Health services dropped ‘‘
It is a very difficult time in community services...

Agencies were working through the implications of merging organisations. “The process at the moment is legal due diligence. “The financial consultants have been appointed and will work with our accountant to go through the organisation and decide what the risks are. “The [board] members will be making the final decision. “We’re hoping there will be a recommendation before the board by the end of September.” At this month’s Macedon Ranges business excellence awards Cobaw won the award for ‘excellence in well-being service’. The health agency’s new direction will be under new chief executive Margaret MacDonald, who takes over the reins from Ms McLennan, who is retiring on Friday.
Thrills maybe, chills certain Mount Macedon’s Dominic Romeo will mentor a group of young Aboriginal adults through the physical and mental challenges they will face on a monumental journey to Antarctica. The world’s first leadership expedition on ice, Outback to Icecap, will involve Mr Romeo and a team of other mentors pushing themselves to their physical limits. Preparations for the adventure of a lifetime will start in August with a three-day boot camp in Mount Macedon. ■ Full story: page 12

Cobaw Community Health will consider cutting its operating hours and potentially charge for services as it battles with state and federal government funding cutbacks. Cobaw, a not for profit organisation, provides low-cost services to more than 5000 people each year in the Macedon Ranges across childhood, youth, families, adults, aged and disability sectors. Chief executive Anne McLennan said Cobaw had to change its service structure in a bid to keep operating. “It’s a difficult time in community services everywhere,” she said. “We are having to make some very difficult decisions, which include cutting back the amount of time services can stay open each week, and which services can continue to be free for everyone, or where a fee for service can be offered for those able to pay a modest amount.” Youth Connections, a federally funded program that supports disengaged young people to gain employment, has been cut and will finish on June 30. On that date, state funding that supports diabetes education will dry up, as will home and community care funding that supports older people who want to live independently. Facing an uncertain future beyond December are federally funded programs that support people in parenting, emergency relief and other youth programs. Funding for other services, including allied health, speech pathology, cardiac rehabilitation and youth crisis support, is also under a cloud. “We have tried everything we can to
maintain our current funding sources for programs and in some cases we have been successful,” Ms McLennan said. “Our priority is to keep services open and to maintain service levels, but it means we have to make some very difficult decisions along the way. “We are planning for the long term to ensure that local services remain accessible to local people.” In April, Cobaw announced it is negotiating a merger with Bendigo Community Health Services.

Budget win for arts, tourism By Angela Valente A Woodend arts festival that has wrapped up a “record year” and a tourism organisation have gained financial support in an 11th-hour decision by Macedon Ranges council. Tourism Macedon Ranges and the Woodend Winter Arts Festival were each allocated $10,000 from the council’s budget at its meeting last Wednesday. The council was expected to adopt the draft budget without amendment, but mayor Roger Jukes wanted to increase the council’s contribution to both organisations in light of
their submissions presented to the council on June 4. To find the extra $20,000, the council has cut oval maintenance and its ‘places and partnerships’ programs by $5000 each, and student placements by $10,000. Cr Jukes said the arts festival, which runs from June 6-9, benefited the whole community. “The festival has just completed a record year. Ten thousand provided by the council can leverage $17,500 from Tourism Victoria with potential additional federal funds. Without our money, it could leave a potential black hole of $17,500.”
Cr Jennifer Anderson said the budget was a difficult process and many organisations had competing needs. “We’re making changes now where an executive said they need the money for other projects. At this late stage, taking money away from new initiatives is not appropriate.” Cr Sally Piper also opposed the new commitment of $20,000, arguing the two organisations could raise the money themselves. “We’ve got footpaths in Macedon that won’t get done. A variety of people made submissions and they get left out and economic development once again is lifted to the top.”
The council will raise its rates by 4.8 per cent, which equates to about $80 a year for ratepayers living at median-valued properties. The total rates bill for the owner of a house valued at $445,000, with weekly garbage, green waste and recycling collection, will be $1740. Cr Russell Mowatt feared that money would start tightening up across the economy in the next financial year as a result of the federal budget. “Initial implications for councils across the state is a funding freeze at 2013-14 levels. We have challenging times ahead of us as a council, state and, indeed, as a nation,” he said.

Lock it or lose it: police message they leave them at night. This is where we are getting the opportunist would-be-thief walking along the street trying door handles. “The message is very clear – lock it or lose it.” He said police were still seeing average statistics in this crime area, with a particular spike on days leading into the weekend and holiday periods. Sergeant Letchford warned residents to be alert and call police if there was any suspicious behaviour. “If the community are observant enough we can catch these individuals. Sunbury is predominantly a very safe town … however there are still these crimes of opportunity.”
Gisborne Secondary College students have also developed a community awareness campaign in the wake of police warnings. Year 11 students last week launched the Lock It or Lose It campaign, in the presence of Crime Prevention Minister Edward O’Donohue. The campaign, which is designed to encourage people to lock their vehicles, was launched in partnership with Swinburne University School of Design, Victoria Police and Macedon Ranges council. The project is funded as part of the Victorian government’s Community Crime Prevention Program. Yasemin Talat

