Milestone for a marvel

(Damjan Janevski)

Sunbury’s oldest resident, Mary Whitehurst, turned 110 last week, celebrating her extraordinary milestone at Riddell Gardens Aged Care centre in Sunbury, where she lives. The long-time Riddells Creek resident was president of the Riddells Creek Senior Citizens’ Club for 20 years and is an accomplished pianist. She played the organ at Sunbury Methodist Church for many years and is still the hit of Friday afternoons’ happy hour at the centre, leading the piano singalongs. McEwen MP Rob Mitchell sent special birthday wishes to Mary from Parliament, saying she now joins the ranks of Australia’s ‘super-centenarians’. “There have only ever been 26 people in Australia who have reached that age,” Mr Mitchell said. “Mrs Whitehurst, you are definitely on the money when you remind us that we have to try and look at the good things in life … you go out the next day and try to do better.” Esther Lauaki

Sunbury split dropped Sunbury will remain a part of the City of Hume – at least for now – after the state government accepted independent advice to abandon the controversial split. Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins has accepted the advice of the independent transition auditors appointed to examine the proposal. “The auditors’ report clearly shows the proposed split would come at a significant

financial cost to residents,” she said. “We supported Sunbury out of Hume in good faith that the previous Liberal government had done the work to ensure a fair outcome for local residents. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case.” But Opposition Leader Matthew Guy called the decision “a kick in the teeth for Sunbury” and pledged to establish the council if elected in 2018. “Less than 12 months ago the Labor government held hand to heart and promised

to create the city of Sunbury,” he said. “One of the first acts of my government will be to establish the City of Sunbury.” Former Supreme Court judge Frank Vincent and John Watson, chair of Brimbank’s administrators, found the split should be scrapped because of long-term and significant financial impact on Sunbury residents. Auditors found the split would increase council rates by 14 per cent, reduce services significantly and create an unviable, unsustainable council.

They also found the process lacked adequate community consultation and failed to explain the detrimental impact on residents. Hume mayor Adem Atmaca said the announcement would allow the council to plan for the future with greater clarity. Broadmeadows Progress Association associate secretary Sonja Rutherford said the group was pleased with the news. “The issue can now be put to rest and will stop diverting attention away from other important projects that need to be addressed,” she said.

Cops hot on Lancefield looting By Esther Lauaki Police are ramping up patrols around properties destroyed by the Lancefield bushfires amid concerns of looters sifting through the ruins. Authorities confirmed that five houses, 19 sheds, two vehicles, farm equipment and many kilometres of fencing were scorched when fires ripped through more than 3100 hectares of land earlier this month. The fires started when a planned burn jumped containment lines on AFL grand final day, October 3.

Inspector Ryan Irwin, of Woodend police, said there had been just one report of suspicious behaviour since the flames subsided. “It’s been raised at some of the community meetings that residents are worried about people sifting around up there, looking for machinery or belongings that might have been left behind by the fire,” he said. “There’s always a risk in situations such as this that looting might occur, but we haven’t had any reports of it happening at this stage. We had one report of a vehicle moving around the area when it shouldn’t have been,

but police were on the scene pretty quickly and resolved the issue. “We want to reassure residents that police are patrolling the area and making sure that no one is acting suspiciously.” Inspector Irwin said the roads had been reopened, but police were still performing regular checks to ensure that only residents were travelling in an out of the area. An ongoing investigation by an independent panel was launched this month as the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning comes under scrutiny for the

planned burn that got out of control. Environment Minister Lisa Neville said last week that nothing was “off the table” in the panel’s work. “The investigation team will be on the ground, collecting data, to assist them in being able to deal with the terms of reference we’ve given them – how the fire started, was it the right conditions, how it was managed once it was under way and how community was engaged in process.” The panel’s findings are scheduled to be released in November.

Man dead after hit and run

More than 200 dog lovers and their four-legged friends will be out for a stroll at Paws in the Park next week. Paws in the Park typically draws about 250 participants and their pets to the family event, which kicks off at Gisborne Veterinary Clinic on November 8. Practice manager Travis Grieve says the event has grown substantially in nine years. “Paws in the Park started in October 2006 with about 80 participants and their dogs turning up for the morning,” he said. “The initial reasoning in setting the event up was to help promote correct pet health in the Macedon Ranges shire and raise funds for the various not-for-profit organisations. “Over the past 10 years, the event has been organised by the Gisborne Veterinary Clinic’s staff, with many local businesses donating their time or products for various aspects of the walk,” Mr Grieve said. The day’s activities will include information stalls set up by the Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network and Seeing Eye Dogs Australia, pet photo booths, raffles, entertainment and food. Dental checks and nail trimming will also be offered by vets from the Gisborne clinic for a gold coin donation. Mr Grieve said Paws in the Park had raised as much as $22,000 in the past. “The ultimate goal for the future of this event is to grow the day, to incorporate many different aspects of the human-animal bond,” Mr Grieve said. “And also create a platform for promoting best animal care and awareness of the plight of wildlife surrounding our communities.” Registrations open at 9am for a 10am start. A 25-year-old Gisborne man died at the scene of a hit and run in Taylors Lakes on Saturday involving an allegedly stolen car. The man was the sole occupant of a Toyota Corolla, hit by a black Audi after it allegedly sped through a red light about 1am Saturday at the intersection of Melton Highway and Kings Road. A 17-year-old from Fawkner and a 17-year-old from Broadmeadows were scheduled to appear in court yesterday charged with a range of offences including culpable driving, fail to stop, fail to assist, burglary and theft of a motor vehicle. Police were yesterday still seeking a third man who was also believed to be in the Audi when it crashed. The occupants allegedly fled the scene, but were later caught by police. Investigators believe the Audi was travelling south on Kings Road about 1am when it careered through the intersection. A motorbike travelling through the intersection became wedged under the vehicle but the rider jumped free from the accident and was left unscathed. Jaiden Russell told Channel 7 he was facing the crash and just avoided the Audi before it landed on his bike, with the other car, the white Toyota Corolla, spinning just a metre away from him. Victoria Police Detective Senior Sergeant Brad McArthur said Mr Russell would not have survived the crash had he not jumped off the bike. Police have asked anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www. crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Sunbury not on road priority list By Esther Lauaki Sunbury’s notorious Horne Street and Gap Road intersection, and the nearby level crossing, are not a priority, the latest VicRoads’ level crossing report states. The town’s most dangerous intersection missed out on a mention in VicRoads’ priority list of dangerous level crossings of metropolitan Melbourne, which was released on October 16. About 27,000 vehicles travel on Horne Street each day, and 18,000 on Gap Road. Vehicle numbers, combined with boomgates at the level crossing 200 metres south of the intersection, result in significant traffic disruptions in the

town centre, especially during school and work peak hours. The Horne Street-Gap Road intersection was counted among Victoria’s top 10 traffic hot spots in RACV’s biennial survey earlier this year. Road level crossing removals at Caulfield, Frankston and Glen Waverley took highest priority in the VicRoads report. As reported in Star Weekly recently, recently Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Bernie Finn was vocal in criticising Labor government ministers over their inaction on road projects and planning for Sunbury. ‘‘This government is kicking Sunbury from pillar to post, and it must stop,’’

