NEWS

Solid start for Sunbury council Sunbury council will have a solid financial foundation for its debut following a state government amendment that guarantees millions of dollars from the sale of 50 hectares of land on Racecourse Road will go to the new municipality. Planning Minister Matthew Guy also promised last week $200,000 for town centre upgrades and improvements to O’Shannassy Street and Sunbury Village Green. The now-caretaker government approved an amendment to rezone 275 Racecourse Road, Sunbury, from farming zone to general residential, allowing ‘‘much-needed land to be unlocked for residential housing’’. Mr Guy said 100 per cent of money raised from the sale of the land would go to Sunbury council, and not Hume. The government recently confirmed Sunbury council will come into existence on July 1 next year. The new city will include Sunbury township, Bulla and parts of Diggers Rest. “The rezoning and sale of this land will put the new Sunbury council on a firm financial footing,” Mr Guy said. The controversial Racecourse Road plan was given the green light by an independent planning panel late last year, but debate about the distribution of the proceeds continued. Almost 460 submissions were received when Hume council first advertised its intention to rezone the site. Plans presented by developer Australand foresaw a mixture of semi-rural, suburban and urban house lots as well as more than 15

hectares of wetlands, parks and reserves, a small-scale retail centre, and extension of the Sunbury bike path project. Many residents voiced strong objections to the proposal, calling on Mr Guy to stop the rezoning. They also lobbied former state upper house MP Donna Petrovich and then Local Government Minister Jeanette Powell to prevent Hume council selling off what they claimed were Sunbury assets.

‘‘

We’re pleased all the money will go to Sunbury - Bernie O’Farrell council

’’

Sunbury Residents Association president Bernie O’Farrell welcomed Mr Guy’s decision, given that an initial report by KPMG recommended only 25 per cent of proceeds from the sale go to a Sunbury council. ‘‘We’re pleased that all the money will go to Sunbury council,’’ Mr O’Farrell said. ‘‘It will contribute significantly to putting the council on sound terms financially.’’ Liberal candidate for Sunbury Jo Hagan welcomed funding for town centre upgrades. “This will assist with an upgrade to O’Shannassy Street footpaths and improvements to the Sunbury Village Green with new lighting, plantings and a memorial garden bed,” Ms Hagan said. ‘‘This funding will help provide an attractive, safe and integrated connection between community facilities and public spaces in the Sunbury town centre to support our growing community.”

Ranges ring in Budburst The season’s start of a new wine vintage will be celebrated during this weekend’s Budburst Festival. The annual wine and food event is put on by the Macedon Ranges Vignerons Association. Gordon Cope-Williams, of Romsey’s Cope-Williams Winery, says it’s a great opportunity to enjoy fabulous wines, mouthwatering food and live music, ranging from blues and roots to pop and classical performances. “Local food and wine is what it’s all about,” he says. “It’s a good chance for people to see what we have to offer.” Cope-Williams Winery – well-known for its social cricket, Royal tennis and a large gallery

of local artworks – will showcase six sparkling wines, a lunch menu influenced by British pub food, and a harp and flute recital. Winelovers and gourmands can visit more than 20 wineries and taste more than 100 wines from the region as part of this year’s Budburst. Other events include a five-course Granite Hills cellar degustation dinner at Annie Smithers’ Bistrot in Kyneton and a ‘comparison evening’ at Trentham’s Cosmopolitan Hotel, featuring a four-course menu with matching wines from the Macedon Ranges and Bendigo vineyards. When Romsey resident Sabrina Parrini races up Melbourne’s Eureka Tower on Sunday, she hopes to not only raise money to help disadvantaged young people but also show that athletes don’t have to consume animal products to make it to the top. Preparing for her first Eureka Climb as a vegan, Ms Parrini says she made a major change to her lifestyle earlier this year while studying nutrition. ‘‘I was already a vegetarian, but when I learnt about factory farming … I realised that animal welfare went much further than I thought.’’ Ms Parrini, a merchandise officer at Edgar’s Mission animal sanctuary in Lancefield, says she was able to abstain from animal products by altering vegetarian recipes. She now feels ‘‘lighter and less sluggish’’ and has prepared for her third entry in the central city climb by making regular trips up and down Hanging Rock. The Eureka Climb is one of the world’s highest vertical races, with participants running, walking or climbing 1642 stairs to the tower’s level-88 skydeck. The event raises funds for youth support organisation Whitelion and Interplast Australia, which improves the quality of life for people in the Asia Pacific who are disabled as a result of congenital or acquired medical conditions. Have your say: Community Consultation Framework Review Council’s policy that guides when and how it consults with the community has been reviewed. Council needs to ensure our practices are relevant and appropriate for the wide range of issues we consult about and for the people we need to consult. The Community Consultation Framework guides all consultation with the community and this review has identified four areas where we can further improve our practices: 1. Further update the policy to incorporate contemporary ways of communicating – for example social media. 2. Better integrate the policy with project planning communications. 3. Further enhance our capacity to coordinate and manage consultations through technology. 4. Further develop and train key staff in consultation and engagement. These four areas have been addressed in the reviewed document in addition to a range of other improvements. The draft reviewed framework is available on Council’s website, mrsc.vic.gov.au/yoursay or can be viewed in person at any Council service centre.