Motorists across Sunbury and Macedon are being warned to “lock it or lose it” as police crack down on the rising trend of property crime. Theft of and theft from motor vehicles continues to be a concern for police in the district, where there has been an upward trend in the crime, said Sergeant John Letchford from Sunbury police. Sergeant Letchford warned community members to be more aware of their surroundings and to always lock up. “It’s a crime of opportunity and certainly the opportunity still exists,” he said. “People need to lock their motor cars before
A decision on whether Kyneton Primary School will remain at its current site or relocate to the town’s secondary school is due to be made next month. The first phase of consultation on future options for the school was held on Monday last week to gauge residents’ views on whether to upgrade the current site of the primary school on Baynton Street or relocate it to the secondary college on Edgecombe Street. About 80 people attended the meeting. Friends of Kyneton Education spokeswoman Lisa Ohlmus said it was positive to see people passionate about public education in the town. “A theme that stood out from the Friends of Kyneton Education point of view was whether the best educational future for our kids could be achieved at a new site or at the current site.” Primary school principal Wendy Pearce said attendees were asked to identify what was important to them about the current school and what they might like to change. The feedback will be used to guide the formation of a survey to “gauge opinion and delve deeper into what a future school will look like”. “Community opinion is extremely important in this decision-making process,” Ms Pearce said. It is intended that by mid-July, Kyneton Primary School council will be presented with a paper from consultant Miriam O’Brien detailing the opinions gathered. The school council will then make a recommendation based on the data and it will be sent to the Education Minister Martin Dixon for his approval.

Parking fines a council bonanza By Yasemin Talat Hume motorists have forked out almost $5 million in parking fines in the past three years, and lack of parking space is being blamed. In the first 11 months of the current financial year – from July 1 to May 31 – council inspectors issued 13,324 parking fines, which brought in $1,585,837 in revenue. That follows $1,653,305 in the 2011-12 financial year and $1,694,145 for 2012-13.
The most common offence, drawing 3199 fines, was parking longer than permitted. Almost one third of those (913) were in Sunbury alone. Other fines included stopping contrary to a no-stop sign and stopping in a loading zone, with fines ranging from $50 to $144. Sunbury residents and business owners said a lack of parking space was one of the core issues behind the number of fines. “There is inadequate parking and that’s what council should be taking action on,”
said Bernie O’Farrell, president of Sunbury Residents Association. “Parking has been a long-term source of concern for people in Sunbury. Council needs to . . . increase the availability of parking.” Michael Osborne, president of the Sunbury Business Association, said the difficulty in finding long-term parking was an issue for employees and business owners, who needed suitable parking for the entire work day. “From a business perspective, I’m very concerned with the lack of parking availability,” he said.
“Our employees have to take our customers’ parking spaces. There are no facilities in Sunbury for employees to park for an extended length of time or for a day. If we want to encourage businesses to come to Sunbury we have to allow for that.” Steve Crawley, director of city infrastructure for Hume, said parking and traffic laws applied to ensure the safe and fair use of roads for all motorists. Money collected from fines goes into the council’s consolidated revenue.

Sunbury house prices have remained static the past year, according to the latest data. Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV) figures show the area is still one of the more affordable options for first-home buyers with a median price of $360,000, down slightly from $361,000 at the same time last year. REIV chief executive Enzo Raimondo said Sunbury was relatively affordable compared to suburbs such as Tullamarine and Taylors Hill but was on a par with other outer northern suburbs such as Craigieburn. The median house price for Tullamarine at the same time was $410,000; Hillside was $449,000 and Taylors Hill sat at $490,000. Mr Raimondo said prices in Sunbury had stabilised after a spike in the previous five years. “Sunbury went up by 33 per cent over this period, compared to the average of 28 per cent for the City of Hume,” Mr Raimondo said. “But much of that growth occurred in 2010 and 2011 and prices haven’t really moved all that much since then, including in the past year.” First National Real Estate Sunbury agent Patrick Franklin said Sunbury offered good entry-level buying options. “I definitely think the affordability is there for what the town has to offer,” Mr Franklin said. “It’s a diverse market in Sunbury but there are plenty of opportunities under that entry level of under $300,000. “Overall, the market’s strong, pricing is strong and healthy, and it’s performing really well.”

