Star reaches out at home

(Shawn Smits)

It’s a long way from the paddocks of Clarkefield to sunny Summer Bay, but former local Andrew Morley (pictured) is always happy to make the trip home. Morley, who has played Spencer Harrington on Channel 7 soapie Home and Away for almost three years, remains a committed Wildwood CFA volunteer. Involved in efforts to raise $50,000 for a new fire tanker, he recently posted a video urging his 170,000 Instagram followers to support the cause. Morley, who returns home every two to three weeks, is also teaming up with Sunbury’s SynergyHair Beauty Massage to help raise money for online youth support organisation ReachOut. Morley says ReachOut plays an important role in young lives. “The main reason I’ve been such a big supporter of ReachOut is that whatever issue kids are going through, they can get on there and find out more. And because it’s online, it’s totally anonymous.” Morley says being part of Wildwood CFA helps him stay grounded. A 10-year volunteer, he was at Kilmore East during 2009’s Black Saturday fires and says donning the yellow overalls is one way to “give back”. Morley says $50,000 will help the brigade get CFA support for a new tanker. Find Wildwood CFA on Facebook. Matt Crossman

Author plans arts school By Matt Crossman Author and alternative education pioneer John Marsden has plans to open a secondary school, including a specialised arts stream, at the former site of Macedon Grammar. Mr Marsden told Star Weekly he had purchased the 32-hectare Bailey Road site from Macedon Grammar School’s founder, Dr Alan Rose. Macedon Grammar was shut down by the state government in December last year after being handed a ‘show cause’ notice by the Victorian Registration and Qualifications

Authority (VRQA). Administrators Worrells held a creditors’ meeting last month, revealing the school’s debt was more than $1.2 million. Mr Marsden, the founder and principal of Candlebark School near Romsey, said he hoped to open a new school at the site in time for 2016. He said he was unable to disclose the sale price. ‘‘We came to terms a few days ago,’’ Mr Marsden said last Thursday. ‘‘The plan is to open a full secondary school with a regular stream and a specialised stream for students wanting to do dance, arts, music, writing and so on.’’

Mr Marsden said the new school, which he hopes will one day have about 200 students, would be a Victorian first. ‘‘Outside of the Victorian College of the Arts, I am not aware of any other school that offers this kind of specialisation,’’ he said. ‘‘The arts never used to be looked at as a serious career but nowadays creativity is such a valuable asset, it has to be taken more seriously.’’ Mr Marsden said the new school would follow the Candlebark philosophy, giving students a broad range of experiences, often outside the classroom. He said the Macedon Grammar site – which

He said the next step was to seek approval from the VRQA. ‘‘We would love to say we will open halfway through this year, but realistically it will probably be the start of next year.’’

Snake makes home in bedroom By Matt Crossman A Sunbury father is warning people to watch out for unwanted visitors after a snake was found curled up in his eight-year-old daughter’s bedroom. Brad, who didn’t want his last name published, said that although the brown snake was safely removed, the incident could easily have been tragic. ‘‘She walked into her room to go to bed after having a shower and there was a brown snake, probably about 60cm long, half-curled on the floor,” Brad said.

‘‘She thought, that’s not a toy and went and told her mum. Her mum’s not that keen on snakes so because I was at work she got a friend to come over. ‘‘He found it in the built-in wardrobe, among a pile of shoes.’’ Brad said he had lived with his family in Ashfield estate for more than 12 years but had never seen a snake on the property before. He said he feared that had his daughter not seen the snake, she could have gone to bed and been bitten in her sleep. ‘‘It’s all very scary,’’ he said. ‘‘We live opposite vacant land near a creek so we’ve always been

aware of the possibility of snakes coming into the backyard. But to find one in the house is just mind-blowing. ‘‘We’re very lucky our daughter saw it when she did.’’ Snake catcher Jake Harberger urged people to be wary of snakes despite this summer’s mild conditions.

‘‘It’s been a bit cold for snakes, but on the warmer days and nights they’re definitely about,’’ Mr Harberger said. ‘‘People should keep their yards free of rubbish, wood or hard metals and should check the seals on things like sliding doors because it’s pretty easy for a snake to sneak through.’’ Mr Harberger said anyone who found a snake should phone a professional. ‘‘Stay away, but keep an eye on it,” he said. ‘‘We get calls from people who freak out and run away, but when we get there we’ve got no idea where it’s gone.’’ Snakes are protected under the Wildlife Act.

Vintage cars join picnic at the Rock Thousands of classic, vintage and veteran cars will roll into the grounds of Hanging Rock this Sunday for the area’s biggest annual automotive show. The Macedon Ranges and District Motor Club’s Picnic at Hanging Rock show is the largest single-day classic motoring event in Victoria, attracting more than 2000 entrants and many more spectators to the picturesque venue. Organisers are hoping the event will go off without a hitch after last year’s show had to be postponed due to bushfires.

