Poll brings out education vows By Matt Crossman

Kyneton’s own Cup Day Horsepower, fine fashion, live music, loads of fun and some serious betting will be hallmarks of Wednesday’s Kyneton Cup. A crowd of about 5000 is expected at Kyneton racecourse for the town’s biggest race day. Kyneton Racing Club general manager Jon Dight says there will be plenty to keep racegoers entertained, with a nine-race program on an improved track likely to produce quality action. The club recently undertook a complete overhaul of drainage and irrigation systems, ‘‘Off-track, we’ve got fashions on the field,
a $20 punters’ club, and we’ve added a lot of live music as well,’’ Dight said. This year’s fashions on the field contest offers $4000 in prizes. There will be a jumping castle and playground for children. Courtesy buses will run to and from Kyneton railway station. Dight says the race meeting is part of Victoria’s Spring Racing Carnival and is always held on the day after the Melbourne Cup. ‘‘It’s the town’s own event … there’s a really good community vibe.’’ Matt Crossman
Enough talking – it’s time for action. That was the view of many who attended a state election education forum in Kyneton last week. Lisa Ohlmus, spokeswoman for the Friends of Kyneton Education group, said organisers were pleased that Labor had promised to fund a new Kyneton primary school for 350 pupils, and she looked forward to the Liberal Party matching the commitment. Macedon Labor candidate Mary-Anne Thomas told the forum education was shaping as a significant divide between the two major parties. ‘‘The more I’ve learnt, the more passionate I’ve become about the need to invest in public education,’’ she said. ‘‘It is the most effective tool we have to tackle inequality.’’ Ms Thomas said Labor wanted Kyneton to be a ‘‘destination’’ for education, with a new primary school campus, improvements to Kyneton Secondary College and a trades training centre. She said the party would respect the community’s wishes about an ongoing separation between the primary and secondary schools. Greens candidate Neil Barker said the Kyneton community deserved schools with the facilities needed to adequately teach students over the next few decades, not 10 years. Liberal candidate Donna Petrovich said the present government supported a new primary school as part of the seven-year-old Kyneton
education plan, but said “one size doesn’t fit all”. ‘‘My vision for this place is to actually get on with it and do the job,’’ Ms Petrovich said. When pressed by residents about the Liberal Party’s commitment to the education plan and Kyneton Primary School’s need for a 350-pupil capacity, Ms Petrovich said she would only make promises she could guarantee.
‘‘
It is the most effective tool we have to tackle - Mary-Anne Thomas inequality
’’
‘‘We want to empower the school and school leadership,’’ she said. ‘‘These details will be worked out as we go along.’’ Ms Petrovich warned that the election of a Labor government could lead to the conversation about Kyneton schools ‘‘starting again’’. Ms Thomas said there is a lot riding on the outcome of next month’s election, and she vowed Labor would deliver a new primary school, significant upgrades to the ageing secondary school and a trades training hub. Ms Petrovich said Liberal commitments for a new primary school and secondary school works were ‘‘actual budget line items’’. The Friends group’s Ms Ohlmus encouraged Macedon voters to make an informed decision. ‘‘Given this [education plan] has been dragged out over successive governments and over many years, we’re keen to see these promises actually materialise,’’ she said.

On menu: buy, eat, learn By Matt Crossman A jewel in Kyneton’s foodie crown is open for business. About 100 people attended the unveiling of a $500,000 expansion of Piper Street Food Company last Wednesday. The store’s recently completed development tripled the floor space and now includes a kitchen, cafe, cooking school and bakery. Owner and chef Damian Sandercock said the expanded store was an asset to Kyneton and would bolster the town’s reputation as a tourist destination. ‘‘For us, the hard work starts now. The space has a huge amount of potential and I’m really excited about watching the business grow,’’ he said. Cooking school co-ordinator Simone Gordon said the business’s various offerings would provide an economic boost for the town, with parts of the store open seven days a week. The cooking school offers midweek classes for simpler dishes, while more difficult fare is taught on Saturdays. ‘‘We’veMARKET had a broad range of people ROTARY May 9. NEWS MACEDONRANGES.STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
All at sea, then came the navy By Matt Crossman Life at sea in the navy sure isn’t for everyone. But for Sunbury’s Darby Munro, the decision to serve his country aboard HMAS Shropshire was the beginning of a brilliant new chapter of his life. Mr Munro, who turns 91 this month, says joining the navy after being raised in an orphanage was ‘‘beautiful’’. ‘‘I was sent out to work on a farm when I was about 10,’’ he said. ‘‘[When I reached working age] some people said they were my parents, so I came to Melbourne. ‘‘I found out later they weren’t who they said they were, so I went and joined the navy.’’ Mr Munro served in the Pacific in World War II. He was on board when the ship came under waves of attack by Japanese pilots for five days. While reluctant to speak about the harsher aspects of war, he said navy life had opened up the world to him. ‘‘I only went to school one day a week growing up and couldn’t read or write,” he said. “But as soon as I got on the ship, the boys taught me and I picked it up as I went along.’’ Things only got better for Mr Munro after the war. He walked off the ship, took part in a march in the city and walked into a job as a stacker at a flour mill. He remained in the industry for almost 40 years. In 1948 he married his sweetheart, Yvonne, after having served with her brother on the Shropshire. They went on to have four sons and four daughters, 15 grandchildren and four great-