‘‘

The government is kicking Sunbury from pillar - Bernie Finn to post

’’

Mr Finn said. ‘‘I ask the Premier … stop the war on Sunbury.’’ A spokesman for Roads Minister Luke Donnellan denied there had been indecision about the Sunbury intersection, pointing to a $15,000 planning study that began in June. ‘‘Data will be used in consultation with residents and businesses, as well as Hume council, to determine the best solution,” the

spokesman said. “[This] may include traffic lights.’’ Sunbury Residents Association president Bernie O’Farrell says residents will continue to call for traffic lights at the intersection. “With the population growth, the congestion that occurs is getting worse,” Mr O’Farrell said. “That’s why it needs to have treatment sooner rather than later.” He said there was also a need for new traffic measures to deal with Gap Road’s intersection with Riddell Road. This request was first put in by the residents’ association more than a decade ago, Mr O’Farrell said.

‘Classics’ up in flames A classic Mercedes-Benz and an AustinHealey were destroyed in a fire last week. Woodend CFA volunteers arrived to find the garage of a Mt Macedon Road property engulfed in flames in the early hours of Thursday, October 19. Four appliances from Woodend and one from Macedon were called to the address, with 15 volunteers working to get the blaze under control. Woodend CFA captain Mick Christie said the garage was close to three units, but no residents were home at the time of the fire. “Our initial attack was to protect exposures before quickly bringing the blaze under control,” he said. “When the smoke settled we discovered two expensive classic cars had been destroyed in the fire.

“At this stage, the fire is still under investigation. “Both cars were damaged almost beyond recognition. “They would have been worth quite a bit. The investigation into the cause of the fire and where it might have started is ongoing. “Thankfully, nobody was home in the nearby flats and no one was harmed.” Esther Lauaki

Minister challenged over V/Line By Esther Lauaki Liberal MP Bernie Finn has challenged Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan to front next week’s community meeting and explain the government’s backflip over V/Line services to Sunbury. Public Transport Victoria will host the meeting at Sunbury Aquatic and Leisure Centre on October 28, when residents can discuss restrictions that bar Sunbury commuters from Bendigo-bound V/Line trains – the cause of ongoing angst for the travellers. Mr Finn, a Bulla resident, said the minister should attend

the meeting to “explain personally to locals why she is stripping them of their V/Line service” when new timetables come into force next January. “The minister is aware of the anger that continues to be displayed by Sunbury residents at the government’s decision to backflip on a previous Labor promise to allow V/Line to continue servicing Sunbury,” he told Parliament last Tuesday. “I will be one of many local residents attending a community meeting in Sunbury next Wednesday night. The meeting will be addressed by Public Transport Victoria

officials, but that’s not good enough. The minister has the power to stop this outrageous decision,” Mr Finn said. “Sunbury train travellers want to hear from her. They want the chicken, not the tail feathers.” Mr Finn has slammed ministers in recent weeks over what he said was a lack of action on vital road projects in the area. He added that

preventing commuters from catching V/Line trains was part of a broader agenda targeting Sunbury. Sunbury MP Josh Bull, who will attend next week’s meeting, said the feedback received from attendees would be considered by Public Transport Victoria in planning future train and bus services. “The state government is listening to the community and investing in the major public transport infrastructure Victoria needs to get people home safer and sooner,” Mr Bull said. Recovery taken in stride As a 26-year-old personal trainer who went to great lengths to keep herself in top shape, Gisborne’s Chloe Farrugia didn’t seem like the kind of person at risk of having a stroke. Yet Ms Farrugia had two strokes within two months last year, putting her in a wheelchair and leading to extensive rehabilitation. ‘‘I was about to get in the shower and I had tingles in my left arm,’’ the mother of two says of the first stroke. ‘‘I lost feeling in that arm and I couldn’t walk. My husband put me to bed. He noticed my face had drooped and I was dribbling and couldn’t talk, so he called an ambulance.’’ Mr Farrugia’s quick thinking likely saved his wife’s life. Doctors treating Ms Farrugia after her second stroke found a problem with her heart, which meant surgery. ‘‘I’m living on a high dosage of medication, but other than that I’m

doing OK,’’ Ms Farrugia says. ‘‘There’s been a lot of rehab … I’ve been to three different rehab centres, but now I just want to help save other people’s lives.’’ Next month, the Farrugias plan to run 50 kilometres through bushland to raise money and awareness for the Stroke Foundation. Ms Farrugia says stroke is far more common than many people realise, and is one of Australia’s biggest killers and a leading cause of disability. ‘‘People don’t think it can happen to fit and healthy people, but it does,’’ she says. Ms Farrugia says people should learn the ‘FAST’ method so they know the signs of stroke – a drooping Face, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call triple-0. To donate, visit goo.gl/hkrRWz. Hume councillor Jack Ogilvie turned out in a top hat and tux to a charity ball that raised money to aid his recovery from a stroke. Organising committee spokesman Adam Mizzi said Cr Ogilvie, who is undergoing rehabilitation, had a wonderful night at the Pitruzzello Estate on October 17. A stroke on July 6 paralysed the Sunbury-based councillor on his left side. “His wife Lesley said the money we raised would make Jack’s care that much easier,” Mr Mizzi said.

