On diamond, BJ’s a big hit

(Damjan Janevski)

He’s been swinging a bat for only a few years, but Sunbury’s Brayden ‘‘BJ’’ McTigue (pictured) is fast making a name for himself on the softball diamond. The 15-year-old, who got his start in the local association, has been selected in Softball Victoria’s under-17 side for the national championships in Western Australia next January. BJ’s mother, Sharon Hall, says it’s been a quick rise through the ranks for the young pitcher, outfielder and third baseman. ‘‘He was playing a lot of football but got quite sick with glandular fever,’’ she said. ‘‘Every time he tried to go back out he would end up sick.’’ BJ tried his hand at softball and found life on the mound very much to his liking. ‘‘He absolutely loves it,’’ Ms Hall said. ‘‘And not only is he passionate about it, it turns out he’s got real talent.’’ Family and friends have been quick to support a crowdfunding campaign to help the Sunbury Downs student pay for his uniforms and the trip to Western Australia. With $1900 raised in 14 days, they are within reach of a $2500 target. To donate, visit www.gofundme.com/ zhpkgg. Matt Crossman

services. Compiled over three years, the national report says the need for more long-distance travel and higher occupational risks, including those associated with farming, are also factors in poor health. Country people are more likely to smoke daily (22 per cent, compared with 15 per cent in cities) and drink at risky levels (24 per cent, compared with 19 per cent). Adults living in outer regional areas are more likely to be overweight or obese (69.5 per cent) than people living in major cities (60.2 per cent). According to the report, the suicide rate is 66 per cent higher in the country than in major cities. Life expectancy in the country is 2.5 years less for men and 1.3 years less for women

Experts have called for increased funding of health programs in the wake of a major report that reveals regional residents are living shorter lives and are more likely to suffer preventable problems than city residents. Macedon Ranges residents are being urged to place greater focus on personal wellbeing and do more to combat risks associated with higher rates of heart disease, asthma, high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity. The Garvan Institute’s first rural health report shows people living in regional areas such as Gisborne and Kyneton are more likely to have low incomes (24 per cent) than major cities (17 per cent), increasing barriers to health

The Garvan Institute describes its mission as making “significant contributions to medical research”. Macedon Ranges Health chief executive Don Tidbury said the report highlighted the large disparity between regional and metropolitan areas, and the importance of good, local services. He said the Gisborne-based clinic, which recently opened a $5.8 million centre in Neal Street, was working on a plan to address issues such as mental health, dementia and obesity. An expanded men’s health program and new youth clinic will start soon.

Pokie losses eat at town spend By Matt Crossman Almost $20 million was pumped into poker machines in Sunbury last financial year. New Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation figures reveal losses on the town’s 230 machines increased $230,000 in 2014-15 to $18.1 million. A total $8.6 million was lost on the 103 machines in the Macedon Ranges, an increase of close to $300,000. Sunbury Community Health’s child, youth

and family services manager, Marcus Bosch, said while Sunbury losses paled in comparison to areas such as Brimbank and Broadmeadows, the human impact remained substantial. ‘‘Sunbury Community Health sees so much damage caused by poker machines,’’ he said. While pokies benefit clubs and lead to some employment, Mr Bosch said their presence was a net loss for the community. ‘‘It’s well established that the more poker machines in a particular district, the more spending money is reduced … which has a

A total of $1.7 million was lost by punters on the 38 machines at Sunbury Football Social Club, and $1.8 million was lost on Sunbury United Sporting Club’s 40 machines. In the Macedon Ranges, $1.4 million went into Kyneton Bowling Club’s 25 machines; close to $2 million was lost on the 28 pokies at Kyneton RSL; and almost $5.1 million went into 50 machines of Gisborne’s Victorian Tavern.

New footage aired on prime-time television showing what appears to be the mishandling of asbestos at a Bulla tip has prompted the EPA to further investigate the troubled site. The footage, aired on Channel 9’s A Current Affair program on July 24, appears to show a tractor using its front loader to compact bags filled with asbestos sheeting. It has sparked a fresh round of investigations by the EPA, which attended the BTQ Group-run tip twice in one week after the program was aired, to check that quarry operators were correctly disposing of asbestos. Last month, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal granted the company an eight-year extension to its licence to operate the site as a private tip, overturning a Hume council decision that gave operators until the end of next year. It’s one of just 16 quarries in Victoria where the EPA allows commercial and domestic asbestos to be dumped. EPA regional services executive director Damien Wells said the footage prompted checks for non-compliance issues, but none was found. He said the footage could not be used as evidence as it did not show whether the asbestos was later covered, which meets EPA rules. He said the EPA would continue to keep a close eye on the tip. Hume mayor Adem Atmaca said the footage raised concerns for people who work at the site, live nearby and commute past the site. Bulla resident Carmel Egan, a spokeswoman for residents fed up with the tip, said the residents would meet with council this week to discuss concerns.

