Anger at rezoning impasse A Macedon Ranges residents group has put a stop, for now, to the council’s plan to expand the Woodend town centre into an existing residential area. The council proposed to extend the town’s commercial boundaries by including the residential block bounded by High, Brooke, Templeton and Urquhart streets. Macedon Ranges Residents Association (MRRA) has been accused of costing ratepayers more than $20,000 so far in its battle to prevent the council’s rezoning, which has been the subject of two independent planning panel hearings. Councillors expressed frustration last Wednesday when their meeting was told the group refused to budge from its opposition. The association has objected five times so far to amendments proposed to Woodend’s commercial zones, all of which have been referred to independent planning panels. Councils are obliged to ask for independent panel reviews of planning proposals that are opposed or cannot be resolved with the objectors. Planning and environment director Sophie Segafredo said the past two referrals alone had cost the council $21,000 and at least 10 days of labour. Cr John Letchford said he believed the group was simply objecting “on principle”. “I think the MRRA is just objecting for objection’s sake “They are not qualified planners nor do they have one working with them when they make these submissions,” Cr Letchford said.

“It’s costing the ratepayers a lot of money to entertain these objections that are just made on principle.” MRRA spokeswoman Christine Pruneau said the group had objected to the rezoning because of potential for developments that did not fit with the town’s main-street character. “In some cases the amendments by council are so bad that we have to say something,” Ms Pruneau said. “We have put in five submissions – two were in support and the rest have some aspects we have objected to.

‘‘

Who is wasting ratepayers’ dollars?

’’

- Christine Pruneau

“The council has a reputation for trying really bad things [when developing land],” Ms Pruneau said. “When the council adopts an official document, we as residents should expect that any amendments shouldn’t look any different from the rest of the original structure plan. But that’s not the case. “Yes, we objected to the proposed rezoning of the Woodend development and we’re encouraging others to object as well.” Ms Pruneau said the residents’ group wanted all town structure plans, including those for Woodend, Kyneton and Riddells Creek, plus two other rezoning amendments to be considered together by a panel to save the expense. Councillors voted against this. “The question really should be, who is wasting ratepayers’ dollars?” Ms Pruneau said.

NBN rollout set for new year By Esther Lauaki Super-fast broadband is on its way to Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges next year – but that’s still not soon enough for some residents and businesses. The latest NBN rollout plan schedules 2400 premises in Romsey and Lancefield, 1390 from Ashbourne to Woodend and 14,400 in Sunbury and Diggers Rest to be connected to the NBN by fibre-to-the-node (FTTN) by March next year.

A further 3030 premises in Bulla, Gisborne and Riddells Creek will have fixed wireless connections by January 2017. But McEwen Labor MP Rob Mitchell said the new schedule was “a great blow” to suburbs such as Sunbury, Lancefield, Romsey and Gisborne, which are experiencing high growth and can’t afford to wait until next year. “The three-year rollout plan was a secondrate version of the NBN proposed by the previous government and is not realistic and not achievable,” Mr Mitchell said.

“The issue our communities face is that, under this roll-out, we will only get a second rate NBN using old and poor-grade copper to the home [with FTTN connections]. “This means, in comparison with inner city suburbs, we will not get an equivalent service.” Liberal Victorian senator Scott Ryan said the construction schedule, released on October 20, detailed plans to network 9.5 million premises nationwide. “The Coalition government recognises that the role of the internet is changing and that

consumers want fast broadband as soon as possible,” Senator Ryan said. “The higher bandwidth that NBN services will facilitate allows for households and businesses to do their everyday tasks more efficiently and effectively. “Internet access is important for our community and will transform education, healthcare and other critical online services. “The plan demonstrates the government’s commitment to closing the digital divide in Australia,” he said.

JOEL BERTONCINI

Kyneton arrival a truly ‘big’ moment Joel Bertoncini’s homecoming was fit for a hero as he ran through Kyneton’s crowded main street on the final leg of his journey from Sydney. Hundreds turned out to cheer on Mr Bertoncini last Wednesday as he completed his 900-kilometre trek in 15 days to honour a man who gave so much. He started his Doing it for Big Pete campaign after his best friend’s father, Kyneton businessman Peter Connor, died of cancer in 2009. Mr Bertoncini, 30, said the death of ‘Big Pete’ jolted him into taking control of his own health.

‘‘When he died, it was a bit of a wake-up call,’’ he said. Mr Bertoncini left Sydney on October 13, passing through towns including Mittagong, Gundagai, Holbrook and Broadford before arriving in Kyneton on October 27, the anniversary of Mr Connor’s death. “Peter had meant so much to me, so I vowed to do as much as I could to raise awareness about the disease that took his life,” he said. Mr Bertoncini also ran a video blog thanking his supporters throughout the campaign. He shed more than 40 kilograms and clocked up more than 4000 kilometres of training

before making the hard trip home from the Sydney Opera House to his hometown, raising money and awareness for the Cancer Council. “I would like to thank everyone involved in my epic run … the support crew, sponsors, my running coach, Gordon Muir, my friends and everyone who ran with me along the way,” he posted on social media. The Doing it for Big Pete campaign is still taking donations online. Donations: goo.gl/5sSo3Z Esther Lauaki

