It’s show time, folks
(Joe Mastroianni)
An animal nursery, farm shed, pet parade, giant maze and free activity zone are just a few of the things that will catch the attention of children like Scarlett, Poppy, Thomas and Gus (pictured) at this week’s Kyneton Show. The 155th event will also include Kyneton Idol, a ute muster, carnival, youth tent, and fireworks on Friday evening, as well as traditional agricultural show events on Saturday. Agricultural society secretary Josephine Rutledge says a new 40 x 10-metre haybale maze will add to the many free activities that proved popular last year. The maze will be filled with quizzes to make getting out even more of a challenge. ‘‘We’ve worked really hard to ensure that once families go in the gates, there’s something free for them to do the entire day, whether its woodwork or playing with the animals, riding the crazy bikes or having a pony ride,’’ Ms Rutledge says. Young local talent, including Mosey, Jimmy and Paige, and Point of No Return, will hit the stage as part of the council’s Music in the Sticks program. Entries for art classes close Wednesday. Tickets: $10 adults; $5 children and concession. Details: www.kynetonshow.org.au Matt Crossman
Top posts for old hands By Matt Crossman Veteran Macedon Ranges councillors John Letchford and John Connor appear set to take the reins of the municipality in what’s expected to be their last year in local government. Sources indicate that Cr Letchford is likely to be the only candidate for the top job when this year’s mayoral election is held on Wednesday evening. Cr Letchford, who served a term as mayor in 2008-09, said that, if successful, he would push for two-time mayor Cr Connor as his deputy. ‘‘We have a number of strategies and plans to get down quickly, in a very tight budget
and facing challenges with changes to the Local Government Act and rate capping,’’ Cr Letchford said. ‘‘The state government calls it fair. We’re calling it idiotic, stupid and ridiculous. ‘‘Someone of my ilk and nature has to stand up and be seen to be leading that charge against what is a lack of voice and leadership.’’ Cr Letchford, who is entering his 17th year on council, said he wanted to lead a team that worked together. ‘‘You don’t want this continual division creeping into the council chamber,’’ he said. Cr Letchford said he was also keen to bring community groups around the table with the

‘‘He’s very much by the book and runs a very good meeting. His knowledge after 17 years in local government is quite deep. If council gives him the opportunity, it’s a great way to go out.’’ Cr Connor, who will have been on council for 10 years at the end of the current term, said he was keen to serve as deputy mayor. ‘‘We’re going to have to tighten our belt but make sure we get the important stuff done,’’ he said. ‘‘I think that’s where experience will come into play.’’ Wednesday’s special meeting of council will be held at the Gisborne administration centre, starting at 5.30pm.

council, ‘‘as long as they’re prepared to meet us halfway’’. Outgoing mayor Jennifer Anderson confirmed she had no plans to seek re-election. ‘‘It’s been a great year, but it’s time for somebody else to have a go,’’ she said. Current deputy mayor Russell Mowatt, who hasn’t entirely ruled out standing, said it appeared Cr Letchford had the numbers. ‘‘I think Jennifer’s done a fantastic job. She’s very articulate and done very well indeed.’’ Former mayor Roger Jukes said it would be fitting for Cr Letchford to sit in the chair at the end of a ‘‘pretty impressive’’ local government career.

Many slack with fire preparation By Matt Crossman Hundreds of repeat offenders are among people already put on notice as part of Macedon Ranges council’s annual sweep of fire-prone areas. The council is about halfway through inspections of private land and has issued more than 470 fire prevention notices. A total of 750 notices were handed out last year. Council community safety manager AnneLouise Lindner told Star Weekly close to half of those already warned had received clean-up notices in previous years.
‘‘Quite a lot of them appear to be absentee landowners,’’ she said. Notices are issued for properties deemed to be fire hazards. If the notice is not complied with in the specified timeframe, the council will carry out the works and bill the landowner, on top of issuing a $1517 fine. Ms Lindner urged owners who had received a notice to act quickly. ‘‘Preventing fires is everyone’s responsibility and a well maintained property will help reduce the risk of fire to our community, including you and your neighbours,’’ she said. The council recently prosecuted five
landowners who failed to comply with notices issued last year. In each case, the magistrate fined the owners and ordered them to pay the council’s contractor as well as court costs. Mountain group CFA spokesman Mike Dornau welcomed the council’s tough stance. ‘‘There are a lot of people who do the right thing, but there are a lot of people who don’t,’’ Mr Dornau said. ‘‘We’ve all got to do our bit and keep things clear.’’ Having attended a presentation made to CFA personnel last Thursday night, Mr Dornau said the council’s fire management team was ‘‘doing really excellent work’’.
‘‘They’ve been allocating specific areas to get property owners to cut fire breaks so that they become part of the defence system on particular roads. I think that’s a great move.” About 1000 kilometres of council-managed roads are due to be slashed over coming weeks as the council steps up its own program. Mr Dornau said recent cool weather was no reason to be complacent. ‘‘It can be hard for people living near the townships to comprehend, but we were out near Ashbourne the other day and up at Mount Macedon on Wednesday … you get into the bush and it’s crackling under your feet.”