“Never look for bargains in parachutes, brain surgeons or life insurance.”

Committee member John van Gronigen, who has entered his 1955 Riley Pathfinder, says the 28th annual show will take enthusiasts on a fascinating and sometimes surprising trip down memory lane. ‘‘We do get quite a few rare cars,’’ he says. ‘‘You might see the odd Lotus or Maserati, and we get some cars that have been heavily modified. There’s also a lot of motorcycles.’’ All cars and bikes entered must be at least 25 years old. Mr van Gronigen’s Riley is one of just four or five of its type in Victoria.

He bought it in 1996 after finding it in an old farm shed, where it had sat untouched for almost 35 years. ‘‘Like all English cars of that era, it has an understated luxury,’’ he says. ‘‘It’s a beautiful car to drive. They sure don’t have the get up and go of the American muscle cars; they were more a car for touring.’’ Gates open at 8am. General admission costs $20 per vehicle, $5 for pedestrians. A $100,000 reward has been posted as detectives draw a common thread between a robbery in Sunshine West and another in Sunbury last year. Armed crime squad detectives also released CCTV footage of the incidents, which happened last October and December. In the first incident, an armed man forced his way into a factory in North View Drive, Sunshine West, about 5am on October 8. He confronted a female employee and shot at her, injuring her arm. When police arrived, he held the woman while edging towards a motorbike, threatening police before releasing the woman and fleeing. It’s believed the same offender then held up a café on Elgar Road in Derrimut with the same long-arm firearm, stealing cash, about 5.25am. Investigators have now linked these incidents with an armed robbery at Sunbury McDonald’s and a failed holdup beforehand at another McDonald’s just off the Calder Freeway. It is believed the Sunbury robbery on December 1 involved three offenders, who held up a cash delivery driver just after 6am. Two of the three offenders carried firearms. The armed crime squad’s Detective Inspector Stephen Clark said the director of public prosecutions may offer indemnity to bona fide informants.

Child vaccination rates ‘too low’ Too many parents in the Macedon Ranges are putting their children and others at risk by not having them properly immunised, a local nurse has claimed. Macedon Ranges council immunisation nurse Wendy Ashton said vaccination rates were too low, potentially exposing children to a range of potentially dangerous diseases. Latest Health Department figures reveal that immunisation among five-year-olds

in the Macedon Ranges is at 91.24 per cent. Neighbouring municipalities have higher rates. In Hume, 92.87 per cent of five-year-olds are immunised; in Mitchell it’s 93.94 per cent and in Melton, 94.34 per cent. According to the Australian Medical Association, 93 per cent of children need to be vaccinated to stop the spread of disease. Ms Ashton said immunisation was the best defence against illness and death from vaccine-preventable diseases, such as measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus and polio.

LOOKING INCOME FOR TAX COURSE

MORE FLEXIBILITY IN YOUR

CAREER

She urged parents to learn about immunisation. ‘‘Children who are properly immunised, it gives them a great deal of safety against some of these diseases that are creeping back into society,’’ she said. ‘‘My advice to people is to educate yourself as much as possible. Talk to your GP or maternal child and health nurse, so that you can make a properly informed decision. ‘‘Hopefully, that choice will be provaccination,” she said. Ms Ashton said she supported the state

government’s promise to reintroduce a free whooping cough vaccine program after a surge in the number of cases last year. She said she had picked up the disease herself in late 2013. ‘‘I wouldn’t wish it on an adult, let alone a child,’’ Ms Ashton said. The council provides free immunisations as set out by the national immunisation program schedule. Sessions will be held in Gisborne, Kyneton and Woodend this Thursday. Top cop slams speeding drivers By Matt Crossman Macedon Ranges’ top traffic cop has been left shaking his head in disbelief after more than 30 speeding drivers were nabbed as part of a statewide roads blitz. Operation Amity also uncovered five unregistered vehicles, one unlicensed driver, one disqualified driver and two seatbelt offences on local roads. Two motorists had their cars impounded as part of the operation, held on the Australia

Day long weekend. Macedon Ranges highway patrol Sergeant Geoff Neil said the number of drivers caught breaking speed limits on the area’s roads (33) was way too high. ‘‘Unfortunately, it’s fairly consistent with some people’s attitudes,’’ Sergeant Neil said. ‘‘We nicked one driver doing 172km/h on the Calder Freeway near Malmsbury, which is just ridiculous. ‘‘Most of the speeding offences were upwards of 25km/h [over the speed limit].’’ If there was anything for police to be happy

about, the operation did not detect anyone drink or drug driving. But Sergeant Neil said officers had already been called to more minor collisions than this time last year.

