Craigieburn remembers Anzac Day will be commemorated at Craigieburn’s new war memorial this year. The memorial at Craigieburn’s Anzac Park was consecrated on April 2, the culmination of years of local fundraising. The memorial is the result of years of lobbying by the Craigieburn War Memorial and Remembrance committee to have a permanent monument in town. Until now, Anzac and Remembrance Day services have been held at the Craigieburn SES, which has also served as temporary custodian of the town’s memorial stone since 2008. Committee president Kevin O’Callaghan said the committee had promised to have a memorial built in Craigieburn by 2017. Hume council contributed $50,000 to its construction, the state government $25,000 and Stockland $10,000. The remaining $15,000 came from locals, with many families making donations in honour of loved ones who served in the armed forces. The April 25 service will be conducted by Epping RSL, with which the committee is affiliated. It is on at 10am. A memorial march by Epping RSL on Sunday, April 23, starts at the corner of High and Coulstock streets at 10.30am. An Anzac Day dawn service will be held at Epping RSL, 195 Harvest Home Road, at 6am. Roads, transport wishlist By Laura Michell Funding for road upgrades and better public transport in Whittlesea and Hume’s rapidly growing suburbs have topped council wishlists ahead of the state budget on May 2. The wishlists come as new ABS data reveals that South Morang and CraigieburnMickleham are two of the three fastest growing suburbs in the country, with more than 4000 people moving to them last year. Whittlesea council wants the budget to include money to improve choked roads, especially Epping and Bridge Inn roads. The

council has listed the roads and the O’Herns Road interchange with the Hume Freeway as its highest priorities ahead of the budget. It would also like for Yan Yean, Findon, Childs, and Plenty roads and Craigieburn Road East to be duplicated. The wishlist comes as close to 1000 people have joined a Facebook group calling for the state government to address the “dire state” of Whittlesea’s roads as a matter of urgency. The group – Dire state of infrastructure in Northern suburbs of Melbourne – was created seven weeks ago by a group of residents fed up with traffic congestion in the northern suburbs.

Mernda resident and group administrator Anna Graham said she feared the area was being left behind. “Driving from Mernda to Bundoora can take hours on a bad day because of the sheer number of people trying to get on the ring road at Plenty Road,” she said. “We need the government to act now.” Whittlesea council is also hoping the budget will provide money to acquire the final parcels of land required to extend the rail line to Epping North and Wollert, as well as funding the tram route 86 extension from Bundoora to South Morang station.

Hume council has listed the duplication of Craigieburn, Mickleham and Somerton roads as its highest priorities. Mayor Drew Jessop said it was essential Hume received adequate support from the government to meet the demands of a rapidly growing community. “Council is also in communication with state governments to advocate for other council priorities, including increased parking at Craigieburn and Sunbury train stations to meet increased commuter demand and 22 new schools in the northern corridor over the next two decades,” he said.

North building boom adds value By Laura Michell Hume’s building boom has reached a new high after the combined value of permits issued during 2016 broke previous records. New data from the Victorian Building Authority shows building permits for projects valued at $1.09 billion were issued in Hume last year, up 26 per cent from 2015. According to the VBA, 3872 building permits were issued, up from 3544 in 2015. Hume had the eighth highest value of building permits in

the state, with Melbourne recording the highest value of permits, at $3.8 billion. VBA chief executive Prue Digby said Hume had recorded strong growth in both the number and value of domestic, residential, commercial, retail, industrial, hospital and healthcare permits. Only the public buildings category fell below 2015 levels. “The VBA data shows that overall growth in building permit values in Hume is stronger than in Victoria as a whole, with building use

categories commercial, retail, and hospital and healthcare bucking the state trend,” Ms Digby said. Five major building permits were issued in Hume last year, including a commercial permit for construction of a $72.2 million laboratory, office and plant at Mickleham. In Broadmeadows, a permit for works valued at $36.4 million was granted to extend a pharmaceutical production facility, while in Westmeadows, a permit was issued for an aged care centre valued at $17.5 million.

A warehouse and office building at Somerton, valued at $11 million, and a permit for a $34.3 million commercial building for an architectural firm at Mickleham were also issued. In Whittlesea, the value of building permits fell three per cent to $1.03 billion. There were 3639 permits issued in 2016, down from 3983 in 2015. A permit to build an aged care centre at Epping, valued at $29.5 million, was the municipality’s highest-valued permit.

