Saleyards try soft approach

(Shawn Smits)

Plenty of shouting could be heard over the mooing of cattle as more than 1500 weaners went under the hammer at Macedon Ranges’ biggest annual cattle sale last Wednesday. Buyers from interstate and western Victoria were among about 200 people at Kyneton saleyards for the event. Macedon Ranges council’s operation services co-ordinator, Matt Garner, said soft footings in pens were used for the first time at this year’s big sale. ‘‘Having soft flooring saves water when we have to wash it down, but we think it will also improve the animals’ wellbeing as they won’t be standing on concrete all the time,” Mr Garner said. “It can actually bring the condition [of the cattle] back.” About 20 per cent of pens used surfaces made from rubber, fine-grade mulch or recycled green waste. The trial is part of a new saleyards strategy funded by the council and state government. Mr Garner said there was plenty of action on the sale floor. “There seems to be fair demand for cattle at the moment,” he said. “We had one steer go for $1000.” For more pictures, visit www. macedonranges.starweekly.com.au. Raw deal for rail users By Matt Crossman Gisborne train travellers are calling for a review of public transport costs after the latest price hike hit the line. Recent changes mean Gisborne commuters now pay up to $13 a day more than people travelling to Melbourne’s CBD from other metropolitan fringe areas, including Bacchus Marsh, Lara and Pakenham. Return peak fare V/Line tickets from Gisborne to Southern Cross station cost $20.80,

compared to just $7.52 from other stations near the city’s edge. Gisborne is 53.1 kilometres from the CBD, compared to Bacchus Marsh (66km), Lara (60.7km) and Pakenham (62.8km). Paul Greenwood, who lives in Gisborne and works in Melbourne, said Macedon Ranges commuters were copping a raw deal. He said he drives to work as it is far more cost-effective, especially for people who don’t have to travel every day. ‘‘A 170 per cent difference just isn’t fair, and it’s certainly not attractive to people who need

to travel to the CBD,’’ Mr Greenwood said. ‘‘If it was priced in line with the fares from similar towns, I think it would go a long way towards easing congestion on the roads.’’ Other Macedon Ranges commuters told Star Weekly they regularly drove to Sunbury or Diggers Rest to catch a Metro train instead of paying the cost of the country service. They said more carparks and more trains also made metropolitan services an attractive option. A Public Transport Victoria spokeswoman said the abolition of zone two fares at the

won’t get this chance again.’’ In September, the former state government accepted recommendations made by a panel it set up to create the new municipality. But Hume council called for an urgent review of the secession project and has sought a meeting with Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins. The meeting was due this month. The council’s acting chief executive, Margarita Caddick, said the meeting would address the order-in-council by the former government and the implications for Hume council staff and its communities. On Friday, an ASU spokesman said while signatures had not been counted, members were regularly requesting more copies of the A4 petition.

HAYDEN MUIR

Riding high on local life A Woodend teenager who raised more than $20,000 for charity has taken out the Macedon Ranges’ young citizen of the year award. Road and mountain bike rider Hayden Muir, 17, was honoured at the council’s Australia Day ceremony at Kyneton town hall after last year completing a 752-kilometre ride to Canberra to raise money and awareness for the Epilepsy Foundation. The Kyneton Secondary College student says the effort was partly inspired by an epileptic friend who had a fit while at school. Several years later, Hayden was impressed by the cycling efforts of former AFL footballer Shane Crawford, who raised $1.3 million for breast cancer research in 2013. ‘‘I thought, I can do something like that.’’ Hayden has some simple advice for anyone wanting to make a difference in the community: ‘‘Just go for it. You never really know what you can do until you have a go.’’

