Mount in bloom Rare plants and hard-to-find gardening books will be on sale during a major garden lovers’ fair at one of Mount Macedon’s most famous estates later this month. As many as 1000 people are expected to attend Mount Macedon Horticultural Society’s huge annual event at heritage-listed Bolobek on September 19 and 20. Gardening experts, including Stephen Ryan, Simon Rickard and Carolyn Blackman, will share their wisdom and insights during a series of gardening Q & A sessions. First held in 2002, the former plant lovers’ market has been expanded to include children’s activities, local wines, homemade food and coffee. Bolobek’s Brigid Robertson says more than 30 stalls will be at this year’s event. ‘‘People will also be able to wander through the property, which includes about 2.5 hectares of garden and 2.5 hectares of parkland,’’ she says. ‘‘We’re making it a real day out. ‘And spring has definitely sprung. The camellias are coming out and things are really greening up; it’s beginning to lose that grey.’’ Bolobek is at 370 Mount Macedon Road, Macedon. Entry: $10; children free. Crop house warning Landlords are being encouraged to check carefully before entering into private tenancy arrangements after a series of drug raids on rented houses in Sunbury. Raids on properties in Phillip Drive, Glastonbury Drive and Langport Crescent have turned up 486 cannabis plants since July. The most recent warrant was executed at a Langport Crescent house on August 26 when 219 cannabis plants were seized. Police and real estate agents warned that many people involved in cannabis or crystal

methamphetamine production and trafficking were circumventing reference checks by providing false names or using the private market. Hume police’s Inspector Lisa Hardeman said landlords risked significant damage to their investments, with walls in crop houses often removed and electricity tampered with. ‘‘It’s really important, if you are renting a house out, that you do really good background checks or go through an agency that will do all those checks for you,’’ she said. ‘‘These people are in a business. They will sign up under different names or use false identification.’’

A Sunbury real estate agent, who did not want to be named, said he had recently been contacted by a landlord who had been shafted by tenants who found him online. ‘‘They paid the bond and the first month’s rent, but he received nothing after that. He decided to list it with us, but when we went around to inspect it he opened the door and literally every wall had been removed. Chains had been installed on the ceiling for fluorescent lights. The place was an absolute mess.’’ Another Sunbury agent, also unwilling to be named, said tenants involved in drug trafficking

or production often appeared legitimate, paying their rent months in advance. ‘‘People have got to be really careful,’’ the agent said. ‘‘They may say they’re wanting a house for a Mr and Mrs with a couple of kids, but then they drag in someone else to sit on a crop for them.’’ Both agents said crooks were often targeting houses in newer estates. Inspector Hardeman urged neighbours who noticed suspicious behaviour to contact police. Tell-tale signs of crop houses include windows blacked out, blinds permanently down and increased daytime foot and car traffic.

Fire season tipped to start early By Matt Crossman Authorities have warned Sunbury and Macedon Ranges landholders there’s no room for complacency ahead of what’s expected to be another dangerous fire season. Modelling released last week by the Bushfire and Natural Hazards Co-operative Research Centre reveals large areas of southern Australia, especially central Victoria, face an aboveaverage potential for bushfires this season. A long, hot, dry summer has been predicted due to a strengthening El Nino weather

pattern. Emergency Management Victoria commissioner Craig Lapsley said the forecast predicted the fire season could start earlier than usual. ‘‘This is an early warning to carry out fire prevention works in October and November,’’ he said. ‘‘Preparing early will be critical as it’s likely the season will be upon us from December and through to February.’’ Mike Dornau, spokesman for the Mountain group of CFA brigades, covering Mount Macedon, Macedon, Gisborne, Newham and Riddells Creek, said 10 years of low rainfall

‘‘

’’

meant forests and land were extremely dry. ‘‘We were out testing the other day … you start digging and you’ve only got a couple of millimetres before there’s no moisture.” He warned landholders of the dangers of having a false sense of security. ‘‘You’ve got a lot of people who are diligent

and they clean up their land every year,’’ Mr Dornau said. ‘‘Then there’s the other end, where you’ve got people who will never clean up, but in the middle you’ve got those who can get complacent. ‘‘Put yourself six months forward. You’d hate to be saying that, maybe if I had cleaned up my house would have been saved.’’ Emergency management agencies will take part in 17 pre-season briefings in September and October. Almost 50 aircraft will support firefighting efforts across the state this summer.

Pitch for icon’s revival gains traction home of Sunbury’s 19th century asylum for people deemed to be ‘mentally impaired’. Parts of the site, vacated by VU in 2011, are already used by community groups, including radio station 3NRG and Boilerhouse Theatre Company. Alliance member Alison Cunningham said the group wants to preserve the unique buildings while providing much-needed youth facilities and attracting visitors to town. ‘‘Whatever goes up there will have to pay for itself and for the restoration of the site as well,’’

she said. ‘‘There’s a lot of potential for things like a multiversity, training restaurant and living museums. There’s not a lot of places like this left … it has some very unique features.’’ Ms Cunningham said the group hoped to secure government support before seeking grants and philanthropic funds to buy the site. Mr Bull also visited Sunbury Community Health with Health Minister Jill Hennessy to discuss funds for new public dental equipment. Matt Crossman