Collisions between kangaroos and motor vehicles around Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges are on the rise. Latest statistics from Wildlife Victoria recorded 123 collisions at Sunbury in the past 12 months and 100 at Woodend. Wildlife Victoria spokeswoman Amy Amato said Sunbury and Macedon Ranges were consistently considered ‘hotspots’ for wildlife-vehicle collisions. “We urge drivers to take caution on the road,” she said. “Recent fire activity may result in an increase of wildlife movements around the region so it’s important to stay vigilant on the roads and keep an eye out for travelling wildlife.” Ms Amato said Wildlife Victoria’s emergency response service had experienced an increase in reports about animals struck by vehicles in the past few years, with 6824 collisions reported in the year to October – up from 6057 the year before. “Sadly most reports about wildlife involved in collisions are not from the person who has hit the animal. In this case, it could be deemed an offence to leave the scene and the animal before checking that they and any possible pouch young are okay.” Ms Amato urged drivers to report incidents right away. “We have experienced volunteers who can be deployed to the scene to check the animal as soon as possible,” she said. “The welfare of native animals is everyone’s concern and Wildlife Victoria’s duty.” Eastern grey kangaroos are by far the most common species involved in vehicle collisions in Victoria, Ms Amato said. Commuters ‘seethe’ over V/Line By Esther Lauaki V/Line services to Sunbury were “the elephant in the room”, a state Coalition MP told a public transport community forum last week. Public Transport Victoria hosted the meeting at Sunbury Aquatic and Leisure Centre on October 28 with more than 200 people showing up to discuss the region’s public transport. Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan also fronted after Liberal MP Bernie Finn challenged her to explain the government’s

approach to V/Line services to Sunbury, but she was reluctant to discuss the issue. Mr Finn, a Bulla resident, said 99 per cent of people in attendance had come to discuss restrictions that would bar Sunbury commuters from Bendigo-bound V/Line trains from next January – the cause of ongoing angst. “Nobody wanted to discuss the elephant in the room,” he said. “There was a facilitator there from PTV and he spoke about the buses and the future of public transport in Victoria. “But when people wanted to discuss V/Line they were shut down. Residents were

told during the meeting to ‘be positive instead of dwelling on the negative’. “The longer the meeting went on, the more frustrated people were getting. By the end they were seething.” Sunbury Residents Association president Bernie O’Farrell said that people at the meeting made it clear they wanted some assurance from PTV and Ms Allan about retaining the Sunbury V/Line service. “PTV chose to deal with a lot of issues except V/Line,” Mr O’Farrell said. “There were frequent interjections from right across

the crowd throughout the night. When the minister did arrive, she didn’t leave us with very much confidence and didn’t give any commitment to us at all that she would retain the V/Line service to Sunbury.” Restrictions barring Sunbury commuters from Bendigo-bound V/Line trains will not be enforced until January. The restrictions, when announced, were hailed by people in towns such as Woodend who have since expressed frustration that crowding on peak services will continue in the short term.

Big cat rises from ashes panther was a gift for Lancefield. The district is one of several in Victoria where claims of big cat sightings have surfaced regularly over the years. Some from Lancefield now think those responsible for their new town centrepiece are paying tribute to the black cat myth. Staff at the Lancefield IGA supermarket had no idea who put it there, but they wanted it to stay. The petition gained more than 150 signatures from the supermarket alone in support of keeping the metal beast. Peter Quinn of Lancefield Neighbourhood House said he suspects the panther might be the work of “artists from up in the hills” looking to spread goodwill in the wake of last month’s bushfires. Macedon Ranges councillor Henry McLaughlin said it remains to be seen whether the sculpture will stay or go. Esther Lauaki

The black panther of Lancefield has been the stuff of legend (and slow news’ weeks) for decades. So, understandably, residents were somewhat bemused when a larger-than-life sculpture mysteriously appeared on the High Street median strip overnight on October 23. It’s understood the sculpture was left there the night before the much-loved monthly farmers market opened on Saturday morning. An artist has yet to come forward to claim responsibility, and locals continue to speculate about who did it and why. A single clue came in the form of a printed petition, stating: “The Panther has escaped the Lancefield bushfires … should the panther stay or go?” The petition was placed under the doors of businesses, and also refers to another piece of public art erected at next door Romsey. This, it points out, cost ratepayers $25,000, whereas the

Woodend cyclists have raised close to $160,000 for the fight against cancer in the past three years. Spokes of Hope’s 14 members completed their third Ride to Conquer Cancer on October 25, collecting more than $55,000 for the cause this year alone. In all, they’ve raised $157,000 from three charity rides since 2012. The 200-kilometre ride from Melbourne to the Mornington Peninsula last month benefited the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. Team member Daron Jacks said all crews were thrilled with this year’s successful event, which raised more than $2.9 million. “The weekend was a challenge, with hot northerly head winds working us hard for the final 50 kilometres,” he said. “We were rapt to be greeted by supporters at the finish line

Houses to adjoin Bulla landfill By Alexandra Laskie Almost 130 hectares of land next to a Bulla quarry and landfill has been rezoned to allow housing developments to cater for urban growth. The Melbourne Planning Authority (MPA) has rezoned, from farming to urban growth, land immediately west and south of the Hi-Quality Quarry on Sunbury Road. In a document, the authority outlined why the rezoning was needed, stating the land had been temporarily zoned for farming purposes in 2010 to act as a buffer. It went on to state the

quarry operations had since been scaled back. The authority determined “the subject land was no longer limited by the quarry operation and now suitable for urban development”. But Hi-Quality Quarry has applied to Hume council for a permit to increase its operating times to 24 hours a day, seven days a week, except some public holidays.