The council’s citizen of the year award went to Bourkies Bakehouse owner Adam Bourke. The Woodend businessman was recognised for his support of local football, netball, Little Athletics and Lions clubs. Achievement awards were presented to Romsey autism campaigner Shantelle Grant, Macedon Ranges Autism Network volunteer Fiona Le Nepveu, and Tamara Wilson, a founding member of mental health support organisation PS My Family Matters. Gisborne Singers musical director Stephen Brockman was named the shire’s arts ambassador. The award for community event of the year went to Newham’s Sculptural Pig Festival. Ten pig sculptures decorated by artists and school pupils were installed around the town as part of the March 2014 event, which marked the 125th anniversary of the Newham Bacon factory. The Australian Services Union is circulating a petition calling for a compulsory referendum on whether Sunbury should separate from Hume. The union, which represents council employees, claims Sunbury’s population would need to triple in order for a new municipality to be financially viable, and it warns residents could face substantial rate increases and cuts to services. An ASU newsletter stated the union had met with the government and raised its concerns. ‘‘There is still time to stop the split,’’ the newsletter said. ‘‘We need to show the government that residents are opposed. We have started a petition to the Parliament and need to get as many signatures as possible.’’ But proponents of a stand-alone Sunbury, which is due to come into existence on July 1 this year, maintain the new council will have a growing rates base that would already be significantly larger than many other Victorian municipalities. Hume council figures show that hundreds of millions of dollars in growth area infrastructure charges and developer contributions could be reaped from future developments in the Sunbury area. Pro-split councillor Jack Ogilvie said if even 80 per cent of the 4000 or so hectares earmarked for precinct structure plans were developed for housing, Sunbury would benefit. ‘‘Now that goes to the state government, but

a good percentage will go back to Sunbury,’’ he said. ‘‘People keep saying we will not have any money, but it just isn’t true.’’ Ogilvie, a serving Hume councillor, said the union’s claims that Sunbury residents faced massive rate rises and that the new council would try to save money by contracting out work for lower wages were not true. ‘‘Rates won’t rise by any more than five percent, the same as Hume,” Cr Ogilvie said. ‘‘This is about the people of Sunbury. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Grammar students praised

For several years, the staff, students and parents of Macedon Grammar School have generously assisted the Sunbury Salvation Army during Christmas Cheer. Each year at the final assembly, students have been encouraged to bring a toy or food item and place them under a Wishing Tree. I was amazed to receive more than 100 gifts on behalf of the Salvation Army last year and was especially impressed with the students’ joy and excitement of giving, despite concerns of the school’s closure. These gifts, alongside a basic food hamper, were given to local families struggling to afford Christmas, bringing relief and joy to many children disadvantaged by circumstances often out of their control. On behalf of the Sunbury Salvation Army, we wish to sincerely thank the students, staff and parents of the Macedon Grammar community for their generosity and commitment, and hope for the best in their new schools. Andrew Webb, Corps leader, Sunbury Salvation Army

Villawood ‘offer’ blasted

I write with growing disbelief about the recent Villawood PR campaign that arrived in my letterbox. The leaflet pretended to be a new offer and implied that everyone, and the council, hadn’t listened to them. This after a five-year policy development process in which everyone, including Villawood, was involved. The community and council worked through these processes, through the ups and downs, drafts and finalised documents, to a decision that must stand. Villawood had consultants and barristers-lawyers to make their case

for each of these. Villawood had its own representative on the community reference group that assisted the council prepare the Woodend town structure plan. All of these planning activities involved broad community consultation and gave Villawood many opportunities to present their proposals, which were considered in the mix with other submissions and pnts of view. Both the settlement strategy and the Woodend town structure plan verified independently that there is enough land in Woodend to meet population growth for at least 18 years, possibly longer. Three areas outside the Woodend township were evaluated independently for future growth and, of the three, the Villawood land contains the most constraints for future development. It is for these reasons that the Villawood proposal was refused by the council last year, when it voted to support its own town planning strategies. I’m hoping the council will support the years of solid work that have gone into all of the previously-mentioned planning documents, in particular the Woodend town structure plan. Briefs Driver alert as schools reopen

Motorists are being urged to remember speed limits are reduced around schools as first term starts on Thursday. VicRoads regional director Mal Kersting said streets would be busier as cars, pedestrians and cyclists travel to and from school. “Children can be unpredictable and, because they are small, they can be hard to see,” he said. Speed limits in school zones will be reduced to 40km/h from tomorrow.