A group that hopes to turn Sunbury’s former Victoria University campus into a thriving community hub has been buoyed by talks with state MPs. Skills and Training Minister Steve Herbert and Sunbury MP Josh Bull toured the historic Jacksons Hill precinct with members of the Sunbury Asylum Alliance last Friday. They discussed the group’s plans to attract jobs training, youth programs and artists, to offer accommodation and tours and bring new businesses to the site, which was the historic

New titles for 14 residential lots in Sunbury’s Canterbury Estate are set to be released after developers won an appeal against a Hume council decision to reject the estate’s landscaping plans. Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) member Geoffrey Code found the council’s reasons for refusing a statement of compliance for plans – part of the 24th stage of the Riddell Road estate – were not valid. The council argued that landscaping shown in the plans had not commenced to its satisfaction, with some works carried out before they were approved. The council also claimed that some of the works were tokenistic. Evidence from the developer showed that landscaping, including construction of a $2 million lake, began in the first of three areas in 2005 and was substantially completed in 2012. ‘‘The landscaping, substantially completed in the first area, may have been completed some time ago, but cannot … be regarded as tokenistic,’’ Mr Code said. ‘‘I find the landscaping in the plans has commenced. ‘‘It is a misconstruction of condition 10c that the council could only be satisfied of commencement if all the landscaping was completed or if an agreement to secure completion of those works was entered into.’’ A VCAT hearing about Macedon Ranges council’s decision to refuse a permit for a controversial Coles Express service station at Woodend is expected to begin this Friday.

A petition urging the state government to hold a compulsory vote on whether Sunbury should separate from Hume was tabled in State Parliament last week. Sunbury MP Josh Bull presented almost 7000 signatures, with petitioners citing ‘‘vastly different circumstances’’ from when a voluntary poll was held in 2013 and the proposed Sunbury council as it stands now. ‘‘The adverse consequences … are significant and have not been communicated to the residents,’’ the petition said.

All-in assault on ice use The Macedon Ranges are not immune to the effects of substance addiction, the area’s top cop has warned ahead of a forum that will develop a local strategy to combat crystal methamphetamine [ice] use. While an ongoing regional operation has resulted in large numbers of arrests and drug seizures at Sunbury and Romsey, Inspector Ryan Irwin said the scourge of ice was not something that could be addressed by enforcement alone. ‘‘It’s a community issue and it needs a whole-of-community approach to mitigate the impact,’’ he said.

Friday’s forum, at Woodend’s Norma Richardson Hall from 9am-1.30pm, is the latest in a series organised by the Macedon Ranges Local Safety Committee. While previous events have focused on raising awareness with clubs, community groups and health professionals, the next symposium will lay the foundations for a plan to tackle ice use. To book, phone 5428 2640. A separate information session organised by the Lancefield and Romsey community banks will be held at Romsey Park, 7pm next Tuesday. Matt Crossman

Basic instincts add to road toll A senior Macedon Ranges police officer says motorists should resist the instinct to swerve if they see animals on the road ahead. Traffic management unit officer-in-charge Geoff Neil said emergency services were often called to crashes, some of them fatal, caused by drivers trying to avoid wildlife. Sergeant Neil said Gisborne-Bacchus Marsh Road, Romsey Road and Kilmore Road near Riddells Creek were among hotspots where mobs of kangaroos were often seen feeding. ‘‘One of the obvious responses is to drive a little bit slower,’’ Sergeant Neil said. ‘‘The other one, and it’s the hardest one, is don’t really try to avoid them. ‘‘If they’re sitting in front of you, you are better off going straight ahead. “People have swerved to miss an animal and they’ve gone off in the trees.’’ Sergeant Neil warned crashes involving wildlife were more frequent in the lead-up to summer. ‘‘One can certainly become upset at the wanton destruction of wildlife, but we can’t throw human life away just through reaction.’’ He said the number of crashes reported to police were just a fraction of those that occurred. New data reveals that Sunbury (third) and Gisborne (sixth) were among the state’s top 10 postcodes for insurance claims for collisions with animals in 2014.

Data released by RACV shows 41 claims were made in Sunbury, down from 50 the previous year. A total of 37 claims were made in Gisborne, up from 18 in 2013. An overwhelming majority of claims involved kangaroos.

Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network figures show volunteers attended to 1292 kangaroos in 2014, many of them having been hit on the roads. The figure was up from 1064 in 2013. Spokeswoman Fiona Corke said the network, which is seeking a meeting with ministers, wanted the state government to conduct a Transport Accident Commissionstyle campaign to encourage people to drive to conditions and avoid hitting animals on country roads. She said driver education about wildlife was almost non-existent. ‘‘VicRoads has a responsibility to teach people how to drive on our roads, and that includes teaching them how to drive with wildlife,’’ Ms Corke said. ‘‘There are families being ripped apart.’’ A government spokesman said a meeting had yet to be scheduled.

