MH17 victims honoured By Matt Crossman When James Rizk hears the flight number MH17, his first thought is not of the senseless act that claimed the lives of his parents, Albert and Maree, along with those of 296 others. Instead, he immediately pictures the loving couple who gave him and his sister so much. They were more than simply their parents – respected in business and the community, the couple were an example of a way of living that inspired others. ‘‘Sometimes it’s in the morning, sometimes it’s in the afternoon, but you do think about them every day,’’ James said. ‘‘When I hear the flight number, there’s not really any anger or grief, so much … I just

picture them and everything that they were.’’ It’s been a difficult year for James, 22, and Vanessa, 23, who will mark the first anniversary of the MH17 tragedy this week. Albert and Maree were returning from the Netherlands on board the Malaysian Airlines plane when it was shot down over Ukraine on July 18 last year. The couple’s local legacy will be celebrated during a memorial football match at Clarke Oval on Saturday. James and Vanessa worked closely with Sunbury Lions Football Club and Ballarat Football League to plan the event, at which their parents’ names will be painted on the ground. Vanessa will speak at the club’s pre-game lunch, and release two balloons ahead of a minute’s silence.

James plans to take to the field for the Lions against Redan to play for a memorial trophy. The family’s ties to the club run deep – Albert was a committee member and Maree worked in the canteen. James said the support of the Lions, along side the broader Sunbury community, had been invaluable. ‘‘And for [club president] Jack Ogilvie and the committee, along with the Ballarat league, to organise this special day, our family is very grateful,’’ he said. ‘‘Their support over the past year has been everything.’’ James, who now works in the Raine and Horne real estate office where his father had much success, said he relished the chance to take to the football field.

‘‘Footy has been one of those things that’s helped keep my mind off everything,’’ he said. ‘‘That’s the great thing about footy clubs, they enable you to take a break from what’s going on and just have a good time with your mates.’’ Lions’ vice-president Hedley Duhau said about 180 people had booked for the pre-game lunch, three times’ the regular figure. He said a post-match function would wrap up the club’s efforts to honour two ‘‘extremely community-minded people’’. ‘‘Albert and Maree were just good, hard-working, honest and reliable people,’’ Duhau said. ‘‘They always had a smile and a kind word to say.’’ James and Vanessa will attend a national memorial service in Canberra on Friday.

Sunbury backs outdoor smoke ban A push for a trial smoking ban in a popular Sunbury dining precinct is gaining momentum, with a formal submission being made to Hume council. The Sunbury Business Association and Sunbury Community Health have supported a proposal to stop people lighting up outside shops and restaurants in O’Shanassy Street, initially for six months. The campaign, led by traders including Vic

and Carmel Scerri, of Vic’s Food and Wine, had the approval of an overwhelming majority of residents surveyed late last year. As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, Mr Scerri said a ban would have significant benefits for people working, shopping and eating in the street’s shops and cafes. ‘‘Nobody wants to have someone blowing smoke at them,’’ Mr Scerri said. A detailed submission presented to the council revealed that 82 per cent of respondents agreed that designating a smoke-free outdoor

included significant research in support of a smoking ban. ‘‘One option submitted was to ban smoking in the street, while the other option related to council helping businesses to make their premises smoke-free,’’ she said. ‘‘We will explore both options as we prepare a report for council to consider in October.’’ Quit Victoria policy manager Kylie Lindorff said the organisation supported the creation of smoke-free outdoor dining and drinking areas across the state.

dining area in central Sunbury was a great idea. A total of 72 per cent said a ban in O’Shanassy Street would make them more likely to choose a restaurant or cafe there. Ms Scerri said the family business was ‘‘very happy with the idea’’. ‘‘People say, ‘Aren’t you worried about losing business?’, but I think we’d actually get more because of it,’’ she said. ‘‘This could greatly enhance the area.’’ Council’s city communities director, Margarita Caddick, said the submission

Reckoning for permit parking hogs

Councillor in recovery after stroke

A Kyneton disability permit holder has urged motorists to think of others before parking illegally, amid a spike in numbers of people doing the wrong thing. Macedon Ranges council figures show 22 motorists have already been nabbed this year for parking in a disability parking space without a valid permit – up from three last year and five the year before. The increase is due in part to proactive patrols, launched in response to complaints from residents with mobility problems. Kyneton resident Margaret Baker said she was frustrated by the number of motorists taking spaces reserved for people with disabilities. ‘‘Every time I go to the shops, there’s at least one, if not two, cars parked in those spots without a sticker,’’ Ms Baker said. ‘‘Some people seem to think, I’ll only be a minute. But for those of us with walking sticks or a frame, it does put a lot of pressure on us. ‘‘If we have to park further away, not only is it a greater distance to walk there, it’s further to walk back, sometimes with a trolley and then return it.’’ Ms Baker said she often saw people using a valid permit that had been issued to a friend or relative, who was not in the car with them. ‘‘One day you may find yourself in the position of needing a disability permit and the availability of close parking at your destination,’’ she said. ‘‘Please think before you take one of these valuable spots.’’ Council assets and operations director Dale Thornton said there were about 1700 permit holders in the municipality. ‘‘So far in 2015, 45 per cent of fines issued have been for expired permits so we are encouraging everyone to double-check that they have a valid permit,’’ Mr Thornton said. People who park in a disability parking space without a valid permit can be slapped with a $148 fine.

