Extra time for Ranges survey (Wayne Hawkins)
By Angela Valente
Doing wood a good turn “Each thing I make is unique, individual and one off. Nothing’s the same,” Sunbury’s Russell Ball says of his woodwork. Mr Ball rekindled his high school interest with wood turning 12 years ago after attending a wood show with his son. He purchased a lathe and some chisels, all tools of the wood-turning trade, and began turning out some bowls and platters. “I started solo. Then I was fortunate enough to be tutored by renowned wood turners,” he said, adding that he also learned through magazines, the internet and trial and error. “Platters are probably my favourite thing to make. You can vary rim and depth, and you can use your imagination a lot more”.
Most of Mr Ball’s sales are through word of mouth and he prefers it this way. “I can work at my own pace rather than rushing things for a market stall,” he said. Potential customers can view and purchase Mr Ball’s work at the Phoenix Macedon Ranges Art and Craft exhibition from June 6-9, although he says it’s not about the sales but rather having people appreciate his hard work. The exhibition opens at 7.30pm on June 6 and is opened again from 10am-4pm on June 7-9 at the Old Gisborne Courthouse, Hamilton Street, Gisborne. A survey that will inform a state-level planning policy for Macedon Ranges has drawn more than 200 responses since its launch on May 8. But the council has extended the timeframe for participants to Friday, June 6, to get a broader community view. The survey will help in the formulation of protecting significant areas in the municipality. The questionaire asks what residents value about natural and recreational features of the shire and how those features should be managed. Macedon Ranges is one of four peri-urban areas – those in transition – identified by the state government as playing a significant environmental, recreational, tourism and agribusiness role in the state. Council planning and environment director Sophie Segafredo said more responses were needed to provide a broader community view. “We’re encouraging anyone from the Macedon Ranges, particularly young people, to undertake the survey,” she said. Macedon Ranges Residents Association secretary Christine Pruneau said: “Residents and visitors can tell the council they value what’s here.” At a public workshop on May 22, residents were given information about the current policy and gave feedback to the council and state government officers. A cross-section of residents were contacted by phone and attended a separate workshop. “Some feedback received was that the new
planning statement should apply to the whole shire, not the original designated area outlined in previous policies,” Ms Segafredo said. She said residents also indicated there was a need to separate the Macedon Ranges from urban expansion in surrounding municipalities.

A policy called Statement of Planning Policy No.8 was adopted in 1975 to establish the government’s broad approach to future planning and development of the Macedon Ranges. The policy area is centred around Mount Macedon and applies to the southern half of the shire, including Gisborne, Riddells Creek, Romsey, Lancefield, Woodend and Bullengarook. The new planning statement will build on and update the policy goals of the original statement. Once developed, the new statement will be part of state government policy in the Macedon Ranges planning scheme. The council will write the statement based on feedback from workshops and results from the online survey. The draft will be released for public scrutiny in July before it is considered at the August council meeting. It will then be provided to the state government for approval before being included in the council’s planning scheme. Details: mrsc.vic.gov.au/planning-statement

Hopes of developing the former Victoria University campus at Jackson Hill in Sunbury into a community arts precinct are a step closer. The state government has announced a $30,000 grant towards the development of a plan that will set out recommendations for upgrades at the site. Hume council will put in $50,000 for the plan. The university closed in 2010 and a number of community arts groups are renting rooms on the campus. The tenants, including the Sunbury Community Arts Network (SCAN) and 3NRG community radio, have welcomed the funding,
saying it was the “best news” they had in a long time. In December, Hume council signed a “memorandum of understanding” with Victoria University to guide development and future use of the Jackson Hill site. The plan will focus on revitalising the campus for future community use. SCAN secretary John Beasley said about 900 people a month used the campus, including artists, dancers, potters, theatre groups and audiences. “We’re applauding the work done in formulating this proposal and we’re 100 per cent behind it,” he said. “It’s already a busy place – it’s wonderful that it looks like it could be preserved and enhanced, because if it’s