KRISTIE MURDEN WITH GUS

Thumbs up for mum Riddells Creek’s Kristie Murden says giving up her daily latte was a small price to pay to help people with autism – like her son Gus, 7 – get the support they need. Ms Murden raised more than $1620 for the I CAN Network, which is part of its AWEgust for AWEtism campaign. Friends and family were quick to support her efforts to kick her daily coffee fix, taking her well beyond her original fundraising target of $700. Ms Murden says I CAN’s emphasis on the things people with autism can achieve is one

of the reasons she chose to become involved. ‘‘It’s quite different and refreshing,’’ she says. ‘‘I’m an optimist and I do find a lot of the stuff around about autism tends to have a negative spin. ‘‘A lot of people do have a hard time with it, but everybody, whether they’re autistic or not, has hardships. I like that I CAN focuses on their strengths.’’ Donations are still being accepted. Details: goo.gl/KuvdoD Matt Crossman

Briefs Women’s plan sets bar

Macedon Ranges council’s ‘women in emergencies’ plan has been commended by the International Federation of the Red Cross and is in line for a national award. Developed in partnership with local emergency services and support agencies, the plan was the first of its kind created by a Victorian council.

Vehicles for sale on public land Council is reminding residents that it is an offence under Local Law No.10 to park and display vehicles for sale on Council roads, nature strips, footpaths and other public land. Parking vehicles on roadsides and Council land creates hazards for motorists as it can cause visual distractions and traffic congestion issues. Owners of these vehicles may receive on-the-spot infringements of $200.

Creek runs free

A section of a small creek in central Sunbury has been transformed by a Melbourne Water project. Most of Melba Creek is in pipes, but a small part remains an open waterway. Banks along this section have been stabilised to prevent erosion and retain the natural look and feel.

No-go for roadside car sales

Macedon Ranges motorists are being warned they could be fined $200 for parking vehicles for sale on public land. Council community safety manager Anne-Louise Lindner said there had been a recent increase in vehicles being parked in these areas. ‘‘We are not trying to stop people from advertising the sale of their

vehicles, but they must do so on their own property, or elsewhere,’’ Ms Lindner said.

Roof repairs on the way

The roof of an ageing administration building at Lancefield Primary School will finally be repaired, with the state government allocating much-needed maintenance money. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the school council and principal had raised ongoing concerns about maintenance funding during last year’s election campaign.

Enviro plan submissions due

Submissions to Macedon Ranges council’s new environment strategy close this Friday. The plan, designed to guide planning, decision-making and activities, is expected to include biodiversity protection, climate change mitigation and sustainable land and water management measures. Details: 5421 9659

Heart attack rates ‘too high’ By Matt Crossman High cholesterol and blood pressure, and smoking, are the biggest heart health threats faced by Sunbury and Macedon Ranges residents. The latest Victorian Heart Maps data, released by the Heart Foundation, shows 13.34 heart attacks for every 10,000 people in the Macedon Ranges during 2013. The rate in Hume was 17.97. While the figures were an improvement on those recorded in 2008, experts say they remain too high.

Rates for cardiac arrest were largely static, at 5.52 per 10,000 in the Macedon Ranges and 6.24 in Hume. Loddon was the state’s worst area for heart health, with a heart attack rate of 63.78 per 10,000. Across the state, rates tended to be much higher in regional areas. Drawing links between heart problems and socioeconomic disadvantage, Heart Foundation chief executive Diana Heggie said too many people didn’t have access to the information and resources needed to prevent and manage heart disease. ‘‘The findings reinforce the need for

greater emphasis on prevention and enabling communities to respond to emergencies,’’ Ms Heggie said. Earlier this year, a 46-year-old woman was showing signs of developing a heart attack when she was given life-saving treatment at Kyneton District Health’s (KDH) 24-hour urgent care centre. One of the hospital’s rural and isolated practice endorsed registered nurses administered early intervention drugs and fast-tracked the woman’s admission to a Melbourne hospital via a retrieval service. KDH chief executive Maree Cuddihy said

the woman avoided a stressful and potentially life-threatening drive to the city. ‘‘It’s an example that highlights how fortunate we are in the Macedon Ranges to have proximity to quality healthcare, both close to home and not too far along the freeway,’’ she said. Medical services director Dr Peter Sloan said regular GP visits were important. ‘‘If you can manage high cholesterol, blood pressure and smoking with your health professional, and make an effort to eat well and exercise regularly, then you’re probably looking after your heart reasonably well,’’ he said.

Animal lovers can help the pets of people who are doing it tough, with Gisborne Veterinary Clinic now a designated drop-off point for Pets of the Homeless Melbourne. Veterinary nurse Kim Szatkowski and volunteer Kristin Kerr – pictured with dogs Tzubi and Jensen – have set up the Gisborne in-store donation depot. Pets of the Homeless Melbourne seeks to raise awareness and help the pets of people who are homeless or at risk of losing their homes. Items on the organisation’s wish list include dog and cat food, toys, flea and worming treatments, bedding, snap-lock bags, collars, leashes and waterproof jackets. Donations can be left at the Gisborne clinic in Robertson Street. Details: 5428 2805 or goo.gl/9Rfrv5

