All smiles at season’s end The Bombers are the 2015 Riddell District Football Netball League A-grade netball premiers. Riddell has been the best team all season and proved too strong for Macedon in Sunday’s grand final, winning 51-34 at Romsey Park. Drop Sunbury split: report Supporters of a stand-alone Sunbury council have cried foul after transition auditors recommended the town’s planned split from Hume be abandoned. Those opposed to separation, however, have urged people to move on, calling for an end to the uncertainty they say has hung over Sunbury and Hume for too long. As reported by Star Weekly online, the auditors’ report, presented to Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins on August 28 and released to the public last Thursday, said there were too many concerns about the proposed new council’s viability. ‘‘It is the view of the transition auditors that the separation of Sunbury from the municipality of Hume at this time is so problematic that it
should not proceed,’’ the report by auditors Frank Vincent and John Watson found. The two auditors were appointed by the government in March with a brief to review the separation processes, after the former Liberal government gazetted formal notices that a new Sunbury council would start on July 1 this year. The split was put on hold after Ms Hutchins said too many questions remained unanswered. The auditors said they believed previous financial advice prepared by three consultants affirmed that a Sunbury council was unlikely to be sustainable without significant financial assistance, high rates and/or reduced services. Their report stated any savings that could be achieved through innovations may not provide the secure revenue base needed. It also stated a proposed cross-subsidy from Hume council to Sunbury would constitute a substantial

shift from the well-established principle that councils operate on the rate base generated within their boundaries. The auditors said abandoning the planned split would protect Sunbury ratepayers and ensure planned capital works, including a new global learning centre, would be delivered. ‘‘If they occur, projected population increases would place Sunbury in a better position at some time in the future to support a council from its own rate base,’’ the report noted. Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Bernie Finn said the recommendations were ‘‘no surprise’’, and he urged split supporters not to drop their bundle. Both Mr Finn and Sunbury Residents Association president Bernie O’Farrell accused the government of having made its decision before launching the year-long review.
Mr O’Farrell said split supporters would keep fighting for an independent Sunbury, regardless of Ms Hutchins’ eventual decision, ‘‘even if it takes the election of a new government’’. Sunbury-based Hume councillor Ann Potter says she hopes people will move on. ‘‘We’ve been governing with uncertainty for too long. We want to get on with things, like planning the new global learning centre. There’ve been enough delays.’’ Hume chief executive Domenic Isola said the council held serious concerns about the process undertaken by the previous government, and he welcomed the auditors’ findings. Both Mr Isola and mayor Adem Atmaca urged this government to make its final decision quickly. Ms Hutchins said she would carefully consider the auditors’ recommendations. Public to have say on rail freeze By Matt Crossman A Sunbury group fighting to give city commuters the right to continue using country V/Line trains has been buoyed by a meeting with transport authorities. Sunbury Train Association (STA) members last week met with representatives of Public Transport Victoria and Transport Minister Jacinta Allan to present a report prepared after extensive consultation with commuters. STA spokeswoman Melissa Limb said the group was pleased that it secured a commitment to hold a public meeting on the issue.
‘‘They were very co-operative and gave us a great chance to share the community’s views,’’ Ms Limb said. ‘‘We’re hopeful that changes can be made. Sunbury is a growing suburb and needs better train services.’’ As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, restrictions barring Sunbury commuters from V/Line trains will not be enforced until next January, but passengers are being actively discouraged from getting on board. The changes, prompted by the completion of the Regional Rail Link, aim to reduce overcrowding on Bendigo-bound trains.
The government recently added 10 extra peak-time Metro services a week, with the promise of more to come. But critics say the changes, with access to more than 200 services to be removed, are unfair to Sunbury passengers. Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Bernie Finn said people wanted to know why they were being shafted, with Metro services slower and less frequent, while many V/Line trains stopping at Sunbury were only a third full. ‘‘You’re standing on the platform, you’re staring at empty seats, but you know that if you get on board, from next year you’ll be fined.’’
STA wants to keep access to all V/Line services, gain more Metro services, including some express trains, and have all Metro services extended from Watergardens to Sunbury. Until now, Sunbury has received about half the Metro services travelling to Watergardens. At last week’s meeting, organised by Sunbury Labor MP Josh Bull, it was noted that Sunbury is a fringe suburb serviced by V/Line and Metro, but not fully by either. Mr Bull described the meeting as positive. A petition with 1771 signatures calling for ongoing V/Line access for Sunbury commuters has been presented to Parliament.

Two works by a Sunbury painter are on their way to Italy for a special exhibition celebrating Australian art and culture. Debra Vivarini-Lorenzi, who has been painting since she was a child, says the selection of acrylic canvas pieces for the November show are among the highlights of her lengthy career. One of the works depicts mist coming in over Macedon, while the other, of cockatoos sitting on a fence, was inspired by a photo a friend posted on Facebook.
MP Bernie Finn has called for an urgent and thorough investigation of the Bulla tip. Mr Finn said what went into the tip was a mystery. “Of recent times there has been speculation as to what actually goes into the tip and speculation that has led to a view that maybe asbestos is being dumped,” he said. “It’s important to know exactly what is in there and what’s being dumped in there.” The Western Metropolitan Region MP last week asked Environment, Climate Change and Water Minister Lisa Neville to initiate a full Environment Protection Authority investigation into the landfill site at Sunbury Road operated by Bulla Tip and Quarry. Mr Finn said he passed the tip frequently and could vouch for the “horrendous” smell that lingers in the area; he likened it to the smell curdled milk. “It’s only fair, it’s only right and reasonable that locals have a right to know what is dumped practically in their backyards,” he said. Mr Finn’s comments come a month after the EPA admitted to an administrative error that allowed asbestos to be disposed of at the site without the appropriate licence. In response to the finding, EPA chief executive officer Nial Finegan ordered an independent review into the licence of every Victorian tip that accepts asbestos. Bulla resident and Stop Bulla Toxic Tip Action Group spokeswoman Carmel Egan said the group wholeheartedly endorsed Mr Finn’s comments. Lexi Cottee