The company has been contracted by Melbourne Airport to receive soil and other material from the airport’s taxiway and other construction work there, as well as from other major projects in the city. Melbourne Airport – six kilometres by road from the quarry – is building a new fourth terminal and transport hub, expanding its southern apron. A third runway is also in its plans. MPA chief executive Peter Seamer said while the Bulla site had been rezoned, urban development could not occur on it until a precinct structure plan (PSP) had been

approved. PSPs are master plans for new communities usually catering for between 10,000 and 30,000 people. “The Sunbury South PSP … will include controls to ensure that sensitive development cannot occur in the adjacent area until quarry operations have ceased,” Mr Seamer said. The Sunbury South PSP will be exhibited early next year. Hume’s director of city sustainability, Kelvin Walsh, said the council was aware of the rezoning. He said the council had not yet considered Hi-Quality Quarry’s permit application.

Pattern for success Melbourne author Rosalie Ham will visit Sunbury later this month to deliver a talk about the newly released feature film The Dressmaker, based on her novel. Fans of the bestselling Australian gothic novel, a dark satire written by Ham, will be taken ‘behind the scenes’ of the screen version at the Sunbury library on November 19. The film stars Kate Winslet, Judy Davis, Liam Hemsworth and Hugo Weaving, with a number of scenes shot at Little River and Werribee Park. The Dressmaker Dressmaker, set in the 1950s, tells of Paris-based fashion designer Tilly Dunnage, who returns to her small hometown in country Victoria to right some past wrongs. Hume mayor Adem Atmaca says the literary evening will feature discussions with Ham about the inspiration that brought about the novel, its characters, the film’s cast, costumes and locations – all of which are bringing The

Dressmaker, a uniquely Australian story, off the page and on to silver screens around the world. “Rosalie was a nurse for 21 years before she took on a novel course at university almost by accident,” Cr Atmaca said. “The The Dressmaker came about as she learnt the craft of novel-writing at RMIT, and it’s a spectacular piece of work. “Guests at the Sunbury library talk will be in for a treat because Rosalie is keen to give a real insight into her craft, with many years of experience as a literature teacher.” Participants will be able to get signed copies of Ham’s bestselling novel and find out what it takes to work with some of Hollywood’s biggest names. The Dressmaker literary evening runs from 6.30pm to 8pm. www.humelibraries.vic.gov.au Esther Lauaki

The grass might just be greener in the Sunbury and Macedon Ranges now that nine schools and community groups have picked up water grants valued at $14,000. Western Water awarded the grants as part of recent National Water Week celebrations. Funding of 13 projects will include money for tanks, school and community gardens, and environmental projects – a total of more than $19,000. National Water Week, October 18-25, encourages communities to take action to protect waterways and sources. St Ambrose Parish School at Woodend, Sunbury’s Goonawarra Primary School and A Step Ahead Early Learning Centre, and St Brigid’s Primary School at Gisborne, each

received $1000. Among their spending plans are a sustainable garden and worm farm, a tank and watering system for community vegetable garden, irrigation equipment and a “chook tractor” for a kitchen garden, and a tank for a children’s garden. Friends of Blind Creek at Sunbury will use its $2000 grant for new plantings, monitoring water quality and education, while Gisborne Oaks aged-care centre wants to plant a sensory garden in the courtyard of its dementia wing. Watering systems and gardening equipment were priorities for community gardens at New Gisborne and Sunbury. Esther Lauaki

A good, old-fashioned spring fair will draw the crowds when Woodend Primary School’s grade 4 pupils host the annual Carlsruhe Country Fair on November 29. The fair will showcase the historic rural campus and will feature quintessentially country activities such as farm dog demonstrations, displays by the Woodend Pony Club, a treasure hunt and gumboot throwing. The fair will run from 10am-4pm at Nicholson Street, Carlesruhe.

Mayor pledges caring role

HELEN PATSIKATHEODOROU

(Supplied)

By Alexandra Laskie Hume councillor Helen Patsikatheodorou will serve as mayor for the second time after polling the most votes for the job last week. The Meadow Valley ward councillor vowed to improve community health, help create jobs and improve safety in her 12-month mayoral tenure. “I have stated many times over the years that I’m passionate about people and that we need to improve our community’s health,” she said in her acceptance speech. “Others would say that economic development is more important. There is a

In her acceptance speech, she promised to wear something pink every day to prompt the men to remind women in their lives to have their breasts screened. “No women in Hume should die from breast cancer,” she said. Cr Patsikatheodorou last served as mayor in 2011. Councillors Ann Potter, Vic Dougall, Casey Nunn and Geoff Porter did not put their hands up for the job. Ms Patsikatheodorou is a member of the Labor Party and loves to read on her Kindle. She thanked her husband John and sons Nikolas, Dimitri and Stratos for their support.

fine balance between both. Those that know me would appreciate that in my mayoral term, my focus will be on people, our community and particularly those who need our help the most.” Aitken ward councillor Chandra Bamunusinghe will be Cr Patsikatheodorou’s deputy. Two years ago, Cr Patsikatheodorou, a West Meadows resident, was told she had an invasive form of breast cancer. Early detection and a successful operation to remove the tumour allowed the community-minded councillor to return to work. But she has vowed to promote breast screening in Hume.