Mr Munro said that for all his achievements, nothing surpassed family. ‘‘To think I came from nothing, to have such a loving family … it’s just beautiful,’’ he said. Mr Munro remains active in community life. In addition to selling poppies in the leadup to every Remembrance Day, he spends each Monday night in a community kitchen. ‘‘I just make the sweets, bread and butter pudding and that sort of stuff,” he said. ‘‘It’s good to keep helping others.’’

Light Horse here to stay Kyneton’s place as one of the spiritual homes of the Australian Light Horse has been immortalised with a new monument. The statue of a charging soldier, bayonet in hand, was unveiled in front of about 400 people at the Mechanics Institute last Friday. The event marked the culmination of a long-running community campaign to honour the town’s connection to the famous mounted rifle corps, which dates to 1859. Kyneton was one of the earliest homes of a volunteer troop. The Australian Light Horse of mounted troops served in the Second Boer War as well as WWI. The 4th Light Horse Regiment served on three fronts in the Great War – at Gallipoli, on the Western Front and in Palestine.
Kyneton Light Horse monument group secretary Larina Strauch said the group had worked with Heritage Victoria, Kyneton RSL and Macedon Ranges council to bring the project to fruition. She said the statue had already increased awareness of Kyneton’s place in Australian war history. ‘‘I’ve had many people come up to me and say they didn’t realise the great connection Kyneton has with the Light Horse,’’ Ms Strauch said. ‘‘It’s not a glorification of conflict but an acknowledgment that Kyneton holds the key to that rich history.’’ Matt Crossman
A Gisborne mother whose child’s life was saved by staff at the Royal Children’s Hospital is urging people to help her to support others needing the hospital’s services. Emma Dwyer’s daughter, Hannah, now 4, has made a spectacular recovery after her latest round of heart surgery on August 25. Hannah was born with half a heart and underwent the first of three major surgeries almost immediately after birth. After so much trauma, Ms Dwyer said it was tremendous to see her little girl doing so well. She has organised a fundraiser at New Gisborne’s train park, in Webb Crescent, this Sunday. The family fun day will include stalls, rides, show bags, jumping castles, music and farm animals. Ms Dwyer hopes to raise enough money to donate 3000 bags packed with basic items, such as toothpaste, a hairbrush and shampoo, for families having to rush to the hospital at short notice. Revegetation supported
Efforts to create a native flora and fauna corridor at Lancefield Primary School have received a state government grant of $46,000. Upgrades to a walking track at Lancefield’s recreation reserve will also receive $35,000 after Environment and Climate Change Minister Ryan Smith visited the town last Wednesday. A total of $207,078 was announced for environmental projects in the Macedon electorate, including $14,000 for improvements at Trentham’s Stoney Creek Reserve and $10,000 for bush landscaping at Newham Primary School. Woodend Landcare will receive $28,400
for efforts to remove weeds along Five Mile Creek.
Track upgrades at The Rock
Horse and jockey safety will be improved at Hanging Rock racecourse when 1600 metres of plastic running rail is installed around the famous track. Northern Victoria MP Amanda Millar announced $32,000 for the project last Wednesday. Racing Victoria and the Kyneton and Hanging Rock Racing Club will fund the balance of the $64,000 project. Club general manager Jon Dight said the upgrades would be welcomed by jockeys and trainers, and would help secure the long-term future of racing at the Hanging Rock track, which has hosted official races since 1886.
Mural celebrates show
A colourful 12-metre-long mural celebrating 154 years of the Kyneton Agricultural Show has been unveiled at the Mollison Street showgrounds. The mural, on a previously blank section of corrugated iron, has transformed the frontage of the showgrounds known as Watts Pavilion. This year’s show is on November 14 and 15. For more details, visit www.kynetonshow.org.au.
Sunbury aid groups funded
Not-for-profit groups in Hume have received cash in a new round of grants from the council’s charitable fund. The groups include Sunbury-based welfare support and emergency relief agency CareWorks SunRanges. The Riding for the Disabled branch at Oaklands and Goonawarra Bilby’s Playgroup Association were also among this year’s recipients.