Veteran Hume councillor Jack Ogilvie remains in hospital after having a severe stroke last week. The Sunbury-based councillor was helping organise a community event when he took a turn on July 6. He was taken by ambulance to Sunshine Hospital before being transferred to the Royal Melbourne for surgery. Fellow councillor Jack Medcraft said Cr Ogilvie, who returned to Sunshine Hospital on Thursday, was sitting up in bed, talking and in good spirits. ‘‘The doctors are astounded,’’ Cr Medcraft said. ‘‘He’s defying the medical odds.’’ Cr Medcraft said Cr Ogilvie’s family was ‘‘holding up well’’. Earlier in the week, Cr Medcraft said Cr Ogilvie had been under a lot of pressure in recent weeks. ‘‘We just want to see him back doing what he loves doing and that’s working for his community,’’ Cr Medcraft said. ‘‘That’s exactly what he was doing when this happened.’’ Hume chief executive Domenic Isola said Cr Ogilvie was in council’s thoughts. ‘‘We wish him a speedy recovery,’’ he said. Mr Isola said residents who needed to speak about council matters were encouraged to contact other councillors in Jacksons Creek ward. Cr Ogilvie, who is president of Sunbury Lions Football Club, has been a major player in many community initiatives since the mid-1980s. A former Hume mayor, he was first elected to the old Bulla council in 1990.

Ganging up on diabetes But, over the years, member numbers dwindled, a fate Mr Laidler wants to reverse. He’s hoping National Diabetes Week (July 12-18) will lift awareness of the disease and the effectiveness of support groups, and encourage others in the area to join. “It gives you an insight into how other people manage their diabetes and makes you aware that you’re not on your own,” he said. “It doesn’t have to be a death sentence.” Neither diabetes nor age has slowed down the 64-year-old, who owns and runs a kennel at Bulla. He says with careful management, diabetics can live a normal life. Details: www.diabetesaustralia.com.au Sunbury Diabetes Support Group: 9307 1111 Lexi Cottee

When Bob Laidler knocked back an entire two-litre bottle of soft drink 11 years ago, he knew something was up. His sudden and intense sugar craving prompted him to see his doctor the following day, confirming his grim suspicion – he had type 2 diabetes. “There’d been a bit of stress in the family; we thought my wife had pancreatic cancer, but I have no history of it [diabetes] in the family,” the Bulla resident said. While his wife’s ill health turned out to be just a scare, Mr Laidler has had to manage living with his disease with medication, a balanced diet and frequent exercise, for more than a decade now. After being diagnosed, he joined the Sunbury Diabetes Support Group, which had about 30 members at the time and held regular meetings.

Hard choice: chill or bill stress By Matt Crossman Sunbury residents are seeking emergency funding to fix or replace ageing and inefficient heaters, as soaring energy costs continue to cause financial pain. Parents of children with special needs have also been forced to seek help to stop electricity bills piling up as they struggle to juggle heating costs with other household necessities. The Brotherhood of St Laurence is calling for an urgent review of the state’s electricity market, with a report revealing that household power bills have increased more than 200 per cent

in the past six years. CareWorks SunRanges manager Michael Austin said rising electricity prices, combined with welfare cuts and other cost of living increases, were making things difficult for some locals. He said the Sunbury-based emergency relief organisation dealt with many people who could not afford to even investigate cheaper heating options. ‘‘If you’re renting, many places only have electric heating or older gas appliances and that can be very expensive,’’ Mr Austin said. ‘‘It becomes a bit of a vicious cycle. Some people have to choose between being cold or

turning the heater on then dealing with bill shock.’’ Mr Austin said while no-interest loan schemes and hardship provisions could help in some cases, there was a need for improved frameworks to help people on low incomes avoid the pitfalls of rising energy prices. He urged anyone struggling to meet their financial obligations to seek help early. ‘‘Don’t simply hope the problems will go away,” Mr Austin said. Brotherhood of St Laurence senior manager Damian Sullivan said “battler” households were especially vulnerable to rising electricity

bills, with fixed charges making up 30-40 per cent of the annual cost. ‘‘The high fixed charges mean that these households, which generally use less electricity than high-income households, pay much higher average prices for their power,’’ Mr Sullivan said. ‘‘They also spend a bigger proportion of their weekly income on energy and it’s harder to find the money for electricity price rises when you are on a small household budget.’’ The Brotherhood’s research found that Victorian electricity disconnections increased from 6249 in 2007-08 to 34,448 in 2013-14.

‘All aboard’ call for rail survey By Matt Crossman A new group is giving Sunbury commuters a chance to have a say about controversial changes to train timetables. Sunbury Train Association (STA) formed in response to changes aimed at eventually stopping residents catching Bendigo-bound V/Line trains. To promote their case for better train services, STA is collating views about the impact of this Public Transport Victoria (PTV) decision. Spokeswoman Melissa Limb said STA wanted to hear from all sides of the debate.

