Steady climb in crime Robberies and assaults are on the rise in Whittlesea, forcing up the municipality’s crime rate. Latest crime data from the Crime Statistics Agency (CSA) revealed that in the 12 months to June, overall crime rose by close to 4 per cent in Whittlesea, with 16,095 offences recorded by police. The municipality bucked a statewide trend, which saw crime rates fall. Whittlesea also recorded a 6 per cent increase in family violence incidents, despite a drop in reports in Victoria’s 79 local government areas. Inspector Andrew Falconer said the statistics showed there was work to be done. He attributed some of the increase in the crime rate to police improving their response to family violence, but described the increases in robberies as “unacceptable”. According to CSA, robberies increased by close to 30 per cent, driven by a rise in aggravated robberies. In the 12 months to June, there were 81 aggravated robberies in Whittlesea, up from 62. Inspector Falconer said police had recently created a serious crime taskforce to tackle robberies. The statistics also reveal a 21 per cent increase in assaults, with 1334 offences recorded in the 12 months to June. Family violence-related assaults accounted for more than half of the offences, with 333 incidents of family violence-related serious assaults and 542 family violence-related common assaults recorded. There was also an increase in aggravated burglaries, with 70 incidents reported, up from 56 in the previous

12 months. However, overall burglary offences fell by 10 per cent. Inspector Falconer said he was pleased to see a reduction in burglaries, given that it is the crime that worries local residents the most. “We’re working harder than ever before to put recidivist burglars before the courts,” he said. A community safety forum will be held by police and Whittlesea council on Thursday, October 12, at the Plenty Ranges Arts and Convention Centre, from 7-9pm, to discuss residents concerns about safety.

The forum will cover topics such as family violence, alcohol and drugs, crime prevention and road safety. Inspector Falconer said police know many residents were concerned about what is going on in the area in relation to safety. “We also intend to clarify how we police issues and about some of the methods and programs we use to combat different areas of road policing,” he said. In Hume, overall crime fell 3.2 per cent, driven by a drop in family violence, thefts and aggravated burglaries. Inspector Anthony Brown said the decreases were the result of a boost in police numbers. An extra 21 police officers recently began working in Hume, with another 17 expected before the end of the year.

Developers eye off prime site By Laura Michell A 153-hectare site in Craigieburn has caught the attention of international and local developers. The land at 750 Craigieburn Road East was put up for sale by tender last month, with RPM Real Estate Group seeking expressions of interest from developers. According to the company, the site attracted “significant” interest from established international and local developers, with the tender process now in the second stage.

The site has a net developable area of 97 hectares, which could potentially be developed into 1700 housing lots. The land was identified for residential development by the Melbourne Planning Authority as part of the Northern Quarries Investigation Areas growth corridor plans. RPM head of transactions and advisory, Christian Ranieri said the land has been owned by an Italian family for 25 years, who now wished to sell. “This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to secure the last large-scale site in one of

After years of planning and construction, Hume council’s new $35.5 million leisure centre at Craigieburn Anzac park opened its doors at 5.30am yesterday. The centre features a 50-metre pool, warm water pool for rehabilitation and exercise, a toddler pool, a learn to swim pool, an aqua play zone, spas, sauna, steam room, group fitness studio, gym and a mind, body and soul studio. There are also two water slides 14 metres off the ground - the turbo twist which carries up to two people in a raft over 130 metres, and the viper which is a single-person body slide reaching speeds of up to 50 km/h. Hume mayor Drew Jessop said the community had been eagerly waiting for Splash Aqua Park and Leisure Centre to open. “It is unique in terms of community expectations. I think it is the most eagerly anticipated facility the council has ever created,” he said. “We went to all the major metro leisure centres and got the best ideas and layouts and combines that with a budget of nearly $40 million and started designing our centre. “It has got everything you need in a leisure centre.” Already, close to 2500 people have signed up as members. More than 2000 children have signed up to learn to swim at Splash, with the centre set to run over 400 lessons each week. Centre manager Savva Giannikos said 100 lifeguards would work at the centre during the summer peak, with up to 25 lifeguards on deck at any one time. He hopes the centre will help bring about positive changes in people’s lives by encouraging them to exercise more and making it easier to socialise. “This is the perfect spot to put a facility, not only community-wise but with the [Anzac] park. to create a landmark residential community that could capture home buyers from both the Hume and Whittlesea corridors. “The proposed precinct has excellent amenities including expansive future parkland, Craigieburn railway station on the doorstep, a three-minute drive to Craigieburn Plaza, close proximity to schools and the Hume Highway, providing door-to-door access to the city in 30 minutes,” he said. “Over the next 20 years, the Hume-Whittlesea region is forecast to grow by almost 250,000 residents.”

