By golly, there’s bogans galore
Throw on your flannelette shirt, tease out that big hair and squeeze into some black skinny jeans – it’s almost time to help raise money for children at Sunbury and Macedon Ranges Specialist School. Teachers Maylene Sands, Hannah Geary, Rex Hickman (at back) and eight-year-old Allannah already have their wardrobes sorted for the school’s ‘‘bogan bingo’’ night and comedy show. It’s on at Pitruzellos Estate Olive Grove and Winery, August 14, to raise money to upgrade grounds and buy an all-abilities swing for the school’s primary campus in Sunbury. The school’s last fundraiser helped buy an in-ground trampoline, providing a valuable opportunty to exercise for children with special needs. This year’s event will include silent raffles and auctions. Tickets cost $45 and are in limited supply. Details: 9744 4879 or goo.gl/fYhmig Matt Crossman
Cuts ‘a risk to patients’ By Matt Crossman Budget cuts at Kyneton District Health could trigger an exodus of specialist staff, an experienced anaesthetist has warned. Dr John Gray, who has worked at the hospital for more than 20 years, said moves to slash specialist anaesthetists’ total pay by up to 50 per cent had some doctors considering their next move. ‘‘There are some people who have made up their minds to go,’’ he said. ‘‘There are some who are willing to stay, but it’s very dependent on the hospital’s response.’’ Revised contracts offered to specialist anaesthetists follow management’s recent
decision to reduce surgical lists and cut the rostered hours of theatre staff, as it tries to bring the hospital’s budget back into line. Some surgeons have also been asked to accept cuts of between three and 10 per cent so that all are paid at the same rate. Dr Gray said the changes would force specialist anaesthetists to decide not to make the trip from Melbourne, meaning the hospital would have to employ GP anaesthetists to replace them. He said this could lead to more problems for doctors and patients. ‘‘Let’s say giving anaesthesia is like flying an aeroplane; 95 per cent of the time it all goes really smoothly, five per cent of the time there
are problems and every now and then there’s a catastrophe. ‘‘The hospital may well say we only do healthy patients and small procedures, but things go wrong even with fit patients. Fit, healthy patients can have allergic reactions. You need that experience.’’ Dr Gray said the absence of specialist anaesthetists could also lead to the departure of paediatric and eye, nose and throat surgeons unwilling to have GP anaesthetists do their lists. ‘‘We understand the hospital has to make cuts and we are more than happy to sit down and come to a reasonable compromise. ‘But we feel it is unfair for the hospital to target
one sector to such an extent,’’ he said. A hospital spokeswoman said all anaesthetists would become casual employees rather than contracted consultants. ‘‘The change in payment set-up means the impact on an individual’s take-home pay will be minimal, while the organisation’s bottom line will be improved. ‘‘GP anaesthetists are already a part of our workforce,’’ she said. The spokeswoman said significant improvements had been made to the hospital’s budget across its departments. ‘‘These changes to employment conditions are an important part of the plan to break even in the year ahead.’’

MP Finn attacks ‘split’ auditor A western suburbs MP has been accused of trying to undermine a review into Sunbury’s planned secession from Hume after calling for transition auditor John Watson to be sacked. Speaking in State Parliament on Tuesday, Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Bernie Finn called on Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins to get rid of Mr Watson. Mr Finn claimed Mr Watson had ‘‘made it very clear to a number of people that he does not support the establishment of a Sunbury city council’’.
Mr Watson and Frank Vincent, a former judge of the Supreme Court, were appointed by the state government in March with a brief to review Sunbury’s planned split from Hume. The former Liberal government had gazetted papers for the creation of a new Sunbury council to start on July 1 this year. ‘‘As a resident of Sunbury, [Mr Watson] is entitled to his opinion,’’ Mr Finn said. ‘‘But as a transition auditor, he is not entitled to go into that position with a pre-established view, particularly in the case of a situation where I understand we are looking at a review of the decision-making process.
‘‘The information is not ours, we are simply making the information readily available to the community. They will make comment to us and, in due course, we will make a recommendation to the minister.’’ Mr Watson and Mr Vincent will begin meeting with members of the public and taking submissions from this week. A public information forum will be held at Sunbury Memorial Hall on July 24. The auditors are due to report back by the end of August.
‘‘As long as Mr Watson is involved, the whole process is under a cloud.’’ Ms Hutchins said she had full confidence in Mr Watson. “The previous Liberal government and Bernie Finn carelessly pushed through a plan for the split without resolving issues with services and staff,’’ she said. ‘‘Rather than representing what his constituents want, [Mr Finn is] more interested in derailing Labor’s efforts to get it right.’’ Mr Watson and Mr Vincent said any decision about the separation process was not theirs to make. ‘‘We are approaching this in a professional manner,’’ Mr Watson said.