A passion for pink It was a sea of pink at Gisborne Secondary College last week to raise funds for the McGrath Foundation. The day was organised by Bishop and Cherry House at the Gisborne college and required students and staff to dress in pink and make a gold coin donation to the foundation. During recess and lunch breaks, year 9 students made and sold pink fairy floss while students studying food technology baked pink cupcakes to sell to staff and students. The McGrath Foundation raises money to support families going through breast cancer by providing specialised nurses in communities. It also aims to raise breast cancer awareness in young women. The school’s fund-raising tally is expected to reach $2000 and includes donations from students and their families. Angela Valente
The three-person panel appointed to oversee Sunbury’s secession from Hume has until next Monday to deliver its report. Former local government minister Jeanette Powell appointed the panel in October last year to advise on the most effective way to separate the town from Hume. Since then there has been no news from the government or the panel about how they will achieve the split without causing the unacceptable rate hikes predicted by accounting firm KPMG in its original financial analysis of the idea. Instead, the community consultation, running in tandem with the panel’s work and headed by Upper House MP Amanda Millar, has been marred by complaints of sloppy processes and conclusions. One major hiccup arose from comments by Ms Millar that she found “considerable” support for commissioners or administrators to replace all elected Hume councillors and oversee the transition of Sunbury out of Hume. She said she based her conclusions on verbal and written feedback. But Ms Powell had earlier assured Hume councillors they would represent their constituents until the next council elections, to be held in 2016. Just under 60 per cent of Hume ratepayers voted in a secession poll last year. Of those, less than 60 per cent voted for Sunbury to secede. Helen Grimaux
Workshop tackles ‘ice’ epidemic By Angela Valente Macedon Ranges’ top cop Inspector Ryan Irwin says the use of amphetamine and methamphetamine in the shire is on the rise. He wants to help arm residents with information about how to tackle the problem. Inspector Irwin, who is also the chairman of the Macedon Ranges safety committee, said the drug, commonly known as “ice”, was becoming the drug of choice. “It is not a term I like to use, but it is because of its accessibility, affordability and
It’s the success of your business. But it’s bigger than that.
the effect it has on people, which I’m told is an instantaneous high. The other factor is its addictiveness.” Inspector Irwin will lead a free community workshop in Kyneton next week which has been designed to give residents real and practical information about the drug. It will be facilitated in partnership with Anex, which provides training, support and leadership in harm-reduction strategies. The workshop will include a panel of local service providers and will cover what ice is and how it works, what people can do to help, the
impacts it has on family and friends and where to go for support. “It’s aimed at parents and community members who may come into contact with ice-affected people,” Inspector Irwin said. “Whether they have been affected or not, we know that teenage children will be confronted with this in the next two to three years and this is about arming people with the information so they can be equipped if they find themselves confronted with this issue.” An ongoing police operation dubbed “Disrupt” was helping to disengage drug rings
in central Victoria, including the Macedon Ranges. In the year to March drug offences in the Macedon Ranges police area, which includes Mount Alexander shire, jumped 52.5 per cent from the previous year, from 118 to 180 cases. Inspector Irwin said the figures related to proactive enforcement. The information session is from 7-9pm at the Kyneton Town Hall on Tuesday, July 1 and is free to all residents in the Macedon Ranges. Register to attend by calling Annie Rowland on 5422 0226.

Facts up in the air
Home, home on the Ranges
While I appreciate Mr Lacey’s right to his opinion, this article and this newspaper fail once again to present the facts or speak to those who know them [Airfield plan needed, Star Weekly, June 3]. The Kyneton Aero Club has maintained an operational policy as required under the services agreement it has with the council since the establishment of that contract. This document is an annex to a contract between the council and the Kyneton Aero Club and details how the club will meet its obligations under the service agreement. Contrary to Mr Lacey’s claims, the vast majority of airfields in Australia do not have policies which define flight paths, flight times, etc. Flight paths in uncontrolled airspace (that’s 99 per cent of Australia and its airfields) are determined by the pilot in command for the safe operation of their aircraft. While consideration is given to local preferences and guidance, ultimately the flight path of the aircraft is at the discretion of the pilot in command and they operate under quite stringent federal air law. Matt Henderson, president, Kyneton Aero Club
Villawood Wonderland
It’s interesting to get an insight into the apparent reading habits of the Villawood spokesperson [Hill plan back on agenda, Star Weekly, June 10]. Alice in Wonderland comes to mind. Alice and her friends ascribed meanings to words that were often the very opposite of what the words meant. Villawood’s reported statement that “the developer says their new proposal could be considered as an in-fill development and fit within the Woodend Structure
Plan”, is literally in “wonderland”. In-fill clearly means development within the town boundary. Villawood is outside the boundary! What’s changed? ■ A revised proposal reducing lots from 300 to 150. However, a large-scale retirement village is proposed, which is likely to result in the overall project returning to 300 lots. What hasn’t changed? ■ The anonymous nature of ownership of Villawood, and how this completely negates the council “conflict of interest” procedures; ■ The demand to rezone 500-plus acres when 100 is all that is required; ■ The fact that once rezoning is approved the developer is in a powerful position to demand additional lots. When this inevitably occurs, council is put to significant expense/time/being off task, not to mention the lottery of VCAT; and ■ The sense of entitlement. Villawood has a strongly developed sense of entitlement. They assume that by a speculative purchase of 500-plus acres, the Woodend community/council will easily accede to their demand for rezoning. The Woodend Structure Plan has recently been born, but its continuing life is in doubt if developers are able to circumvent the words and spirit of the plan. John Shaw, Woodend Star Weekly welcomes letters no longer than 200 words. All letters are subject to editing and must include a name, address and phone number. Post: 12 Howes St, Airport West, 3142. Green spaces and natural assets are what residents value about the Ranges, according to a survey by Macedon Ranges council. The survey, to gauge views on the formation of a state-level planning policy for the area, asked residents what they valued most about the shire and its unique character. The draft planning document is expected to be released next month for exhibition and residents can make submissions. The council aims to consider the final planning statement in September.
Group seeks wind-farm support
Macedon Ranges sustainability group has written an open letter to candidates for the state seat of Macedon calling for their support for a community-owned wind farm in Woodend. The state government has declared Macedon Ranges a no-go zone for wind farm projects. The letter calls for candidates, including Labor’s Mary-Anne Thomas, Liberal’s Donna Petrovich and the Greens’ Neil Barker, to commit to repealing the anti-wind farm laws that have prevented a group of Woodend residents building a community wind farm in the town.
Storm comes a-calling