He urged motorists to keep their eyes and minds on the roads. ‘‘We are never going to get anywhere with road safety if the community doesn’t come with us,’’ he said. In neighbouring Hume, including Sunbury, police caught two motorists speeding. They also detected four unregistered vehicles, three unlicensed drivers and seven people disobeying traffic signs or signals. More than 135,000 motorists were breathtested across the state as part of the operation.

Neil’s kitchen rules A Sunbury community kitchen that has been operating for 18 months hasn’t just given people in need a free meal – it’s given them a purpose. That’s the belief of co-founder Neil Williams, who was presented with the Kiwanis Club of Sunbury’s citizen of the year award on Australia Day. Fellow kitchen volunteer Rick Daicos was named young citizen of the year. Mr Williams, who started the kitchen with wife Marianne in late 2013, says many of those who benefit from the weekly service have previously been stuck at home with not much social life. ‘‘We have people telling us that it has completely changed their lives,’’ he says. The Rotary Club project has become a social hub, which Mr Williams says has gone much further than he ever expected. ‘‘We’ve got close to 50 volunteers feeding between 100 and 150 people a week,” he says.

“But if it wasn’t for the support of the Rotary Club, businesses and the community, it just wouldn’t work.’’ Mr Williams says the kitchen continues to offer hearty meals and a friendly, caring environment to sit and chat. ‘‘It’s like I always say to our volunteers, we don’t judge anyone who comes in because we don’t know their situation.’’ The community kitchen will resume on this week after a summer hiatus. Carlsruhe mother Kerrie Grant is urging people to take a break from unhealthy habits and help young people battling addictions get the break they need. Ms Grant (pictured) is a keen supporter of FebFast, an annual event that encourages people to deny their cravings and raise money for early intervention programs for children tackling drug, alcohol and mental health problems. Several new ‘fasts’ have been introduced this

year. Participants can choose to quit alcohol, junk food, social media or smoking. Ms Grant gave up sugar last year. ‘‘I must confess I have a little bit of an addiction to chocolate,’’ she says. “I allowed myself the fructose in fruit so, for me, it was a matter of substituting a chocolate bar with an apple.’’ Details: www.febfast.org.au. Homicide detectives have uncovered footage showing a twin-cab utility following the Peugeot of a man whose body was later found in the boot of the burnt-out car in Diggers Rest last year. Footscray man Kenan Balikel’s charred body was found in the boot of his unregistered car on Bulla-Diggers Rest Road at 12.20am on October 31. The CCTV footage shows the ute, which had a hard-top canopy, travelling behind Mr Balikel’s car on Mickleham Road, Tullamarine. Detective Senior Sergeant Stuart Bailey said police believed Mr Balikel was murdered in the vicinity of Freight Road some time between 3pm and 4pm on October 30. They believe his body was later taken to Diggers Rest in the boot of his car.

Beating the bottleneck

‘Jacks’ want names cleared

By Matt Crossman Works to improve a busy Gisborne access road are expected to greatly improve traffic flows and reduce risks to drivers and pedestrians. Residents say Rodney Street, which links Melbourne Road and Howey Street, has become increasingly busy in recent years because of residential expansion. The narrow, partially-sealed road has no gutters, drainage, footpaths or kerbing but is used by hundreds of cars every day. A $332,000 project to widen the road and install underground drainage is under way. John DeLai, who has lived in the street since 1965, said the narrow strip of bitumen was no longer up to scratch, with 60-70 new units built in Rodney Street alone. ‘‘With so many people coming into town, the road just doesn’t cut it,’’ he said. ‘‘A lot of people are using it to access the main part of town and it’s becoming more and more dangerous. ‘‘There’s only room for one car, so people have got to move over all the time to let other cars through.’’ Mr DeLai said the street was even more dangerous on rubbish collection days, with bins clogging it on both sides. Macedon Ranges south ward councillor Russell Mowatt said the council was covering 75 per cent of the cost of works, with residents contributing 25 per cent under a special-charge scheme. ‘‘This road is an important part of the Gisborne road network and services many local residents,’’ Cr Mowatt said. Rodney Street is closed to through traffic while works take place. A diversion has been put in place for the town bus service. The street is expected to reopen in April.

Two Hume councillors at the centre of claims about alleged intimidating behaviour have called for a report from the investigation to be released. Councillors Jack Ogilvie and Steve ‘‘Jack’’ Medcraft fronted an independent inquiry late last year after the council received several formal complaints following a fiery meeting in Broadmeadows last September about Sunbury’s separation from Hume. Both councillors claim the subsequent investigation cleared them of all complaints. ‘‘It was an independent panel that cleared Jack and I of all claims,” Cr Ogilvie said. ‘‘I want it released so it clears our names.’’ Cr Medcraft said the two councillors had been ‘‘crucified’’. ‘‘The claims were made in public; the report should be made public also,’’ he said. Sunbury resident and pro-split supporter Trevor Dance said the report should be released with any sensitive sections ‘‘blacked out’’. But council chief executive Domenic Isola said the report would not be made public. ‘‘The investigation findings can’t be disclosed due to privacy and confidentiality considerations, and the fact that they are subject to legal professional privilege.’’ Mr Isola confirmed a meeting last week between the council and Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins had covered a range of issues about the Sunbury project. KNOW YOUR GRASSFIRE RISK THIS SUMMER

If you live near open grassland, parks, paddocks or reserves, you could be impacted by grassfire.