The creation of a special-use zone designed to ensure appropriate development in Mount Macedon is a step closer after Macedon Ranges council endorsed a report recommending a change from the existing rural conservation zone. Current zoning allows permits to be issued for uses including animal boarding, landscape gardening supplies, carparks, agriculture and schools. But the report said the new zone would exclude uses ‘‘more suited to a larger commercial centre’’ and ensure developments were consistent with the village’s tourist and residential market. Cr John Letchford said development of the plan would include extensive consultation over several years. ‘‘The community is enthusiastic about this. It’s something that’s been long overdue.’’ Cr Letchford, who successfully moved an amendment specifying that the council continue to liaise with the community about the preparation of design guidelines, said residents would help decide ‘‘what goes in and what fits’’. Cr Jennifer Anderson said she was concerned some residents were still confused about what the changes meant and that the plan might contain some loopholes. Guidelines and a final zone schedule will be presented to a future council meeting before a planning scheme amendment is sought. The council will also ask the planning minister to authorise the preparation of an amendment to create a special-use zone near Kyneton racecourse.

Sunbury businesses frustrated by the delayed rollout of the National Broadband Network have complained that slow and unreliable internet is holding them back. The town was largely ignored by NBN Co’s latest rollout map, released last December, despite the federal government’s pre-election promise that all premises would have access before the end of 2016. Services are already available in parts of some new estates. Hannah Tedder, of Sunbury web design business H Create, said the ADSL+ connection available in her area was patchy at best. ‘‘Some days it’s just horrible,’’ Ms Tedder said. ‘‘Especially when uploading files for a client … sometimes I literally have to walk away, go do something else and then come back.’’ Ms Tedder said the complete rollout of the NBN would lead to major productivity gains. ‘‘It would open up a lot of channels, things that just aren’t an option at the moment,’’ she said. ‘‘A lot of businesses are using things like Skype to talk to clients, but I have to avoid it because the connection is so unreliable.’’ GTI Computer Innovations technician Mitchell Hayden said the need for high-speed internet in heavily populated areas such as Sunbury was much greater than in outlying towns such as Heathcote. ‘‘I have no doubt it’s restricting many businesses. ADSL just can’t cope.’’ McEwen MP Rob Mitchell said it was a disgrace that Sunbury and Gisborne, among other centres, had not been mentioned in the latest NBN rollout plan. He said he had been advised Sunbury would receive the NBN within 18 months, only to be told two weeks later that the area was not in the existing national plan. A Communications Department spokesman said Sunbury was included in the most recent rollout plan, with work to start before July next year. But NBN Co’s rollout map still shows only parts of new estates will be included.

Police are appealing for information about the death of a Bendigo woman who was struck by a car near Kyneton railway station about 6pm on June 5. Leading Senior Constable Brett Magrath said police were looking for two witnesses who helped the woman, 44, get off the train. He said neither witness was under investigation but might be able to help the coroner shed light on the woman’s death. Police were interested in why the woman disembarked at Kyneton. “She was supposed to get off at Bendigo,” he said Phone 5421 2900 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Hume council is helping residents take the fight against unsightly tagging to the next level, with free graffiti removal kits available. There are two types of kits, one for removing graffiti from painted or Perspex surfaces and another for brick and stone facades. Mayor Adem Atmaca says the council took a zero tolerance approach to illegal tagging. ‘‘It is ugly and can spoil the appearance of a neighbourhood,’’ Cr Atmaca says. ‘‘We want to help residents to scrub away the tags and other spray-painted scrawl that make many people feel frustrated and, at times, unsafe.’’ The packs include cleaning liquids, cloths, paint brushes, safety goggles and gloves. Council data shows graffiti removal costs Hume ratepayers about $130,000 a year. Details www.hume.vic.gov.au. Matt Crossman