JADE PISANI

1134318-LB19-14

When Jade Pisani sought the services of a ukulele teacher on Facebook, she never imagined how much the story of her life was about to change. The ukulele man would become her partner and set her on the road to writing. Ms Pisani had a chaotic upbringing, dragged around western Sydney with her mother who, when she wasn’t in jail, would add zeroes to the balances of bank books. It meant Ms Pisani was regularly changing schools, and surnames, with little sense of home or true identity. She was 10 when her mother died of a drug overdose. ‘‘My grandparents came and picked me up the next day, so I didn’t get to go to the funeral,’’ Ms Pisani, 40, says. ‘‘There really wasn’t any sort of closure. I had no counselling or anything.’’ Instead, she spent time in foster homes, where she was physically and emotionally abused. Storytelling became a way to cope. ‘‘I’d make up stories about a good family life and say, ‘You know, I’ve got a palomino at home’ just to sort of live in a pretend little world when really, at home, it was a different story.’’ Once she reached adulthood, she drifted. ‘‘I’d go from one relationship to the next and I’d move a lot as well,’’ Ms Pisani says. ‘‘I never really had a chance to take my photo albums out of the boxes.’’ Aged 35, Ms Pisani met her partner, Woodend poet Myron Lysenko, who as well as teaching her some tunes on the ukulele, opened her heart and mind to writing. ‘‘It’s only been the last few years that I’ve started writing about my thoughts and feelings,’’ she says. ‘‘It has really helped me to express myself and actually feel normal.’’ Today, Ms Pisani – who has two children, Kody, 19, and Zaidee, 4 – tries to write every day. Almost two years into a memoir project, she’s also had work published in 15 haiku journals this year. She says the memoir has been tremendously cathartic. ‘‘When I’m finished writing, I do feel really emotional but also relieved that it’s out,” she said. ‘‘ Sometimes as I’m writing I’ll remember something I thought I’d forgotten.’’

A Sunbury mother who completed an advanced diploma of building design as a mature-age student has won a statewide competition. Melinda Sanz, who is continuing her studies at Melbourne Polytechnic, was among the rising stars recognised during the Building Designers Association of Victoria’s recent awards night. She says the honour for drafting excellence by a student came as a nice surprise as she only entered the first stage of the competition at the last minute. The budding architect spent many years working in freight-forwarding before stepping out to chase her dream. ‘‘I’ve always been fascinated with buildings and design … I’m the type who reads all the house magazines,’’ Ms Sanz said. ‘‘But it wasn’t until my children got older that I decided it was something I would pursue.’’ Her advice for anyone feeling as though life has passed them by is simple: ‘‘It’s never too late.’’ ‘‘That’s the cliche, but it’s true,’’ she said. ‘‘If you really want it, you might have to give up some of the things you’re used to – like concert tickets and new clothes. But with part-time or online study and hard work, you can do it.’’

Authorities believe a $46 million upgrade at Malmsbury’s youth justice centre gives young offenders somewhere to lay the foundations of new lives, rather than somewhere just to serve their sentence. A new 45-bed unit – including three residential wings, education and recreation spaces, and offices – was opened by Families and Children Minister Jenny Mikakos last Wednesday. Ms Mikakos, who also pledged $1.2 million to keep Aboriginal people from entering the youth justice system, said the unit would focus on rehabilitating young people so they could be reintegrated into society. She said the goal of youth justice centres was to ‘‘get the best possible outcome’’ for the community. The new unit, for men aged 18-20 serving custodial sentences, will provide TAFE courses and health and lifestyle programs, including drug and alcohol treatment classes, and parenting sessions. ‘‘Preventing vulnerable youth from entering adult prisons and giving them a practical education will reduce the likelihood that kids will reoffend,’’ Ms Mikakos said. Macedon Ranges police Inspector Ryan Irwin said a focus on education was welcome. ‘‘Anything that helps people come out with skills and abilities that will help them avoid going back to prison is fantastic,’’ Inspector Irwin said.‘‘The young men who are going into that system are people who usually haven’t had a lot of opportunities, and opportunities are often what determines how successful or otherwise you are in life.’’ The unit, next to the existing centre, is expected to create up to 90 new jobs.

Pathway to survival By Ben Cameron VicRoads is investigating long-term safety upgrades along a strip of the Calder Freeway that a local cycling group has identified as needing a new bike path. The state government will establish a $100 million Safer Cyclists and Pedestrian fund dedicated to statewide cycling and walking facilities, including potential for shortor long-term improvements to the freeway between Kings and Thompsons roads. Bike Safe Macedon Ranges (BSMR) has lobbied for a safer path along the freeway linking St Albans with Diggers Rest. This proposal includes a three-metre-wide, 2.7-kilometre bike path on the northern side of the freeway, connecting Thompsons Road to the existing Kings Road bike path. The idea gathered momentum after a local cyclist was recently hit from behind by a car near the Calder Park Drive exit, suffering concussion and several broken bones. The bike path proposal, estimated to cost $750,000, is supported by the Brimbank Bicycle User Group, Road Safe Central and Calder Action Group. BSMR member Andrew Smeal, who rides along the freeway several times a week, has launched an online petition, so far signed by about 350 people, which calls on Roads and Road Safety Minister Luke Donnellan to fund the path. “I’m keen to get this built before there’s a fatality,” Mr Smeal said, adding that there was no safe route for Sunbury and Macedon Ranges residents to get to and from Melbourne by bike. There was also a high collision risk for cyclists crossing the Calder at Organ Pipes Road, he said. “The corridor used by commuter and

recreational cyclists involves a portion of the Calder Freeway between Organ Pipes Road and Kings Road,” he said. “[The road is] riddled with debris – retreads, broken glass and building materials. “VicRoads has seen fit to erect several signs on both sides of the freeway indicating cyclists should use the freeway shoulder. However, at

the Calder Park Drive exit, the shoulder ceases to exist. The space is instead used for a highspeed slip-lane. “For a very small investment, a path can be built on the north side of the freeway.” Mr Donnellan said recent VicRoads community workshops identified a potential route along the Sunbury rail corridor.

