Film stands and delivers By Matt Crossman

The Macedon Ranges appears likely to receive state-level planning protection, with both major parties promising to protect the shire from inappropriate development. As reported by Star Weekly, Macedon Ranges Residents Association has been urging state election candidates to commit to state-level protection after claiming the government broke a promise to reconfirm a 40-year-old policy. MRRA secretary Christine Pruneau said the lack of state protection opened up the possibility of development that would destroy the shire’s character. But on Friday, both the Liberal Party and ALP said they would deliver planning protection consistent with the historic Statement of Planning Protection No. 8 (SPP8). Northern Victoria Liberal MP Amanda Millar said their policy would provide strong planning protection. ‘‘A re-elected Napthine government will … work with both Macedon Ranges Shire Council and locals to ensure that the LPS for Macedon Ranges puts SPP8 in to state level protection.’’ Just a few hours later, ALP Macedon candidate Mary-Anne Thomas announced Labor’s commitment to protect the Macedon Ranges. ‘‘Labor will give the community back its voice, so we can protect our region and take a responsible, consultative and long-term approach to planning.” Matt Crossman

The director of a ‘bushranger Western’ filmed in the Macedon Ranges has signed a deal to turn it into a full-length feature. The Legend of Ben Hall, filmed over three weeks in August this year, was initially crowdfunded as a short-film project. But its makers are preparing for another six weeks of filming early next year after winning the support of Sydney and Los Angeles-based Odin’s Eye Entertainment. Director and producer Matthew Holmes says he hopes the uniqueness of the film, which blends drama and action, will lead to success here and overseas. ‘‘Unique films usually go one of two ways,” Melbourne-based Holmes said. “Either they’re so unique that no one goes to see them or they’re unique in a way that attracts attention.” Gisborne actor William Lee is one of many Macedon Ranges residents involved in the film. Lee, 23, won the role of bushranger John Dunn, a member of the gang which carried out hundreds of robberies in New South Wales before Hall was shot dead by police in 1865. Dunn, the youngest gang member, was just 19 when he was hanged at Darlinghurst jail. Lee, a full-time actor who has worked mainly on short films, said he was excited to find himself a major part of a feature-length project. Kyneton resident Leslie Binns is production designer, while Spring Hill’s Bruce Gleeson and Evanne Chessom play horse wranglers. Many other locals feature as extras. The film is due to be released next year to coincide with the 150th anniversary of Hall’s death. A second round of crowdfunding is under way. To donate, visit goo.gl/eqQ17J.

Tales of sibling love

Riddells bid at VCAT hearing

(Damjan Janevski)

By Matt Crossman A book exploring the remarkable bonds between Macedon Ranges residents living with disability and their siblings is about to be launched in Kyneton. The first book by Woodend’s Angela Cox, Me & My Brother: Stories of Special Siblings in the Macedon Ranges, features 12 sets of siblings of varying ages and backgrounds. Skyrah, 1, and brother Lincoln, 5, face a daily regime of physiotherapy and medication to manage their cystic fibrosis. Beverley, 75, still feels immense pain after the sudden death of her intellectually disabled sister, Helen, more than 30 years ago. Susan, 57, faced the heartbreaking decision to put younger sister Jane, who has cerebral palsy, into care after their mother’s death. Ms Cox said the book gave an insight into what it was like living with a sibling with a disability. She said that while it was a difficult subject, the stories were a celebration of the unique bonds between the siblings. Ms Cox is well qualified to write such a book; her younger brother Andrew has Down syndrome. ‘‘My brother recently turned 40 and moved out of my mother’s home and is now looked after by carers [in Perth],’’ she said. ‘‘It made me think a lot about him and about our relationship. I left Perth to study, I was fairly ambitious … I felt a bit torn, feeling some guilt and a sense of responsibility.’’ Ms Cox, who advised the Department of Human Services on the rollout of the National Disability Insurance Scheme, said she also became frustrated with bureaucracy. ‘‘I remember one day reading some draft legislation. It was all correct, but there was just nothing about the families,’’ she said. She said her history, and a notice in a church