Tick for council, with exceptions By Matt Crossman Community satisfaction with Macedon Ranges council’s performance has improved in several key categories, a new report reveals. But the area’s biggest residents group maintains the council is coming off a low base and still has plenty of work to do. The results of an annual independent survey of 400 residents show satisfaction with the council’s overall performance remained unchanged at 59, above Victoria’s large rural shire average of 56.
Residents’ opinion of the council’s overall direction went up six points to 54, bringing it into line with the average of other councils in its group. The council’s community consultation rating improved from 47 in 2014 to 52 this year, while advocacy was rated 53 (up three). But scores for waste management, elderly support services and local law enforcement went down by four, three and two points respectively. The non-compulsory survey was conducted by Local Government Victoria by phone in February.
Macedon Ranges chief executive Peter Johnston was pleased with improvements in some categories such as roadside slashing and weed control (up four points to 46) and maintenance of unsealed roads (up two to 47). ‘‘Council direction and consultation are two highly significant areas where we have made noticeable improvements,’’ Mr Johnston said. ‘‘We are also performing well in a lot of areas compared to other large rural shires.’’ Macedon Ranges Residents Association secretary Christine Pruneau said it was
‘‘telling’’ that the council’s scores for decision making, consultation and roads were relatively low. Referring to plans for a major equine centre in the municipality’s south-east, Ms Pruneau said: ‘‘With these kinds of scores, perhaps council should go back to basics like roads, rates and rubbish instead of mucking around with more sexy things.’’ The council was recently presented with a gold award at the Australasian Reporting Awards for reporting excellence. The award followed silver awards for its previous two reports and bronze awards in other years.
Girls led charge for change Soccer has been given a handy kick-along at Kyneton, with significant upgrades to Barkly Square finally complete. A $1 million pavilion, funded by Macedon Ranges council, the state government and Kyneton District Soccer Club, includes change-rooms for male and female players to help cater for an increasing number of women and girls playing the roundball game. Works also included upgrades to older buildings and public toilets and landscaping and connection to recycled water via an automated irrigation system. A new roundabout at the corner of Barkly Square has also improved traffic near the sports ground, which has two soccer pitches, social and umpires’ rooms. Soccer club president Ron Cole said an influx of female talent was behind the push for better facilities.
‘‘Last year, we fielded an underage girls side for the first time. This year, we’ve got 25 girls across three teams, and 15 women.’’ Across all teams, participation is up 40 per cent this year. Cole said the new pavilion and recent beautification works made the reserve a more welcoming place for a growing number of players and fans. ‘‘It just enhances the whole area and shows people we are going places.’’ Mayor Jennifer Anderson thanked the soccer club and residents for their patience during the major works. ‘‘The buildings and oval are looking great and provide a home for soccer players and clubs in the area, not to mention an active recreational space for all residents to enjoy.’’ Matt Crossman

Short order for friendship Romsey’s Sandra Chestnutt and Ron Jackson (pictured) are enjoying the benefits of a food-sharing initiative that is rolling out across the Macedon Ranges. The pair are part of Casserole Club, through which volunteers, such as Ms Chestnutt, prepare an extra meal for a neighbour who is older and/or unable to cook for themselves. The program not only provides a healthy home-cooked meal but helps isolated people establish new friendships. Some cooks opt to deliver meals to diners, while others, like Ms Chestnutt, make the sharing of food a social occasion. More than 150 meals have been shared since Casserole Club was launched at Romsey and Lancefield in October last year. Macedon Ranges council will hold a celebratory cook-up

Sunbury and Macedon Ranges livestock farmers are being urged to prepare for a dry finish to the year. With the Bureau of Meteorology recently confirming an El Nino weather forecast, the state government is encouraging producers to review feed management plans, weigh up selling options and look at water reserves. Farmer Angus Crawford, who raises sheep and cattle on 2000 hectares near Clarkefield, said rainfall totals since last spring had been disappointing. ‘‘We haven’t had rain run-off for a couple of years now, so the dams are dry,’’ Mr Crawford said. ‘‘We’ve been feeding our stock since Christmas.’’ Mr Crawford said it was crucial that farmers did not wait to make decisions about feed and water. Lachlan King, leading animal health officer for the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources, said farmers needed to prepare their budgets and make sure they had the flexibility to act early. ‘‘If there’s an El Nino event, it is often associated with drought and significant seasonal impact,’’ Mr King said. ‘‘If conditions deteriorate further, prices for sale stock may drop dramatically, agistment may become less available, fodder prices could rise and off-farm employment may become difficult to find.’’