Have your say on new road Whittlesea residents can have their say on how they would use a road running from Bundoora to Beveridge. The council is looking for community feedback on how residents would use a proposed new major road, known as the E6. The state government has reserved an 11-kilometre section of land that runs north to south through the municipality to be developed into a major road or freeway in the future. The land starts at the Metropolitan Ring Road and extends through Thomastown, Mill Park, Epping, Wollert, Woodstock and Donnybrook to join the Hume Freeway and the future Outer Ring Road at Beveridge. The council has long held the view that the road should be a four-lane arterial road, while some residents are calling for it to be built as a freeway. But earlier this year, councillors agreed to allow new community consultation to influence its position on how the road should be constructed. Mayor Ricky Kirkham said the council wanted to get a better understanding about how residents would use this future road to assist it as it lobbies the state government for road improvements. “We want to get a stronger snapshot from our community about how they would use this road as part of their day-to-day lives,” he said. A 30-year-old Mernda woman has been charged with murder following the death of a man on September 29. Emergency services were called to Ramez Street, Mernda about 5pm after reports of a man suffering stab wounds. He died at the scene. Damon Rudge has been fascinated by the film industry since he was a young boy. The Marymede Catholic College year 11 student became interested in film making in 2006 when he was in prep. His years of experimenting with different film ideas and techniques has finally paid off, with one of his creations selected for the ReelOzInd Australia Indonesia Film Festival in the youth filmmaker category. The film festival provides a platform for Australians and Indonesians to come together and share their stories through short films. Damon’s short film, Afraid of Everything. Did it Anyway, had its world premiere last Wednesday, screening at the Australian Centre

for the Moving Image in Melbourne and Yogyakarta in Indonesia. Damon said the film is about a young girl named Alice who travels to an alternative world, where she is forced to face her fears. “It is very abstract,” he said. “I was inspired by Alice in Wonderland, 2001: A Space Odyssey and Arrival. The film was produced for a school assignment and was entered into the festival by Damon’s media teacher, Jeremy Guzman. Damon said he enjoyed the film making process, viewing it as a creative outlet. He hopes to one day be the next Christopher Nolan or Steven Spielberg. Laura Michell

Two Whittlesea drivers have had their cars impounded as part of Operation Scoreboard. A 21-year-old Lalor man had his BMW impounded for 30 days after being caught driving whilst disqualified. Greensborough Highway Patrol members stopped a 44-year-old Epping man on St Georges Road, Northcote, who was driving without a licence. Both men are expected to be charged on summons.

Fire arrest

An Epping man has been arrested by police following an investigation into a series of fires along the Darebin Creek trail in Epping. Whittlesea detectives have been investigating 19 suspicious fires in the area and witnessed a man lighting a small fire near the creek just after midday on September 28. CFA all fired up to help save lives By Laura Michell