Riding for renewables Energy-conscious cyclists will strap on their helmets at a Ride for Renewables event this weekend. The 15-kilometre ride on October 31 kicks off from the Black Forest timber mill near Woodend, heading for the site that locals propose for three wind turbines. Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group hosts the annual Ride for Renewables to promote renewable energy in the region, including a large, government-funded solar panel project at the Woodend timber mill and a community wind farm. The group hosts events and practical activities that seed sustainable living initiatives around the shire. Group president Ralf Thesing says the ride is

a chance for people to show their support for the two projects under way. “These projects have been several years in the making, ” he said. “We want to install more solar panels on more homes.” The proposed wind turbine project could generate enough power for up to 4500 homes – enough for Woodend, Macedon and Mount Macedon, he said. Cyclists will need a water bottle, snacks, sunscreen, any medications, a high-visibility vest and comfortable clothing and helmets, Mr Thesing said. Registration and briefing are at 10am for an 11am start. www.mrsgonline.org.au/ride-4-renewables Esther Lauaki

Fire-wise, and ready Sunbury residents have the chance to be more prepared when natural disasters strike, thanks to Australia Post. Sunbury’s State Emergency Service unit was awarded $5025 in the latest round of Our Neighbourhood grants. The Our Neighbourhood Trust is a charitable fund, whose donations come from Australia Post workers and customers, and from the wider community, to support local projects. Sunbury SES will fund community education sessions to help residents prepare and respond to natural disasters in a safe, organised way. “This Our Neighbourhood community grant will allow Sunbury SES volunteers to reach the communities we serve in new, engaging and interactive ways,” SES spokesman Jarrod Bell said. “We want to ensure those we serve can access and understand information that will strengthen their preparation and response

capabilities, and their resilience to natural disasters and emergency situations.” Australia Post chief executive Ahmed Fahour said the grants program was created to recognise the important role smaller charities and community groups play in bringing people together and strengthening communities. “Every year we’re inspired by the efforts of so many community groups with a genuine passion for making their neighbourhoods the best they can be,” Mr Fahour said. “We’re thrilled to announce this year’s successful organisations and congratulate them on the positive impact they’re having in their local communities.” Our Neighbourhood community grants are awarded on projects’ community inclusion and promotion of disaster preparation. As well, there would be a giant swing in place of the damaged flying fox, and a nature trail. “We’re doing all we can to make sure the camp is safe for the kids to come back.” It is still not certain whether those affected by the fires will be compensated, after what was a planned burn destroyed 3100 hectares of land and five homes.

Summer camps for as many as 800 youngsters have been postponed as the owners of the fire-ravaged Weekaway Recreational Camp near Lancefield work to get it up and running again. Charlotte Burns, who runs the Kitchenhams Lane camp, said while buildings had not been damaged, most of the 21 hectares of bushland on the property had been burnt out by the recent fires. “The first school group we had in after the fires was sent home after just three hours because it

was just not safe for the kids,” Mrs Burns said. Ten bookings for the coming months had now been cancelled because of the bushfire damage. “We’re working in conjunction with other camps to relocate the kids so they don’t miss out on a camping experience this summer. “We’re getting it safe enough for reopening, and that involves a lot of work ahead of us. “When a tree is affected by fire, that tree is no longer deemed safe,” Mrs Burns said. “It requires an arborist to come in and check it; either remove it or cut it back.” Arborists have been busy around the area, but the long process of dealing with so many

Voices rising against violence By Esther Lauaki Sports clubs, schools, community groups and businesses across the Macedon Ranges will join forces in the shire’s latest anti-violence campaign. The campaign comes in the lead-up to White Ribbon Day on November 25 and supports the ongoing Royal Commission into Family Violence. VicHealth cites violence as the biggest cause of injury or death for women aged 18 to 45. Research also shows one in three Australian

women will experience physical violence and one in five will experience sexual assault in her lifetime. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas called on the public to join the Say No to Family Violence campaign, which raises awareness of gender issues attached to family violence. Participating groups display signs and banners declaring their support. “While family violence can happen to everyone, we know women are the overwhelming victims of this violence and men are the perpetrators,” Ms Thomas said.

She said the campaign aimed to send a clear message that “violence will not be tolerated in our community”. “Through the work of our courageous Australian of the Year, Rosie Batty, and the Royal Commission, women are starting to feel empowered to stand up and speak out about this insidious problem,” Ms Thomas said. “I want to support those women and their children and show them that our community is on their side. “We welcome any club, school, community group or business to get involved,” Ms Thomas

said. “I encourage all groups in the community to show leadership and stand together with me on this important issue.” A community forum will be held at Kyneton Secondary College on December 4, at which Fiona Richardson, Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence, will lead a panel discussion. A Facebook page, Macedon Says No to Family Violence, has also been set up. The Royal Commission into Family Violence is due to table its recommendations in State Parliament next February.

Stage garden blossoms Centre of Music and Arts, says the show still holds a special place in his heart. “It’s a beautiful show, which has a very different focus to the book,” he says. “It takes a gorgeous little story and delves deeper into the characters’ background and into different issues. “The music is just beautiful. It’s classical music … that was popular in the past.” Ireland says the cast is brimming with talent. “Eadie Milne, who plays Colin Craven, is only 10 years old but is one of the most talented young performers I’ve worked with, and Madison Galea, who plays Mary Lennox, is also a little star. Final flourishes are being added to the set, and rehearsals are under way, in the lead-up to opening night of The Secret Garden at Sunbury. The Boilerhouse Theatre Company’s latest production hits the stage on November 6, with seven shows scheduled over three weekends. The Secret Garden, a musical based on a 1911 novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, follows Mary Lennox, an English girl born and raised in India, whose life is thrown into disarray when she’s orphaned by a cholera outbreak and shipped off to live with her reclusive uncle Archibald in his haunted manor. The show focuses on Mary’s growth from a spoilt, troubled, bad-tempered child into a determined, independent young girl, whose stubborn hard work and faith helps bring a broken family back together. The hook Anzac Appeal tally doubled this year

RSL remembers and gives thanks K

yneton RSL sub-branch has plenty of reason to celebrate with the near doubling of last year’s funds raised for the 2015 ANZAC Appeal. “We’ve really lifted the bar again this year,” says president Graeme Day. “We raised more than $16,000, and this played a significant part in reaching the state’s total tally of more than $5 million. “Kyneton RSL would like to thank sincerely the people of Kyneton for this record-breaking result, a culmination of extraordinary efforts made by members

and other volunteers, in particular the Red Cross ladies, who tirelessly manned fundraising locations throughout Kyneton.” Funds raised throughout the appeal enable the RSL to fulfil its primary role of supporting current and former servicemen and women and their families when in need. This support takes many forms – supplying mobility aids, garden and house maintenance, rental and utilities assistance. The ANZAC Appeal helps thousands of veterans and their families around Victoria. Needs vary, but the result is the

same – being there to support current and ex-servicemen and women and their families when they need it most. Mr Day acknowledges the exceptional efforts of all volunteers and locals who once again supported the ANZAC Appeal, reflecting the generous spirit of the Kyneton community. “As we now approach Remembrance Day, RSL appeals organisers at all sub-branches around Victoria are gearing up for the annual Poppy Appeal,” he says. “Kyneton RSL sub-branch is ready for this year’s

