Black day for nature Almost half a century of bush stewardship went up in flames last week when the Black Hill nature reserve north of Kyneton was engulfed by fire. Lightning strikes set off three fires in a semi-circle north of the granite outcrop, well known for its massive rocks and spectacular views. Friends of Black Hill Reserve president Daryl Kellett described the outcome as “tragic”. “Black Hill has been virtually burnt out,” he said. “It’s going to take 20 to 30 years to recover.” The friends group had been looking forward to a successful breeding season for tuans and

sugar gliders, which had taken up residence in about 50 new nesting boxes installed in the reserve. About 3000 new trees planted in the reserve’s north-east corner were lost to the flames, as were plantings along a wildlife corridor from Black Hill to the nearby Campaspe River that had taken five years to establish. Black Hill had finally come into its own after being used by the former Kyneton shire council as a gravel pit until it was taken over by the local car club for hill-climbing. It was the club’s members who started revegetation of the degraded rocky outcrop, which until last week was a popular wildlife walk for nature enthusiasts. “We’ve had to close the reserve,” Mr Kellett

Aircraft, including a sky crane and two large air tankers, made continuous drops over the blazes as 350 firefighters using 70 Country Fire Authority tankers battled them on the ground. CFA incident controller Steve Smith said firefighters had battled difficult conditions well into last Wednesday night. “The damage potentially could have been much worse,” Mr Smith said Fire Ready Victoria meetings will be held on January 13 from 7pm at Woodend fire station and January 14 from 7.30pm at Newham Hall. ‘Firebug’ linked to five blazes By Lexi Cottee Sunbury residents turned up in droves to an information caravan last Wednesday to help police catch a serial arsonist. Detectives with the Hume crime investigation unit set up the caravan in Racecourse Road hoping members of the public would come forward with information on a spate of fires in Sunbury in the past three months. Police are hunting a man who was seen near
the fires riding an unregistered, dark-coloured dirtbike and wearing a dark helmet with a personal camera attached. Detective Acting Sergeant Dennis Cunha said more than 75 people had approached the van with information and Sunbury police had been inundated with calls. “We’ve had a fantastic response and have gathered a lot of intelligence,” he said. The firebug is believed to be responsible for at least five fires in bush near Racecourse Road
between January 1 last year and January 3 this year. The most recent fire, last Saturday afternoon, burnt to within just a few hundred metres of the information caravan near the intersection of Webb Court and Emu Road. Other fires have been lit in Jacksons Creek east of Racecourse Road, Emu Road and Kenway Street, around bushland near Webb Court and in parkland bordering Jacksons Creek and Grapeview Grove. Detective Acting Sergeant Cunha said it was fortunate the fires were contained quickly.
Ballerina bids mum goodbye

It’s a tough world, the ballet world … and that’s just from a mother’s perspective. Sunbury parent Gayle Burley is preparing to farewell her 17-year-old daughter, Olivia, who has been accepted into the New Zealand School of Dance and leaves for Wellington next week. The classical ballerina says she is living “every young girls’ dream”, while her mother wonders how her teenager is going to go cooking and cleaning for herself for the first time. “I can only encourage her as much as I can,” Ms Burley said. “She’s had quite a few knockbacks and there are still no guarantees … but Olivia has always wanted to be a ballerina.” Olivia has been dancing since she was three; at 13 she moved to a specialised dance school in Melbourne. “Once Olivia went to full-time, she grew up very fast,” Ms Burley said. “She became independent and caught the train each day from Sunbury to the city. She would leave home at 8am and get back at 6pm, Monday to Friday.” As bags are packed and last-minute arrangements made, Olivia says she is “very thankful” the New Zealand school accepted her after she was knocked back by the Australian Ballet School. “It’s been a tough run,” she said. “This is just what I wanted to do – non-stop ballet and dance.” Keep up with Olivia’s adventures through her blog at www.alifewelldancedbarrenone. blogspot.com.au. “With a bad wind, these fires could have posed a major threat to Sunbury township,” he said. In January 2013, another suspicious fire came within metres of houses in the same area. On that occasion, the fire, which started near the Calder Freeway between Moore Road and Baggy Green Street, burnt 20 hectares; a shed, a car and fencing were destroyed. Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au.
The efforts of a Good Samaritan backfired when he stopped to help an injured motorist trapped in his car that had rolled on Boggy Gate Road at Clarkefield last Thursday. Sunbury police’s Sergeant John Letchford said the man’s act of kindness went badly wrong when the injured motorist jumped into his rescuer’s Mitsubishi four-wheel-drive, ejected the passenger and drove off at high speed. “This driver then crashed a second time near the corner of Lancefield and Konagaderra roads,” Sergeant Letchford said. He said the driver left the second vehicle and scaled a steep rise to hide from police. A Melbourne man in his 20s was later apprehended. Sunbury and Macedon Ranges police are seeking witnesses who may have seen the motorist in a gun-metal blue Toyota Prado before his first accident along Boggy Gate Road. Witnesses are being asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Meanwhile, Macedon Ranges police are setting up a taskforce to tackle opportunistic burglaries from rural sheds and commercial premises. Burglaries have significantly increased in recent months, January being the worst time with many people away on holidays. Inspector Ryan Irwin urged people to take every possible step to make their properties secure. He also asked locals to be alert and report suspicious behaviour to local police or Crime Stoppers. Business security kits and residential information kits are available on the Victoria Police website at www.police. vic.gov.au. Helen Grimaux