Macedon wines a perfect match With its 2007 pinot noir, Pegeric was recognised for having the world’s best wine with sweet and sour pork, and it had the best wine with steamed garoupa fish (2009 pinot noir). The winery, which makes only 100 to 200 cases a year, also claimed two second-place finishes, as well medals – four gold, four silver and three bronze – in the regular competition. Winemaker Chris Cormack said he was elated with the success of his wines, grown on a single two-hectare vineyard planted in 1991.

‘‘My wine just seems to go well with wine and food categories,’’ he said. ‘‘I’ve been told that the judges are generally used to trying French burgundy a lot, so maybe my wines are emulating that more than a lot of other typical Australian wines.’’ Mr Cormack, who is exploring export opportunities in Asia as a result of the wins, said the high acidity of Macedon Ranges wines meant those with a bit of ‘‘bottle age’’ tended to fare well. ‘‘The region’s wines really start to shine when they’re five to six years old.’’

A small Macedon Ranges vineyard is the toast of the wine world after winning two trophies at a major international competition. Tylden-based Pegeric Wines was selected ahead of some of the world’s biggest names in blind tests at the Hong Kong International Wine and Spirit Competition. The competition distinguishes itself from many others by judging wines when matched with food. A dozen classic dishes are nominated from national cuisines, with winemakers entering wines to suit.
Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan has been urged to clarify her plans for access to V/Line services in Sunbury. Speaking in state Parliament last Tuesday, Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Bernie Finn said it was time for Ms Allan to confirm or deny that Sunbury commuters caught using country services would be fined $435 from January 1. Mr Finn said comments made by Ms Allan at a public meeting in Sunbury last month had given some people hope that the mooted train service changes might not occur in their entirety. ‘‘I would hate to think that the minister had instilled them with false hope,’’ he said. ‘‘It is absolutely incumbent on the minister to come clean and tell the people of Sunbury what she has in mind.’’ As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, restrictions barring Sunbury commuters from V/Line trains will not be enforced until next January but passengers are being actively discouraged from getting on board in the meantime. The changes, prompted by the completion of the Regional Rail Link, aim to reduce overcrowding on Bendigo-bound trains. The government recently added 10 extra peak-time Metro services a week with the promise of more to come. But critics say the changes, with access to more than 200 services to be removed, are unfair to Sunbury passengers. A government spokesman did not respond by deadline.

Mia’s smiles ahead A Sunbury girl born with a rare respiratory condition has her sights set on becoming a zookeeper after graduating from a learning program designed to help her keep up at school. St Anne’s Primary School pupil Mia McKercher received special tutoring after regularly missing school days due to her condition. Mia, 9, was born with an abnormal connection between the upper part of the oesophagus and windpipe. She underwent surgery to correct the condition when she was a day old but continues to be susceptible to sickness. Mia’s mother, Victoria, says she was enrolled in the Ronald McDonald Learning Program after staff at the Royal Children’s Hospital noticed she was falling behind in her school work. ‘‘A lot of it was anxiety,’’ Ms McKercher said.
‘‘Often she knew the work but she would get anxious and the tears would well up.’’ Tutors tailored a special program that took Mia through what she would be learning in class ahead of time. They also worked to improve her speech, which had been affected by her condition. ‘‘That gave her the confidence to have a go,’’ Ms McKercher says. ‘‘She’s a completely different kid now. She’s so happy.’’ Cold weather still presents some problems for Mia. ‘‘But because she’s happy to go to school and be with her friends I think her health has improved as well,’’ Ms McKercher says. ‘‘She’s having a lot less sick days now.’’ For more details on the Ronald McDonald Learning Program, visit www.rmhc.org.au. Council: never mind the bollards By Matt Crossman Hume council has defended its decision to throw out brightly painted concrete bollards as part of major upgrades to Sunbury’s O’Shanassy Street. A number of people were angered last week when the remains of some of the street art items, painted by residents and community groups in 2014, were spotted in landfill. Some of the colourful bollards depicted key moments in the area’s history, including the Sunbury pop festivals of the 1970s. Council acting city infrastructure director
‘‘
They could have been given to community groups - Sunbury resident or even sold
John Monaghan said the art was completed on the understanding that the bollards would remain in place until the streetscape was upgraded. ‘‘The paint on the bollards had worn and it was not possible to excavate the bollards without damaging the artwork,’’ he said. ‘‘While we would have liked to relocate the bollards to another location, these concrete cylinders could not be excavated in a manner that left the artwork intact.’’ A Sunbury resident, who did not want to be named, said that while she understood the council’s rationale she believed some of the
’’
bollards could have been saved. She said some residents had rescued bollards from the tip and placed them in their backyards. ‘‘They could have been given to community groups or even sold,’’ she said. “Some of them aren’t badly damaged.” She said the situation should have been handled better.
“People should have been given the option,’’ she said. Mr Monaghan said the council had taken professional photographs of the art featured on each bollard. ‘‘We would welcome any ideas on where these photos could be displayed,’’ he said. Mr Monaghan said the O’Shanassy streetscape project, which is almost complete, would encourage outdoor dining and entice more people to visit the precinct. Footpaths, seating and lighting have all been upgraded, while powerlines have been moved underground.