IT’S UP TO YOU TO KNOW WHAT TO DO IF A FIRE STARTS. DO YOU LIVE ONE OR TWO STREETS AWAY FROM GRASSLAND? Stay inside your home – grassfires are unlikely to spread past the first row of houses Keep the roads clear so emergency services can respond

DO YOU LIVE ON A FENCELINE NEXT TO GRASSLAND? If a fire starts, quickly move one or two streets away from the fenceline or park boundary Act early, even if you haven’t received a warning Keep the roads clear so emergency services can respond

Remember, it’s up to you to monitor weather conditions and warnings. Always keep an eye on the conditions outside - you may be aware of a fire before emergency services. If you see smoke or flames, call Triple Zero (000).

ANKLE IMPINGEMENT 10022033-01 1171721-LB06-15

A great raw deal

Written By: Michelle Tanner

Ankle Impingement is a common condition in many sports people especially footballers and basketballers. It involves pain across the front of the ankle joint often with no apparent recent injury, such as rolling the ankle. The main complaints are: 1. Pain across front of ankle joint 2. Pain when foot is fully pointed such as kicking 3. Pain on pushing off from a standing start or a sudden change of speed or direction. This pain can get progressively worse if not addressed. The cause of ankle impingement is pinching. As the ankles is bent upwards the tissue is pinched. As the ankle points down the tissue is stretched. Normally there is enough room at the front of the ankle, but if the capsule is swollen and the bones become worn there but if the capsule is swollen and the bones become worn, causing spurring, then problems arise. The treatment relates to management to control the swelling and minimise the aggravation. Steps to follow are: 1. Diagnosis by your Physiotherapist or Sports Physician. 2. Manage Aggravations (eg: rest, avoid painful kicking and pushing off that foot). 3. RICE (rest, ice, compression & elevation) after sport, games and training. 4. Strap/Tape for support (your physiotherapist will guide you with this). 5. Physiotherapy treatments such as ankle mobilisation, appropriate stretching and rehabilitation to address other issues such as a ligament or muscle weakness and balance problems. An X-ray is often taken which can show bony spurs that look like sharp edges. If physiotherapy and the above management is not successful you may need surgery to clear out any debris and smooth the bone at the front of the ankle.

With every new year comes new resolutions. For some, they include aiming for healthier lifestyles and better eating. Eating more raw food is something to consider. It’s simply about consuming fresh fruit and vegetables, nuts and seeds that haven’t been cooked, processed or had preservatives added. Eating raw food can also be about ditching dairy and “bad” oils. Obesity and over-eating are often attributed to processed foods that lack fibre. Raw foods, such as fruit and vegetables, can be full of fibre and vitamins that satisfy for longer.

Redness and flushing of the face, neck and chest is very common. There are several causes, but sun damage and rosacea are the most common. Generally it can be very successfully managed whatever the cause.

“Eating raw” doesn’t mean going without desserts or treats. Raw food sweet snacks and dessert concoctions can taste just as sweet as those made from processed sugar, butter, chocolate, milk and oil. So consider trying raw and organic options such as agave (plant-based sweetener), almond or cashew butter, coconut oil, almond or coconut milk, and cacao. Using healthy alternative ingredients instead of processed varieties may give your body the nutrients it is seeking while also delighting your tastebuds. Changing to eating more raw food can be as simple as replacing a sugary cereal or white

toast at breakfast with a fruit smoothie or green shake. Or take a salad to work for lunch instead of visiting the local café, and eat more vegetables for dinner. Eating raw means there is less need to go to supermarkets as most greengrocers and healthfood shops have what’s required for many recipes. If eating healthier this year sounds like a good idea, put down that chocolate bar and head to a raw food website such as www.rawfoodforlife.org for great replacement suggestions. Rebecca Miller

Many people like routine, particularly when it comes to seeing the same doctor who is familiar with their healthcare needs. And the patients of Family Medical Centre (FMC) have this assurance with two popular doctors, Greg Saville and Anurita Kar, returning to the clinic. “We’re welcoming back Dr Saville, who worked at FMC in 2013 while completing his GP Registrar rotation,” GP liaison and marketing manager Danielle Smith says. “His clinical interests include dermatology, geriatrics and cardiovascular medicine and he’ll be available on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. “Dr Kar has been missed by many patients while she was away travelling, but she’s back to treat them from Monday to Thursday.” The clinic is part of the GP Registrar program, which allows qualified doctors who have chosen to specialise in general practice the opportunity to develop their skills and get a feel for medicine away from a hospital. “Being part of this program is very rewarding as we get to meet so many up-and-coming GPs,” Danielle says.