Students take a turn to teach Year 12 students at St Monica’s College are helping to promote social cohesion. The school recently teamed up with Whittlesea and Wyndham councils, the Centre for Multicultural Youth, The Huddle at North Melbourne Football Club and LOTE Marketing to create animation campaigns examining discrimination, social justice and mental wellbeing. Two groups of year 12 VCAL students were asked to script, design and direct two 30-second professional campaigns to be broadcast on social media. The students chose the themes of anxiety and social exclusion. Principal Brian Hanley said the students had worked collaboratively on the campaigns for the past six months with the help of industry mentors. “Tackling social issues is always important and our students work in this area is very well regarded,” he said. “This project uses contemporary methods to make a strong statement. I applaud our staff and students for their work.” Whittlesea mayor Ricky Kirkham said the project was an example of the importance of empowering young people. “It’s fantastic to see students come up with such a powerful and creative response,” he said. Firefighter’s from Craigieburn and Greenvale will now be able to provide life-saving medical assistance in an emergency. The brigades are among 22 CFA brigades to complete the training for emergency medical response program. The co-responder program between CFA and Ambulance Victoria is designed to help protect more Victorian lives by providing life-saving medical assistance. CFA district 14 acting operations manager David Harris said the program saw firefighters and paramedics dispatched at the same to assist in life-threatening medical emergencies. “Firefighters take on many and varied roles. If a firefighter arrives at your door in the event of a life-threatening medical emergency, do not turn them away. Every second counts in emergencies,” he said. “Firefighters will respond with the nearest ambulance to help unconscious patients and patients who are not breathing by providing access to life-saving emergency care. “And the message to residents is: Don’t be surprised if you see a fire truck and an ambulance at a life-threatening medical emergency. By working together, we have a better chance of saving someone’s life.” Ambulance Victoria chief executive Tony Walker said the program was already well-established at the MFB. “In a cardiac arrest, what you do before emergency services arrive can greatly improve the chance of someone’s survival,” he said. “Early CPR provides blood flow to a person’s brain and vital organs, and means they have a better chance of survival when medical help arrives.”

Street name honours alliance By Laura Michell A street in the new Mernda town centre will be named after a group of community advocates who secured the extension of the rail line to South Morang and Mernda. Whittlesea councillors recently voted unanimously to name the future main road on the western side of the Mernda train station “Alliance” after the South Morang and Mernda Rail Alliance (SMMRA). A plaque will also be installed in the town centre naming its members. The SMMRA was formed in 2005 to help campaign for the state government to honour a promise to extend the rail line to South Morang. In 2009 the group took up the fight to continue the line to Mernda. Mayor Ricky Kirkham, who put forward a notice of motion calling for the street to be named after the group, said he could not think of a better way to honour the SMMRA. “I think this will be a fitting way of recognising all [their] work in securing this great infrastructure for our city,” Cr Kirkham said SMMRA spokesman Darren Peters said the group was thrilled by the honour. “Our fight to win the South Morang and Mernda railway extensions deserves to be remembered in local history,” he said. “Not many gave us any chance of winning against our unsupportive local MPs and the state government, but we knew that the Plenty Valley was about to become the fastest growth area in the nation and that we had to fight for the railway or else all of us would be sitting in endless congestion. “For all of time, locals will know that it was not politicians that brought rail to Mernda, but the residents themselves.”

Train line works pick up speed Construction of the Mernda Rail Extension is gathering pace. Latest works on the $600 million project to extend the train line from South Morang to Mernda, with new stations at Marymede, Hawkstowe Parade and Mernda, include the excavation of McDonalds and Plenty road. Bridge beams have been installed at McDonalds Road, where the rail extension will travel under the road. Construction crews have also begun moving 50 beams that are about the length of a swimming pool and weigh up to 100 tonnes into place in Mernda. The beams will be used to support the elevated platform at Mernda station. Site offices have also been established near the sites of the three new stations, while initial work such as tree removal, have also been completed. The eight-kilometre extension is being built by John Holland and is expected to be finished in 2019. Super idea to chase lost funds By Laura Michell Thousands of Whittlesea and Hume residents are missing out on a share of more than $200 million. New Australian Taxation Office (ATO) data reveals that there are more than 6.3 million lost and ATO-held super accounts with a total value of about $18 billion across Australia. But $200.3 million of that is in accounts of people living in Whittlesea and Hume. In Whittlesea, more than $98 million is sitting in lost and unclaimed super accounts, with accounts belonging to people living in

