NEWS MACEDONRANGES.STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

Family violence still on the rise A Hume community lawyer has called for more funding for behavioural change programs and early intervention services to counter increasing rates of family violence. Broadmeadows Community Legal Centre’s Anita Plesa said the centre, which has an outreach service in Sunbury, dealt with almost 700 family violence clients in 2013-14. Victoria Police data shows there were 1134 reported cases of family violence from Sunbury in 2013-14, up from 1034 the previous year. A total of 183 reports were received in Kyneton – up from 165. Ms Plesa said prevention through early intervention and education was vital. ‘‘There are long waiting lists for men to attend behaviour change programs, and increased funding in this area is essential,’’ she said. ‘‘Funding should [also] be increased to bring awareness of illicit drug abuse, such as ice, alcoholism and their link with family violence.’’ A recent Senate hearing was told that a combination of cuts to programs, such as rental affordability schemes and community legal centres, had increased the strain on already stretched services for victims of domestic violence. The federal government has allocated about $200 million to combat violence against women and children under a national plan that began in 2009 and was updated in June this year. Minister Michaela Cash, who assists the Prime Minister with his women’s portfolio, defended the government’s domestic violence

planning as ‘‘comprehensive’’, saying the plan would receive $100 million more than the forward estimates. Hume and Macedon Ranges councils have urged residents to take a stand against family violence ahead of this month’s White Ribbon Day (November 25).

‘‘

Every woman and girl has the right to feel safe at - Adem Atmaca all times

’’

A 3000-square-metre sign saying ‘Violence against women – Hume says no’ is sited at Oaklands Junction and will be visible to planes landing at Melbourne Airport. Hume mayor Adem Atmaca said present family violence figures were unacceptable. ‘‘Every woman and girl has the right to feel safe at all times – especially in their own homes,’’ he said. Macedon Ranges White Ribbon ambassador Cr John Connor urged residents to swear an oath against family violence at a community event outside Riddells Creek Foodworks from 11am-2pm on November 25. ‘‘Domestic violence is more prevalent than many people may think, with one in three Australian women having experienced violence from someone known to them,’’ he said. Animations projected on to buildings across Macedon Ranges are part of ‘‘16 days of action’’.

Rights on trial at VCAT A residents group opposed to a Riddells Creek supermarket development hopes a fundraising art exhibition will be the perfect lead-in to an appeal against the proposal. Local artists provided almost 100 works for Getting Riddell Right’s show Tree, which was held at Dromkeen at the weekend. The group’s appeal against plans approved by Macedon Ranges council last year returned to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal yesterday and is expected to last five days. Getting Riddell Right won back the right to object to the proposal earlier this year after a Supreme Court challenge. The group had lodged an appeal on the grounds that the development did not meet relevant planning guidelines. An appeal was heard at VCAT in

September last year but was struck out on a technicality. Group president Jenny Grounds hoped to raise $10,000 with the art show, which would go towards legal costs. Dr Grounds said members knew it was difficult to win a case at VCAT. ‘‘But we are quietly confident … this development shouldn’t have been approved by council in the first place,’’ she said. The supermarket plans for 1-13 Station Street include retail shops and 179 parking spaces. The group also has concerns that the development is within 30 metres of a place of learning, with the development’s size, traffic issues and the possible loss of mature elm trees presenting problems. Molly’s memory lives on By Matt Crossman Families that have experienced the heartache of a child’s death are being encouraged to take part in a memorial service on Sunday. Sunbury mother Kellie Clohessy says it’s a great chance for parents and siblings to connect with people who truly understand their pain. Ms Clohessy’s daughter, Molly, was a few weeks short of her 12th birthday when she died after a series of seizures in 2012. Molly had Dravet syndrome, a rare form of epilepsy that affects about one in 40,000 people. Most people with this type of catastrophic epilepsy typically don’t have long lives. But Ms Clohessy said Molly, who was known for her cheekiness, shone brightly during the time she was given. ‘‘Molly was abnormally good for a child with Dravet syndrome . . . they’re usually very disabled due to the prolonged seizures that occur,” she said. She said Molly’s violent seizures could last anywhere between 40 minutes and three hours. In 2010, she suffered a series of massive seizures and was in hospital for two months. She spent much of the next 18 months recovering. ‘‘We were fortunate to have that sort of time as a seizure-free period,’’ Ms Clohessy said. ‘‘It was almost two years to the day that she had her last seizure. She spent a week in intensive care and we knew she wouldn’t be coming back to us.’’ Ms Clohessy said it had been a long road for herself, husband Mick and sons Tom, 17, and Lachie, 15. ‘‘One of the hardest things to work out when you’ve lost a child is what to say when people ask how many kids you’ve got,’’ she said. ‘‘It’s been two years, but it really does feel like yesterday, and there’d be people out there who

lost a child 30 years ago who will say the same thing.’’ Ms Clohessy said her efforts to establish Molly’s Fund for Dravet had been bittersweet. ‘‘When we have fundraisers, it’s quite emotional as we’re doing it because she’s not here,’’ she said. Ms Clohessy urged people who had lost a child to attend Sunday’s service organised by