The group, which hopes to collect at least 500 responses, will present its findings to PTV and Sunbury Labor MP Josh Bull. ‘‘We’re asking members of the community what they want from PTV in regards to the trains,’’ Ms Limb said. ‘‘Whether that’s eventual reinstatement of access to V/Line services or better provision of Metro services, we just want to know what people think.’’ As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, restrictions barring Sunbury commuters from V/Line trains will not be enforced until next January. The town will receive 10 extra peak-time Metro services a week, with the state government promising to investigate extra

off-peak services. Until now, Sunbury has received about half of the services that travelled to Watergardens. An online STA survey launched last week asks commuters when and where they catch trains and provides an opportunity for them to rate Metro trains for frequency, safety, reliability and speed. Participants can also share information about how the changes could impact on school pick-ups, work and education commitments and access for people with a disability. STA is considering letterbox drops and is seeking permission to survey commuters at Sunbury station.

Ms Limb said the group wanted to provide a balanced platform to ensure an accurate representation of views. “We’re in agreement that we need more services one way or another, but certainly the survey is going to give us what the community wants,” she said. A separate online petition calling for V/Line access until services are adequately replaced by Metro trains already has almost 1500 signatures. Another effort spearheaded by Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Bernie Finn has 100 supporters. To complete the STA survey, visit goo.gl/ forms/0OggpxqLMn

Wheeling towards healing A Macedon Ranges chef who has cooked for the likes of Prince William, Madonna, Bill Gates, Tom Hanks and Elton John, will serve up some decadent desserts this month at a fundraiser for Woodend’s Spokes of Hope group. Champagne and gourmet cheese platters will also be on the menu at the July 25 event, which will help a team of 14 cyclists edge closer to its $40,000 target for this year’s Peter Mac Ride to Cure Cancer. More than $28,000 has already been raised, including several hundred dollars collected by a group of pre-teen supporters who rode 1.1 kilometres around Woodend last Wednesday. Spokes of Hope spokesman Daron Jacks says this month’s Sweet Winter Night, at Norma Richardson Hall, will feature desserts prepared by Erica Crowther, who has worked at

Michelin-starred restaurants, and at Cliveden House for the late Queen Mother. Mr Jacks says the quality of food served will greatly exceed the night’s ticket price. ‘‘You can easily spend $50 if you go out these days, but this is going to be something really special. ‘‘It’s a chance for people to have a night out and enjoy some live music, a nice drink and some really fantastic food.’’ Details: goo.gl/UssebS The 200-kilometre Ride to Cure Cancer, raising funds for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, is on October 24-25. THE SUNBURY POLL – THE FACTS The Sunbury Poll was a non-compulsory postal ballot commissioned by the then Minister for Local Government and conducted in October 2013 by the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) across the whole of Hume City Council. All registered voters in the City of Hume were eligible to vote. The rules governing the Sunbury Poll, established by Local Government Victoria and the VEC were written to ensure consistency with the process for conducting council elections.

Conduct of the Poll A ballot pack was sent to all eligible voters. This contained the ballot paper and instructions on how to vote. In the ballot paper, voters were asked to vote “yes” or “no” for the proposal to establish a new Shire of Sunbury. The ballot paper package included the following information: “The ‘Sunbury Poll’ is a poll of voters within the existing boundaries of the municipal district of the Hume City Council to determine the level of support for a stand-alone Sunbury Shire Council.” A map was also provided that used Deep Creek to show an “indicative” boundary of Sunbury from Hume.

Results of the Poll (percentages have been rounded to the nearest whole number)

Out of the 118,708 eligible voters in Hume City Council, 51% took part in the poll. Across Hume 31% of the total eligible voters voted ‘yes’. This represented 60% of all those who participated in the ballot. A breakdown of the poll across the different suburbs within Hume is included in Sunbury Hume Transition Information Sheet 1 at www.sunburyhumetransition.vic.gov.au

THE SUNBURY POLL – CONCERNS

The Minister for Local Government has appointed Hon Frank Vincent AO QC and John Watson as Transition Auditors to provide independent advice on the best possible way forward for the transition of Sunbury out of Hume scheduled for 1 July 2016. Before the Transition Auditors report to the Minister they will provide opportunities: • for the local community to be informed about the implications of separation ² VXPPDULHV RI WKH ÀUVW WZR LQIRUPDWLRQ sheets that have been developed appear here. • to hear the views of interested groups and individuals. The Transition Auditors will be available to meet in your locality from the week commencing 29 June. Meeting times/locations will be advised. For appointments: Email sunburyhume.transition@delwp.vic.gov.au For the full information sheets, other information and to register your interest in the work of the Transition Auditors: Visit www.sunburyhumetransition.vic.gov.au