Elders learn to swim for safety It’s never too late to improve your swimming skills, a group of older Hume residents will testify. Participants aged 65 or more recently completed Life Saving Victoria and Hume council’s Grey Medallion program, which teaches personal survival skills and water safety to reduce the likelihood of drowning. Among those in the six-week program was a large group of Bhutanese people, who

completed the program at Broadmeadows and Craigieburn leisure centres. While the Bhutanese group do not speak English, instructors were able to help them understand the importance of water safety. The program was established by Life Saving Victoria after it was revealed that adults aged 65 and more feature prominently in drowning and near-drowning incidents across Victoria. Hume mayor Drew Jessop said the program

1216121-DJ06-16 10035628-01

is teaching vital lifesaving skills to people who have not grown up as swimmers. “People who swim and know what to do in an emergency can not only save their own life, but save the lives of others,” he said. “Swimming is a vital skill to have. We strongly recommend all children and adults learn and practice this.”

An Irish insulation company is getting behind Victoria’s manufacturing future, opening a $40 million factory at Somerton, with 50 new jobs to go with it. Kingspan opened its O’Herns Road site on April 5 after developing the factory with the help of a $3 million grant from the Melbourne’s North Innovation and Investment Fund. The fund is a joint state and federal government initiative to help the Hume, Whittlesea, Moreland and Darebin economies hit by the closure of Ford’s Broadmeadows plant. It funds companies wanting to invest and create jobs in the northern suburbs. Industry and Employment Minister Wade Noonan said the factory has set new standards in energy efficiency, becoming Australia’s first green-star rated manufacturing facility. It includes a 750 kW solar system in its roof, and industrial-grade, low-energy lighting and heating systems. “This is another great win for local manufacturing, and another global company choosing Melbourne to establish,” Mr Noonan said. Kingspan plans to supply its insulation products to the Australian, New Zealand, Asian and Oceania markets, with 35 per cent of its output due to be exported by 2020. Broadmeadows MP Frank McGuire said the new factory would boost the local economy. “Kingspan’s new Somerton facility is a shot in the arm for local manufacturing. “It will also provide reskilling opportunities for workers affected by the end of local car manufacturing in Melbourne’s north,” he said. Footage helps council’s case By Laura Michell Two people and a business operator have been caught dumping rubbish on vacant land at Craigieburn after Hume council put in remote surveillance at the site. Mayor Drew Jessop said council officers used CCTV footage from the surveillance to prosecute the offenders at Broadmeadows Magistrates Court on April 5. One person pleaded guilty to dumping two

black bags of rubbish, and was fined $500, while another person pleaded guilty to dumping green and general waste, and was fined $600. A company pleaded guilty to dumping rocks at the site. It was fined $2000. “This case should send a very clear message to anyone who thinks they can simply find an empty block to dump rubbish on, and expect the community to deal with it,” Cr Jessop said. “These actions are disrespectful towards our community as, ultimately, illegal dumping

‘‘

’’

costs ratepayers money, and damages the appearance of our city.” Cr Jessop said the council was determined to pursue offenders regardless of how much rubbish they are caught dumping.

“We take all matters of illegal dumping seriously and we attempt to prosecute each offender, regardless of the size of the waste,” he said. “We have the ways and means to investigate dumped rubbish … this includes a network of surveillance cameras at hotspots around Hume where people have dumped rubbish.” Anyone with information about rubbish that has been illegally dumped is asked to call 1300 HUME CLEAN.

Abbie pours a top cuppa For the past five years, South Morang youngster Abbie Thomas has hosted afternoon tea to raise money to help some of Victoria’s sickest babies. Abbie, 11, received lifesaving care at the Royal Children’s Hospital after being born with a hole in her diaphragm. This meant her organs were wrongly positioned, with her stomach and intestines located in her chest cavity, pushing her heart to the right and compressing her left lung. She was flown from Shepparton, where she was born, to the Royal Children’s Hospital, where she underwent surgery at just four days’ old. She stayed in the hospital’s newborn unit for 19 days. Mum Alice said Abbie was passionate about raising money for the hospital because its doctors saved her life. “She hosted her first Cuppa for Kids when she was just six years old. It’s just a really nice event where the kids and their families can come and have something to eat and have some great fun,” she said.

