Rising costs ‘a hit to families’ By Matt Crossman The rising cost of living is making life harder for families that are already finding the going tough, according to a Sunbury-based relief organisation. CareWorks SunRanges manager Nicky Gallus said changes to family payments and other welfare cuts in this year’s federal budget would be another hit to the finances of single and low-income households. This comes after new University of Canberra modelling showed how residents of the McEwen electorate would be affected by budget cuts. The research revealed the average family in Sunbury South would be $614 a year worse off by 2017-18, followed by Sunbury ($534), Romsey ($410), Gisborne ($329) and Macedon ($214). The modelling looked at changes to families’ disposable incomes brought about by moves such as the indexation of pensions and the removal of family payments. Ms Gallus said the Sunbury charity, which received no government funding, had experienced a surge in the number of families seeking food parcels as they struggled to deal with soaring utilities bills. ‘‘[The government] hasn’t even made the cuts yet, so it’s only going to make things tougher,’’ she said. ‘‘Any loss [in welfare payments] means our job just gets harder.’’ Ms Gallus said CareWorks provided about 180 food parcels to struggling families in
July. That number rose to 227 in September. ‘‘We’ve had a lot more people come in for help … they’re doing it because they are struggling to pay for household bills,’ Ms Gallus said. McEwen Labor MP Rob Mitchell said the research released last week showed McEwen taxpayers would have to do some of the heaviest lifting.

‘‘The modelling shows it’s the less well-off electorates that are hurt most by the budget,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s putting more pressure on pensioners, more pressure on low and middle-income families and more pressure on our young people.’’ But a spokesman for Treasurer Joe Hockey said family payments were just part of the support the government provided to help families with the cost of raising children. ‘‘Each year, the government spends billions of dollars on healthcare, childcare and other forms of assistance also available for families,’’ he said. The spokesman said lower-income families would still receive, on average, more than $12,000 a year in government payments in 2016-17. with The Age

Caring brings out best The positive effect on her own children was among the things that surprised Riddells Creek’s Natalie Hayes after she became a foster carer. Ms Hayes, a stay-at-home mother who has been a foster mum through Anglicare Victoria for the past 20 months, said her daughter Brittany, 17, and son Nicholas, 9, have always been thoughtful kids, but becoming elder siblings to a number of babies and younger children has made them more compassionate and grateful. ‘‘They’ve really embraced it; they’ve loved every child we’ve taken on,’’ she said. Ms Hayes said becoming a foster carer had been at the back of her mind for about 20 years. And she and her husband, Kevin, have no regrets about signing on.
‘‘We just want to provide a safe, happy environment for these kids, who desperately need it,’’ she said. The family has cared for six children so far. The shortest placement was 10 weeks, while the longest was five months. But letting go can be tough. ‘‘It’s hard to say goodbye, but you realise there are more kids who need your help.’’ Anglicare will hold an information night at St Marys Anglican Church in Sunbury next Monday at 7pm. There is a shortage of carers in the area. Carers can be married, single or retired, and may even work full-time. Full training and 24-hour support is provided. For more details, phone 9301 5200.

Law gets tough on fine dodgers By Matt Crossman
Treading upper deck a tradition A Sunbury sailor whose great-grandfather fought with the 9th Light Horse in Gallipoli says he’s overjoyed to also have the chance to serve his country. Able Seaman boatswain Aaron Morgan has taken part in two border protection operations and a series of off-shore exercises. Speaking from on board HMAS Stuart, on exercises in Singapore and the South China Sea, he says variety truly is the spice of his life in the navy. ‘‘One minute I could be sitting in the mess, and then 10 minutes later I could be preparing to board a vessel,’’ Able Seaman Morgan says. He says his role as a small arms and seamanship expert has given him the opportunity to develop a swag of skills. ‘‘I look after the weapons and am a subject matter expert for the boats, anchoring and refuelling at sea. ‘‘I’m also a member of the boarding party and my ancillary roles include … firefighting and leak-stop repairs. My job overlaps in lots of different areas.’’ Able Seaman Morgan, whose grandfather also served the nation in the navy in World War II, says he loves being able to tread the boards of the ship and work in the sea air. ‘‘I enjoy being on the upper decks more than anything else.’’