“Like Dr Saville and Dr Kar, some decide to stay permanently.” FMC is also welcoming four female GPs – Mais Ali, Rajvir Singh, Claire Kembrey and Holly Harman – who are part of the GP Registrar Program with six-12 month placements and some looking to stay permanently. The senior doctors at FMC are also well loved, including GP supervisors Dr Jim Lupton, who won a ‘supervisor of the year’ award in 2011, and Dr Joe Horvat. FMC is now into its 30th year providing healthcare to the Sunbury community including a range of allied health services. Locals can keep up to date with what’s happening there by collecting the clinic’s monthly patient newsletter from reception or by visiting their website or Facebook page. And patients can find many helpful medical resources on the FMC website for physical and mental health conditions. Family Medical Centre, at 94 O’Shanassy Street, Sunbury, opens 7.30am-8pm, Mondays-Fridays, and 9am-3.30pm, Saturdays. Inquiries: 9744 6222 or www.familymedicalcentre.com.au

A fine example of its era, this architect-designed house on about 1714 square metres has all the architectural tricks to make it a classic: angled ceilings in timber and plaster, exposed bricks and beams and cedar-framed doors and windows. Three bedrooms include the main at the front, with robe and en suite; the other two (with robes) are at the back near the main bathroom with enclosed toilet. The entry hall opens up to a large lounge-dining area, with access to a study. Next to a big family-meals area, the kitchen has ample cupboards, stainless-steel wall oven and gas cooktop. An undercover entertainment area paved in bricks looks out to a great garden with mature trees, and there’s a large shed/workshop. Close to schools, shops, station and Calder Freeway access, the property is also within 45 minutes of the CBD and 30 of the airport.

Minutes from vibrant Trentham, this lovely house on about 1.09 hectares exudes serenity and luxury. Polished floorboards throughout against a white decor deliver streamlined modernity, and recent updates add a bit of glam. Upstairs, three extra-big bedrooms (with robes) include the main which has a chic en suite; the fully tiled main bathroom is equally snazzy, with a freestanding bath and walk-in shower. The main living room has a wood heater while the family-meals space has french doors to a deep, slate-tiled verandah. The kitchen is equipped with an Ilve 900mm cooker. A 15.5x7-metre detached entertainment room/studio has a wood heater and kitchenette; this abuts a machinery/storage room and a single carport. The property has a stunning array of exotic and fruit trees in a parkland setting, a six-car carport, wood shed, three water tanks and a fenced paddock. Whether as a weekender or permanent residence, this winner is just an hour from the Bolte Bridge.

On about 1500 square metres in a quiet cul-de-sac, this beautifully presented house is all about loads of space, inside and out. Entry provides a strong first impression, with a columned island wall directly ahead, behind which is a carpeted lounge-dining room. Before that, on the right, is the main bedroom with bay window, walk-in robe and en suite. On the left, there’s a study which could also serve as a fourth bedroom. Two other bedrooms (with robes) flank the main bathroom, separate toilet and laundry. Next to a large, tiled family-meals area, the kitchen has a corner pantry, stainless-steel appliances and a dishwasher. A large gabled pergola with Laserlite on top and tiles below serves as an attractive entertainment space that looks out to landscaped gardens. The property has ducted heating, evaporative cooling, two water tanks with about 3000-litre capacity, a 6x9-metre Colorbond workshop and a lock-up double garage.

There’s nothing particularly fancyschmancy about this brick veneer, but what it does have in spades is a sense of quiet elegance, a smart floorplan for family life, and gardens fully established and very pretty. Outdoors is as well presented as the interior, which has a soft-green and terracotta motif on floors and windows. A splash of a deep dusky-rose on feature walls adds a bit of bold romance, which works well with elegant drapes and fabric pelmets. The rooms beyond the front door through

to the living hub could be termed the ‘adult zone’. These include the main bedroom, with walk-in robe and en suite; an open study across the way; and a full-width (carpeted) lounge-dining room with a gas log fire. This latter room can be closed off from the activity centre at the back via a leadlight door, making it a choice spot for entertaining. The living hub of kitchen, meals and sitting area is arguably the star of this place. Lovely spotted gum floorboards stretch out in kitchen and meals zones, while carpet makes the sitting area a

comfortable one. But the highlight is the bank of windows extending unbroken along two walls, which not only admits loads of natural light but also serves to bring garden snapshots into focus. The kitchen has soft-green laminate atop timber-laminate cupboards, a servery/ breakfast bench, two-door corner pantry, dishwasher, wall oven and electric cooktop. One bedroom (plus laundry with closet) is off the hub, while the other two are down a carpeted hallway, as are the separate toilet and main bathroom with a spa; each bedroom has a robe and timber blinds.