Fireys welcome new trucks, gear

Two Macedon Ranges fire brigades have new vehicles and equipment to boost their fire-fighting capacities. Riddells Creek CFA has three new vehicles, including a $360,000 medium tanker purchased after a long-running community fundraising effort. The brigade also swapped an older fire truck for a light pumper and took possession of a four-wheel-drive ute to replace a vehicle stolen from the station last year. Lancefield CFA members have been testing a new pump trailer built using money donated by the Lancefield and Romsey Community Bank branches.

Police work stops trains

Sunbury line trains were suspended for an hour last Tuesday morning due to a police operation, which forced the closure of the line between Sunshine and Watergardens. Six Metro services were cancelled and a V/Line train from Bendigo was stopped at Sunbury station. The incident affected hundreds of passengers. A passenger on the Bendigo train said carriages were “very full”. Services resumed just after 10am.

Resident turns heat on fire app Residents in bushfire-prone areas are being reminded never to rely on one channel for emergency information following complaints about details provided by the FireReady smartphone app during this month’s Black Hill blaze. Noel Harvey, who was helping a friend near Baynton as a fire raged on January 7, said many people in Kyneton were confused when they received notifications they might be in danger. Mr Harvey, who could see smoke from the main blaze, said other alerts were clearly out of date by the time they came through. Several other regular users of the app complained that the listed location of fires and other incidents was often incorrect. Mr Harvey said he would like to see a feature of the NSW app allowing users to track the spread of fires via an interactive map, to also be part of the equivalent Victorian app. ‘‘In that area between Black Hill and Kyneton, hundreds of houses surrounded by bushland would have been relying on that information to direct their response,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s not a criticism of the authorities; they do an extraordinary job all of the time. But I just hope we can learn from it. ‘‘They’ve spent squillions on it [the app], but when you look at the NSW app, there’s no comparison.’’ Mr Harvey said the app and emergency authority websites sometimes provided different information regarding the placement and spread of fires.

‘‘There were a lot of inconsistencies between the various platforms,’’ he said. ‘‘I appreciate there was lots of lightning on that day and there were several smaller fires, but if you relied only on that app you could get into trouble.’’ In a statement, Emergency Management Victoria (EMV) said the FireReady app was just one of the channels people were encouraged to use, along with ABC radio, Sky News TV, the EMV website and the Victorian Bushfire Information Line. ‘‘In the case of the Kyneton fires, initially there were multiple calls to 000 because of

three fires starting,” the EMV statement said. ‘‘This was reflected on the app and emergency. vic.gov.au. Warnings were then issued for the incident, including specific information on where the fire started and was travelling. ‘‘Communities around Kyneton, Bald Hill, Edgecombe and Woodleigh Heights were targeted in the warnings because of the number of fires that had started and the hot, windy conditions.’’ EMV stressed that there was a difference between incident notifications and official warnings. Cancer screening on the rise By Matt Crossman

Melbourne’s north-west has again been identified as the area with the state’s lowest rate of screening for cervical cancer. PapScreen Victoria manager Hiranthi Perera said up to 90 per cent of cervical cancer cases could be avoided by regular screening. “The rates of two-year participation in women aged 20 to 69 years has increased in recent years, however substantial variation exists between different areas, which is of concern,” Ms Perera said. In 2012, there were 168 new cases of cervical

More women in the Macedon Ranges are being screened for cervical cancer than those in Hume and other parts of the state. New data from the Victorian Cervical Cytology Registry reveals that in 2012-13, 69.5 per cent of women in the Macedon Ranges aged 20-69 had a pap test, compared to 53.5 per cent in Hume. The state average is 60.4 per cent. About one in three Victorian women aren’t screening for cervical cancer as recommended.

cancer in Victoria, with 43 deaths from the disease. “A pap test is the only way to look for abnormal changes to the cells on the cervix, which if left undetected and untreated, could develop into cervical cancer,” Ms Perera said.

