Fatality-free holiday on cop’s Christmas wishlist Police are urging motorists to play it safe and help achieve a fatality-free holiday period on Sunbury and Macedon Ranges roads. Sergeant Geoff Neil, of Macedon Ranges highway patrol, said it was time to exercise extra caution behind the wheel. ‘‘We’re urging people to do the right thing, be patient and think and plan ahead,’’ he said. ‘‘When there’s a death on our roads, it’s usually the result of a poor decision by

somebody and that’s why people must be vigilant.’’ Transport Accident Commission data shows there have been eight fatalities on Macedon Ranges roads this year and four in neighbouring Hume. Sergeant Neil warned there would be an ongoing blitz targeting drivers who were speeding, drink driving or using mobile phones.

‘‘For those people who insist on driving home after having a few drinks after work on a Friday night, we’ll be there to meet you afterwards.’’ Sergeant Neil said employers organising Christmas parties should also think about their responsibilities and consider arranging buses and low-alcohol drinks. Sunbury Sergeant John Letchford said police would continue to crack down on driving

offences. He said officers were also clamping down on parties to make sure they didn’t get out of control. ‘‘Parents particularly are warned that advertising a party on social media can be very dangerous,’’ he said, following recent incidents which resulted in significant damage caused by gatecrashers. School bracing for the final bell

Student faces second blow A year 11 Macedon Grammar student who lived through the heartache of the 2012 collapse of Melton’s Mowbray College says she was shattered to learn of the woes that threaten to close her new school. Gisborne’s Natasha Smith, 16, says the past week has been extremely tough for students, with their short-term educational futures suddenly threatened by a dark cloud. Natasha, who wants to become a lawyer, could be forced to travel 45 minutes each way to attend another school that offers the International Baccalaureate course, which she is halfway through. ‘‘We have such a close group. It’s pretty scary to think we might be separated,’’ she says. ‘‘It’s no easier the second time around.’’ Natasha says Macedon Grammar is a great school. ‘‘The teachers are very supportive,” she says. “They only want what’s best for us and they work really hard to help us achieve our goals. ‘‘Going to another school is something we have to consider but I hope it doesn’t come to that.’’ Natasha Smith

The families of distressed Macedon Grammar School students remain hopeful that the school will not be forced to shut its doors at the end of the current term. The non-denominational Christian P-12 school, with about 150 students, has been given until December 15 to prove its viability or face closure as the dual threat of long-rumoured financial problems and falling enrolments mounts. An emergency meeting was called on November 21 after Macedon Grammar was handed a ‘show cause’ notice by the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority. Star Weekly spoke to many parents of past and present students, almost all of whom spoke in glowing terms of the school’s staff and programs. Macedon Grammar, which was founded by Dr Alan Rose in 1979, is the only school in the Macedon Ranges to offer the International Baccalaureate diploma. ‘‘There’s a lot of very distressed children and families … none of us know what’s going to happen here,’’ a mother, who did not want to be named, said. ‘‘It’s been a great school; I really can’t say anything detrimental about it. ‘‘My kids have done so well and they really love going to school. ‘‘We’re just hoping there’s some way it can remain open.’’ While many parents said they would continue to support the school, others were already seeking places for their children elsewhere, prompting fears of a mass exodus. Another mother, who also did not want her name published, said she pulled her children out of Macedon Grammar earlier this year as rumours of financial difficulties began to swirl. ‘‘Everyone was starting to feel very wary that the school was having trouble,’’ she said. ‘‘It was unsettling the children. I thought, I’m not going to hang around and wait.’’ Contacted by Star Weekly, Dr Rose said it would be inappropriate for him to comment. The school did not respond to questions by deadline.