A partially-covered gabled pergola above terracotta-toned tiles makes a commodious spot for outdoor relaxation, and views of gardens full of colour enhance any occasion. Out back, there’s a lattice-work pergola covered with a glorious pink climbing rose; a stretch of lawn behind a sleeper retaining wall; and a pencil pine parade along the back fence. Within a walk of schools and Spavin Lake, the property also has gas ducted heating, evaporative cooling and a double garage. Carole Levy

What is it that we celebrate on Australia day? Is Australia Day simply another long weekend, a chance to go camping, fishing or water skiing? Is Australia Day a chance to turn on the barby and get together with “mates”. For some, Australia Day is the day of “becoming Australian” – of taking the oath of allegiance and accepting citizenship or, or do any of us think of the historical background and the enormous changes which have taken place. We can see the first landing as the birth of a Nation, or we could see it as the invasion of a country by or, a foreign power accompanied by bloodshed and genocide. Australia is and always has been a multi-cultural country. The indigenous people maintained this country for thousands of years. The arrival of the Tall ships brought English, Irish, Scott’s and a smattering from Europe. The Gold rush brought a vast array of nationalities including the Chinese (men only) and including Great Grandfather. Grandfather I am proudly Australian; we have a wonderful country free from civil war and, though our men and woman of the defence forces fight in other countries, we have, so far, far largely escaped warfare on our shores. We must stand strong and maintain our freedom, our way of life.

31 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 3, 2015

SPORT Willow Cup victory gives Dragons Twenty20 vision Gisborne has done what no other Gisborne and District Cricket Association team has done before . . . won the division one final of the Central Highlands Region Willow T20 Cup. The cup had the four winners of the T20 competitions in the Central Highlands area vying for the status of ‘best team in the region’. Gisborne beat Riddell in the final of the GDCA ompetition then knocked over Golden Point in the semi-finals of the Willow Cup . They faced Campbells Creek in the final on Australia Day. Dragons captain-coach Daniel Trevillian said his team didn’t even expect to make the final, let alone win it. “It was a pretty exciting

day,” he said. “At the start of the competition we said we’d give it a crack and our priority was to win the GDCA competition. “Once we won the semi-final it put us in a position to do something that hadn’t been done before.” Trevillian said his side was surprised by the decision to be sent in. “We made 6-145 after the openers got us off to a good start,” he said. “Simon Harman made 64 and Eamon McKenna 27. “I came in at number three and made 19. From there we had good partnerships and some lofty hitting.

“It’s the best we batted throughout the T20 matches.” Trevillian was confident the total would be enough, despite never having seen their opponents play. “It was hard to know whether it was enough and we didn’t know what batting weapons they had. But we had defended modest totals in our earlier games so we were pretty confident. “We managed to bowl really well and our fielding was good. “They needed nine or 10 runs per over for most of the innings and finished their 20 overs on 7-127.”

‘Catch us’, says United By Tara Murray Round 12 shaped as a defining one in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup season, and day one didn’t disappoint. Matches between Sunbury United and Gisborne, and Sunbury and Riddell, are evenly poised while Woodend is in the box seat to seal up a top two position. For Sunbury United, a win against Gisborne would almost ensure a finals spot. For the Dragons, a win keeps the pressure on the fourth-placed Sunbury. Choosing to bat, United had all its top order get starts. While none could pass 50, only numbers 10 and 11 failed to make double figures in the advance to an imposing 261. Ryan Billinghurst top-scored with 42, while Dragons allrounder Jarryd Vernon took 7-97. United won a low-scoring one-day game between the two sides earlier in the season. Ladder leaders Riddell will need quick wickets against Sunbury. Sunbury, which entered the round in fourth place, four points clear of Gisborne, got off to the perfect start with the ball. The Bombers were left to rue the decision to bat, as their batsmen struggled against the experienced Sunbury attack. Opener Cameron Moran (with 40), Daniel Fisk and captain Heath Wadden showed the only resistance as they struggled to 144. Jason McGann, with 6-24 off 22 overs (13 maidens), took his season’s wicket tally to 37. Jacob Brewer chipped in with 3-23. Sunbury finished the day at 4-67 as it, too, lost early wickets. Brewer added to his solid contribution with the ball, making 39 opening the batting for Sunbury. Paul Webber and night watchman Jason Elliott will both resume at 0 not out. While its finals rivals were battling each other, Woodend took to the field against the winless Wallan. Woodend played like a team headed for a top two spot against a bottom-leaning Wallan whose batsmen overcame a poor start to make 6-319. After losing both openers for ducks and being 2-2, the Woodend middle order put its foot down. Warren Else top-scored with 88 and Marcus Stewart made 72. Wallan will start its innings on day two. In the round’s remaining match, Bacchus Marsh will resume at 0-33 chasing Romsey’s 159. Romsey captain Chris Burkett again showed why he’s the star batsman of the competition in making 42.