“Broxburn” is a classy property of about 2000 square metres with beautiful surrounds and each family member catered for in terms of living space and entertainment options. Everything is of a high quality, including floorboards, carpets, top-notch kitchen appliances and chic bathrooms, seamless indoor/outdoor integration and a stylishly done fenced inground swimming pool. There are four bedrooms and a study; the main has a walk-in robe and en suite. Living areas include a carpeted lounge room at the front, and a gorgeous family-meals space with bifolds to a great undercover outdoor zone. The kitchen has loads of blackwood cupboards, dishwasher and Miele cooking appliances. Gardens here are exceptional, with a mix of formal hedging, English trees and general leafiness. Other keynotes are a split-system, ducted vacuum, garden shed, raised vegie gardens, water tank, double carport and remote-controlled double garage. The train station is a walk away.
A homestead-style residence on about 4000 square metres of wonderful gardens, both productive and picturesque, “Chiamington” epitomises the best of rural living with all township services on the doorstep. Raked plaster ceilings, timber dado walls, deep skirts, new carpets throughout, slate floor tiles, fresh paint in smart white and skylight panels define the decor of an essentially country house. The kitchen, flanked on each side with dining and lounge rooms (wood heater), embodies “modern country” with cabinetry painted in the softest green, open display shelves, pantry cupboard and gas stainless-steel cooker. There are three bedrooms, the main with en suite, and a main bathroom with a spa. Providing extensive entertainment and relaxation space, the back verandah couples with a gabled pergola which juts out into the surrounding leafiness. Lifestyle magic includes boxed vegie gardens, a sheltered chicken coop and many fruit trees.

A combination of original Edwardian and lavish contemporary updates define Fintona House, a worthy winner of the 2012 Master Builders Award. On about 6070 square metres, the main house couples with another residence (attached to the garage) with three bedrooms, a study, kitchen-living room and large bathroom. The main house has floorboards, leadlight features, deep skirts, stepped cornices and picture windows that deliver plenty of design punch. Of the three bedrooms, the main has a walk-in robe and lavish en suite. A sitting room has a gas log fire, while a stylish family-dining area abuts a great kitchen with butler’s pantry, stone benchtops, a Falcon cooker and other European appliances. French doors open to the wraparound verandah which looks out to a sophisticated pool setting; the in-ground pool is heated and self-cleaning and landscaping is a mix of sweeping lawns, formal hedging and English trees.
All class from go to whoa, this double-storey in Green Gables estate has been designed with comfort and liveability in mind, even to the point of having a self-contained studio ready for a teen or extended family. Of the five bedrooms, the main has an en suite with timber vanity unit, while the main bathroom has dual vanity basins – and there are four toilets and a study. Living areas are a lounge room and a family-meals area next to a kitchen with American oak cabinetry, granite benchtops, dishwasher and 900mm underbench oven and gas cooktop. Parquetry floorboards throughout living zones are a treat, while zoned ducted heating, two split-systems, double-glazed windows and alarm are other winning features. An elevated outdoor room, enclosed with cafe blinds, has stunning views of Sunbury and Melbourne’s skyline beyond. A triple garage, double carport, four water tanks, fantastic gardens and backyard access round out an excellent property.