Enough for everyone By Matt Crossman A community kitchen that feeds more than 150 disadvantaged Sunbury residents every week will celebrate two years of operation while keeping an eye on the future. Every Monday night at the Elizabeth Drive Neighbourhood House, the Rotary Club of Sunbury’s Family Community Kitchen serves up good food, giving a chance for people who might otherwise be isolated to socialise. Spokeswoman Marianne Williams says the free meal is a highlight of the week for many.
‘‘They so look forward to it,’’ she says. ‘‘Many of them do what they can to help, too, whether by volunteering or bringing in a bottle of cream, or whatever they can.’’ Ms Williams says the kitchen caters for people from many backgrounds who, for whatever reason, find themselves in need. ‘‘It can be people who struggle to afford good food, people who can’t cook for themselves … some of our regulars are older people who don’t know how to cook properly because they’ve lost their spouse, who always did it for them.’’ The kitchen survives on the generosity of an
army of more than 50 volunteers and support from Rotary and organisations, such as food charity SecondBite. Organisers will hold a ‘‘pay it forward’’ dinner on September 28 to raise money and help get ready for an influx of diners over summer months. People can enjoy a three-course buffet meal for $35, with each donation to pay for someone’s meal for the next 10 weeks. The fundraiser, from 5.15-7.30pm, includes live Irish music. A courtesy bus is available for Sunbury residents. Phone 0419 369 446 or email marianne@nmcatering.com.au
Sunbury and Macedon Ranges schools will share more than $2.5 million of state government funds to improve teaching resources and student performance. While the state opposition criticised the government for trying to pass off the latest allocation as extra money, saying it had already been included in May’s budget, the government said funding announced last week would lead to more students reaching the highest levels of reading, maths and science. Those needing extra help would also be supported through literacy and numeracy programs. Sunbury schools to receive money included Sunbury College ($664,997), Sunbury Heights Primary School ($281,955), Sunbury Downs College ($231,195) and Sunbury West Primary School ($100,824). Kyneton Secondary College ($120,724), Kyneton Primary School ($69,986), Romsey Primary School ($34,109) and Gisborne Primary School ($23,992) were among Macedon electorate schools to benefit. Other primary schools in Sunbury, Diggers Rest, Woodend, Lancefield, New Gisborne, Riddells Creek, Macedon, Trentham, Clarkefield and Newham also received funding. The government said the money was on top of funds provided for enrolment growth, indexation and everyday running costs. Matt Crossman

Chosen from more than 100 entries statewide, reproductions of James Chapman’s winning design (pictured) will be displayed at all Vinnies stores around Victoria. Created after a lengthy class discussion, James’s drawings touch on the problems of homelessness, unemployment and disability.

Disability scheme due May 2017 By Matt Crossman Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges disability advocates say there’s a feeling of immense relief following confirmation of a full roll-out of the National Disability Insurance Scheme. The federal and state governments last week reached a deal to ensure the NDIS will be gradually introduced across Victoria, starting in Whittlesea next July and coming to the Macedon Ranges in May, 2017. The scheme will provide personalised care and support for people with disabilities by July, 2019.
Sunbury disability advocate Phil Hatton said the NDIS would fix a broken and messy system. ‘‘At the moment, getting assistance for parents is an absolute minefield,’’ he said. ‘‘Under the NDIS, people shouldn’t have to go through so much bureaucracy. They won’t have to go to Centrelink for this and the Education Department for that. ‘‘A lot of people are very relieved that this is finally happening.’’ Federal Bendigo Labor MP Lisa Chesters said close to 3400 people in her electorate
would get extra support and choices in how they received it. “I’ve learnt first-hand of the challenges disability service workers now face,” she said. “The sector needs to support people with a disability better. “I also know how important an early rollout of the NDIS is for Bendigo and our people with a disability and their families, many of whom are in desperate need of respite, support and choice. “Once fully rolled out, the NDIS will see the end of rationed services and waiting lists.’’
McEwen Labor MP Rob Mitchell welcomed the scheme. He said the state government would add $2.5 billion a year to the federal government’s $2.6 billion, more than doubling the current funding for disability support. ‘‘The NDIS is a key achievement in delivering for the most vulnerable members of our community,” he said. ‘‘This is an historic day for Victoria and a victory for people with a disability, their families and loved ones who fought so hard for this reform.”
Get in the swim, early Sunbury and Macedon Ranges parents have been urged to ensure young children are taught to swim, with falls into water cited as the most common cause of their drowning deaths. The Royal Lifesaving Association’s 2104-15 National Drowning Report showed a 30 per cent increase in drowning deaths of Australian children aged four and under – from 20 cases to 26. Chief executive Justin Scarr said the large increase in children drowning was alarming. ‘‘Active adult supervision and restricting access to water … are key strategies to reduce these tragic incidents,’’ he said. Hume council’s acting city infrastructure director David Fricke encouraged parents to enrol their children in classes at Sunbury. ‘‘Every child should learn to swim, and now is a great time to start as the warmer weather approaches,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s vital that people know how to be safe