Nightwalkers welcomed Residents can find out what lurks in the shadows of Mount Macedon on an upcoming night walk. Families will join Parks Victoria rangers and the Macedon Ranges council environment team for the free spotlighted tour around Sanatorium Lake, Mount Macedon, on November 7. Macedon Ranges mayor Jennifer Anderson said the walk was a must-do activity for nature lovers keen to find out more about fauna in the area. “Possums, gliders and night birds are a few of the species that call Sanatorium Lake home,” Cr Anderson said. “The one-kilometre, guided night walk will be a fun, informative and relaxed way to try your luck at spotting them in their natural habitat.”

Council planning and environment director Sophie Segafredo encouraged the community to grab a torch and take the family along. “We want our community to spend some time outdoors and appreciate the wonderful wildlife we have,” she said. “It’s also a way that we hope to help residents pursue a passion for nature.” The spotlight walk is from 8pm until 10pm. Savvy shoppers say local is way to go It’s now the savvy shoppers, not just those buying on principle, who understand the value - in terms of both cost and quality – of buying Australian made, and the benefits that brings to their communities. Harvey Norman Bedding Watergardens not only stocks Australian made products all the way, it also specialises, which is another attraction for the smart shopper. Owner Avelyn Miranda knows her store is the kind that busy, switched-on customers love. “ We understand the reason people need time and good advice to choose wisely,” Avelyn says. “Customers come in looking for a bed to help them sleep well, such an important part of good health and general wellbeing. And since we spend a third of our lives in one, it should be superior just right for a particular need and particular budgets. “What we offer is choice, right across our showroom, of mattresses and ensembles with labels we all know and respect: Sealy Posturepedic, King Koil, Tempur, Sleep Maker and Sleep Number among others.” Items to make a bed and bedroom look fantastic are also here, from suites to lamps, bed linen to wall art and mirrors to cushions. And, by the way, Avelyn’s team is another reason to shop here: approachable and ready with professional advice. Harvey Norman Bedding Watergardens. 450 Melton Hwy, Taylors Lakes. Emergency management Victorian commissioner Craig Lapsley says communities need to make sure they are keeping themselves and their families safe during high fire risks. “The Fire Ready campaign is aimed at increasing preparations for the upcoming fire season and the importance of this preparation. “This campaign is aimed at creating a sense of urgency around the need to leave early [during a fire] before feeling threatened and understand the difference between fire ratings,” says Mr Lapsley. NECK PAIN WITH TRAVEL

Clinic works on lifelong fitness for every body

1204940-LB44-15 10022033-09

Sunbury Physiotherapy Clinic 20 Horne St, Sunbury.

9744 5066

Written By: Michelle Tanner

For those of us who like to travel there is always excitement associated with going to another city or another country. However it doesn’t take long for the romance of travel to disappear. We quickly learn that travel is literally a PAIN IN THE NECK. Who were airline seats designed for? It certainly wasn’t for human beings. The position you are placed in is one of the worst possible for your neck and back. More importantly the lack of movement available makes the problem significantly worse. It is this lack of movement that is the greatest cause of spinal pain with travellers. It is rare to get off a plane flight of significant length without some sort of ache or pain. Here are some simple hints for travellers: 1. Move it or lose it. Get out of your seat often. It is the prolonged sitting that causes the problems. 2. Request an aisle seat to make it easier to get up. 3. Be active before you leave by stretching or going for a walk to get the blood pumping. 4. Don’t sit in the transit lounge. Walk around, look at the shops etc. In transit can add hours to your already lengthy sitting time. 5. Wiggle about and change your seating position before you get sore. 6. Use a neck travel pillow (eg memory foam) to support your head/neck better when resting/sleeping. 7. Get treatment from your physiotherapist BEFORE travelling if you have a problem to get your neck/back in optimal condition and to minimise travel pain. Accurate assessment and quick intervention combined with appropriate advice and analgesics will make a significant difference to your problem and make the journey more comfortable.

Get friends, family or workmates together, and it’s almost invariable that the subject of health and fitness comes up. People of all ages are showing more and more interest in achieving or maintaining these central aspects of a life well lived. But when good intentions resolve into action, it’s important to head in the right direction, says Justine Barrow, director of Sunbury Physiotherapy Clinic. “A great example is clinical Pilates, a service we provide at the clinic,” Justine explains. “Clinical Pilates incorporates physiotherapy and is an adaptation of the original [Pilates]. “Clinical Pilates is distinct from the Pilates classes offered by many fitness centres, where larger numbers of people attend and generic exercises are taught. This one-size-fits-all approach can, at best, limit reaching potential and, at worst, lead to further injury.” Clinical Pilates is an exercise-based treatment that focuses on ‘core’ stability, assists with balance, posture, optimal movement and function improvement in people with either acute or chronic pain. “At our clinic, people (of any fitness level) are individually assessed by a physiotherapist, who ascertains goals and designs an exercise program specifically targeted to problem areas and capabilities. They’re then supervised by a physiotherapist in a group of four or less.” Clinical Pilates is also particularly helpful for people with musculoskeletal, neck, spine and pelvic injuries. It’s beneficial for women pre- and postnatally, and forms an integral part of AFL player and elite athlete conditioning. The clinic’s physiotherapists with post-grad qualifications – who are highly regarded for their empathy – offer a sizeable menu of services such as musculoskeletal, sports, paediatric and aquatic physiotherapy; management of vestibular and dizziness disorders; hand therapy; home-based occupational therapy, and treatment of spinal, sport, motor vehicle and work injuries. Justine, whose clinic has maintained rigorous quality endorsement standards since 1995, finishes with simple advice on how people can achieve optimal wellbeing: “Sit less and become more active, whether through incidental exercise every day or participating in fitness activities or organised sports.” Sunbury Physiotherapy Clinic, 20 Horne Street, Sunbury, also consults at Gisborne Medical Centre on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Opens 8am-8pm Monday-Friday and 7.40am-12.40pm Saturday. Inquiries: 9744 5066 or www.sunburyphysiotherapy.com.au

