheese has been given a gong. The awards are the dairy industry’s most prestigious and were established to recognise excellence and quality in production. To enter the awards, producers must have won a gold medal at state level competitions. That’s Amore Cheese owner Giorgio Linguanti said the Diavoletti was a “very unique and special product”. He said the name translated to ‘little devils’, adding that it was a small, provolina-shaped smoked cheese that includes a single chilli stuffed into the centre of a pitted olive. “We are over the moon that our dedication
in producing the very best quality product has been recognised again,” he said. Mr Linguanti started That’s Amore Cheese in 2008 – four years after arriving in Melbourne – and he opened his Thomastown factory just last year. Laura Michell

Healthy sports club bans beer By Laura Michell Enjoying a beer and hot chips while watching the soccer is a thing of the past for supporters of one Whittlesea club, with its committee banning junk food and alcohol from the home ground. Sporting Whittlesea made the decision last month to become an alcohol and junk food-free zone after hiring a nutritionist and yoga teacher to improve the health and wellbeing of its players. President Paul DiBlasi said it was an easy

decision for the club, and had the backing of coaches and parents. The change has resulted in the introduction of a healthy canteen at the club’s RGC Reserve home base.
“Good coffee” will be offered as an alternative to alcohol. “Our head coach [Tomas Kovar} was a barista many moons ago, so he is very passionate about good coffee,” Mr DiBlasi said. “When our new facilities open in May, we will be able to have kids in the kitchen learning how to make meals.” To help players and their families embrace the change, the club will also run nutrition workshops for parents. Mr DiBlasi said these sessions will discuss children’s diets and advise on what they should be eating before matches.
“We are becoming more involved in the nutrition and wellbeing of the players,” he said. “Our primary aim [is] being able to help young people grow and develop to their fullest potential in a safe and enjoyable environment. “We are hoping it will be a long-term change.” Mr DiBlasi said the ban was already influencing families, with one dad reporting that soft drink had been banished from his fridge and replaced with water and coconut water. He hopes other clubs will take notice of what Sporting Whittlesea is doing, and follow suit.

Attention all foodies – get your smartphones out and start sharing photographs of your favourite places to eat around Hume. The council wants locals and visitors to “share” their favourite restaurants and cafes as part of its Discover Hume Instagram competition. The aim is to encourage locals to discover their city’s hidden gems and show their pride in their favourite places in the municipality. Mayor Drew Jessop said it is also an opportunity to showcase the best food Hume has to offer. “We are fortunate to have so many eclectic cafes and restaurants, with a wide variety of cuisines at our fingertips,” he said. “From the too-beautiful-to-eat brunches at cafes in Sunbury, through to authentic Middle Eastern cuisine – we’ve got it all in Hume”. Participants have a chance to win a weekend getaway in Hume, valued at more than $850.

SPORT Greenvale Kangaroos seize the moment with top win

Greenvale Kangaroos have stormed into the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s senior division top two. With the teams above them, Spotswood and Yarraville Club, going head-to-head, the Kangaroos knew this was their chance to pounce. The Kangaroos put in one of their best all-round performances of the season to claim an outright victory against Airport West St Christophers. Needing 172 for first-innings points, the Kangaroos resumed at 1-82. The Kangaroos reached 7-201 before declaring with a 30-run first-innings lead and a chance at claiming an outright. The Kangaroos bowled Airport West St Christophers for 99 in its second innings, leaving them needing 70 runs for the outright
victory off 23 overs. The Kangaroos did it with ease, finishing with 2-70 off 13.5 overs. The win handed the Kangaroos 16.71 points, enough to see them jump above Yarraville Club, which lost to Spotswood. Tullamarine lost to Doutta Stars. The Demons made 136 in their innings, which was no match for the Stars, who piled on 324. The Demons made 3-142 in their second innings. The final round of the north-west A1 division will be one to watch, with finals spots still on the line. Craigieburn and Westmeadows all but sealed their top four spots and boosted their top two hopes with victories on Saturday. The Eagles bowlers bowled Werribee Centrals out for 109, 33 runs short of the Eagles’ 132. Sikander Sharma and Michael Bury took four wickets each. In their second innings, the Eagles finished 9-126.
The Warriors moved back into the top two with victory against Williamstown CYMS. Resuming at 2-86 and chasing 116, the Warriors made 8-196 declared. The Warriors sent CY’s back in to try for an outright, but it wasn’t to be, with the CY’s finishing 5-214. With second-placed St Francis de Sales losing to Pascoe Vale Hadfield, the Warriors moved back into second. The Warriors are 0.98 of a point behind ladder leader Craigieburn, with St Francis de Sales just over six points behind the Warriors, with Pascoe Vale Hadfield a further point and half back. The Warriors face Pascoe Vale Hadfield in the final round, while Craigieburn faces fifth placed Glenroy which can still make finals. Tara Murray

