Fire anger simmers By Matt Crossman Authorities have vowed to start immediately working to rebuild trust with communities affected by October’s devastating LancefieldCobaw bushfire – but the initial reaction from residents is that it’s going to take time. Some people rolled their eyes and others mouthed ‘‘blah-blah-blah’’ as findings of the independent investigation into the escaped planned burn were released to the public during a lengthy meeting on Thursday morning. About 200 people packed Lancefield’s Mechanics Institute, and while there was little of the anger that characterised previous gatherings, there was a definite sense of scepticism. The state government has promised to implement all 22 of the inquiry’s recommendations, including improving previously ‘‘passive’’ communication processes in the lead-up to all planned burns. Many residents were pleased when Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning secretary Adam Fennessy apologised for the handling of the 266-hectare Cobaw Ranges planned burn ignited on September 30. The burn broke containment lines on October 3 and again on October 6. Close to 3000 hectares was eventually burnt. Four houses, 25 sheds and thousands of kilometres of fencing was destroyed. ‘‘I’m here today to say sorry to you and your community,’’ Mr Fennessy said. ‘‘I am deeply sorry for the distress I have caused you and the enormous impact it has had on your lives. ‘‘My job is to minimise the threat of bushfire to your community. The Lancefield-Cobaw burn was meant to do that, but what it did was put you, your properties, at risk.’’ The investigation, led by Western Australian fire and land management expert Murray Carter and involving community representatives, found the planned burn had been “inadequately resourced” from the start, and risk assessment was poor. But the report said staffing had not been affected by the AFL grand final or the public holiday that accompanied it this year. Environment Minister Lisa Neville confirmed that the approvals process that led to ignition on September 30 “basically” involved one person. “We should not have a system that allows for that in the first place,” she said. Residents welcomed the government’s acceptance of the inquiry’s recommendations.

But they continued to apportion some of the blame to Macedon Ranges council, saying that bans on roadside wood collection made the severity of the blaze much worse. Frosts Road resident Jason Schmidt fears a fire that destroyed his house on November 13 may have been a result of embers left by the blaze. ‘‘The bylaws are killing us,’’ he said. “Until that changes, until they are properly responsible

with the management of roads, it won’t change. If people were allowed to go get wood like they used to be, half of the fuel for this fire would have been gone already. It would cost the council nothing.’’ Jimmy Dargan, who lost a cottage and sheds on Burke and Wills Track, agreed. ‘‘Talk is fine, but we want action,’’ Mr Dargan said. ‘‘The roadsides are ridiculous.’’ East ward councillor Henry McLaughlin said

the council was doing everything it could to improve how roadsides were managed. “Managing roadsides is a complex issue and, as it currently stands, council must follow processes dictated by the government,” he said. “We support the government’s commitment to working with VicRoads and local governments to improve how roadside vegetation is managed.’’

Call to extend Sunbury bike path By Matt Crossman A long-time Sunbury cyclist says lives could be saved by the simple extension of a path beside Vineyard Road. The shared pathway currently ends at Moore Road, about 200 metres short of the Calder Freeway overpass, forcing cyclists and pedestrians heading for Diggers Rest to cross onto the road. With vehicles trying to enter the freeway

or continue to the overpass, Sunbury Bicycle Users Group member Hector Bugeja said it was a nasty mix. ‘‘You’ve got traffic going onto the freeway, you’ve got traffic behind you, you’ve got others trying to get in the right lane to go over the bridge,’’ he said. ‘‘There is a path on one side, but there’s nothing connecting it. It’s such a dangerous situation.’’ Mr Bugeja said there had been many nearmisses involving cars, pedestrians or cyclists

at the busy site. A cyclist was killed in a crash further along the stretch of road in midOctober. ‘‘It just needs to be looked at,’’ Mr Bugeja said.

‘‘It can easily be fixed by them connecting that bit of path.’’ Mr Bugeja has written to Roads Minister Luke Donnellan and Sunbury MP Josh Bull calling for urgent action. A spokesman for Mr Bull said the local parliamentarian had inspected the site and shared Mr Bugeja’s concerns. He said Mr Bull had spoken with Mr Donnellan and was waiting on a formal response.

A group of students from Candlebark School near Romsey were in an area of Paris that was bombed about an hour before the November 13 terror attacks. The nine year 10s, who were wrapping up a six-week trip to France, returned home safely early last week, having flown out of Paris in the hours after the attacks that killed more than 130 people. Candlebark principal John Marsden said that, while a little shaken, the teenagers were no worse for wear. ‘‘They’d been in one of the areas that was bombed about an hour before the bomb went off,’’ he said. ‘‘Fortunately, they’d returned to their accommodation before it all happened.’’ Mr Marsden said it had been a disturbing way to end the tour. ‘‘There were sirens going all night and, when they went to the airport the next morning, they said it felt like a city that had been completely traumatised,’’ he said. Heightened security and detours made the trip to the airport a little harder, but Mr Marsden said the thoughts of the students were with the people they had spent so long interacting with and learning about. ‘‘They were obviously concerned for the people they’d met over there. “And, of course, they really identify with the French way of life and that society.’’ Mr Marsden said the alternative education school sent at least one group a year off on an overseas trip, with students having previously travelled to China. ‘‘Getting to know other cultures is so important,’’ he said. ‘‘It makes it less and less likely that we’ll have to have global wars while people are communicating with each other face to face.’’