The Blacher Report, commissioned in early 2015 to review the process leading to the decision to establish a Sunbury council, highlighted a number of concerns about the poll process. The Blacher Report noted the Sunbury Poll was conducted to inform decision-makers about the views of residents prior to altering the structures of two municipalities. It concluded: • The poll should have been conducted in a way that ensured voters had access to all relevant information but this did not occur. This would have meant the ballot pack should have contained information on: - the proposed boundaries of the proposed new council - all the financial implications of separation – that is, what rates residents are likely to have to pay under the new arrangements - the impact on services and future capital works - a “yes” and “no” argument. • The information that was available was not reflected in subsequent decisions made about the establishment of the new council. - The Local Government Sunbury out of Hume Panel introduced a new concept – that Hume City Council should pay a cross subsidy to the new council. - This was not considered in the two KPMG reports on the potential impact on rates and services available on the Local Government Victoria website, nor was it canvassed in any way prior to the poll. Therefore voters were unaware that this cross subsidy would increase the rates payable by residents remaining in Hume City Council and reduce the rates of Sunbury residents. More details are included in the Sunbury Hume Transition Information Sheet 2 at www.sunburyhumetransition.vic.gov.au 530527

All go for Gisborne

The last piece of Gisborne’s revitalisation project is nearing completion, with the ordering and installation of street furniture and bike racks to complement these works. This project could not have been achieved without the assistance of state government funding, to the tune of $300,000, and council’s $100,000 contribution. VicRoads is surveying, doing underground assessments and soil testing at the New Gisborne overpass on Station Road. These planning works are in preparation for upgrading and installing two new roundabouts as well as widening the lanes under the overpass, with associated pedestrian and cycle access. The cost of these works is about $6.66 million, with the federal government contributing $5 million and the Victorian government $1.66 million. I’m pleased the council has been in a financial position to start the Gisborne early-learning centre construction ($3.3 million) and Dixon Field pavilion upgrade ($815,000) in this year’s budget. Both of these capital works projects are urgently required for the current and future growth of the Gisborne area and surrounding districts. Gisborne is going through a period of positive change and this can only be achieved by a cohesive effort by all levels of government and those many community volunteer organisations that inspire us to strive for a better quality of life for all of us, now and into the future. Safeguard our freedoms

I think we should be very thankful that, in Australia, we have the privilege of being able to write letters to the editor and inquiries and complaints to our MPs. The ability to watch ABC programs like Four Corners, Q&A and Mad As Hell should be safeguarded. We need to have satire and questioning debate, as well as informative material. I sometimes wonder if, in this country, these freedoms are under threat. We have just celebrated 800 years since the Magna Carta. Our long-held freedoms are very precious, especially freedom of speech. Recent developments in our country make me rather fearful that we might see assaults on our freedoms. Expo offers ways ahead By Matt Crossman Young job seekers looking for direction can find some answers at a free careers expo at Sunbury later this month. With youth unemployment in the north-west hovering around 20 per cent, Central Ranges Local Learning and Employment Network (LLEN) chief executive Trent McCarthy said it was important for young people to map out a career plan. He said the newly expanded Sunbury and Gisborne Careers and Jobs Expo was a great place to start with more than 45 exhibitors, including employers, universities and training providers, on hand to provide ideas and advice. ‘‘The whole idea is to encourage them to really step back and think about their career,’’ Mr McCarthy said. Gisborne’s Carly Barker is someone who has successfully followed local pathways. Ms Barker completed a medical administration traineeship with Gisborne Medical while still a student at Gisborne Secondary College. She’s now studying for a nursing qualification while working at the clinic. ‘‘I worked one day a week, every day for a year, which didn’t interrupt school and gave me a real head-start,’’ she said. ‘‘With so many things being online, you don’t necessarily have to travel … it’s definitely worth looking into the options that are out there.’’ Gisborne Medical general manager Riwka Hagen said ongoing training was a major part of the clinic’s workplace philosophy, making its involvement in the jobs expo a natural fit. ‘‘From medical to nursing to admin, our organisation is a great example of the many options available locally,’’ Ms Hagen said.

Central Ranges LLEN is partnering with Hume Whittlesea LLEN to promote this year’s expo. Hume and Macedon Ranges councils and the Sunbury Business Association are also on board. New school option for Ranges By Matt Crossman Macedon Ranges parents will soon have an another alternative to government and Catholic education, with a Gisborne school planning to offer an International Baccalaureate program within 18 months. Gisborne Montessori School already provides primary school tuition from its Barringo Road site founded on the principles of giving children individualised support and freedom within limits. The school hopes to offer an internationally recognised middle-

years program from 2017. The new secondary school will add another flavour to the area’s educational mix. As reported by Star Weekly in May, a new secondary school with a specialised arts stream is due to open at the former Macedon Grammar site next year. The Alice Miller School, named after a Swiss psychotherapist, will be a sibling school to Candlebark, near Romsey, which is owned by author and alternative education pioneer John Marsden. He bought the 32-hectare site in February. Macedon Grammar closed in

December last year with debts of more than $1.2 million. Gisborne Montessori principal Dianne Davis said the school had noticed an increasing need for secondary education catering for students who required a smaller, flexible environment with mentoring and individualised programs. She said smaller student-to-teacher ratios would support the academic strengths and weaknesses of each pupil and provide a good environment for children, including some who might have been bullied. ‘‘Familiar, well-known teachers, a small

school population and cosy grounds are less overwhelming and threatening to students who may have less confidence,’’ Ms Davis said. Gisborne Montessori plans to have a maximum of 20 students in each secondary year level, eventually leading to about 100 children. Entry will be by interview only. Up to two scholarships will be available each year based on financial need. An information night will be held at the school from 7pm on August 6. Details: goo.gl/Nblhda