Mill Park and Epping holding the most money. In the 3082 postcode, there are 2926 lost or ATO-held accounts totalling $18.6 million, while in 3076, there are 3243 accounts totalling $15.7 million. In Hume, more than $101 million is waiting to be claimed, with the 3064 postcode accounting for a large portion of the lost and unclaimed accounts. The postcode, which takes in Craigieburn, Roxburgh Park, Mickleham and Kalkallo, has 7014 accounts totalling $31.2 million. Lost super refers to accounts held by super funds where they have lost contact with the

account owner. By law, after a period of time, the lost account and its balance are transferred to the ATO and considered to be unclaimed super which is held by the tax office. ATO assistant commissioner Debbie Rawlings said people often lost contact with their super funds when they changed jobs, moved house or failed to update their details with their super fund. “Over the past four financial years, we’ve reunited 1.68 million accounts worth $8.12 billion with the account owner, and there’s plenty more to be found,” she said. “More people are finding their lost and

unclaimed super through our online services every year.” Ms Rawlings said people can choose to keep multiple accounts, but consolidating their accounts could help them avoid paying multiple sets of fees and charges. She said the easiest way for people to keep track of their super, find lost or unclaimed super, or combine their accounts is by using ATO online services through myGov. “By using myGov to track down your super, the money will be transferred to your preferred fund, generally within three working days,” Ms Rawlings said.

The weight is over A surgeon at Bundoora’s Northpark Hospital is leading the charge in weight-loss surgery. Bariatric surgeon Kiron Bhatia is one of a few doctors in Australia to offer a new weight-loss procedure which is becoming popular in the US. Known as endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG), the procedure involves an endoscope being placed through the mouth of a patient where a series of stitches are then made within the stomach to create a tube shape. This restricts the capacity of the stomach to hold food by up to 70 per cent. Dr Bhatia said the procedure was much quicker than other forms of bariatric surgery. “The procedure is less invasive than many of the most common bariatric surgeries,” he said. Patient Hollie said the surgery helped her find a new lease on life. The 36-year-old mother of two said she battled weight issues for most

of her life and had tried a number of diets over the years. Wanting to take a different approach to her health, Hollie began researching weight-loss surgeries and discovered ESG. “With all the research I did into ESG, I kept coming across the name Dr Kiron Bhatia … to say I was delighted was an understatement,” she said. “I am a dedicated mum, wife and colleague, I look after everyone else and the time had come to start looking after me.” Laura Michell

Outer suburbs need urgent fix By Laura Michell Melbourne’s interface councils are warning that significant pockets of isolation and disadvantage are being created in Melbourne’s outer suburbs, where liveability is falling behind the rest of the state. The Interface Councils group, which comprises the 10 municipalities that form a ring around metropolitan Melbourne, including Wyndham, Melton, Whittlesea and Hume, have released a liveability snapshot outlining the service and infrastructure gaps in the outer suburbs. The region is home to 1.5 million people.

The group says that interface residents are living with significantly less services and infrastructure than people in inner or middle Melbourne, and in some cases, even regional areas. The councils have criticised the state Labor and Liberal parties for failing to address the shortfalls. According to the report, which was released in Parliament recently, the average unemployment rate in the outer suburbs in 6.9 per cent – 1.1 per cent above the state average. Interface areas are also lacking in local job opportunities, with the percentage of jobs available in outer suburbs just 62.5 per cent, compared to the state average of 93.4 per cent.

The report found that interface residents are also facing the longest commutes in the state, with one in five people travelling more than two hours each day for work. Psychological and mortgage stress is also on the increase in the outer suburbs. Interface Councils spokesman Cr Peter Clarke said the snapshot reveals startling figures that the state government should be

deeply concerned by. “The situation has been created by years of solid growth. Last year’s [state] budget saw the largest increase in government spending in the outer suburbs but this follows 16 years of budget drought,” he said. “Gaps in infrastructure and services need more than just sporadic funding support. “There have been two Parliamentary Inquiries and two Victorian Auditor General’s Officer reports in the last nine years highlighting the problem and no party has developed and supported a comprehensive policy to address the infrastructure and service shortfall identified in the reports.”

