Sunbury police are urging motorists to use one-way anti-theft screws on their registration plates to prevent them from being stolen. Stolen plates account for about 45 per cent of theft from cars in Hume. The screws can be bought at major hardware stores.

Bowl up, seniors Bill Morison will don his whites on Sunday, and he’s encouraging others to do the same and join a seniors’ cricket team. Sunbury and Macedon Ranges over-60s cricket club will hold a ‘come-and-try’ day at Gisborne’s Sankey Reserve from 11am-4pm on Sunday, September 21. Practice is at Boardman Stadium in Sunbury on Wednesdays. The club competes in the Victorian over-60s cricket association against teams throughout

Melbourne, Geelong and Gippsland. Matches are played on Sundays at two-week intervals. To be eligible for the coming season, players have to be 60 or older on October 1. “You need a reasonable level of fitness and a willingness to play for fun and enjoyment rather than winning at all costs,” Bill says. Woodend Lions Club and Macedon Ranges Art Trail will team up to revive the Lions art show next year. The show was not held in 2014 because of insufficient entries. Barbara Ford and Souvenir
All show and lots of go By Sumeyya Ilanbey
Haylands Souvenir probably doesn’t remember his mother – he was orphaned at a young age – but he can sure remember all the tricks he’s since been taught. The handsome Clydesdale stallion will compete at next month’s Sunbury Agricultural Show, where he will be tested on his working ability. Souvenir’s owner Barbara Ford says Clydesdales were popular farm horses in
the early 20th century because of their good walking pace and ability to work all day covering large areas. Souvenir has won the supreme champion title at the Royal Melbourne Horse Show in Werribee and twice finished second at the Royal Melbourne Show. Mrs Ford’s relationship with horses stretches back to when she was a little girl, when her father regularly entered horses at the Royal Melbourne Horse Show. “We’ve become one big family with everyone
else out there,” Mrs Ford says. “I’ve met many people with the same interests as mine.” While her husband isn’t that keen on horses, Mrs Ford’s daughter Denia shares the passion. “[Clydesdales] are horses with personalities. They do get enjoyment out of breeding, working and handling,” Mrs Ford says. “And they’re intelligent horses, too.” The Sunbury Agricultural Show is at Sunbury Recreation Reserve from 8.30am-5pm on Saturday, October 11. For more details, visit www.sunburyshow.org.au.
More volunteers are needed to arm tourists with information so they can navigate their way around the Macedon Ranges. With the peak tourism season approaching, Macedon Ranges council is seeking more volunteers to join its visitor information centres in Woodend and Kyneton. Volunteers must commit to two weekend shifts each month. Council economic development and tourism manager Kylie Lethbridge said about 70 people already volunteered at the two centres. She encouraged people available on weekends to apply. “We’re growing and expanding the service to ensure we have good coverage at both of our centres,” Ms Lethbridge said. “We have the challenge that some of our volunteers are elderly, and in the colder months they just don’t live in the Macedon Ranges any more.” Macedon Ranges resident Chris Poynter retired four years ago. Having lived in the area for 21 years, Mr Poynter, 69, spends some of his time volunteering at the Kyneton Visitor Information Centre. “It’s a very enjoyable way of spending four hours a week, talking to people and enthusing about Kyneton and the region,” he said. Shifts are available from 9am-1pm or 1-5pm. For more details, phone Jane Duncan on 5422 6785 or email vic@ mrsc.vic.gov.au. Angela Valente

Price: $995,000
It shows when a house is designed by someone who really knows their stuff, as is the case with this glorious example of New England-inspired architecture that delivers an utterly contemporary interior with peerless attention to detail and dedication to artistry. There’s nothing stingy about this place: generosity rules. Lashings of spotted gum anchor an entry lobby (its sheer size belies that term), hallways and living hub; travertine floor tiles moor the main bathroom; stone adorns benches; skirts are deep, ceilings are square-set; wall niches and recesses are placed for maximum impact; mains gas hydronic heating and double-glazing are throughout; and beautifully decorated rooms – mainly in shades of grey – are liberal in terms of size and appointments.