This year’s Cuppa for Kids afternoon tea will be held on Sunday, May 7, at Briar Hill community hall, Mountain View Road, 1-3pm. Entry is free. The event will include an auction of goods and services donated by local businesses, as well as face-painting and balloon creations. Details: abbiescuppa@westnet.com.au Laura Michell

Bookworms challenge on Whittlesea libraries are working on a program to spawn a new generation of bookworms. Yarra Plenty Regional Library (YPRL), which runs the municipality’s libraries, is taking part in 1000 Books Before School – a statewide program aimed to promote early literacy skills and combating adult illiteracy. The program encourages parents to read 1000 books with their children from their births until they start school. YPRL chief executive Di Shaw said reading

for just 10 minutes a day can make a difference to a child’s vocabulary and literacy skills. “The more a child is read to in their pre-school years, the better prepared they are when they start to learn how to read and write,” she said. “We encourage all families to join the program at Yarra Plenty Regional Library and begin their reading journey with their children … and have lots of fun doing it.” Laura Michell

Hume a hotspot for car theft By Laura Michell Hume motorists are urged to keep their cars locked and their keys safe after more than 1000 cars were stolen across the municipality last year. Data from the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council (NMVTRC) shows that Hume is a hotspot for motor vehicle thefts, with 1026 cars stolen in 2016. Craigieburn was revealed as the car-theft capital of Hume, with 255 vehicles taken by thieves.

In Campbellfield, 166 cars were stolen, while 101 were taken from Broadmeadows and 55 from Sunbury. The data has prompted the council and Broadmeadows police to team up with the NMVTRC for Operation Bounce Back. Mayor Drew Jessop urged residents to be more vigilant, saying there is a common misconception that thieves target older model cars without immobilisers. “Statistics show us that, in 2015-16, 29 per cent of vehicles stolen in Hume were manufactured after 2010. These vehicles have been fitted with

‘‘

A garage remote left in a car is … a perfect - Damien Collins opportunity

’’

an Australian-standards approved immobiliser and consequently, cannot be stolen without the thief gaining access to the keys,” he said. “This is a trend that we are seeing right across Australia, and that’s why this year’s Operation Bounce Back focuses on raising awareness of key thefts, and in particular, key theft via house

burglaries,” Cr Jessop said. Broadmeadows police crime prevention officer Damien Collins said most vehicles are stolen from residential streets and driveways. “Thieves are very opportunistic and will target unlocked vehicles for both theft from and theft of motor vehicles,” he said. “A garage remote left in the car is also a perfect opportunity for thieves to gain entry to your house. “Under no circumstances should you leave your vehicles unattended with keys in the car and ignition on.”

All in for hard day’s work The Northern Health Foundation is on a mission to raise $50,000 to help chemotherapy patients. The Epping hospital is hoping its 2017 oncology appeal will raise what’s needed to buy a scalp-cooling machine for use in the day oncology department. The machine combats hair loss brought on by chemotherapy treatments. The appeal was launched with the help of Melbourne Victory players recently during celebrations to mark 10 years of oncology services at Northern Health. Northern Health chief executive Siva Sivarajah said Northern Health’s oncology service had started in 2007 with a team of three nurses. It has since grown to a team of 13 people across two sites, delivering treatments, as well as diagnosing and assessing those affected by cancer.

Mr Sivarajah said the number of patients cared for by the oncology service has grown from 2571 people in 2008 to 6343 people last year. “Cancer is something that we hear about every day and has a profound impact on so many members of our community,” he said. “Northern Health’s dedicated oncology team of doctors, nurses and support staff continues to work across a number of disciplines to improve the lives of patients and their families during their journey.” Laura Michell