Greenvale Kangaroos had a day to forget in their Victorian Premier Cricket match against Ringwood on Saturday. Having already conceded first-innings points on day one, the Kangaroos were looking to avoid an outright defeat. Resuming at 0-11, they trailed by 48 runs. They made it to 0-23 before losing 10-19 to be all out for 42. Six batsmen failed to trouble the scorers.
VSDCA
Rain played havoc with Plenty Valley’s match against Preston north-west competition. Only 67 of the 80 overs could be bowled on day one, with Preston making 5-143. Bats playing coach Matthew Hewat was the best of the bowlers, taking 2-18.
DVCA
Old Paradians/St Francis have moved into the Diamond Valley Cricket Association’s Barclay Shield top four with an outright win against Research Eltham Collegians. Having claimed first-innings points on day one, the Wolves batted on before declaring at 9-155. Collegians made 140 in their second innings, giving them a 91-run lead. The Wolves made the runs with ease, finishing 2-93. The Wolves are third going into the final round. In a remarkable round, there were two ties. Bundoora and Macleod were locked at 103 apiece, while North Eltham Wanderers and Riverside were both bowled out for 131.
Thomas Barforosh, left, celebrates the equaliser that saved the Ranges’ day. (Damian Visentini)
Bowls
Ranges sub saves day By Tara Murray A last minute equaliser from Thomas Barforosh let Whittlesea Ranges off with a point in its National Premier League 2 west match against Brunswick City. Coming off a loss to Ballarat City, the Ranges trailed early after Adam Wright converted a penalty for City in the fifth minute. Then, in a repeat of the week before, the Ranges found themselves forced to finish the match with 10 men after Anthony Cassar was sent from the field in the 22nd, a straight red card exit for a dangerous tackle. That left Ranges’ coach Vinko Bulijubasic
reshuffling the line-up as they went into half-time 1-0 down. And 1-0 it stayed until the dying minutes of the game, when substitute Barforosh found the back of the net in the 90th minute. Barforosh’s goal was the Ranges’ first of the season, and Bulijubasic was just happy for the draw, under the circumstances. “We’re lucky we’ve got such a good defensive set up,” he said. “We were fortunate to get the goal, but we kept on chasing that goal, and didn’t sit back and give up.” While Bulijubasic was happy with a defence that has conceded just two goals in three games – bettering the competition average – it’s at the
attacking end the side still needs to find form. “They just need to gel things together,” Bulijubasic said. “We’re creating chances in front of goal, but we’re not scoring.” Having a different starting line-up in each of its three games so far has not helped the Ranges’ cause. With Cassar’s red card and automatic suspension, the starting line-up will change for a fourth time. Bulijubasic said while this was unsettling, he hopes to steady the side once everyone is back on field. The Ranges sit second bottom after three rounds, with two points. In NPL, Hume City had a comprehensive 5-0 against St Albans.
Bundoora RSL has dropped a spot in Bowls Victoria Pennant premier division. In a battle between third and fourth, it was the lower-placed Altona that snuck home in a thriller. The teams split the rinks, with Altona winning 84 (4)-80 (4). The win means Altona goes above RSL. In division 1 section 2, RSL (2) defeated Diamond Creek 75 (16)-73 (2), while Whittlesea accounted for Hurstbridge 117 (16)-57 (2). In division 2 section 2, Craigieburn and Broadmeadows had mixed fortunes, with the former getting a win. Coach bows out as Roxburgh Park looks to the future Roxburgh Park will turn its attention to pre-season preparations after a couple of tough weeks off the field. The club announced last Tuesday that Travis McCarty will coach the senior side in Essendon District Football League division 2, replacing Paul Derrick. Magpies’ president Jason Bolitho said Derrick had decided to step down after three years at the helm. “He’s been fantastic and had overwhelming support from the club,” he said. “He decided to step down, saying it was what was best for the club … we tried to talk him around. “He said he wasn’t in it 100 per cent and felt he didn’t have 100 per cent passion. “Paul’s always had the best interests of the
club at heart,” Bolitho said, adding the club would always be indebted to Derrick for his role during three years as senior coach. In that time, the Magpies senior team made two grand finals and a preliminary final. “He brought unity and stability to the club,” Bolitho said. “He brought the club a long way.” “He never played favourites, and that’s what we like to be about. “Last year, we had three sides make the grand final. He didn’t coach a premiership, but he has to take some of the credit for what was achieved.” With only six weeks until the start of the season, the club wasted no time in appointing McCarty. He was due to meet the playing group last Wednesday.
McCarty coached Kilmore in both the Riddell District and Northern football leagues. He was originally going to be an assistant coach at Thomastown this year. Bolitho said, with the coaching situation sorted, the club wants to focus on pre-season and get ready for round one. The club has lost at least two key players from last year’s squad. Luke Capuano, who led the league’s division 2 goalkicking, made the move to Glenroy late last year, wanting to test his skills at the next level. More recently, 2016 club best and fairest winner Brad Dimech has put in a clearance to go to division 1 side Westmeadows. “Brad has been talking about moving to the
higher grade the last couple of years,” Bolitho said. “With [former coach] Paul [Derrick] moving on, he thought it was the right time. He’s gone with our blessing.” Bolitho said the focus of bringing through players from the side’s under-19 side would remain. “We’ve got some really good depth and talent in the under-19s,” he said. “We don’t have two or three sides in each age group, and may not have a lot of juniors, but we’ve got a fair few really talented ones. “We’ve always been up there, the last six to seven years,” Bolitho said. Up and down for Kookas By Tara Murray Rivergum didn’t have long to revel in its latest Northern Region T20 title, with the side brought back down to earth on Saturday. The Kookas won their third T20 title in seven years on Tuesday night, with a stunning bowling performance skittling high-profile Riverside. With their batsmen, led by veteran Alex Jesensek, doing the job, the Kookas happily added more silverware to the cabinet. The Kookas were still celebrating when they fronted up to Lalor Warriors in the North Metro Cricket Association’s Jika Shield on Saturday. After sealing a top two spot and with one hand on another minor premiership, the three-time reigning premiers were nowhere near their best. And the Warriors were not going to make it easy for them. They need to win to have any chance of playing finals. Kookas’ captain-coach Gary Bell labelled his side’s 104 with the bat as “pretty ordinary”. “We started OK with Matt Kiely and Alex [Jesensek] before we were 3-30,” he said. “Matt Perri and Jarrod Bannister looked like they were getting going and then there was a caught behind down the leg side. It was a great catch. We then had a couple of bad run-outs and it cost us dearly … 104 was not good enough.” The Kookas redeemed themselves with the ball, with the Warriors to resume on 3-40. Bell said if they bowled well on day two, they were in with a chance. “We’re still a big show and we’ve got the wickets of three of their best batsmen,” he said. “We don’t like to lose and aren’t going to hand them victory. If they beat us, they were too good.” Bell said the win in the Northern Region T20 competition was a bonus, as they were pushing to win another Jika Shield. The Kookas bowled Riverside out for 88 in the final last Tuesday. “It’s better than training,” Bell said. “Riverside is a quality side and it’s a great experience for our players to play against them. “The bowlers were pretty smart, bowling full and straight. We attacked the stumps and most of the wickets were bowled.” Daniel Bramich took 3-11, while Scott Morely took 2-17. Jesensek top-scored with 43 not out as the Kookas made 4-89 The T20 competition is contested by teams in the NMCA and Diamond Valley Cricket Association.