Region’s tour de force A new-look visitors’ guide for the Macedon Ranges and Daylesford areas promises to “break the mould” of Tourism Victoria’s ‘Jigsaw’ campaign brochures of recent years. Regional tourism board chairman Noel Harvey said the new guide was “the best yet”. “It’s stunning,” Mr Harvey said. “It will be the standout guide for the rest of the state.” The tourism region has one of the biggest and most diverse footprints in the state, covering Melton and Sunbury in the south, Creswick and Clunes in its west, Daylesford and the Macedon Ranges, and as far north as Broadford. Regional tourism board chief executive Jill Isherwood is a former chief executive at Melbourne’s Arts Centre and Sydney Opera House. “This is a huge departure from the brochures of the past,” Ms Isherwood said. “It reflects the region as it is now – a region where tourism is a very important player in local economies.” While tourism is estimated to represent
less than four per cent of local economies Australia-wide, its enterprises and industries drive close to seven per cent of this region’s economy, Ms Isherwood said. And while January is often one of the quieter months as Victorians flock to the seaside for their annual dip in the ocean, Ms Isherwood says she’s been surprised how busy the towns of the region have been since the Christmas break. “Daylesford is packed, so are Woodend and Lancefield,” she said. “And the progress at Kyneton, especially of Piper Street, is amazing.” The new 2015 visitors’ guide will be available at tourism information centres across the region from February 5 and online at www. dmrtourism.com.au. No future for Macedon school By Helen Grimaux Macedon Ranges Grammar School will not re-open when the school year starts at the end of the month, with its debts and assets now in the hands of Melbourne liquidators. Administrators Worrells held a creditors’ meeting last week, revealing the school’s debt is more than $1.2 million. Parents, teachers, local businesses and the state government are out of pocket after the school was found to have

operated at a loss for the past three years. Consumer Affairs Victoria is also expected to become involved. While finances sounded the death knell for
the school, former Macedon Ranges mayor Noel Harvey said the school had not complied with fire safety concerns and requirements of both the council and the state government to ensure the physical safety of its students and staff. Mr Harvey said he had been asked to help the school negotiate its continuation during the past three years but he said fire safety as much as financial issues had clinched its demise. “It’s on about 70 aces of mostly bush,”
Mr Harvey said. “It is not even sewered.” He said negotiations were continuing with the Chinese investors who before Christmas had shown interest in saving the school. He said there had been duscussions about a new school to cater for Chinese students opening on the site of the Australian Emergency Management Institute, on Mount Macedon Road. The federal government has already announced the institute will close this year.