Drive to conditions: police urge By Yasemin Talat Drivers are the real risk on the roads this winter, says a top traffic cop. Macedon Ranges highway patrol officer-incharge Sergeant Geoff Neil said that drivers were the biggest risk on roads in winter, followed closely by weather conditions. Sergeant Neil said drivers often neglected to adapt their driving to suit the weather and road conditions. He urged motorists to use common sense
when behind the wheel. “Drivers need to drive to the conditions,” he said. “We need to recognise that different environmental factors require different driving techniques. “If you get up in the morning and it’s cold or wet outside … surely it will register that you need to take a little bit of extra care that day, you need to drive slower and be aware of the road surface that you’re driving on.” Sergeant Neil said the Calder North-South traffic route was particularly prone to adverse

road conditions during inclement weather conditions and warned drivers to be cautious. “Just because it says you can do 60 or 80 or 100 km/h it doesn’t necessarily mean the conditions are appropriate for that speed,” he said.
Sergeant Neil said it was not only weather but also other environmental factors like road surfaces that drivers needed to be aware of. “Broadly, all we seek from the motorists is consideration and recognition of their surroundings.” Sergeant Neil also reminded drivers to use their indicators when driving and to avoid distractions. “Just use your nous, drive to the conditions, be courteous in your driving and let others know what your intentions are.”

Ms Portelli is an experimental mosaic artist, trying different ways to permanently record images and ideas through tiles. “I had visions at night: my mind would walk the roads at 2.30am and I would see the complexities of the road and the winding turns,” she said. “That’s how I put together my Black Saturday piece.” She said visitors to the open studios often “see themselves in the artwork”. “They think: ‘I like the message in this piece’ or ‘you make me feel comfortable and excited’.”
Having lived in Kyneton for 25 years, Ms Portelli said it was time to give back to and participate in her community. “The artists are all geared up and ready. We are well trained to answer anyone’s questions.” Creative producer Jill Rivers said the selected artists spanned diverse genres, from painting, sculpture and textiles to handcrafted art, photography and mosaics. “The Daylesford and Macedon Ranges region has developed iconic status for its day-visit distance from Melbourne and concentration of fine foods, wines and spas. “Its other cultural riches, the wonderful painters, sculptors, and other artists, have largely remained out of the public eye.” Open studios will run for three weekends from November 1. New yard to boost Sunbury rail Metropolitan train services on the Sunbury line are expected to be made safer, more reliable and efficient once work on a $65 million train stabling yard is complete. Public Transport Terry Mulder said the Calder Park project would help deliver more services, more often ‘‘with greater reliability, punctuality and safety’’ as fewer trains will need to be transferred from other lines. Work on the yard, 15 minutes from
North’s young dropping out Melbourne’s north has one of the city’s lowest school retention rates, but young people needing career support, training or life skills advice or a driver’s licence to get a job are unlikely to have a local learning and employment network [LLEN). Hume-Whittlesea LLEN is one of more than 30 locally based support agencies in Victoria under threat after the federal budget dropped ongoing funding. Chairman John Fry said that without adequate funding, events and programs that supported young people, particularly those at risk, could disappear. “Young people are expected to earn or learn,” Mr Fry said. “But the government removes funding from the organisation that helps young people achieve this. It makes no sense.”
Sunbury station on Holden Street near the Calder Freeway, began last week. Stage one is expected to be completed by the middle of next year. But the timing for stage two, which will incorporate 30 additional train tracks, remains unclear. Two Sunbury line trains are presently stored at St Albans, with additional trains kept at Sunbury and Watergardens. “Ensuring trains can be stored at key locations across the network is vital for the (Supplied)

efficient and reliable operation of our trains and planning for more train services,” Mr Mulder said. “Without more stabling [at Calder Park], trains would need to travel long distances without passengers to reach their start-of-service location.” Mr Mulder’s spokesman said the additional stabling will allow extra services on the Sunbury line when required. Mr Mulder said level crossings at the Melton Highway and Calder Freeway were
unlikely to be affected by operations at the new Calder Park yards. “Trains will typically exit and enter the stabling facility out of peak periods, early in the morning or late at night after the last timetabled arrival at Sunbury.” The capacity of the entire rail network is expected to improve with the addition of the new Calder Park yard, in conjunction with other stabling sites around Melbourne. The Calder Park yard will include an amenities building, car park, lighting and CCTV coverage.
Recruit ready for action Sunbury’s Jake Box is one of the CFA’s newest recruits joining more than 685 career firefighters already working at fire stations across Victoria. Mr Box will be stationed at Caroline Springs, where he will complete on-the-job training. The 23-year-old said he always wanted to be a firefighter and was keen to start the next phase of his training. “It’s a job you can be proud of, something you wouldn’t mind telling people about,” he said. The former forklift driver graduated from a 16-week basic training course earlier this month with 20 other firefighters. “The most rewarding part of the recruit training is meeting a different range of people and becoming friends with everyone,” he said. The CFA is taking applications and is keen to increase the number of female career firefighters. For more details visit at www.cfa.vic.gov.au. Yasemin Talat