Never too early to learn A Whittlesea early childhood program helping children get a better start in life has been recognised as among Victoria’s best early years programs. The Brotherhood of St Laurence-run Growing Learners program is a finalist in the Victorian Early Years Awards. The program is nominated in the supporting parents to build their capacity and confidence category. The targeted, early-intervention program is open to vulnerable and disadvantaged parents of children aged up to three who want to strengthen their relationship with their child. It is run in partnership with Goodstart Early Learning, Jindi Kindergarten and Extended Care and Whittlesea council. Yan Yean MP Danielle Green described the program as inspiring.

“Every day families in the northern suburbs benefit not only from the great work being done by the Growing Learners program, but from the tireless dedication of our countless local early childhood services and professionals,” she said. MY PLACE Northern Men’s Shed president Tom Rolls has watched Craigieburn evolve from a small country town to a bustling suburb. What is your connection to Hume? I live in Craigieburn and I am the president of the Northern Men’s Shed. How long have you lived in Craigieburn and what brought you to the area? I have lived in Craigieburn since December 1974, which is a long time. I moved here to be close to my work at Ford. What do you like about living in Hume? It is close enough to the city but far enough out to miss most of the hassles of living in inner Melbourne.

I think Craigieburn has grown too big and lost a lot of the country feel. It has gone from a small country town of a few thousand people, two schools, two kindergartens, a small shopping centre with approximately seven shops, and no police station, to being just part of the metropolitan Melbourne area. As a member of the Craigieburn fire brigade since December 1974 I have made lots of friends. Many have moved to other parts of the state but I still see them. I have made many new friends in our shed, as well as in others we visit.

SPORT Softball’s next big hit By Tara Murray With another softball season about to begin, Northern Softball Association players are raring to go. One of the only association’s in Melbourne’s north, the Mill Park-based association continues to grow, with the season starting on Saturday. President Anthony Bradstreet said this season they would have mixed under-13, 15, 17 and 19 competitions along with an open women’s competition, along with tee-ball for the under-8s which are all played at the one location. Some players have been training over the last few weeks in the lead-up to the season. “I think we’ll have a number of new kids especially in the juniors,” he said. “It’s a good opportunity for them to learn the game but more importantly have fun. “We welcome players throughout the season and will slot them into teams. It’s fun and social and with the sport back in the Olympics we’re hoping to get a bit more focus on the sport. Bradstreet said the key to their association was families. “We’ve got two main junior clubs with multiple teams and in the open grade we have five or six teams between four clubs,” he said. “The youngest player in the open grade is 15 and the oldest is in their 60s. “We have a lot of mothers and kids playing. A lot of mothers get back into it as their kids are playing. It’s our number one source of getting players in the open grade.” The association’s development is being noticed on a wider scale with a number of players being selected for representative sides. Bradstreet said in his time at the association the number had never been this high. “We have more than 10 players from the association in state and state school teams,” he said. “It’s grown quite well. Having the older kids making teams gives the younger players something to aspire to. “We’re hoping that they will grow their skills and it will help get some other kids into the sport. “We’re very privileged that the older rep players are helping coach the junior ranks.” Among those in the state teams are Anthony Serra, Angelina Kichakov, Hannah Scott, Marcus Ferraro, Joseph Serra, Caitlin Laird, Jamie-Lee Mathews, Joshua Opasinov, Logan O’Brien, Ethan Scott and Jordan Baker. Hume City has announced the signing of Joseph Konyit for next season. Konyit has recently returned to Melbourne after spending five years playing in Europe which included stints in Germany, Croatia, Italy and Romania. City coach Nick Hegarty said Konyit will add something they were missing in this year’s season. “We have certain plans that will suit Joey’s game style, but his comfort in midfield and in defence will make him a huge asset for the club,” he said. “He is at an age now where he can step up and help lead a talented group of younger players. This kids desire to achieve is contagious and he will fit in with the club’s culture fantastically.”