Poppy Appeal, with committed volunteers set on making it a success.” As with the ANZAC Appeal, all monies from the Poppy Appeal help current and former Victorian servicemen and women. Moving soon, with more hi-tech equipment

Updated technology helps Lake Imaging keep service standards high. (Supplied)

Local check point for all-over health then, there have been many versions of updated technology. CT scans performed on equipment currently at Lake Imaging take an average of 15 seconds per body region, and have a much lower radiation dose than previous generation scanners that could take anywhere up to five minutes to scan one area of the body. Understanding the importance of making high quality imaging accessible and affordable locally, Lake Imaging bulk bills all patients referred for CT imaging at

its Sunbury, Melton and Caroline Springs practices. Maintaining its commitment to providing access to affordable, high quality imaging, in early 2016 Lake Imaging Sunbury will be relocating to a new home in central Sunbury. This will enable it to install a new fleet of equipment, including the latest version of CT technology, providing patients with even faster scan times as well as increasing the range of CT examinations. The new site will also see the

introduction of MRIs for the first time in Sunbury. are in the process of carrying out a facelift on their shop, another way of taking the business into the future. This clever duo has plenty more strings to the bow, too. They provide shirt laundering services; drapery and curtain cleaning; treatments for suede and leather; and blanket, doona and underlay cleaning.

They even have a work-wear rental service which is a cracker for butchers who can rent their coats and aprons and have them regularly cleaned. Commercial-use dust control mats are also available for rent – and company logos can be applied. And just to finish things off, there’s also a repair and alteration service.

To celebrate new management, Luke and Matthew will press and clean five shirts for just $16.50. Master Dry Cleaners, 73a O’Shanassy Street, Sunbury. Opens 7am-5:30pm Monday-Friday and 8am-1pm Saturday. Inquiries: 9744 3245 or matthew@hydesqualitydrycleaners.com.au

he bride’s big day has come and gone and it’s now time to get on with the practicality of carefully storing the treasured dress. The first thing needing attention is getting the dress dry cleaned by a top-notch professional so future generations won’t find the mud still clinging to the hem and that small spot caused by a dropped slice of wedding cake. This is where new co-owners Luke Hudson and Matthew Hyde of Master Dry Cleaners in Sunbury come in. Luke is a third-generation member of the Hudson family who has owned and operated the dry cleaning business for more than 60 years. He’s the Victorian delegate for the national board of Dry Cleaning Institute of Australia. Matthew, the Victorian president of the Dry Cleaning Institute of Australia, has clocked up more than 28 years in the dry cleaning business and, in 2005, was named Victorian Dry Cleaner of the Year. He also won the Innovations and Savings Initiatives award in 2013. With this duo recently joining forces and taking ownership of the business, it’s certain your wedding dress will be safe in expert hands. And, as Matthew says, they now use the latest technology to get the best possible results. “We’re about being at the cutting edge of dry cleaning, taking our business into the 21st century while keeping the old-fashioned service values held dear for so many years,” Matthew says. “One example is our use of the latest in Japanese pressing technology. Business shirts will never look crisper, pants more sharp or curtains more crease-free.” As part of officially declaring their partnership recently, Luke and Matthew

here’s very little Simon Zammit doesn’t know about floating floors. In fact, he claims to be a fanatic. He also happens to be the owner of Bespoke Floating Floors and has a crew dedicated to this product like few others. Just ask Ian Widrose, a former client who was so impressed with his new floor, he joined Simon in his budding venture. Could that be the ultimate testimonial? “I guess I am a fanatic,” says Simon. “And that comes with understanding that helping customers make decisions about the type of flooring that best suits their house and their budget is very important. “We like to experience for ourselves the character of a customer’s house, so we visit. We take the time to listen carefully because our goal is to give them the look they ultimately want to achieve. “I guess I can have some strong opinions about that, but I have 15 years’ knowledge to offer and just love a happy customer.” Simon has been servicing the local towns for the past 10 years, installing quality flooring. Style sets the scene for a new career A

t a loss after a serious car accident, a long recovery, the loss of her job, a broken relationship and the birth of her son, Benji, Katie Hamilton found her feet again, and returned to her original passion in life – hairdressing. “It was when I stumbled upon Auss-One Training and Education, a governmentaccredited training organisation for the hair and beauty industry, that I found my way back to a fantastic life,” Katie says. “During my amazing training towards my certificate III in hairdressing, I felt my confidence grow. After qualifying, I applied for a load of jobs, but was getting nowhere. “When Auss-One gave me a chance to operate my own hairdressing business at their college – as the first beneficiary in their Youth in Business project – I felt like I was back at home,” Katie says. “My original trainers are still my mentors and, more than that, they’re friends. Now I have my own clients, who are impressed with the atmosphere of my business and the standard of services I provide.” Auss-One (formerly College of Hair and Beauty) began when it was realised that hair and beauty trainees need lots of support and life skills learnt in a nurturing environment. Owner Nelson Lopera explains that, along with the name change, there’s also been a new clarity of vision. “We provide students with an interactive, visual and fun training experience. From management through to trainers and assessors, we’ve had a staff change-up. They are totally up to date with industry skills and knowledge, and create training to deliver the best outcomes,” says Nelson. “We’ve also gone through a revamp, with a new look and feel reflecting our culture of