Solution to court waiting A Macedon Ranges councillor has suggested a kindergarten could be converted in order to ease waiting space problems at Kyneton Magistrates Court. Cr John Letchford said it was outrageous that people, including family violence victims, were forced to wait under trees or in their cars. He said the nearby Lady Brooks Kindergarten could be incorporated as part of a court precinct plan, with the kinder possibly shifted to a new site as part of the Kyneton Primary School redevelopment. ‘‘It makes good sense to have that in mind for the safety and wellbeing of vulnerable community members attending court,’’ Cr Letchford said. A notice of motion proposed by him was approved at last month’s council meeting. The council will write to Court Services Victoria to push for improvements to the court arrangements. Community lawyers and welfare groups have called for the historic bluestone court to be urgently upgraded, with family violence victims often forced to wait outside near perpetrators due to the lack of a waiting room. The public area of the courthouse has not been upgraded since it was built in the 1850s. Cr Letchford urged the state government to work with the council to achieve the best solution. Matt Crossman

Second wind for project

Cr Jack Ogilvie on sick leave

By Matt Crossman A community group behind plans for a stalled wind farm project near Woodend says the dream of a small-scale operation providing enough energy to power up to 4000 houses is edging closer to fruition. Woodend Integrated Sustainable Energy (WISE) group spokesman Barry Mann said members were talking with the state government as it works to amend legislation that would pave the way for three turbines in a pine plantation about six kilometres south of the town. He said the site had many attractive features including high wind speeds, good access and grid connectivity. Located deep in a forest managed by Hancock Victorian Plantations, the site also has few issues with native flora and fauna or visual amenity. The nearest house is more than 1.5 kilometres away. Mr Mann said the group and the Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group were buoyed by the support of the Labor government, including Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas, with a Liberal ban on new wind projects being overturned and money provided for a solar farm at a nearby timber mill. ‘‘We were literally days away from starting when the last government banned new projects,” Mr Mann said. “That was four years ago.’’ Aside from legislation, other challenges remain. WISE will need to collect about a year’s worth of data, which will then have to be analysed before financing and planning efforts can begin. If modelling is confirmed by measurement, the project will require a series of impact assessments and planning permits.

‘‘We are still looking at three to five years,’’ Mr Mann said. ‘‘But we’re a lot closer than we have been.’’ Help provided by those involved in a similar community-owned project near Daylesford has been invaluable. So, too, has the work of Embark Australia, a privately-funded, non-profit organisation that is providing information and legal and

engineering support to help groups such as WISE. Mr Mann said the appetite of governments, companies and the public for renewable energy was greater than it was four years ago. An engineering group had offered WISE $10,000 to put up wind masts in exchange for data from the turbines. ‘‘Everyone’s getting on board now,” he said.

Hume councillor Jack Ogilvie has been granted three months’ leave as he continues to recover from a serious stroke. As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, Cr Ogilvie was paralysed on one side after suffering a stroke on July 6. He was organising a community event when the stroke happened. Council chief executive Domenic Isola wished the former mayor a speedy recovery. ‘‘Cr Ogilvie remains in our thoughts as he recovers in hospital,’’ Mr Isola said. ‘‘We are thinking of him and his family, and wish them all the very best. We look forward to seeing him back in the chamber.’’ More than $11,000 in goods and services has been donated since a committee began planning a gala ball and auction for Cr Ogilvie, hoping to collect $100,000 for home modifications and equipment, including a motorised wheelchair. Committee spokesman Adam Mizzi said offers of items had flooded in. ‘‘To hear Jack [is] worried about how he was going to pay for a motorised wheelchair … it just broke my heart,’’ Mr Mizzi said. “He’s dedicated his whole life to the community.” Mr Mizzi said Cr Ogilvie appreciated the cards, letters and Facebook messages. The ball at Pitruzzello Estate is on October 17. Details: 9740 8999 or goo.gl/ uG2Xir Matt Crossman