“I encourage all women who are due to make an appointment for a quick and simple pap test today.” Macedon Ranges Health community health nurse Louise Beer said national guidelines recommended that all women aged 18 to 70 who have ever been sexually active undergo a pap test every two years. She said it was important that women be vigilant about screening. “It’s so important that they get tested every two years,’’ Ms Beer said. Pap test details: www.papscreen.org.au

A Woodend vet clinic is seeking a foster carer to take on a cute cat and her five adorable kittens. The cat and her newborns were brought in to Tony’s Practice by a Macedon Ranges council ranger earlier this month after being found in a box on a roadside. A spokeswoman for the clinic says because the kittens are so young, they would benefit from being in a home environment. She says the clinic will provide full support, including food and any veterinary needs, over the next seven to eight weeks. “Foster caring is a rewarding and positive experience and you will be directly saving a life,” she said. PixieDance in Sunbury, Melton and Taylors Lakes is all about giving pre-schoolers the opportunity to dance. PixieDance’s director, Miss Cara Cassar, says there are classes for every skill level. “We specialise in pre-schoolers,” she says. “We’re not a large dance school trying to expand.” Miss Cara says the PixieDancey provides a fun introduction to dance classes through the Kinderballet program and parents don’t need to worry about enrolment or costume fees as there are none. “Our accredited Kinderballet classes give toddlers and pre-schoolers an opportunity to experience classical ballet through fun and creative-themed classes,” she says. “At the heart of Kinderballet is a new ballet program especially developed for pre-schoolers. “The children can perform at our annual presentation day towards the end of term four where family and friends watch them demonstrate what they have learnt throughout the year in costumes provided by PixieDance.” The dance school caters to children as young as two years old in its Mummy & Me classes and up to five years old in the Kinderballet classes. The classes range in length from 30 to 45 minutes. “Our classes include a warm-up and stretching, followed by a loose introduction to basic classical ballet steps, creative movement, musical interpretation and appreciation and stimulating the child’s imagination,” Miss Cara says. “It’s all set within a particular theme which varies each term.” Miss Cara, who trained at Riddell’s Creek Dancing School then Sunbury School of Dancing, opened Pixie Dance in 2011. On about 1005 square metres, surrounded by attractive gardens, this period-style house has old-world touches such as a corbelled arch in the entry hall, 2.7-metre ceilings, rosettes, period-style lightfittings and brass light switches which are juxtaposed with floorboards, streamlined window furnishings and a neutral colour palette. Of the four good-sized bedrooms, the main has a walk-in robe and en suite; there’s also a study which could be a fifth bedroom. The living zones include an open lounge room and a large family-meals zone with access to a covered outdoor area. Lace-adorned verandahs provide other outdoor spots to enjoy the peaceful gardens. The kitchen has timber cupboards and stainless-steel appliances, including dishwasher. The property also has a garden shed, water tank, and an integrated double garage with back roller door and internal access.

Arguably one of the finest equestrian properties in the state, Stakers Farm of about 20.23 hectares has a wonderful six-star energy rated homestead, and gardens displaying a fantastic collection of especially chosen trees, stone walls and year-round colour. Downstairs has beautiful floorboards throughout, high ceilings, deep cornices and skirts, and a bespoke Tasmanian blackwood staircase. One downstairs bedroom is next to a bathroom and upstairs bedrooms flank a retreat area and bathroom. Lovely living zones are a lounge room with bay window, and a dining area next to a country-style kitchen with stainless-steel appliances. Horse facilities/infrastructure are a dressage arena, four stables, tack and feed rooms, tie-up and wash bay, paddocks/day yards with shelters, a huge gravel carpark, three dams, quality bore and water tanks with about 113,500 litres.