The Sheriff’s Office has dobbed them in … 2637 Macedon Ranges residents are responsible for almost 17,000 of the shire’s outstanding fines. Figures for 2013-14, released last week, reveal the 16,833 outstanding fines are worth more than $6.38 million. The Sheriff of Victoria, Brendan Facey, warned that his office was getting tough on serial fine evaders. ‘‘Unfortunately, some people still aren’t getting the message that you can’t hide from unpaid fines,’’ he said, warning that more people were being arrested and faced the possibility of serious consequences, including jail. ‘‘This action is typically taken against people who are serially evading their fines, racking up tolling, speeding and parking infringements at the cost of the public. ‘‘It’s frustrating that people are not getting the message that paying your fines is not optional.’’ In neighbouring Hume, including Sunbury, 29,247 people were responsible for 255,365 outstanding fines worth $92.46 million. Statewide, the value of more than four million outstanding fines in 2013-14 was $1.53 billion. The state government is planning to introduce an integrated system to track and collect fines for infringements, victim compensation orders and civil judgement debts. Mr Facey said the changes would give sheriffs more ability to track down people racking up huge debts. ‘‘Too many people are letting their fines get out of control,’’ he said. ‘‘Getting help with your fines is easy. Ignoring them will lead to action from the Sheriff’s Office.’’ To track and pay outstanding fines, visit www.fines.vic.gov.au.

Come to the cabaret Two Sunbury choirs will take music-lovers on a journey through song next week, performing genres from Broadway tunes and pop classics to current top-40 hits during a cabaret with a difference. Adam Przewlocki, director of Sunbury-based entertainment company ArtsFusion, says the award-winning talents of male and female pop choir SunVox and the Cantare girls choir will include something to suit all tastes at the October 25 cabaret. ‘‘We’re doing a huge medley of hits from the musical Wicked – that’s likely to be a real showstopper,’’ he says. ‘‘There will also be a gospel bracket. Our junior choir, Sunbury Kidz, will make a guest appearance as well.’’ The cabaret is at Flashdance Performing Arts, 3 Commerce Court, Sunbury, from 7pm. Tickets cost $30 ($80 for a family). Building a safer Victoria in bushfire areas The Victorian Government is actively implementing a range of powerline safety measures as part of its commitment to fully implement all 67 recommendations made by the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission. The Powerline Bushfire Safety Program is a $750 million 10-year program responsible for reducing the risk of Victorian powerlines causing bushfires. Major works being delivered to safeguard the Macedon Ranges community before the upcoming fire season include: > 10 privately owned bare-wire powerlines replaced with safer underground cabling,
equating to 2.4km of safer powerlines in your community. > 7 residential care facilities provided with back-up generators, supporting the critical
power needs of 439 vulnerable local residents during times of extreme weather events. These works are giving Victoria the most bushfire safe power network in the country. For more information visit energyandresources.vic.gov.au/powerlines

Briefs Kidnap claim before court
A Sunbury man will face court charged with false imprisonment, assault and firearms offences after a dispute over an allegedly stolen car on October 9. Police said a Gisborne man was assaulted and threatened with a shotgun then kidnapped before being returned to his house some time later. Kyneton’s Detective Sergeant Steve Cole said the Sunbury man, 22, was arrested after officers from the Hume criminal investigation unit, Victoria Police armed response unit and Kyneton police raided three Sunbury properties the next day. Three other people were also arrested and released pending further inquiries. The Sunbury man was remanded to Broadmeadows Magistrates Court on October 27.

