Stolen property found in Kyneton

Graham Jasper and Damian Sandercock were all smiles as about 90 people shuffled through the doors for the launch of Kyneton’s eagerly awaited Piper + Wedge retail precinct last Wednesday. Developed by Mr Jasper and his wife Margaret, the $3.8 million shopping precinct on Piper Street will feature a mix of cafe, specialty food, homewares, gifts and fashion stores. Central will be The Emporium, a 300-square-metre open-plan space filled with eclectic goods from around the world. Mr Sandercock, owner of Piper Street Food Co, will open a retail shop and cooking school at the complex in September. Several other specialist retailers will soon be announced. David Bonnici

Kyneton police have recovered stolen goods worth “thousands of dollars”. A Woodend man, 27, was charged with possessing drugs, handling stolen goods and obtaining property by deception. He was bailed to appear at Kyneton Magistrates Court next month. A second Woodend man was arrested but released pending inquiries.

100% of your fire levy goes to our fire services Last year, the Victorian Government replaced the Fire Services Levy with a fairer system, as recommended by the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission. Now every property owner contributes a fair share to Victoria’s fire services, not just those with adequate insurance. Eligible pensioners and veterans also receive a $50 concession. 100 per cent of the fire levy goes to support greater funding of the operations of the Country Fire Authority and Metropolitan Fire Brigade. This includes firefighters, staff and volunteers, training, community education, protective clothing, vital lifesaving equipment and more than 1,200 fire stations and 2,300 trucks. Each year, Victoria’s firefighters attend more than 78,000 incidents, including road accidents and rescues, bush and grass fires, fires in the home, and workplace incidents. It’s a fairer fire levy.

Visiting this house is an uplifting experience in more ways than one. First, there’s the stairway to the entry balcony; second, there’s the view from here, over the town and rolling hills beyond. And then there’s the house itself which lifts the spirits by virtue of its wide, open spaces, big windows forming landscape ‘canvases’, and finishing touches such as stepped cornices and skirts, high ceilings and hardwood floorboards. The first room on display is a corker: a huge, grey-carpeted lounge room with windows on three sides, two sliders to the balcony, a grey feature wall, roller blinds (throughout), recessed wall cubes and an Ultimate wood heater. Across the entry hall, the main bedroom has a charcoal feature wall with niche, in-wall slider to twin fitted robes,

and a large en suite with oval spa and charcoal-and-white decor. Next is the fourth bedroom or study, with built-in storage. Two more bedrooms are down a carpeted hallway (with four storage closets), as is a separate toilet, laundry with lots of storage, and main bathroom, again decked out in charcoal and white. Floorboards span the kitchen and a meals zone which accesses an elevated, covered deck with glass balustrade – no barriers to views here. The kitchen has cabinets in a grey-and-white combo, a large walk-in pantry, soft-green tiled splashbacks, dishwasher and new underbench oven and electric cooktop. The floor plan is zoned well for the pell-mell of family life, with glazed doors between the meals area and a carpeted

rumpus room where there’s a grey feature wall and a leafy outlook. Out back, there are coloured-concrete walkways everywhere, a water tank, and a cubby house and basketball hoop as a kids’ entertainment hub. A back gate leads to a country lane, pittosporums screen the side fence and there’s a side gate for boat/ caravan access. Other perks are a newish split-system, ceiling fans, an under-house storage area and potential wine cellar accessed through a roller door, automatic window shutters at the back, and a remote-controlled garage. On a block of about 1800 square metres, this is a house tailor-made for a family wanting the good life in a rural town noted for its strong community spirit.

the signs are all there that spring is on its way. People start to move around springtime and many are tenants. There are many and varied reasons for people becoming tenants – self-employed, casual worker, contract work- for these individuals it is very difficult to gain bank finance. Then there are those who have been moved with work for one or two years and the expense in selling, buying and then selling again is just too great, renting is the perfect solution. As tenants start to move the demand for suitable properties increases and there simply are not enough homes to go around. We need more rental properties, we need more landlords! Romsey and Lancefield are excellent locations for investment. In both towns are to be found affordable properties which provide a good, solid financial return. We, at Chess, are more than happy to take the time to discuss the role of “landlord” with you. Our very experienced Property Manager, Julie Brown, is approachable and knowledgeable and is sure to set you on the right path. BUY NEW OR BUILD BIGGER?

SUNBURY/ MACEDON RANGES

Two words when it comes to real estate right NOw:

SELLERS MARKET!