Real Estate Today Agents Responsibilities From time to time, as a service to our community, we will use our column to inform readers of the responsibilities of Estate Agents. Today we deal with the estate agent’s responsibilities to a buyer. As a buyer, you will not pay an agent for services provided in selling the property. Buyers may deal with several agents or agent’s representatives, depending on who is handling the sale of the property they are interested in. You can leave details with one or more agents indicating the type of property you are seeking and an approximate price range. The agent may contact you when suitable properties become available. As a buyer, you can expect an agent to: • take your details and provide advice about relevant properties for sale • answer your questions about listed properties • arrange inspections

• provide you with a copy of the vendor’s statement and contract of sale when available and communicate genuine offers from you to the seller

In the heart of town which is noted for its foodie culture (think Annie Smithers’ du Fermier, The Cosmo, The Plough@Trentham and Red Beard Bakery, among others), this appealing property is all about relaxed living opposite a lake and parklands. With places to tuck into brekky, lunch or dinner right on the doorstep, and a choice of two large, covered decks on which to take a break and soak up the pretty gardens, this place is looking good on many levels. It has three bedrooms with robes, the main also with an en suite and french doors to a verandah. The bathroom packs a design punch with its red floor tiles and charcoal-toned wall tiles. The large living hub is a pleasing space, with a wood heater set in a slate surround, and french doors to verandah. The kitchen is compact but practical. Less than an hour’s drive from Bolte Bridge and 20 minutes from Daylesford, the property has a split-system, vegie garden and a large double garage with a workshop area.

• organise the signing of the contract of sale. The relationship a seller has with an agent is different to the relationship the agent has with a buyer. Agents must act responsibly and ethically when dealing with both buyers and sellers. But buyers should be aware that the main responsibility of the agent selling the home is to the seller. More information can be found on Consumer Affairs Victoria website and click on Contact Us. At Dunlop Real Estate our service is always ethical and efficient. If you have any interest in or question about a real estate feel free to contact me, John Dunlop on 9744 2555 or call into our friendly offices at Sunbury and Gisborne for a talk.

Price: $420,000

Just around the corner from the main street, this 1920s abode is petite in size but a giant in the charm stakes. It showcases all the era’s best bits: high ceilings with beautifully ornate plasterwork or straps, picture rails, brass light switches, original french and interior doors, decorative cornices, wide baltic floorboards and sash windows. And roller blinds, new carpet in bedrooms and trendy paintwork turn up the volume on modern.

It’s a toss-up whether the big main bedroom or atmospheric lounge room (with wood heater set in brick surround) has the loveliest ceiling, but there’s no argument about their innate character. The second bedroom has a simple strapped ceiling and both bedrooms share a bathroom with a marble-topped, period-style vanity unit. There’s also an open dining room which injects a sense of occasion into even a simple breakfast, perhaps cooked on the

Belling stainless-steel 900mm cooker which is set within the original fireplace in the kitchen. Lots of white cupboards with timber-trimmed laminate benches equip this cooks’ domain. At the back, there’s a small vestibule with a laundry to the side. Past this, a sunroom with floorboards has cedar-framed french doors opening to a timber deck, the spot to soak up some rays and take in the big backyard rimmed

with mature trees. There’s an old shed out here, but extra storage can be utilised in a lock-up room under the fretwork-trimmed double carport. Nicely secluded kerbside behind high hedges, the house on about 1500 square metres also has a split-system and gas (town) ducted heating to cut Romsey’s seasons down to size. Carole Levy

SPORT Sunbury Jets shake up youth tournament in Hawaii Two Sunbury Jets basketball teams have not only matched competitors from America, New Zealand and Canada … they’ve shown them how the game is played. The club sent a boys’ team and a girls’ team to compete in the world youth tournament in Kona, Hawaii, in late December, and both teams made it through to the final. The boys’ team took home the title, while the girls lost to the 21st-ranked school side in America. Boys’ coach Shannon Peterson said it was the first time the club had sent players to America.