Music to mums’ ears Mums and bubs will start grooving to a new beat when Goonawarra Neighbourhood House launches dance classes especially for the mother and baby duo. ‘Mums and bubs dance’ is just one of the new classes being added to the growing timetable at Goonawarra next month. Manager Alfina Sinatra said she was keen to introduce the new programs to the Sunbury community. “Research shows this is a really good program to offer to mums and bubs, especially new mums,” she said. The mums and bubs dance classes will include simple dance techniques, lots of movement and dance combinations that will promote bonding with mums and their babies. Ms Sinatra said there were endless benefits for both mums and their bubs from learning
to exercise. “It’s also a place for mums to meet other mums and have fun together with their babies in a social environment that’s safe,” she said. “To engage mums and bubs early and get them out and socialising and doing something fun is also beneficial to ward off those early day blues that can occur.” Also landing on the timetable are separate yoga classes for adults and kids, Pilates and Nifty 50s Pilates, and education and well-being classes such as Work for Wellness for women re-entering the workforce. “We’re really interested in keeping the community healthy and engaged,” Ms Sinatra said. Students have a field day Salesian College students put their environment lessons into practice last week by planting more than 600 trees. About 30 students and staff teamed up with staff from Western Water for the two groups’ annual planting day. This year they headed to Deep Creek in Romsey to help support the work of the Deep Creek Landcare Group, which has been working to restore native habitat to the creek frontage. The event, an extension of World Environment Day celebrations, is organised annually to support local Landcare groups. Western Water’s general manager of customer and community relations, Peter Donlon, said it was a great opportunity to support the Deep Creek Landcare group’s “wonderful” work. “It’s great to see the citizens of the future out getting their hands dirty to help our local environment,” he said. 1134651-PB20-14

Still with its new-shine intact, this house built in 2006 has a location with intrinsic appeal for families and retirees: close to Gisborne and Holy Cross primary schools and the train station. A more recent attraction for all ages is the provision of a bus service (GisBus) from the station. There are five bedrooms, including the main with en suite. This is a boon for larger families or retirees wanting space to welcome extended family and visitors. Living areas are a lounge room at the front, a study, and a large family-meals zone around the kitchen that forms the hub of the home. A north-facing, covered outdoor entertainment area meets entertainment and relaxation demands. Extras are 14 electric solar panels (covering most energy costs), 2.7-metre ceilings, gas ducted heating, two water tanks with pumps, extra shedding and an integrated double garage built for large vehicles that has internal access into the kitchen.

bright and contemporary and has all the perks of a larger house. On the ground level, behind the cafe, is a kitchen and meals area with floating floorboards, ceiling fan and a split-system. Bifold doors in the kitchen conceal a work space (no appliances needed) and there’s a brekky bar. French doors open from here to a partly covered concrete courtyard with closets and a cupboard laundry; a rear roller door provides access to courtyard car parking from the back laneway. Tassy oak stairs ascend to a large living room with floating floorboards, doors to a front balcony, and a wonderful light well letting in streams of natural light. A hallway heads from here to a separate toilet, main bathroom with a closet and

shower over a spa, and three bedrooms. Each of the secondary bedrooms has a closeable light well, ceiling fan and built-in robes with frosted-glass doors. The main bedroom has french doors to a rear balcony, a compact en suite and built-in robes with, again, frosted-glass doors. This is a property to tempt astute investors looking to begin or add to their portfolio, a couple wanting to have a go at running a business, and a young family seeking a work-from-home vibe. And it’s in a good spot, just off the Calder Freeway before heading into Kyneton’s main streets. Carole Levy 19 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 24, 2014

Thank you Whorlow’s We wish to sincerely thank the Sunbury L.J Whorlow team for their professional handling of our property. L.J.Whorlow handled the rental of our Sunbury property for four years, enabling us to travel without a care knowing that Nina Sidari and the Whorlow team was expertly handling all details, such as interviewing tenants, inspections, maintenance and keeping us informed and up to date at all stages. When we made the decision to sell, Karen Singleton was always available sharing her experience, local knowledge and worked tirelessly with integrity and obtained a great result for us, selling the property in six days. We were impressed and grateful for the detailed feedback we obtained by both the rental and sales team and the professional documentation we were provided. We thoroughly recommend L.J. Whorlow Sunbury.

SIGNS THAT YOU NEED A NEW HOME Moving into a new home can be a hassle. Nobody really enjoys packing up all of their belongings and carting them off to a new place. This can lead many people to stay in their houses for a long period of time, despite their needs or the family’s changing over time. But sometimes moving house is a necessary part of life.Whether it’s due to a steadily growing family, children moving out or shifting for a new job, there are many reasons why you might need to relocate. For example: It’s no longer what you want - there may be many things you like about your home, but over time, there may be other things you have begun to dislike. For instance, perhaps you liked your home’s proximity to a nearby primary school for your children. But if your kids have all grown up and moved out, you might not appreciate the noise anymore. You’re strapped for room. When you bought your home, you may have thought two bedrooms would be sufficient. However, since you moved in, your family might have expanded rapidly. If one of these signs is evident in your home, get in touch with a us to get closer to finding a house more suitable for your needs.
WHAT PRICE IS ACHEIVABLE? The longer a home is on the market, the more difficult it becomes to achieve a price premium. Buyers frequently ask how long a property has been for sale. They suspect something is wrong with the price or the property if nobody else has brought it. Ultimately, properties are commodities that are subject to market forces. Our skill lies in maximising your opportunity. To determine an accurate range that your home/ property is likely to sell in, we consider three key elements. 1. Current Market dynamics (economy, interest rates, employment, wages) 2. Supply versus demand (the ratio of buyers for a property like yours to the no. of properties competing for their offer) 3. Similar properties recently sold locally
HOME SELLERS GUIDE Selling your property is not a task undertaken every day. When you’re selling, it’s important to be fully informed and plan each step carefully. This booklet guides you through the process, providing advice on