Geoff Neil said he supported any efforts to improve road safety. ‘‘There are always opportunities; it’s certainly something that shouldn’t be ignored,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s the old problem; how do you market it so those who need to take it into account actually take it into account.’’ RoadSafe Central Victoria road safety officer Malcolm Pollitt agreed.
(Wayne Hawkins)
A veteran motorcyclist has called for targeted campaigns and more rider training in a bid to improve road safety in the Macedon Ranges. Gisborne South motorcyclist Rod Brown – who is still getting over neck, back and knee injuries sustained in a crash near the Riddells Creek bridge on Australia Day – said it was time for people to stop the ‘‘blame game’’ and get on with the business of saving lives. Transport Accident Commission figures show there were 21 fatalities on Macedon Ranges roads from October 2009 to last month. Five involved motorcycles. A total of 258 people went to hospital after crashes between October 2009 and January this year; 71 of them were motorcyclists. A Riddells Creek man, 26, died on October 12 when he came off his motorbike on Riddell Road near Sunbury. Mr Brown, a member of the Independent Riders Group, said a regional strategy was needed to increase awareness and boost motorcycle safety. ‘‘We need to identify crash hotspots and how to address them,’’ he said. ‘‘There are lots of signs [promoting awareness] about pushbikes, but I don’t see a lot for motorbike riders.’’ Mr Brown, who is critical of the extra registration fees motorcyclists pay each year as a ‘‘safety tax’’, said national and state campaigns were too often focused on who was responsible for crashes and lacked local impact. He also said he wanted more detailed road assessments for learner riders before they are given a licence. ‘‘We’ve got to do something,’’ he said. ‘‘Let’s get the information caravans out at the hotspots and talk to people, like the cyclists do.’’ Macedon Ranges highway patrol Sergeant
NEWS
‘‘It can be hard to find programs that are successful at a local level,” he said. ‘‘We do have a campaign where people are encouraged to phone in about hazards on the road and that has proved to be quite successful.’’ Mr Pollitt said the organisation was also working with motorcyclists to produce roadside and mobile billboards, similar to bicycle safety messages seen across the shire.
No asbestos was detected in recent tests near Bulla’s landfill site. The Environment Protection Authority tested smoke and dust coming from the tip after some residents raised fears these may have included asbestos particles. EPA metro manager Richard Marks said the authority would continue to advise the tip’s operators about how to minimise emissions.
Bald Hill needs friends
Macedon Ranges residents are being urged to join the new Bald Hill Reserve friends group to protect the 96-hectare wildlife corridor. The first meeting will be held at Kyneton Gun Club, off Pipers Creek Road, this Saturday from 2pm. RSVP by phone: 0448 401 372.

s the development of Braemar College’s second campus moves forward, we are already putting steps in place to ensure a seamless transition for students moving between the two locations. Our new campus in Romsey Road will house our middle school (years 5-8) and senior students in years 9-12 will continue to receive a first class education in the scenic bushland setting of our Mt Macedon Road campus. These are exciting times for the college as we develop programs to best provide for the individual learning needs of our students. We understand that the quality of teacher-student interaction is the key to effective learning, and this is the focus of progressive changes coming into effect at middle school level in 2015. Teachers will teach students for multiple subjects according to their specialist areas. For example, a student will have the same teacher for both maths and science or for English and humanities. This will develop stronger teacher-student relationships. When teachers really know their students, they can personalise learning and teaching programs to maximise individual outcomes. Our new middle school model has been developed to help students reach their full potential. It is underpinned by a teaching team dedicated to ensuring a unique and rewarding learning experience.
have been the principal at TKIS since July 2011. Like many of its students and teachers, I was drawn to The Kilmore International School because of its reputation for providing a true international education and for its superior academic results. Prior to taking the reins at Kilmore, I was acting principal at Jerudong International School in Brunei. We are a boarding and day school, conveniently located in a safe rural setting in the town of Kilmore, north of Melbourne. With almost 400 students, the school has a family atmosphere, where girls and boys from Melbourne, country Victoria and around the world become part of a close-knit learning community. The Kilmore International School has an
impressive record of academic success in the International Baccalaureate diploma program. Our inspiring, experienced and highly qualified teachers enjoy an exceptional relationship with their students, most of whom will attend leading universities throughout the world. The pastoral leaders and home room teachers know their students thoroughly. All students belong to a house and participate in co-curricular activities, including a week-long camp. I believe an international education equips students to be world-ready and prepares them for university and successful careers. Andrew Taylor Principal

Complete and ready for move-in day, this appealing house in a sought-after position in town has most things a family look for, such as plenty of space and lots of comfort. There are three bedrooms and a study, the main with walk-in wardrobe and full en suite. A carpeted lounge room provides a place for adults to retreat to, and there’s a tiled family-meals for relaxed downtime. The kitchen has a two-tiered servery bench, a pantry and stainless-steel appliances including underbench oven, gas cooktop and dishwasher. A wood heater and two split-systems provide year-round climate control. An outdoor entertainment area has views of well-established gardens with a shed and vegie patch. The big block has a remote-controlled double garage and the side driveway has plenty of space for parking boat or caravan.
An integrated coffee machine in the kitchen points to the extra quality found in this as-new house and, for today’s brew-savvy, could be the deal maker. But there’s plenty more to like here such as a dual-entry lounge room off the entry hall which lends itself to a home theatre; and a large tiled family-meals area abutting the kitchen. A red glass splashback accents the black and white kitchen where there’s an integrated microwave, two-door pantry, wine rack, island servery bench, underbench oven and cooktkop under a canopy rangehood. An integrated outdoor room faces neat landscaped gardens and there’s also an integrated double garage. Gas ducted heating, evaporative cooling and double-glazed windows are other keynotes at this property within easy reach of schools, shops, sports facilities and freeway access.