Mates’ journey tightens bonds As a former solider, Gisborne’s Stewart Smillie knows the importance of preparation, mateship and endurance. But he says even he was surprised by the physical and emotional mountains he had to scale along the Kokoda Trail. Mr Smillie and brother-in-law Greg Deveson, also a Gisborne resident, recently returned from an epic journey along the track made famous by Australia’s World War II diggers. While extensive training on Mount Macedon and cardio work in the gym had them physically ready, the 96-kilometre trek took its toll on their bodies. Mr Smillie was amazed how the experience affected him emotionally. ‘‘It really crystallises the sacrifices some of those blokes made,’’ he says. ‘‘I wasn’t prepared for how emotional it would be.’’ Trudging through swamps, grasslands and dense jungle foliage in stifling conditions, Mr Smillie says the 12 crew on the trek with him forged a deep emotional connection to an important part of Australia’s military history. ‘‘As we were walking through, we were reflecting on how difficult it was, but we were all saying, ‘Imagine doing this in the wrong clothing, carrying a rifle and having someone shooting back at you’.’’ The bond between the Gisborne friends was strengthened and deepened. ‘‘We’ve known each other for 40 years, but we really got to know each other on the

track,â€? Mr Smillie said. ‘‘Being ex-army, I understand the concept of mateship, but this was something else. ‘‘When you go to the memorials, they [acknowledge] courage, bravery, mateship and endurance ‌ they’re all the characteristics of the Australian soldiers when they were over there. “It was a very proud moment when Greg and I stood there, next to the mateship one.’’

A new sensory garden in the centre of Riddells Creek is just one example of the successful projects funded by a Western Water scheme. Riddells Creek Park Upgrade Committee member Narelle McGellin says the reflective space, part of a larger upgrade of Lions Park, is being enjoyed by many people in the community. ‘‘We’ve had so much great feedback from residents about how the new garden has improved the park,’’ she says. Western Water is inviting community and

environmental groups in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges to apply for up to $2000 as part of its annual grants program. Three grants are on offer: one for community gardens, one for school gardens, and the other for projects to improve biodiversity and liveability. All projects must be within Western Water’s service area. Entries close September 30. Details: 9218 5455 Matt Crossman

What’s at steak? From a classic T-bone to an eye-fillet, choosing the perfect steak can sometimes be a little daunting. With so many different types and cuts available, what are the important factors? Fine texture and firm to touch A piece of steak that holds its structure well is ideal. Meat shouldn’t feel slimy. If there is blood it shouldn’t be firm or gelatinous. Bright colour Vibrant colour indicates freshness. Marbling Threads of fat running through the meat increase its juiciness, tenderness and flavor. But a good piece of meat can still be had without it. Use-by date Very important if you’re buying pre-packaged meat. Meat normally has a useby-date of about five days if stored correctly. Moisture If buying pre-packaged meat, check that it doesn’t have excessive moisture at the bottom of the package – when cooked it will taste dried-out. Thickness Where possible, always buy steak of consistent thickness, as it will cook evenly. Colour of fat, bone The fat and bone should be whitish in colour. If it has a brownish colour, it may get a sour taste once it’s cooked.

Bellevue is an absolute charmer, with views of Mount William and within walking distance of shops and the local primary school. Lined with painted boards, the bedrooms are an old-world treat, and one has a fireplace with a period surround. They share a newly made-over bathroom, which incorporates a European laundry. A newly added lounge room at the back has large windows letting in plenty of natural light, and a sliding door leading to a deck, with canvas wind-shelter screens, and a covered barbecue area. The combined kitchen-meals area, under ceiling bulkheads, has timber-trimmed cabinetry and an upright cooker – a wood heater keeps things cosy. Surrounding gardens are very pretty and, adding to the period feel, a Nissen hut provides space for two cars, a workshop and storage.

From the customised leadlight kitchen window which frames Mount Macedon views, to boarded ceilings with exposed beams (some natural, others white), this is a house oozing charm and character. The ground floor has two bedrooms (with wardrobes), a bathroom, big laundry and a vast living room fully lined with natural boards. Upstairs are two more bedrooms, the main with a lovely leadlight bay window with seat. Each shares a bathroom with leadlight feature window. Also up here are a newly carpeted sitting room and a meals zone, each accessing a partially covered balcony running along two sides. The smart galley kitchen (with floorboards) has all mod cons, including a semi-commercial cooker. Gardens are a mix of formal hedging and mature exotics and there’s an outdoor spa. Gas heating, split-system, garden shed, a carport and garage are other features on the block of about 2023 square metres – all close to train station, primary school and freeway access.

As big as a small house, this well-maintained, charming unit has surrounding gardens that add both beauty and privacy. Sure to entice first-home buyers and downsizers, the unit has two bedrooms (each with built-in wardrobes and roman blinds) that share a two-way bathroom and separate toilet; the laundry is next door. A north-facing carpeted living zone (with split-system) adjoins the tiled meals area and kitchen. Large, and in classic charcoal and white, the kitchen has a return island bench, corner pantry, subway splashback tiles, dishwasher, electric cooktop and stainless-steel underbench oven. A good-sized square of concrete is the spot to set up outdoor seating; it couples with a neat lawn and landscaping to deliver pleasing entertainment space. Outdoor sunblinds, gutter guards and a remote-controlled garage with internal access are other features at a fully fenced property with easy access to the freeway.

This meticulously presented house on about 8094 square metres is in a fabulous court location and close to all services. And it’s sure to tick boxes for a family looking for lifestyle elements such as a great sectioned-off pony paddock and extra space galore for kicking the footy or whacking the cricket ball. Double-glazed windows, seven-star energy rating, multiple ceiling fans, three split-systems, gas ducted heating, water tanks and three-phase power are sought-after extras. The main bedroom at the front has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite with enclosed toilet. Other bedrooms (with wardrobes), the main bathroom, separate laundry and cupboard laundry are down a rear hallway. There’s also a study. The kitchen has an island bench, glass splashback, dishwasher and 900mm gas cooker. A huge covered pergola looks out to the vast backyard and there’s a carport to house a boat or caravan and a double garage with internal access.