Thumbs down on Kalkallo school By Laura Michell Plans for a primary school in the town of Kalkallo have been rejected by Hume council after residents raised concerns about traffic the development might generate. The applicant had proposed developing the school over the next seven years, increasing the number of students from 40 in the first year to 280 in the seventh. It was proposed that it would comprise seven portable classrooms, an administrative office,

toilet facilities, basketball and netball courts, playgrounds, a 40-space carpark and three bus bays. The application drew objections from 28 residents, with the council also receiving a petition signed by 44 people. Several residents fronted a recent council meeting to voice their concerns about the proposal. They said it would create more traffic than the town’s one-lane heritage Malcolm Street bridge could handle, would have a detrimental impact on the environment and

would be located in an area without water, sewerage, shops, community facilities and public transport. Councillors voted to reject the application amid concerns it wasn’t an ideal site for a school. A report to the council raised concerns about approving a primary school for the town before a development plan was created, with officers saying the school could affect how Kalkallo developed. Council sustainable environment and assets department expressed concerns about the

stress the school would place on the heritage bridge. “The one-lane heritage bridge currently has an AM peak volume of 22 vehicles,” the report stated. “It is a one-way bridge and will not be able to accommodate the level of traffic proposed. “The school’s projected traffic will significantly increase the daily volume on all surrounding roads … to a volume that will require road widening and upgrade of these [rural] roads.”

Her nature remembered An eight-hectare conservation reserve in South Morang has been named after a former Whittlesea councillor who died in 2014. Nicola Davis was elected as a north ward councillor in 2012, but died in April 2014 after a short battle with cancer. She was 35 years old. The mother-of-two and community activist was passionate about conservation and bike riding, and had actively campaigned for kindergartens, schools and playgrounds. The conservation reserve in Gordons Road was chosen to be named in honour of Ms Davis because of its significant natural features and its location overlooking the Henderson Creek bike trail. A special ceremony was held at the reserve last Tuesday, where members of the Davis family joined mayor Ricky Kirkham to unveil a plaque. Her daughters, Sienna, 9, and Tabatha, 6, planted a river red gum at the reserve in her memory.

11AM to 6PM

“It’s been three years since Nicola’s passing, and naming this reserve after her is just one way her legacy can continue,” Cr Kirkham said. “Nicola’s name will be synonymous with conservation – something she was passionate about – through this memorial.” The Nicola Davis conservation reserve is protected by a Trust for Nature covenant, which means the site will be conserved as a natural refuge for indigenous flora and fauna. Palm Lake lifestyle puts people first Residents of Palm Lake Resort Truganina may ordinarily luxuriate in a carefree lifestyle, but they are also happy to get their hands dirty as contributors to their community. A few weeks ago, sales manager Zoe Ilich-Paul reports, a 23-strong Palm Lake crew volunteered for Clean Up Australia Day.

“For people who like a bit of action, we have an undercover bowling green, an indoor heated pool and spa for aquarobics … plus a fully equipped gymnasium. We even have a personal trainer on board – free to residents – who can organise personalised training schedules.”

“A wonderful effort was put in by the team, including our caretakers Jo and Troy, and we’re proud of and grateful for their splendid contribution to improving grounds surrounding the village. They wound up collecting more than 50 bags of rubbish, with the morning culminating in a yummy barbecue lunch.”

Other fun activities include arts and craft sessions, virtual golf and games of darts, pool or snooker.

Most of the time at Palm Lake Resort is about the luxury of living affordably in world-class facilities, expressly designed for active, mature-age adults. Zoe says there are many activities to keep residents as active or as kicked-back as they may want.

If quiet time is sought, there’s a library with a big selection of books, CDs and videos to browse, and free access to computers, the internet and a printer. And the luxurious 49-seat cinema serves as social hub and place to take visiting grandkids and other family. The hub of the resort is the Paradise Palms Clubhouse, where one free weekly meal per household is provided. It’s also a place to rekindle romances at candlelit tables, or on the dance floor.

Buying into Palm Lake Resort brings financial peace of mind, too, says Zoe. “Residents pay no entry fees and no stamp duty when they move in. “The low fortnightly site fee covers all council rates, garbage disposal and unlimited use of all facilities. And rental assistance may be available for those who qualify through Centrelink.” The final release is now selling, with some great two and threebedroom designs to choose from. Call anytime to organise a tour. Palm Lake Resort, 7 Taronga Road, Truganina. Inquiries: 1800 686 096 or www.palmlakeresort.com.au

