TECH TALK MACEDONRANGES.STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

Get connected By Rod Easdown Until a few years ago there were three basic building blocks in high-quality audio. Now there are four. The things you’ve always needed are an amplifier, a pair of speakers and a CD player. That’s a CD player, not a DVD or Blu-ray. Number four is a turntable. Yep, for playing records. If you’re scoffing, here are four sound reasons to get one: 1 \ They sound great and vinyl is not going away. 2 \ The software is cheap and abundant. You can buy records at garage sales for a few bucks. They’ll introduce you to music from times before digital manipulation. 3 \ They’re fun. Slide the record from the sleeve, place it on the platter, clean it, lower the tonearm and be rewarded with pure, luxuriant music. 4 \ Turntables look great and mark you as a perfectionist. So what do you need for fabulous sound? Start with the amplifier, a simple two-channel stereo unit with an inbuilt phono pre-amplifier for the turntable. I’d recommend Yamaha’s new AS201, a mighty performer for $400. Speakers are personal and it pays to listen around. I think the best sound-for-dollar equation is presented by Focal’s Chorus 705s at about $700 a pair, but then I have my ears and you have yours. You might prefer B&W 686s, also $700. CD player? It’s hard to beat Marantz’s CD5004 for $490. It’s built with all the traditional values of expensive Marantz offerings, and much of the technology. And so to turntables. Pro-Ject is the biggest

seller in Australia. Pro-Jects are so popular that the importer just paid $31,000 to airfreight a load of them in from Austria. They start at $429 for the Essential II, but the $499 RPM 1.3 Genie performs better and looks more interesting. Appearances matter because your turntable is always on display. It should be a conversation starter and this one is. If you want iPhone/iPod connectivity, budget another $180 on Yamaha’s YDS-12 universal dock. Throw in some quality speaker cable and you’re at $2300-odd all up for a system that sounds rich, full and fantastic – likely way better than anything you’ve ever heard. Final tip Shop around specialist dealers because these guys know more than you do. Buy your system there and they might even come out and hook it up for you for free.

GISBORNE 4 Jonathan Road, 3437 Hunt Real Estate: 5428 2544

Price: $975,000

A classic build on about 5943 square metres, this rendered house has an almost Georgian farmhouse feel but is modern to its back teeth. It has a lovely interior flow, is elegant and perfect for a family that loves entertaining and needs lots of bedrooms and plenty of outdoor space. Entry is directly into the slate-floored living hub, which has a wood heater for winter cosiness. Near a meals zone, the kitchen has an island servery bench, vinyl-wrap cabinets, display cabinet with lights, walk-in pantry, lots of drawers, an Asko dishwasher and Miele wall oven, electric cooktop and rangehood.

5

Private sale

The family room has a Clean Air wood heater set in a brick chimney, a ceiling-mounted split-system and a window seat along the length of two picture windows with great garden views. Ideal for guests, one bedroom with twin robes and en suite is off the meals area, while three more (with robes) are down a hallway. The main bedroom is huge, with a seat/storage set in a box bay window, and a door to the pergola area. It also has a fitted dressing room and an en suite with oval spa, large shower and vinyl-wrapped vanity unit topped with granite. Front gardens include a horseshoe driveway and a brick-paved courtyard

near the front door that features weeping apricots and a water fountain circled by box hedge. A brick-paved walkway winds around to the north-facing side pergola with pitched roof, ceiling fan, terracotta tiles and glimpses of Mount Macedon as a backdrop to landscaped gardens. Out back, there’s a rose garden defined by hedging. An American-style barn with mezzanine floor comes into its own as a man cave, workshop, hobbyist studio or a place to run a home business. This is a property stamped with class all the way. Carole Levy

A Quality Appointed Farmlet in Sedgwick

Real Estate Today Why Use a Real Estate Agent? A real estate agent is a professional home seller. Ask yourself this: if you needed to have a cavity filled would you go see an electrician? No? Then why would you allow a non-professional (yourself) to try and sell your most valuable asset? Real Estate Agents provide services that are designed to ease your home sale and to specifically protect your investment. One of the most valuable things that a real estate agent

can provide is marketing. Unlike selling by yourself, an agent has access to a huge variety of advertising

mediums. Typically the front line is an already established web presence. We at Dunlop Real Estate have a personal site that is designed to showcase our listings. This is where most homes we have for sale are first viewed by prospective buyers. Additional marketing is usually done through newspapers and other print media as well as a variety of flyers and info sheets that are available 24/7.