Talks to reopen secession plan By Helen Grimaux Sunbury’s secession from Hume is in doubt, with Hume council’s senior management due to discuss its concerns with new Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins in the next fortnight. The council wrote to Premier Dan Andrews directly after the November state election asking for a review of the previous government’s decision to charge Hume $35 million over the next 10 years to underwrite a new Sunbury municipality. Ms Hutchins told Star Weekly she was
looking into the Sunbury secession “very closely” and had scheduled a meeting with Hume council chief executive Domenic Isola before the end of this month. “Labor is on the record about concerns over whether both Hume council and a new Sunbury council would be able to achieve financial stability,” Ms Hutchins said last week. “I’m looking at this matter very closely and speaking with all parties to ensure the best outcome for the local community.” Ms Hutchins said she spoke to Mr Isola before Christmas. Hume council’s acting chief executive,
Margarita Caddick, said last week the coming meeting with the minister would address the order-in-council by the former government to set up a Sunbury council and the implications of this legislative direction for Hume council staff and its communities. “The interests of the community, staff and the organisation are our key priority,” Ms Caddick said. The former government pushed through the order-in-council declaring a new Sunbury municipality on October 30, two weeks before polls opened for the November election. Former local government minister Tim
Bull even appointed an interim administrator, Joanne Anderson, and an interim chief executive officer, Vince Haining, to work alongside the current Hume council on the separation of staff and assets. These two are due to take up their new positions from July 1 this year. As well as distributing assets and liabilities, Mr Bull allocated the full proceeds from the sale of residential blocks at Racecourse Road reserve to the new Sunbury municipality and provided for a share of Melbourne Airport ‘rates in lieu’ revenue to go to Sunbury for the next 10 years.
Lycra is not a look Lance Baddeley relishes for day-to-day wear, but the 81-year-old Sunbury cyclist donned his road gear last week to fly the flag for the forthcoming Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute Cycle Classic at Ballarat. “You’d look a bit silly if you were always in lycra,” he said. “Especially going to the shops.” Cycling is something Lance has always done. He rode to work and night school as a young man and he and his wife cycled “everywhere” in many organised rides and masters events around the country. Next month, the Macedon Ranges Cycling Club member will be elder statesman of the peloton in the 85-kilometre cycle classic, which raises money for cancer research, and he’ll give many juniors a run for their money. Mr Baddeley still cycles 30-40 kilometres three times a week just to keep fit, although he’s
first to admit it’s the coffee at the end of the run that often keeps him on track. He will ride the Ballarat classic in memory of his father, who died from lung cancer even though he never smoked. The Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute Cycle Classic is in its eighth year and has raised more than $1 million for research through its community-based fundraising efforts. The 2015 Cycle Classic is on Sunday, February 15, and has events to cater for all fitness levels and cycling abilities. As well as 100km and 85km rides, which take in the infamous Mount Buninyong climb, there are 50km and 60km courses, two mountain bike challenges and a two-and-a-half-hour relay around Lake Wendouree. There will also be a lap of the lake for walkers. Go to www.ballaratcycleclassic.com.au for details and registration.

A new youth club has been launched in the Macedon Ranges and Sunbury. Run by young people for young people, the Field Trip aims to help young people with employment and as a source for personal and professional development. Lancefield local Paul Kooperman, who founded the club, describes it as “unlike anything else in Australia”. “It is a place to nurture dreams and offers paid employment for older kids and a platform for young people to take charge of the world they live in,” he said. Star Weekly caught up with the club’s youth executive team at Woodend last week – Kyle Hayes from Romsey, Ruby Wilkes from Kyneton and Demi Oliver from Lancefield. “It’s a really great idea,” Ruby said. “Other

Hume council says the state government’s proposed cap on council rates would hamper the delivery of essential services. Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins confirmed the government would impose caps on council rates at the level of the consumer price index (CPI), as promised before the November 29 election. Councils wanting to raise their rates above CPI would be required to appeal to the independent Essential Services Commission. Hume’s acting chief executive, Margarita Caddick, said the council was working with the Municipal Association of Victoria and the Interface Group of Councils to provide advice to Ms Hutchins.