Children with special needs are being given the chance to try football thanks to a new Auskick program in Sunbury. Rupertswood Football Club is teaming up with AFL Victoria and Sunbury Community Health to offer an all-abilities stream to run alongside its regular Saturday clinics. Co-ordinator Wayne Pierce (pictured with Andrew Clancy and some enthusiastic youngsters) says specially-trained coaches will take kids, including those with autism, through modified games and drills. The club will hold a bring-a-friend day this Saturday. Details: www.rupo.com.au Matt Crossman

a lot of sense. We frequently respond together in some of the outer metro areas, so this is a good way to ensure we can work as one.’’ Sunbury station officer Tony Smith said CFA firefighters would benefit from Mr van Ek’s knowledge of house and structure fires. ‘‘It’s great to have that exchange with someone with his experience in the MFB,’’ he said. ‘‘Obviously, they tend to do a lot more urban firefighting than we do. This program is a good way to identify differences between the organisations and show ways that we can make both of them better.’’ Firefighters are given the option of staying at their new station at the end of their secondment.

MFB firefighter Joffa van Ek is only a week into a stint with Sunbury CFA, but he’s already benefiting from his secondment. Mr van Ek, a nine-year veteran normally based in Sunshine, will spend a year with his outer metropolitan counterparts, sharing skills and information about procedures and equipment. The firefighter swap between the MFB and CFA is part of a broader effort to share knowledge and co-operation between the emergency organisations. ‘‘One thing I’ve found really enjoyable being

in an outer metro station, is working with the volunteer component,’’ Mr van Ek said. ‘‘Wherever you go, the career firefighters tend to be pretty similar, but that doesn’t mean we can’t learn things off each other.’’ Twelve members from each organisation are taking part in the secondment program, with city firefighters dispatched as far as Warrnambool and Mildura. Mr van Ek said he was looking forward to gaining more hands-on experience with bushfires over summer. ‘‘Since Black Saturday, and particularly the last three years, MFB has been increasing its involvement in outer areas,’’ he said. ‘‘It makes

Home of legendary eats

UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT

Built in 1857, Coach and Horses Inn was the first Cobb and Co coach stop outside Melbourne for those travelling to the gold fields.

Open 7 days Lunch & Dinner Great New Menu

Legend has it that three ghosts haunt the halls of the two-storey bluestone inn. Local folklore surrounding the pub is filled with tales of murder and robbery, giving Coach and Horses Inn a reputation as Australia’s most haunted hotel. New owners Gus Holland and Arthur Anastasiou have created a lovely space that provides patrons with classic, hearty Aussie meals. From the beef and guinness pie bathed in rich gravy, to roast pork served with roast potatoes and vegetables, diners can enjoy delicious meals in front of an open fire.

Head chef Sheona Coffey and second chef Ben Smith have designed a menu to meet the needs of all.

Beer Garden

“All soups are gluten free and vegetarian,” Gus says. “The seafood platter, porterhouse and filet mignon are all gluten free. “Both the mushroom and leek crepe and the ricotta and spinach cannelloni are vegetarian.”

Function Rooms

For entree, be tempted by deep-fried and crumbed camembert topped with a plum sauce or pan-grilled saganaki served on a roquette salad. Among the main courses, tender beef and reef is topped with fresh seafood and a creamy tomato sauce.

“Food is the centre of our world,” Gus says. “It’s where we go for celebration, special occasions and just to catch up. Around a table with a great meal, life couldn’t be better.”

The six hour, slow-cooked lamb shanks are served in their own juices, plated on a bed of fluffy mashed potato with vegetables and topped with a sweet jus. Options for a fine finish to your evening include chocolate pudding or a classic pavlova served with cream and fresh fruit. The historic stables at Coach and Horses Inn are also in use as an entertainment space for private functions, weddings and corporate events. “We have up-and-coming events like bands and cheap meal night,” Gus says.

Like a chateau in the woods, this double-storey, 30-square limestone house is loaded with charm. Its magnificent gardens include a wonderful oak tree, with a fire pit and seating underneath. The 1.62 hectare grounds have bushland spaces with walking tracks to explore, and a self-contained, multi-purpose studio/retreat. Entry to the main house is into a lounge room with fireplace, exposed limestone wall and deep sash windows with stained-glass sidelights. This links with a dining area, then a huge living room with customised cabinetry, a wood heater and floorboards. A conservatory-style window is a highlight of the kitchen which has gas cooking and a dishwasher. A downstairs bedroom has a walk-in robe and en suite; three more bedrooms with charming dormer windows are upstairs, including the huge main bedroom with walk-in robe and a classy en suite with clawfoot tub. Also up here are the main bathroom and a separate study-games room.