Greenhaven Funerals. ‘‘Talking to each other is so beneficial … you realise you aren’t alone,’’ she said. The service is at Overnewton Castle, 51 Overnewton Road, Keilor, from 11am and will include a video tribute. For bookings, phone 0423 028 668. Parties line up for avenue A long-held vision for an avenue of honour between Sunbury and Diggers Rest is a step closer to reality. The planned avenue of memorial trees along Vineyard Road could also include storyboards, water fountains, a statue and signs honouring residents who fought or died at war. The idea was first proposed about 12 years ago and formally presented to Hume council eight years ago. The Anzac Memorial Walk Committee last week met with Liberal candidate for Sunbury Jo Hagan, who promised $20,000 for a feasibility study. Palmer United Party’s upper house candidate Trevor Dance also supports the campaign and has vowed to advocate for funding. Memorial walk committee president Bryce Letcher called on Labor to match the Liberal Party’s commitment. ‘‘We want to create something which is not just a memorial but an educational feature that will also beautify the entrance into town,’’ he said. ‘‘We’re looking at a combination of medium-sized trees, shrubs and bushes and smaller plants, such as kangaroo paw, to provide real variety.’’ Ms Hagan said a re-elected Napthine government would help the committee’s dream come to fruition. ‘‘An Anzac memorial walk would pay tribute to the men and women who served our country,’’ she said. LEAVES IN YOUR GUTTERS? Protect your home against fire and flooding Install AllClear Leafguard made from Colorbond® Steel AllClear Leafguard can save householders all the hassles associated with leaves blocking gutters causing overflowing and flooding and also creating a fire hazard.

AllClear Leafguard is designed especially for the collection of clean water for rain water tanks. The best way to save our valuable water is to ensure gutters are free of leaves and other debris to stop any overflow and flooding issues. Gutters fitted with AllClear Leafguard are still able to be flushed and cleaned if necessary to ensure clean and hygienic tank water all year round.

Made from Color bond® Steel AllClear Leafguard has many benefits, including protecting and prolonging the life of gutters. With AllClear Leafguard fitted on gutters gone are the days of spending hours of valuable weekend time up on a ladder cleaning gutters by hand. Keeping gutters clear of leaves prevents overflowing which causes water damage to the home and will ensure gutters last longer. AllClear Leafguard is secured under roof tiles or iron roof and to the front of the guttering. When the Leafguard is in place it cannot be seen from the ground, so it does not ruin the appearance of the roof. The threat of bushfires presents a pressing need for home owners to protect their properties as best they can especially over the summer months.

One of the ways home owners can be prepared is by ensuring their gutters are free of leaves and debris that could easily catch on fire and lead the flames to the body of the home. AllClear Leafguard is made of Colorbond® Steel – the same material as gutters – preventing the Leafguard melting in fire or perishing and becoming brittle. Leafguard helps prevent embers and burning leaves getting under the roofline. Homes in fire prone areas are always urged to get their gutters fitted with metal leafguards to protect against potential bush fire.

Australian made AllClear Leafguard has proved extremely successful over the years being recognized as the more superior Leafguard on the market in Victoria and most states in Australia. AllClear Leafguard can safely give purchases a 20 year warranty. AllClear Leafguard staff have been trained in all aspects of leaf and gutter protection to help bring this superior product to clients. Obligation free quotes and good advice are always available by phoning AllClear Leafguard & Gutter on freecall 1800 426 607 or local 03 9813 3331.

Ms Wood said the decision to tackle this year’s event was an easy one. ‘‘I think the sense of achievement at the end of the ride was a major factor,’’ she said. ‘‘We felt we could get even more out of participating in 2014, having completed one ride and knowing what to do to make it easier.’’ The cyclists meet for training rides in the Macedon Ranges about four times a week. Study pledge on intersection

Improvements to a dangerous Romsey intersection will be investigated if Labor wins the November 29 election, Macedon candidate Mary-Anne Thomas says. Opposition roads spokesman Luke Donnellan visited the intersection of Barry Street and MelbourneLancefield Road last Wednesday to announce $200,000 for a VicRoads study to determine if traffic lights or a roundabout are the most appropriate solution.