BreastScreen upgrade a ‘lifesaver’ By Matt Crossman The opening of a permanent BreastScreen Victoria clinic in Sunbury will undoubtedly save lives, according to a local nurse who underwent a lumpectomy, double mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy after being diagnosed with cancer. Sunbury’s Geraldine Wilson said the clinic, which will open in Horne Street in March, would lead to more women getting checked
more frequently. As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, data released in August revealed that less than 60 per cent of women aged 50 to 69 in the Sunbury and Macedon electorates were tested by BreastScreen Victoria between 2012 and 2014. The clinic will replace BreastScreen’s mobile screening van, which will leave Sunbury in December. ‘‘This will be far more accessible,’’ Ms Wilson said. ‘‘Having the van come in every now and
then is wonderful, but this will be so much better. It will be in front of women … they will drive past and see it, and when they’ve found something irregular they will go in and do something about it.’’ The clinic, which will be managed in partnership with Lake Imaging, will be fully digital and feature the latest breast cancer screening technology. BreastScreen chief executive Vicki Pridmore said regular tests were the best way to detect
cancer early, when treatment was likely to be most successful. ‘‘We’re thrilled to be able to provide this year-round service to the women of the area, who have shown fantastic support through their use of our mobile van,’’ she said. With 50 per cent of women diagnosed with breast cancer being aged 50 to 69, authorities recommend that women in this age group be tested at least once every two years. More than 300 pupils from Goonawarra Primary School have hopped, stepped and jumped their way around a Tough Mudder-style obstacle course. Children including Kaylee-Shae (pictured) took great delight in scaling army netting, dodging water pistol spray and leaping over hay bales as part of Goonawarrior, a fresh spin on the school’s traditional ‘‘lapathon’’. Principal Allan Fairweather said money raised by last Wednesday’s event would go towards a new outdoor seating area. Creation of a community vegetable garden is another idea being considered.

Carbon-neutral quest By Matt Crossman A group calling on Macedon Ranges council to be decisive and show leadership on climate change is now set to stage a ‘‘people’s rally’’ through Kyneton, after handing the council a 3500-signature petition. The Macedon Ranges Green Energy Coalition wants the council to commit to becoming carbon neutral by 2020 and is pushing for solar panels to go on all council buildings, at an estimated cost of $1 million. The group is also seeking a stand-alone climate change policy for the municipality. Supporters gathered outside Kyneton town hall last Tuesday as the petition was handed in. The council has previously said emissions reduction targets and solar panel installations would be considered as part of its new environment strategy, but it said the coalition’s suggested timeframe was ‘‘not feasible’’. Coalition co-ordinator Rob Bakes said the petition showed residents were sick of talk and wanted action. He said the move to clean energy also made economic sense. ‘‘Council could save precious rate revenue by installing panels on its main assets,’’ Mr Bakes said. ‘‘Even with 100 per cent borrowing and no government grants, the rooftop solar project would save the council money from day one [and] be completely paid off within seven years.’’ Mr Bakes said the council was ‘‘ideally placed’’ to benefit from solar power, with most of its electricity use occurring during the day. Mayor Jennifer Anderson has agreed to table the petition at the next council meeting, a few days prior to the ‘people’s rally’ on November 29. People will march from Quarry Reserve to the Mechanics Institute. Details: goo.gl/XlSKoL

Minister proud of ‘split’ stance Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins has defended the state government’s decision to reverse legislation that would have given Sunbury its own council. During question time in Parliament last week, Opposition Leader Matthew Guy demanded to know why the government had scrapped plans for the new council, having earlier acknowledged the matter had been ‘‘finalised’’ by the former Liberal government. ‘‘Why has the minister broken her promise?’’ Mr Guy said, sparking interjections from both sides. Ms Hutchins said the government was ‘‘very proud’’ that it had protected residents’ interests and needs. ‘‘We have done the responsible thing,’’ she said. ‘‘We appointed transitional auditors of the highest order to go in and have a look at the mess that was left behind by those opposite, who in the dead of night put an order through to allow a split … which would see a 14.5 per cent rate increase imposed on the people of Sunbury.’’ Ms Hutchins maintained the transition audit showed the previous government had ‘‘messed up’’ the Sunbury out of Hume issue. Mr Guy has written to the Sunbury Residents Association to guarantee that he will deliver an independent Sunbury under a future Liberal government.

