Avenue status ‘raised’ By Angela Valente Ninety-six years after Trentham’s Avenue of Honour was planted, a ceremony will be held for its dedication. In 1918, Trentham residents planted trees, mainly elms, along Cosmo Road and Bridge Street to commemorate World War I enlistments from the area. According to Trentham and District Historical Society member Jan Robertson, research indicates the trees were planted by local people, while money was raised by the community. “The council, then the Kyneton shire, gave pound for pound towards the financing of the avenue,” she said. “But a lack of funds at the time prevented the avenue being completed. It’s a real community memorial. “Because it was never finished, there was never a formal dedication.” An honour board installed in the Mechanics’ Institute lists the names of 93 people from the area who fought in World War I. Trees were planted in recognition of the people listed. The formal dedication of the avenue will be held next month. “Being quite close to Remembrance Day, we thought it tied in well and coming into the first centenary of World War I will … raise community awareness of the history of these trees that make up the avenue,” Mrs Robertson said. “My driving force is raising the profile and keeping the social history alive for future generations.” Historian, author and researcher Michael Taffe will speak at the dedication ceremony, which will be held from 11.30am on November 1 at the corner of Cosmo Road and High Street in Trentham.

The clean-up is continuing at the Riddells Creek Christmas tree farm after fire devastated the property in February. Corrections Minister Edward O’Donohue visited the farm last week, praising the work of the crews from Loddon Prison who helped fell, cut and stack about 1300 Christmas trees. “The fires had a devastating impact, destroying 10,000 trees at the Christmas tree farm and causing $250,000 of damage, so it is good that the prisoners are able to give back to the community in this practical way,” he said. “It’s fantastic to see these projects delivering great outcomes for local communities and enabling offenders to develop skills.” Loddon Prison and Macedon Ranges council formed a partnership to enable prisoners to help in the clean-up of bushfire-affected areas. Loddon Prison, a campus-style prison within a secure perimeter, provides accommodation for 64 minimum-security and 336 mediumsecurity prisoners. Through the partnership, about 12 prisoners gained a certificate II in horticulture. Macedon Ranges councillor Graham Hackett, who owns the Christmas tree farm, said there was a lot more work to be done. “Every production tree we had was burnt and we lost about 10 kilometres of piping,” he said. Brothers Neville and Harold Loughrane, Belinda Walsh Flenley and Ethel Patton – Trentham relatives of World War I servicemen commemorated by the Avenue of Honour. (Joe Mastroianni)

Sunbury showcases rural roots By Matt Crossman Horses, sheep and cows, delicious produce, showbags and rides, plus many dedicated volunteers, made sure about 12,000 people had plenty to see and do at this year’s Sunbury Agricultural Show. Show committee president Tony McMahon said Saturday’s event at the town’s recreation reserve was a great success, with the standard of entries exceptional. ‘’Not just the numbers but the quality throughout the show … everything was just really impressive,’’ he said. ‘’One thing that stood out to me in the [arts] pavilion was a tapestry. “It was a three-panel reproduction of Tom Roberts’ early settlers series. It was just absolutely outstanding; it looked like a print.’’ Mr McMahon said besides the fun of sideshow alley, the show’s pet parade and agricultural displays were tremendously popular. ‘’A lot of kids may have had grandparents on a farm, but to see the high-tech equipment that is used up close, and to touch it, is something else.’’ Mr McMahon praised the efforts of the show’s 50-plus volunteers who ensured a busy program went to plan. ‘’For the first time we had twilight equestrian events, so there were horses going around until after 6pm,’’ he said. ‘’It’s just amazing how everyone just puts in to get the job done.’’ For more pictures, visit www. sunbury.starweekly.com.au.

Building a safer Victoria in bushfire areas The Victorian Government is actively implementing a range of powerline safety measures as part of its commitment to fully implement all 67 recommendations made by the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission. The Powerline Bushfire Safety Program is a $750 million 10-year program responsible for reducing the risk of Victorian powerlines causing bushfires. Major works being delivered to safeguard the Macedon Ranges community before the upcoming fire season include: > 10 privately owned bare-wire powerlines replaced with safer underground cabling,

equating to 2.4km of safer powerlines in your community. > 7 residential care facilities provided with back-up generators, supporting the critical

power needs of 439 vulnerable local residents during times of extreme weather events. These works are giving Victoria the most bushfire safe power network in the country. For more information visit energyandresources.vic.gov.au/powerlines