Broncos appoint new coach, look to the future

Hume City Broncos didn’t have to look far for a new coach for their Big V women’s state championship side. The club always knew they would be looking for a coach at season’s end with Glen Milner only taking on the role for 12 months. But that 12 months allowed them to find the perfect person for the job. After spending last season as an assistant coach to Milner, Michael Thomas has been appointed to the role. Thomas, who was previously head coach of the Sunbury Jets women’s side, said it was an extraordinary opportunity. He got involved with the Broncos through his connections with former Women’s National Basketball League and Broncos player Sharon Milner, who also happens to be Glen’s daughter. “I had a year off after coaching at Sunbury,” Thomas said. “I went to school with Sharon and we stayed in touch.

“Glen is doing a lot of travelling next year so he didn’t want to continue coaching. They then spoke to me about the head role. “It’s really exciting at a club which has had great success over the last decade. “They’ve won grand finals or played off in most years.” Thomas said as soon as the opportunity to take the role came up, it was too good to turn down. He said he had learnt a lot the past 12 months under the guidance of Milner. He said the depth of players coming through the Broncos program was something that stood out about the club. The Broncos finished sixth this year, after an inconsistent season marred by injury, change of imports and players leaving to play other sports. Thomas said while it was early in the piece, they looked like they would keep their core group of players together.

“The playing group is really exceptional and they taught me a lot,” he said. “The core group has been successful and I think they still have a few more years together as a group.” Thomas said they would look to secure an import, something the Broncos have had good success with previously. He said they would also consider looking at trying to add a Women’s National Basketball League player, if the right opportunity arose. The club has also announced its youth league women’s coach, with Tim Devlin taking on the role. Devlin comes to the Broncos having been an assistant coach with Werribee Devils’ division one women’s side and coaching Corio Bay’s youth league women’s side before that. The Broncos will have open try-out session on October 3 and 5 from 7.30pm at the Broadmeadows Basketball Stadium. Tara Murray

Tulla turns to youth policy after disappointing season Tullamarine is looking to inject some more youth into its side for this year’s Victorian Turf Cricket Association Senior division season. Having thrown everything at a finals tilt last season and falling short, the club decided it would build from within. Tullamarine president Matthew Pixton said this season was about getting back to basics. The Demons finished last season in seventh spot, with less than two points separating fifth to eighth. The Demons had 11 points deducted off them due to an administration error, but would have still missed finals. “It’s been a bit of a rebuild,” he said. “As a committee, we made a decision to make a tilt at finals last season. With the players we had and some new players we thought they

could take us to finals, but it didn’t pan out. “With our two overseas players unavailable this season and a few retirements, we’ve decided to invest in youth. “Our junior numbers are strong and we’ve got a one-day side for the first time. Numbers are good.” The Demons have managed to keep the core group of four or five players together, led by skipper David Zahorodni, and plan to build around that group. Zahorodni takes over as captain following the departure of both of last season’s captains. Adam Carton has retired, and Tom Van Den Berg has returned to Cairns. English import Alex Machen joins the club as a top-order batsman-wicketkeeper,

replacing Matthew Cross who is one of two imports who isn’t returning. Machen had been playing for Ebberston Cricket Club in the Scarborough Beckett Premier League. Pixton said they plan to fill the other spots left vacant with some younger players at the club. “We had two 16-year-olds make their debuts last season and they’re back again,” he said. “Kobe Walters and Zach Zuehlke are both bowlers and we know playing in VTCA senior division isn’t the easiest thing. “They’ll bowl more overs this season and we’ve got some good support behind them. “Dylan Watts is a young batsmen who might be able to come through.”