Kyneton misses go on a petrol savings By Helen Grimaux
discount of up to 14c a litre off the advertised fuel price. “All they need to do is pick up a few everyday items in the convenience store and they’ll be able to get the 10 cents a litre discount,” Mr James said.
Petrol prices in Kyneton are “too high”, according to the RACV. Spokesman Michael Case told Star Weekly there were many regional centres, including Kyneton, where pump prices could not be justified, especially at a time when most motorists were enjoying the lowest fuel costs in five years. Prices for both unleaded petrol and diesel are driving locals out of town for better deals as Kyneton’s asking rate for unleaded petrol rests stubbornly close to $1.30 a litre. “Woodend and Macedon prices are cheaper than here,” one motorist told Star Weekly. “Even Castlemaine and Bendigo … we just fill up when we’re out of town and don’t bother with the locals any more.” As petrol price wars in Sydney pushed the cost of some fuel last week to below the $1 mark (99.9 cents a litre), the RACV found the average price in Melbourne at the same time was $1.13 a litre, while $1.25 a litre was being charged in Bendigo. “The spread [of prices] is too great,” Mr Case said. “For the major regional centres to have such greatly different prices doesn’t make sense.” The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission last week was directed by federal Consumer Affairs Minister Bruce Billson to monitor the fuel industry more closely for price fixing and collusion. Woolworths Petrol general manager Michael James has announced a limited-offer petrol

“If they shop at Woolworths supermarkets as well, then they’ll get an even greater saving.” But the supermarket giant conceded it was “a price follower” in petrol retailing. “This means our prices follow our competitors’ movements up or down, depending on the cycle,” a company statement said. Mr Billson has directed the ACCC to undertake “more timely and targeted monitoring of the fuel industry” as part of its role to prevent anti-competitive conduct, such as price fixing or collusion. The ACCC monitors automotive fuel price movements in major cities and at about 180 regional locations around Australia. ACCC chairman Rod Sims said consumers who had evidence of potentially anti-competitive behaviour could contact the ACCC infocentre on 1300 302 502. Star Weekly sought comment from both Kyneton petrol stations. They did not provide it.

Divers search river for guns Police divers searched the Werribee River at Wyndham Vale last Wednesday in an attempt to recover guns used in an armed robbery outside McDonald’s in Sunbury. Three men targeted a cash delivery car in the restaurant carpark just before 6am on December 1, stealing “a substantial amount” of money. Two of the bandits were armed with guns and fled the scene on a dark-coloured motorcycle. The other man left in a late-model sports Holden Commodore Sedan, which was found dumped and burnt out at Little River the next day. No one was injured in the robbery. Police divers searched for the guns in a section of the Werribee River, near Riverbend Historical Park, after an anonymous tip-off. Detective Sergeant David Woolfe, of the Armed Crime Squad, urged the caller to get in touch with Crime Stoppers again. Police are also appealing for more information about a white SUV that was seen near the car fire in Little River on December 2. Police believe the offenders are local to the Werribee area. “The vehicle used in the armed robbery was located at Little River,” Detective Sergeant Woolfe said. ■ Police are urging anyone with ■■ ■information about the armed robbery ■ ■to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Both 86, the couple decided to try Choice Fresh Meals after Mavis had heard good reports from friends. “I belong to seniors and we began talking about meals one day and someone said they were using the company and we decided to give it a try”, Mavis said. “The main reason we did it was that if anything happens to me, Jack would struggle to carry on with preparing food. And the same goes for me if something happened to Jack. It’s a nice break from cooking every night and they have a large choice of 10006735-01-a11Mar©MMP meals…everyone has something they don’t like, so it is nice to have a good range to choose 14 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES WEEKLY from.” “We have tried a few different services, but we are very happy with Choice Fresh Meals,” Mavis said. “It’s conveniently delivered to us by Choice Fresh Meals who also now deliver fresh bread and milk and I look forward to not having to cook for the three nights… it’s a nice break. 1133039-DJ19-14