In premium Canterbury Hills estate, this handsome double storey on about 729 square metres has views from the upper floor in every direction, with a balcony off the main bedroom the best spot to take it all in. Four large bedrooms are upstairs, as is the main bathroom. Three bedrooms have built-in wardrobes, while the main has a fitted walk-in and an en suite with dual raised basins. The latte colour accents in here are repeated throughout. The large entry foyer is flanked by a study (through double doors), a powder room and an open lounge room which then links with the kitchen-meals zone. The kitchen has latte-toned, 40mm-deep benchtops in stone; underbench oven; gas cooktop; and dishwasher. A concrete area out back is the spot for a future pergola, and timber retaining walls define the upper level backyard. Other features are high ceilings, ducted heating, evaporative cooling, solar panels and a lock-up double garage with internal entry.

Real Estate Today Strong Views, Strong Charges Non-Australian citizens who are buying property in Victoria will face additional costs from 1st. July in the form of two controversial new taxes introduced by the Victorian government. Some critics of the move have described them as a “king-hit” to the real estate industry that will deter international investment in the state, and discourage the construction of new homes. Others regard it as a measure to mitigate the current surge in property purchases in Victoria by foreign nationals. The controversial state government-imposed charges will raise about $330 million over four years and apply to foreign nationals who purchase houses, apartments and vacant residential-zoned land in Victoria. Non-residents buying property will be charged the equivalent of 3 per cent of the purchase price. The surcharge will apply from

The dwellings spread over about 40 squares and are on about four hectares – not far from Woodend’s bustling village centre. The newer house has three bedrooms (main with walk-in wardrobe and en suite), an enormous separate living area, a meals zone and blackwood kitchen. The other house also has three bedrooms, a shared bathroom, three living zones (timber-lined cathedral ceilings) and a kitchen. Both have plenty of space and share a design aesthetic. It’s the kind of place that could inspire an artistic type or act as a foil for city life’s hectic glam – a true country weekender, with glimpses through bush foliage of the venerable Mount. The three fenced paddocks set up the property – known as Farmhaven – as a great spot to run a couple of ponies or to establish an orchard, chook run and vegie patch. Rural bliss.

In keeping with tradition, entry is via the back door and straight into a cosy sitting room with Tassie oak floorboards and a wood heater. Off this room are a laundry with open shelves, a bathroom with timber vanity unit and two bedrooms with wardrobes. Three more bedrooms are down a hallway, as are a separate toilet and a bathroom with floorboards and customised timber vanity unit. The main bedroom, zoned separately, has a walk-in wardrobe and compact en suite. Forming the heart of the house and linking with the sitting room are three

adjoining zones – kitchen-meals, dining and lounge. The kitchen is true country, with timber benches and cupboards, a utensil rack, a four-door pantry, dishwasher and Euro 900-millimetre gas cooker – very homey. The carpeted and wallpapered dining room next has cedar window frames and picture rails, as does the lounge room (through original ’50s glazed doors) that also has a gas heater and a door to the side verandah. A large study with floorboards, built-in cabinetry and lots of windows opens to a

large Laserlite-clad pergola above concrete, enclosed with flywire. This great room for summer looks out to leafy surrounds. An elevated deck on two sides, large and private, is another relaxation spot to sit and enjoy visiting wildlife. A garage, large storage shed with concrete floor and attached open bay, a water tank (also town water) and a fine collection of exotics and natives around the house are other attractions at a property that’s within 45 minutes of the city. 35 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 14, 2015

SPORT One-point loss plunges dagger into Jets’ finals hopes Sunbury Jets’ finals hopes are all but over after a heartbreaking loss to Latrobe City in Big V men’s division 1 basketball on Saturday night. With two rounds to go, the Jets are only one game outside the eight. But they are in 12th spot and have played one more game than most of the other sides fighting for the last two places in the finals. They face second-placed Shepparton and fifth-placed Melton in the last two rounds. On Saturday night, the Jets lost 88-87 to Latrobe City at Traralgon Basketball Stadium. The team was without import Javari Williams and several of the youth men, who

were playing for the youth side at Sunbury at the same time. After an even first quarter, the home side got going in the second and led by 12 points at half-time. The Jets slowly chipped at the lead in the second half and produced an even four-quarter shooting percentage but ultimately fell short. They shot 22, 22, 22, 21 in each of the quarters at a shooting percentage of at least 43.8 per cent. Harrison Salm, who has seen more court minutes in Williams’ absence in the past two weeks, top-scored with 26 points and had five assists. The Jets women also went down to the

Energy, losing 81-61 in what was a fairly one-sided game. It was a disappointing first half for the Jets who could muster only 16 points at a horrible 15 per cent shooting average. By contrast, Energy was shooting at more than 50 per cent. The Jets outscored them 45-36 in the second half but the game was effectively over by half-time. Kayla Theodore and Sallee Cook top-scored with 13 points each for Sunbury. It was better news for the Jets’ two youth sides, who had important victories on the way to finals and possible top-two finishes. The youth men’s team defeated Coburg