A pathway wends from here to the backyard where exquisite gardens put on a changing seasonal display, six raised vegie boxes supply a bountiful harvest, and chooks make an old cubbyhouse and fenced run their home. An irrigation system fed from a 2300-litre water tank puts paid to hand-watering and each garden plot is so well mulched a weed would hardly dare raise its head. CHILDPROOF YOUR KITCHEN

Sat 10.30-11.00am 12 Tarrango Crt, Sunbury

Small children love to explore and their tiny adventures often bring them to the kitchen. Not only is this where mum and dad cook them delicious meals, it’s also where a secret batch of biscuits might be waiting for them to discover. Whether your little one is crawling around on all fours or is confidently skipping around the house, there are steps you can take to make your kitchen a safer space. Cut off access -Depending on the age of your child, you might not want them to be able to access the kitchen at all. In cases such as these, employing safety gates is a great way to keep them from crawling around near electrical appliances, cutlery and potentially dangerous chemicals. Move up top- Some kitchen items are more dangerous than others. While plenty of households take to storing cleaners under the kitchen sink, if a toddler were to gain access to these chemicals, the result could be tragic. For this reason, it’s a good idea to move dangerous items out of reach. Storing them in high up cupboards or moving them away from the kitchen completely might be the best solution. Cook smart-Some children love to help their parents cook, and while this can be a fun bonding time, it’s also important to use common sense. Sharp or hot materials should be kept away from the edges of bench tops, and electrical cooking appliances should be kept out of reach.

Establishment of Sunbury City Council The Governor of Victoria signed an Order in Council on Wednesday 29 October 2014 establishing the Sunbury City Council from 1 July 2015. The following appointments have been made: • Ms Joanne Anderson, administrator until the 2016 general council elections (former administrator of Brimbank City Council and Benalla Rural City Council) • Mr Vince Haining, interim chief executive officer (former CEO of Maribyrnong City Council and acting CEO of Latrobe City Council) The Order in Council implements the Victorian Government’s response to the Sunbury out of Hume Local Government Panel. It provides for transitional arrangements needed to create the new council and makes consequential changes to the Hume City Council boundary. Hume City Council

The ballot was followed by the Local Government Panel review which reported to the Minister in June 2014. Chris and Lisa Peavey would like to say a heartfelt thanks to Friends, Family and the wonderful Gisborne Community. From day 1 of Chris's accident in June, offers of help flowed in. Good wishes, flowers, hot meals, barrow loads of wood at the door each night, lawns mowed, picking up and dropping off the boys at school and sport, and many, many other ways that we received support. Culminating in the "Amazing" BACK YARD BLITZ. To see so many people arrive at our home and swing into action, as a result of a fundraising event was truly overwhelming. We hope all will take this as a personal thanks as many people helped anonymously in many different ways. A mere Thank You can never be enough to describe how we feel. Chris, Lisa, Blake, Mason, Logan.

Home fancies fire in Cup By Matt Crossman This year’s Kyneton Cup has been celebrated as a great day for regional racing, with locally trained horses getting up in several events. While last Wednesday’s main event was taken out by rampaging Cranbourne gelding Tristram’s Sun, Macedon Ranges trainers Brent Stanley and Leon Corstens had horses streak past the winning post in other races. Romsey trainer Corstens scored a double, winning race 6 with Kinesthetic and race 9 with Stereosonic. But it was the 2000-metre feature event that brought the big crowd to its feet. Schockemohle and Lord Durante had set the pace but, when favourite Kenjorwood was trapped wide, Tristram’s Sun streaked away to win by two lengths. Golfers faced tough conditions in the qualifier for the semi-finals of the Romsey Golf Club’s John Laing Shield on Saturday. Battling wind and heat, only two players were able to better their handicaps. Bob McLennan and Les Gaunt won quarter-finals against Michael McCarten and Anthony Lakey respectively. Pat Chisholm beat Tony Freeman, while Dave Muller won against Mick Nicholls during the week.