This white weatherboard with grey Colorbond roof is an ode to modernity on the inside, without sacrificing its essential charm evoked via numerous natural-timber french doors that open to verandahs on three sides. It’s the polished concrete floors throughout, along with a vibrant kitchen and chic bathrooms, that make this one sing a modern tune. Three bedrooms have robes and the extra-big main has en suite decked out in charcoal and white, as is the main bathroom. The lounge room has two sets of french doors to the verandah and there’s a pleasing meal zone next to the kitchen. Glossy red cupboards, deep charcoal benchtops and top-notch European appliances equip the cooking zone. About 915 square metres, the property is in a prime spot close to everything. It has a seven-star energy rating, double-glazed windows, solar panels, 2.7-metre ceilings, gas ducted heating, a carport and a garage.
Not only is this house on a big block of about 1560 square metres, it also has big rooms, with no stinting on the size of the four bedrooms. Three have built-in robes, while the main has a walk-in and an en suite with spa and dual vanity basins. The main bathroom couples with a powder room – so no morning queues. Along with the high ceilings and stepped cornices and skirts, beautiful blue gum floorboards are a highlight of the expansive family-meals area next to the kitchen. Another large living area is carpeted. The kitchen is a corker, with a square-set island bench, lots of drawers, a walk-in pantry, underbench oven and electric cooktop. The laundry is blessed with masses of storage and a workbench. Accessible from living rooms, the large, covered outdoor entertainment area looks out to attractive landscaping. In a quiet court, the property has ducted heating and cooling, a cubby house, an extended double garage and wide side access to the backyard.

Real Estate Today Tidiness is next to Godliness Have you ever noticed that it’s easier to think straight with a clear desk? According to the ancient philosophy of Feng Shui, our spaces both reflect and affect our physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. When our homes become cluttered and disordered, other aspects of our lives tend to feel gridlocked as well. It’s a no-win situation. A cluttered home makes it hard to focus and think clearly, and the longer the mess is left the more it accumulates, so making the task of cleaning increasingly more daunting. Your home and surroundings should work for you. The hard part is getting started, but once you choose a task (pick things up from the floor, put things where they belong or vacuuming) and get the ball rolling, the rest will follow easily. You could even make a list of everything you need to do, starting

at the top and working your way down, ticking off as you go. Actually being able to see what you’ve accomplished in writing (and making sure you dont forget anything) is a great
Chris Read Real Estate: 9740 3040 Price: $340,000 – $360,000 Private sale With a potential rental of about $450 a week, this property comprising two residences represents an investment return of almost seven per cent, so on-the-ball investors should have this one on their inspection list. But it’s also a great proposition for a family wanting to provide a haven for ageing parents. The main house has four bedrooms (each with ceiling fan), the main with walk-in wardrobe and full en suite. Two living areas include a separate carpeted lounge room and a family-meals area with floating floorboards, wood heater, split-system and ceiling fan. The modern kitchen has an island breakfast bar, dishwasher, underbench oven and gas cooktop. And there’s a great covered deck sheltered by timber screens. The second dwelling is a cute weatherboard with verandah; it has two bedrooms, a lounge room, small kitchen and bathroom. It also has a split-system, with energy supply on a separate meter.

TIPS TO INCREASE YOUR LIVING SPACE Sometimes, upsizing your home is not a viable option when you need more room. When this is the case, there are many tips and tricks that can help you maximise the space in your home. One easy task for making a living space look much bigger is installing a big mirror ror It can become a focal point for the room, ror. and the reflection of the room gives the illusion of space which can make mak the room much more comfor comf table, especially when there are no windows. When there is a window, set the mirror opposite it - you will get both more light and a new set of angles to appreciate the outdoors from. Are you looking for a fresh take tak on your seating arrangements? An open-backed open-back sofa can be a very ry versatile addition to a small lounge. It allows for reclining and easy movement, ve ment, and can open up space on either side if you want to use it as a centrepiece.. Add some smaller chairs to increase your seating options. Instead of opting for one larger coffee coff table for your living space, you could use several smaller items. These can function like lik bedside tables and hold only what you need, or can be put together when you desire a larger surface..They can also be tucked tuck away into corners when you want the floor space. With smaller touches like lik this in place, you will soon find your living room a larger and more comfor comf table space to relax in.
Thank you L.J. Whorlow staff for the excellent service provided. I could not be happier. ppier ppier. The service from theTeam has been exceptional. QUICK BATHROOM FIXES It makes mak domestic life lif a breeze when you stay sta on top of maintenance, as well as helping you out when the time comes to sell. Boost the lighting. One of the easiest ways wa to brighten up a bathroom is to take tak that task literally. By changing your light bulbs and fittings you can immediately add some freshness to your ur bathroom. Green bulbs can add some healthy glow while helping the environment, or you can go for extra bright ones if there is not much natural light. Natural light adds a great feel to any room. If your bathroom allows it, some windows can let wonderful sunlight in. When you want to give your bathroom a great once over with cleaning product, a handy tip is to turn on your shower for a short period of time, long enough to heat up the room. The steam released by the shower will open up the pores in surfaces all over the bathroom, making it much easier to get dirt and grime out of the floor and walls. These are vastly different diff tips, but both make mak the world of difference diff . A darkk and gr grimyy bathroom is hardl hardlyy ideal.