RIDDELLS CREEK 84 Riverside Drive, 3431 Gisborne Real Estate: 5428 8895

Price: $930,000

With Riddells Creek flowing along the rear boundary, it’s little wonder this pristine property of about 8.09 hectares has the moniker of “Larapinta”, an Aboriginal word meaning ‘flowing waters’ – and the creek has fine fishing. Pasture land flows like a green carpet down to the creek and is divided into seven fenced paddocks, each with troughs. Owners say about 1400 hay bales are coaxed from the rich black soil, and a large dam with pumps, an efficient bore and about 283,905 litres stored in tanks guarantee constant water supply. A top-notch place to run ponies or cattle,

3

it also has a stable and tack room, cattle yards, workshop/machinery shed, hay and wood storage sheds and an open-bay shed. Now the double-brick residence, an immaculately presented example of a mid-80s homestead with wraparound verandah and the era’s decor of exposed bricks and natural timber in most rooms. Entry is directly into a big, carpeted lounge room with ceiling fan, and a wood heater and storage nook set in a brick wall. A study (or fourth bedroom) and the main bedroom are off the lounge room, the main with two built-in wardrobes and an en suite with double shower, a spa, heated towel

rail, timber vanity unit and a linen closet. Two more bedrooms, main bathroom and separate toilet are behind a sliding door off the meals zone, and another sliding door here leads to a carpeted rumpus room. (Lots of doors separating zones deliver better temperature and noise control.) The kitchen, with hard-wearing cork flooring, is country personified: Tasmanian ash cabinetry and redgum benchtops, along with dishwasher, wall oven and 900mm electric cooktop. And the views from the sink are all about lifting the spirits. When it comes to outdoor entertainment, how does a cellar (built into a hillside) able

2

to hold about 840 bottles and an adjoining wisteria-clad pergola sound? And how about an utterly neat brick studio/guest cottage with carpeted living room, bathroom and sink? Whether catering for guests, teens or extended family, this combination of treats is a surefire winner. Dry stone walls flanking the driveway gate, cobblestones under verandahs, rock-edged gardens, a double carport and remote-controlled double garage are part of a beautiful property a mere five-minute drive from Gisborne. The basic idea is to generate a future income and to maximise capital gains, i.e. the worth of the property in the future compared with its value today. So the aim is to find such property in areas which have a history of good letting prospects and capital growth. Naturally, the condition of the property must also be considered.

Lancefield’s Gemma Jackson and Rupertswood’s Maddison Gay contest the ball. (Shawn Smits)

Sharks’ face-off a finals’ first By Tara Murray Rupertswood has finally broken its finals hoodoo in the Riddell District Netball League. Having lost every A-grade finals match in its three years in the competition to date, the win against Lancefield on Sunday couldn’t have come soon enough. Although the Tigers fought hard in the first half, only trailing by three goals at the main break, the experience of the Sharks shone through in the second half. Rupertswood shot away for its 54-35 win. Sharks’ coach Di McCormack was relieved to have finally bagged a finals win. “The monkey is off the back,” she said. “We were up by three goals a few times in the first half, but we really got into it in the second half. “Once we hit out straps in the third quarter, we never looked back. “The girls played a solid strong game, after adjusting to some nerves.” The Sharks were thrown a curve-ball before the game, with sickness ruling out a couple of players. “Ebony Lyons had gastro, while Sara Febo was sick as well,” the coach said. “Ailish [McCormack] had rolled her ankle and had only got the go-ahead from the physio the day before, and was a little bit proppy. “Emma Wright also missed the game with injury.”

This meant Maddi Gay had to play wing defence, not a position she is familiar with. “She isn’t as strong in wing defence as she is in other positions, but she was really strong on court,” McCormack said. The injuries also meant under-19 player Eloise Freeman got court time in the third quarter. After struggling with windy conditions the week prior, the Sharks handled similar weather much better against the Tigers last weekend. “I gave Alex Maher the three votes; she was the best shooter on the court. I was able to get all three goalers on, which was really good,” McCormack said. “Maher shot 26 goals from 27 attempts and the defensive duo of Tess Abbott and Kirsten Daly really stood up in the second half. “After half-time, they had worked out what they needed to do, and everything seemed to click for them,” she said. For the Tigers, Savaii Williams shot 22 goals. The Sharks will now face Riddell in this weekend’s preliminary final after Macedon surprisingly beat the Bombers last weekend. When the Sharks faced Riddell for the qualifying final only two weekends ago, the Bombers won 51-25. “We have to come with a better mental side of things,” McCormack said, anticipating a tough contest. “We have the skills, we just need to believe in ourselves and not get down when we are trailing.”

Lions cast their eyes to third straight grand final Sunbury Lions’ confidence is growing – and so is its hopes of playing in a third successive grand final in the Ballarat Netball League. After a confidence-boosting win against Redan in the first week of finals, the Lions were on top on the scoreboard all through Sunday’s semi-final against East Point. After leading by 11 goals at three-quarter-time, the Lions faded but held on to win 49-43. Conditions were difficult and coach Adam Boldiston said there was a distinct scoring end. “The court slopes at one end. It’s hard work getting the ball into the circle and several lobs went over the base line,” he said. “The other end is more protected and easier to shoot at.”