Female Pies take flight Roxburgh Park’s female football program is kicking goals, with the growing club keen to attract more players. The coming season will be the third the Magpies have had a youth girls side and the second in which they’ve had a women’s side. Both sides won four games each last year, in the Western Youth Girls Competition and Victorian Women’s Football League’s north-west division. The youth girls will this season play in a stand-alone Essendon District Football League competition, with the EDFL and Western Region Football League having enough teams to run their own competitions. The senior side is also set to play in an EDFL competition, with AFL Victoria handing control of women’s competitions back to local leagues. Magpies youth girls coach and female football co-ordinator Wayne Capuano said the club wanted to continue developing its female program. He said the club was hoping the launch of the AFL women’s competition will inspire more girls and women to get involved. “We want to move forward and have some success with these teams. On average, we’ve had a healthy 25 to 30 players at training each session, with both sides training together.” David Talintyre will again coach the women’s side. Two players from the Magpie’s program, Haylea Cooke and Rainbow Ebert, have been named in the Calder Cannons under-18 squad. Capuano said it’s the first time the club has had players named in the Cannons and is an indicator of how the Magpies’ program is developing. He described Roxburth Park as a great family club. The teams train on Tuesday nights at Lakeside Oval, Roxburgh Park, from 6pm. Details: 0402 359 069 or 0448 816 172 Tara Murray