Ryan Billinghurst, in great form, top-scored for Sunbury United. (Shawn Smits) 32 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 3, 2015

Ryan Baker and Jarryd Vernon took two wickets each. The win means the Dragons will represent the Central Highlands in the 16-team Victorian statewide T20 championship in November. The Dragons’ focus now returns to the McIntyre Cup, where they’re sitting fifth on the ladder with two and a half matches remaining. “It’s a bit of a log jam,” Trevillian said. “One, two and three are almost settled, so we need to beat Sunbury United [in the current match].” Tara Murray

Key role for Riddell league Riddell District Football Netball League will host its Nepean league counterpart in the AFL Victoria country championships on May 23. The match is a coup for the RDFNL, with the Nepean league ranked 14th in the state, 14 places higher than Riddell. The RDFNL was due to play Tallangatta FNL on the weekend of May 23 but has pulled out of the competition to play in a localised representative carnival in the Murray-Riverina area. Nepean FNL was meant to play the Mallee FNL. In another bonus for the RDFNL, it will host the country championship game for a second successive year – this time at Macedon’s Tony Clarke oval. Last year the RDFNL footballers went down by one point to Alberton Football Netball League. RDFNL operations manager Toby Boyle says he’s excited about taking on the challenge of playing a league ranked much higher than Riddell District . “Taking on a league ranked in the top 15 will give us a good indication of where our league sits among other AFL Victoria country leagues, and we’re looking forward to the challenge,” Boyle said. The RDFNL’s current ranking of 28 is protected regardless of the result against the Nepean FNL, meaning a loss won’t drop the RDFNL down the rankings. As well as fielding senior sides, the two leagues are hoping to have an under-18 footy game, along with open and under-17 netball fixtures. Tara Murray

Skipper a star for Lancefield Lancefield has made its Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s C-grade premiership intentions clearer than ever with one of the most dominant batting performances of the season. Captain-coach Luke Barker ensured his side overcame a slow start against Bacchus Marsh – the top three batsmen went cheaply – to help it post the massive score of 7-373. Barker was the star, making 216 not out, including 22 fours and eight sixes. Entering the round, Lancefield was 11 points clear on top of the ladder.

Little girl in a big hurry By Tara Murray Abbey Moore may be one of the smallest competitors at the Sunbury Little Athletics Centre, but she hasn’t let that slow her down. Last weekend, she broke the centre’s record for the under-6 60-metre hurdles. The record had stood for 11 years. Abbey’s mum, Tammy, said her daughter was thrilled with the result. “It’s her first year competing,” Tammy said. “I normally go over to the tent with her to get her times, but I didn’t this time thinking it wasn’t that fast. They told her it was better than a personal best, and I didn’t believe her. It was then put over the loud speaker that she had broken the record … everyone was coming over to congratulate her.” Abbey’s favourite events are the hurdles and the sprints. “She’s a fast runner and also broke her personal best in the 100 metres sprints on the same day,” Tammy said. “They are more her events than things like long jump and the throwing. She’s been aiming to get personal bests each week and it’s good for her to have something to aim for.”

John Laing won Romsey Golf Club’s January medal after taking out the stroke and putting event on Saturday. Battling strong winds, golfers found themselves in unfamiliar territory on the fairways, making club selection difficult. Laing finished the day at 95/28/67 to win by three shots from Michael McCarton, 97/26/70, followed by Les Gaunt and Mal Mottram.

Tennis

Macedon Tennis Club is having a ‘make a racquet’ day on February 15. From 4-7pm, the event will include free coaching and play, a barbecue, kid’s entertainment and prizes. President Alastair Fleming says it will be a great day out for the whole family. “The club tennis day promises to be a lot of fun, and you don’t need to know how to play tennis to come along and join in. It might just be the start of a new interest and new friendships,” Fleming said. Details: macedontennisclub.com.au or phone 54261511

Clarkefield came out on top in the battle of the bottom sides in the North West Metropolitian Cricket Association’s George Luscombe Shield. After setting Strathmore Heights the massive total of 347 for victory, the Brumbies bowlers did the job, dismissing Heights out for 144. Matthew Shaughnessy took five wickets. Forced to follow on, Heights made 6-213 to avoid the outright loss. Shaughnessy added another three wickets to his tally.