A property of about 13 hectares of fertile soil, “Erinvale” would make a fine hobby farm or provide a family with a rural lifestyle in a region noted for its food, wines and scenic vistas. The house, built circa late-1800s, has a rich local history and has retained all period features. A subsequent extension and more recent updates have been sympathetically executed, maintaining a country farmhouse soul with the added spice of bygone glamour. At the end of a long, ornamental pear-lined driveway, the house precinct is an oasis of beauty amid paddocks and extensive shedding, some of which also mark an older time. There’s a whimsical
mix of an old dairy shed, a great chicken coop, stockyards, a hothouse, a large dog yard, a big pig pen with shelter, storage sheds, workshop, a massive hay/machinery shed, a three-door Colorbond shed, fenced paddocks, a vegie garden, mini orchard, cubby house and playground, a reliable bore, numerous water tanks – and the embodiment of farm life, a windmill. Now to the house. Beyond a verandah that wraps around all sides, the classic central entry hall has the best of its era: wide-format Baltic floorboards, ceiling rosettes, very deep skirts, 3.6-metre ceilings, painted stepped cornices and an arch with wonderfully ornate corbels. Four bedrooms flank the hallway, one of which
is set up as a study (with closet). The main bedroom has a beautiful leadlight bay window and, as do two others, an original mantelpiece; in this case, it has 2pac wardrobes built in on each side. At hall’s end, a stained-glass door marks the newer section and where Tasmanian oak floorboards begin, although in the sitting room here the Baltic floorboards remain. This living area has painted ceiling boards, a glazed door to a side verandah, and a wood heater set in a slate surround. The kitchen next door, accessed from the side verandah via a mudroom/airlock, has loads of Tassie oak cupboards, a dual-level breakfast bench, a corner pantry, underbench oven, electric cooktop and a

dual-drawer dishwasher; a leadlight feature window references the original period. Right at the back, there’s a dining/sun room with sash windows and deep skirts (evidence of attention to period detail); a bathroom with a spa, timber vanity unit and enclosed toilet; and a laundry with a second enclosed toilet. Gardens are marked by extensive recent tree planting, destined to put on a fabulous display, along with formal hedging, a stand of silver birches, roses in abundance and cottage-style garden beds. Within a few minutes’ drive of the town centre, “Erinvale” is a slice of Kyneton magic. Carole Levy

“A GreAt MAn” I turned 21 in 1972, the year that I was “of age” to vote. Whatever your politics may have been I don’t think anyone would argue that a “great man” entered the political area that year. Gough Whitlam made huge changes to our lives and the extraordinary thing is, so many of those massive changes are still impacting on our lives today. Ordinary working-class people on very minimal incomes could send their children to University! Ordinary working class people could go to the doctor without fear of the cost. Women’s rights were recognized, suddenly even married women could have superannuation, and conscription stopped! Until the changes of to the cost of university, low income earners (most of the population) has absolutely no hope of ever sending their children to University. The costs involved were simply too great. The advent of Medicare changed the way we saw Health Care, and this remains so today. Many woman will remember a time when men had superannuation – woman, particularly married women, did not. Woman’s wages were significantly lower, even when doing the same job, than men. This changed and though there is still room for improvement at least a start was made. The Vietnam War saw the introduction of conscription for the first time since World War 1. Young men whose names were “pulled out of a hat”, no choice but to fight and die with no say. Conscription was ended! A “Great Man” has passed from this world. Some will remember the good that he did. Some will remember the mistakes – he was human after all – but Gough Whitlam has left a legacy for us all and for our children. “May he rest in peace”

SMALL ROOMS SEEM LARGER
Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th Nov
No one wants to feel cramped in their own home, but a small room with the wrong decor can leave you feeling trapped and surrounded. Fortunately, there are plenty of easy ways to make even small spaces feel open and expansive. Keep it light- Common wisdom goes that light colours should always be used in small spaces. Think cream and sky blue, and avoid blacks and dark reds. Also, try to keep your colour scheme matching throughout the room, as clashing colours can draw attention to how small the space truly is. Avoid clutter- Clutter can make even a large room feel small (and messy). For this reason, it’s especially important to keep small spaces spare and clean in order to provide the illusion of space. Make use of storage- Small rooms can only handle so much furniture, so it’s a good idea to focus on pieces that can double up. Perhaps a couch that can fold out into a bed? A desk that has plenty of pull out drawers for keeping important documents? Think vertical- Even a small room can be given the illusion of space if you make design choices that draw the eyes upward. A fancy lighting fixture or splash of colour on the ceiling will draw focus upward and away from encroaching walls. Accentuate windows- There’s a great big world outside, so if a small room has windows, make sure to accentuate them. Don’t worry about covering up windows with drapes; instead try to draw attention to the outside and design around the windows to make them a focal point.
TIPS FOR HOME LIGHTING Interior design choices, like paint colours and furniture placement, often take precedence for home buyers, but lighting can be just as important when it comes to a property’s atmosphere. Also, since lighting is a necessary and practical part of a home, you could make the case that it’s more important, handling double duty as both a design choice and a functional home component. With this in mind, there are a few strategies you can use to ensure your home’s lighting both fits your needs and adds to decor. Determining goals- Before making decisions regarding your property’s lighting, figure out what your goals are. Do you want lighting that will be used for reading? Are you looking for dimmable lighting systems that can change atmosphere at the turn of a knob? Are you more concerned with functionality or design? Letting your home guide you- Certain lighting systems work better depending on the design of your home. For instance, if you have high ceilings, employing recessed lighting may be more beneficial than a chandelier, as it will allow you to direct where the light flows and illuminate a large space. Meanwhile, a relatively small room may only need a floor lamp instead of lights installed in the ceiling. Focusing on light bulbs -While where and how a room is lit is important, don’t forget the effect light bulbs can have. The difference between a compact fluorescent bulb and an incandescent bulb is great, making it important to figure out which bests suits your design choices.