15 NORTHERN STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 18, 2017

FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir goes behind the wheel to discover Uber eats ‌ After spending hours with my friend, the Uber Food Dude, cruising the inner west making deliveries and talking with a cross-section of restaurant folk, one thing is clear ‌ they may not like giving Uber a hefty slice of the price of each meal dispatched but they were all, to one degree or another, enthusiastic about being involved. The reasons? Simple. No need to hire drivers ‌ and keeping faith with regulars. A weekly deposit in their business bank account – my understanding is that, under current arrangements, Uber takes 35 per cent of each meal’s cover price – is guaranteed. And – importantly, going by the feedback I get – promotional value and the exposure via the Uber Eats app. Uber takes the photos that go with every eater entry on the app – and they are very good. Gorgeous, actually! My Uber Eats driver pal had previously regaled me with stories and explanations of how it all works, including the very slick technology that makes it possible. Disappointingly, for the tabloidish story-seeking journo that resides within in me, there has been little by way of outrageous yarns arising from his regular delivery routine. Just eateries preparing food for regular folks. I think everyone understands that such an operation runs on very tight margins – just like the restaurant game itself. But still, something doesn’t quite make sense for me in all this ‌ how is it viable when Uber

takes a hefty slice and the drivers get something like $8 to $12 for each delivery? At Luxsmith in Seddon, we’re told it’s their first night doing Uber – and early in the evening, they’ve already seen more than a dozen orders go out the door. That seems pretty good going to me. The recipient of our Luxsmith delivery, for whom this is also an Uber debut, is happy to see us. There are idiosyncrasies in the ordering habits of inner-west Uber Eats users. One of our deliveries, for instance, finds us taking a burger meal from Mr Burger at Yarraville Gardens to Edgewater – and only a couple of blocks from St Burgs and its fine burgers. Later in the night, my pal makes the journey from Happy Four in Yarraville to a part of Footscray where there are a couple of perfectly fine and very similar Chinese establishments. Go figure! For my friend, doing Uber Eats makes all kinds of sense. The money may not be of the get-rich-quick variety, but a handful of deliveries a night for a couple of nights a week adds up to some handy income. Unlike the Uber passenger service, there are no members of the public with whom to deal – just happy, and hungry, customers. Deliveries are – thanks to the Uber driver app “ping alerts to nearby drivers – almost always very local, rarely more than a few kilometres.

ISSAN THAI STREET FOOD

MR BURGER

He reports that some of the most frequently used inner-west restaurants for Uber deliveries are several that may appear to not be particularly popular – but they come alive when the hungry sofa corps get on their mobiles, especially later at night! In my eats journeys in recent months, I’ve become increasingly familiar with the sight of Uber deliveries lined up, and waiting to be

picked up, at many of the places we have been chowing down. It’s a whole ‘nuther world. Kenny Weir is the founder of Consider the Sauce, the definitive guide to eating in Melbourne’s western suburbs – www.considerthesauce.net

SPORT Whittlesea united with new coach Whittlesea United has had an ideal start to the FFV state league 3 north-west season, with three wins from as many games. With a tough draw to open the season, new United coach Peter Schwellinger was thrilled to have kicked off well. United has scored multiple goals in each appearance, only conceding two goals in total. “I didn’t expect that start, with the three opponents we have faced,” Schwellinger said. “It’s the perfect start. ” While only new at United, Schwellinger, who previously coached against United while at Melton Phoenix, had been approached previously. “I coached against them three or four years ago,” he said of United. “They had approached me before, but I’d already signed at Melton. “This year was different and I was keen to get involved,” Schwellinger said, having parted

ways with his old club midway through last season. Most of last year’s squad, which finished sixth with a 9-9-4 record, have returned, while three players followed Schwellinger across. Jordan Borg, a goalscoring machine at Melton, joined United, along with goalkeeper Chris Vassallo and Beau Chang. Schwellinger said while the squad was larger than normal, this would help later in the season. “Normally, you have about 16 players to pick from, but we have a squad of 20-plus players. “It’s a bit of a luxury, but at the same time, we’re struggling to pick which players will play. “You need a big squad in case there are injuries or yellow cards.” Schwellinger said expectations were high. “I think top-four is achievable, and a top-two finish and promotion is a bonus. The side

narrowly missed out on promotion two years ago on goal difference.” With a bye at Easter, United had the weekend off ahead of matches against Upfield and Brimbank Stallions. The coach had mixed views on whether the bye came at a good time. “It’s not ideal with the start we’ve had, and we wanted to continue on. But on the other hand, it’s ideal for injuries and it’ll do the boys good to recuperate. “We’ve got a couple of good challenges ahead. We play Upfield away, and they finished fourth last season, then have Brimbank Stallions – a very good side.” In other round four matches, Williamstown hosts Epping City and undefeated La Trobe University battles Melbourne University in the battle of the universities. Eagles hold high ground