The Lions made the most of the scoring end early in the game. “We used that to our advantage and had a six-goal lead at quarter-time,” Boldiston said. “They came back in the second quarter to trail by three at half-time.” The decision to bring on Ruth Smith at goal attack and switch the circle defenders paid off in the third quarter. “I started with the two taller goalers in Chloe Curran and Abbey Healy but thought I needed more run and brought Ruth on,” Boldiston said. “That worked and we won the quarter by eight goals to be 11 in front.” But the Lions knew they couldn’t slack off.

“I was never confident knowing they were shooting to the scoring end,” Boldiston said. “We stuck to our task when we knew they would come back at us.” Boldiston said the composure of the younger players had impressed him. “It was a team effort,” he said. “Chloe was fantastic, shooting 40 goals from 52 attempts. The other shooters weren’t as accurate but did their job. Ruth didn’t shoot much but was able to draw an opponent and free up Chloe.” The Lions face Lake Wendouree in the preliminary final on Saturday for a spot in the Big One against North Ballarat City on September 19.

Maybe this time … By Liam Twomey Diggers Rest will be hoping it’s a case of third time lucky in its bid for this year’s Riddell District Football League cup. After narrowly losing the past two grand finals, the Burras have again qualified for the biggest game of the year. They booked their place in the main game after a 21-point win against Romsey on Saturday. Despite leading at every change, there was nothing easy about the win, with the Burras forced to fight hard all afternoon. Leading by just nine points at the final break, Diggers Rest seized the momentum with the first three goals of the final quarter slammed through by Jason Williams, Luke Smailes and coach Shaun Sims. “I thought we started fairly well and they probably missed a couple of chances early, which gave us a decent lead at quarter-time,” Sims said. “Our coaching staff had planned really well and we followed through with that for most of the game. “There were a couple of chances where we could have run away with the game. Credit to Romsey, though; they would keep coming back and kept pushing.” Williams was a clear standout for his side, finishing with five goals. He was well supported by Smailes and Jamie Lobb, who each kicked three. Around the ground, Thomas Gleeson and Cameron McCabe were impressive. “Jason was playing on-ball and ended up with five goals,” Sims said. “He just took his opportunities. He’s such a hard match-up when he’s on the forward line. “Our forward line has been very flexible all year. We seem to have a lot of guys popping up and kicking goals.” For Romsey, Mitchell Farmer’s six goals weren’t enough to snatch the game. The Redbacks struggled with avenues to goal, with only five players hitting the scoreboard. Diggers Rest now enjoys the perfect preparation leading into a grand final. The Burras will look on as Romsey and Broadford square off in the RDFL’s preliminary final. They then face the winner of that match in the grand final on Sunday, September 20. Diggers Rest has beaten both opponents this year. Elsewhere at the weekend, Diggers Rest was successful in its reserves competition, defeating Rupertswood by a single point. In a thrilling, if not frustrating encounter, the Burras held on to the lead by a single-digit thread for most of the afternoon. Diggers Rest then kicked 1.5 in the last term, which proved enough for the Burras to hold on until the siren for their nail-biting 6.14 (50) - 7.7 (49) win.

“The Lakers are a tall side all over the court,” Boldiston said. “We played them in round two in torrential rain and stayed with them for three quarters. “It won’t be easy, but if we play the way we did this week I can’t see why we can’t win.” Boldiston is hoping Kate Fletcher will return from injury this week. It was a good weekend for the Lions with their A-reserve side winning into the grand final, while the B and C-graders also had wins and will feature in preliminary finals on Saturday. Tara Murray

Redbacks still with a chance From being in a prime position to go straight through to the Riddell District Football League grand final, Romsey ran out of legs in the final term of its semi-final against Diggers Rest. The Redbacks trailed Diggers Rest by nine points at the last break and were kicking with the wind in the final quarter. But the Burras out-ran and out-scored the Redbacks in the last term to win 16.14 (110) - 13.11 (89) and go through to their third successive grand final. For Redbacks coach Dean Helmers, it came down to not having the legs to go with Diggers Rest in that last term. “We knew it would be tough,” Helmers said. “We were in the game for three quarters and ran out of puff. After trailing early, we kept clawing our way back and were nine points down at the last break. “At three-quarter-time, I thought we were going to win it, but we didn’t fire a shot.” Helmers said the side had put in a mixed year on the training track. “The shorter break as well didn’t help after a tough game last week.” He said Ayden Tessari on the back line, Cam Wight in the ruck and the toughness of Nathan Rayment in the middle were the standouts for his side. The loss, though, isn’t the end of the season for the Redbacks, who get a second shot at making the grand final, this time against Broadford. “We’re under no illusions of what we have to do,” Helmers said. “I think we take a lot of confidence into this week and if we can win we will have a grand final at home with three handy inclusions to come back into the side.” The coach said Nathan Tessari, who was unavailable, captain Steve Burlak, who was rested due to being sore, and Ben Sullivan, who is battling a back injury, should be right for this week. Broadford shocked Riddell on Sunday to earn a preliminary final berth. Having finished sixth, the Kangaroos have knocked out the third-placed Rupertswood and minor premiers the Bombers in successive weeks. Against the Bombers, the Kangaroos could have had the game virtually won by quarter-time if they had kicked straight. Instead, it was 1.9 in the first term to lead by a point. Making the most of the wind in the third quarter, the Kangaroos got out to a 31-point lead at the last break – enough to hold off the Bombers.