Council ‘no’ to Sunbury slug By Matt Crossman Hume council has added its voice to the great number of views expressed to the auditors reviewing plans for an independent Sunbury. Councillors last week endorsed a submission, which confirmed Hume’s opposition to plans for a Melbourne Airport cross-subsidy, and staked its claim for a share of money received for the sale of land in Racecourse Road. It also reiterated the council’s wish that there ‘‘be no disadvantage to the Hume community, staff, businesses and stakeholders’’, and called for greater clarity about the allocation of assets and liabilities if the separation is to proceed. Submissions to transition auditors Frank Vincent and John Watson closed last Wednesday. A spokeswoman for the auditors said the council’s submission was among almost 100 received by the closing date. The council’s submission said that while it had maintained a neutral position, the previous state government’s adoption of panel recommendations, and its subsequent creation of a new Sunbury council, left it no choice but to express concerns about the process and the impact of the split on the Hume community. New auditors were appointed by the Labor government in March with a brief to review the separation after the former Liberal government gazetted papers to start a new Sunbury council on July 1 this year. ‘‘The order-in-council is written in a general sense and provides little direction and inappropriate recommendations,’’ the council’s submission said, referring to the

timing of audits, staffing arrangements and airport payments. It also complained that preparation costs were not acknowledged, nor was the financial ramifications of changing administrative systems and licensing. ‘‘The panel also recommended that the airport rates in lieu are to be shared with Sunbury,” it said, questioning why one council was expected to fund and subsidise another. The submission said more than $12 million from proceeds of the sale of land in Racecourse Road would be used at Sunbury in 2015-16.

‘‘

The Sunbury project has been divisive … delays have - Hume council had impacts

’’

‘‘Given this has occurred prior to the establishment of a new Sunbury council, the total amount allocated to Sunbury should be amended to reflect this [if the split proceeds].’’ The auditors, who last month held a public information evening at Sunbury, have promised to report and make recommendations to Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins by August 31. The council urged the government to make a final decision as soon as possible. ‘‘For more than three-and-a-half years, council has operated in a period of speculation and uncertainty. ‘‘The Sunbury project has been divisive, and the delays have had impacts for our community and council staff.’’

Hydro hits the hotspots Western Water has added a hydro vehicle to its fleet to speed up sewer and water maintenance and enhance its emergency response capability. The $300,000 vehicle – which acts as a large vacuum cleaner, removing dirt, water and waste – is expected to allow the authority’s work teams to quickly access any source of problems. Commissioned last month, the vehicle uses technology that was previously reserved for extremely large water bursts as part of a contracted service. ‘‘It will also reduce the likelihood of our crews having to dig up large sections of nature strips to repair bursts,’’ customer and community relations general manager Graham Holt said.

The vehicle will also improve safety for staff, removing the need for some manual handling tasks. Mr Holt said the truck came much cheaper than the $560,000 estimated cost of clean-ups using contracted vehicles. “To rent this type of equipment costs at least $1000 per callout, and the safety improvements for our staff are even more important than the cost savings.” Last month, Star Weekly reported that incorrect disposal of nappies, wipes and other items was causing blockages that cost Western Water more than $150,000 a year to remove. Our hands do so much for us. They are a very functional part of our body that we use to touch, grasp, manipulate, feel, hold and much more, so why is it when a part of a hand or finger gets injured, so many people tend to ignore it? One thing I commonly hear as a hand therapist from people is “it’s just a finger, I thought it would just get better!”. What we all need to remember is that hands are very complex structures. A human hand is made up from 27 bones, has over 100 ligaments, a very complex system of tendons and muscles, plus nerves and blood vessels that work together to enable us to complete our activities of daily living. When any of these structures are disrupted due to injury or disease, these activities of daily living can become increasingly difficult all because that finger you never got looked at now can’t bend down to make that fist, or straighten fully so you catch it on your pocket every time you go to get your keys out, or you can no longer do up the buttons on your shirt because your joints are so stiff they can’t manipulate the buttons properly. Many of the most common conditions that occur in hands and wrists are very treatable or can be managed with the right care. So if you are experiencing weakness, pain, or altered sensation in you hands, wrists, or have bent your finger backwards or sideways while playing sport or even while making a bed, make sure you seek advice on it’s appropriate management. Don’t wait until things get too hard! At Sunbury Physiotherapy and Paramedical Centre, our hand therapist can offer advice and treatment/ managment plans for people with hand, wrist and finger injuries or conditions and can custom make splints/orthotics to suit your needs and assist in aiding your recovery or managing your condition.

and reported on. The digital images are then transferred to the referring doctor, who may wish to discuss them with the radiologist before talking to the patient,” Dr French said.

Advanced technologies, such as MRI, CT, PET, ultrasounds and nuclear medicine, give professionals extraordinary insights into the workings of the whole body, including the brain, lungs, arteries, vital organs and skeletal structures.

As a full-time radiologist at Lake Imaging, Dr French is proud of the clinic and its role in his hometown of Sunbury.

Keeping abreast of rapid advancements in technology, Lake Imaging understands the importance of maintaining a close partnership between the referring doctor and the radiologist. As a member of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists, and with more than 15 years’ study, Dr French has the experience and skill to provide information to medical specialists, fellow doctors and colleagues. “Little of this behind-the-scenes teamwork between medical professionals is seen by patients, who are usually more concerned about getting quick appointments and results back in a short time,” Dr French said. “Speed and user-friendly radiology tend to disguise the extent of the behind-the-scenes work involved. For example, a CT machine takes thousands of pictures a minute and each must be carefully examined

Three bedrooms include the main with walk-through and built-in wardrobes and an en suite with bath. Living areas are a spacious lounge room with fireplace and floorboards, a meals area and a separate rumpus room with access to an outdoor spa under cover. The kitchen has plenty of blackwood cupboards (including one for spices), a dishwasher, double oven and cooktop. An undercover barbecue area caters for year-round entertainment and, along with an integrated double garage, there’s a double garage/workshop with power and concrete floor. Gas ducted heating and a split-system are other perks.