but didn’t get a chance to ignite their passion at their Melbourne home with full-time work, four kids and a small back yard. Five-or-so years after those circumstances changed, they have developed a large cottage garden enclosed by dry stone walls, a circular vegetable garden with roses and a number of rockeries with native plants. The driveway is flanked with mature eucalypts and maples. After buying the farm they sat on it for a year before making additions. “We had a great first year with the vegie garden before the rabbits arrived in subsequent years.” The garden, at 162 Hesket Boundary Road, will be open from 10am-4.30pm on Saturday and Sunday, October 18-19. Admission is $8 and entry for people under 18 is free. For more details, visit www.opengarden.org.au.

After moving from Melbourne to the Macedon Ranges in 2008, Tom and Deborah Mullins found their dream retreat in Hesket. Their 1.2-hectare garden, full of mature trees including eucalypts, maples and camellias, rhododendrons, azaleas and perennials, will be open this weekend as a fundraiser for the Hesket Fire Brigade. On the north face of Mount Macedon, the garden has views across the valley to the Cobaw Ranges. The house and garden join a 4-hectare forest that leads to a creek. Mrs Mullins says that through spring the garden is “glorious”. “We’ve had big fires in this area and the Hesket CFA is only a small organisation, we thought they would benefit from this fundraiser,” she said. hair day Pipers Creek her muse Woodend artist Robyn Clarke says painting and clay work are equal pathways to artistic expression and each is relaxing and refreshing. But painting landscapes lets her memory and imagination run free, while her ceramics are symbols of the “folds of landscapes”. “They allow the flight of memory and emotions as I look at the ever-changing weather-face of nature,” she says. “The textures of the earth, sky, sun, sleet and rain are like painterly surfaces upon slow-changing forms.” Mrs Clarke, who uses acrylic and mixed media, says art is a fundamental part of her life.

She will exhibit her landscapes, A Strange and Antique Land, at Woodbine Gallery in Malmsbury. Her inspiration is drawn from scenery around Pipers Creek, near Kyneton, Carlsruhe and Mount Macedon. The exhibition at the gallery, 2644 Daylesford Road, will be opened on Sunday, November 9, by former journalist and art critic Paul Taylor. It will stay open, Fridays to Mondays, until December 7. Hemphill, a member of the Macedon Ranges Netball Association (MRNA) committee for six years, was a major player in the push to get a netball complex built in New Gisborne. “We get the keys this weekend and are holding our first tournament at the complex on Sunday,” Hemphill said last week. “We normally hold the (MRNA) tournament at Geelong, so it’s good to finally hold it at our home courts. There’s 550 girls coming to play.” It was Hemphill’s role in ensuring the complex eventuated that led to the association nominating her for the award. She was named as its winner at Netball Victoria’s annual gala awards earlier this month. “It was a great honour,” she said. “I did what I did to help grow netball in the Macedon Ranges.” According to the association’s nomination: “MRNA would not be where it is today if it wasn’t for Carmen Hemphill. “Of course, she has not done all of this alone … but it is Carmen’s commitment, indefatigable energy and leadership that has driven these others to assist in developing our game and make it more accessible in the wider local area.” “Gisborne Netball has been lobbying for almost 20 years to improve our facilities and advance the profile and accessibility of netball in the Macedon Ranges. “She has led her team to lobby governments

at all three levels, apply for grants, seek advice from Netball Victoria and Netball Australia, attend and instigate umpteen meetings to inform the community, and work with those in power who could make the decisions we needed made.” Hemphill’s involvement in netball began when she was seven, and it continues despite her stepping down from the MRNA committee. “I needed a knee reconstruction and the

doctor told me I couldn’t play any more,” she said. “I then started coaching at my local club [the Rebels] and became rep co-ordinator for the MRNA. “From 2010-12, I was president of the MRNA and knew I had to stick around until we had the complex. “I’m now president of the Rebels and have been coaching a side this year. “I can never get away from netball and the association.”