15 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 3, 2015

TRAVEL STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

Lap of luxury in lovely rural setting By Charlene Macaulay When booking a weekend away, three things spring to mind: location, relaxation and good food. Daylesford ticks all those boxes, and more. The town, renowned for its mineral springs and just an easy 70-minute drive from Melbourne’s CBD, offers luxurious accommodation, boutique stores, art galleries and, of course, spa treatments galore. We check in at Ruby’s Amethyst Cottage, a split-level property of rustic charm and within walking distance of the main street and Lake Daylesford. The property, which includes a large-jetted spa and wood fire, is full of thoughtful little touches. The heater is on and the place is nice and warm when we arrive on a winter’s day. There’s an umbrella by the door, blankets on each of the couches and the bed, and a small ‘welcome pack’ in the kitchen, including a bottle of shiraz, coffee, tea, muesli, milk and biscuits. Heading out, there’s nothing better than a walk along the main strip of Vincent Street, where you’re treated to a range of boutique stores, homewares, art galleries and antiques shops. Slightly farther out, there are plenty of day spas around Daylesford and neighbouring Hepburn Springs for anyone looking to soak in the area’s mineral springs, get a massage or be pampered with a facial. We tried out a couples’ massage at The Mineral Spa at Peppers Mineral Springs Hotel, which has its own relaxation room to wait in before the massage and to enjoy a cup of tea afterwards.

Above: Devonshire tea at Vincent Street. Left: Ruby’s Amethyst Cottage. (Charlene Macaulay)

The soothing treatment was reasonably priced – massages can cost a premium out this way – and I’d definitely come back. If you’re not keen on cooking while away, you’ll be spoilt for choice with the many breakfast, lunch and dinner options in the region. The historic Boathouse Cafe, which was destroyed by fire in 2012, was reopened last year and now boasts a new, contemporary fit-out – complete with a rowing boat suspended from

the ceiling – a great breakfast menu and good views of the lake. Bocconcini, a European-style delicatessen cafe, is also a good breakfast option, boasting a hipster vibe that wouldn’t be out of place in Brunswick. For something fancy come dinner time, you can’t go past the Lake House restaurant. Under the direction of executive chef Alla Wolf Tasker and head chef David Green, it offers

seasonal food over two to four tasty courses. Another option is Sault Restaurant, which, under Spanish head chef Santiago Nine-Fernandez, boasts a tapas-style menu. In particular, the Kennedy and Wilson dark chocolate mousse, with liquorice ice-cream, black sesame praline, pistachio and cocoa was a delight. For a quick getaway, you can’t beat Daylesford.

On a hilltop taking in views of the valley below, this double-brick homestead is on about 8.9 hectares of quality grazing land, particularly suited to horses and well watered with two dams (one spring-fed). The house salutes the combination of exposed bricks in most rooms with slate and timber flooring and timber-lined ceilings. The four bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and the main has an en suite. Bathrooms are bright and the laundry is large. Along with a study, there’s a lounge room and a family-meals area with cathedral ceiling and fireplace. The country-style kitchen has a servery window to the meals area, timber benchtops and cabinetry, walk-in pantry, dishwasher, wall oven and cooktop. The back verandah is a peace-lovers’ zone and gardens are attractive and established. In-floor heating, a hay shed and a dual-access garage with space for three cars are included. Beautifully presented, the property is a 40-minute drive from the airport.

Built about 1860 and once a Bank of Victoria, this grand dame – constructed of a mix of double-brick and weatherboard – has an enchanting blend of old and new. Pressed metal ceilings, wide-format floorboards, sash windows, picture rails, fireplaces and French doors to the gracious front verandah – define the old. The rear section is bright and modern and has eco-friendly floorboards. Bedrooms with original floorboards flank the traditional entry hall. A contemporary bathroom with a picture window framing wonderful leafiness is at the back, adjoining an enclosed toilet and laundry. The modern kitchen couples with a large family-meals zone with wood heater. The lounge room in the original section is rich in character. Gardens, with brick-paved walkways and a bluestone-lined pond, have cottage-style plantings, hedging and great trees. Solar panels, solar HWS, a studio/office and double carport and workshop are part of this slice of history.