If these walls could talk … Sunbury residents can take a look inside some of the town’s oldest buildings this Saturday. St Mary’s Anglican Church in O’Shanassy Street, completed in 1867, the Lutheran Church on the corner of Brook and Jackson streets and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Macedon Street will be open from 11am-4pm. St Andrews Uniting Church, corner of Brook and Barkly streets, will be open from 8.30am-3.30pm. The open day coincides with a car boot sale on the Village Green and craft stalls in the St Andrews church hall. Construction of the bluestone Our Lady of Mount Carmel church began in November 1864 and the church took more than 10 years to complete.
Smoke ban trial approved Smoking will be forbidden in a popular Sunbury dining precinct from March, with Hume council agreeing to a 12-month trial ban. People will be unable to light up in O’Shanassy Street East, between Station and Brook streets, with the ban extending from shopfronts to the road, including kerbs. The trial, which aims to strengthen the street’s reputation as a premier dining precinct, comes after Sunbury Business Association and Sunbury Community Health backed a campaign led by traders, including Vic and Carmel Scerri, of Vic’s Food and Wine. As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, an overwhelming majority of residents surveyed late last year said they would welcome restrictions. Mr Scerri said the ban would benefit people working, shopping and eating in the street’s shops and cafes. ‘‘Nobody wants to have someone blowing smoke at them,’’ Mr Scerri said. The council expects most people will voluntarily comply with the ban. ‘‘The smoke-free area will be clearly signed,’’ a report stated. ‘‘Fines may apply if a person fails to comply.’’ Quit Victoria supports the creation of smoke-free outdoor dining and drinking areas across the state. The council will collect feedback about the trial before considering permanent measures. Details: goo.gl/Aev9O6 Matt Crossman

Sunbury’s push for local ‘spend’
’’
McEwen MP Rob Mitchell slammed the federal government for ignoring Sunbury when handing out $4million in grants for projects under the second round of the Melbourne’s North Innovation and Investment Fund. ‘‘We are seeing extraordinary residential growth in the outer north, but we are not seeing the investment from the federal government that will support jobs in our communities,’’ he said. ‘‘It has shunned Sunbury and our communities in the Calder corridor.’’ Mr Mitchell said the area didn’t need any more people trying to drive on already congested roads, because they had no choice but to drive south in the morning and north in the afternoon. ‘‘What we need is job investment close to the communities that are growing.’’

KRYSTYNA RODIC
Path to a better world A simple Google search of volunteering opportunities set a Sunbury teenager on a path to helping orphans in Vietnam or Uganda. Krystyna Rodic, 16, is looking to raise $2500 so she can support Global Volunteer Network’s mission to help community organisations in one of the two countries. She’s already received a $500 network scholarship and completed preliminary training, as she looks to join the organisation’s 20,000 volunteers around the world sometime next year. ‘‘I was just looking up volunteering stuff, because it can be really hard to find something for people under 18,’’ Krystyna says. ‘‘I came across GVN and found it really interesting, so
I decided to register to volunteer.’’ Krystyna’s dedication to helping others isn’t something new – a couple of years ago the Gisborne Secondary College student shaved her head for a cancer charity. As a young child, she would collect donations from relatives for impromptu raffles to help people less fortunate than herself. ‘‘I’ve been raised in a good family and had lots of good things happen in my life,’’ Krystyna says. ‘‘I’ve got so much, I’m not going to stop helping people until the world is a better place.’’ To donate, visit goo.gl/EzSTSM Matt Crossman

I don’t think the economy is as great as it’s being made - Michael Osborne out to be
(Damjan Janevski)
Greater investment and increased community awareness are the keys to unlocking a town’s business potential, Sunbury Business Association president Michael Osborne says. Speaking ahead of a Labor Party jobs forum at Sunbury on Monday night, Mr Osborne said business and community leaders needed to work together to stop some of the town’s $72 million being spent at major shopping and commercial centres in other areas. “If we can contain some of that and keep it within the community, businesses will be stronger and employ more people,” he said. “It’s self-fulfilling in a sense.” Mr Osborne said that while there was a general buoyancy around town, retail remained a struggle. ‘‘I don’t think the economy is as great as it’s being made out to be,’’ he said. ‘‘But a lot of it also comes down to that awareness. ‘‘Businesses that really understand what it is they provide, and promote that, are doing okay.’’ Mr Osborne said streetscape improvements and efforts to turn O’Shanassy Street into a foodie hub would draw more people to the town centre. He said the recent arrival of chain stores, such as The Good Guys, and future developments including a Dan Murphy’s store in Horne Street, were also welcome. ‘‘Some people say it might be detrimental, but I think, ultimately, if you want people
to shop here, you’ve got to give them some choice. ‘‘There’ll be people who want big brands and range, and there’ll be others who want service. ‘‘They should be able to pick either one and it’s up to the business owners to determine which market to play in, and tailor their business accordingly.’’