A Sunbury man who crashed his car into a power pole and brought down power lines has been fined and had his driver’s licence cancelled for four years. Broadmeadows Magistrates Court heard Courtney Seidel, 35, was driving to a friend’s house on June 27 when he tried to perform a U-turn in Kalkallo. He failed to make the turn and instead crashed his car into a power pole, tearing down power lines. Prosecutor, Leading Senior Constable Ashley McCulloch said Seidel refused to undergo a preliminary breath test at the scene but told police he had had “a couple of glasses” before driving. Seidel was charged with refusing to undergo a preliminary breath test and for carelessly driving a motor vehicle. He pleaded guilty in court on October 6. Seidel’s Liraz Jedwab, of Victorian Legal Aid, told the court Seidel had suffered from paranoid schizophrenia since 2000 and was the sole carer for his 12-year-old son. “He’s a family man,” Mr Jedwab said. “He does the Men’s Shed with his dad three days a week and sees his doctor fortnightly.” He said Seidel received a disability pension and carer’s allowance. Deputy chief magistrate Robert Kumar fined Seidel $1000, to be paid in instalments of $100 starting on December 1. Seidel is disqualified from driving in Victoria for four years. Lexi Cottee

A wonderful lifestyle property of about 16.18 hectares of quality grazing country with excellent farm infrastructure, this one has stunning views of the Macedon and Cobaw ranges and a comfortable family home. Four large bedrooms include the main with walk-in wardrobe and sleek en suite, and there’s a large modern main bathroom, fully tiled and with a spa. Entry is into a foyer, beyond which is a big lounge-dining room. Slate floor tiles anchor family (with wood heater) and casual dining rooms, and a kitchen which has a breakfast bar and gas cooker. Verandahs on three sides provide plenty of options to move with the sun when relaxing and entertaining. Presently used for breeding horses, the property has 11 paddocks, electric fences, four yards, five shelters, a four-bay machinery shed, four stables with feed and tack areas, a round yard and cattle yards. A quality bore and two dams provide water for stock and the very appealing surrounding gardens. Between Woodend and Kyneton, this enviable place is within minutes of Newham General Store’s fine food and coffee and a primary school.

On more than 0.4 hectares in a blue-chip enclave of town, this timeless family home is set amid arguably the prettiest gardens in the area and has the golf club and village shops on the doorstep. Of the four large bedrooms, the main has twin wardrobes-cum-dressing rooms and en suite. Another also has an en suite and private entry, making it great for guests or extended family; two others share a main bathroom. Lounge and dining rooms are bisected by an island brick wall with inset fireplace and shelves; this adjoins the galley-style kitchen with wall oven, electric cooktop and dishwasher. A separate, carpeted rumpus/family room has built-in cabinetry and a copper-hooded fireplace, and there’s a separate study. Tucked away in gardens with a gorgeous display of English plants and trees, rock walls, rustic steps and walkways, a lovely timber cottage/studio has kitchen cabinets and glossy floorboards under a vaulted ceiling. Other keynotes of this lovely property are gas ducted and slab heating, a split-system, a large covered outdoor area and a triple garage.

Light, bright and modern to its back teeth, this immaculate residence promises a hassle-free move-in day and a chance to kick back and enjoy a place where everything’s done and dusted, inside and out. Along with three bedrooms (the main has a walk-in robe and en suite with tub and twin vanity basins), there are an open lounge room near the entry, and a large family-meals area around a classy kitchen. An island breakfast bar under red feature pendants, glass splashback, two-door pantry, dishwasher and 900mm cooker deliver all the kitchen must-haves. All fittings are top-notch, including locally made soft furnishings and remote-controlled drapes in the family room. Evaporative cooling, zoned gas ducted heating and a solar hot water service are extras. Bifold doors provide fantastic integration with the covered outdoor area. The property has a garden shed, 9000-litre water tank, side access to the backyard and a 6x6-metre remote-controlled garage.

Entertain in style this summer in the backyard of this impressive property. A solar-heated in-ground pool and pergola with paving underfoot are the ideal place for a barbie with the family or friends, while established low-maintenance gardens further enhance the surrounds. Out the front, there’s a double garage and ample off-street parking space. Inside, there are three bedrooms (two with built-in wardrobes and the main with walk-through robe and en suite); a bathroom with spa; carpeted lounge room; family-meals zone with wood heater, slate-tiled floor and vaulted timber-lined ceiling; and a kitchen with an abundance of timber cupboards and a dishwasher. Ceiling fans are included, inside and out. Families with young children will fit in well here with childcare, Killara and Sunbury West Primary schools, St Anne’s Catholic Primary school and The Common nearby. Sunbury Square shopping centre is a short drive away.

living areas. An island wall ahead conceals a recessed wrought-iron wine storage spot. On the right, a sitting room opens to a large study and has a wood heater and ceiling fan. Opposite, there’s a family-meals area abutting the kitchen which has new stone benches atop cabinets with soft-green distressed paintwork, a step-in pantry, Bosch dishwasher and a Blanco 900mm cooker with stainless-steel splashback. Double doors open from the family hub to a huge rumpus room with an Ultimate wood heater, four big storage closets concealing the TV and games ports, and a door to the back verandah.