Real Estate Today A House Needs to Speak to You Whether you call it street appeal, curbside attractions or anything else an undeniable fact is that, no matter whether you are selling or renting first impressions count. Presenting the property from the outside is critical. A house needs to speak to you; it needs to invite you in. Simple but sound advice at any time, in any market. The more negatives you can eliminate the easier the decision will be for a buyer or a renter to make. Some suggestions improve what might be a shabby appearance include: •Tidy up the garden and grounds. Plant some annual flowers that will be in bloom at the right time. •If repainting is necessary use colours that are current and popular, unless a particular period style (e.g. a federation house) requires a period paint style.

In a quiet court just minutes from the heart of town, this modern charmer on about 755 square metres is beautifully presented and has a neutral colour palette with broad appeal. The kitchen is a standout that comes with lovely grey-scale cabinetry, an island bench under pendant lights, white splashback tiles and 900-millimetre gas cooker. The living area (with floorboards) comprises sitting, meals and rumpus zones. A carpeted lounge room near the front door links with this hub. Four bedrooms include a main with walk-in wardrobe and sleek en suite. The main bathroom is equally smart. An elevated, covered deck looks out to a good-sized backyard. A fenced-off corner has a stand of silver birches under which to sit and soak up the peace. Other features include gas central heating, split-system, single carport and lock-up garage.

Sometimes the kerbside view of a house provides a “high-standards alert” – and this is one of them. In this case, there’s a tryptich of huge picture windows facing the street, a design feature from Bendigo outfit Macquarie Homes, who built this great house about five years ago – although it looks more like five minutes ago, going by presentation and decor throughout. The floor plan has a generosity of space and flexibility and thoughtful room placement to facilitate family interaction and separation as needed. Entry is into a wide hallway where inset mosaic floor tiles kick off a motif woven

Private sale throughout. On the right, the main bedroom has walk-through twin wardrobes and a large en suite with raised, square vanity basins. Opposite is an open, tiled study with access to the remote-controlled triple garage (with extra workshop space). Next comes a large living hub that includes an inset carpeted area defining the sitting zone – an ideal remedy for rug slippage. The kitchen in here is massive, all-white and perfectly formed for the pell-mell of family meal preparation and baking days. A window splashback admits natural light, the walk-in pantry is big, drawers are everywhere, the island

bench is topped with stone-look laminate, a Miele dishwasher is concealed and the 900-millimetre underbench oven is self-cleaning. A wide entry then ushers in the “children’s wing”, starting with a skylit rumpus room preceding three bedrooms – two with walk-in wardrobes and one with built-in and a study desk. Also in this rear “wing” are a laundry with a stack of storage (including a drying cupboard), a powder room, walk-in storage room and the good-sized main bathroom. The living hub opens to a covered deck where distant postcard views of the town

emphasise the property’s seclusion. The large yard on this side (on a block of about 1486 square metres) has side gates for boat/caravan admission. The opposite side yard has another set of gates to an area behind a timber retaining wall. This huge pebbled area lends itself to all kinds of future plans (pool, shed, dream garden) – right now it has two timber vegie boxes. A C-bus system and gas ducted heating are other keynotes of this top-notch property. Carole Levy 15 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 4, 2015

ceiling in the lounge room, original chandelier, high ceilings, deep skirting boards, original cornices and sash windows. With shedding to win the heart of the serious engineer, tradesperson or restorer of cars, concrete flooring, 3 Phase Power and room to store up to 10 cars. A colour bond two car plus secure workshop/storage is also available and is situated close to the house for ease of access. Be a part of “living history” and become the third owner of a wonderful, character filled home. Inspection strictly by appointment only.

In an economy where many people find themselves employed on a contract or on a casual basis buying their own home is difficult. Interest rates may be very low but the banks have tightened their purse strings making it difficult to borrow money to buy the family home, therefore the demand for rental properties grows and grows. Employing the services of a professional experienced Property Manager takes much of the stress out of being a Landlord. What does a Good Property Manager do? •

SPORT Sunbury Jets deliver on a grand pre-season pact The Sunbury Jets have grabbed a spot in the Big V youth league 2 women’s grand final. On Saturday night the club’s pre-season vow became a reality as the Jets accounted for Southern Peninsula 85-59. Following a loss to the Sharks the previous week, Jets coach Andrew Seidel spoke about getting nerves out of the way early. The Jets did so, but even they were surprised with just how well they started. The Sharks put up just nine field-goal attempts for the quarter and managed just six points. Seidel said he felt the team had got its defence

right in the four-point loss the previous weeks but simply couldn’t score. “We played with the same defence this week and were able to hit our shots to put them under pressure,” he said. The massive first quarter boosted the Jets’ confidence and led to an 18-point half-time lead. The Sharks showed they weren’t going away without a fight by winning the third quarter 23-19. “We dropped off a bit as there were a few more rotations in the third quarter to give everyone some court time,” Seidel said.