financed and organised properly, it could be the jewel in the arts crown of the whole western metropolitan area. “It’s something that everyone in Sunbury could be immensely proud of.” Dave Maxwell, a volunteer manager of the Boilerhouse community arts centre, also welcomed the plan funding. “If this can help us to work towards more security and stability then that is great,” he said. “We were in limbo for a long time, but this means that people are thinking about the future, including the government and Hume council.” Hume mayor Casey Nunn said the funding would ensure the arts and cultural needs of Sunbury community would be enhanced.

New hub a ‘must-visit’
NEWS
Briefs Petition against building proposal
By Angela Valente
A petition with 389 signatures was handed to Macedon Ranges council last week objecting to a proposed development at 19 Victoria Street in Macedon. A planning permit application for a site in a commercial zone, including five retail premises and 18 apartments, has been made to the council. Its planning director, Sophie Segafredo, said the council was receiving submissions on the proposal and it was yet to make a decision on whether a planning permit would be granted.
A $3.8 million development in Kyneton’s historic Piper Street will open in July after two years in the works. The development by businessman Graham Jasper (pictured) at the corner of Wedge and Piper streets is called Piper and Wedge and includes seven retail shops along Piper Street, including a 40-seat cafe. Mr Jasper describes the development as a social and shopping hub with a mix of cafe, specialty food stores and homewares. He wanted to attract unique and specialist retailers to the new centre, making it a “mustvisit” destination. “Piper and Wedge is the culmination of a long-term vision for Piper Street. It’s a bespoke sort of street, and we want to maintain that concept.” Mr Jasper’s investment in Piper Street began in 2003 when he bought the building that has been tenanted by Annie Smithers Bistrot. He said the nature of Piper Street was changing. “We have had a lot of traffic through Piper Street in recent times. People have sold and moved on, and so Piper Street is taking on a different flavour.” Piper Street Food Company will take up tenancy in shop 1, expanding its existing Piper Street business. Their new shop will include a 40-seat cafe and a purpose-built cooking school that will teach food techniques, including charcuterie. It’s expected that chef Damian Sandercock will open his doors in September. Mr Jasper and wife Margaret will continue to operate The Emporium, their homewares shop, which will occupy shop 2. The other five retail spaces are available for lease from July 1.
Planning for population growth
A controversial planning document that sets out population growth for the Macedon Ranges to the year 2036 has been adopted in an amended form by the council and will be sent to Planning Minister Matthew Guy for his approval. The paper has evolved through several draft versions, planning panel reports and public scrutiny.