Sunbury’s streets ahead By Matt Crossman In a changing world, small businesses continue to be the glue that binds communities like Sunbury together, the team behind the third annual StreetLife festival believes. This Sunday’s showcase of small businesses will include 120 stalls, live entertainment, a rock climbing wall and miniature train rides in O’Shanassy and Brook streets. Yarn-bombed trees and bright pom-poms created by primary school pupils will add colour to the streets. Spokeswoman Sharyn Snook says the team of four volunteers behind the festival have worked hard to put on an event designed to increase awareness of local businesses and promote lasting connections. ‘‘That’s really important these days,’’ spokeswoman Sharyn Snook says. ‘‘We all live and work differently than we used to. ‘‘It’s really important to have those times to remind ourselves that, even though Sunbury is getting bigger, we need to keep that community spirit, so that when you go down the street, people are always asking you how you’re doing,” she says. ‘‘After all, that’s what we all love.’’ Ms Snook says despite what many people think, small businesses can often provide goods and services for less than the major chains. ‘‘I have nothing against big shopping centres, but there’s a lot you can get here in town and it doesn’t have to cost more,’’ she says. ‘‘Another thing is that you have people who take an interest in you. Most of them know you, know what your kids are into, and I don’t think you get that at many bigger stores. It’s that feeling that you’re important.’’ Ms Snook says StreetLife aims to remind people of the benefits of ‘‘buying local’’ where
Sunbury StreetLife Festival organisers Hannah Liddle and Sharyn Snook. (Damjan Janevski)
possible. ‘‘I would encourage people to think about it, because the more money that’s spent in our local community, the more money goes back into it. If each person spent $20 extra a week locally … imagine the benefit that would bring to the town.’’
Proceeds from this year’s festival will go to Sunbury Rotary’s community kitchen and Wesley Mission Victoria. StreetLife is from 10am until 3pm. For more details about the festival phone 0418 403 346.

Numbers build for cancer relay Organisers of Sunbury’s Relay for Life are asking anyone whose life has been touched by cancer to sign up for this weekend’s charity event. Chairwoman Shara Turner says registrations will be taken at Boardman Reserve on Saturday ahead of the overnight relay, which raises money for Cancer Council Victoria. ‘‘We’ve got 80 to 100 people already registered, but we’re expecting quite a few more will register on the day,’’ Ms Turner says. This year’s event will include children’s entertainment and a candlelight ceremony to commemorate loved ones lost. Live music from acts including Sunbury classic rockers Roadhouse will add to the colour of the event. More than 300 people took to the town’s Little Athletics track last year, raising $52,000 to help Cancer Council Victoria conduct research and provide support services for people affected by the disease. Ms Turner, whose father died of esophageal cancer last year, says it’s rare to meet a person who hasn’t loved someone affected by the disease. ‘‘Unfortunately, it’s one of those diseases you can’t get away from,’’ Ms Turner says. ‘‘Everyone knows someone who’s had it .’’ For more details, phone 1300 656 585 or visit www.relayforlife.org.au. In a quiet court on a large 1095 square metre block close to the town centre, this beautifully presented dwelling has a lovely light and airy feel, with mostly white wall paint, neutral carpet and polished hardwood floorboards. Spacious living areas include a carpeted lounge-dining room with multi-paned windows and a split-system; and a carpeted family room with clerestory windows (next to a fabulous meals zone), with wood heater and floorboards and ceiling with painted boards and exposed beams. The kitchen (same ceiling) has a garden outlook, loads of white cupboards, dishwasher, underbench oven and gas cooktop. The laundry also has great storage. Two of the three bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and share a crisp white bathroom, while the main has a walk-through wardrobe and en suite. There’s an open study near the living hub. Elevated verandahs are the perfect alfresco area at the back. Ducted heating and a double garage are other features.
Handsome on about 0.61 hectares, this fine abode has the crowning distinction of a self-contained suite including large bedroom, bathroom and a breakfast nook-cum study, linked with the rest of the house and just to the right of the entry walkway – ideal as a B&B or a retreat for extended family. An open lounge room at the front joins with a large, tiled family-meals zone. The kitchen, with laundry next door, has a breakfast bench and 900mm gas cooktop. Four more bedrooms are upstairs, as is a living room, bathroom and separate toilet. The main bedroom up here has a large bay window defining a retreat space, with a walk-in wardrobe and en suite. The gardens include expansive lawns, fruit trees, a vegie patch and, best of all, a studio/garden retreat. A double carport completes the picture of modern living in a village renowned for its old-world feel.