All but one player got on the court and all of those who played got on the scoresheet. Alex Darby, who has been one of the best players in the competition this season, topscored with 18 points in just 21 minutes. “She’s improving every week,” Seidel said. He said he didn’t think the win and the reality of a grand final berth had sunk in after the game. A grand final spot is a long way from finishing 12th in youth league division 1 last year. “We made a pact that we wanted to make the grand final,” Seidel said. “We’ve achieved that and hopefully we can go one step further.

“The youth league program is in a good position and there’s been a hell of a lot of improvement in the last 12 to 18 months.” The Jets will face Camberwell in the grand final. Camberwell will host the match after beating Chelsea 60-47. The Dragons hold a 2-1 record over the Jets this season, winning both games on their home court. But the Jets won 56-49 the last time they played in Sunbury. Tara Murray

United slips to relegation zone

Luke Beattie will coach Kyneton for the rest of the season. (Shawn Smits)

Tough start for coach By Tara Murray After a big week off-field, Kyneton was happy to finally get onto the paddock in the Bendigo Football League on Saturday. The club announced on Tuesday it had parted ways with coach Mark Adamson, with Luke Beattie appointed to coach the club for the rest of the season. Tigers president Rob Waters told Star Weekly Adamson’s failure to attend a training session had left the club with no option but to act. Adamson had already made the decision to stand down at the end of the season. For Beattie his first task wasn’t an easy one, taking on unbeaten ladder leaders Strathfieldsaye. “It was good to get back to the footy,” Beattie said on Sunday. “Things happened during the week which were completely out of the playing group’s control. “The boys responded well, especially in

the first half. They’re a very united group and know that no individual is bigger than the club.” But Beattie said lapses in concentration cost the Tigers in the 22.20 (152) - 11.3 (69) loss. “The boys failed to maintain pressure for greater portions in the game,” Beattie said. “In the first half the lapses were only for one or two minutes. They expanded to five or six minutes in the second half, when the Storm put on genuine pressure.” Despite the loss, the Tigers remain fifth on the ladder. “Certainly, our aim is to still make the finals,” Beattie said. “Our destiny is in our own hands.” Beattie, who didn’t play at the weekend, said he didn’t plan to change too much. Beattie, a Tigers premiership player, has coached Daylesford and was assistant coach in Sunbury Lions’ 2012 premiership. “There are certainly a few things that anyone taking on a coaching role would sit back and

assess,” Beattie said. “Part of the reason I didn’t play this weekend was to be able to watch them properly. “We’ll develop and work on what we need to do in the next two weeks. Where possible, status quo will remain.” Waters said Adamson, who had been coach since the club re-entered the competition in 2014, would always be welcome at the club. “His tireless work in getting a senior side back on the park will never be forgotten,” he said. “His efforts to recruit the 2014 and 2015 teams can’t be underestimated. “He played a very large part in reinvigorating this club and we wish him all the best for the future.” The Tigers have a bye this weekend. Gisborne still sits a game behind the Tigers after losing another close one. The Bulldogs led at half-time but kicked only one goal in the third quarter to give up the lead and lose, 13.12 (90) - 12.7 (79).

Sunbury United’s quest to avoid relegation hit a major hurdle with a loss to bottom-of-the-ladder Corio in FFV state league 1 north-west on Saturday. With the bottom two sides to be relegated, United went into the round in 10th place, only goal difference ahead of Westgate but six points ahead of Corio. But the 2-0 loss to Corio and Westgate’s 5-0 win over Cairnlea means United is now 11th and in the relegation zone. United coach Greg Czapnik said before the game that the Corio game was the most important of the year. “Every game is like a six-point game,” he said. “It’s so tight down the bottom of the ladder.” Most frustratingly for Czapnik is his side’s inability to convert its chances in so many games. He said there were at least six or seven matches in which Sunbury lost after dominating the game. This was most recently on show in United’s 1-0 loss to Sydenham Park two weeks ago. “It was laughable and it’s a game which got away,” Czapnik said. “We missed at least eight clear-cut chances . . . we should have been 6-0 up at half-time. “They got a gift of a goal through a goalkeeping error, which was hard to take. If it was another team they would have scored a bagful.” Czapnik said his side needs to keep creating chances. “There isn’t much more I can ask for from the boys,” he said. “Eventually something will turn and I pity the side we’re playing when it does. “Our defence has been solid the last few weeks. “You can only put it down to confidence. “We analyse games afterwards and you don’t sleep on a Saturday night; you think about what you can do better.” One thing in United’s favour is they have two games in hand over Westgate. “Our fate is in our control,” he said. In state league 5 west, Kyneton District defeated Sporting Carlton 4-3. Ryan Cole scored two goals for the Rangers, with Shaun Dukic and Daniel Reeves each scoring once. Gisborne lost 2-0 to Melbourne Lions. The Rangers are fifth on the ladder and Gisborne remains seventh. Tara Murray