“I’ve been over with different clubs before and I’ve sent my children over there. “I’ve been coaching in Sunbury and thought it was something that would be good for the club,” Peterson said. “The children loved the experience and got a lot out of it.” The 11 boys and eight girls competed before touring schools on the American mainland. “The boys lost one game for the tournament. To win overall was a pretty big surprise as they hadn’t played together,” Peterson said.

“It was a combination of under-16s, under-18s and under-20s. The girls (coached by Darren Watkins) put up a good fight in the final but couldn’t get the win,” he said. “It was a good experience for them.” Not only did the teams have success, one player, Josh Grabham, was offered a scholarship in America following the tournament. “He injured himself in the last game, so he didn’t get the chance to play when we travelled around the schools,” Peterson said. “I haven’t touched base with his parents to see if he will take up the scholarship.”

Peterson said the biggest difference between America and Australia was how the junior system worked. “They have a school system but don’t have age groups. The best at the school end up in the team,” he said. “We competed well and had a few single-digit losses in both the girls and boys. “In one game, the boys played the seventhranked team in Oklahoma and won the game by one point in the last 90 seconds.” Tara Murray

Kel McInnes scored 38 for Sunbury. (Wayne Hawkins)

Sunbury, but only just By Tara Murray Late wickets took the McIntyre Cup match between Sunbury and Bacchus Marsh down to the wire on Saturday . Sunbury found it anything but easy chasing 187 in the Gisborne and District clash, according to club secretary Marty Kelders. “We had a pretty good start with Jack Landt making 45 and Kel McInnes 38,” he said. “Kel has come a long way this season and with some of the more experienced top order failing it was good for the younger boys to step up. “Wickets fell regularly, but Dylan Landt, who played in the under-16 state championships during the week, came in and made a sound contribution.” In the end, Sunbury needed one run with

one wicket in hand. “Our last batsmen then survived a couple of balls before tickling one around the corner to get four, all run,” Kelders said. The win keeps Sunbury in the top four, four points clear of fifth-placed Gisborne – a position that seemed unlikely earlier in the season. “The attitude of the guys is that we’re trying to win every game because of the pressure coming from underneath,” Kelders said. “We believe that if we can play well we can match it with any side in the top four. Playing finals is definitely on our minds and the pressure is on. We can only focus on what we can do.” Sunbury plays ladder leader Riddell this week. “There’s a lot at stake and we have a clear

focus of what we need to do,” Kelders said. “Things are getting exciting and very positive now after the poor start.” Riddell will enter the match full of confidence, too, following its outright victory over Wallan. Wallan resumed at 4-11 in its second innings, still 58 behind the Bombers, and was quickly dismissed for 61 to lose by an innings and eight. Woodend and Sunbury United swapped second and third spots on the ladder after Woodend made 259 and United replied with 217. Gisborne easily got the points over Romsey on the back of a century from Jarryd Vernon, Vernon finished 118 not out as Gisborne made 4-202 in reply to Romsey’s 110. Romsey was 3-85 in its second innings.