Bombers in final flourish By Tara Murray If Riddell is in touch at three-quarter time in its Riddell District Football League matches, other sides better watch out. For the second time in three weeks, the Bombers kicked away in the final term against a team with finals aspirations. On Saturday it was Diggers Rest’s turn, with the Bombers kicking the last four goals of the game to win 10.5 (65) - 5.15 (45). The Bombers made the most of their opportunities, having significantly fewer inside 50s and shots on goal than the Burras. The Burras could have been well in front at half-time but were wasteful in front of goal, kicking 1.9 while keeping the Bombers goalless in the second term. Bombers coach Troy Scoble said he thought his side was lucky to be within two points at the main break. “They are one of the best sides in the competition,” he said. “They controlled the game in the first half. We were thereabouts on the scoreboard, but we just couldn’t get it past the centre. “Then we got a couple of breaks and took the most of our opportunities. We’re just rapt … the boys have worked really hard so they deserve everything they get.” James Nolan kicked four goals for the Bombers, including his side’s first three. Matt Krul was given the job on Nolan after quarter-time, which meant the Burras had to rotate other players through the ruck, including Brent Tuckey. “Any time Tuckey isn’t inside 50 we are pleased,” said Scoble. The win means three in a row against potential finalists for the Bombers ahead of a clash with Romsey this week. “We were hoping to get one or two wins in this four-week period,” Scoble said. Burras coach Shaun Sims was disappointed. “They deserved to win – it’s as simple as that,” he said. “We controlled a lot of the play at times but couldn’t score. They went down and scored and took their opportunities.” “We just couldn’t use the ball well enough into our 50 and couldn’t convert when inside … that was due to the way they set up and the pressure and us not taking our opportunities.” The loss has put the Burras in fourth position. “If you are playing good footy, it doesn’t matter where you finish,” Sims said. “Our second half last week was really good and parts of today we were really good. There’s nothing separating the top six teams.” The Burras have been dealt a massive blow with news that ruckman Lenny Clarke will not return this season. After missing the first half of the season with injury he has decided against playing, preferring to give priority to his new job in the fire brigade. 36 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 14, 2015

72-60 in division 1 after leading from start to finish. Billy Feben top-scored with 27 points. The result keeps the Jets second on percentage ahead of Whittlesea. In youth league women’s division 2, the Jets now sit on top of the ladder after a 56-49 win against Camberwell, the two sides switching positions. The girls got off to a poor start in the first quarter with only seven points but finished the stronger of the teams. Alex Darby continued her good season, top-scoring with 15 points. Tara Murray

Sunbury seeks seniors’ coach Two successive grand finals and a talented young list make Sunbury Cricket Club attractive to coach, secretary Marty Kelders believes. The Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup club, which has finished runner-up the past two seasons, is on the hunt for a new senior coach. Jason Elliott isn’t continuing in the role, after taking over as a caretaker in the second half of the past season when Ray Davis stepped down. Kelders said the club has been talking to people, but hadn’t had any luck, yet. “There’s been a couple of irons in the fire, but nothing to talk about yet,” he said. “We are still open to offers and are hoping to attract some players from around the area. “We are still a very young team, and I think it’s an attractive offer for someone who wants to coach.” Kelders said because it is not one of the larger clubs, players could get opportunities they wouldn’t get elsewhere. “We are not a big club, compared to Sunbury United, Riddell and East Sunbury. “I would like to think we are successful, just a couple of players short of winning the premiership.” He said most of the side would be returning this season, with a couple of talented young players ready to step up again. “Jason [McGann] has been the backbone of the side, and everyone knows that,” Kelders said. “We have other good players coming through. “Stephen Treweek opened the batting and bowling as a 17-year-old and will only get better. “Jack Landt came good last year.” Kelders said McGann, who has previously coached the side, wouldn’t again step up to the main role. “Jason enjoyed captaining without having to coach last season,” he said. “He is very busy.” The club has already appointed coaches for its junior sides, and looks set to have two more teams than in the past season. “For the first time, we will have an under-11 team to go with under-16, under-14 and under-12 teams,” Kelders said. “Last year, we didn’t have an under-16 team. “We were only a couple of players short,” he said.

The Sunbury Lions not only had to overcome Melton South in Ballarat Netball League – they also had to overcome one of Australia’s best goal shooters. Melbourne Vixens shooter Karyn Bailey played in both A grade and C grade for the Panthers but she couldn’t help get the Panthers across the line. Lions won the A grade match 47-29. In the football, the Lions defeated the Panthers 27.9 (171) - 11.6 (72). Jack Landt kicked eight goals and Matthew Medcraft kicked five in a best afield performance. Riddell reigns in the rain By Tara Murray Riddell remained undefeated as the weather played havoc with other games in the Riddell District Netball League. The A-grade and B-grade sides of Macedon and Woodend-Hesket didn’t even get on the court because of the inclement weather and the Sunbury Kangaroos and Rupertswood match was called off a minute into the third quarter, with the Sharks leading 37-0 and playing as if they were on a dry court. But at Riddells Creek, the Bombers were