Cattle as fireys’ friends By Matt Crossman The state government will be urged to provide insurance cover to allow farmers to conduct roadside cattle grazing ahead of bushfire seasons. Macedon Ranges council last week unanimously supported a notice of motion from Cr John Letchford which called on the government to accept liability for pre-season grazing activities to reduce fire fuel. A report to the council said changes to land and resource management, and a shift to risk-based emergency management, meant there was a need to review roadside fire prevention to keep pace with community expectations. Cr Letchford said this could include a more natural, environmentally friendly process such as grazing. ‘‘We’ve seen from previous fires that roadsides do act as a funnel,’’ he said. ‘‘Roadside grazing is certainly something that has been done successfully in the past and there’s no reason it can’t be done in the future. It is fire prevention at its best – it’s natural.’’ The request to government comes as the council continues its program to slash more than 1000 kilometres of its 1700 kilometres of roadsides ahead of the bushfire season. The council’s $150,000 roadside slashing program, which began on November 22, is expected to be completed by this Friday. VicRoads regional director, Mal Kersting, said the authority’s program to reduce fuel along the shire’s major roads, including the Calder Freeway, was also advanced and expected to finish by the same date. The council’s community safety manager, Anne-Louise Lindner, said roadside slashing had to be completed close to the start of the fire season. ‘‘The best time of year to slash

Contractor Jason Jacobson takes a breather at Youngs Road, Lauriston. (Matt Crossman)

is when the grass has started to dry out,’’ she said. ‘‘This way, it’s less likely to grow again and require additional slashing.’’ Ms Lindner said the council’s slashing program targeted high-traffic roads near grasslands and town boundaries.

Smoke was visible in the Macedon Ranges at the weekend as planned burns continued. The Department of Primary Industries and Environment, Parks Victoria and CFA planned to burn 58 hectares about two kilometres west of Macedon to reduce forest fuels.

Nine arrested in drug raids Drugs, weapons and a stolen car were seized and nine people were arrested in raids in Romsey, Riddells Creek and Sunbury last Thursday. The raids were part of an ongoing operation targeting ice trafficking. A Riddells Creek man, 47, was charged with firearms possession and a Sunbury man, 39, was charged with possessing cannabis and an imitation firearm. A Sunbury man, 24, was charged with possessing methamphetamine and another Sunbury man, 40, with possessing cannabis and theft of a motor car. A Sunbury woman, 19, was charged with drug and weapons offences and a warrant was executed for a Sunbury woman, 20, for failing to appear in court. These six people were released on bail. A Sunbury man, 25, was cautioned for possessing cannabis, while a 22-year-old Sunbury man was remanded after being charged with burglary and theft. A Sunbury woman, 22, was helping police with their inquiries. Inspector Steve White said the raids were the result of information from the public. “We encourage the community to tell us who is trafficking drugs and we will act decisively,” he said, “The community can be assured the information they provide us about these activities will be acted on confidentially.” Anyone with any information should phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Nellie, a breed apart

Family support for holidays

Nellie Patterson plans to start her own line of Charolais cattle, a breed raised for their beef and known for their distinguishable white coat. The 18-year-old from Riddells Creek has just finished her certificate III in agriculture at Salesian College, where she completed year 12 this year, and now wants to add to her 15 head of cattle grazing on her parents’ property. Ms Patterson also works part-time for her parents’ construction property and is breaking in one of her brumbies in an effort to sell it before the end of the year. “It’s pretty hectic all the time,” she said. Last month she was among a group of students awarded for their outstanding work and achievement at the Hume/ Whittlesea VET/VCAL/SBAT Awards. The ceremony is organised by Hume Whittlesea Local Learning and Employment Network to recognise secondary students who go above and beyond in vocational studies. Roxburgh Park’s Daniel Raiti, 18, was nominated for making the most of his work experience. He completed two work placements, one at an air-conditioning company and another installing motorised gates. When asked why he thought he was nominated, the Penola College student said it probably came down to initiative. “When a problem arose I tried to fix it myself before asking someone else because I have a bit of background knowledge,” he said.

A Macedon Ranges mental health support service is encouraging parents to equip themselves with knowledge to help their teenagers through the summer holidays. PS My Family Matters has organised a community forum to show people how to prepare their families to tackle problems that might arise over Christmas-New Year, which can be a particularly difficult time for teens with a mental illness. Experts say the extended time away from school and friends, along with more time at home, can create feelings of isolation and increase existing fears. The free forum, Surviving the Silly Season, will be held at Gisborne Secondary School this Wednesday night. The event will include information about how to best communicate with a teenager about mental health issues and where to go for help. Panel members will include a GP, a psychologist and a school counsellor. Their presentations will be followed by an open discussion. Group president Tamara Wilson says the forum will give carers a better understanding of early warning signs and their options for taking action. ‘‘We want people in the Macedon Ranges to know that they’re not alone,’’ she said. ‘‘Many of us have experience with this issue and we want to share our experience and insights with others.’’ Wednesday’s forum starts at 7pm. Kismet Park Primary School’s grade 5/6 team won the Victorian schools championship in defeating Berwick Fields in the grand final, 8-0. Physical education teacher Bev Keenan said the win was especially sweet, being the school’s first championship in any team sport. It’s Christmas At Autobarn Sunbury!