success. Our new hairdressing and beauty kits have on-trend equipment and renowned products (Goldwell, Algology Paint Box and Planet Nails); and use leading-edge training systems, such as Heads Up 4 Skills.” There’s a smorgasbord of change at Auss-One, such as the introduction of its Youth in Business program (which Katie tapped into), which provides aspiring business owners with one-on-one mentoring that may culminate in running their own business within the college. New training hours and course structures are in place, there’s an in-college nutritional bar, free to students, and barbering skills training is on its way. “We also have a year’s end graduation event called ‘Runway Show’, which demonstrates to local industry that we’re a hub of employable talents that will bring value to their own businesses.” Students are given a theme for Runway Show and work in teams to show their competencies in various fields. It showcases skills, creativity and ability to work in a team to local hair and beauty business owners, as well as families, friends and trainers. The event recognises their accreditation in their industry. This year’s Runway Show will be held Saturday November 28 6:30-8:30pm. The event is open to the public at a cost of $10 a person. ore than 30 years after opening his first restaurant, Italia Pizza in Mill Park, Gaetano Caruana has put an ‘h’ in his business name in honour of his first granddaughter, Tahlia. Not only is the name change a tribute to Tahlia, it also speaks of the evolution of Gaetano’s career. After Mill Park, he ran a string of successful restaurants, including Little Tony’s in Clifton Hill, before becoming a Sunbury-ite. Gaetano ran La Porchetta in Sunbury for 15 years and has now renamed the business Itahlia Restaurant. This vibrant eatery (co-owned with son-in law David, father of Tahlia) remains true to its Italian roots, with an updated menu that features new selections and lower prices. “It’s always been my aim to produce mouth-watering cuisine, but right along with that is the goal of keeping it about family and developing and maintaining lifelong friendships,” says Gaetano. “It’s the Italian way.” Wood-fire pizza is a specialty of Itahlia, with temptations such as the frutti di mare for the seafood lovers – tomato, fior di latte [semi-soft, mozzarella cheese], prawns, mussels, calamari, basil and garlic – or for vegetarians, the ortolana, with grilled zucchini, roasted peppers, pumpkin and cherry tomatoes. Traditional pizzas are also on the menu, including the house special topped with mozzarella, ham, anchovies, olives, capsicum and mild salami. Pasta dishes range from traditional bolognese and lasagne, to the calabrese for chilli lovers and pescatore for tastes of the sea. Steak, chicken, veal and risotto dishes, seafood platters and a choice of salads are

ed., a fast-rising star in the Macedon Ranges foodie scene, is proof that a wholefood/paleo café can cater to the converted yet also inspire newbies with delicious, health-promoting food. And locals have another local to thank for that. Jackie Goodyear, owner of Jed., was raised in the Macedon Ranges before she landed in Brunswick, a spot that buzzes with new thinking that often retrieves older, healthier, more sustainable ways. “So I knew,” says Jackie, “that Gisborne would be the perfect fit for my café, where we serve unrefined sugar- and gluten-free, paleo-focused food on a menu where we continue to explore what nature intended us to consume.” Jackie loves her café’s location – hidden away on a tree-lined street in what she believes is one of the prettiest spots in town. “Jed. was designed and built in a wonderful, century-old building,” she says. “Now we’re expanding the cafe to enhance the building’s original ambience – and to fit in more of our great customers.” Of course, every good café needs a great coffee so Jackie sources an exceptional brew. “We use Padre coffee from a specialty company originating in Brunswick, with an ethos aligned to Jed.,” she says. “It’s still a small, owner-run business described in its own words as a ‘business that prides itself on exceptional products and outstanding service – we love making

coffee’. We definitely share and applaud their commitment.” Fresh milk from Ballarat’s award-winning Inglebrook Dairy is delivered from farm to café door and the eggs and wheat bread are special as well. “Our carefully selected bread is delivered fresh from Zeally Bay Sourdough, an organic bakery which has won national awards,” Jackie says. “And our eggs come from award-winning Josh’s Rainbow Eggs and, more recently, from a local family-run farm that allows their chickens a long, natural life.” The menus offer vegetarian, vegan and meat-based options. All baked goods are gluten-free, and many are vegan-friendly, fructose-free, nut-free or dairy-free. When the renovations are complete, Jackie plans to explore raw desserts, another staple in an ever-growing health movement. At this effervescent place designed for gatherings and quiet solitude alike, they believe in rewarding loyalty. To celebrate its first year, Jed. will randomly select diners to get coffee and meal vouchers to be used at Jed. along with others from participating local businesses. “After all,” says Jackie, “gratitude is what makes the world spin.” Jed., 20 Hamilton Street, Gisborne. A brand built on doing the best job A

drian Williams is a very focused kind of man. When he started with Godings – a landmark establishment on the Western Highway for the past 38 years – he spent lots of time learning his products, and even more time building a successful operation. That eight-year focus paid off. Adrian is now the new owner and group manager of Godings, and has a lot of confidence in where the business is heading. “I was, and am, committed to continuing our longstanding association with Kubota, the best machinery brand around,” says Adrian. “I want the name Kubota to spring to mind when people are looking to purchase the right bit of equipment for their needs. “Another confidence-builder is the team I have around me. Most stayed when I took over, and they’re very happy with the change. And they have such a good understanding of the local market, with most of them living locally as well. “We’re a small family operation, with an emphasis on customer service and, because I’m here every day, they have an immediate contact point, which enables us to respond quickly.” The Kubota label appears on most of the product range – excavators, compact track loaders, tractors, utility vehicles, mowers, generators and grounds-care equipment. Excavator buckets and attachments (including auger drive units), and a range of small-line implements from manufacturers such as Berti, Landpride, John Berends, Kanga, Silvan, Digga, Augertorque, are also in stock. “We’re planning to consolidate our relatively new excavator line, an important

There’s nothing better than, say, a plumber who’s just got his first new machine, and seeing him down

the track when he’s enthusiastically telling us how it’s significantly improved efficiency. “Or it might be a lifestyle customer, who might have just bought their first dream hobby farm, has never operated a tractor and can’t get the smile off their face the first time they slash a paddock.” This very focused man intends Godings to be the tractor and excavator destination of

choice … and all the right elements are in place to make sure Godings is exactly that place. Godings, 2129 Western Highway, Rockbank. Opens 8am-5pm Monday-Friday and 8am-noon Saturday. Inquiries: 9747 1359 or rockbank@godings.com.au

Introducing Jaymie Hi everyone, My name is Jaymie and I am excited to announce that I am the new manager of Synergy Hair Beauty & Massage in Evans Street, Sunbury. I have in excess of six years’ experience in hairdressing, the last few of which I have been stationed in the Macedon/Gisborne area. I was fortunate to complete my three year apprenticeship with the world renowned Tony&Guy salons, training at both their Armadale and St Kilda stores. During my time at Tony&Guy, I excelled and qualified as a colour technician. Colour is my biggest passion – I love nothing more than transforming a client’s look through a simple or dramatic colour change. If you were to ask me what the most important, and indeed exciting, aspect of hairdressing for me is, I would definitely say my relationship with my client is top

of my list! I will listen to you when you are explaining the issues you may be experiencing with your hair and together we will come up with a plan to get your hair back on track. There is nothing that makes me happier than to successfully fulfill a client’s expectations. My other passion is “hair ups”. They are just so much fun. If you are going to the Spring Racing Carnival (it’s just around the corner you know) why not book in and let us pamper you – we will even give you a complimentary wine to get you in the mood. The $100,000 XXXX GOLD Kyneton Cup is the highlight race in a strong nine-race program which attracts racegoers from far and wide. As courtesy buses shuttle Melbourne and Bendigo train passengers to the track, it’s likely many of them have snuck away from work for this exciting mid-week event, such is its popularity.