Panel shares the load By Tara Murray Sunbury Cricket Club is confident an experienced coaching panel will help it go one step further in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup this season. The club, which has been runner-up for the past two seasons, has gone for a three-man panel instead of a single coach. Club president Travis Botten will be director of coaching, while Heath Boffey will coach the bowlers and Paul Webber the batting. Jason McGann will captain the senior side. Sunbury secretary Marty Kelders said he was confident the coaching structure would work. “It’s difficult to attract a playing coach,” Kelders said. “You can only pay one person as coach and it’s hard to attract people to a hard-wicket competition. “So we went with Plan B . . . Trevor will be director of coaching and oversee net practice. “Heath and Paul have volunteered to help the younger players. Heath has coached at Rupertswood and Paul has coached our club.” As well, the club has announced a new partnership with Sunbury Bowling Club. Kelders said an unofficial partnership with the bowling club over the past couple of years had been fruitful for both. “The situation with the bowling club is a unique situation . . . most cricket clubs are joined with a football club or sporting group,” he said. “We’ve been there a couple of years now and it’s become an official partnership now. “It seems like it’s working out for both clubs. We aren’t visitors now; we’re under the ‘Club Sunbury’ umbrella. “It may have seemed odd initially, but there’s a lot of connections between the two clubs.”

Tigers put up fight, but adios Kyneton’s first finals series since 2003 is over, with the Tigers knocked out of the Bendigo Football League finals in the first round. With a big gap opening between the top four and fifth-placed Kyneton this season, the Tigers were always going to be challenged to advance past the elimination stage. Playing Eaglehawk, they weren’t wiped off the ground, as many may have expected, losing 12.17 (89) - 9.9 (63). The Tigers started well, leading at quarter-time, before the Hawks got going in the second term to lead by 13 points at the main break. The Tigers didn’t let the Hawks get away with it in the third and were still in the game, trailing by only three goals going into the final break. Both sides kicked four goals in the final quarter, but Eaglehawk wasted opportunities kicking 4.8 as it extended the final margin. Ben Weightman kicked three goals and Mitchell Scholard two for the Tigers, while the experienced Ryan Carafa and Alik Magin were named among the best. Sean Williams kicked six goals for Eaglehawk, which will now play Sandhurst in the semi-finals on Sunday. In a big boost for the club, caretaker coach Luke Beattie has signed on to continue for two years. Beattie took over when the club sacked Mark Adamson three-quarters of the way through the season. Cannons take what they can from a finals fizzer

The Calder Cannons have bowed out in the first week of the TAC Cup finals. The Cannons were blown out of the water in the first three quarters by the Eastern Ranges and found themselves trailing by 64 points at the last break. With nothing to lose, the Cannons fought on in the last quarter, kicking six goals in a row to reduce the margin to 27. The comeback fell short with the Cannons losing 17.8 (110) - 11.10 (76). Their coach, Andrew Johnston, said the result summed up where the club was at this season. “Eastern played really well and it’s a credit to them,” he said. “We were just too far behind. “I said to the boys at three-quarter-time to take the game on, there’s nothing to lose. I asked for the 18 and 19-years-old to step up and enjoy the last time they would play in a Cannons jumper.

“It’s unfortunate to lose, but that’s where we’re at this season; we’re the seventh to eighthbest club.” Johnston said a big last month in the season had taken a toll of the players. “The effort the past month had been massive as they didn’t want to finish the season poorly,” he said. “Playing on a big ground didn’t help either. I don’t question the effort that was put out there today.” The first-year coach said this year’s team had been an unknown quantity at the season’s start. “I didn’t know what they would be like and they didn’t know what I’d be like. “We would love to have finished higher on the ladder but … we played in one final, which is a positive outcome.” He said getting games into a number of 17-year-olds was a big positive. “Campbell Moorfield, Jack Reaper and

Cats braced for glory By Tara Murray Macedon is the first team through to the Riddell District Netball League A-grade grand final. The Cats made the most of facing an undermanned Riddell to make it through to the final game of the season. The 37-34 loss was Riddells first this season. It will now play Rupertswood in a preliminary final for a second chance to make the grand final. Missing Mikaela Vaughan and Madison Caulfield, the Bombers faced Macedon with a different line-up to the one that had been on court in recent weeks. The Cats took advantage to grab a four-goal lead by quarter-time. The Bombers settled in the second term to lead 18-17 at the main break. But it was the Cats who excelled in the second half, leading by three goals at three-quarter-time and extending that to six midway through the last. The Bombers hit back, but only when it was too late. Bec Colwell was the standout shooter as all the others struggled for accuracy. She shot 36 of the Cats’ 37 at 84 per cent accuracy. Cats president Terry Kernan said the team was on a high after making the grand final. The A-grade netballers are the only Cats, netball or football, left in finals. Kernan said he knew early on the girls were in for a good game; they had a glint in their eyes. “Now we’re absolutely over the moon,” Kernan said. “It was fantastic … no one expected us to get there.” Kernan paid tribute to Karri Ambler and Kelly Nicholas, who took over the coaching when the club sacked Melissa Climas in July. “They are just saints,” he said. “They have brought a camaraderie that has made us a united and particularly happy club. “We may not be the best team in the competition, but we are the happiest.” In a massive boost for the side, Tarryn Mackie returned to the action for the first time since round 11. “She’s an absolute delight,” Kernan said. “Everyone played their role on the day, but having Tarryn back was a huge change. “We had a very strategic plan that Karri and Kelly set up, and it worked.” For how the Bombers plan to bounce back, visit www.starweekly.com.au