This distinctive weatherboard abode on about 1000 square metres (30-metre, north-facing frontage) has a beach-house vibe with its limewashed walls and timber-lined ceilings, sure to tempt first-home buyers, a retired couple or an investor looking for rental income of about $300 a week. Three bedrooms, each with a wardrobe, share a newly renovated bathroom and a separate toilet. The living room, with floating floorboards and sheers at the windows, has a wood heater for winter and a light-bright feel for summer. The large kitchen has plenty of benchspace and a gas upright cooker. Along with a three-metre deep return verandah, there’s a covered pergola under which to relax overlooking landscaped gardens. An 18 x 8-metre steel shed with concrete floor and power connection contains a teen retreat, with enough space to pursue a hobby or trade. A split-system, town gas and sewerage, carport and wrought-iron gate entry are other features.
At the end of a country lane on about 1.62 hectares, New Wonnerup is a garden sanctuary that also, with the addition of a fence, could run a pony on lush pasture with shade trees, an efficient bore and a picturesque dam. The homestead-style house has three bedrooms, the main with full en suite. A nearby rumpus room could also serve as a fourth bedroom with its own private entry, ideal as a teen retreat or home business space. A carpeted lounge-dining room with split-system connects with the kitchen, where there’s a walk-in pantry, new dishwasher and a gas cooktop. A full-width verandah is the spot to soak up garden views, where a timber bridge (near the dam), mass bulb planting, an orchard, botanically rare plantings and an array of English trees put on a fine, park-like show. A number of sheds, a fernery and a remote-controlled garage/workshop are other inclusions.

A long, agapanthus-edged driveway – with tall cypresses and an array of exotics down one side, and a vast velvety lawn on the other – makes an enchanting introduction to this property on the northern edge of town. The place has effortless refinement in its DNA. The house is a timeless classic: elegant, subtle and eminently liveable. The graceful gardens on the block of about 1.3 hectares are a beautifully designed mosaic of greens and silver-blues with underplantings of showy rhododendrons,
camellias and cottage blooms, while cypresses shelter and seclude on all sides. Beyond the front verandah with box-seat garden views, the tiled foyer has a study to the left (with garage access) and, opposite, a large, east-facing lounge-dining room with bay window, feature light fittings and a cast-iron Jetmaster fireplace set within a cream-painted period-style surround. The big kitchen, next to tiled meals and carpeted family zones, has magnificent garden views, a stack of American oak cupboards, a two-door pantry, dishwasher,
wall oven and 900-millimetre gas cooktop. The main bedroom (off the foyer) has built-in and walk-in wardrobes, and a huge en suite with a spa, dual vanity basins and an enclosed toilet. Two more bedrooms are down a hallway, as are the immaculate main bathroom; a laundry with enclosed toilet, cupboards and workbench; and a storage room. The family room opens to an elevated, covered deck with a timber-topped bar. This wraps around to the back where gardens continue to be a treat with many silver

birches, dense plantings and a brick-edged garden planted with dahlias. Near the back of the block is an orchard with chestnut, cherry, stone fruit and olive trees. Beyond are two watered pony paddocks, one with a shelter. Also included are gas ducted heating, ducted vacuum, split-system, triple insulation, remote-controlled double garage, caravan port, tank and town water, and a two-car Colorbond garage. Carole Levy

41 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 17, 2015
SPORT Luckless Sunbury finds a win at last Sunbury is finally on the winners’ list after four rounds of Gisborne and District Cricket’s McIntyre Cup. Last year’s runners-up struggled with availability and injury in the first three rounds, leaving them bottom of the ladder. All that changed with victory over Gisborne on Saturday. After declaring at 9-152 on day one of the match a week earlier, Sunbury put Gisborne on the back foot at 4-45 early on day two. And despite a middle-order fightback, Gisborne was all out for 146. Sunbury captain Jason McGann (45) top-scored with the bat and was also the pick of the bowlers with 5-42. Sunbury secretary Marty Kelders said availability had been a big issue early on.
“Key players have only been available for a couple of matches,” he said. “And Justin Nelson, who came across from Flemington, broke his finger in the second game and hasn’t played since. “It upset our batting a little.” Kelders said the off-season losses of Jason Elliott and Mark Corcoran were also having an impact. “We did our best to recruit players, but players have chosen not to come to Sunbury,” he said. “We haven’t been able to replace players we’ve lost. “We’ve got young talent coming through, but it takes a couple of years to get them up to McIntyre Cup standard.” Kelders said the Landt brothers, Jack and Dylan, were younger players leading the way.
“Dylan played a few matches last year and Jack is coming of age,” he said. Kelders said that despite the poor start to the season, all was not doom and gloom at Sunbury . . . the club had only one win from the opening six matches last season before going on to make the grand final. “Jason [McGann] is our key and if we can build our team around him we will be competitive,” Kelders said. “The next couple of matches, against Diggers Rest Bulla and Sunbury United, could have a big bearing on the season. “It’s a really tight competition and we need things to go our way again. If we can get players on the park, people had better watch out.” Tara Murray