New field of dreams When you wish upon a star … or if you get a chance to speak, your dreams may come true. The Field Trip, a young people’s leadership club, will start in Lancefield in August and is offering Macedon Ranges people aged 10-17 the chance to share their dream and get $500 to help make it real. The grant is part of a broader program designed to mentor and equip teens with leadership skills. Field Trip founder Paul Kooperman says the grant, which will be awarded by a judging panel including musical theatre student Syd Zygier (pictured), is open to people who are able to articulate their dreams, whatever they may be. ‘‘It could be for a class or a trip; it could be they have an opportunity to be introduced to someone and they need to travel … it could
even be for something like a cooking course,’’ Mr Kooperman says. ‘‘They just need to be able to lay out what their dream is, how the money will help, and then it will be up to the panel.’’ Mr Kooperman says The Field Trip’s model, which has been refined after a false start earlier this year, is designed to train young leaders ‘‘to be givers, not takers’’. The free group is led by youngsters Owen Phillips, Emily Jeffrey and Chloe Smith. It will meet at Lancefield Mechanics Hall every Sunday from August 2. A weekend retreat for senior citizens is among coming projects. More details about The Field Trip or the grants: www.thefieldtrip.co Matt Crossman

On about 0.1 hectares within a walk of Gisborne Secondary College and town centre, this house of about 20 squares with a Cape Cod feel is surrounded by lovely gardens and has an outdoor entertainment area that families will relish. Not only is there a large gabled pergola which perfectly frames Mount Macedon views, there’s also a fenced, in-ground pool rimmed with paving – not to mention plenty of space for play. There are four bedrooms, each with a wardrobe, that share a bathroom with spa. A big family-meals area with floating floorboards is next to a kitchen with a modern-country style where timber benchtops, lots of white cupboards, an electric cooktop and stainless-steel underbench oven make it a pleasing work space. There’s also an attic rumpus room with carpet and stylish dormer windows.
Within minutes of everything Lancefield has to offer, including schools, churches and Lancefield Park, this appealing family abode has far more than initially meets the eye. It has a good mix of contemporary edge and the charm of pitched, limed timber ceiling, exposed bricks, gorgeous floorboards and cedar blinds. The main bedroom has an en suite with a basin set in an eye-catching period vanity unit, while the main bathroom has a spa. A big living room has a wood heater and outdoor access, and there’s a dining room with floorboards and space for a study nook. The kitchen is a treat, with timber benchtops, white cupboards, corner pantry, Bosch dishwasher, electric cooktop and new electric wall oven. A large, gabled pergola above a merbau deck has wheelchair access from the backyard, which is planted with fruit trees. Ducted heating, split-system, tank and town water, a huge shed/workshop and a double carport are other keynotes.

Life on the Mount is looking good with this classic tri-level abode on a sprawling block of about 0.2 hectares, replete with garden areas and natural bushland. The first of four bedrooms is on the entry level as is the main bathroom with slate floor and wall tiles and a spa – and there’s a two-way toilet and laundry adjoining. The remaining bedrooms on the upper level include the main with walk-in wardrobe and chic en suite with raised vanity basin. A carpeted living room near the front door has an angled timber-lined ceiling and a wood heater against an exposed brick wall. On the middle level, there’s a huge, slate-tiled family-meals area with dado panels and wood heater. The modern kitchen has exposed bricks that juxtapose with soft-blue streamlined cabinetry, electric cooktop and stainless-steel wall oven and dishwasher. A split-system, ducted vacuum, water tank, a large Laserlite covered deck, utility sheds, carport and garage/workshop are included.
When a beautifully presented, four-bedroom (plus study) house sits on about 0.17 hectares of land, it’s likely that families looking for expansive indoor-outdoor space will be lining up for a look. The decor of white wall paint, latte-toned floor tiles and carpet and white roman blinds is at once modern and light-enhancing. Of the four bedrooms (three with wardrobes), the main has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite with dual vanity basins. The main bathroom, tiled in white (with mosaic feature strip), is light and bright. A carpeted lounge room is to the left of a large foyer, with the tiled family-meals area around the kitchen is big and streamlined. White cupboards, white benchtops and glass splashback, an island bench, Smeg dishwasher and new cooker with wok ring equip the cooks’ domain. The back verandah serves as an entertainment-relaxation zone and has a barbecue. Gas central heating and four-car garage (with back roller door) are other features.

RIDDELLS CREEK 71 Sandy Creek Road, 3431 LJ Whorlow: 9740 9000
Price: $755,000 – $795,000
Whether it’s to stake a claim on peaceful surrounds, run a pony for the kids, lap up summertimes in the pool, provide kids with their own playground, putting some pennies in the piggy bank through subdivision (subject to council approval) or leasing out the self-contained flat, this property of about 0.7 hectares is a bit of a dreamcatcher. With pretty Sandy Creek as its rear boundary and great Thai food, coffee and the best yoyo cookies around just down the road, the double-brick house has all the ingredients of a cracker from the ’80s – slate floor tiles, lots of exposed bricks and beams, and an undeniable sense of solidity.