Home violence ‘too high’ By Matt Crossman Sunbury and Macedon Ranges residents are being urged to keep working with police and community services in changing attitudes about domestic violence. Speaking ahead of White Ribbon Day (November 25), Hume crime prevention officer Jacqui Newman said the number of people subjected to violence in their own homes remained too high. Latest data from the Crime Statistics Agency shows Hume recorded a 3.7 per cent increase in family incidents in the year to July 30, from 2906 to 3014. Macedon Ranges recorded a 6.9 per cent reduction in offences, continuing a recent trend. ‘‘We are certainly working very hard with organisations like Sunbury Community Health and there is a great support system in place,’’ Senior Constable Newman said. ‘‘The way we deal with it, for both the victim and alleged perpetrator, has certainly changed for the better in the past four or five years.’’ Cobaw Community Health staff will hit the streets of the Macedon Ranges on Wednesday, distributing posters and urging business owners and shoppers to take an oath to ‘‘stand up, speak out and act’’ to prevent violence against women. People can also decorate a canvas in front of Macedon Ranges Health Centre in Neal Street, Gisborne. The artwork will signify people putting their hands together to say no to family violence. Tables and individual seats for a White Ribbon charity fundraiser are still available. The event, including a two-course meal and performance by comedian Jean Kittson, will be held at Sunbury Bowling Club from 6.30pm on Friday. Tickets: $55. Details: 0419 101 906

Protest singers call for change A rousing anthem from Les Miserables will serve as the rallying cry for a people’s climate-change march through the streets of Kyneton this Sunday. A ‘climate choir’ has been rehearsing songs, including Do You Hear The People Sing?, as the Macedon Ranges Green Sing? Energy Coalition continues its call on the council to commit to becoming carbonneutral by 2020. The coalition is also pushing for solar panels to go on all council buildings at an estimated cost of $1 million, and it wants a stand-alone climate change policy for the municipality. More than 700 people took part in a similar rally last year. Co-ordinator Rob Bakes is expecting another large crowd for this year’s rally, which will begin with a picnic at Quarry Reserve at noon before the march at 2pm. ‘‘Our happy throng of climate warriors will then make their way up the Piper Street footpath to the Mechanics Reserve, where the main event will be held,’’ Mr Bakes said. Speakers at the rally will include Environment Victoria’s Jane Stabb, Mary Crooks from the Victorian Women’s Trust, and Victorian Local Government Association president Sebastian Klein. Hundreds of people will be invited to join in the singing. ‘‘[The songs] have been rewritten with words that highlight the plight of our planet,’’ Mr Bakes says. More details: goo.gl/9pDGjD

New body upholds ‘god’s own’ By Matt Crossman Community groups have welcomed the state government’s decision to appoint an independent committee to advise on planning protections for the Macedon Ranges. The expert panel, announced by Planning Minister Richard Wynne at Gisborne on Wednesday, will give residents, businesses, councils and landholders the chance to have input to proposed changes, and raise concerns. Mr Wynne’s announcement, which fulfils an election promise, was greeted by loud applause. It came after he referred to the Macedon

Ranges as ‘‘god’s own country’’ and said it was worthy of protection as the state’s population continues to grow. Mr Wynne said there had to be a balance between the growth of towns and the need to protect the area’s environmental attributes and existing character. ‘‘We need to make sure planning controls stay up to date with how Victoria is changing,’’ he said. ‘‘We also need planning controls to reflect each region’s individual needs.’’ Both the Macedon Ranges Residents Association and Hanging Rock Action Group

welcomed news that the committee will be operating by the end of this year. Consultation hearings are likely to be held around the end of January, with Mr Wynne saying it was not a matter of whether the government protects the Macedon Ranges but how that protection is shaped. Action group spokesman Luke Spielvogel said the challenge was to honour the legacy of Statement of Planning Policy 8, a state government planning statement formulated specifically for the Ranges, which defined the town and country principles that have shaped the area’s character since the 1970s.

“Those principles are being challenged now by council’s rural living strategy, which looks to degrade the last 40 years of planning protection,” Mr Spielvogel said. “There has been much talk of the growth challenges we face on the fringes of Melbourne, but it [growth] also presents great opportunities for business, agriculture and employment.’’ Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the committee would help ensure the area was protected from growth and change. ‘‘I want to reassure our community we will work with them to protect what we love about the region while supporting growth and jobs,’’ she said.