A quiet word to Santa

(Wayne Hawkins)

Sunbury families are being urged to think twice about buying children mini-bikes for Christmas, with police warning there will be no mercy to people caught riding unregistered motorcycles on roads and reserves. Sergeant John Letchford said people needed to be aware of the rules, and some bikes could not be registered. He said there were sizeable penalties for people caught riding without a licence and parents of children caught illegally riding mini-bikes could also be hit with impoundment costs.

Anne Fewster, Elizabeth Pentony and Nicky Gallus

Food fills Santa’s sleigh A Sunbury-based support service has urged people to donate to its annual Christmas appeal, with job losses, welfare cuts and rising living costs driving a significant increase in the number of Sunbury and Macedon Ranges families seeking help putting food on the table. CareWorks SunRanges manager Nicky Gallus said residents who weren’t finding the going quite so tough could help make Christmas Day memorable for families in need. Non-perishable food items can be placed in a donation cage at Sunbury Square shopping centre, while money for meat vouchers can be deposited in donation tins. The service’s 25 regular volunteers have welcomed the help of five new helpers and are working days of four to eight hours to meet

demand. Ms Gallus said that after handing out close to 120 Christmas hampers in 2013, CareWorks aimed to deliver 150 packages this year. ‘‘The Sunbury community is extremely generous, but as the need increases each year we need help to meet that challenge,’’ she said. For the first time, hampers will include meat vouchers thanks to the generosity of Sunbury’s Tenderfresh Meats and pupils of Red Rock Christian College. In October, Star Weekly reported that the number of food parcels provided by CareWorks to struggling families had soared from about 180 in July to 227 in September. Matt Crossman

Picture this: You pull up under the porte cochere, or perhaps park in the double garage before entering through the laundry (which has walls of cabinetry), room lights turning on automatically as you wend your way to the main bedroom. You disrobe in your fitted dressing room, then head for a shower under one of the two showerheads in your chic en suite, preparing for an evening to be spent with friends. the inviting poolside cabana has the built-in “Esky” nicely chilled. If the evening turns cool, you can fire up the poolside gas log fire. The glam outdoor kitchen/bar will deliver pizzas from the cast-iron wood-fired oven, and beers from the two taps are icy-cold to go with a meal cooked on the six-burner barbecue. Music plays from speakers throughout house and grounds. As the evening grows older, your friends will join you in your poolside theatre room, with stacker doors open to catch a breeze, while viewing a movie on a 120” screen, a chilled white in hand served from the wet bar. But before everyone is ready to kick back, a game of tennis on the upper

terrace’s floodlit court is called for. If there are tiny tots around, there’s always the nearby cubbyhouse and playground to explore. Yes, entertainment reaches new heights at this beautifully appointed spread. Inside, lavish space (about 40 squares of living) is not the only treat. Three extra-large bedrooms, each with their own fitted dressing room, wrap around a tiled children’s retreat with courtyard access. These share a big two-way bathroom with a spa. Off the grand-sized entry foyer, a home office (with separate access from the front) is decked out with loads of cabinetry which matches the style found in kitchen and laundry.