Beyond a full-width verandah trimmed with ivy, the skylit foyer has, to the right, a carpeted study (or fourth bedroom) with three-door closet. Around a stacked-stone wall is the main bedroom with a walk-in wardrobe, skylit en suite and garden/pool views. Two other bedrooms with wardrobes are down a hallway from the family room, as are a separate toilet, laundry with closet and workbench, main bathroom with timber vanity unit and a spa beneath a large window bringing outside greenery into focus. To the left of the foyer, a carpeted lounge-dining room has a cast-iron (natural) gas log fire set in exposed brick; the
dining room end has access to the outdoor area. Next is the family-meals area with floating floorboards, white-painted wall panels, blockout roller blinds and a wood heater. The adjoining kitchen, with servery window to the dining room, has a stack of white cupboards and drawers, dishwasher, underbench oven and electric cooktop. The large, gabled pergola above paving has bistro-blind shelter and immediate access to the fenced, in-ground, solar-heated salt pool rimmed with brick paving. room. This is a bonus for guest or rental accommodation, or simply as an adjunct to entertainment. A fenced playground with cubby house is at the bottom of the garden, while several arbours, a latticed fernery with pond and brick-paved walkways are part of lovely surrounding gardens. Dense bulb planting promises a riotous spring-time display and roses pop up everywhere. A large paddock has several fruit trees and there are two sheds (one with power and concrete floor), a triple carport and an extended double garage/workshop. WHY DO PEOPLE DOWNSIZE? It’s a fairly common phenomenon - people move into a smaller home,, compacting their lives and trading in space for other benefits. There is a whole host of situations that can explain the transition, some of which ha been revealed in research. Have have Ha a look - are these reasons you would consider for moving into a smaller piece of real estate? Children wo lea leaving home -They all fly the nest at some point, whether it’s to university, sity, sity, a new country or finally into their own home, but once kids leave lea home,, it can leave lea a big gap in your house that can’t be filled. An Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI) study into reasons forr downsizing found that people over 50 often cited children leaving lea home as a reason for downsizing. If your young ones have ha left, it could be an option for you to consider consider. Financial gain -The AHURI report also noted that it was more financially viable for many respondents to downsize to a new property. ty This gives you much more leverage when it comes to ty. buying a new home. And if you’re after something much smaller, smaller you’re lik y paying likel pa less to buy it as well - especially if you go for a unit. It can be difficult to let go of a property you have ha held onto for a lengthy period of time, but sometimes the empty can become overwhelming. Finding out more about the benefits of downsizing could be a great first step to making yo your urself self comfor comfor tab table le,, both in life life and in finances.

GET YOUR GARDEN READY FOR SALE
responded to promptly and we would happily
Being outside is widely accepted as being good for your health, so it follows that one of the first things people will gravitate towards in a property is the backyard. If you’re one of many people blessed with even a small patch of green grass, putting that space to its best use with landscaping can significantlyy increase the likelihood lik of a good sale. Here are a few tips to get your garden in ship sale shape. Tidy and clean- The first step toward making your garden look like lik a lush oasis is to get it spick and span. This means throwing out any old toys, rubbish or gardening waste.. W Washing down fences and the driveway eway eway with a high pressure hose will also make mak a world of difference diff . Basic tasks like lik weeding garden beds and using an edging tool along paths can make we mak an untidy space look much fresher fresher. Lawning La it overer Turf Australia has found that 73 per ercent of buyers want a lawn la primarily as a safe saf playing pla area for their children, and the majority of people want a lawn la to be at least 30 per cent of the total size of the home.Low maintenance is best- Before Bef you start hacking away at the hydrangeas, check with your real estate agent. They’ll be able to tell you what people in the area are looking for in the area and what landscaping however small - will add the most value. Casting the net wide is often a good strategy - not everyone will want a high-maintenance garden, but it’s easier to add to an existing plot than to redo the entire thing.Add some basic shrubbery wers and some colourful potted flo flowe rs.