in pools and at the beach.’’ Mr Fricke said the Sunbury aquatic centre’s classes equipped people, from infants to seniors, with the skills needed to survive if they get into trouble in the water. ‘‘Our centre’s classes are based on Life Saving Victoria’s Swim and Survive program,” he said. ‘‘In the school holidays, we offer intensive five-day sessions so that young people can learn how to swim and survive a water emergency.’’ Aquatic centres at Gisborne and Kyneton also run learn-to-swim programs. The report found 39 Victorians drowned in the past year. It also showed that 37 per cent of drowning deaths occurred in inland waterways, such as rivers, lakes and dams. A visit to Kyneton District Health (KDH) has given year 11 students from Sacred Heart College some real-life insight into concepts that textbooks can never truly explain. Nurse Michelle Clough and midwife Catherine Prestney provided context to the amazing story of birth and human development as part of an ongoing partnership with the school. Two placentas from babies recently born at KDH and a birthing video proved challenging for some students. But their mild displeasure was soon replaced by a deeper understanding of life’s beginnings. ‘‘They broke down knowledge into language that the students could understand and also used the terms we teach,’’ Sacred Heart health and human development teacher Mel Bratovic said. ‘‘It was great to have them prompt students with questions and have friendly experts lead the discussion.’’ Student Connor Maxwell said the visit was ‘‘a real eye-opener’’.

Council cool on recording plea By Matt Crossman Calls for Macedon Ranges council to record its monthly meetings appear likely to fall on deaf ears. Council management has deemed the costs involved prohibitive, but Newham resident Matthew Nickson has launched a petition urging the council to install recording equipment in an effort to boost its accountability and transparency. Mr Nickson has compiled a survey showing 24 of the state’s 79 councils record or stream meetings via the internet, or plan to do so.
‘‘The technology is there,’’ he said, calling on the council to make recordings available on its website. ‘‘If you look at the trend last year and this year, there are lots of councils moving towards it. ‘‘What’s important is that the community needs to know, especially when there are decisions where they’ve gone against what the officer has recommended in accordance with the planning policy.’’ Mr Nickson said he considered the recording of meetings to be good governance. ‘‘It allows everybody to be involved. Council
meetings are at dinner time so if you’ve got a young family you really can’t get along.’’ Council’s corporate services director, Glenn Owens, said similar proposals had been investigated before. “There were expensive set-up costs and there would be operational difficulties and poor quality transmission due to our limited access to high-speed broadband,’’ he said. Mr Nickson said the costs of setting up recording equipment would be worth it. ‘‘Bendigo council don’t record, but what they do is do it in conjunction with community radio,’’ he said.
‘‘People up there say it’s actually proven to be extremely important to record the meetings and have them on archive, especially in light of the heated mosque debate. ‘‘Many people have used those recordings a lot for research and background … that’s why it is important. People want to know what’s going on.’’ The petition has the support of the Macedon Ranges Residents Association, which led a 2010 campaign to have meetings recorded. Mr Nickson plans to present the petition to the council’s November meeting. Details: www.signthepetition.com.au
Workers learn the lingo A conversation between a training expert and the human resources manager of Woodend’s biggest employer has led to lasting benefits for workers from a non-English-speaking background. Kyneton Community Learning Centre (KCLC) was recognised at the state government’s Learn Local awards after conducting a 10-week course with 10 Barker Trailers’ employees, who are originally from the Philippines. KCLC education and training manager John Thomas said the program, which helped explain concepts such as occupational health and safety, and entitlements, also fostered language learning and greater understanding among Barker’s 175 workers, who turn out about 450 custom trailers a year. ‘‘A lot of these guys felt a little bit isolated; they weren’t really sure of themselves,’’ Mr
Thomas said. ‘‘But by the end of it they better understood their importance to the business, and a lot of trust was built up.’’ Barker Trailers human resources manager Lois Hunt said the initiative, which won the Learn Local award for business, had helped break down cultural barriers – ‘‘even things such as leave, how it works and what they’re entitled to,’’ she said. ‘‘There’s a lot of things that most of us who have English as a first language take for granted.’’ Mr Thomas said KCLC was keen to run similar programs with other businesses. Matt Crossman Kyneton Community Learning Centre has won a statewide award for a language/skills program involving Filipino workers at Barker Trailers.

NEWS STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
MY PLACE Jarrod Bell got a taste for volunteering when he was still a teenager. Today, the Scout leader, community radio committee member, SES media officer and SunFest president says that with so many different hats to wear he’s grateful for the calendar app on his phone … Matt Crossman reports.
How old were you when you started volunteering? I’ve been taking on voluntary roles since I was about 15 when, as part of my Venturer Scout award scheme, I was required to provide service to a community group. It’s grown from there to what it is today. How do you manage to fit so much in? I get this question a lot … usually my answer is something along the lines of not sleeping. Truthfully, it’s not an easy task – running different tasks, meetings, planning sessions, training, camps, and all the while finding time to maintain a full-time job and time for family and friends. It’s about trying to be organised … often it’s leaving one meeting to rush to another. I like to think of it as organised chaos. Why take on so many roles? I credit Scouting for my drive to help others and give back, especially my Scout leader Jeff Amy, who instilled in me the notion that all of us have a responsibility to give back and actively participate in our community, to make it grow, develop and become a better place for all of us.
Where does your desire to help come from? I’m passionate about our community. Sunbury is a fantastic place to live, work and learn. I wanted to enable the next generation to have the memories and experiences I had, and that can only happen if people put their hand up and volunteer. What do you get out of volunteering? A real sense of community. Across generations, ages and groups, I see a broad range of different people. Which of your many roles gives you the most satisfaction? My time with the SES has changed my perspective on life. Sunbury SES is a family, dedicated to serving, helping and saving others. I love that we are a group of helpers that go out in the worst of scenarios. What’s your advice to those who want to make Sunbury a better place but don’t know where to start? Find something you are passionate about, then find a way to bring that joy to others. It doesn’t need to be an emergency service or youth organisation, Teach, mentor, advocate, learn – there are probably thousands of ways you can volunteer. It doesn’t need to be a massive commitment – an hour a week, a few hours a month – it’s often taking that first step to say ‘yes I want to participate’.