Riddell bowlers in charge By Tara Murray A Woodend collapse ensured Riddell continued its winning ways in the Gisborne and District Cricket’s McIntyre Cup on Saturday. After starting the season with three straight wins, Riddell set Woodend a target of 199 to win the round-four clash. Woodend was travelling nicely at 3-101. But then the Riddell bowlers took control and Woodend lost 7-26 to be all out for 127. Matthew Livingstone and Cameron Moran took three wickets apiece, with six bowlers taking at least one wicket. Diggers Rest Bulla’s hot start in its return to the top grade continued with outright victory over Romsey. After making 217 on day one the previous weekend, the Burras bowled Romsey out twice on Saturday.
Romsey made only 46 in the first innings, with no player reaching double figures. The Burras needed only three bowlers, with captain Rhys Berry the chief destroyer with 7-21 from 14 overs. The scoreboard was only slightly better in the second innings as Romsey was bowled out for 81. Darren Quarell took 5-12 off 13.4 overs to take seven for the match, while Berry grabbed another two to take his total to nine. Sunbury United opened its account for the season with victory over Bacchus Marsh. Needing 233 for victory, United reached the target easily with five wickets in hand. Ryan Billinghurst was the star, making 97 in his side’s total of 5-237. In the B-grade competition, Rupertswood and St Anthonys continued on their winning ways.
42 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 17, 2015
It was an easy victory for Rupertswood who bowled Bacchus Marsh out for just 55, thanks mainly to Lachlan McLean’s 4-16. Leading by 187 on the first innings, Rupertswood sent Bacchus Marsh back in to try for an outright victory. Bacchus Marsh was 6-131 at stumps. McLean taking another three wickets. Ashfield came within 20 runs of pulling off an upset win against St Anthonys. Needing 303 for victory, Ashfield was 6-268 and looked in control of the game with skipper and opening batsman Jason King still at the crease. But then Ashfield lost the last four wickets for 15 to be all out for 283. King top-scored with 149. In the other matches, Wallan easily defeated East Sunbury and Macedon got its first win of the season by beating Lancefield.

Sunbury Lions focused on recruitment Having added numbers to their senior men’s football side, the Sunbury Lions want to boost player levels in some of their other football and netball groups. The club is hoping to attract more under-18.5 footballers, under-19 netballers and women and youth female footballers to the club for next season. The Lions are also looking for gameday trainers. Lions junior liaison officer Mark Ash says they currently have 13 confirmed under-18.5 players for next season. “We already have a quality base of players including a number who are in the Calder Cannons squad who will know their fate in Feburary 2016, ”Ash said. “There seems to be some hesitation by some capable players of making the step up into senior football. The program that’s run by senior coach Rick Horwood is second to none. “We require a dedicated group of young men to fill the rest of the squad. All players are guaranteed to play regular football due to the club’s rotation policy.” As well as players, the Lions under-18.5 side is in need of a coach with Jamie Bramble having stood down to support his son who is in the Cannons’ program. The club is looking for someone with experience. “Rick will take training until Christmas and will work with the under-18.5 coach,” Ash said. “The role could be a good stepping stone for someone who has a big focus on junior development.” On the women’s side, the club is looking for players for all four football squads. With changes to the EDFL’s youth girls competition, the club wants to field under-12, under-15 and under-18 teams as well as a women’s side. This year, it fielded only an under-18 team. Girls coach Ron Sikora said there were players interested in all three age groups but not enough to field teams. “We’re looking at about 16 to 17 girls split between the under-15 and under-18 teams,” Sikora said. “There needs to be a bare minimum of 12 girls per team.” The premiership-winning women’s side is also looking for players. The women’s team will be promoted next season because of its domination this year in the west division despite struggling to field a full team in most games. Odgers claims third state title
Woodend recorded its first win of the Central Highlands Bowls division 1 season on Saturday. Playing the higher-ranked Kyneton at Woodend, the two teams split the four rinks at two apiece. Chloe Stewart, coming off a quarter-final appearance at the Victorian Open during the week, played with Mark Smoljo to win their rinks for Kyneton, while Troy Williams and Colin Scott did likewise for Woodend. It was the massive 37-20 rink win by Scott that proved to be the winning difference for Woodend, which won the encounter, 102 (14)- 89 (4) to go to a 1-1-3 record to start the season. Woodend remains in seventh spot on the ladder, three points behind Romsey. Gisborne kept its winning start to the season by smashing Romsey. Gisborne took all points on offer, winning 141 (18) - 69 (0), and is on top of the ladder, 15 points clear of Lancefield. Gisborne skips Darren Fletcher, Sam Boslem and John Bell sit in the top three positions on the skip ladder, with Fletcher and Boslem remaining undefeated after five rounds. Despite winning only one rink, Kyneton Golf Gold defeated Bacchus Marsh 100 (14) – 90 (4). The two sides split two rinks, with Anthony Mathison’s rink win of 38-19 propelling his side to the triumph. Lancefield had an easy win over Kyneton Golf Blue, 113 (17) – 77 (1), with Jeff Holmes’ rink win of 34-12 the biggest of division 1. Diggers Rest, Kyneton, Macedon and Bacchus Marsh were the winners in division 2.
Sunbury’s Carla Odgers has won a second straight women’s bowls Victorian Open. The Australian representative was a shot away from a win against Lisa Phillips, before Phillips responded and hit the lead, 20-19. Odgers then delivered two outstanding bowls to claim her third Victorian title with a 21-20 win. She adds it to her 2012 and 2014 titles. Odgers made the final after a 21-17 semi-final win over Sunbury teammate Elise Cowan. Odgers and Cowan continued their good form on Saturday as Sunbury beat West Coburg 86 (15) – 59 (3) in Bowls Victoria’s division 2, section 2 pennant. Sunbury’s Dave Glennon said it was the two rinks led by Odgers and Cowan that proved the difference. “They travelled home on Friday night to play on Saturday. Carla’s rink won 28-6, and it was good to see her carry on her form,” Cowan said. “Elise’s rink won 21-14.” Mark Cowan’s rink lost 19-17, while Deeon Dean’s rink drew 20-all. The win puts Sunbury back on top of the ladder despite having lost one more match than the second-placed Craigieburn. “The 16-2 and 18-0 wins have come in handy so far, and we need to keep having convincing wins,” Cowan added. Sunbury plays Yarraville-Footscray this week. Tara Murray