Commercial Real Estate Investment The financial industry advisors will be the first to tell you that real estate investing has the potential to bring in serious profits. They will also carefully inform you that the risks in some cases sometimes outweigh the potential, especially if they are among the more cautious investors in the industry. Those who have made money in real estate however will tell you that investing in real estate is worth every ounce of risk when you invest soundly, carefully do your research and take expert professional advice and to find your way to real estate investing security. Commercial real estate is somewhat unique among real estate investment types. This is the type of real estate that sometimes requires a greater investment to get into the game, much higher than most residential property and poses some risks depending on what you plan to do with your commercial real estate investment. Most investors find leasing office or building space to be the safest route to take. When it comes to real estate investing a secure path is generally that of leasing office space, shop, factory or warehouse space to businesses. They feel that this is a relatively steady source of income because most businesses prefer to keep their locations as long as possible. Smart business owners are well aware that customers, clients, and vendors need to be able to find them in order to do business. If you have an interest in any real estate sale, purchase or leasing feel free to call me, John Dunlop on 9744 2555 or call into our offices in Sunbury and Gisborne for a talk.

Have you read those advice pieces on creating the perfect password? Include a symbol or two, they say. Maybe a product manager at Kia was trying create a password when he came up with pro_cee’d and somehow it slipped through to the guys in marketing and, hipsters that they are, they decided to go with it. Mistakes have certainly happened in car names before and nothing else explains one this weird. Honda once named a vehicle the Acty Crawler, Mazda had the Bongo Brawny and there was Isuzu’s Mysterious Utility Wizard. My favourite silly name was Subaru’s Touring Bruce. At least you could spell those; what are the people at the traffic office going to do when you try to register a pro_cee’d? The thing is that, apart from its name, the pro_cee’d is actually a terrific car. It has a nicely flexible motor that sounds great as it’s winding up and a six-speed manual that’s light and fast. Get the launch right (the first time or two you’ll probably stall) and it’s quick off the mark and willing, all the way up to wherever you choose to lift off. This is combined with handling that’s surprising for a Korean car. It’s flat and direct through challenging corners with a really pleasing grip, and there’s a feeling of solidity that’s most reassuring, even over broken bitumen. The front wheels turn in nicely and point accurately, the rear ones tuck in and hold, and the body stays flat and rigid. And all the while you know exactly what’s happening.
KIA PRO_CEE’D What is it?
A moderately hot hatch at an extremely hot price.
What’s in it?
A turbocharged 150-kilowatt 1.6-litre with a six-speed manual.
Is it thirsty?
I used 11 litres per 100 kilometres in the city, eight in the country. The official combined figure is 7.4.