Contact us to learn more about why NOw is the time to sell

No matter how spacious your home seemed when you bought it; there may come a day when you feel squeezed for space. Fortunately, you have multiple options if this happens to you. Buying new - The most obvious solution to this problem is buying a new, bigger home. If you’ve been paying off your mortgage, securing financing for a new home likely won’t be a problem due to the equity you would have built up in your existing property. Building Bigger - Of course, buying a new house isn’t your only option. You could always renovate your home to extend it and create more space. This may be more affordable and is especially popular with house owners who don’t want to leave the area they currently call home. However, you must also take into account certain factors. For instance, will your local council approve your renovations? Additionally, will these renovations serve you in the future, or are they only a temporary fix to your problem? Finally, depending on the work you want done, renovations aren’t always cheaper than buying. Weigh your options carefully when deciding which is the right choice for you.

OPEN fOR iNSPECTiON Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th August

WINTER PROPERTY MAINTENANCE When the winter months come around, it’s often tempting to hibernate and wait for the temperature to start rising again. However, there are plenty of maintenance tasks you can be getting on with to keep your home in top condition and less likely to suffer any problems. Clear your guttering. One area of the home that often gets neglected is the guttering. While it might not be the most attractive of tasks, clearing it of leaves and debris is essential. Have air conditioning units serviced. There’s no better time to have your air conditioning system serviced than during the winter. If there does happen to be something wrong with it, you can get it fixed without having to worry how you’ll cool yourselves down. Check the roof. Damaged roofs can cause all sorts of trouble when winter comes around, so don’t delay in giving yours a once over. This means looking for lost or damaged roof tiles and getting them fixed as soon as possible. Heavy rain and high winds can cause all sorts of problems if you don’t! Invest in insulation. If you often find yourselves huddling together for warmth when winter comes around, it might be time to install some insulation. There are so many different types available that there’s bound to be one that’s suited to your needs.

MOTOR MACEDONRANGES.STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

Holden breaks midsize hoodoo By David Bonnici Since the Torana, Holden has had a stream of unremarkable medium cars such as the Camira (remembered for all the wrong reasons), Apollo and Epica (Google it), which never enjoyed the popularity of the big and small cars that bookended the range. Holding up the middle these days is the Malibu, which isn’t a household name but offers Holden a decent bridge between the Cruze and Commodore, and is a unique addition to its class. That said, it’s not much smaller than the Commodore and accommodates the average family quite well. The interior seems well put together and when you turn the key, it comes alive with neon-like blue highlights that match the predominantly azure lighting on the dashboard. The Malibu has plenty of features that make it a standout in its price range. They include a MyLink system with Bluetooth connectivity, trip computer, rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, six airbags and electric handbrake. The top-of-the-range CDX model I drove also has rain-sensing windscreen wipers, leather interior with heated and electric front seats and excellent lumbar adjustment. There’s plenty of storage options inside the cabin and the boot space is huge – bigger than the VF Commodore. Outside, there’s no mistaking its relationship with the Commodore. But while the Australian car has more flowing lines, the Chevrolet-built Malibu looks a little more ’70s classic, with a blingy front and square tail lights. The front-wheel-drive Malibu is an elegant car to drive. It feels smooth in normal conditions. And while there’s not a heap of power under the bonnet, the 2.4-litre engine is more than adequate.

HOLDEN MALIBU CDX

The six-speed automatic gearbox does the job smoothly. It has a semi-automatic action which uses a couple of buttons on top of the gear knob. It isn’t as intuitive as other cars that let you move the gear stick like a manual lever. I couldn’t quite work out how to use it.

The Malibu isn’t the leader of the medium-car pack, but it certainly represents excellent value for its class. And unlike the Commodore, this is one Holden you can justify sticking a Chevy badge on.

SPORT MACEDONRANGES.STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

Macedon still in the mix By Tara Murray The fight for the last spot in the finals of the Riddell District Netball League will go down to the final round of the season. Macedon holds sixth spot, just ahead of Diggers Rest on percentage. Many thought Macedon would clinch the final place last weekend as the Cats had a bye while Burras had the tough task of facing third-placed Melton Centrals at Centrals’ home court, MacPherson Park . But Diggers Rest kept its finals hopes alive with a shock defeat of the Centrals, 52-44, on Saturday. Nothing separated the two teams for the first three quarters before the Burras shot away in the final term with 14 goals to the Centrals’ eight. Selina Chenhalls top-scored for the Burras with 26 goals. The battle for a finals spot doesn’t get any easier for the Burras who face top side Rupertswood, who are coming off a bye. Rupo will be looking for the win to secure the top spot as second-placed Riddell has the bye. The Cats face Romsey, which jumped to third following Centrals’ loss and its 59-21 win over Woodend Hesket. The Redbacks will enter the match in a battle to finish third with only percentage separating them, Centrals and fifth-placed Wallan. On paper, the Redbacks have the hardest job with the Centrals and Magpies playing the lowly placed Broadford and Rockbank. In the other match for the final round Woodend-Hesket faces Lancefield. The Tigers, who lost 50-40 to Wallan on Saturday, will finish the season in eighth spot. The Hawks will finish 10th or 11th.