When you’re looking for a new home for your family, it’s important to remember that you aren’t just seeking out a great property - you’re in search of a great neighbourhood. There are many factors to consider for your family’s long-term wellbeing, here are a few important ones. If you have ha children, one of the most important aspects of a prospective neighbourhood is the nearbyy schools. Have Ha a look around the suburb, and check up on the educational facilities. Do they have ha good teaching staff and favo fa urable reviews? Are they near public transport, within driving distance or can you walk the kids to school every morning? You can check with friends or colleagues in the area for additional reports.Your weekends ek ekends will often be a time for the family to do activities together together, and not always wa within the comfor ways comf t of your own home. So with that in mind, are there parks in the area? They provide a great opportunity tunity to stretch your legs and get some sun, as well as let the kids let their energy gy out on a playground. pla Green amenities are also a must if you have ha pets such as dogs. You’ll also want to be able to easily do your grocery shopping when you settle down in a new family home - so how close is the nearest shopping centre? Other retail facilities like lik a bank, doctor, doctor and perhaps a local cafe caf will be things you keep an eye out for too. Getting a cup of coffee coff with your friendlyy neighbour at your local cafe caf might not be high on the list to begin with, but it’s these little things that can reall reallyy make make an area shine shine..
We work harder for you

He is like most other kids his age in many ways, but has a considerable history of abuse and trauma suffered at the hands of people that should have been trusted adults in his life. John deals with his history of abuse by using drugs, and is now in custody for a range of offences committed in order to support his drug habit. John is trying to turn his life around and we are supporting him to do that by providing him with positive adult role models, giving him boundaries and structure and listening without judgement when he talks about his childhood. We are passionate about making a difference for John and supporting him to reach for the life he wants.

23 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JANUARY 13, 2015
SPORT Woodend’s in the race, too By Tara Murray In the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup comp, a lot of the focus has been on the usual suspects: Riddell, Sunbury and Sunbury United. Sitting among them on the ladder is Woodend, quietly going about its business. At the Christmas break, Woodend found itself in second place on the ladder, two points behind Riddell. Despite slipping to third with a loss against Romsey on Saturday, coach Adam Johnstone says his side is travelling nicely. “It’s a pretty even competition and it’s been good to get wins in the one-dayers early,” Johnstone said before the weekend’s match. “The results have been going our way and we’ve snuck up to second. We were always going into the season wanting to finish in the top four. You never know what will happen and the top two would be a bonus.” He said having a consistent side was one reason for the season’s good start. “We’ve been pretty happy with the balance of the side with the younger guys starting to chip in a bit more. “If we’ve lost players for matches, it’s only been one player whereas other sides may have lost three or four. “As far as we know, it looks like it will

continue that way for us. It may be one of the reasons we’ve snuck up.” Johnstone is under no illusions of the job ahead for his side. “In the last five games we play the other three teams in the top four currently, and play Sunbury as well. Consistency is the key. If we can get a couple of other players to step up and take some of the pressure off …” The star for Woodend with the ball has clearly been Peter Manser, the competition’s leading wicket-taker. “Peter has been the standout with the ball,” Johnstone said. “He’s also had some good innings with the bat, getting an 80-odd and a few 20-30s.” As for the batting, Johnstone says it’s been a little more even. “Marcus Stewart has been really consistent batting at number three. He’s regularly gone in with the fall of an early wicket. He’s yet to get an 80 or 100 but has three or four 50s. “Brett Gardner has done equally as well in his role.”
Not so happy at home It was a tough day for Clarkefield on Saturday against Gladstone Park in the North West Metropolitan Cricket Association. In the first game back after the Christmas break, the Brumbies were sent in to bat on their home ground. As intended by Gladstone Park, the Brumbies struggled and were bowled out for 85 in the 37th over. The Parkers got the runs with ease, finishing 2-86 with more than 23 overs to spare. The Brumbies sit seventh on the ladder with just two wins and play Pascoe Vale Central this Saturday. For more photos, go to www.sunbury.starweekly.com.au.