SPORT MACEDONRANGES.STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

Cannons’ guns saluted By Tara Murray The Calder Cannons’ selection of its ‘best team’ from the first 20 years of its history reads like a Who’s Who of AFL players, past and current. The 22 stars chosen include a Brownlow medallist, two Norm Smith medallists, an NAB Rising Star winner, nine premiership players and numerous best and fairest winners. All have played at least 50 games in the AFL. Thirteen of the 22 players converged on Etihad Stadium on Saturday night as the Cannons celebrated their 20th anniversary in the competition and inducted 10 people into their Hall of Fame. The first draftee, Geelong premiership hero Darren Milburn, was the oldest in the

team of the past 20 years, with Cannons 2010 premiership stars Dion Prestia and Tom Liberatore the most recent players. Fremantle duo Ryan Crowley and Zac Dawson travelled from Perth for the occasion; Richard Douglas, Brent Reilly, Daniel Talia and assistant coach Ryan O’Keefe came from Adelaide, while Jude Bolton and Prestia also travelled from interstate. Many of the players spoke about the Cannons’ culture and how it made them feel like belonging to a family. Geelong star James Kelly said he “cherished his time” with the Cannons, while O’Keefe said he was “forever grateful”. Talia, who played only 10 games for the Cannons in two years, spoke about wanting to get on the park every week but being told to “think about the bigger picture”.

Richmond ruckman Ivan Maric said his time at the Cannons was vital in his choosing football over basketball, and tagger Crowley revealed he was the complete opposite to his junior years, when he hated taggers. Rodan and Chapman spoke about how the Cannons not only changed their lives but also made an impact on their families. Seven players were among the inaugural Hall of Fame inductees and they were joined by three men who have made a difference off the field: Ross Monaghan, who was tasked with setting up the Cannons; three-time premiership coach Robert Hyde, and Phil Dunk, the trainer for 20 years. Bowlers do the job for rampant Burras In a round where the top six teams all played each other, East Sunbury and Diggers Rest Bulla were the winners in Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s B-grade. With the teams from second to sixth on the ladder separated by just six points, the results of the current round are vital in the fight for finals spots. Second-placed Macedon struggled with the bat against fourth-placed Diggers Rest Bulla. Diggers Rest Bulla sent Macedon in and refused to allow it to build partnerships on the way to a meagre 129. Gareth De Rosayro top-scored with 38. Burras captain-coach Rhys Berry said his team’s bowling performance was muchneeded. “It was definitely a bowler-type of day in the overcast conditions,” Berry said.

“We got a couple of early wickets and that continued throughout the innings. If we want to play finals we have to win this game.” Lindon Dowsett took 4-27, while Berry snagged 4-40 from 27 miserly overs. Berry said his side needed to win at least two of the last three games. “St Anthonys made 199 against Rupertswood, which you’d expect them to chase down and that will make things interesting,” he said. “If we win this week we’ll really need only one more win to make finals. The first aim is finals, but we want to win the rest of our matches and finish top two.” East Sunbury is on track to beat Ashfield, in the process making Ashfield’s finals dreams just that. East Sunbury skittled Ashfield’s batting

line-up after sending them in and Ashfield found themselves back in the sheds for a miserable 78. Chris Watson took four wickets for East Sunbury. In reply, East Sunbury was 3-55 at stumps. Rupertswood will look to continue St Anthony’s fall down the ladder on day two of their clash. Rupertswood is 15 points clear on top of the ladder and a finals berth is already in hand barring a disaster. Youngster Nathan Shoesmith and Logan Gray took four wickets each in St Anthony’s total of 199. In the other match of the round, Sunbury United made 226 against Bacchus Marsh, opener Joshua Smith top-scoring with 112. Tara Murray

Essendon Football Club will converge on Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges for 48 hours next week to run its AFL community camp. The camps, which every AFL club is involved in, are aimed at bringing the teams into the community. The Bombers will visit schools, hospitals and footballs clubs across the area next Monday and Tuesday. Riddell District Football Netball League operations manager Toby Boyle said the camp would help build on the relationship between the club and the area that already existed. He said it would be the longest time Essendon had spent in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges during his years at the RDFL. “For the past four yearswe’ve had a partnership with Essendon which has seen the league’s junior academies involved with the club, and they’ve helped promote our interleague side,” Boyle said. “It can’t hurt to have the club in our area with the ever-expanding number of boys and girls playing football.” The league will host Essendon at a function on Monday night, with all the Bomber players expected to be in attendance. Two of the RDFL clubs will also have training sessions with some of the Essendon players. “On the Monday afternoon, the Bombers’ players will be split between Rupertswood and Sunbury Kangaroos, along with East Sunbury and Sunbury Lions, and they’ll help take training for the under-16s and under-18s for an hour,” Boyle said. “They’ll have a super-clinic in Gisborne on the Tuesday and have invited a lot of schools from around the area. “They will also visit schools across Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges.” AFL Goldfields will also host the club on the Tuesday.