Netball rooms to be upgraded

Kyneton netballers will benefit from a $23,400 grant to upgrade changerooms at Kyneton showgrounds. The grant was announced by state Sports Minister Damian Drum during a visit to Kyneton.

Kinders on a promise

(Damjan Janevski)

Macedon Ranges Residents Association is urging state election candidates to commit to state-level protection for the shire after claiming the government broke a promise to stop the area being suburbanised. Group secretary Christine Pruneau said that when elected in 2010, the government promised to protect the shire by reconfirming a 40-year-old policy. But in a recent radio interview, Planning Minister Matthew Guy said the policy needed to be ‘‘contemporised’’. He indicated the council’s localised planning statement, adopted in September, fulfilled the government’s pledge. A council report said the statement ‘‘clearly articulated the special rural nature of the shire’’, providing clear guidance for the protection of its character and environmental qualities. Ms Pruneau said the Macedon Ranges were in ‘‘deep, deep trouble’’, with the lack of state protection opening up the possibility of development that would destroy the shire’s character. She said residents and visitors came to the area because it wasn’t like Melbourne. ‘‘It won’t stay that way without state policy protection,’’ she said. Labor candidate Mary-Anne Thomas said Mr Guy’s preference for localised planning statements had ‘‘completely failed’’.

Step up for a great night out Shane Morse, Sandra Ellis and Sharon Badily practise for a dinner dance to celebrate International Day of People with Disability. Residents of the Macedon Ranges are being invited to take part in the event, which will include a two-course meal, live DJ and vintage photo booth. Mayor Roger Jukes said the dance would celebrate the contributions and achievements of people living with disabilities. The dance is at Kyneton Bowling Club from 6pm on November 29. Tickets cost $20 for adults, $10 for youth (8-16 years) and concession card holders. Children under 8 will be admitted free. For more details, phone 1300 888 802 or visit www.mrsc.vic.gov.au/buytickets. Matt Crossman

Labor has promised $240,000 for two Macedon Ranges kindergartens if it wins the state election. Opposition spokeswoman for children Jenny Mikakos said the ALP would invest $120,000 to rebuild outdoor play spaces at Romsey kindergarten and Swinburne Avenue kindergarten in Gisborne. Macedon candidate Mary-Anne Thomas said life was getting harder for young families and local kinders were falling apart.

On a block of about 2000 square metres, this timeless charmer combines cottage cuteness with modern spaciousness. It has all the ingredients to create a relaxed warmth: floorboards, exposed brick and slate – and quirky dormer angles upstairs. And the surrounding gardens are a wonderful mix of chic style and country-style fruitfulness. Two upstairs bedrooms (with robes) share a skylit bathroom and flank a rumpus room; another two are downstairs and share a bathroom with a tub designed for lay-back relaxation. An appealing lounge room has a wood heater, while a family-meals area abuts the kitchen which has a stack of timber cupboards including beneath an island bench. The back verandah combines with a covered deck to provide spots to soak up soothing garden views. A split-system, gas heating, ducted vacuum, chook house, a productive orchard, vegie garden (tank water keeps gardens flourishing), a shed and double garage are other perks.

Minutes from Kyneton, Woodend and Trentham and within a 55-minute commute to Melbourne CBD, “Knapdale” is a high-quality small farm of about 16.19 hectares with infrastructure to support sheep, cattle, horses and hay production. It has an assortment of sheds for machinery, storage and animals, and stockyards and a productive bore (town water is also connected). The house has four bedrooms and a study; the main bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe. A large lounge-dining room is next door to the kitchen and outdoor relaxation and entertainment is well catered for in a fantastic detached pavilion linked with the house via a deck under the shade of a towering pin oak. The pavilion is fully enclosed and takes in views of leafy surrounds and wonderful views of the district. Gardens are pretty as a picture and there’s a double carport.

Beautifully appointed throughout, this modern abode close to schools, shops and sporting facilities will win over families looking for separate space for the kids, new-shine intact and low-maintenance outdoor spaces. Four bedrooms (three with built-in robes) include the main with walk-in robe and smart en suite. One of the living rooms is cosy and carpeted; it’s set up with a theatre system. The other living zone of a tiled family-meals area wraps around a kitchen with classic black and white decor and vibrant red glass splashback; it has an island servery bench, a two-door pantry, wall oven, 900mm gas cooktop and a coffee bar. Gas ducted heating, evaporative cooling and double-glazed windows take the sting out of Woodend seasons. An integrated outdoor room looks out to a landscaped backyard which is securely fenced. An hour from Melbourne and with easy freeway access, the property also has an integrated double garage with internal access.