Agents also have wide access to a variety of data bases, ensuring that information on market performance, sale prices, rental rates and marketing information is up to date. Home selling is really all about positive exposure for the home in question and only a real estate agent can provide that degree of exposure. moving and selling the family home, so, let’s get “back to basics”. Selling is often an emotional process and it can be quite stressful unless the preparation is done. One of the most difficult decisions is choosing the right agent. The agent you choose is looking after your most valuable asset so make sure that they are “working for you”, that they know the local area well and that you feel comfortable with them. Remember also that “you get what you pay for” in other words “the cheapest agent is often NOT the best”. Prepare your property, “de-clutter”, tidy the garden, re-paint if required, replace worn cushions, have a new front door mat – in fact “put on a show for the buyers”. Choose a solicitor or conveyancer. A legal requirement when selling is that a Vendor Statement (Section 32) must be provided. There are excellent Solicitors and Conveyancers in the Sunbury, Macedon Ranges area and the agent you choose will be able to supply you with names and phone numbers. As spring approaches, and you think of selling, go back to basics.

3 HOME FACTORS TO CONSIDER When it comes to something as sizeable as a house, it’s important to make sure your purchase today will make sense tomorrow. After all, you may have found a sleek little loft in the inner city that calls your name, but if you’re married and looking to grow your family, you’ll need a home that can grow with you and accommodate a larger brood. Lot size - A big home is one thing, but having the potential for extensions and renovations to suit your family is important as well. When looking at properties, consider how the lot size could be used in the future to better serve your needs. Location -You’ll also want to future-proof your decision by choosing a property that is located near necessities for a growing family. These include schools, parks, grocery stores, hospitals and other amenities you may need to make use of. A little research into future infrastructure plans could give you a better idea of what the neighbourhood will look like in a few years’ time. Safety -The security of your loved ones both inside and outside the home will likely be on your mind. When selecting a property, think about how the home’s design could be dangerous to small children. You owe it to your family to find a safe, friendly neighbourhood in which to flourish.

FUTURE PROOF YOUR DOWNSIZING Downsizing into a smaller property can be an excellent way to save money and become the proud owner of a home that actually suits your current lifestyle. However, making the move from one home to another is a big commitment, and the last thing you want to do is buy a new home that might not fit your needs down the line. This is why it pays to future-proof your downsized property when buyinG, it’s all about ensuring the home you buy today will make sense for you tomorrow. And since most individuals tend to downsize when they’re approaching their older years and want to be done with the rigmarole of buying and selling, it’s even more vital to make sure your next property purchase will stand the test of time. Do I have the room I need? So your children have moved out and a smaller home may suit your needs better. Before you jump into a tiny condo, think about what your needs may be 10 years down the line. For instance, is there a chance one or more of your children may move back in with you temporarily? Do you often have friends or relatives stay over, necessitating the need for a guest room? What spaces matter most? Downsizing means trading in an unnecessarily large home for a smaller one, but you shouldn’t have to sacrifice the spaces that matter most to you. Are you a big fan of open plan kitchens? What about a dining room for entertaining? Answering these questions honestly will help you choose a property that you can be happy in for years to come.

“What’s the chance of a quad bike review?” our esteemed editor asked. Fairly slim, as it turns out. Quad bikes exist in a strange legal black hole in Victoria – you can buy them, but you can’t register them for recreational purposes. You can get a limited kind of road registration for them as a “special work vehicle”, but to do so you need to basically prove you’re a farmer with your own land. There are a few “quad bike experience” tours out there that allow you to have a crack at these strange vehicles, so I sign myself up for a two-and-a-half-hour session at Adrenalin Quad Bike Hire in Sale, Gippsland. For company, I recruit Cheffie, a two-wheeled tarmac terrorist, and my stoutly conservative father, John, who makes it clear in advance that he thinks “quad bikes are for environmental thugs who just want to tear up the soil”. We are greeted by Gary, who talks us through how to ride our hulking steeds in a manner that makes it clear he’s dealt with some resoundingly stupid individuals in his time. “Throttle’s over here at your right thumb. This is your front brake. Don’t use it, you’ll probably crash. This is your back brake, it’s been disconnected. This is your park brake, we cut that off as well; people were riding around with the brakes on all day and complaining that the bikes were too slow.” Cheffie is assigned a stocky Kawasaki 370, Dad takes the beefy Honda King Quad 500 and I’m given a Honda 400 festooned with so many cable ties that they almost look decorative. After a couple of laps around a test loop to make sure we’re not going to kill ourselves immediately, we set off. Our first few tracks are quite varied, from open smooth paddock tracks to deeply rutted backroads where, frankly, it’s amazing the quads don’t get bogged. In open corners, the best approach seems to be diving in way too fast, throwing your body into the turn, then wrenching the handlebars around and mashing the thumb throttle to spin the back out. After a brief slide, the chunky back tyres will grip and fire you out in roughly the right direction. This is most excellent fun. In the ruts, the best approach is more or less to let the bars move freely as they will, and mash the thumb throttle so the bike can just slide and steer itself. This is also excellent fun.