Sunbury sitting pretty By Tara Murray Sunbury’s aim for the second half of the Metropolitan Bowls pennant season is to stay in the top two and take a tilt at the top spot. Sunbury, which plays in division 2 section 1, sits in second spot, 10 points behind Flemington/Kensington and 12 points clear of Yarraville/Footscray (2) in third spot. The season resumes on Saturday. “Finishing top two guarantees a home final and even top spot is still a chance,” said the club’s Dave Glennon. “We meet the top team second week back and we’re only a game behind them.” Glennon said the club hoped to have a full squad in most of the matches in the run home to the finals. “Hopefully, most of the people will be available for all the games. “Carla [Odgers] will miss the first week as she’s playing for Australia. We’ll have the odd player pull out for numerous reasons but should have most people available. “We are back at training and Carla is putting us through a lot of drills. It’s something we have been crying out for for the last few years.” The club’s other four sides are also in the mix to make finals. Odgers, who returned to the club this season, won her second club championship before Christmas. Odgers was too good for Elaine Savelli in the final, winning by 12 shots, 25-13. It was a lot closer in the men’s championship, with defending champ Mark Cowan knocked out in the early rounds. Brad Jenner won by two shots from his best mate, Brad Willoughby, 25-23. The two then teamed up the following day to win the club’s men’s doubles championships.

Gisborne’s Tegan Orwin and Sunbury’s Lize-Mari Mitcheley were part of a Festival of Female cricket exhibition match at Bendigo on Thursday. The festival had three age groups take part in various activities. The younger girls played Milo in2cricket and Milo T20 Blast matches; the teenage group participated in a training session with VicSpirit representative Sarah Elliott; and the older girls played an exhibition match representing their country junior clubs. Orwin and Mitcheley were both part of the Melbourne Renagades side.
Golf
Romsey golfers braved the cold and scheduled rain to hit the greens in the first week of competition after Christmas. With cool conditions and a steady south-easterly wind, players tended to hit their drives short. Despite rain holding off, the greens were sodden and players needed to commit to their putts or risk more difficult shots. Despite the weather, a number of players performed well, with Michael McCarton winning on a countback from Les Gaunt. The top five was rounded out by Bruce Robb, Keith Hocking and Dave Muller.
TAC Cup
The Calder Cannons are holding a Hall of Fame function on January 31 to celebrate the club’s 20th season in the TAC Cup. The first inductees into the ‘hall’ will be named, as will the club’s All-Star team of the 20 years. More information is at: meg.mcarthur@ hotmail.com. Carla Odgers took out her second club championship in December. (Shawn Smits)