Coach steps up to bring Bulldogs back into the pack Gisborne Netball Club entered the weekend’s bye full of confidence it would be a contender, come finals’ time, in Bendigo Netball League. The Bulldogs sit third on the ladder after an up-and-down start to the season. In recent weeks, the Bulldogs of old have reappeared to win several close matches. Alongside injuries, the A-grade side has also had a change of coach. Simone Trevillian took on the role six weeks ago after Kerryn Jorgensen had to stand down due to other commitments. Trevillian said it had been a smooth transition into the head coaching role. “Kerryn stepped aside due to personal commitments. It has been really positive [among the players], and I was already assistant coach to her,” Trevillian said. “I’ve been involved with the club the last three to four years … it’s been a big step for me.” Trevillian said the catalysts for the season’s turnaround were a couple of close results in round seven and eight when the Bulldogs drew

with second-placed Sandhurst before a shock loss to South Bendigo. They have won their next four games since. “The match against Sandhurst really stood out, and we picked up our level of play. “The next week we were disappointing, but have found what we had against Sandhurst since,” Trevillian said. “We’ve had a few injuries, which haven’t helped, but it has been an outstanding team effort.” Trevillian, who has had to step up into A-grade from A-reserve due to players being unavailable, said this had given other girls opportunities to test their talent. “Maddy Stewart is injured and Polly [Salter] has been on holidays. Both will be back for finals. “We have missed Maddy in the shooting circle,” she said. “I have come up and played goals, while Claire Anderson is another who has stepped

up. Melinda Luke, who is an under-17, played her first game in the A-grade side as well. She has a lot of talent and will be a valuable player in years to come.” The Bulldogs’ last match was a win against arch-rival Kyneton. “We lost by 14 goals in round one against them, so it was good to get the win. This time we were up by 10 goals at three-quarter time,” Trevillian said. “They threw everything at us but we maintained our strength to get over the line.” The Bulldogs are looking at a top-third finish come finals’ time. “The first thing is we want to be competitive against ladder-leaders Golden Square this week,” Trevillian said. Young talent booming By Tara Murray Sunbury’s Courtenay Wragg is making the most of her opportunities in the basketball world. The 17-year-old, who has represented Vic Metro on several occasions, is starting to make her name known around the biggest women’s basketball competition in Australia, the Women’s National Basketball League. She is one of eight players picked for the Melbourne Boomers’ development squad for the upcoming WNBL season. For Wragg, it still doesn’t seem real. “My coach [at Bulleen Boomers] has pushed me to try out for a lot of sides with my junior basketball finishing at the end of this year,” she said. “You need to get to know people and take any opportunity which comes. “One day after junior training my coach said I should try out for the development squad, which was holding try-outs afterwards. “I made the top 25 and then later got an email saying I’d made the squad.” Being part of the squad means she’ll have the opportunity to train with the main side, which includes Australian players, with a small possibility of getting on the court in the WNBL season. “Training starts in August and we train with the main squad,” Wragg said. “We’re waiting until the WNBA girls come back . . . it’ll be pretty cool to train with [Phoenix Mercury player] Tess Madgen. “They’ll train three times a week and we’ll have at least two training sessions a week with them. “In every home game, three of the development girls suit up and are part of the squad for the day. “They have a full team so I doubt we’ll get on the court, although some of the older girls may get on the court late in one-sided games.” The point guard has put hard yards to get to where she is now, after starting at Sunbury and moving to Bulleen Boomers in under-14. “At the start [travelling from Sunbury to Bulleen] felt like forever,” she said. “It was hard with school [she is in year 11 at Penleigh Grammar] and having two hours travel a day.” Wragg has started thinking about what comes next with US college basketball, SEABL and Big V all options. Presently she is playing for Bulleen Boomers in Big V state championship. “I’d like to play SEABL,” she said. “[US] college is an option [after finishing school] but if I can get chances from Boomers or other sides in Australia I’d rather stay here. “If I get the opportunity to play WNBA, that would be amazing. “But I’d need to make a team for Australia first to get noticed.” 38 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 14, 2015

Tigers still to find their bite First step was getting a Kyneton women’s football team up and running … now it’s about getting that first win. The Tigers are yet to win a match in their first season in the west division of the Victorian Women’s Football League, but each week there’s been improvement. Coach Lisa Borg said the side was loving the challenge of learning the game, and playing together. Borg is the most experienced player, having played more than 150 games for Sunbury Lions. She also played for Kyneton up until under-16s level. “We are going OK at the moment, but we are still struggling for numbers a bit,” she said. “We have a core group each week keeping us going. “We have 18 players all up, but usually 14 playing each week. Only once have we had 18 players on the field,” she said. Borg is loving the challenge of coaching the new side, most of whom have never played footy before. “There has been no pressure. It is fantastic being coach … you can drill things into the players you want them to be doing. “I like teaching and I’m enjoying playing with them. Hopefully, the team will be around for a long time.” Borg says the scoreboard isn’t necessarily reflective of the games. “Every team has three on the bench and we have no one, so we don’t get a chance to rotate,” Borg said. “The first and third quarters, we play really well. The second and fourth, not so great.” She said some players had really taken to the game. “Skye Sinclair is from a rugby background, and she is starting to get better towards the end of the season. “Marnie Love has been an outstanding backman, while Kylie Munro has never played before … she’s another who has picked up the game really well.” Borg said the side is hoping to get a win before the year’s out. She said it is also looking for more players, even those who just want to come and see whether they like it for a couple of weeks. “We are improving, and we want to get a whole team on the ground every week. “To get that and to get a win would be a good finish to the season,” Borg said. But that elusive win wasn’t to be on Sunday. The Tigers lost to Sunbury Lions, 7-16 (58) - 0-0 (0). Tara Murray