Slow start undoes Roos By Tara Murray Broadford’s finals hopes have hit a bump in the road with Riddell ensuring the Kangaroos remain outside the Riddell District Football League top six for at least another week. Looking to be the first team to break into the top six since round six, the Kangaroos were left to rue a goalless first quarter. The Bombers led by 24 points at quarter-time and were able to maintain a buffer all day. The 12.12 (84) - 10.10 (70) loss means the Kangaroos are again a game and percentage outside the top six. Bombers Ricky Elliott was best on ground, with Ben Peters and Brian Ruffell also playing well. James Nolan kicked four goals. For the Kangaroos, Grant Wearne was named the best player. Brodie Holland, Russell Robertson and Ibrahim Atik kicked two goals each. The result means that if the Kangaroos make finals, they will do so by not winning a game against a top six side. They are a game and percentage behind Macedon and the Sunbury Kangaroos. Macedon ensured it remained in fifth spot with a 10-goal win over Kilmore. The Cats set the tone early with six goals to none in the first quarter before going on to win 18.9 (117) - 8.6 (54). Jason Cooke kicked five goals for the Cats in a best-on-ground performance. For the second time this season, WoodendHesket won consecutive games holding on against the Melton Centrals for a 14.10 (94) 12.7 (79). Finals-bound Romsey and Diggers Rest had massive wins over Wallan and Rockbank, while Lancefield, Sunbury Kangaroos and Rupertswood had byes.

Riddell puts faith in coach There’s a lot riding on the partnership of Heath Wadden and Riddell Cricket Club, and that’s why the premiership-winning coach is taking on the role again. Last season, Riddell was knocked out in the first round of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup finals, after being on top of the ladder for most of the season. That left Wadden and his players with a bitter taste in their mouths. The club had won the 2013-14 McIntyre grand final. “I drew the lucky straw to coach again,” Wadden joked. “There’s a bit of unfinished business after last year. “We thought we under-achieved after finishing second on the ladder before being knocked straight out. “It was an easy decision to coach again,” he said. Anticipating a close season, Wadden has looked to boost batting ranks. Hayden Ross moves across from Rupertswood, Matt Darby returns after a year off for a knee reconstruction, and Cameron Clayton is also returning. Riddell is one of only a few clubs sticking with their coach. In the McIntyre Cup, Sunbury, Woodend, Sunbury United, Gisborne and Diggers Rest Bulla are likely to have new faces on the coach’s bench. Another club to reappoint its incumbent is Romsey, which keeps star all-rounder Chris Burkett. Tara Murray

Second on table, but Redbacks’ form worries coach Romsey has what it takes to go back to back in the Riddell District Football League. That’s the view of coach Dean Helmers. But he adds that his players really have to commit if they want that second successive flag. Although the Redbacks sit second on the ladder, only percentage behind Rupertswood and with only two losses all season, their recent form has Helmers worried. “We were hammered by Riddell and were a bit better against Macedon,” he said last week. “It wasn’t something the club expected, but I’d been warning it was coming. Our training has been very worrying.” Helmers said a lack of numbers at training was the biggest issue. “There’s been hardly anyone on the track,” he said. “We’ve been getting six to eight guys each night and good sides will overtake us because of this. It’s shown in how we’ve played the last four weeks.

“We weren’t great against Wallan and Lancefield and lost to Riddell. “There were a few home truths said after the Riddell game.” Helmers said several senior players had been out of the side because of injury, but that wasn’t an excuse. “They’ll all be back for finals. You don’t have excuses,” he said. “I’d have liked to have already started a charge to the finals, but we’re a month behind where we wanted to be.” Helmers said that despite the lack of numbers at training, the feeling around the club was good. “There was a lot of pressure on the boys last year [to go through unbeaten and win the premiership]. There’s a much better feeling this year. They’re enjoying the football a bit more.” Helmers is still aiming to finish on top of the ladder, even with matches against

Rupertswood and Sunbury Kangaroos to come on the run home. “Rupertswood and Riddell are the two in-form teams of the competitions,” he said. “The Kangaroos have a list that could win a premiership but haven’t been playing well. “It would be ideal to finish top two and our aim is to finish top, but that will depend on attitude. “If we drop one or two games we could finish fourth.” On Saturday, the Redbacks were too strong for Rockbank – 21.13 (139) - 5.10 (40). The Redbacks flew out of the blocks and led by 51 points at the main break. They didn’t let up in the second half, keeping the Rams goalless. Ben Way kicked six for the Redbacks and Zak Saad was adjudged best on ground. Tara Murray

Cats claw way back in By Tara Murray Macedon is hoping to put six weeks of mixed results behind it in the run home to the Riddell District Netball League finals. Going into round 10, the Cats were unbeaten and in the top two on the ladder. Since then, they’ve lost three matches, had a game washed out and changed coaches. Despite an up and down month, the Cats are confident of being a force to reckon with come finals time. Karri Ambler, who has taken on a co-coaching role, said the attitude at the club had been really positive. Ambler and Kelly Nicholas took on the coaching after the club decided to part ways with Melissa Climas at the end of round 10 after a serious code violation. “It’s pretty much the same girls still playing,” Ambler said. “Kelly and I have been around the club for a long time and both played at the club before having kids. “Everything is going well, and the girls are really happy.” On Saturday, the Cats defeated Kilmore, 52-32, without a couple of their starting seven, including shooter Bec Colwell. The win is the second for the new coaching combination after a win against Sunbury Kangaroos in round 13. Ambler said the massive loss to Rupertswood in round 11 was a blimp on the radar and a match from which they would take little away. “When we played Rupertswood, we were missing 14 players, with injuries and girls away.” Ambler said Tarryn Mackie, who hurt her knee in the Rupertswood game, would return after the bye. “She and Kate [McLeod] form a really good combination in defence.” Genaya Burke will fill the goal attack role for the rest of the season, taking the spot left vacant when Alexis Climas decided to leave the club. “Genaya is from Gisborne originally and has played a lot of netball locally in Sunbury. She’s really fit and plays good netball.” The Cats’ aim is still a top-three finish. “We definitely want to finish in the best position we can … we’ll still be trying for a top two finish,” Ambler said. Elsewhere, matches went as expected. Diggers Rest kept up the pressure on the top six with a 71-46 win over Wallan; Melton Centrals was too good for Woodend-Hesket, 66-19; and Romsey defeated Rockbank 66-24. This weekend brings a top-of-the-table clash between Riddell and Rupertswood.