And it’s not just the gee-gees attracting crowds. The Fashions on the Field program is a beauty, with more than $7000 in prizes. Register on the day from 11am. Supported by Pennie boutique, Elusive Style accessories and Betty McDowell lingerie, the host is Bree Laughlin (pictured), Country Racing Victoria’s fashion blogger, model and presenter. If past years are anything to go by, there’ll be enough style on show to fire up all fashionistas. Emceed by Rob Gaylard, there’s a marquee precinct with former The Voice contestant Cameron Tapp performing, while over on the public lawns, there’s also live music.

The food court shares its spot with the XXXX GOLD beer garden, two venues taking care of refreshments on the day; and there’s big-screen action, a Punters Club and a TAC on-course promotion. Riding home on its family-friendliness, the Kyneton Cup also has organised activities and lots of fun for the kids. Save $5 by booking an early bird admission at www.countryracing.com.au/kyneton. Closer to Sunbury than Gisborne and just off the Calder Freeway at Gap Hill, this house is perfect for people who love a bit of luxury. Rooms are large, with decorative ceiling designs, including rosettes in some. The house has floor heating, evaporative cooling, and a ducted vacuum. The three bedrooms have large built-in wardrobes, the main has an enormous walk-in room and a spacious en suite. There’s also a study, which could be used as a fourth bedroom; it also has built-in storage space. A gas log fireplace and a built-in bar are features of the open-plan lounge, dining and kitchen zone, with a room-sized walk-in pantry. There’s also an enclosed alfresco area, with a sauna, spa and a built-in barbecue included. The triple garage has internal access and three-phase power; there’s a security alarm system and intercom. On about 0.4-hectares, the property also has a large shed, fruit trees, a vegie patch and an automated sprinkler system.

Built by the vendors 44 years ago, Topsham is a beautifully presented architect-designed house set among about three hectares of established gardens. The house features vaulted timber ceilings, north-facing living spaces on the slopes beneath Mount Macedon, near the Willimigongon Creek. Two of the four bedrooms have built-in wardrobes, the main has two and an en suite, a recent addition. There have been recent renovations to the kitchen, bathroom and laundry, including new Caesarstone and granite benchtops. The kitchen has timber cabinetry, including a walk-in pantry, and quality European appliances, including a dishwasher, gas cooktop and a wall oven. The lounge room has a built-in brick fireplace and floor-to-ceiling windows, which bring the outside in. There are about 90,000 daffodil bulbs planted throughout the grounds, and there is an orchard, a vegie garden, a double garage, a workshop and tank water – all within coo-ee of town services.

Ideal for a big family, this 28-square house is only a short stroll to schools, tennis courts, child care and medical centres, the railway station and the Calder Freeway. There are four bedrooms, two with built-in wardrobes, the other two with walk-in wardrobes and en suites. The family-meals zone is open and modern, set on tiles; a cast-iron built-in fireplace in the adjoining living area is a great feature. Bifold doors from the meals area open onto an enclosed north-facing pergola, and the gardens around are beautifully finished, including espaliered fruit trees, colourful tree peonies and plenty of bulbs, a water feature and a 10,000-litre underground tank. There is also sideway access, a carport and double garage.

This three bedroom house in the heart of Sunbury sits opposite parkland and has been completely renovated. Carpets are all new, as is the paintwork – and there’s new boundary fencing all round. Inside is a blend of old world and new – the lounge room has a gorgeous art deco plaster ceiling and a feature fireplace, while the kitchen is all contemporary, with quality stainless-steel appliances, including an electric cooktop, an underbench oven and a dishwasher. All three bedrooms have built-in wardrobes. The family-meals zone is a light-filled space, and glass sliders from here open onto a paved, undercover back verandah. Windows are fitted with roller blinds, and there’s a split-system, a double carport and a 6 x 10-metre shed, with double doors.

“ABOVE AND BELOW” We watched in awe as the amazing helicopter pilot’s manoeuvred through blinding smoke and battled strong winds to fight the recent bushfires from above. Below, on the ground, members of the CFA CF from near and far fought an exhausting battle day and night to protect lives and property. Our hearts go out to those who lost fencing, sheds and belongings. The stress levels are so high during bushfires and it is often the “not knowing” that creates anxiety. “Is my house safe?” “Are my animals ok?” Many residents of Benloch, Baynton and Pastoria went to work or about their business only to find that they could not return home – no precious belongings in safe keeping, pets at home alone – a dreadful time for so many. There is anger surrounding this particular bushfire but I do not want to concentrate on anger but more gratitude. Gratitude to those who year after year put

NEW HOMES AND LAND – Sustainability scores savings

(iStock)

The sky-rocketing costs of water and energy, predicted to triple over the next 10 years, won’t be a problem with clever architectural designs, says Archicentre, the building advisory service of the Australian Institute of Architects. Archicentre’s Victorian state manager David Hallett said fast-rising utilities costs are putting the designs of mass-marketed housing, aka ‘McMansions’, under scrutiny due to their running costs. “Australians are facing a period of price rises in water and energy bills, as a result of the costs of major infrastructure projects and environmental demands for green energy,” Mr Hallett said. Careful, clever sustainable design can substantially cut the running and maintenance costs of a family home, from the correct siting of homes on blocks, to the use of double glazing and the choice of materials and appliances all playing an important role. ‘‘With only seven per cent of housing designed by architects, most home buyers and renovators lose the chance to save money through their housing design. ‘‘Cost-effective energy efficiency is hard to achieve if you’re putting a standard plan on a block – a design that’s tailored to the block from the beginning can result in a cheaper building. ‘‘With smaller houses, townhouses and units becoming a greater part of the affordable market, sustainable designs and clever solutions are needed to maintain a lifestyle standard with much less space.’’ ‘‘Green Home Design factors … will save the home owner money. The soon to be introduced compulsory disclosure laws on environmental performance on all houses for sale will make clever sustainable houses even more valuable when they are sold.”