and Japanese maple, entry is under a verandah to a small, tiled entry hall with a study on the right decked out in bold cherry-red walls and black-and-white checkerboard flooring; it also has a storage closet. An archway opposite introduces a grey-carpeted, L-shaped lounge room with a period-style mantelpiece around a fireplace. This room links with the terracotta-tiled kitchen-meals area which, in turn, opens to two decks. One is enclosed with cafe blinds and timber/corrugated iron screens, and the other is open to the sunshine.
The meals section has timber dado walls and a wood heater, while the kitchen has an abundance of timber cupboards, dishwasher, Allenzi 900mm cooker, wide fridge recess and a glorious rhododendron framed in the window behind the sink. Heading to the back, there’s a large, tiled rumpus room off which are four bedrooms, laundry, and the main bathroom with a corner spa and dual vanity basins under a cedar-lined ceiling. The main bedroom has a walk-in robe and looks out the pool area; others each have mirrored robes.

Brick paving surrounds the fenced in-ground pool, beyond which is a large lawn, pittosporum fence screens, a shed, and a great cubby house. The yard accesses the property’s third entry point where there’s loads of parking space in front of a large Colorbond shed with attached open bay. This nicely separates the work stuff from the house precinct and, near here, there’s a reed-edged pond and a hedge defining a stand of silver birches. All very pretty. Carole Levy

“Town or Tank” More and more people are moving out of the suburbs to seek a quieter rural lifestyle and the question of town or tank water often arises. Many of us grew up with nothing but tank water; however, it was a different world with different expectations. We had a bath, not showers, and the bath water was shared, washing was done once a week often in a copper not a washing machine. There were few flushing toilets – the night-man came and the washing up was done in a basin with the water then tipped onto the garden. These days we expect to shower at least once a day and sometimes more and we all expect flushing toilets, washing machines and dishwashers and so the question of water supply becomes one of importance. I find there are many who find the idea of existing on just tank water quite intimidating and there are some who will not even consider a property unless it is connected to town water so let us look at “tank water”. If you are selling a property which is on tank water it is most useful for your agent to know the exact capacity of the tanks. Let the agent know how many loads of washing are done each week – this is particularly important to woman. Have you ever needed to buy water and what was the cost? How many people live in the home and how often there are visitors who have always had town water do not understand tanks and the more information they can be given the more comfortable and confident they will feel.
102 Main Street, Romsey 3434 PH: 5429 5544
Supply all information to you agent and help us dispel the fears attached to tank water.

appreciation to Shantelle for doing such a wonderful job in assisting me throughout the process of purchasing my new property. She has kept me informed throughout in all proceedings. Shantelle has a wonderful personality and must be a great asset to your business. Your line of work must be quite demanding by trying to fit in so many clients into an 8 hour day and trying to meet all their needs which is why I appreciated the effort Shantelle put in as I received phone calls from her well after most places go home at 5pm. I am so glad to have dealt with Shantelle and will certainly refer her to others.Thankyou

Sunlight is good for much more than getting a tan at the beach. It can also be used by homeowners as a way to reduce power bills and help the environment. Joining the solar revolution- The installation of solar panels on home rooftops is increasingly popular. With environmental conservation an ever important issue for people, using solar panels to reduce the need for electricity and other energy production is a great way to make your home that much more ecofriendly. At the same time, less power used means less money spent. For many people, the long-term savings on energy bills more than makes up for the initial cost of investing in solar panels. Many local governments have programs in place that offer homeowners who install solar panels special rebates and grants to help pay for them. However, solar panels are not the only way to make use of the power of the sun. Passive solar projects - Renovating your home to make better use of the sun can be a great way to improve your home’s comfort and add value. The sun that streams in through your windows is free, so it only makes sense to take advantage of it. You may wish to change the paint colour in rooms that receive the most sunshine. Darker colours retain heat better, so try switching up the colour on the walls to help keep a room warmer. How you use the sun is ultimately up to you, but taking advantage of its boundless energy makes sense both financially and environmentally.
We work harder for you