A substantial rural holding of about 40.87 hectares, “Barega” combines a productive country lifestyle with the convenience of proximity to city services and schools. The classic homestead with wraparound verandah has four bedrooms, the main with shared access to a large bathroom with a raised circular basin atop marble. Another bathroom is handily positioned just off the back verandah so there’s no tracking dirt through the house following paddock activities. Living areas include a lounge room and large, tiled family-meals area with fireplace. The kitchen has distressed-white cabinetry and stainless-steel wall oven, cooktop and dishwasher. Timber-lined cathedral ceilings with exposed beams, colonial-style windows and lovely floorboards define the architecture of this abode, which is a fine retreat after a hard day’s work. Surrounding level, well-fenced paddocks are ideal for grazing or cropping and there’s a large machinery shed/workshop.

Price: $889,000

On about 0.4 hectares of stunning botanical beauty in a blue-chip locale, this beautifully formed house built in the ’90s oozes class and has been designed to a standard that puts it in the timeless bracket. There’s nothing flashy about this place, instead it has something finer: a quiet elegance that will see it outlast easy come– easy go trendiness. Several rooms are the beneficiary of some top-notch chippie work evidenced in customised cabinetry built from Tasmanian ash, a wood used for all window frames and architraves – and it also appears in small snippets elsewhere to cleverly reinforce

the motif. It’s this type of detail that cements the home’s quality and allows it to live up to the astonishing surrounds on view from all angles. Equally gracious living areas are a lounge-dining room bisected by a brick fireplace, and tiled meals and carpeted family rooms. It’s in the latter that the cabinetry really struts its stuff; its wide expanse caters for concealed storage, open display shelves and a liquor cabinet coupled with a bar fridge. This room also has a Heat Charm wood heater tucked under a copper canopy,. The kitchen has a two-door pantry, dishwasher, wall oven and an electric

cooktop under a concealed rangehood. Four bedrooms include the main just off the entry foyer which has mirrored built-in and walk-in robes, and a two-way en suite. Across the way is a study with, again, customised cabinetry. Other bedrooms (each with robe) down a tiled hallway at the back include one with a door to a large gabled, vine-adorned pergola – just the start of backyard treats. It also has an en suite, making it perfect for guest or extended family member. These rooms are near the main bathroom and laundry which flank a two-way toilet; there’s also a great little mud room here with storage galore. Through a rose-clad arbour and down

rustic steps, the lower terrace has a wonderful weatherboard cottage-style studio with elevated verandah. Tailor-made for an artist or hobbyist, it has glossy floorboards, two recessed skylights, limed timber-lined walls, a pitched plaster ceiling, loads of cupboards and a sink. Gardens (with irrigation system) are a feast for the senses, with a profusion of multi-hued exotic trees, original eucalypts, curvilinear lawns, dense shrubbery, inviting nooks and birdsong. Bliss. “Watervale” also has a Colorbond garden shed and a remote-controlled triple garage. Carole Levy

FEATURES FOR FAMILIES

Sat 10.30-11.00am 4/36-38 Darbyshire St, Sunbury

Buying your first home as a young or soon-to-be family is an exciting prospect, but how do you know what’s right for you? Double or single storey? A home that’s got smaller rooms but is spread across two storeys may prove to be a more desirable family home than a single-level property. The top floor of double storey homes can be used as a space for children’s bedrooms and play areas, while living space is downstairs. By contrast, you might favour expansive open plan living, so a single level home could suit. In this case, it’s preferable to buy a property that has bedrooms and living space at opposite ends of the house. Know your area’s amenities -There’s no point in buying a picture perfect family home if your children will end up having to travel long distances to early childcare, primary or high school. Looking into the future at schooling options could save you heartache down the track. Run around space - It’s no secret that kids who have run around all day, whether at home or school, tend to settle better in the evening. While it’s important to have ample interior space, an outdoor area for a spot of backyard cricket or children to run around in can be incredibly valuable. A second bathroom -Avoid the stress of trying to coordinate the family’s ablutions with a single bathroom and buy a property that has two bathrooms, or at least separates the toilet and shower.