Flawlessly presented and on a big block of about 2353 square metres, this typically configured modern open-plan abode has a great feeling of space, with elements such as a paned front door admitting light, floorboards that extend down the entry hall to the living hub, wall cavities and wide entry to the bedroom wing. Natural timber plantation shutters and window frames are appealing touches. Of the four bedrooms (there’s a study or fifth bedroom), the main has a walk-in wardrobe and a sleek en suite with dual basins. An open, carpeted lounge room and a rumpus room couple with a family-meals area to provide genuine flexibility. The kitchen has stone benchtops and mod-cons. A paved section off the hub has a plunge spa enclosed with a glass fence, beyond which is the big backyard. An in-ground trampoline, concrete basketball half-court, 13,000-litre water tank, sprinkler system, tool shed and double garage/workshop are desirable finishers.

WOODEND 4 Ashbourne Road, 3442 Joan Gladman: 5427 4307

Price: $630,000

It’s easy to imagine a commuting couple loving this place named Yalooka. That’s not to say downsizers and small families won’t, because it packs a magnetic, character-filled punch that will appeal to many. But back to the commuters. The two-minute stroll to the train station is a great start, but the house itself is such that time spent amid city noise will soon be forgotten at day’s end, while weekends will be a bit of Woodend heaven on a stick. Built soon after World War II, the house remains true to its era, but has been nipped and tucked in all the right places.

3

Private sale An ornate entry hall ceiling, original fireplace, hardwood floorboards, picture rails and sash windows remain, while french doors and a new kitchen, bathroom and powder room have been added. The kitchen’s modern country style doesn’t impose itself on the essence of the house, but strikes just the right note. It has the bling of a Blanco 900mm gas cooker, a Samsung dishwasher and on-trend stainless-steel pendant lights, which fit comfortably with blackwood-topped panelled cabinetry, a moveable island bench and pull-out pantry. The abutting meals and family zones (with floorboards

and a next-door powder room) is warmed by a cute Morso wood heater, complemented This charmer of a space opens via multi-paned french doors onto the full-width back verandah. One of the three boarded bedrooms has a fireplace, while two have white plantation shutters – a lovely touch in living rooms as well. The main bedroom has a fitted walk-in wardrobe and french doors to the verandah. The all-new bathroom (with European laundry) has a clawfoot bath, pedestal basin and frameless shower. An original sash window and picture rail ledge add an older twist.

1

Gardens on this 1074-square-metre block are a treat. The densely planted front garden has roses, lavender, lilacs, rhododendrons and shrubs in a riot of cottage charm. Out back, the beauty goes up a notch with a large swathe of lawn encircled by tall trees, snowball shrubs and other dense leafiness – and garden and wood sheds are tucked among the greenery. A rock-edged vegie patch, storage shed-cum garage and two water tanks are other goodies. Carole Levy

SPORT New bid for the top When Jason Williams was 17, he believed his AFL career was a given. Less than three years later, he would find any excuse to avoid football. But, from the lowest of lows, Williams, now 22, has fallen back in love with Aussie Rules. He spoke to Liam Twomey The 2010 premiership-winning Calder Cannons team was loaded with talent. With the likes of Cam Guthrie, Tom Liberatore and Mitch Wallis running around, it was arguably one of the most exciting TAC Cup outfits of all time. It was also home to a bottom-age rising star who was making a name for himself after moving to Sunbury from Perth a few years earlier. Jason Williams could play anywhere on the ground, use the ball well and had a knack for reading the play. Those talents led to him being selected in the Vic Metro squad, where he was constantly watched and spoken to by AFL recruiters. All indications were it was a matter of when, not if, Williams would be drafted. “It was in that 2010 season I started becoming fully aware of all the possibilities with football and everything I could achieve,” Williams said. “While all that was happening I kind of forgot I had to take care of the rest of my life. “I blocked everything, like school, out in my everyday life and took all that sort of stuff for granted. “I thought footy was going so well I didn’t need that stuff any more.” But, by his own admission, Williams made one of the biggest mistakes of his life in his season as a top-age player at the Cannons. He went into the year thinking he had shown the AFL talent scouts enough of what he could do and his name being read out on draft night would be a formality. It wasn’t, and while a number of his teammates began their careers at the next level, he was left behind. Far from ready to give up on his AFL dream, he was quickly snapped up by VFL club Port Melbourne and again, success followed. Williams and his Borough teammates reached the VFL grand final. But that’s when his journey took a sad turn. “I was 18 or 19 and playing in a VFL finals series; everything was pretty good,” Williams said. “A couple of weeks before the grand final my dad was murdered. “His funeral was in Perth, the day before the grand final. I had to fly over on the Thursday night after training, spend the Friday with my family, bury my dad on the Saturday and then fly back the Saturday night to play on the Sunday.” So desperate was Williams to play in a premiership that he never took the time to fully grieve the loss of his father. Port Melbourne went on to lose the grand final and Williams’ state of mind quickly deteriorated. “I just thought things were going to happen for me and then it reached a point where everything I had planned for didn’t happen,” he said. “Mostly it was my own fault. In that off-season, I fell into a pretty bad place.” Although he didn’t know it at the time, Williams was suffering from depression. As all the aspects of his life started to get tougher, his love of playing football nosedived. He quit playing at Port Melbourne the following year and signed with an Essendon District-based club to try to reignite his passion for the game. But that didn’t work either. Williams would sometimes fail to turn up to training and often didn’t want to pull on the jumper on a Saturday afternoon. “Back then, depression in sport wasn’t even spoken about,” Williams said. “For me, I didn’t understand what was happening, I didn’t understand why I was feeling this way so I just kept sweeping it under the rug.