Jake Bensted practises some of his judo moves. (Damjan Janevski)

Judo Jake’s Tokyo road By Tara Murray With a strong family background in wrestling, it would have been no surprise if Jake Bensted followed his father and uncle into the sport. But a lack of wrestling facilities in his then home town of Geelong forced Bensted to look at other options. He turned his attention to judo, and hasn’t looked back. The 23-year-old has a raft of state and national titles to his name, a Commonwealth Games medal and is hopeful of competiting at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. It hasn’t been an easy road and Bensted has had to make sacrifices for his sport. He started judo when he was six years old, but it wasn’t until he was 13 or 14 that he decided to take it seriously. “I was watching the older judo guys and decided that was what I wanted to do,” Bensted said. “I enjoyed the athletes life and I wasn’t that into school.” Bensted had some success and was winning state events. He joined forces with former

Olympian and then junior national judo coach Dennis Iverson. The partnership proved fruitful – Bensted started winning national titles and a few overseas events. He first represented Australia when he was 15 and won five straight junior national titles. He won his first senior national title in 2012. In 2013, Bensted made the move from Geelong to Epping to board with Iverson, who is the current national judo coach and runs the Ijudo Club in Epping. “I was travelling up and down from Geelong to Melbourne every day,” Bensted said. “It become a bit much. My coach offered for me to move into his spare bedroom. Without his support and others like him it would be impossible.” Bensted qualified for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and was the youngest competitor in the 73-kilogram division. He came home with a bronze medal and even more motivation. “Going into it, I thought anything can happen,” he said. “I was optimistic.”

Bensted won back-to-back Oceania titles in 2015 and 2016, achieving his dream of qualifying for last year’s Olympics. He said it was hard to put into words his Olympic experience. He was knocked out of the competition in the third round. “It was insane,” he said. “I was still one of the youngest ones. “I knew I had no shot for a medal, but I was looking forward to the experience. I lost to the eventual silver medallist. I almost had him. It was one of my best fights of my career even though I lost.” Bensted’s experiences will hold him in good stead ahead of Tokyo Olympics in 2020. But before that he’s aiming for next year’s Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. Because there is no judo competition he’s returning to his family roots and hopes to compete in wrestling. Even though Bensted loves what he’s doing, he admits it’s difficult at times with little media coverage or prize money for judo. “I work as a security guard on night shift. It helps pay for trips overseas.”

Last season, Whittlesea’s aim was to stay in the Northern Football League division 1, having won promotion the previous season. They did that – winning five games to become the first team since 2012 to avoid relegation in the same season it was promoted – and now the Eagles want to stay on track. Eagles’ coach Jim Atkins said it was a great feeling to stay up. “What we are doing seems to be working … we’ve tweaked the game plan a little bit though,” he said. “We want to win a few more games than we did last year. If we can do that, then we’ll reassess. “Last season, we were competitive against every team at times. We weren’t going into games thinking we would lose.” One of the biggest things the Eagles need to improve is their consistency of play across the game. Last season, they lost five games by fewer than 20 points. They started 2017 with a three-point loss to Montmorency, 11.13 (79)-11.10 (76), having had chances to secure victory late in the game. Playing assistant coach Justin Sherman kicked five goals, while Jay Russell was named the Eagles’ best. “We weren’t good for the whole four quarters,” Atkins said. “The last four to five minutes of the game, we didn’t play well. We’ve got to fix it up, and we’ve been working hard on trying to do that. “We keep getting ourselves into these scenarios … the consistency will come.” Most of last season’s side has returned in a good sign for the club. Former skipper Roy Dyson retired at the end of last season, while Luke Deards didn’t return. Coming into the team are Tim Atkins, a former premiership winning ruckman with Greensborough, while Matt Dornauf will play just for the Eagles after being aligned with Essendon’s VFL team last year. The club’s juniors continue to come through as well, with four under-19s players in round one. Atkins, in his second year as coach, said they had more depth this season. The Eagles only played one game over the Easter weekend. Their next match is against Bundoora on April 22. Tara Murray 17 NORTHERN STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 18, 2017