Cannons boom as wins flow Calder Cannons are finally finding consistency and confidence as they head towards another finals series. They have now won three in a row in a season which got off to a slow start. On Saturday, they travelled north and held off a determined Bendigo Pioneers, 14.11 (95) - 10.8 (68). Cannons coach Andrew Johnston said the boys were starting to gain confidence from results going their way. “With a new coach and game plan it’s taken a while to instil,” he said. “We’ve been trying to improve each week and we’ve done that over the last three to four weeks. It’s been a slow improvement and the boys are now getting reward for effort.” Against the Pioneers, it was secondhalf pressure that wore down the opposition. “It was a hard-fought win,” Johnston said, “but we were able to sustain the pressure for longer and convert up forward. We went in tall, and Moore and Brown were really good focal points for us.” Karl Brown and Callum Moore were best on ground, with Brown kicking six goals and Moore chipping in with three. Until three weeks ago, the duo hadn’t played together for the Cannons this year. But in those three games, both have been named twice among the best players. “Callum was injured, then Karl was injured and then Callum played Vic Metro,” Johnston said. “Having them both there at the same time gives us real focal points.” Johnston also threw challenges to others. “Tom Wallis was playing VFL and Zak Wunhym school footy, so there was the opportunity to try other players on the ball,” he said. “Jackson McDonald got his opportunity as did Matthew Stillman, who has been great down the back. “Hisham Kerbatieh has been working hard on his defence and workrate so got a run on the ball. ” Nick O’Kearney is set to be the next Cannons player to get a chance at VFL level this week; he’s likely to be named Coburg’s 23rd player. The Cannons have the bye this weekend, and Johnston says most of the players will get the week off and not go back to their local clubs. Northern Knights lost 12.10 (82) 10.13 (73) against Oakleigh Chargers on Sunday. Tara Murra Murray 33 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 4, 2015

MOTOR Sexy ‘Lexie’ is a brute with style The Lexus RC F is a versatile car that can play the role of both beauty and beast. The two-door coupe’s sweeping lines and interior styling are aesthetically pleasing although quite brutish from some angles. Then there’s its grunt. As I put my foot down for the first time, the acceleration pinned me to my seat and within two seconds I inadvertently exceeded the speed limit. That sensation was matched by the epic sound of the normally-aspirated 5.0-litre V8 opening up through a second pipe like the Archangel Gabriel on trombone accompanied by a dragon. A massive smile on my face, I put it into cruise control, totally aware that if I wasn’t careful I’d be asking my boss for a character reference. Doing 110km/h on country freeways is a mere canter for this car, which has a top speed of 270km/h and does 0-100km in 4.4 seconds. The faster you go the more the 19-inch wheels feel like they’re sticking to the road, thanks to the handling and brake assist systems. Huge Bembo brakes stop this thing as rapidly as it accelerates. The RC F (F being Lexus’ performance brand) has four driving modes: normal, sport, sport + and eco. The difference between normal and sport is palpable. The revs are higher at lower speed, so you can turn heads at shopping centres. Sport + takes things up another notch and also has different handling characteristics, which you can set yourself.

LEXUS RC F

Eco mode … yeah, whatever. The eight-speed automatic transmission is silky smooth and usually changes up or down when you want it to. There’s a manual mode with steering wheel paddles, but like most cars I didn’t find it instinctive like a true manual, so I generally left it in automatic. Lexus claims the RC F does 10.4 litres per 100km combined, but I didn’t exactly drive in an economical manner so I can’t vouch for that. Being a Lexus, there’s no shortage of safety features and creature comforts. The look and feel of the interior is designed to

create “a sports-oriented driving experience”, but it’s still incredibly comfortable with high-back leather seats that almost cocoon you. My girlfriend, who doesn’t share my automobile obsession, said it was the most comfortable she’d ever been in a car, so much so she knitted a baby hat on a drive to Castlemaine. A digital display shows analogue-style gauges that change depending on what driving mode you’re in. There’s also a small driver information screen displaying everything from what song is playing to G-forces on bends. A 7-inch screen displays the usual media,

phone, sat nav, climate control and systems info. It’s out of arm’s reach so is controlled by a laptop-style finger pad, which is pretty instinctive once you get used to it. Music is via an excellent 17-speaker Mark Levinson sound system. Safety features include active cruise control, pre-collision safety system, blind-spot detection and lane departure warning. This Lexus more than matches its European counterparts, such as the BMW m4, and its $133,500 price tag (before on-roads) is substantially lower.