New green a drawcard Everything is starting to come together off field for the Gisborne Bowls Club – progress it hopes will turn into success on the rinks. After three years of work, the Central Highlands club unveiled its new green in September. Division 1 skipper Glenn Johnston jnr said the green had led to several players joining the club. “It almost became comical,” he said. “We’ve had two or three people signing up each week and there’s now 60 to 70 playing on Saturdays. “We’d be close to the biggest club in the competition.” Anticipating the arrival of new players, Gisborne entered two teams in division 3 to go with sides in divisions 1 and 2. Johnston jnr said several of the new arrivals were front-line players and would be in the mix for the division 1 team. They include Sam Boslem, Peter Clements, Glenn Johnston snr, Conway Bovell, Darren Fletcher, John Bell and Matthew Bacon. Gisborne has won its first four matches in division 1, on Saturday beating Bacchus Marsh 90(14)-80(44). “It’s been pretty great and there’s been a nice spread across the rinks,” Johnston jnr said. “We were lucky that we played a couple of the lesser sides to start with. “The match against Kyneton Golf Gold was our first real test and the next four weeks will give us an indication of where we’re at.” Johnston jnr said the club was looking to end its finals drought. “We want to make the four in division 1. We haven’t played finals in seven or eight years. “Hopefully, it filters down into the lower grades and we get at least two or three sides in finals.” Tara Murray

Burras’ points cap raised Jason Williams is looking to take his talents to the top. (Damjan Janevski)

“I went to work and came home and that was all I could think about. Through that I made a few bad decisions with my life that I am not proud of.” Finally, the turning point arrived for Williams in the form of persistent Diggers Rest Football Club coach Shaun Sims. Sims had been chasing Williams to come and play at his club for two years and leading into the 2014 season he finally got his man. Playing alongside some of his childhood friends and for a supportive committee and coaching staff, the fire started to burn again for Williams. After finding his feet in his first season at the club, Williams spent most of his off-season working with a children’s charity in Mexico. It was there he realised how lucky he was to be in a position where he could still chase his dreams. He returned to pre-season training with the Burras and took on an assistant coaching role at the club. He also told Sims of his goal to lead the club to a premiership and win the best and fairest award. He came within a whisker

of delivering, with Diggers Rest finishing runner-up with Williams named the club’s best player for the season. “When I got to Diggers, the love of football was back,” he said. “It is such an amazing feeling to walk into a place where you aren’t just there to play for yourself any more. You’re there to play for the people who make the club what it is. “Shaun is an amazing person and I owe him so much. As soon as I met him I just felt like me going to Diggers was always meant to happen.” With his passion for the game recaptured, so too has Williams’ hunger to join his former teammates in the AFL. The 22-year-old has already contacted Port Melbourne coach Gary Ayres and has been told he is welcome back at the club next season. “Now I’m at a stage in my life where I understand the balance between life and footy and I understand the steps that need to happen for me to take that next step. When I was younger, I assumed it was just going to be given to me. Now I fully understand that I have to earn it and that’s what I’m going to do.”

AFL Goldfields has granted Diggers Rest two extra points for next season’s player points cap, giving it a 44-point total. The region’s governing body initially knocked back the Burras’ application for increased points, instead choosing to monitor the situation at the Riddell District Football League club. However, Diggers Rest president Chris Payne met with representatives from AFL Goldfields last week to argue the Burras’ case. “We’re very happy with the outcome,” Payne said afterwards. “I think we had a very strong case, and it was all down to the population base in the area and us only having 58 junior kids at the club. “It really puts us on the back foot compared to other clubs. We believe we need those extra points to be able to compete with clubs that have junior players coming in as one-point players.” ■ Full

Tables turned on leaders By Tara Murray Six months can make a big difference in cricket, as Sunbury and Sunbury United are learning. Last season’s Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup grand finalists are both winless after three matches in 2015-16. On Saturday, both teams needed a miracle to pull off wins. Romsey had already taken first innings points against Sunbury and was on the hunt for outright points. Romsey declared at 8-213 to hold a 127-run first innings lead.

Sunbury captain Jason McGann ensured his side wouldn’t be dismissed cheaply a second time, contributing 99 to the second innings of 3-179. United needed quick wickets against Diggers Rest Bulla, but it wasn’t to be. Led by captain Rhys Berry, the Burras passed United’s total of 96 with six wickets down. Berry top-scored with 31 in the Burras’ 162. United finished its second innings at 4-56. Riddell remains the only unbeaten side in the top grade after easily accounting for Gisborne.