newsletter about a community grants scheme, led to the project. The final product is a mix of words and striking photographs by local photographers Kim Selby and Deborah Mullins. ‘‘Something that came up in every interview was, ‘they’re just my brother’,’’ Ms Cox said. “That’s the beautiful message. Among family, there’s no disability. There are different dynamics … but what kept coming up is that

they wouldn’t have their sibling any other way.’’ Me & My Brother will be launched at Macedon Ranges council’s Kyneton offices from 5.30pm on Wednesday, December 3. Photos used in the book will be exhibited in Kyneton, Gisborne, Woodend and Romsey. The book costs $29.95 and will be available from local bookstores and online. Proceeds will go to support agencies St Luke’s Anglicare, Windarring and Cobaw Community Health.

Arguments for and against a Riddells Creek supermarket development have been presented to a state tribunal. The appeal by community group Getting Riddell Right against plans approved by Macedon Ranges council last year returned to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal last Monday. The hearing was set to take five days, but the taking of evidence wrapped up late on Thursday. VCAT members were seen visiting the Station Street site on Friday. VCAT decisions are normally reached within four weeks, but with Christmas approaching Getting Riddell Right believes a decision may not be reached until February. The group won back the right to object to the proposal after a Supreme Court challenge earlier this year. It had lodged an appeal on behalf of Riddells Creek Neighbourhood House on the grounds that the development did not meet relevant planning guidelines. An appeal was heard at VCAT in September last year but was struck out on a technicality. Group president Jenny Grounds said she was confident the community’s case for a ‘‘better designed’’ commercial development had been adequately presented. At last week’s hearing, the developer presented some changes, including alterations to an entry road. Matt Crossman

An art to park planning Artists are being invited to share their ideas on functional or decorative features at the new Kyneton Community Park. The design of the park, at the rear of the botanic gardens, is being led by Macedon Ranges council and the Kyneton Community Park group. Group president Amy Cockroft says the group is looking for elements such as gates, art walls, fencing or sculptures. ‘‘The design must reflect and celebrate the area’s history and local stories,’’ she said. Ms Cockroft said the group wanted a park for, and of, the people of Kyneton. ‘‘This is one way of ensuring that happens.’’

Thesing, Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group, at 20 Nov. For the most recent scores visit the website.

Mosaic artist Kathryn Portelli, who has been commissioned to create an artwork for the park, encouraged people to share their ideas. The Pipers Creek resident is working on a mosaic designed to transport park visitors back in time by portraying the area’s rich heritage. She said many people were unaware that the park had, at various stages, been home to grazing cows, a fish hatchery, Scout jamborees and even a tram car. Expressions of interest close this Friday. Expo a jog to memory Residents of Riddells Creek don’t have to think back very far to realise the threat bushfires pose, which is why the town’s CFA is expecting a big turnout for its annual expo this Saturday. Meagan Upsher, who lives near the town, said that despite being a long-term resident of the area, she was shocked when the February blaze came to within 200 metres of her property. She said the expo was a great way to ensure that residents, particularly those living in the town, didn’t become complacent. ‘‘The level of detail the crew go into is really reassuring,’’ Ms Upsher said. ‘‘There’s so much on offer, and there are no dumb questions. You can never have too much information.’’ Brigade member Alex Batty said the expo would provide important tips about

preparation and survival. ‘‘Having all the emergency services and exhibitors in one space allows people to ask as many questions as possible, which can go some way to informing them on bushfire plans and decision-making on high-risk fire days,” he said. The brigade’s trucks were among 28 fire vehicles used to fight a blaze in Toolern Vale, which led to a watch and act alert being issued for Gisborne South last Tuesday afternoon. The fire burnt 40 hectares before being controlled. Saturday’s expo, from 10am-4pm, will showcase tools and items to help people prepare or defend their properties. the grey-carpeted lounge room, then the hallway ducks left to an open study. The extra-big, tiled living hub at hall’s end is wonderfully light-filled, courtesy of a wall of windows and a slider to an integrated outdoor room where the timber decking extends out to an elevated, fenced deck with steps down to the pristine side and back yards – more of that perfect grass, and garden beds behind sandstone retainers. The smart, glossy kitchen has a recessed skylight and an angled horseshoe-shaped island bench topped with mocha-toned stone and sitting under feature pendant lights; a glass