A grand entry with decorative columns and beautiful light-toned bamboo floorboards sets the scene for this executive-quality abode of about 31 squares. To the right of entry is a study (or extra bedroom) and, opposite, the main bedroom, which has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite. Two more bedrooms down a rear hallway flank the main bathroom and laundry. Living zones include an elegant, carpeted lounge and a spacious dining zone. The kitchen has an island servery bench and dishwasher. Top-notch window dressings feature throughout, and there are ducted heating, evaporative cooling, ducted vacuum to three points and an alarm. A fantastic outdoor room is a year-round retreat and a small pavilion is another sitting nook; both look over an ornamental riverstone bed and low-maintenance plantings. A 13,600-litre water tank with pump and extended double garage are other features on a block of about 1310 square metres.
Down a charming country lane, within minutes of the village and train station, this lovely old dual-level cottage on about 1881 square metres has character and whimsy to spare. A carpeted living room (with a mezzanine and vaulted timber-lined ceiling above) has a wood heater set against bricks. Terracotta-toned tiles anchor the dining meals and kitchen zone, and painted dado panels are a nice touch. The black and white kitchen is quite modern, with stainless-steel gas cooker and dishwasher. The main bedroom and a study (or fourth bedroom) are downstairs, as is a bathroom. Two more bedrooms, a children’s retreat, another living area and a bathroom occupy the top floor. Verandahs look out onto pretty gardens, and there are two road frontages, water tanks and a double carport.

Spacious, bright and light-filled, and on a vast block of about 1800 square metres, this modern abode in a sought-after estate will tempt families looking for space to spread out, in close proximity to all town services. The main bedroom, left of the entry hall, has a walk-in wardrobe and a large en suite with dual vanity basins and a spa. Four more bedrooms (with wardrobes) run down the left-hand side, close to the main bathroom, and separate toilet and laundry. An open lounge room-dining room is the other side of the entry and, further along, is the large, tiled family-meals area with wood heater and kitchen, which links to an outdoor entertainment zone. An abundance of timber cabinetry topped with charcoal laminate equip the kitchen, along with underbench oven, electric cooktop and dishwasher. The enormous grassed backyard has a garden shed and a paved driveway leading to a double garage.
In popular Jacksons Hill precinct, within a walk of Galaxy Land Park (a fab family playground) and nature trails, this classy house on about 834 square metres has many energy-efficient features – double-glazed windows, double-thickness plaster for noise reduction, extra insulation, two water tanks, a greywater system and a solar HWS. A one-off from a boutique builder, the house has polished concrete floors and pitched ceilings adding style, while the all-white decor bounces light around beautifully. The living hub (with wood heater) links two outdoor entertainment areas (one an expansive pergola), while the chic kitchen has a return island bench topped with stone and all the mod-cons. Four bedrooms share two smart bathrooms; there’s a separate toilet and a laundry with closet. Evaporative cooling, ducted vacuum, plantation shutters, a freestanding double garage and priceless views are other noteworthy ingredients of this fine property.

If ever Mother Nature gave birth to a house, it would look like this one. Constructed two years ago from handmade, compressed straw bales rendered with on-site yellow clay, “Little Wood” stands as a testament to what true artisanship can achieve. Using bygone building techniques gleaned from generations of family skills, the owner-builder sourced all timbers locally and milled them on site, re-leaded 100-year-old stained glass to add pops of interior colour and has re-purposed reclaimed materials everywhere. The amazing result will capture the hearts of creative types and, in particular, those who value sustainability and walking gently on the earth.

Auction: October 10 at noon On a lovely, lightly treed block of about 1.59 hectares, the house embodies earthiness and all the moods of timber, with local blackwood, messmate, cypress, blue atlas cedar, manna and peppermint gums and baltic pine (for ledge-and-brace doors) all making an appearances. Corrugated galvanised iron from a 100-year-old dairy forms most of the ceilings (others are in plywood, eschewing chemical-emitting plaster), and every doorway has a handmade blackwood sill. Beautiful blue-green tiles in the living room (under 4.5-metre ceiling) are handmade in Spain. The living room’s massive support beam has been snaffled from an old Puckapunyal barracks. All floor tiles are owner-made in terracotta and a soaring feature wall
and under the eaves have been treated to shiplapped cypress. There are a couple of nods to outsourcing – for example the Caesarstone-topped blackwood/leadlight vanity units; a Belling oven with gas cooktop; a single-drawer dishwasher; lovely, earthy fabric in window furnishings; and the rainbow feature tiles in both bathrooms. Of the three bedrooms, the main has a fitted walk-in wardrobe and a walk-in shower in the en suite. The main bathroom has a reclaimed clawfoot tub and incorporates a European laundry. Blackwood ladder-stairs from the living room head up to a mezzanine area. With double-glazing throughout, a 1.5kW solar system, 5kW inverter and straw-bale