Private Sale
The main bedroom is a large, restful haven with a defined study nook, a dressing room fitted out with bespoke cabinetry and a luxurious en suite with oval bath, bespoke vanity unit and walk-in shower. A hallway heads from the lobby, along which are three big bedrooms (with robes), and a powder room. The nearby main bathroom is a swank affair with a glazed door to a side deck, a clawfoot bath and walk-in shower. A bank of north-facing casement windows floods the step-down living hub (family and meals zones and separate rumpus room) with light and enhances the proportions of the space which is warmed by an inset Heat Master wood heater. The kitchen has opaque glass-fronted cupboards rising to the three-metre ceiling, and a huge island bench made

from reclaimed messmate. This use of timber, echoed in the frames of stacker doors accessing an elevated, partially covered deck, is a warm counterpoint to other ultra-modern elements. A Smeg 900mm cooker and rangehood under a bulkhead, Miele dishwasher, an integrated Blanco microwave, heaps of drawers, and splashback of handmade Spanish tiles are other kitchen keynotes. Outside, a long front driveway past eucalypts ends in space for parking numerous cars and, out back, there’s swathes of lawn dotted with English trees, a vegie patch and a shady sitting spot. In arguably the prettiest, leafiest enclave of Woodend, this property will have a legion of fans who demand the best. Carole Levy

ADVICE FOR FIRST HOME BUYERS First home buyers should take their time and do the research required to ensure they buy the best property they can for their hard-earned dollars. Keep in mind the following tips to maximise their chances of a successful outcome. When looking for a property – set a price and stick to it, Consider geographical elements such as proximity to schools, transport and amenities, Take into account condition of the property – does it need major repairs? Do you have money in the budget? Etc. Before purchasing, arrange for building and pest inspections by suitably qualified professionals and look at as many properties in your price range as you can. Saving for a property – getting together a deposit is all about discipline, establish a budget and work out what you spend, when, where and then see where you can make savings. Securing your finance – do your research and understand your options. The last piece of advice, but what I believe is the best, is to seek the assistance of an expert who has good local knowledge and has a trustworthy and reliable reputation.

MAKE YOUR RURAL WEEKENDER WORK There’s just something special about escaping the hustle and bustle of the city for some time in the country. Maybe it’s the peace and quiet, maybe it’s the fresh, clean air - whatever it is, it’s not hard to understand why some people have such an urge to invest in a rural weekender. However, as with any investment, it’s important to weigh your options and make sure your choice is in your best interest. With that in mind, here are a few tips on how to make sure your rural weekender works for your specific needs. How far is too far? The whole point of a rural weekender is to have a home in a spot away from the city. Then again, if the home is too far away, you might not have the opportunity to use it as much as you’d like. Hours of driving, not to mention dollars spent on petrol, could work against you and turn what’s supposed to be your sanctuary into a chore. How country do you want to go? Rural is one thing - being away from any form of civilisation is another entirely. Unless you’re prepared to be truly removed from all amenities when staying there, make sure your property is in an area that at least features the basics: a store, a petrol station, etc.
Everyone knows the basics of preparing a home for open inspection. Yes, cleaning is essential. No one wants to put down their hard-earned money for a pigsty, after all. And yes, it’s important to accentuate any unique features your home possesses, as this will set it apart from other properties up for sale. However, all too often, home sellers miss out on giving themselves an edge by forgetting the following three tips. Be on time - Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to clean and arrange the home. Show off your utilities - A home is made up of a lot more than just four walls and a roof. From air conditioning to fire places through to lighting fixtures and appliances, you should make sure people checking out your home understand that everything works superbly. Is it a chilly night out? Crank up the heat! A little dark in the living room? Brighten things up with your recessed lighting fixtures. Of course, this strategy depends on your fixtures and utilities functioning properly, so ensure they do before an inspection. Prepare the paperwork - Getting a look at your home may not be the only thing potential buyers are interested in. It can pay to have vital documents on hand, such as those pertaining to renovation history or recent valuations. The right paperwork can help put a buyer’s mind at ease and give you just the leg up you’ve been looking for. -

“Longview” Set on approximately 20 acres is this very private property that is surely the very best that Mother Nature has to offer. The architect designed 3 bedroom home, main with full ensuite & all with BIRs, also offers a large study, separate lounge, kitchen & dining areas as well as large verandas that will allow you to experience the majesty of your surroundings. The Adelaide stone walls lend the look of a bygone era to the outside whilst the cathedral ceilings, exotic timber features, quality fixtures & fittings are every bit the lifestyle of today. Beyond the tree-lined entrance this remarkable property boasts 2 dams & tanks (45,000 gallon capacity), a 30 x 10m shed as well as a state of the art horse infrastructure which also includes 30 x 60 mènage (approx), stables, shelters, enclosed round yard with lights & electric fencing. Just 20 minutes to Tullamarine Airport, 35 minutes to Melbourne’s CBD, walking distance to Clarkefield railway station & the local school, this is undoubtedly a property for the astute buyer.