splashback, walk-in pantry and an integrated microwave, dishwasher, 900mm cooker and canopy rangehood each sporting the Blanco label are other treats for the family cooks. The family-meals zone has another set of glazed double doors opening to a carpeted rumpus room where kids’ noise can be closed off when needed, a sensible facet many modern houses neglect to take into account. SNAPSHOT Thank you Whorlow’s I would like to thank all the team at LJ Whorlow First National for all their efforts when selling my home. The whole team were always happy, enthusiastic and nothing was ever too much trouble. Thankfully my home sold in 3 weeks and we received a great price! I would have no hesitation in recommending your services to all my friends and family.Thank you and all the best.

Ms S Hoskins 3 TIPS FOR CLEARING CLUTTER Make it a race -By setting yourself a competitive goal, you can breezily clear through old clothes in under ten minutes. Simply get yourself a rubbish bag, take on the piles of clothes that have not been sorted through, and see how quickly you can fill it with clothes to give away. By giving yourself a time limit you won’t just have a quick clean, you’ll spend less time umm-ing and ahh-ing over whether to get rid of items or not - which we all know is one of the easiest ways to procrastinate! Take one item at a time - Pick a shelf, drawer, or countertop in your home - any one will do - and clear it of everything. Find things you will throw out, and work out exactly what you want to keep. By doing this to just one shelf you’ll get an idea for exactly what items you want to keep, be able to see instant results of decluttering, and complete it all within five minutes! Categorise your items-Rubbish, charity, or keep - most items you own will fit into one of these three categories. Have a bin or box for each and when you take on small cleaning jobs like organising a cupboard, put everything in one of these. You’ll develop your own system, but make sure everything has a destination. With these tips you’ll start finding more space in your home extremely quickly, and be able to get on with the important things - like relaxing in your newly cleared living space.

43 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 25, 2014

MACEDONRANGES.STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

Super over, super finish By Tara Murray A super over helped kicked off the opening round of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s T20 competition .  .  . and it provided the excitement and thrill expected. Teams from all clubs are part of the competition, which pits the McIntyre Cup clubs against each other in early rounds, while clubs from B-grade to E-grade do battle in the initial stages before coming together for finals. The match between Diggers Rest Bulla and St Anthonys provided the round’s highlight, with scores tied on 94 after both had batted. St Anthonys got the win courtesy of the super over. Ashfield beat Lancefield, despite failing to bat out its overs. Led by captain Jason King, Ashfield made 119 and was bowled out with 15 balls to spare. Opener King top-scored with 42. Lancefield made only 8-107 in its 20 overs. Sunbury recorded its first victory since round one of the McIntyre Cup, defeating cross-town rival Sunbury United. Jason McGann, who has resumed the captain’s role for Sunbury, was the star with 89 of his team’s 6-163. United fell three runs short of victory, finishing at 8-161. Wallan’s senior side got its first victory of the year in any format, easily accounting for Romsey. Batting first, Wallan made 6-138 before bowling Romsey out for 70. Gisborne defeated Bacchus Marsh on the final ball of the match, passing 105 with six wickets in hand. Macedon got its second win over Rupertswood within a week, chasing down Rupo’s total of 5-129 in the last over. For more photos of the weekend’s matches go to www.sunbury.starweekly.com.au.

It took until the 19th hole for a winner to be decided in Romsey Golf Club’s John Laing Shield. After an even first nine, Les Gaunt held a three-hole lead over Dave Muller after 14. But a lost ball and some good play allowed Muller to square the match after 18 holes. On the 19th, Gaunt hit the green with his shot, while Muller was six metres off. Muller chipped to a metre, leaving Gaunt a five-metre putt for victory. He duly sank it for a birdie and took home the shield. In the par competition, it was a day of mixed scores. Groups which got on the course early avoided the wind and their scores showed it. Pat Chisholm and Kevin Dunn put in the best two rounds of the day to finish first and second. Club captain Tony Freeman won the C-grade handicap event at the Marysville tournament and now sits second in the Dalhousie District Player of the Year tally.

Jason King top-scored for Ashfield in the opening round of the T20 competition. (Wayne Hawkins)