Cheffie on the mud flat with Adrenalin owner and tour guide, Gary. (Loz Blain)

Next we’re diving into the bush, dodging tea trees and ducking under branches on tight, technical trails that require a lot of attention. And then, suddenly, the track opens up and we see the main event – a giant, moist, virgin mud flat that spans several hectares. We stop to admire it under the Gippsland sky. We gas it out onto the mud, and as soon as each bike crosses the line onto the soggy stuff, traction becomes a distant memory. The quad bikes just sail gracefully across the surface, sending up giant rooster tails of chunky mud. Cheffie sails past at full lock sideways, engine bellowing and laughing like a madman despite travelling at a fairly sedate 20km/h or so. Dad floats past backwards in a gentle loop, looking slightly dazed. Gary cracks a rare grin. You certainly want to have your wheels pointed in the right direction when you hit the dry stuff again because, when the wheels grip, it’s a lot more abrupt than when sliding. I hit the dry at an angle moving at about 40km/h and immediately regret it, nearly pitching myself off the side. But I follow the golden rule – when in doubt, gas it out – and the bike sorts itself out quick smart. I enjoyed these odd machines far more than I expected. They’re enormously grunty, quite physical to ride, but lots of fun to stuff into tight corners or wrestle around a longer arc. www.adrenalinquadbikes.com

Glenn Hopkins has stood down as coach of Woodend-Hesket after three years at the helm of the Riddell District Football League club. Hopkins told Star Weekly he thought it was time to move on and look at other coaching opportunities. Meanwhile, Sunbury Lions will have a familiar face in the coaching box next year with the return of Chris Meacham, who stood down this season because of health issues.

Calder Cannons finished on top of the ladder with a win over Northern Knights in the final home-and-away round of the TAC Cup season. There wasn’t much between the teams in the first half, but then tall forwards Jayden Foster and Peter Wright took control and led the Cannons to a 14.10 (94) to 10.12 (72) win. Foster kicked six to finish as the league’s leading goalkicker, while Wright booted four. The Cannons now play North Ballarat Rebels in a qualifying final at Visy Park on Saturday.

Derby clash starts finals By Tara Murray As if the rivalry between Macedon Ranges’ two clubs, Gisborne and Kyneton, wasn’t already big enough, their A-grade sides will meet in the opening week of Bendigo Netball League finals. The Bulldogs, last season’s premiers, ended the home-and-away season second on the ladder, while newcomers the Tigers finished third. The Bulldogs have come out on top in the

two ‘derby’ clashes this season. The first meeting, in round three, saw the Bulldogs win 53-50. In the re-match, the Bulldogs, playing at home, got the jump in the first quarter, raced to an early lead and held on to win 43-32. Gisborne enters the finals on the back of a 44-38 loss to ladder leader Kangaroo Flat – only its third loss of the season. On the other side of the ledger, the Bulldogs are the only team to beat Kangaroo Flat this season.

Trentham won its final game of the season in the Maryborough Castlemaine District Football League, beating Talbot 14.17 (101) to 12.6 (78).

Kangaroo Flat also had a draw with the Tigers in Kyneton’s first A-grade season for five years after their return to the competition. Kyneton also goes into the finals after a loss, 46-40, to Maryborough on Saturday in something of a shock result. The Bulldogs’ B-grade side will play in an elimination final against Strathfieldsaye and the 17-and-under side will play Sandhurst in a qualifier. The Tigers’ B-grade reserves play an elimination final against South Bendigo.