A carpeted hall (with heatbank and three closets) heads from here to four bedrooms, each with ceiling fan and robes; one has a tiled floor and could serve as a playroom. A powder room is nearby, as is a large bathroom with a Tuscan-style decor. The main bedroom, at the opposite end of the house, is massive. It has a terracotta-tiled floor, a set of five mirrored robes, and gorgeous glass-paned double doors to an en suite that demands champagne in the clawfoot bath; a swank walk-in shower, on-trend tiling and a marble-topped period-style vanity unit make this room something special.

Along with a fenced and lavender/ photinia-hedged in-ground, solar-heated salt-chlorinated swimming pool, the vast backyard has attractive gardens, herb patches, well-designed vegie boxes, four big water tanks (town water is connected), and a rustic timber shed attached to an open bay that serves as a spot to gather for a barbecue. Backing onto the golf course (13th hole in sight) which provides a great spot to walk the dog, this is a property that a family will fall in love with. Carole Levy

THROW A PERFECT BBQ THIS WEEKEND

Sat 11.30-12.00pm 38 Wicket St, Sunbury

Barbecue season! There’s nothing quite like enjoying the great outdoors in your own backyard, surrounded by family, friends and the sweet smell of roasting food. While BBQs are generally casual affairs, it’s also a good idea to run through a few guidelines to ensure you have the perfect time out in the sun. Be safe -First and foremost, if you’re working with an open flame, it’s essential to do so in an open area away from people and flammable objects. Even if you’re using a gas grill, cooking in an enclosed space could lead to excessive carbon monoxide. It’s not a bad idea to have a fire extinguisher on hand just in case. It’s also a good idea to always check your grill’s propane tank before each use if it has one. Be clean- A dirty grill can ruin food and lead to leftover grease and fat being ignited, so it’s worth it to give your cooking surface a good scrub down after each use. Be fun- BBQs are the perfect time for family fun and games. After all, what’s the point of eating outside if you’re just going to sit around the table like you do indoors! Feel free to bring out the Frisbee or start a sack race. However, keep in mind that games (and guests who have had one too many adult beverages) should be kept away from the grill. As most grill masters know, any time you get to spend time with your loved ones in a safe, delicious and fun-filled environment, it qualifies as the perfect BBQ.

CLEANING YOUR DRIVEWAY Most homeowners are keen to keep their properties looking great, but this attention to detail often finds itself missing on home exteriors.A clean carpet and sparkling kitchen are all well and good, but the outside of your home - particularly the front - is generally the first thing people see. With this in mind, front porches, yards and driveways are all an important part of keeping your home in good condition. Dealing with driveways - Front yards may draw the eye, but a dirty driveway can ruin even the most aesthetically pleasing property. Whether you have a concrete driveway or a cobblestoned entrance to your garage, it’s more than likely your driveway must contend with a lot of wear and tear. Not only are vehicles driven over it multiple times a day, it is also exposed to the elements, including rain, wind and sun. And, finally, the all too common oil stain is the bane of every driveway’s existence. Fortunately, cleaning your driveway is a simple matter of making time and using the proper methods. Seeking supplies- Depending on how dirty your driveway is, the supplies you need may vary. Generally speaking, a hardy scrub brush, broom suitable for outdoor use, soap, water and high pressure hose are all good to have on hand. Removing stains- Deepseated stains, such as those caused by oil, may require a little extra elbow grease. One popular method for stain removal is spreading kitty litter over the offending stain, letting it absorb the stain and then sweeping it up.This process may need to be repeated multiple times in order to remove the stain fully.