Next to a huge living hub (with a wall of stacker doors to the courtyard), the sleek kitchen is well appointed, with black granite benchtops, Smeg appliances, a large walk-in pantry and servery to courtyard. State-of-the-art electronics are employed throughout (CBUS, “Sonos” and “Push” systems); there’s a freestanding garage/ workshop with three-phase power that also runs in-house ducted heating and cooling which couple with in-slab electric heating; and two tanks feed an automatic irrigation system to landscaped gardens on the block of about 0.4 hectares. A DO LIST VERSUS A DONE LIST TO DO lists are always there telling us what we haven’t as yet done, what we may not be finding we have time for, and what we need to try and get done as soon as possible. This can be quite stressful to say the least (especially if we don’t have tools to manage our TO DO list so that it doesn’t create overwhelm) On the other hand, a DONE list can be a fantastic tool for motivation and productivity, a way to track your progress and give yourself a pat on the back at jobs done. I know which I would prefer to look at at the end of each day – how about you? WhyTO DO lists can hurt - people struggle with feeling like they are not getting anywhere when organising their homes and lives. It seems far too large a task to ever complete, and the never ending nature of it can be totally overwhelming. When you feel like this it’s all too easy to give up – and that is where the issue comes. People tend to focus naturally on what they haven’t done rather than what they have done. We focus on the negative (things that need doing) rather than the positive (things that we have achieved) all too much in this world – and sometimes it’s good to take a break and switch things round a little. We focus on the negative (things that need doing) rather than the positive (things that we have achieved) all too much in this world – and sometimes it’s good to take a break and switch things round a little. So, today it’s time to give yourself a break and create yourself a DONE list

SELLING YOUR HOME OVER CHRISTMAS Don’t fret if you’re trying to sell your home as the tinsel’s going up.There are some little known advantages to selling through Christmas and NewYear. There are challenges to selling your property through Christmas and the new year. Many agents close up shop and have a break, people get distracted with presents and parties, and let’s face it… most of us are just plain exhausted. But if you find yourself selling over the holidays, don’t despair. In some ways, it can be a good thing. You just need to know where your advantages lie. Spring fallout - The Spring selling season is winding down, and many who’ve parted with their home are now on the hunt for their next property. If the season was competitive they’ll be a good number of people who missed out on their dream home and need to close the deal before the end of the year. Buyer accessibility - Though it’s a busy time of year, most people have more time up their sleeve to scout properties they’ve had an eye on. Normal work schedules make viewing lots of properties a challenge. As workload and commitments slow down, motivated buyers have much more time to search through properties that appeal and get out to see them. Less competition - Selling at the height of Spring or Autumn means you’ll need to work hard to stand out from a crowd. There are usually less properties on the market over Christmas and New Year, meaning motivated buyers will have fewer prospects to tempt them. Milk the fact you’re one of a special few - May Santa deliver the perfect buyer for you!

THE RIGHT PREPARATION Here are some tips that have proven to be invaluable to the successful home seller. The right preparation and just a little investment, whether it be time or money spent on sprucing up your home, can deliver significant financial results. First National is familiar with, and understands, differing buyer requirements. To help us get you the best result for your home, we have provided some tips that have proven to be invaluable to the successful home seller. •Tidy up the garden- Dig out weeds, put mulch on the garden beds, keep paths and the driveway swept, prune and shape trees and shrubs, and make sure rubbish bins are clean and tucked away. •Consider re-configuring rooms- If you are advertising a three bedroom home for sale then that is what people will be coming to see. Consider re-organising the rooms for the sale to show them to their best advantage. •Remember first impressions last- Set the scene for your prospective buyer. Draw attention to your home’s best features by displaying fresh flowers and hanging decorative hand towels in the bathroom. •Get rid of the clutter- Crowded shelves and drawers can make rooms and storage space seem cluttered and smaller. Consider putting non-essential items in storage throughout the sale period.

“4 Prices” There are 4 prices involved when selling a property. Sounds confusing and a little complicated doesn’t it, but let me explain. There is the Vendors Price, The Agents probable selling price range, the Buyers price and, lastly, the valuers price. Let’s look a little more closely at these “prices”. The Vendor wants the highest possible price for their home. They love their home and, to the vendor it is the “best” in the area. Sometimes the vendor wants to pay off debts, to have enough to retire on or to travel. Sometimes a Vendor has an unrealistic expectation and will be very disappointed. An Agent will present an “asking price” and the expected selling range. If there is not strong interest in the first few weeks at the “asking” price then an adjustment of price to somewhere in that price range is a very sensible option. Jumping from Agent to Agent achieves nothing except added expense. The formula is Asking price – price Reduction – Sold. Buyers want to pay the lowest possible price for a property and it is the Agents job to negotiate the best outcome for the Vendor. A bank valuer will be called upon if finance is required by a purchaser, or is a vendor decides to employ a valuers services for their own information. A valuer must assess the price at which a property would sell on the day! 4 prices – Vendors, Agents, Buyers and Valuers. Agents and Valuers are the most experienced and informed of market trends so “listen to your Agent” and SELL.