insulation effect, the house carries a 7.2-star energy rating. A gigantic American barn houses a workshop, mezzanine storage and a wine storage room – and, tucked behind, a rustic studio with kitchenette, clawfoot bath, wood heater and TV/internet connection. A fenced vegie patch (with frog bog and adherence to permaculture principles), two storage sheds, a log cabin chook hotel, water tanks with 175,000-litre capacity, a one-megalitre dam (stocked with yabbies), dry riverbed landscaping, a barbecue area and handcrafted wood pizza oven are other delights at a property (incredibly) within five minutes of the train station. Sharks take out back-to-back flags as Tigers flounder It was a battle between the favourites and the team that came from nowhere, and it was the favourites on top at the end of the Riddell District Netball League’s B-grade grand final. Rupertswood entered the premiership match after losing only one game all year, and had the week off leading into Sunday’s grand final. Lancefield had to do it the hard way, having inched up through the finals from sixth spot. Two one-goal wins and an eight-goal victory over the more fancied Broadford in the preliminary final gave the Tigers a surprise grand final berth. Lancefield only gained finals contention in the last round of the season. Its dream of making it to the top didn’t come off on Sunday, as the Sharks showed why they are such a dominant force.
With an early lead, the Sharks ran away to their second successive B-grade premiership, 34-14. For Sharks’ coach Di McCormack the premiership is reward for all the hard work players put in over the year. The Sharks have lost only two games in the past two seasons. “What you can say about them is that they are outstanding,” McCormack said. “They work hard at training and worked on a lot of things behind the scenes to get here today. The average age of the team is just 16,” she said. McCormack was all praise for the opposition, coached by her close friend Alan Watson. “They have worked tremendously hard, and it shows the work Al has been doing at the club to get them from sixth and into a grand final.
“We had a lot more fitness and a lot stronger structures,” McCormack said. “Our defence put them under the pump.” Georgia Leonard was named best on court by the umpires. Emily Ktona and Hayley Matthews, who shot 16 goals, were also among the best. For the Tigers, Jessica Lallo shot 12 goals and was named their best players. McCormack said several players, including Ktona and Matthews, could easily make the move up into A-grade. “Em and Hayley … deserve to be up there, and Mon Neagle has taken her game to a whole other level this season.” View photos at starweekly.com.au Tara Murray

RIDDELL NETBALL Here’s a quick look at other results from the Riddell District Football Netball League senior grand final day at Romsey Park on Sunday. For match reports, including comments from the winning coaches and photos from all three games, go to starweekly.com.au/ sports/
Under-18.5 football
Rupertswood’s dominance of the under-18.5 competition continued as they easily accounted for Woodend-Hesket. The Hawks kicked the first three goals before the Sharks settled and had grabbed a 51-point lead by the main break. But the Sharks really got going in the second half, kicking 12 goals to six to win 25.13 (163)-11.6 (72). Bailee Revell won the Noel Rainey medal for best on ground for a performance that included eight goals. Jackson Berry and Luke Cannon were also among the best palyers. The win caps off an unbeaten season for the Sharks, who have now won the past two premierships.

Roos beat injury curse By Tara Murray It was a real team effort that carried Sunbury Kangaroos reserves to a second successive Riddell District Football League premiership. A total of 57 players pulled on the boots for the Kangaroos this season as they and their senior side struggled with injuries. As many as 10 reserves were playing in the seniors at times during the season, meaning the reserves had to go scouting for players. But everything came together on grand final day as the Kangaroos overturned a three- quarter time deficit to beat Diggers Rest 9.13 (67)-7.7 (49). It was the Burras’ first loss for the season. It was never going to be a high-scoring game after only two goals, both to the Burras, in the opening quarter. The Kangaroos, kicking with the wind, finally got on the board in the second quarter and four goals to none saw them lead by 14 points at half-time.
The second half was a repeat of the first, the Burras doing the early damage to get a lead before the Kangaroos came back at them. Five last-quarter goals ensured the Kangaroos were premiers again. Joeb Ploog was awarded the Tom Sankey medal for best on ground, while Brad Sluggett and Tom Evans were best for the Burras. For Kangaroos coach Wayne Meacham the win was as emotional as last year’s. “It’s amazing,” he said after the game. “For the year we’ve had, with 57 players in the reserves and seniors . . . we just had to keep playing everyone we could find. “I was calling people on Friday nights asking them to play. “But we kept winning, no matter who we brought in. “It’s a very simple game plan; our best player knows what our worst player is going to do and that’s what I’ve worked on all year.” Despite being down at the last break, Meacham was confident of a win.
36 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 22, 2015
“I’ve never seen a football team apply so much pressure all over the ground,” he said. “I knew we would outstay them. “[Diggers Rest] had been in front all year and knew what to do then but didn’t know what to do when behind. “It was about not losing our heads.” Meacham said he was lucky to get most of his regular players back for the finals. One person in the reserves’ premiership side did not intend to play this season: Meacham himself. “The boots are just about taped together,” he said. “I can’t take any more of this. We got a few players back towards the end of the year, so guys who had come of retirement to help us out were able to watch the grand final and enjoy it.” While Meacham’s brother, Chris, has stepped away from the senior coaching job, Meacham is looking to go for a three-peat with the reserves. “We’ll see what happens,” he said. Rupertswood are the undeniable queens of the under-19 netball competition after winning every game they’ve played in the first two years of the competition. They added a second premiership to the cabinet on Sunday, beating Riddell 23-16 in the grand final. The Sharks jumped out of the blocks with the first five goals and there was no coming back for Riddell from there. The Sharks dominated all around the court, with Michelle Cliffe, Eloise Freeman and Hannah Kempster converting in the ring. Pocket rocket Georgia Hellyer was named best on court for her midcourt work.
C-grade netball
A mix of youth and experience was the right combination for Riddell in C-grade. After finishing the season in fourth spot, the Bombers had to make the grand final the hard way. It included knocking off premiership favourites Rupertswood in the preliminary final. On Sunday, the Bombers proved way too strong for Melton Centrals, winning the grand final 30-13. The Bombers grabbed the first eight goals and continued their dominance for the rest of the game. The shooters made the most of their opportunities, while the defenders kept the Centrals to a shooting percentage of just 42. Bombers goal attack Tanisha Bardzinski was adjudged best on court.