Through all of this enthusiasm, the fuel economy stays pretty good. The cabin is well finished, too, with tactile surfaces and a good level of equipment. What will most impress your discerning friends is the LCD speedometer which, with the touch of a button (on the steering wheel), flips from a conventional analogue display to grouped instruments covering turbo boost, torque output and water temperature, along with a digital speedo. Seating is respectable, too, the driver getting an electric lumbar support. It’s easy and fast to get comfy. At least in the front. This is far from the quickest or most powerful hatch around, but it has enough go to make it a heap of fun. Hard to beat at the price. The Kia Pro_cee’d is available at Essendon Kia, Wirraway Road, Essendon Fields, www.essendonkia.com.au
SPORT Tigers pinch mud battle By Tara Murray It was low scoring and it wasn’t pretty as the mud-bogged match between Lancefield and Sunbury Kangaroos went down to the wire in the Riddell District Football League on Saturday. The ground became so churned at Lancefield Park that it was difficult to tell which team was which by the end, as the Tigers held on to win 4.4 (28) to 3.4 (22). The Kangaroos led by three points at the end of the third term after scoring the only goal of the quarter through a free kick. In the fourth quarter the ball spent most of the time in the middle of the ground, a stalemate as both sides fought contested ball after contested ball. But a free kick and a resulting 50-metre penalty helped the Tigers get the first goal of the quarter and the lead. An error for the Kangaroos in defence saw the Tigers kick a second goal not long after. Tigers coach Sean Tobias said it was “a real hard battle”. “The ground had chopped up a bit and it was just a tight, muddy battle,” he said. “The second quarter was really good for us and we were able to lock it in the forward line. The inside 50s for the match, 29-20, would be really low on a normal day; it just showed how hard it was.” The Tigers’ win was tempered by injuries to two key players. “We lost our captain with a hamstring injury and a key defender with an AC shoulder injury, meaning we lost our midfield rotation,” Tobias said. “And it allowed the Kangaroos to play a lot taller in their forward line.” Tobias said Tevita Fonua and Luke Malone were best for the Tigers. “It has to be an even effort on days like this; you can’t have any one drop off,” he said. Matthew Leonard was best player for the Kangaroos. The win moves the Tigers to seventh on the ladder with five wins. In other results, Broadford sneaked across the line against Woodend, 7.9 (51) to 7.6 (48); Diggers Rest ran away with it in the last quarter against Wallan, 16.16 (112) to 9.6 (60); and Rockbank was too strong for Kilmore 15.10 (100) to 7.10 (52). Top two sides Romsey and Riddell also claimed convincing wins, over Melton Centrals and Macedon, respectively. For more photos, go to www.macedonranges. starweekly.com.au.
Young Saints are showing signs of life It’s been a tough couple of years for the Trentham Football Club, but the Saints appear to be coming out the other side. Losing 36 players in one off-season, as the club did 18 months ago, would hurt any club and Trentham is only now starting to get its confidence back in the Maryborough Castlemaine District Football League. Coach Clayton Scoble said it had been a roller-coaster ride for the Saints, who have two wins and a draw from eight matches. “We have picked up some valuable players this year, which has given us something to work with,’’ Scoble said. “The average age of the playing group is 21 and we are trying to get a winning culture. Most of the boys have gone from junior football and just hanging around with mates to playing senior football.” Scoble said with many new players, the team was only just starting to gel. “What we haven’t been able to do is string four quarters together,” he said before Saturday’s 139-point loss to second-placed Lexton. “The last three or four games we have been in front at half-time. The maturity of the guys is still developing.’’ Scoble said Macedon recruit Mark Strickland and Elliott and Taylor Drew had been keys to the club’s improvement. “Strickland has been very consistent all season. He gives us a target up forward who kicks multiple goals.’’ Scoble said the Saints were aiming to play in the finals this year. Trentham is 10th on the ladder after Saturday’s 23.9 (147) to 1.2 (8) loss to Lexton. “I think we can give it a shake and play finals,’’ Scoble said. “The top four is sorted, but the rest is an even playing field. “The goal for the rest of the season is to knock off one of the top teams. We only lost to [third-placed] Newstead by 13 points, so it shows we can match it with the top sides when we play well.” Tara Murray
Lancefield’s Tevita Fonua was one of the best on ground. (Wayne Hawkins)
Injuries put Centrals on the slippery road to defeat At three-quarter time on Saturday it looked as if Melton Centrals were going to avenge last year’s Riddell District Netball League grand final loss to Romsey. The Redbacks scored the first five goals of the game, but Centrals adapted to the wet conditions better at Romsey Park to hold 32-24 going into the last break. Centrals were dominating in mid-court and shooter Rebecca Morabito was capitalising on her teammates’ hard work. The Redbacks looked like they were still trying to play dry-weather netball, turning over the ball with too many long passes. The final quarter started with the Redbacks changing their approach to suit the conditions and their defence started to dominate. That’s where it started to go wrong for Centrals. Goal defence Melissa Laird slipped and departed with an ankle injury. The loss of Laird unsettled Centrals, with the Redbacks making the most of the situation to close the margin. A head-collision between two Centrals 36 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 24, 2014
players led to Rebecca Wilson going off with concussion. There was controversy as Centrals players called for a time-out while the Redbacks were allowed to score a goal. The Redbacks were leading 41-37 when Centrals sustained another injury. With only six players able to take the court, Centrals forfeited the rest of the game, with the Redbacks winning 41-37. Centrals coach Randy Pereria was angry after the game, believing the umpires should have called off the match at half-time because of the rain and slippery conditions. “We would have won the game if we didn’t have the three injuries,” he said. “They would have never got near us otherwise. “There was a meeting during the week about umpires calling off games when the conditions were bad. “The players are never going to say, ‘We are going to stop playing’.” Redbacks coach Danni Davidson didn’t agree with calls for the game to be abandoned,
saying she had played in worse conditions. Davidson said her side didn’t play well in the first three quarters. “We didn’t execute the game-plan,” she said. “There was too many long passes and we didn’t think about them. “We had to pick the right option with the ball.” She said the injury to Laird helped stop the Centrals’ flow. “Melton were fantastic and Mel is a fantastic defender,” she said. “The conditions did not suit our style of play and the Centrals capitalised on it.” For more photos, go to www.macedonranges. starweekly.com.au Tara Murray

Gisborne fires in big win By Tara Murray Gisborne made amends for failing to win a first quarter for a month with a resounding victory over Castlemaine in Bendigo Football League action on Saturday. Bulldogs coach Rod Sharp said the players showed an improved intensity in the first quarter. “It was a good first half of football for us,” he said. “Our best quarter was the last quarter. We showed some improvement later in the game when the concentration level of both sides had wavered. “As a coach, the main focus was more how we played not the final score.” With both teams coming off a week’s break, it was the Bulldogs who made all the early running with seven first-quarter goals. They continued to dominate for the rest of the game for a 20.23 (143)-5.4 (34) win. Sharp said rover Tom May and ruckman Tom Walsh were best on ground. “Tommy Walsh took a lot of marks around the ground and May’s efforts and work rate across the ground was really good,” he said. “He just kept getting it.” He said the week’s break had allowed the team to review the season so far. “We had a good review, in a leading teams sort of style, and spoke about the negatives and positives,” Sharp said. “We need to get some things right before finals. “People are saying that if we can keep our form we should finish in the top four. “If we can win our next two games we should be two to three games clear of fourth spot.” This week the Bulldogs play Maryborough and Kyneton faces Sandhurst.