Funding scheme winners
Romsey Primary School, Romsey and Lancefield Districts Historical Society and Lancefield Men’s Shed have each received $500 from the Macedon Ranges council’s community funding scheme. The society will use the cash to fix the ceiling of the historic Seymour Cottage; the Men’s Shed will install overhead power points; and the primary school will install a kitchen facility in the community garden.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome 20 Horne St, Sunbury.
9744 5066
Written By: Tammy Lechte
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a common upper limb condition that is characterised by damage to the median nerve, affecting movement and feeling in the hand. It causes pain or ‘numbness and tingling’ of the fingers and thumb particularly while you sleep . CTS may lead to a loss of dexterity of the hand when dealing with small objects like coins, pins or pegs as well as discomfort in activities such as driving or holding objects in sustained postures. It can also cause pain with repetitive or forceful hand motions. Symptoms ultimately progress with time and damage to the median nerve is not always reversible (even with hand surgery) therefore a Hand Therapy assessment is the key to early diagnosis and management. Hand Therapy intervention can help by: • Providing education about the condition and ways to reduce mild to moderate symptoms before surgery may be indicated. • Ensuring correct wrist/ hand positioning with fabrication of an individualised thermoplastic brace to help decrease pressure on the nerve, as ‘’off the shelf’’ braces can amplify symptoms if fitted incorrectly. • Activity modification and advice in relation to daily activities • Providing a home exercise program including tendon and nerve gliding exercises or strengthening. • In severe cases, assist with referral to a hand surgeon and provide post operative management as required. So please don’t ignore symptoms if you are experiencing them, as a Hand Therapy consultation may be the difference between long term damage or relief!
Radiology service now bulk-billed
S
unbury residents have easy access to advanced CT scanning services with bulk billing. Lake Imaging practice manager Chris Proctor says a recent policy decision to bulk bill CT scans performed at Sunbury, Melton and North Melbourne has led to a big increase in referrals. “Sunbury now enjoys local access to some of Australia’s most advanced diagnostic technologies and a resident radiologist,” he says. “Many people in regional Victoria formerly travelled to major cities for scans, which can be time consuming and stressful for patients and their families. “So having access to radiology services in Sunbury can make life much easier for them. “More than two thirds of patients using our services are bulk billed.” Technologies such as CT can provide early diagnosis for many medical conditions, while test results frequently clear up unfounded concerns. Lake Imaging provides true multi-phasic volumetric scans including 3D scans of arteries, brain, lungs,
kidneys and other vital organs, as well as skeletal structure and teeth. Modern scanners are quicker, quieter, more userfriendly and safer than older machines, and give patients a more pleasant scanning experiences. “Lake Imaging provides the latest radiology equipment and the specialists needed to operate them in all its regional centres,” Proctor says. “In Sunbury, our equipment includes a state-of-the-art GE LightSpeed VCT. “Naturally, we are concerned for patients about proposed changes to Medicare arrangements in the recent federal budget, but for the time being local access to CT services has never been more affordable.”
Lake Imaging, 10 Spavin Drive, Sunbury. Open 8.30am-6pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 8.30am-7.30pm Wednesday, and 9am-1pm Saturday. Inquiries: 9744 5344 or www.lakeimaging. com.au
Chris Proctor says Lake Imaging’s Sunbury patients have access to cutting-edge diagnostic technologies.
Sunbury now home to Victoria’s best radiology services Lake Imaging Sunbury provides local access to Victoria’s most advanced radiology service and a resident radiologist. And now there is no reason to delay CT scans as they can be Bulk Billed. This means there is no need to travel outside the region for radiology services. HOUSE & HOME

$655,000
Shorthand CommuniCation It must be age but I do find that I am often asking my charming receptionist to interpret text messages.
• Informal meals area • Very spacious rumpus roombuilt-in entertainment unit with sliding doors • Large family bathroom Wrap around verandahs add extra living and enjoyment. Exceptional features include inground solar heated pool, double car-port, town water plus 4 rain water tanks, 2 solid fuel heaters, heat banks and much, much more. In all weathers and in all seasons, here is a wonderfully spacious home in a picturesque location! Inspection a must!
Communicating in shorthand seems to have become the norm and it can cause confusion for many. Real Estate has its own form of shorthand and I thought you may find it useful to have some interpretations. I received a message which read “FSBO in ----- Street” – confusion took over. What on earth is a “FSBO”? The interpretation is “For Sale by Owner”. It was this confusion on my part that has prompted the following list for you. S.F.H – Solid fuel heater. An enclosed wood burning heater Section 32 – also known as a Vendor Statement. A legally required document compiled by a solicitor or conveyancer. P.O.A – Price on application, or, Power of Attorney W.I.R- Walk-in-robe, B.I.R- Built-in-robe W.T.R- Walk through robe – usually leading to the ensuite O.F.P- Open Fire Place O.F.I- Open for inspection I am quite sure that there are many more short-cuts which I have not thought of but I will add more as they come to mind. Those of you with teen-age children or with young adults in your life will have an insight into the use of “short-hand”. Communication has certainly changed and shot-hand is the vogue LOL – not have I just said “lots of love” or “laugh out loud”? – How confusing it is!