A whirlwind couple of months for Kyneton’s Chloe Stewart has continued with the 18-year-old being named in a senior Australian bowls team for the first time. Despite still being eligible to represent Australia in an age-restricted development side, Stewart was selected to play in the trans-Tasman competition in both singles and pairs. A shocked Stewart said the selection was unexpected. “I saw my name and started jumping up and down and then called mum,” she said. “I’m super-excited to jump in and give it a go,” Stewart shocked much older competitors by winning the women’s singles at the world under-25 bowls championships on the Gold Coast in November. “I think that they want to give the next generation some experience at the next level,” she said. “It will be a really good experience for me ahead of the world championships and Commonwealth Games.” In the trans-Tasman competition, Stewart will compete against Commonwealth Games gold medallist Jo Edwards before teaming with Anne Johns in the pairs. Stewart and Johns have previously played together. “I love competing against the older players,” Stewart said. “It’s a great experience. If I can sneak a couple of wins off her [Edwards] that would be fantastic. “This has always been the dream and it has happened a lot quicker than I imagined.” National coach Steve Glasson is upbeat about Stewart’s selection and optimistic about her ability to deliver on the senior international stage. “Chloe has had a stand-out 12 months at senior and under-25 levels and has proven beyond a doubt that she’s ready to make the leap in to the main Australian team,” Glasson said. “Her selection is testament not only to her ability to perform but also to her level-headedness and a maturity beyond her years.” Stewart’s club side, Kyneton, had the weekend off with no play being held in the Central Highlands competition. Sunbury’s Carla Odgers, who represented Australia at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, missed selection for the trans-Tasman competition. Tara Murray

27 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JANUARY 27, 2015

SPORT MACEDONRANGES.STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

Sunbury’s swap for top By Tara Murray Sunbury came out on top in the battle of the top two in Bowls Victoria division 2, section 1 on Saturday. Sunbury went into the match in second place, but a dominant display against Flemington/ Kensington saw the sides switch ladder positions. Sunbury’s Dave Glennon said it was a good win for the club. “Hopefully, we will remain on top spot for the rest of the season,” he said. “We now lead them 167-163 points on the ladder and are 10 points clear of Altona Sports in third.” Sunbury was again led by Mark and Elise Cowan in the 16 (84)-2 (69) win. Elise won her rink 26-11 and Mark claimed his 22-11, while Carla Odgers won hers 21-15. Eric Taylor’s rink was the only rink to lose, going down 22-15. “Elise and Mark are having really good seasons,” Glennon said. “Elise has 10 wins and a draw in 14 games, while Mark has won nine games. “Carla also has had more wins then losses this season.” Glennon said the win against Flemington/ Kensington was important. “They don’t lose too many games, but they’ve lost two to us this year,” he said. “It’s possible we could come across them in finals and it will be in the back of our minds that we’ve won both games.” Sunbury plays fourth-placed Yarraville/ Footscray (2) this week.. “We are 26 points clear of them and if we can beat them we can put daylight between them and us,” Glennon. “Hopefully our good run continues.”

Hail, kings of Country Week By Tara Murray Consistency was the key to the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s division 2 Bendigo Country Week title win last week. After being relegated to division 2 this year, the GDCA was determined it was going to be for only a brief spell. On the way to the title, the GDCA team lost only one match for the week and that was by just two points. Coach Peter Cullen said he was thrilled by the effort put in by all the players. “It was a great week and the whole team played well,” Cullen said. “The incentive was to win the premiership and go back up again. We tried to select a team that could do that.

“It’s very hard to get a group of players who want to and can play for the whole week, but these guys did exactly that. We had 10 players who came for the whole week.” Cullen praised the efforts of the team’s leaders, Warren Else and Chris Burkett. “Warren did a great job as captain and was well supported by Chris [as vice-captain]. “Chris was man of the match in the grand final and had a really good week. It’s hard to get fast bowlers to commit, and he carried the brunt of the load so credit to him that he got the reward,” Cullen added. While Burkett was the stand-out, topping both the bowling and batting figures for the GDCA, other players made sure he wasn’t alone. “Every player contributed for at least one

or two games. Chris and Darcy Nolan bowled well every match, while for someone like Taylor Stevenson, who is in his first year in the team, it’s special to be part of a premiership. “Hopefully, it’ll hold him in good stead and he’ll be part of the team for many years.” Cullen said team supporters had come every day to watch, notably Ron Smith, Gary Wilson and Allan Williams. With this year’s competition now over, thoughts are already turning to next year. “We want to win the division 1 title, which we haven’t won in a number of years,” Cullen said. “We weren’t that far off last year and the competition is extremely close. “Our group has a lot of potential and I’ll give all the players a chance to put their hands up for next year to come back and try.”