Rangers suffer crushing defeat Kyneton District Soccer Club’s hopes of a top-two finish in FFV State League 5 west took a hit with a 7-0 loss at the hands of top side Spring Hills on Saturday. Lachlan McKenzie scored a double for the Kyneton side. In FFV Metropolitan League 5, the Rangers defeated Melbourne University Blue 1-0. Shaun Dukic was the only scorer for the game. SPORT MACEDONRANGES.STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
So close for plucky Lions By Tara Murray Saturday’s Ballarat Football League clash against Lake Wendouree was the one that got away for the Sunbury Lions. After dominating the first quarter at CE Brown Reserve everywhere but on the scoreboard, the Lions put in two terrible quarters to trail the Lakers by 22 points at three-quarter-time. Sunbury hit back in the final quarter to take the game up to the Lakers, but the Lions were unable to take the points, losing 8.8 (56) to 8.3 (51) in tricky conditions. Coach Rick Horwood said Sunbury had its chances to win in the final quarter. “We got off to a great start, kicked the first three goals and dominated the play but didn’t get the reward. “In the fourth quarter we made some crucial mistakes, which allowed them to get over the line.” Despite the loss, Horwood said the Lions could claim some positives. “We were four goals down at three-quartertime. Being that far down, in those conditions,
only to come back like that … we could have stolen the game. “We showed great character. While I’m disappointed to not get the four points, I’m not disappointed with the effort. “We play a good brand of football; we just need to play it consistently. The boys will learn a lot from this game.” Horwood said Sunbury’s younger players were largely responsible for the resurgence. “Again, Mitchell Conn and Jack Landt were among our top six players. “Adam Short played well in the backline. We moved him into the forward line in the last quarter and he was everywhere. “It was also really good to see our vicecaptain, Greg Hay, play his first game for the season after a car accident.” The Lions (5-3) are still fourth on the ladder and face Ballarat (6-2) on Saturday. “It was always going to be a tough three-game block for us,’’ Horwood said. ‘‘We play the next two games in Ballarat. It’s the halfway mark of the season and we still have to win at least half of our remaining games to make the finals.”

Jamie Cuffe will coach Sunbury Kangaroos for the rest of the Riddell District Football League season after Chris Meacham stood down to recover from injuries sustained in a farming accident. Club president Alan Walters told Star Weekly: “We want to give Chris every opportunity to come back next season in some capacity, so having Jamie coach for the rest of the season makes sense. Next year we may have both Jamie and Chris, or one or the other. We’ll wait and see.” Meacham and Cuffe were co-coaches when the Kangaroos won the 2012 RDFL premiership.

Six Riddell District Football League players will be part of an AFL Goldfields under-17 squad that will travel to North Queensland to take on rep sides from Cairns and Townsville/Mackay. The group of 26 players comes from the RDFL, Ballarat Football League, Maryborough Castlemaine District Football League and the Central Highlands league. RDFL players in the squad are Gisborne rookies Jack Reaper and Ryan Baker; others are Melton’s Connor Griffiths and Ryan Carter, Riddells Creek Juniors’ Tom Alkemade and Sunbury Lions’ Dean Muir.

Struggling Jets fight to keep their status Sunbury Jets women see themselves staying as a Big V division 1 side beyond this season. With only one win for the season, the Jets sit on the bottom of the table. Although there is no automatic relegation, the Jets’ place in the division isn’t assured and the decision on which level they play next season will be determined by the league. Coach Michael Thomas says the club will meet league officials next Tuesday. “We have a meeting with Big V to explain where we’re heading and what this season is about,” Thomas said. “We’re a lot better than the division 2 sides we beat in practice matches. “We believe we’re a division 1 side and have already started talking to Sunbury girls who are not playing for us about playing with us 38 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 24, 2014
next year. If we had won a few more of our close games we’d have had five wins and not be bottom of the ladder.” The Jets were again on the wrong end of another close game on Saturday night, eventually going down 81-69 against Craigieburn. They also lost to 87-54 to top-of-the-table Geelong Supercats on Sunday. “We had only seven players available this weekend, which made it hard,” Thomas said “Craigieburn is a very experienced side and we just weren’t close enough. Geelong have lost only two games for the season and we were only six points down at half-time. We ran out of legs in the second half. The game was closer than the score says.” Thomas believes his side will get a few more wins before the season is over.
“It’s a new group of players this season and we are getting better every time we go on court,” he said. “We seem to lack confidence, and when you’ve won only one game for the year, the other teams naturally have more of that confidence.” The Jets’ men lost 94-82 to Altona Gators at Altona Sports Stadium on Sunday. The visitors set themselves up for the win with a 38-14 second term, which turned a six-point deficit into a half-time lead. The Gators reduced the margin to 16 points in the third quarter before shooting 36 points to overrun the Jets. Gavin Mitchell top-scored for the Jets with 29. Tara Murray
Sunbury Lions suffered a heartbreaking one-point loss to Pascoe Vale in the Victorian Women’s Football League division 2 at Raeburn Reserve on Sunday. The Panthers started the better with 10 scoring shots to five in the first half to hold a five-point half-time lead. The Lions started to get into the game in the third term and kept the Panthers scoreless while kicking two goals of their own. In the final quarter, two goals to the Panthers was enough to see them home, 4.11 (35) to 5.4 (34). Natalie East and Natasha Hardy were best for the Lions.
EDFL
East Sunbury was always going to be up against it in the clash with Roxburgh Park and the final result was no surprise, the unbeaten Magpies winning 20.6 (126) to 3.9 (27). The Maggies came out of the blocks with seven goals to none in the first quarter and drew away. Dean Johnson was best player for Sunbury for the second straight week.