Salt in an old wound for Lions By Tara Murray It was grand final heartache for Sunbury Lions’ A-grade side in the Ballarat Netball League on Saturday. In what was always going to be a tough task to roll unbeaten North Ballarat City, the Lions were left to rue a poor third quarter which ended their premiership dreams. The 15-8 term gave City a six-goal lead at three-quarter time to set up the 49-42 win. It was a second successive grand final loss for the Lions, but they didn’t give up Saturday’s clash without a fight. They got the margin back to four goals in the last quarter but could get no closer. The Lions even led by a goal at half time and Lions coach Adam Boldiston said he thought his side was in good shape at that point. Then it all started to go wrong. “The girls tried really hard and never gave up,” he said. “It just wasn’t our day. We had a lot of basic errors which we didn’t have in the last couple of finals. “You can’t afford to do that against a quality side like North Ballarat.” It was those errors in the third quarter that proved costly. “Ruth Smith was doing a lot of work but was missing her goals,” he said. “Kate Fletcher came on really well last week, but today she was off her game a bit. “They say the third quarter is the championship quarter and it kind of proved to be that way today.”

As he did earlier in the finals series, Boldiston threw his line around in the last quarter. “I was searching for answers,” he said. “Normally we’re really secure bringing the ball down the court and Chloe [Curran] normally finishes it off well, She was a bit nervy today. “We tried Abbey Healy [at goal attack]. I thought I had to try something as Ruth didn’t shoot well for us. “The change was working and we pegged a couple back, but then it started to fall away again so I had to change it back.” Defenders Jamie Clark and Rebecca Anstey were best for the Lions. Despite the grand final loss, Boldiston said there was a lot to look forward to with his squad. “As long as we can keep the core of the squad together we’re in a good place to build next year,” he said. “We have some good connections and we’ll look at what we need to add to the squad. I’d like to add a goal attack. But it wasn’t all bad news for the Lions, with the A-reserve side defeating Lake Wendouree 44-27 to secure back-to-back premierships and an unbeaten season. The C-grade side lost 29-19 to North Ballarat City in their grand final after winning the minor premiership.

Cool Cats left to yearn for next year’s gold Macedon fell at the last hurdle in its hunt for A-grade gold in the Riddell District Netball League grand final. After defeating Riddell in the semi-finals, the Cats were confident they could match it with the Bombers on Sunday, but it wasn’t to be. The Bombers proved too strong: 51-34. Cats’ coaches Karri Ambler and Kelly Nicholas were still proud of the efforts put in by their players. It’s no secret they had a disrupted season when coaches were switched mid-year. “The girls have done really well to get here after everything that happened in the middle of the year,” Ambler said. “The spirits have been really high and they’ve done their best. “Riddell were definitely determined and, credit to them, they won the game fair and square. We didn’t really bring our best.” For the first quarter and a half, the margin between the two sides was around the threegoal mark.
While the Bombers made sure Bec Colwell was having a hard time of it under the ring, it was proving just as hard for Bombers’ star shooter Mikaela Vaughan. The Cats decided to move their Victorian Netball League gaoler Kate McLeod out to goal defence to play on Vaughan, to try to match her height and reach. “I think she did more than enough on Mikaela,” Ambler said. “If you looked at her goaling, Kate had her most of the game “Christine Harris absolutely smashed it. “Tarryn Mackie did a fantastic job in the first final when we played against them and she would have outdone Christine that day. Unfortunately, today, it was reversed.” The Bombers’ experience started to show as the game wore on, and they slowly pushed the margin out. They led by eight goals at half-time and had extended that to 15 goals at the last change.
The Cats didn’t give up and threw everything at the Bombers. They switched players around and brought players off the bench to try to get the right match-ups – with no luck. “We had the options, so we thought we would give it go.” Nicholas said there were still lots of positives going forward. “The girls are still really young,” she said. “There were about three who hadn’t played A-grade finals before this season. “No one is over 30. “Kate is 30 and everyone else is younger. “Maddi Payne and Emmy Tebble are only 20,” Nicholas said. “They are an awesome group. “And we were saying that, out of the four teams, they have been the easiest for us coming into the club to coach. “They are very united, a really nice group.” Tara Murray
Bulldogs blown away in prelim Gisborne’s Bendigo Netball League season is over after a loss to Strathfieldsaye in the preliminary final on Saturday. After making it through the first two rounds of the finals by the barest of margins, it was no third time lucky for the Bulldogs. They trailed by one goal at quarter-time and five goals at the main break. Then the Storm turned it on, shooting 24 goals to nine in the second half to win 46-26. The Storm now play Golden Square in the grand final. It’s a second successive year the Bulldogs have exited the finals at the preliminary final stage.

Bombers fly to a turn at the top By Tara Murray After being the dominant team in the past two seasons, Riddell finally has a Riddell District Netball Association A-grade premiership to show for it. Having fallen at the final hurdle last season, the Bombers weren’t going to make the same mistake this year against Macedon. It was the Bombers’ show from midway through the second quarter. Lauren Close and Christine Harris, who suffered grand final heartache last year, set the tone early in the 51-34 win. Close was in everything at the defensive end while Harris was converting her teammates’ hard work down the court. For playing-coach Close, getting a good start was vital. “It’s fantastic and I can’t wipe the smile off
my face,” she said. “We talked before the game about coming out strong, which we didn’t do last grand final day. “That burnt in our bellies and we brought it on to the court.” Another key area was shutting down star Cats goaler Bec Colwell. “We really worked on our structures from last time we played them and what we did well,” Close said. “I came out into goal defence in the last bit of that game and it seemed to work. Danni [Davidson] could handle playing on Bec one on one. “We talked a lot about using our voices and connecting with each other in the ring. “We had to shut Bec down, that was our main goal.” Close paid credit to the Bombers’ mid-court players.