Hurt star steps into coaching Reigning Ryan medallist Lauren Close knew she wanted to stay involved with Riddell Football Netball Club, even though a knee injury would mean limited court time. So she has put up her hand to coach. After injuring her knee playing in the Australian Netball League, Close had to watch as the Bombers lost last season’s Riddell Netball League A-grade grand final to Melton Centrals. The husband of previous coach Eliza Allen is playing cricket in London this year and so Allen will be in England for some of the time. So when the opportunity arose to take on the A-grade coaching job, Close jumped at the opportunity. “Once I did my knee I knew I wanted to stay involved and put my hand up to coach,” she said. The Bombers appear to have a settled side, with not too many changes to the one that made the grand final. “Jess Dominko has gone to Rupertswood, while a few players are getting married during the season and will miss games,” Close said. “But it’s pretty much the same team. We’re talking to a few people but nothing has been signed yet.” Close said she hoped to get on the court late in the season. “Fingers crossed; I have a surgeon’s appointment today,” she said on Tuesday. “I’m back running, so maybe I can get games in towards the end of the season.” The Bomber netballers start training in the first week of February.

B-grade finals race log-jammed The finals fight in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s B-grade competition is on, with six points separating five teams. Rupertswood’s dominance continued on Saturday as it accounted for East Sunbury and extended its ladder lead to 15 points. The next five teams – Macedon, St Anthonys, East Sunbury, Diggers Rest Bulla and Ashfield – are separated by six points, equivalent to a first innings win. Macedon was the weekend’s big winner, jumping to second place with a thumping of Bacchus Marsh. Macedon was in control of the game after day one, and it didn’t take long to get the points. The side made 3-108 in reply to the Marsh’s 92. Bacchus Marsh finished its second innings on 4-149. Daniel Trotta top-scored for Macedon with 54.

Equal on points with Macedon is St Anthonys, which is out of form after losing both its games since resuming after Christmas. This time it was Diggers Rest Bulla who inflicted the Saints’ pain. Having set a total 213 on day one, the Combine bowled St Anthonys out for 124. The win keeps Diggers Rest Bulla in the finals mix; only percentage is keeping it out of the top four. Despite losing to Ruperstwood, East Sunbury remains in ‘the four’. Having made 180 on day one, Rupertswood restricted East Sunbury to 165, with Jay King taking 6-35 and Josh Powell 4-49. Dylan Featon top-scored for East Sunbury with 27. Ashfield, perched in sixth place, remains in the finals mix with a good win over Sunbury United.

After bowling United out for 63, Ashfield made 3-116 declared as it looked for an outright win. Brad Fleming top-scored for Ashfield with 52 not out. In United’s second innings, Zach Ross ensured Ashfield would be denied the outright, making an unbeaten 103. Ashfield now sits three points behind fourthplaced East Sunbury. Lancefield continued its winning streak in the C-grade competition with an easy win over Woodend. After bowling Woodend out for 74, Lancefield declared at 5-129. Woodend was 2-106 at stumps in its second dig. Gisborne has a grip on second place, with Rupertswood and Riddell tied on points for third spot. Tara Murray

Tustle for top spots in CDCA Kyneton will need early wickets against Barkers Creek in the Castlemaine and District Cricket Association’s A-reserve competition. Batting first, Kyneton was bowled out in just over 50 overs for 109. Barkers Creek started well and will resume at 1-51. Trentham will battle after being bowled out for 117 by Taradale in the topof-the-table clash. Taradale had reached 3-62 at stumps. Before this round of matches, Trentham was sitting 24 points clear on top of the ladder.