Magpies put challenges behind them for Anzac Day clash

After eight whirlwind weeks, things are settling down at Roxburgh Park, with the focus firmly on the field. The Magpies had a more stressful pre-season than expected after Paul Derrick stood down as coach in mid-February, six weeks out from the Essendon District Football League division 2 season. The club quickly appointed Travis McCarty, but also had to deal with the late departure of key players. Entering the Easter break, the Magpies were 1-1, with a close loss in round one and strong win in round two. McCarty said the start to the season was always going to be a challenge. “It’s probably going to take our club four to six weeks to gel, especially in the seniors,” he said. “We’ve got a new coach and new game style. I’ve already seen glimpses of what we can

do, and hope that we can play our best possible football as early as we can.” As well as a new coach, several new players have joined the side. McCarty said he believed they’d lost about five players from last year’s grand final team, but were able to replace them. “We’ve been able to bring in a good six or seven players,” he said. “Three or four of them haven’t been available this year. We’re hoping to have them available the next couple of games. “The players we’ve brought in will be in the club’s top players. We’re also giving opportunities to players who didn’t get a chance last season. We’ve got 35 to 40 guys who can play seniors. We’ve got depth right through.” Among the signings for the Magpies is playing assistant coach Hayden Farrelly, who came across from Hurstbridge, Jack Elliott, Sean Potter, Anthony Carrio and renowned goalkicker John Baker.

There is also clearance for Lachlan Clement. The Magpies’ next game is April 22 against East Sunbury. It will be a special occasion, with the club marking Anzac Day at the clash. Games will start at 11.45am, with the seniors to play a twilight match, starting at 5pm. The Last Post will be played and the national anthem sung before the start of the seniors’ match. McCarty said the day was important for the club as it looked to honour past and present armed servicemen and women. “To host a day like this is important. We’ll be able to showcase our ground and facilities, and pay tribute to the Anzacs. “It’ll be one of the biggest days of the year for the club.” Tara Murray

Hume keeps Cup hopes alive By Tara Murray Hume City’s love of the FFA Cup continues with the National Premier League side through to the sixth round of the Victorian stage of the competition. Facing Nunawading City on Wednesday night, City scored a 3-0 win at home to move through to the next round. City technical director Dean Hennessey said the side performed strongly against a determined Nunawading City. “We were in control of the match all game,” he said. “It could have been four or even 5-0, but we didn’t convert our chances. “We weren’t satisfied until we had the third goal. We’re delighted – it’s a great competition. “Hume has enjoyed the competition the last two years and we’re looking to go deep for a third year.” Wayne Wallace scored his first goal for the club to open City’s scoring, with Atillia Ofli scoring his third goal of the FFA Cup in the 22nd minute. Theo Markelis scored the sealer in the 77th minute. Jayden Prasad, Dillon Jakupi, Wallace and skipper Nick Hegarty were among the best for City. Round six of the FFA Cup will see City play North Sunshine Eagles. The state league 1 team, which includes former City vice-captain Shane Rexhepi, won through to face City in a thrilling penalty shoot-out against fellow state league 1 side Preston Lions.

Hennessey said that despite playing a lower ranked team, City wouldn’t be taking anything for granted with upsets a common feature of the competition. “We will take the game on the same way as we did against Nunawading and will give them the respect they deserve,” he said. “A few of their boys were at our game on the weekend.” The win is City’s fifth on the trot across the National Premier League and FFA Cup competitions after a slow start to the season. Its most recent NPL win was against then top side Avondale FC. Hennessey said attention had already been turned to the NPL clash against Heidelberg United, which was due to be played on Monday night. City entered the game in fifth and just one win off top spot. Hennessey said improved defence had been a key during the winning streak. “We’re still a work in progress,” he said. “With our last two cup wins it’s five games in a row we’ve won. “Our defence has set up really well and we haven’t conceded any goals. “It’s been a decent run and it’s a massive challenge to back it up from last week when we beat Avondale.” Meanwhile, Whittlesea Ranges was due to face Moreland City on Saturday in NPL 2 west.