Hayden Blythe have been good players,” Johnston said. “Joel Bramble didn’t play today but he will become a more consistent player. Jackson McDonald is another one who will take things from this year.” Nick O’Kearney leads the list of players who could be drafted from the club. Last year, it had a record 10 players picked up in the national or rookie draft. “Hopefully, Hisham Kerbatieh gets a shot, and Callum Moore has special attributes,” Johnston said. “Tom Wallis’s leadership and power out of contests has improved so much in the past month – I hope Essendon look at him as a father-son pick. Bruno Laguda has had a pretty good year and doesn’t get the recognition he deserves, while Ben Allan has the ability to play at that level.” Tara Murray

Bulldogs hold tight for win Gisborne had to survive a Kangaroo Flat comeback on its way to an elimination final win in the Bendigo Netball League on Sunday. After leading from the first quarter, the Bulldogs just held on in the end to win 38-37. The teams also met in the final home-and-away round on the previous weekend so Bulldogs coach Simone Trevillian knew exactly what to expect from Kangaroo Flat. The Bulldogs won that game 54-30. “We were definitely prepared,” Trevillian said. “We had to be switched on to play hard, physical netball.” The Bulldogs started the better of the teams and led by five goals at the end of each of the first three quarters. “We were hoping it was enough,” Trevillian said. “They kept pushing and pushing and pushing, but we were able to hold on.” Trevillian put the win down to a couple of things. “Fitness is something we’ve been working on all year,” she said. “Despite them coming back at us, we stayed composed and played safe netball, which you need to do in those circumstances. “We have players who have been in grand finals and most of the girls have played in finals, but it was nerve-racking watching from the sidelines.” It was the Bulldogs’ senior players who stood up when it counted. “Maddi Stewart held her own in the circle when she was copping a lot. It was really physical,” Trevillian said. “Tiana Newman through the mid-court and Polly Salter in defence were really strong, too.” The Bulldogs now face Sandhurst in the semi-finals. “We drew with them earlier in the year and lost by three goals the second time we played them,” Trevillian said. “If we play good, competitive netball we will be a chance.” The Bulldogs’ under-17 netball side also won its elimination final, beating Strathfieldsaye 51-38. In football, the reserves were smashed in the elimination final against Eaglehawk. The under-18s will play in a semi-final after beating Eaglehawk by three points in the elimination final. MOTOR New Sorento’s a bundle of style Kia Sorento has gone ultra stylish in its just-released third generation. Perhaps not a surprise, as Sorrento in Italy has been famed for style for hundreds of years. We aren’t sure why Kia spells its Sorento with just one ‘r’ rather than two as in the Italian original – perhaps to try to stand out from the crowd. As almost a third of vehicles sold in Australia in 2015 will be SUVs, the Sorento’s “look-at-me” style is certainly important. Sorento’s front grille has the now familiar ‘Schreyer’ shape and leaves no doubt which brand it belongs to. The headlights join the grille in a BMW-like manner to increase the visual effect of width. Large cutouts for the foglights join the party and the lower grille is hardly of the shy and retiring type. We like the side profile, particularly the deep windows that continue all the way to the rear. Too many stylists are going for a shapely kick up in the rear-side glass which looks nice but can ruin the view for the children in the rearmost seats. Similarly, we like the practical squared-off tail designed to carry a decent amount of luggage even when all seven seats are in use. As before, the Kia Sorento is offered in Si, SLi and Platinum grades. Prices begin at a pretty reasonable $40,990 for a petrol two-wheel-drive Si and run up to $55,990 if you chose a Platinum with the turbo-diesel and all-wheel-drive. Even the lower-cost Sorento Si is well equipped, with 17-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, power windows and mirrors and

petrol or diesel engines. Initial road testing at the Sorento launch out of Port Douglas shows the 3.3-litre V6 petrol engine has decent torque at normal engine revs and the lighter weight of the new design petrol made it our favourite. The petrol powerplant is only offered in 2WD models (the front wheels). As befits its heavier duty use, the diesel is used in Sorentos with all-wheel-drive.

wood-look interior trim among quite a list of other upmarket features. The SLi has 18-inch alloys, the wood-look is extended to the steering wheel and centre console and there are sporty looking alloy pedals. Topping it off is the Sorento Platinum, with a huge sunroof, 19-inch alloy wheels, a heated steering wheel and a more powerful stereo. All-new Kia Sorento comes with a choice of

In a sign of the times all Sorento models have a six-speed automatic. The big Sorento is smooth, quiet and comfortable and leans in the people mover direction rather than that of a bush basher. The all-new Kia Sorento is stylish, spacious, smooth and a real pleasure to drive. We can see it pulling increased sales over the just-superseded model.