SWIMMING POOL READY
Is there a community based story & or an event you would like publicised? Email the details to: reception@ljwhorlow.com.au
Swimming pools are a great addition to any home. If you’re one of the lucky people to have ha one in your property, ty you’ll be happy to know ty, that they are an increasingly popular feature among buyers, particularly ly in warmer climates. There’s no time like lik the present to get the pool in prime position for when it comes to selling your home, so here’s some handy tips: Scrub a dub- Give the pool a good clean and treatment to mak it look fresh and ready for inspection. Crystal clear, make clear pristine water can make mak your outdoor space sparkle, but also consider repainting a concrete pool and retouching grout if it’s tiled. Check capping for rust or deterioration and have ha an expert examine the filter and pump system. Legality -make -mak sure that you’re across all local government legislation and regulation surrounding pools - your buyers won’t want to spend a great deal of money on fixing up a non-compliant swimming pool. Fences are generally the most contentious aspect of this area, so consider getting a second opinion and the boundary gates and fences professionall prof y inspected if you’re unsure. Investigate what legal paperwork you need bef before sale negotiations begin. While this won’t apply to all homes, some local councils require a certificate or other piece of evidence that proves the pool complies with their ru rules. les.

Local market insight is the key to buying property at the right price
Upgrading or Downgrading Life changes naturally occur in the family when additions are made to it or when children fly the coop. When the decision to have children is made or the mother-in-law is moving in, things can get suddenly
Data is king and the more you have the better informed you are. That’s why Domain has added more property data to its listings so you can gain a better understanding of the value of property in your area. You can now see past sales activity, local sales and the suburb’s performance over the last 8 years. The best part is, it’s free!
cramped. That’s the time you’ll be thinking of upgrading to a larger and more expensive home. Now location considerations also change. In this case being near a school, parks, shops and even a hospital may suddenly become important criteria. But, once again, the longer you delay in making the change, the harder it becomes because the market will have climbed in the meantime. So moving sooner rather than later enables you to buy in at a more favourable price, giving you more opportunity for capital growth.

their own pads and suddenly the house seems too big. DM1400529
Wouldn’t it be nice if you could see what similar properties have sold for? Well it’s now only a click away. The graph in the property to the right shows the spread of similar properties at different price points from the lowest to the higher ends of the market.
Now let’s look at the opposite situation—down-sizing. In this case maybe the children are moving into
Oddly enough, the situation reverses itself and you have the luxury of waiting to purchase until the market is in a strong growth phase. The reason for this is that you can maximise the capital growth on your current property when you go to sell and minimise the mortgage (if any) on your next home or maximise any left-over funds for you to utilise in your life of retirement. If we can assist you on any real estate matter such as a sale, purchase, letting or development, feel free to contact me John Dunlop on 9744 2555 at any time or call into our friendly offices at Sunbury and Gisborne for a confidential talk.

SPORT Dogs, Tigers’ bitter rivalry gains a sharper edge The tradition of massive clashes between Gisborne and Kyneton in the Bendigo Football League will continue this Saturday in a game that is being touted as a mini-final. Both sides sit a game behind fifth-placed Kangaroo Flat, with the three sides and Castlemaine seemingly fighting for the last spot in the finals. A win to either side will help their finals hopes and put a dint in those of the losers. The Bulldogs enter the match on the back of three wins in a row. On Saturday, they smashed Maryborough 23.17 (155) - 8.7 (55).
Bulldogs coach Rod Sharp believes his side is still improving. “We have a bit of momentum and the boys have worked really hard in the last three to four weeks to be fitter,” Sharp said. He said that in the second half of the Maryborough clash, the players were full of confidence and enjoying the game. Especially pleasing for the coach was that the younger players stepped up. “Four out of the six among our best were 19 or under.” Sharp said it was a fine outcome given that full-forward Matt Knox wasn’t playing.
“Matt has scored 40 per cent of our goals and we still had 40 scoring shots without him,” Sharp said. “The communication on the ground is getting so much better and I’m massive on that. We’re getting more voices … it becomes easier when you have 17 other people talking, and credit to all the boys who are listening.” Sharp knows the significance of getting the points against the Tigers. “Basically, the team that gets the four points is a better chance of making finals,” he said. “Both sides can’t play finals … the one
that loses is more likely to not play them.” In a boost for the Bulldogs, Hamish Govan has returned to the club from playing with Woodend-Hesket. “Hamish thought he wanted to try something different and it didn’t work for him,” the coach said. “He will be a vital part for the next six to seven weeks.” The Tigers lost to Sandhurst 19.13 (127) 11.12 (78) at the weekend. In A-grade netball, Gisborne won and Kyneton lost. Tara Murray