Real Estate Today Seller’s Psychology Selling your home is an emotional experience. If you are wise you add a spot of paint here and there, have the carpets and windows cleaned, the lawns mowed and the garden weeded. You put fresh flowers in the vases and maintain a vigil over the family’s tidiness. Everything must be perfect for inspection day.
(Supplied)
You’ve opted for an auction, but hope you sell beforehand. But if you get a buyer on the first inspection day, and you accept his or her offer, your worries are not necessarily over. Many vendors who sell quickly wonder if they have done the right thing. If they had waited would they have got a better price? Because it all seemed so easy they can feel they’ve sold the house at a bargain price. As they begin to wonder about that better price they can also start looking at the house with renewed interest and even begin to doubt whether they want to sell at all. If the price is fairly close to that suggested by the real estate agent who is selling your property just relax and be grateful for a smooth sale. The agent will have set a realistic price, and he or she is the one with the experience. Some houses do sell quickly simply because the right buyer appears at the right time. We at Dunlop Real Estate are skilled and experienced in all aspects of real estate, especially is assessment of a realistic asking price. We can advise you in all aspects of real estate, so if we can assist you in any way, feel free to contact me, John Dunlop on 9744 2555 or call into our friendly offices in Sunbury or Gisborne for a chat.

Look before you leap There’s plenty to think about for buyers purchasing their first home, and the process can often prove arduous and stressful. But there are ways for first-time buyers to avoid becoming overwhelmed and making decisions later regretted. It comes down to doing your research and asking yourself some fundamental questions:
What do you need?
Know exactly the type of property you need to purchase, and weigh-up the reasons for purchasing it, such as investment, location, price, floor plan, room to extend, etc. Knowing your needs allows you to streamline your property search, shortening the time spent. Buyers can also tell agencies what they need and have the latter do some searching around - buyer’s agents, for example. Be realistic. A growing family can’t live in a small apartment forever. A single person generally doesn’t need a high-maintenance block of land. Figure out the style of property that best suits your
lifestyle. Bigger or newer is not always better.
What about the area?
Is the property handy to work or lifestyle perks such as a beach, or walking tracks? Is there a railway station nearby? Is the council planning for services upgrades? Are things like crime and pollution driving residents away? Understand the demographics of the area and spend time inspecting changing traffic conditions on the street you intend to buy on.
What’s your personal situation?
While we can’t see into the future, it’s important to plan for hurdles along the way, especially financial. Have a buffer account for unexpected costs, such as increases in council and strata fees and interest rates. Knowing your limits is the key to a successful first home purchase.

Romsey dojo hits form
Sport shorts Golf
Romsey’s Sharif Abdul-Sayed and Lorraine Robb took home the trophies from the inaugural Macedon Ranges Spring Cup on Sunday. Players from Romsey, Mount Macedon, Goonawarra, Kyneton and Gisborne competed in the event, battling strong winds in the morning. Abdul-Sayed’s steady hand helped him to victory, with Mount Macedon’s Jim Hynes second and Marcus Ward third. In the women’s section, Robb came home strongly for her win, with club mate Beryl Cole in second.
By Tara Murray The Ti-ga karate self-defence centre at Romsey is already having success just months after opening. Ivan Kucera, who lives in Epping, decided to open the dojo in Romsey to give people interested in karate somewhere to train. “There are not many dojos [in the area] and one of my mates told me that kids wanted to do martial arts out here. “There are dojos in Sunbury and Lancefield, but that is all in the area,” he said. “We ended up with 40 students right off, and the response was massive. We’re starting to get more adults wanting to join as well.” Kucera, who has won medals at state level including a second last year at the Victorian championships, says it’s exciting to see younger competitors getting results. At the national all-styles Victorian championships earlier this month, the club finished with six trophies, including one for first and four for second places. Kucera said: “My two daughters competed – Letitia got two trophies for second place in the points and continuous sparring for her age group. “Kiara [Kucera] got fourth in the points and fifth in the continuous sparring.” Kiara Della-Rocco came second in the points scoring, while Ludvik Kucera became champion in points-scoring in the adult novice division. Kucera said the aim of the dojo was about having fun. “They love coming here to train. It’s really intense, but it’s also about making them have fun when they compete. Some get down when they lose, as kids are kids, but as long as they give 100 per cent, that’s all you can ask for.”