RON’S VERDICT Smart, sweet and oh so Audi.
e’re so used to customising our electronic devices that personalising a dashboard is a no-brainer … so thumbs up for the instrument options in the A4’s virtual cockpit, showing the way of the future. You can choose to have your sat-nav map display front and centre, flanked by the speedo and other gauges, or vice-versa. A knob and a couple of buttons on the centre console operate the audio and phone on an iPad-like screen. It’s all very snazzy, functional and kind of familiar, so cheers to the Audi TT sports car for paving the way. The Audi’s interior is also sophisticated. The finish is exemplary and the rear seat leg room is the biggest in its class, thanks to an efficient front-wheel-drive layout. On the outside, the design might be status quo, but it is still stylish and appealing. Easy to drive, equally powerful and sweet, it’s not hard to feel right at home here.

C O N S E N S US \ A GROUND-UP REBUILD TAKES THE A4 TO NEW HEIGHTS (iStock)
udi’s designers could not be accused of taking outrageous liberties with the exterior of the latest A4. Their theme seems to have been “status quo”. But beneath the familiar skin is the most extensive makeover in the car’s history, starting with all-new lightweight architecture and suspension systems. Bigger in most dimensions than its predecessor, the A4 is nevertheless about 65 kilograms lighter. Our test car was the mid-range front-wheel-drive 2.0-litre turbo petrol TFSI Sport automatic that can speed to 100km/h in about 7.2 seconds – similar to Mercedes-Benz’s C200 and BMW’s 320i. The Audi is bigger inside than those cars, plus a smidgeon more affordable. But it’s less composed under hard acceleration. You could step up to Audi’s all-wheel-drive grip, but that requires an extra $9000 for the 2.0 Quattro. A wise investment, however, is the optional adaptive comfort damper system that takes the sting out of the firm suspension.