Their good hands made it hard for the Cats to move the ball into attack. A bonus for the Bombers was the experienced Lee Chicas taking to the court after suffering a calf injury in their preliminary final win over Rupertswood. “The physio gave her the all clear so we were rapt,” Close said. Harris was the game-high scorer with 34 goals from 47 attempts. “I had a bit of a chat to her about what some of the issues were the last time we played Macedon, “ Close said. “She stood her ground, which she’s good at … then she turns and shoots and gets them in.” Goal attack Mikaela Vaughan was named best on court by the umpires. The decision to move Vaughan from goal shooter to goal attack in the last part of the season was successful.
“We put the question into Macedon’s minds about whether they would move Kate McLeod out of goal keeper to play on Mikaela,” Close said. The Bombers stayed with the same line-up for three and a half quarters before bringing on Lauren Anglin and Elyce Carlyle for the final minutes. For Close, a grand final victory was a stark contrast to last season when she had to watch from the sidelines after knee surgery. “It was double heartache,” she said. “I did my knee and then I watched us lose a grand final. This feeling is amazing.” Despite tasting premiership success in her first year as coach, Close says it was anything but easy – to the extent she called on RDNL netball manager Kim Bailey for assistance. Burras nursing a ‘three-peat’ of heartaches Sunday’s grand final delivered another dose of heartache for Diggers Rest. A 10-point defeat by Romsey in the Riddell District Football League decider means the Burras have finished runners-up three years in a row, losing by a combined margin of just 35 points. Diggers Rest president Chris Payne described the 15.19 (109)-14.15 (99) loss as shattering. “Losing three grand finals in a row is hard to cop,” he said. “It’s quite devastating; what else can you say?” After beating Romsey in the semi-final two weeks earlier, the Burras went into Sunday’s match fresh from a week off. But the extended break was forgotten when the ball was bounced and defending champions Romsey made the better start. The Redbacks dominated the contest out of
the middle, claiming a number of key centre clearance breaks and easily winning the inside-50 count. The margin was 25 points by quarter-time and goals from Phillip Lobb, Mitchell Farmer and Bradley Mitchell made it 39. Payne said after the match it had been frustrating to see his team’s errors turn into quick goals for the Redbacks. “The guys always give 100 per cent. No one will ever not give it their best,” he said. “It comes down to getting our structures right, the guys being where they have to be, and when they have to be there. “At times today we weren’t there for those possessions and we got exposed. “When that happens, it’s going to be pretty hard to win the game.” Midway through the second term, the
Burras were able to fight their way back into the contest. Diggers Rest began wresting back control of the ball through the middle of the ground and was more precise with its kicking coming out of the defensive 50. It resulted in the Burras booting the next six goals to cut the margin to just two points early in the third term. “We came back really strongly and that’s all you can ask,” Payne said. “You need to show a bit of ticker and do the right thing as a team. It’s a team that wins the grand final, not individuals.” Just when it looked as though a comeback win was on the cards, Romsey regrouped. With Stephen Burlak causing havoc up forward, the Redbacks went on a run and kicked the final six goals of the third term to extend the margin to a game-high 41 points.
For Diggers Rest to win, everything had to go right for the Burras in the fourth term and it started in the best possible fashion. Jason Williams took control of his side’s 50-metre arc, kicking three of the quarter’s first four goals. He added a fourth 15 minutes later and with eight minutes remaining the margin had been sliced to 14 points. The Burras were unable to land the killer blow and although Romsey failed to kick any more goals, it did enough to win. “We have some great partners on board at our club and we have some great players, but it doesn’t matter if you’re undefeated during the year or if you finish sixth, getting to that grand final is all that matters,” Payne said. Liam Twomey
Redbacks pin up another flag By Tara Murray Romsey has been written off many times this season by many keen observers of the Riddell District Football League. First time was in pre-season when they lost a number of players from last year’s premiership side. It happened again when they were thrashed by Riddell in the middle of the year, and again after they lost to Diggers Rest in a semi-final two weeks ago. But, on Sunday, the Redbacks proved the pundits wrong, securing a second successive premiership in their defeat of Diggers Rest, 15.19 (109)-14.15 (99). Redbacks’ coach Dean Helmers said he didn’t have the same feeling walking onto the ground as he did before last year’s game “It was not our aim at the start of the year to win the premiership,” he admitted after the new triumph. “We filled our side this year with lots of local kids. “When I turned up to the game, I thought if we got done, I’d be disappointed but I’d accept it and understand why,” Helmers said. “Last year, there was no way I could afford to lose.”
The Redbacks used the breeze early and led by as much as 39 points in the second quarter, seemingly headed for an easy win. Then the Burras got going, reducing the margin to six points when Luke Smailes kicked the first goal of the third term. The Redbacks hit back through an unlikely source: co-captain Steve Burlak. “You always have to have something up your sleeve,” Helmers said. “Full credit to our back line; they were doing a good enough job [that I could move Steve forward]. He had an immediate impact and kicked two goals; three goals for the game.” There was still another twist in the story when the Burras staged another comeback, but the final margin of 10 points was the closest they would get this time. “I toyed with the idea of going an extra man in defence, but I had confidence in the boys and we held our nerve to make [the opposition] slow it down a bit,” Helmers said. “Diggers were really up for that last quarter and didn’t want to die wondering; they threw everything at us. I was asking, ‘How long [to go], how long?’.” For the Redbacks, the grand final proved they had fielded their best side in a year interrupted

by injures and lack of numbers at training. “When they play their best footy, they are hard to stop, and I needed an extra commitment from them to get them to here,” Helmers said. “It shows the rewards are there if you put in the work. It was a matter of them believing it, and the proof is in the pudding. “That’s probably the best team we’ve had all year – no disrespect to the others who played earlier. “We’ve played a lot of kids this year and they’re getting better and better.”
Helmers, who is still weighing up his coaching future, had not only the game to worry about on Sunday but also his heavily pregnant wife Nicola. “She’s 39 weeks and due today or tomorrow,” Helmers said. “We were a little bit worried she would go into labour today. All week we’ve been thinking, please don’t go on the grand final day. I was going with her [if she had gone into labour] – I have to spend the rest of my life with her.” Photo gallery at starweekly.com.au