DESIGN A NURSERY ON A BUDGET

Sat 1.30-2.00pm 5 Rye Crt, Romsey

Of all the home decorating and renovating you may undertake in your life, chances are designing a nursery for your little bundle of joy will take the cake when it comes to the love you put into it. Fortunately for new parents working on a budget, there are plenty of ways to design a nursery without draining your bank account. It’s not used, it’s vintage -There’s no reason why quality second-hand items can’t be an integral part of your nursery design.Whether you use furniture from your own childhood, toys given from friends and family, or special finds bought at thrift shops, used items can provide nurseries with a charming, vintage feel. Of course you’ll want to use brand new buys for bedding and other crucial items, but there’s nothing stopping you from making that brightly coloured side table you spotted at your local second-hand store a sunny part of your new baby’s room. Make it personal- Buying new paintings to hang in your baby’s room isn’t necessarily a bad idea, but why not make the space more personal? Family photographs can perfect decorations, as can homemade arts and crafts. Keep the baby in mind - It’s easy to get swept up in the excitement of designing your baby’s nursery, but keep in mind what you’re doing for our child and what you’re doing for you. After all, will your baby really notice the difference between an expensive toy chest and a common box used for storage? At the end of the day, it should be the baby you’re buying for, not yourself.

“MeMories” Last week we paused to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the First World War, “the War to End all Wars”. I would like to share with you my Mother’s memories, not of the war, but of its end. Written in her own words and taken from her memoirs here are my Mother’s memories of the end of World War 1, 1914 – 1918. “The news of peace must have reached Devonport on a Monday because Mother was doing the washing. She was doing the washing on this particular Monday when some young people rushed up to the house to say “Mrs Lonie, you are wanted at West Devonport, peace has been declared and there is to be a service of Thanksgiving now, on the esplanade. You are wanted to play the organ.” For once the washing was forsaken. We all rallied round helping to get Mother and ourselves tidied, and then hurried down to the ferry and across to the esplanade on the west bank of the river. There, our Mother played for Devonport’s first Armistice Service.” My Mother was eight years old at the end of “The War to End all Wars”, she then lived through World War 2, the Korean conflict, Vietnam and so many more conflicts and we have to ask – what have we learnt? We must never forget those who fought for us and those who fight today.

45 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 18, 2014

MACEDONRANGES.STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

Sunbury back on track By Tara Murray Sunbury bounced back in the best possible way in the Victorian Bowls pennant with a victory over Rosamond. After losing last week in division 2, section 1, Sunbury had an easy win this week, 90-69, against its rival. Sunbury won two of its rinks and tied a third, to take home 15 of the 18 points on offer. Mark and Elise Cowan won their rinks, John O’Dwyer lost his by one shot, and Brad Willoughby, who was filling in as skip for the day, drew his rink. “Brad has formerly skippered for Sunbury and Essendon but usually isn’t available on Saturdays,”said Sunbury’s Dave Glennon. “He had five dead ends, which is very usual. We were lucky he was available to fill in.” In the Central Highlands Bowls division, Woodend and Lancefield played out a thriller. The teams split the rinks two apiece and it came down to shots, with Woodend winning by one, 105-104. Kyneton Golf got back on the winners’ list, defeating Romsey 102-95, while Kyneton smashed Trentham, winning all four rinks on the way to a 124-67 shot win. In the other match, Bacchus Marsh defeated Gisborne 100-87, after winning three rinks and tying the fourth. Golf remains on top of the ladder on 77, nine points clear of Bacchus Marsh. Woodend and Kyneton are a further point back. In other news, Kyneton’s Chloe Stewart is the world under-25 women’s singles champion after beating fellow Australian Kristine Krstic 21-17 on Sunday to take out the title.

SPORT

Thunder seeks a bigger bang It will be a new-look East Sunbury on and off the field in the Essendon District Football League next season. After struggling in division 2 in its first two years in the competition, the Thunder has made a number of changes in attempts to be more competitive. The first move was signing Steve Grey as coach. Grey, was formerly coach of the club’s cricketers. Joining him is reserves coach Mark Doherty, who was at Sunbury Lions, and Daryl Cartwright, who takes on the under-18.5 coaching role. Grey said that as well as establishing an experienced coaching line-up, the Thunder believed it had added depth to its playing list. “We’ve recruited a lot of young kids to build our under-18½s side and grow from there,” he said. “We’re hoping to sign players from Aberfeldie and Greenvale and a couple from Sunbury Lions. “They haven’t signed yet, but they’re going to do the pre-season with us.” The club is also hopeful of signing a couple who played in Horsham. “We have to try to grow,” Grey said. “We don’t have too much money and we want to build the youth of the club.” Grey says he has high hopes for next season. “I’m looking at finals. We need a break-out year. Hopefully, we can give it a good crack the year after.” Tara Murray

Elise Cowan won her rink 21-20 against Rosamond. (Shawn Smits)