Calling in the big guns By Tara Murray After nearly three decades of involvement in junior basketball, Cecil Exum was ready to take a step back. That was until he got an offer from Broadmeadows Basketball Association to be their director of coaching for its junior representative program which was too good to refuse. With his son Dante playing with the Utah Jazz in the NBA, Exum senior is spending more time in the US, so coaching came second. Exum said Broadmeadows was willing to work around his travel plans, which made it an easy decision to join the Broncos. “It’s a small basketball community and I’ve got friends at Broadmeadows,” he said. “They approached me and asked if I was interested in running the program. “After 27 years of coaching I was thinking of not continuing but Broadmeadows was really

persuasive. “It’s an opportunity to develop more kids.” Exum comes to Broadmeadows after seven years at Diamond Valley and before that he spent five years at Keilor and 15 years at Werribee. Exum, who played college basketball with Michael Jordan and was drafted to the NBA before coming to Australia to play in the NBL, has a reputation for developing junior programs. With the Broncos, his aim is to have a side in every age group in Victorian Junior Basketball League’s top division. This year three Broncos teams were in the top grade. “I’d like to improve that in my stint,” he said. “I’ll look at more coaching and more development to get the skills up. “The way the VJBL runs there’s two grading phases, one before Christmas and phase two after the Australia Day weekend. “We’ll be trying to get early wins so we can be graded as high as possible.” Exum said he plans to call on contacts to get involved and help to establish the program. He said the process would take two to three years to get it to the level he wants. “It’s about getting the right coaches with the right teams,” he said. “Part of my role is having a look at the domestic program which is the foundation for the rep program. “I’ll be looking at increasing numbers and working on skills and making sure we’re offering clinics and pathways. Hopefully I can get others on board to get the program where I want it.” Exum said one of the drawcards of Broadmeadows was the pathway from the

junior level through to senior level, with the two programs working hand-in-hand. Broadmeadows president Glen Milner said Exum’s appointment was a huge step forward for the association.

“The appointment of Cecil to the role of director of coaching further consolidates our ability to attract people of high calibre and talent to our community based and family oriented organisation,” he said.

Pixton said with the off season changes they expected there may be times this season when they lacked a bit of consistency. He said they probably don’t have the depth in the first team they’ve had the past few years, but had more numbers in the other grades. “We might have some inconsistency early on but we’re not going to throw the baby out with the bath water,” he said. “We’ve got some kids playing in our seconds and thirds that might be able to push through. “We’re optimistic.” Tullamarine kicks off its season on Saturday against Greenvale Kangaroos in a one-day clash. Lalor locks in support, looks to the future Lalor will play in Northern Football League’s division 2 next season, despite rumours to the contrary. Since the end of the NFL season, there had been talk that the club was in trouble and was considering dropping a division or may even fold. But new president Benjamin Charles said the club was not in the position that a lot of people believed it to be. Charles is in his second stint as president of the club and brings a sports background to the role. One of his two businesses provides support to local sporting clubs. “I don’t think we’re hiding away from the fact that we need extra support,” he said. “But that is every club in Australia.” “We have identified that and are putting in some really strong strategies in place. “I have a lot of knowledge what makes clubs successful, on and off the field. “We don’t just want to be okay for next year and the year after. We want to be okay for decades to come.” Charles said they had 80 people at the club’s annual general meeting and there was 15 people on the executive committee. The club will announce at least five new sponsors in the coming weeks with other positives in the works. “We’ve got a lot of things bubbling away,” he said. “We had 80 people at the meeting and everyone is on the same page. That’s a huge amount of people. “A lot of the players attended wanting to hear about the direction of the club.” On the field, the Bloods have struggled the last two seasons. This year they finished seventh with three wins in division 2. Charles said the club would not be asking to drop a division. “We’re in a better position than eight other clubs [the division 3 clubs]. They have to win a grand final to come up,” he said. “There’s zero chance we’ll be relinquishing our position. “Dropping down doesn’t give you more governance, structures and committee members. Maybe it gives you a few more wins.” Charles said they were expecting to start announcing player re-signings in the coming weeks. The Bloods expect to announce their new senior coach in the coming days. The new coach will replace Jarrod King who spent one year in the role.