SPORT Recruits help fire Lancefield to the perfect start Lancefield has made the perfect start to the Central Highlands Bowls division 1 season with three wins from as many matches. The latest victory was 96 (16)-72 (2) against Kyneton on Saturday, with all four rinks being one-sided. Lancefield’s Peter Linehan, Mark Godbolt and Garry Templar all got home by more than 10 shots, while teammate Michael Linehan lost his rink by 14. Lancefield secretary Gordon Charles said the club’s start was gratifying. “The division 1 side seems to be working well together,” Charles said before the weekend match. “The recruits have really fitted in.”

The club added four new players to the top side to replace three who have moved away to warmer weather. “Three of the four recruits, Bev and Jeff Holmes, and Barry Atkins, came from Romsey,” Charles said. “They are Lancefield people and have fitted in really well. The president’s wife, Leanne Dickenson, has also joined the team.” The club’s second team, which plays in division 3, suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday. Charles said finals was the aim for both its Saturday teams and its Tuesday pennant sides. “Last year our division 1 side was knocked out

in the preliminary final, while the division 3s lost the grand final,” he said. “One more game improvement from both sides would be fantastic.” Seven Lancefield players have been rewarded for their starts to the season and have been named in the competition’s Millar-Deason challenge teams. Lancefield has the most representatives in the teams – Barry and Mark Godbolt, Jeff and Bev Holmes, Aaron Young, Templar and Wayne Turner – while Michael Linehan has been named as an emergency. This week, Lancefield plays Kyneton Golf Gold, “the yardstick of the competition again”,

according to Charles. Gisborne is the only other unbeaten side after rolling Kyneton Golf Gold and now sits on top of the ladder, two points clear of Lancefield. In a dominant display against the reigning premiers, Gisborne won 102 (16)-87 (2). In other matches, Romsey defeated Kyneton Golf Blue 98 (15)-79 (3), while Bacchus Marsh was too good for Woodend, 119 (16)-74 (2). Gisborne, Kyneton and Trentham were among the winners in division 2 and Bacchus Marsh, Kyneton Blue, Romsey and Gisborne Red won in division 3. Tara Murray

Hunt on for Tigers’ new senior coach

Jack Dillon is enjoying stepping up to the B-grade team. (Shawn Smits)

Thunder rumbles to life By Tara Murray East Sunbury is hoping Saturday was a turning point in its Gisborne and District Cricket Association B-grade campaign. Two losses to start the season coincided with the coach of last year’s grand finalist, Mark Hourigan, being overseas. Hourigan, who returned for the club’s first two-day game, against Macedon, said he hoped things would start turning around. “I’ve been away, but I had a chat to them yesterday about what they need to be doing,” he said. “I had done the preseason with them but there’s still players getting settled. We need to get some consistency.” The chat must have worked as the Thunder bowled Macedon out for 112. “We should have bowled them out for 80,” Hourigan said. “There were a lot of chances that we let go … dropped catches, missed stumpings

and run outs. It was a poor effort in the field. It’s a goal now to improve in those areas.” Chris Watson was best of the bowlers, taking 6-45 off his six overs. The Thunder will resume at 0-9 on day two. “The second half of the challenge is batting, Hourigan said. “It looks like Liam Sherlock has got his rhythm back. He only faced one over and he hit eight runs.” After losing some players in the off-season, the Thunder has continued to promote youth into the senior team. “Jack Dillon, who’s just 15, opened the bowling and has been a rep cricketer through the younger grades,” Hourigan said. “Because of his age he has bowling restrictions that limit how much we can bowl him. “Brady Penticoss has stepped up and so has Liam Williams; they’re 16 to 17 years old.” Hourigan said the key on two day of the clash would be to bat the day out.

50 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 27, 2015

“You are never over-confident with chasing down the total,” he said. “We will set little goals throughout the day. Our first goal was not to lose a wicket before stumps on day one. “The main target is set at batting out the day to help set our season up. “You need to be able to bat through an innings, which we were able to do last year.” Rupertswood and Lancefield are in good positions after day one of their clashes against Wallan and Ashfield. Rupertswood made it to 9-254 from its 80 overs. After starting well, Rupertswood lost 5-23 in the middle of the innings to slump to 6-118. The lower order recovered to post a tough total for Wallan to chase down. Lancefield captain-coach Luke Barker made 94 in his side’s total of 7-232. In the other match, St Anthonys is 2-45 chasing Bacchus Marsh’s 133.

Sunbury Tigers Rugby Club is looking for a new senior coach for the second time in as many years. Jamie Blackwood took on the role this year but has stepped aside for next season due to family commitments. Blackwood, who was assistant coach, took over from Julian Keddy, who decided to concentrate on the club’s presidency. The Tigers struggled this year, winning just four games to finish seventh on the Victorian Rugby League first grade ladder. But before that, they had won four premierships in six years. Keddy says the club has started taking applications for the senior coaching role. “Jamie’s partner had a baby and the role of coach was too much commitment for him,” the club president said. “It’s a voluntary position and, with the amount of time you need with a newborn, it’s a lot of work.” Keddy says the club wants to continue the progression of younger players into senior sides. “With the junior grades being successful, as they have been, it’s about obviously turning them into senior players. “We want someone who’s committed to us and fits in with the philosophy of being a family club.” Prospective coaches need to have a senior club coach level 2 certificate or be looking to obtain their level 2 certificate. Keddy says there has been some interest. Meanwhile, the Tigers’ Aaron Teroi was part of the Cook Islands national team that played Tonga in a Rugby League World Cup qualifier. Former Tigers players and brothers Vincent and Reubenn Rennie were also part of the Cook Islands team. “They put in a good display and made a real fist of it against a team that had 16 to 17 NRL players in it,” Keddy said, Tonga won through to the World Cup with a 28-8 win. Teroi, who is also on Melbourne Storm’s under-20 list, has played all his rugby in Melbourne. “It’s good for Melbourne football to see local players getting a go,” Keddy said. “It gives younger kids a view that there’s a pathway to a higher level.” Applications for the coaching job close on November 30. The club is also looking for team mangers, sports trainers and players. Applications to julian@ alltradeis.com.au Tara Murray

Sunbury tops the table By Tara Murray Sunbury jumped to the top of the table with a comprehensive win over Moonee Valley (2) in Bowls Victoria pennants on Saturday. Since losing the opening round of the division 2, section 2 season, Sunbury has won 11 of the 12 rinks available in the next three rounds. It took all four rinks against Moonee Valley (2) to win 82 (18)-56 (0). Elise and Mark Cowan’s rinks had big wins, 24-14 and 22-10,

Sunbury’s Dave Glennon said it was good to see the side starting to get some consistent results. “They [Moonee Valley] are on the bottom of the ladder, but you still have to beat them,” he said. “They’re newly promoted and were on only seven points going into the match. These teams are there to be beaten and it’s good to get the 18-0 win.