the same importance in a property bought for investment. The basic idea is to generate a future income and to maximise capital gains, i.e. the worth of the property in the future compared with its value today. So the aim is to find such property in areas which have a history of good letting prospects and capital growth. Naturally, the condition of the property must also be considered. It pays to consult an expert in investment property very early in the action. He or she will have the facts and figures to show you what has gone on previously, as well as being able to provide expert advice on what is likely to happen. Due to our experience and our involvement, as agents, in property sales we are intimately aware of the market: what's available and what's worthwhile. And as we have considerable experience in property management we are able to offer you a complete management solution for your investment. We can advise you in all aspects of real estate, so if we can assist you in any way, feel free to contact me, John Dunlop on 9744 2555 or call into our friendly offices in Sunbury or Gisborne for a chat.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council has contracted Tree Top Tower Hire Pty Ltd to manage its Vegetation Maintenance Program. As part of this program the street trees and powerlines are inspected regularly to ensure an uninterrupted power supply and a fire safe environment. Damage to items such as computers, televisions, video recorders, microwave ovens and other appliances containing electronics can also arise if trees contacting powerlines cause electricity supply interruptions. All vegetation maintenance work is required to be carried out in compliance with the Electricity Safety Act 2010 Electric Line Clearance. These regulations stipulate a minimum safe clearance between trees and power-lines, plus a re-growth space, which will allow for re-growth of vegetation between scheduled trims. We have identified trees’ within the Kyneton and Gisborne townships that require trimming to ensure the safe distances are maintained. The tree works in your area will be carried out over the next three weeks and will be conducted in accordance with the Australian Standard for Pruning of Amenity Trees AS 4373 - 2007 This service will be undertaken only by trained and qualified tree clearing technicians. REMOVAL OF DEBRIS Debris from the clearing activity will be removed as soon as possible. If you have any inquiries regarding the above please contact Mark Doering/Shane Power at the Macedon Ranges Shire Council on 5421 0800. Jason Scholten Tree Top Tower Hire 1158580-DJ42-14

Lancefield hits back

SPORT

Sport shorts Golf

By Tara Murray

Pat Chisholm was the runaway winner of Romsey Golf Club’s stroke competition on Saturday. In top conditions, it was Chisholm that broke away from the pack, taking hold of the course and recording a good score despite having four putts that only just failed to drop. Chisholm won from Anthony Lakey and Rob Rea.

Lancefield got its first Central Highlands Bowling Division win on Saturday. After losing to Romsey in division 1’s opening round, Lancefield bounced back with a 103-83 win over Gisborne. Lancefield didn’t have it all its own way, with Gisborne winning two of the rinks. It was Lancefield’s Michael Linehan-led rink that proved to be the major difference as it won by 23 shots, 37-14. Gisborne and Trentham are winless after the opening two rounds. Kyneton Golf remains unbeaten after defeating Trentham, 101-92. Golf won three of the four rinks to walk away with 16 of the 18 points on offer. Bacchus Marsh is the only other undefeated team remaining after it beat Romsey 108-87. Bacchus Marsh won the first three rinks to take control of the match. The fourth match-up of the round ended up being a close one, with Kyneton winning by three shots over Woodend. Kyneton won two of the rinks by margins of seven and eight which was enough to get the win and 14 points. In division 2, Bacchus Marsh, Diggers Rest, Woodend, Kyneton Blue and Kyneton Golf were the winners. Kyneton Blues sits atop the division 2 ladder, having won its two matches by a total of 81 shots. This week in division 1, Romsey faces Gisborne, Bacchus Marsh takes on Woodend, Lancefield faces Trentham, and Kyneton and Kyneton Golf will be in derby mode.

Softball

Sunbury softball got under way on Saturday with the Panthers and Goonawarriors in winning form in men’s A grade. The Panthers proved too strong for the Knights, winning 19-8, while Goonawarriors defeated the Sharks 15-6. In women’s A-grade, the Wildcats defeated the Knights 10-6 and Panthers (1) won a thriller against Pink Panthers 10-9. In the under-12s, Dark Knights beat Panthers 13-3 and White Knights won 6-5 over the Sharks. In under-16s, Knights defeated the Panthers 13-6.

Bendigo FL

Kyneton Football Club has already made some big signing for its 2015 Bendigo Football League campaign. After signing former Gold Coast player Alik Magin, who played with Bendigo Gold in the VFL last season, the Tigers also signed his brother, Rhys Magin. Rhys, who was on Essendon’s list at one stage, played for Avondale Heights in the Essendon District Football League this year. The Tigers have also signed Whittlesea centre-half forward Mitch Scholard.

Lancefield’s Dave Safstrom goes for a shot. (Shawn Smits)