Bombers’ tweaks do it By Tara Murray Riddell came out on top in the battle between ladder leaders of the Riddell District Netball League on Saturday. The Bombers and Macedon both entered the match undefeated, having won all their games by at least five goals. But the Bombers’ 49-44 result wasn’t a convincing win as, for much of the first three quarters, the Cats controlled the game. Their dominance caused the Bombers to tweak their line-up at quarter-time as they looked to stop goal shooter Bec Colwell. It didn’t work, with the Cats extending the lead out to six goals in the second quarter. They still led by four goals at half-time. The Bombers again tweaked their line-up and the moves seemed to work early in the third quarter as the Bombers drew level. As they did last week, the Cats fought back and, by the end of the third quarter, 30 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 30, 2015
had the lead back out to four goals. The last quarter started the same as the third, with the Bombers coming out fast and levelling the scores. Under pressure to hold strong in defence, the Bombers’ Danni Davidson made several timely intercepts. This time, the Bombers pressed on to take, and hold, the lead. While the Cats fought back, they couldn’t match it in the closing stages. Bombers’ coach Lauren Close said the match was what she expected. “We definitely turned up today knowing it would be tough until the last quarter, and it turned out to be. “I don’t think you can ever be confident against Macedon. “Bec [Colwell] coming back has been a massive addition to their team – it was never going to be over until the final siren.” Close said her side was still working out
its best line-up. The move of Davidson to goalkeeper and Bridget Aughton to goal defence proved to be vital moves in the second quarter. “We needed a bit more movement around her, as Elyce [Carlyle] was getting stuck on the body a little bit, and Danni is good aerially and a good voice down there, too. “We have a few new players, It’s about trying to work out what works best, especially as we won’t meet them again until finals. “It’s not our full team; we are going to get better.” Close, who made a comeback from a knee reconstruction against Rockbank, said she was about four weeks away from returning to the court full-time. In other games, Rupertswood, minus captain Tess Abbott, smashed Kilmore, 104-10, while Lancefield defeated Melton Centrals, 44-33, and Romsey defeated Wallan, 62-47.
Sunbury Lions women’s football team couldn’t have asked for a better start to the season in the Victorian Women’s Football League. Putting off-season off-field turmoil behind them, the Lions have well and truly been the standout in the west division. In the opening nine rounds the unbeaten Lions scored 820 points and conceded only 48. Coach Kerry Saunders said she had no complaints. “We are still on track [for where we want to be],” she said. “It’s going all right and we still have new players coming in but we’re still looking for four to five more to give us a bit more depth.” Saunders said there was a good mix of experienced and new players. “The experienced players have been able to do what they do and have been helping teach the new players,” she said. The Lions beat Jacana 13.9 (87) - 1.1 (7) on Saturday, with Kristie Dudley, Brooke Surgeon and Kelsie Gill all kicking three. Saunders said it was pleasing to see some youth girls play in the senior team. “Qwai Sibbald and Jemayne Albrecht have come across from Craigieburn youth girls as they don’t have a senior team,” she said. “Stacey Smith from Sunbury youth girls has also come up. “They can all play and are loving it and are stepping up. It’s good to introduce them into the women’s game.” Saunders said she would continue to challenge the players. “To cover ourselves, we will continue to teach the players new positions and rotate them in case of injuries,” she said. “They’re keen not just to play but also [to] learn new things.” On the injury front, the Lions have only one major player missing, captain Natasha Hardy, who hurt her knee in the final minutes of the Lions’ round eight match. Despite fears it could mean season over, scans showed Hardy should miss only four to six weeks. A continuation of the early-season form is likely to see the Lions promoted. The Lions were in a higher grade but a shortage of numbers meant the club was put in the west division as it tried to avoid folding. “If we win [the grand final] we’ll be promoted,” Saunders said. “The challenge is whether some of the girls want to play in a higher division. We’ll assess that closer to the end of the season.” Tara Murray