MOTOR Turbo hatches offer triple treat David Bonnici compares three similarly performing four-cylinder turbo-powered hatches priced about $30,000
Kia Cerato Koup Turbo
Holden Astra GTC Sport
Hyundai Veloster SR Turbo II
Kia’s first ever turbo coupe is a pretty car that appears to be more Posh than Sporty Spice. The interior is well presented and roomy, including comfortable leather sports seats, faux-carbon fibre trim and chrome highlights that mask a lot of the plastic. It’s a long hatch so has plenty of room in the back thanks to the handy cargo space and when the back seats are folded down. Being a Kia, it comes with heaps of standard features including multi-function trip computer, rear-view camera, LED running lights and 18-inch alloy wheels (including spare) just to name a few. On top of all that, it’s a nice car to drive. It’s rather unassuming under normal driving conditions, though you want to keep an eye on the speedo if you want to avoid speed camera fines in 60km/h zones. It’s nice around town, but when you ask it to dance on the open road it happily obliges with minimum fuss, All in all this is a great sporty, and dare I say, practical car.
If you think you’ve seen the slinky, head-turning lines of the Holden Astra before, it’s because it was already here with an Opel badge during that company’s short lived direct foray into the Australian market. The roomy leather interior is as striking as the car’s shell, with comfortable sports seats and cool ambient lighting along the dash and door trims. It has pretty good vision for a coupe but I’m surprised the 7-inch MyLink touch screen doesn’t feature a rear vision camera, though the car does have satellite navigation. The buttons around the entertainment system look complicated and kind of are. This has a smaller engine than the Kia but similar performance. It takes off like a rocket in second gear and moves up the six gears well. Ride on the 19-inch wheels was good but not as smooth as the Holden’s Australian-built Cruze Z.
If the Kia Cerato is pretty and unassuming and the Astra a bit of a poser, the Hyundai Veloster SR Turbo is the punk who crashed the beauty pageant and yelled: “Look at me”. It’s not pretty, though it certainly ain’t ugly. The test car I drove had a magnificent low-sheen gun-metal paint job. The Veloster is features-packed and looks like a fun car to drive, a perception that becomes reality after pressing the start button, though it’s not as refined as the other two. The striking looks continue inside in the form of great-looking leather-appointed sports seats and angled lines that lead to the 7-inch touch screen in the middle of the dash. It’s roomy enough inside with a handy, almost hidden, third door on the passenger side making entry easier. The Veloster makes no bones about being a sports car so the ride is a bit stiffer and it’s geared for better high-end performance. But it’s not the hot hatch it pretends to be – not that this bothers its many devotees.