Away from it all, close to home The Langham is a great escape, writes Charlene Macaulay
My personal favourites included sushi made to order, naan bread with M&Ms, Peking duck pancakes and churros with a chocolate dipping sauce. To drink, try the apple crumbletini. Back in the room, the bed lives up to its reputation: you just sink into the soft mattress and pillows and drift off into a peaceful night’s sleep. The Langham Melbourne is also home to a swimming pool, fitness centre, and the Aria Bar and Lounge, which is renowned for its Tiffin High Tea.

The Langham Melbourne is the perfect antidote for any Melburnian needing a quick break. The Langham, on Southbank, prides itself on offering modern yet timeless elegance. It’s this winning mix that has led me to return countless times for a luxurious overnight stay or indulgent weekend away. This time around we booked the ‘Away with the Fairies’ package, which included overnight accommodation for two, a full buffet dinner at Melba and breakfast the next morning, a late checkout of 2pm, and valet parking. We stayed in a Grand River Room on the 18th floor with a great view of the Yarra River and Flinders Street Station. The room itself is simply furnished with a king-size Langham ‘Blissful’ bed, desk and armchair with Ottoman. But it’s the small touches – from the luxury Chuan Spa amenity products in the bathroom and the copy of Alice in Wonderland in the bedside table drawer to the bottle of water placed in your car at checkout – that impress. The marble bathroom is comfortably set out and includes a separate shower and deep bathtub. If you’re celebrating a birthday or anniversary, be sure to let them know when you book and you will be rewarded with a slice of chocolate cake on arrival and a handwritten note congratulating you on your milestone. When dining at Melba, make sure you come with an appetite. The buffet offers a wide range of food stations with an international cuisine and serves up fresh seafood, cooked-to-order pasta, specially-made naan bread, a delicious array of dumplings, and desserts to die for.

Rupertswood’s under-18 girls are premiership winners. (Shawn Smits)
Rupo caps perfect run By Tara Murray Rupertswood won the first Riddell District Netball League under-18 competition at Romsey Park on Sunday. In the first of three grand finals for Rupo on the day, the under-18s were matched by Macedon in the first half before they stepped up a gear in the second. Rupo scored 18 second-half goals and restricted the Cats to only four to win 35-17. Bridget Macciota was best on court, while
Hayley Matthews scored 15 goals and Chloe Coffin 13. For the Cats, Tara Burnip was the main scorer with 11 goals. The win capped off a perfect season for Rupo, who went through the season unbeaten. In the C-grade grand final, Romsey beat Rupo 23-16. At three-quarter time it looked as if the game would go down to the wire as the Redbacks led by just one goal. But eight goals to two in the last quarter gave

Romsey the win, with league MVP Barbara-Lee Dobson the best shooter on court with 15 goals. The B-grade grand final was a repeat of the under-18s, with Rupo and the Cats doing battle. And Rupo triumphed again, overcoming a slow start to win 29-18. Only four goals separated the two teams at half-time, before Rupo pulled away in the second half. Ten days ago, Romsey captain Steve Burlak didn’t think he would be playing in the RDFL grand final, let alone winning a premiership. After being reported for a bump in the Redbacks’ semi-final win against Riddell, the defender was given a two-game suspension with one match suspended – enough for him to miss the grand final. “I thought it was a little unfair – I thought I didn’t deserve to get reported for that,” he said. “With the way the tribunal works, I wasn’t that confident I would get off. “The first couple of nights I didn’t really sleep, thinking I was going to miss out on the grand final.” The Redbacks appealed the decision but had to wait a week for the hearing. The suspension was eventually thrown out and Burlak was free to play. “I’m a little exhausted from all that – it’s sort of hard to celebrate too much because of it,’’ he said. ‘‘The emotional exhaustion has set in.” Burlak’s availability was a massive boost for the Redbacks as they looked to control Diggers Rest’s tall timber. Midfielder Shaun Austin missed the flag win after hurting his hamstring in the semi-final. Coach Dean Helmers made special mention of Austin post game. “Unfortunately he didn’t come up. “It’s really disappointing for him. I’m sure the boys will get around him.”