Perennial finalist Riddell was sneaking under the radar in the Riddell District Football League this season. But not any more. After previously failing to beat any of the sides in the top six, the Bombers faced Macedon, a side on the rise, at Riddells Creek Reserve on Saturday. Like the Bombers, the Cats had come undone against sides in the top six but had impressed in close losses against Romsey and Diggers Rest. Less than a goal separated the two teams at half-time, but class and experienced players came to the fore in the second half as the Bombers won 15.11 (101) - 12.5 (77). Bombers coach Troy Scoble said it was his side’s best win in more than a year. “It was probably our best win in a couple of years, to be honest,” he said. “It took a really good four-quarter effort. We have a really young side this year and we needed to beat a really quality side. “We’ve been able to get over the sides below but this was the first time in a year we’ve beaten a side above us. “There is nothing between us and Macedon and it could have gone the other way; it was a real crunch game for us.” It didn’t look like it would be a good day for the Bombers early, with star Cats forward Marcus Kenny kicking four of the Cats’ first five goals. The Bombers midfield made sure it didn’t continue in the second half and Kenny was barely sighted. “No backman in this competition can really play on Kenny, so you have to stop the supply,” Scoble said. “We’re fortunate to have Matty Darby. He provided a good match-up for Kenny with a bit of speed and broke even in the 50/50s. “[But] we felt it was more the midfield dominance that stopped Kenny.” It was the experienced heads of Hayden Ross, Paul Sahlberg and Brian Ruffell that were best afield. “To win games like that you need your experienced guys to play well,” Scoble said. “They’re all premiership-winning players, so we look for them in big games.” With the exception of the round 14 clash with Melton Centrals, the Bombers face sides in the top seven all the way until the end of the season. “We’re under no illusions,” Scoble said. “ I think the top seven teams will even up and I think it’s the closest [season] I’ve seen the league.” Rupertswood, Romsey, Lancefield and Diggers Rest won the round’s other games.

Gisborne (pictured) defeated Gisborne 5-35 to Woodend’s 1-23. In section 3, Kyneton defeated Woodend, while Woodend tasted success in section 4 with victory over Gisborne. The spring season starts early August and the association needs more teams. Sunbury Jets’ finals dreams are still alive in Big V division 1 men’s basketball, despite mixed results at the weekend. The Jets lost the first game on Saturday night to Blackburn. Not much separated the two all night, as both teams had a high shooting percentage. In the end, Blackburn won 102-95. Javari Williams top-scored with 28 points as five players made double figures. On Sunday, the Jets bounced back to beat Keilor 91-62. The match gave the Jets a chance to give bench players more court time. Sammy Gazzo top-scored with 23 points. The Jets sit in 10th spot on the ladder, one game behind eighth-placed Chelsea. The Jets women lost to Western Port 78-71.
Golf
Bob McLennan won the Romsey Golf Club’s monthly medal on Saturday. Playing strokes and putts format, McLennan, fresh from returning from holidays, won 79-11-68 from Dave Richardson on 96-23-76. Lyn Robinson was the best of the women. In the women’s knock-out qualifying finals on Wednesday, Elaine Scanlon, Kath Jekabsons, Pam Drummond and Lyn Robinson won their match-ups. They have now made it through to the semi finals.

Sunbury Tigers lost their Victorian Rugby League first division match to North West Wolves, 60-4. The Tigers, struggling with numbers, have used a lot of players in both reserves and senior matches. The Tigers are sixth on the ladder after 10 rounds.

Thunder roars again as Easts chalk up triple victories East Sunbury is ecstatic after winning its second game of the season, but it wants desperately to add to its tally in Essendon District Football League division 2. The Thunder won only two games in two years before the start of this season but on Saturday made it two wins for the season for the first time, defeating Burnside Heights 14.19 (103) - 7.8 (50). It was a good day for the Thunder with its reserves and under-18s also winning. Coach Steve Grey said the result was another sign of hard work paying off. “It was the strongest side we have put on the
park and it just shows our depth with our twos winning by eight goals,” Grey said. “The first quarter, we were inaccurate and missed easy shots in front of goal. We could have easily had five. “We dominated the game and kept playing well for a lot longer,” he said. “We got better and better, and the confidence grew. It’s the first time we’ve won a final quarter this year.” Ashley Fleming and Kamen Ogilvie were the Thunder’s best, not for the first time this season. “Fleming has been playing in the ruck the last few weeks. We weren’t getting enough balls
inside 50 to use him to the best of his ability. He was being double-teamed, which they can’t do in the ruck,” Grey said. “He controlled the game, and it has also benefited Kamen, who is playing well in the middle with him.” Dean Johnson, Mitchell Johns and Jake Spiteri are some of the youngsters who have been standing up. Grey says there are two clear aims for the rest of the season: beat a side other than Burnside Heights and finish sixth on the ladder. “The next step is to beat a quality side and get reward within the league. There would be
some satisfaction to be able to do that. The aim is to finish sixth. We can’t finish any higher than that, but sixth sounds a lot better than eighth.” The result added to a big week for the club with AFL legend Doug Hawkins taking training during the week. “I know Doug, and he came out and took training and the boys really benefited from it,” Grey said. “It was a big bonus and hopefully he’ll be back a few more times before the season is out.” Tara Murray 31 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 30, 2015