Real Estate Today Managing a Tenancy Requires Skill Owning property is generally a very safe investment over the long term, especially with the real estate boom that has occurred in recent times, but it’s still important to have a tenant who pays the rent on time and takes care of your property. To begin with, property managers thoroughly understand your rights and obligations as a landlord as well as those corresponding to your tenant. This is important because you always want to be on the correct side of the law. The next thing is to carefully choose your tenant. Property managers have the everyday experience and wherewithal to give you the best chance of having a creditworthy and reliable tenant. When your tenant moves in there is the condition report to properly fill out. This shows that the tenant and you agree on the condition of the property at the time the tenant moves in. Your property manager will make sure it includes every necessary detail, so that when your tenant leaves, the same report can be used to assess any wear and tear on the property. Experience counts in determining such matters. During the tenancy you always want your property properly maintained as well. Your property manager will handle all repairs as they arise while periodically inspecting the property on your behalf and alerting

Rupertswood fires up
Jets scout for fresh talent
By Tara Murray Opening bowler Jay King was the destroyer as Rupertswood cemented its spot at the top of the table in Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s B-grade. In eight overs, he included six maidens, taking 5-4 to start Diggers Rest-Bulla’s batting collapse. The match between the top two sides was a one-sided affair. Winning the toss, Rupo was on the back foot early, losing three early wickets. Hayden Ross and Michael Treweek came together to rescue the innings, making 59 not out and 42 respectively. Late wickets fell as Rupo tried to push the score, ending their innings at 9-158. But Diggers Rest Bulla couldn’t strike back. Opener Darren Quarrell and Shannon O’Keefe weren’t able to bat, leaving the side two short, while those who could failed to fire. None reached double figures. Brandon Smith, the last batsman in, top-scored with nine. Elsewhere, Ashfield chased down Bacchus Marsh’s total of 5-188 to get its second win for the season. Ashfield reached its target with more than four overs to spare, making 4-195. Macedon easily reached East Sunbury’s score of 7-136. Liam Sherlock top-scored for East Sunbury with 51. Macedon made 5-138 in reply with Gareth De Rosayro making 5-138. The match between Sunbury United and St Anthonys was abandoned. In C-grade, Gisborne, Woodend, Sunbury and Lancefield all had wins. The first of the two-day matches begin this weekend.

It will be a new-look Sunbury Jets next season, with only two of this year’s list returning to play in Big V division 1. After a season in which the Jets finished 10th with eight wins, coach Grant Spencer says changes are on the way in his second year on the job. He said only Nathan Sellwood and Michael Charalambous would return to the side. “I inherited a group of players and some of them didn’t have the discipline and professionalism that I require as a coach. We have recruited guys who can provide the professionalism that is needed.” Spencer said there had been a mix of players choosing not to return for work reasons, and others who had been moved on. While he wasn’t in a position to announce who the new recruits would be, he said it would be a more experienced line-up. “We have signed an import. He is already in the town and training with the side. “Two former Jets players are returning, including a favourite son, and we have signed players from the state championship division.” Spencer said there was also a focus on bringing through some of the young Jets who played finals this year. “Ben Jones and Harrison Salm have been promoted and … at this point Aden Muir is in the squad. ” Tara Murray
Hayden Ross top-scored for Rupertswood with 59 not out. (Damian Visentini)