Tigers take new grade by storm By Tara Murray Lancefield may have taken sides by surprise before the Christmas break in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s C-grade competition, but it’s not expecting that to continue in the new year. In its first season in C-grade, Lancefield is on top of the table with eight wins and one loss. Tigers coach Luke Barker says the club as a whole has so far exceeded preseason expectations. “I’m a little surprised with how we’ve gone as a whole,” Barker said. “We’re on top; the second team is top and the third side is second. The whole club has lost just four games, which is the most surprising thing.” Barker said development of the young players was the biggest factor. “A couple of kids have been OK and have promised a lot the last few years, but they’ve now taken the next step. “Matthew Bowden is leading the bowling in the competition; he’s been very good. “A few of the younger ones have made a few scores. Our depth is pretty good and we have 14-15 players who can easily step up and play in C-grade.
“We’ve only got one bloke who has played every game, so we’re looking to get a settled side in the lead-up to finals.” With matches against clubs in the top five on the run home, Barker says Lancefield will get a true indication of where it’s at. “I think we shocked a lot of clubs early as we didn’t win the D-grade competition, and we’re now sitting on top of the ladder in C-grade. “They may have taken us a bit easy not thinking we would be as strong as we are, but we’re the side to beat now. They’re going to come for us. “We have to play Gisborne, Woodend and Rupertswood, who we are yet to play in two-day matches. That will tell us where we are.” With promotion to B-grade in two to three years the aim, Barker says they have given themselves a chance of achieving the goal earlier than expected. “Promotion in that timeframe is still the goal. To be promoted you need to have the second side not far behind in the grades and with the results so far we have given ourself some chance.” On Saturday, Lancefield’s game against Riddell was called off due to the weather. The teams split the six points.
‘Respect’ for Lions reflects in 2015 fixtures list Less travel to Ballarat and more night matches are highlights of the Sunbury Lions’ 2015 fixtures list, according to president Jack Ogilvie. The Lions will start the Ballarat Football League season away from home with a game against Darley on April 18, before their first home match the following round against Lake Wendouree. Travel has been a concern for the club in recent years, but in 2015 the club will travel to face teams in the Ballarat half of the league on only four occasions. The Lions will play eight games at home, while they play each of the eastern corridor teams Melton, Melton South, Bacchus Marsh and Darley twice. Ogilvie said the club had worked with the league about its concerns with travel – a reason for the club’s decision to reconsider its future in the league. “We spoke about some of the issues we’ve had in the past, and they have been keen for us to stay in the league. “We have been able to negotiate on some things. “We’ve got more games away from Ballarat and a few night matches, which is good for us,” Ogilvie said. “It means people in the area who are involved in the Riddell District Football League can get
to our games as well. “They [the league] have treated us with a lot of respect in dealing with our concerns.” The Lions will host a memorial game on July 18 to honour Albert and Maree Rizk, who were passengers on flight MH17 downed over Ukraine. Albert was a club committee member. “We requested to play Redan [who they played following the plane crash last year]. “They treated us with a lot of respect.” On field, the Lions are set for a big year having added some experience to the young side. Xavier Linton, Lucas Shaw, Ant Zammit and Tim Hill are among the signings. Ogilvie said having Jack Sheahan on a more regular basis was the biggest boost for the club. “Jack is still on Essendon’s VFL list, but we expect him to play a few more matches for us this year. Daniel Toman will again play for us when he’s available.” Ogilvie said he hoped the club would appoint a new A-grade netball coach in the coming weeks. Kim Bailey stood down from the role in November after taking on the job of the AFL Goldfields netball manager. “We’ … should be able to make an announcement soon. Everything else with the netball is sort of on hold until we sign a coach.” Tara Murray

Country Week cricket tests Gisborne’s best juniors It was mixed fortunes for the Gisborne sides in the Central Highlands Junior Country Week finals on Friday. The Gisborne Green teams in the under-13 and under-15 competitions were both expected to play Ballarat Gold in the finals. The under-13 match went ahead, with Gisborne Green falling short of the title. The under-15 final was called off due to the weather, with Gisborne Green taking home the title due to a better percentage in the round robin stage. Speaking during the week, under-13 coach Gavin MacKay said the boys had really
enjoyed the competition. “It’s been a fantastic experience and a lot of fun, and we’ve had a couple of wins,” MacKay said. “Last year the boys played in the second of the Gisborne teams, Gisborne White. “They’ve learnt a little more with their cricket this year. “Last year they were 12-year-olds and found themselves intimated,” MacKay said. “This year they feel like they’re the big boys. “The running between the wickets and the applying of pressure has been a lot better.” MacKay said there hadn’t been a standout in the side with all the boys playing their

roles well. “They have exceeded expectations and I thought at the very start they were a chance to make the final. “The lads have put in a great performance with the bat and the ball. Three of them had to retire after making 40s.” Unfortunately for Gisborne Green, they fell short in the final. After sending Ballarat Gold in, the Greens restricted them to 5-151 off the allocated 40 overs. The wickets were shared between the players, with five bowlers picking up a ‘pole’ each.
In reply, Green could manage ony 7-118, Flynn Lakely top-scoring with 40 not out and having to retire. Gisborne White finished the under-13 competition in fifth place. In the under-15s, Gisborne Green defended the title it won last year. To take the title, Green won its three matches in the round robin phase to finish on a better percentage than Ballarat Gold. Gisborne White finished sixth in the under-16 competition. Tara Murray