MOTOR Kit, colours a Fabia combination “All things bright and beautiful” can imply twee but in the case of the new Skoda Fabia it conveys a measure of style and substance. In a bid to attract buyers who like to stand out from the crowd, the Czech car maker has gone to some lengths to offer kit and colours to do just that. With a $15,999 entry level price, there is plenty of room to make an automotive statement without flooding the bank with red. But that is only part of the story. As well as a long shopping list of options, the new Fabia, which comes as a hatchback and wagon, features a choice of two efficient petrol engines and an eye-watering range of in-car technology in the form of front assist with city emergency brake, plus smartlink smartphone connectivity including Apple carplay and Android auto and rear-parking sensors. A 1.2-litre 66TSI engine is mated with a five-speed manual transmission, while a similar-sized higher output 81TSI petrol engine is paired with a seven-speed DSG transmission. Both come up with claimed 4.8 litres per 100 kilometres fuel economy thanks to a start /stop system and brake energy recuperation. They have a Euro 6 emission rating. Both hatch and wagon exhibit the latest Skoda design thinking that debuted in the new Octavia, with the compact Fabia reaching new heights in cargo carrying capacity – 1125 litres of storage space with the rear seat backs folded for the hatch, and 1370 litres for the wagon – and leaving many sports utility vehicles

lagging. Top of the class in European NCAP crash tests, the new Fabia is fitted standard with the latest technology in front assist with the city emergency braking function across the range. The system uses a radar sensor to continually
measure the distance to traffic ahead. Whenever the distance is too small, front assist goes to work with audio and visual warnings followed by automatic emergency stopping when necessary. While the third generation Skoda Fabia
announces its arrival with sporty proportions, it is the capacity for owners to put their own stamp on the vehicle through many sharp colours and unique features that will attract many buyers. It can be customised inside and out. With the colour concept option, customers can choose between four colours – silver, white, black or red – for the roof, including A-pillars, mirror housings and 16-inch alloy wheels. Six body colours are available, including standard candy white and corrida red; and metallic race blue, magic black, quartz grey and moon white. A vibrant sprint yellow and rally green metallic are available through colour concept. A bespoke interior of quality fit and finish can call on an array of colours and their combinations. The Bolero infotainment system has a sharp 6.5-inch TFT colour display and a touchscreen, while six speakers deliver clear, balanced audio reproduction. As well as front assist with integrated city emergency brake function, the new Fabia features the third generation of multi-collision brake system, which reduces the risk of the vehicle becoming involved in a subsequent collision following an accident. The new Fabia is a neat compact car at a competitive entry-level price with the capacity to spec it up to suit individual owners with a range of packages. A range of warranty packages are also available. Details: www.skoda.com.au

No kinks in the super Cooper The Mini Cooper was the original pocket-racer and, while its architect John Cooper is no longer with us, son Mike is still involved in the road-going Minis that bear his father’s initials, JCW – John Cooper Works. Coopers have been the high-performance versions of the Mini range for many years and hold a special place in the minds of all Mini enthusiasts, not just those into fast cars. I recently spent a lot of time chatting, eating and, of course, driving the just-released third generation JCW Mini at the Phillip Island racetrack as well as on interesting country roads on our way back to Melbourne. The latest JCW Mini uses a 2.0-litre turbo-charged engine that produces 170 kW of power and 320 Nm of torque, the biggestever numbers. Best of all, top torque is spread all the way across the rev range, from 1250 to 4800, with a hefty punch still on offer until you approach the sixes. Peak power is reached at 5200 rpm and continues until 6000 rpm, so there’s fun under your foot all the time. At the island, the turbo-charged engine just kept on pulling, and 230km/h was on the dial before we had to brake for the scary high-speed kink that signals the end of the long downhill straight. Huge Brembo brakes haul off speed very promptly and, even at Phillip Island with its ultra-fast straights and hard stops, never had us anywhere near brake fade. Electronic stability control and a clever electronic differential lock play their part in reducing lap times. Run-flat tyres have improved over the years, but are still not as smooth as conventional tyres, and the sporting 18-inch tyres (Dunlop

hands on a manual. Minis are all about style, and the JCW takes that route in its reshaping when compared with the standard Cooper S. Probably the most instantly noticeable change is the addition of a red bar across the centre of the grille. Larger cooling slots in the lower front, including one for an auxiliary radiator, make an engineering statement but mean there’s no space for fog lights. Reshaped door sills are part of the aerodynamic package, and a large rear wing at roof level adds downforce. Grey-coloured spats around the wheel arches further increase the
on some of our review cars, Continental on others) created quite a bit of road noise on the coarse-chip surfaces traversed on the open road. All our test cars had six-speed automatic transmissions, as six-speed manuals won’t be getting to the docks downunder until September or October. Much as we love driving manuals in high-performance machines, we have to admit the automatic JCWs are quicker and more economical than manuals. Paddle shifters do give you full control over gear changes – but we can’t wait to get our
positive statement made by the Mini. Sports seats are exactly as we like them: good side grip, but not so deep as to make entry and exit a pain. BMW’s topline Professional Navigation system is installed, and infotainment is provided by a tuner that has DAB+ added to the usual station options. Mini by JCW has a slightly old-fashioned head-up display, which relies on a small screen sitting in the top of the dash. There’s nothing old-fashioned about the range of information it provides, though.