Gisborne signs former Richmond coach Gieschen Former Richmond coach Jeff Gieschen is keen to help Gisborne rebuild and regain powerhouse status in the Bendigo Football League. Gieschen, who coached the Tigers from 1997 to ’99 and also spent time as the AFL umpires’ boss, has been involved with the Bulldogs since applying for the club’s coaching role two years ago. Circumstances meant Gieschen had to pull out of that race, but things have changed. Last week, the Bulldogs named Gieschen as their coach for next year. “It’s a terrific little club,” the coach says. “I want to support them however I can.” Despite not having an official coaching role

at a football club since 1999, Gieschen stayed involved with football, first as umpires boss then in a consulting role. He doesn’t shy away from the challenges ahead. The club finished sixth this year and several senior players have departed or are looking at leaving, including Tom Waters, Matthew Knox and Casey Summerfield, who have signed with Macedon. He said he and the club would continue to talk with the players thinking about leaving but would also focus on youth. “We’re building from the bottom up,” he said. “There are plenty of young kids in Gisborne

who will have the opportunity to play senior football in the Bendigo Football League. “The number one thing for the club is to foster and develop young talent,” Gieschen said. “We will work hard, but we will also have fun.” Bulldogs president Colin Rodgers said the club couldn’t have found a better person to take on the coaching role. “It’s a fantastic appointment for the club – we are rapt to get someone of Jeff’s quality,” Rodgers said. “You are always hopeful of getting someone of his calibre to apply, but you’re never sure.”

The president said Gieschen’s coaching experience was exactly what the club needed. “As well as being experienced, Jeff is a strong leader,” he said. “He’s a good communicator and we need that around the club. He fits in well with what we want.” Both men said the club would be looking to recruit players in the off-season. “We’ll be recruiting as we need some senior players at the club to provide leadership and bigger bodies,” Rodgers said. Jarrad Lynch has been named Bulldogs’ captain for next year. Tara Murray

Gun Kiwi coach to steer Jets By Tara Murray Sunbury Jets Basketball Association has made a big statement ahead of next season’s Big V season, appointing New Zealand national women’s coach Kennedy Kereama as its women’s coach for the next two years. And in a bigger boost for Sunbury, Kereama will have dual roles after also being appointed director of coaching. The New Zealand national said he had no hesitation about making the move to Sunbury from Perth, where he coached WNBL team West Coast Waves, now known as Perth Lynx. “I guess there are a few contributing factors to signing with Sunbury,” Kereama told Star Weekly. “I had a conversation with Andrew [Summerville, Sunbury operations manager] about the direction he and the board are looking to take. “I had some skill sets that were potentially desirable to the club and we talked about the strategic direction of the club and my values aligned with theirs. It was a no-brainer.”

I want to shake up the league. I want to win the competition

-Kennedy Kereama

Kereama, a former coach of SEABL club Sandringham, said he was not quite sure when he would arrive in Sunbury but he and his partner always planned to move back to Melbourne and this provided the perfect opportunity. “This opportunity is the ticket to make the shift a little bit earlier,” he said. “And it’s a lot closer to New Zealand, which also makes it a smart move. “Meeting people and being shown around Sunbury, I knew it was right.” He said the director of coaching role would help provide him with stable employment in the industry. The role will see Kereama work closely with the club’s junior representative players and coaches in many development programs across all age groups. “I’m passionate about the development of people and basketball and I’m looking forward to sharing my experience with coaches and players and making a positive impact around the club,” he said. “I was starting to take time to think about the workforce within basketball and looking for a more stable role than just coaching teams in the WNBL, where you’re always fighting for your job. The director of coaching role just made sense.” Kereama, who has spent time helping Fiji national teams in recent months, has big ambitions at the Jets. “I want to really shake up the league,” he said. “I have big expectations on myself and I want to win the competition. “I’ve always been a development coach and the program will take time. We’ll look to recruit players. No one will be handed a singlet,

it will have to be earned. There’s a lot I could say that I’ll do, but the first task is identifying young talent.” Kereama wants the Jets to be a place where players play before moving to higher levels. “We’re looking to build the program over a number of years,” he said. “We want higher levels to see us as a club where they can draw on the development we’ve done with our players. “There could be a high turnover of players with players coaching to high levels, WNBL, College, AIS. We want to be getting them ready for WNBL.” One of Kereama’s aims is to get back young players from Sunbury who are playing with other Big V and SEABL sides. “There are lots of players who have come through the program and moved on,” he said. “Sara Blicavs and Kayla Theodore are a

couple of examples. I’ll target some of these players to get them back to Sunbury, although getting Sara back would be a big ask. I’ll target some of the younger players who have left.” Kereama’s commitments with New Zealand’s Tall Ferns will mean he will miss some Jets games. Former WNBL player and assistant coach Lisa Townsend has been appointed as Jets assistant coach and will take the reins while Kereama is away. “I’m really happy to have Lisa onboard and we’ve had a working relationship before,” he said. “She’s a straight shooter and I trust her and she’s probably good enough to be head coach. It’s good to have a female role model who played in the WNBL.” Sunbury Basketball Association president Glenn Ogston is thrilled with the appointment

of Kereama, as the club now has four coaches with WNBL or NBL coaching experience. Kereama joins Andrew Summerville, Andrew Seidel and Brian Ogilvie as the Jets’ four coaches. “What struck the board, possibly more than his resume, was Kennedy’s ambition to work with us to deliver sustained improvement in our players, coaches and programs,” Ogston said. “His appointment, in conjunction with other recent additions in basketball operations manager, Andrew Summerville and junior development officer, Chris Tighe sends a clear message to our members and basketball lovers in the region that we are equally committed and equipped to provide elite opportunities as we are to community based participation programs.”