“Three wins in a row is a really good result.” Glennon said that with a couple of players to come back in, selectors would have a tough time selecting the team for next weekend. Sunbury is one of four teams on three wins and a loss, but it sits on top on points, four clear of Fitzroy Victoria (2). In a good day for Sunbury, four of its five teams recorded victories. Sunbury’s top side plays Broadmeadows in Broadmeadows this weekend.

51 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 27, 2015

Lions’ recruiting drive yields seven fresh faces Sunbury Lions football coach Rick Horwood hopes the club’s players and supporters are about to be rewarded for their patience over the past two seasons. While the Lions have made the finals in both seasons, they have focused heavily on introducing youth to the side instead of looking for outside players to fill gaps. Now, with a solid senior experience base beneath it, the club is seeking to add depth. Last week the Lions announced seven new signings, headed by former Gold Coast Suns AFL player Alik Magin. The club recruited players for certain roles, with several already having links to the Lions.

“Our list manager, Chris MacDonough, has been massive and we wouldn’t have been able to do it without him,” Horwood said. “He’s worked tirelessly to get all these players. “Alik was the big signing, and once we gained access to him it led to Grant Valles [former VFL player with Sandringham, Bendigo and Frankston] coming on board because they’re friends. “Joey Redfern, who has been playing VFL for Werribee, contacted us and signed with us as his home club. “Jesse McInneny spoke to us last year and now he’s back in Melbourne; he’s signed on. And we spoke to his brother, Ben, who was

vice-captain of Sunshine, and he’s agreed to come across, too.” The other signings are Chris Tsardakis and Roger Allen, while Port Melbourne VFL player Daniel Toman will call Sunbury his home club for a third straight year. “It’s exciting for the young group and the supporters,” Horwood said. “We identified what we needed and we hope this can make us more competitive against the stronger clubs. The most pleasing thing is for the supporters, who… will now see the benefits. There’s a buzz around the place.” Horwood said many of the players recruited were in the 22-25 age bracket and had potential

Premier in a tight spot By Tara Murray Staring down the barrel of a third straight loss isn’t something associated with Sunbury United Cricket Club. Yet that’s the situation of the reigning premier in Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup. The side has lost its opening two matches of the season and is on the back foot after day one of its third-round match against Diggers Rest Bulla. But for new United coach Jeremy Newman there’s lots of positives and he isn’t hitting the panic button. “It’s been tough, results-wise, but we have been OK in each of the games,” he said. “At stages we’ve had eight of last season’s premiership team missing and there’s still five or six of those players not playing. “We’ve had five players under the age of 22 with us.” Newman says injuries and unavailability of senior players has opened the door for newcomers. “The club has won four premierships in recent years and the same players have played in most of them,” he says. “Some of the guys who have come into the team were playing in D grade last season.” One who has really impressed Newman is 15-year-old Harrison Knott. “He was playing in D-grade and under-16s as a batsman last season,” the coach says. “I saw him bowling off-spin at training and saw something and thought I’d give him a go. “He’s only new to bowling off-spin and once he gets the right temperament he will be a good bowler. “His bowling has been better than his figures show and we haven’t really helped by dropping catches.” Newman, who crossed from Melton Lions in the offseason, says Josh Smith, Steven Fogarty and Jesse James are others making the most of promotion to the senior team. He says the key now is to ensure the side doesn’t panic about poor results so far. “We’re a new group and taking a while to gel,” he says. “We have let ourselves down in the field and are working on that at training. “You only need to finish fourth and anything can happen. You only have to play two finals.” United’s fielding will need to improve immediately if it’s to beat Diggers Rest Bulla this weekend. After being dismissed for 96, United will need quick wickets. Diggers Rest will resume at 3-48. “We dropped two catches late so they should have been five down,” Newman said. “You have to always stay positive … if we can get a couple of wickets the pressure is on them.” Romsey has secured first innings points against Sunbury; Riddell is in the box seat against Gisborne; and Woodend is 3-42 chasing Bacchus Marsh’s 150. Harrison Knott (pictured) has been handy with the bat and a revelation with the ball. (Shawn Smits) 52 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 27, 2015

to be at the club for many years. “Joey, Ben, Grant and Alik have played at a good level and have played seniors longer than our younger players. We’re pretty excited but not getting carried away.” The Lions coach said almost all the 2015 list had re-signed for next year. “Ben Said has followed Jamie Elliott over to Riddell, where he will be coaching next season. He has our blessing,” Horwood said. “Our Calder Cannons boys, Mitch Conn, Dylan Tarczon and Jayden Eales, are all doing preseasons with VFL clubs.” The Lions start training on November 9 Tara Murray

Dragons seek new talent as core dwindles Gisborne is looking to add further talent to its women’s cricket program. The Dragons play in the CV Women’s Community Cricket Shield and have struggled with numbers early in the season. Dragons’ women’s cricket co-ordinator Sarah Gunn said the side had played the first two rounds with a player down. “We have a core group, but with players retiring, moving about and work, we don’t have a full team every week. “We have a lot of juniors coming through, but they’re a bit young to play in the seniors and there are only about five to six players available on Sundays.” Gunn said being a player down had had an impact on the field. “When you play the top sides, they can get a lot of balls through the field,” she said. “If we had the extra person, we might get them out a little quicker. With batting, you are essentially 1-0 before you start.” Gunn says the Dragons will welcome girls who want to join up. “They can come down to our practice sessions and be at any fitness level. We play T20 and one-day games, and train every Thursday. “Any level of experience is welcome. “We have a whole team of girls at under-12 level.” The Dragons enjoy being back in the Shield division. Due to a lack of teams playing the shield division last season, those participating were split between lower north-west and south-east divisions. The Dragons lost the T20 and one-day grand finals to Darebin in 2014-15’s north-west competition. “A few teams folded and there were not enough teams in the competition so we had to go down a grade,” Gunn said. “With more teams this year we’re back in the higher division. It means we have to travel more, but the games are better for us”. After starting the season with two losses, the Dragons finally have a win under their belt, having beaten Mt Martha in a T20 match on Sunday, making 4-137 off 20 overs while its opponent managed just 6-101. Gisborne’s men’s side will need quick wickets to beat Riddell in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup. The Dragons succumbed for just 129 and at stumps on day one Riddell was 1-21. Contact Sarah for women’s cricket on 0438 076 099, president@gisbornecc.com Tara Murray