An appetite for tourism Central Victoria’s reputation as a premier food, wine and tourism destination has been boosted, with Sunbury and Macedon Ranges operators picking up a swag of trophies at last week’s RACV Victorian Tourism Awards. Gisborne Peak Winery’s eco-cottages secured the silver award for ‘unique accommodation’; Isabella at Kyneton took out silver for ‘self-contained accommodation’; and Piper Street Food Company won the silver prize for ‘new tourism business’. Sunbury Visitor Information Centre (silver for ‘visitor information services’) and Melbourne Airport (gold for ‘outstanding contribution by volunteers’) were also recognised. Piper Street Food Co’s Damian Sandercock said the Kyneton business, which late last year opened a cooking school, cafe and bakery as part of a major expansion, is just a part of

the story that central Victoria has to tell. ‘‘The judges were really impressed with our cooking school and the way we’re able to talk about the region,’’ Mr Sandercock said. ‘‘We operate regular classes that give people genuine knowledge and skills, but we also teach them about local and seasonal produce.’’ Mr Sandercock said Daylesford and Macedon Ranges Tourism’s ongoing support was crucial to the business’s success. ‘‘Tourism is not just about having a big waterslide; it’s about being able to tell stories about the area. ‘‘What’s important to us is that the whole region benefits. If it’s just us, we won’t survive.’’ Matt Crossman Piper Street Food Co’s Damian Sandercock. (Shawn Smits)

Mayoral choice surprises pundits By Matt Crossman A shock result in the Macedon Ranges mayoral election has put councillor Graham Hackett in the top role. Councillors spurned last-term candidate John Letchford, electing Cr Hackett by a vote of 5-4 last Wednesday night. Cr John Connor, who was later elected deputy, nominated Cr Hackett for the mayoralty, and was supported by Cr Russell

Mowatt, outgoing mayor Cr Jennifer Anderson and Cr Sally Piper. Cr Letchford, who was expected to be the only candidate for the role, was backed by councillors Roger Jukes, Henry McLaughlin and Ian Ellis. The selection of Cr Hackett, who was elected in east ward in 2012, means that every mayor during the current council has been a first-term councillor. “I’m looking forward to working closely with

the community and councillors and will take pride in helping council to achieve its vision of a region that has a strong sense of place and community,’’ Cr Hackett said. “I’m passionate about achieving great things for the Macedon Ranges; it’s where I live and work, and I want to enrich and protect that for future generations.’’ Cr Hackett was deputy mayor in 2013-14. He will be supported by two-time mayor John Connor, who is entering his final year as

a councillor. Cr Connor said he was excited about the year ahead. “I’m looking forward to working with the mayor and my colleagues to achieve a number of important projects and plans during the final year of our four-year term,” he said. Cr Hackett said Cr Connor had been a ‘‘monument’’ for him as he learnt the ropes on council. Cr Piper was among those who praised outgoing mayor Cr Anderson for her work during a ‘‘tough year’’.

Past and present parishioners are being invited to celebrate the 150th anniversary of a Trentham church that is a focal point of the small community. Uniting Church moderator Dan Wootton will attend a service at St Andrews from 2pm this Sunday. Highlands cluster Reverend Jenny Hayes (pictured) says the congregation, started by Presbyterians in 1865, still meets on the second and fourth Sunday of every month. ‘‘The church remains an important asset for a town like Trentham,’’ she says. ‘‘The hall is used, not just by the church, but by many other community groups as there’s not a lot of public spaces.’’ Afternoon tea will be served after Sunday’s celebratory service. Wind farms back on track By Matt Crossman An ambitious state renewable energy target of 30 per cent by 2020 will help tackle climate change, unleash investment and create jobs in areas like the Macedon Ranges, environment group Friends of the Earth (FoE) has said. Speaking after meeting Macedon Labor MP Mary-Anne Thomas and Gisborne-based energy company WestWind last week, FoE spokesman Leigh Ewbank said the Labor government had shown leadership by repealing the worst parts of the former Liberal government’s wind farm bans. ‘‘The government can build on the positive first step by setting ambitious targets for 2020 and 2025,’’ he said. WestWind managing director Tobi Geiger said the company, which came to Gisborne in 2008, employs five staff, but wants to expand. ‘‘It was the original Victorian renewable energy target established by the Bracks’ government that drew us to Victoria, and we enjoy working in a regional area like the Macedon Ranges,’’ he said. ‘‘A robust plan to grow Victoria’s renewable energy sector … is something all parties can support.’’ Ms Thomas said the government, which has released an energy ‘‘roadmap’’ ahead of a broader renewables plan expected early next year, wanted to help companies like WestWind get more projects under way. ‘‘Renewable energy means jobs,’’ she said. The roadmap includes four priority areas: establishing renewable energy targets for 2020 and 2025, using the government’s electricity purchasing power to help create hundreds of renewable energy jobs, ending discrimination and improving access to the grid for solar customers, and supporting clean energy jobs through a $20 million new energy jobs fund.

Longer jail term for wife’s assault A man found guilty of an aggravated burglary in Sunbury involving his estranged wife has had his sentence extended in the Supreme Court of Appeal. The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) appealed the six-year sentence handed down to Trevor Barnes, 39, in the County Court, describing it as ‘‘manifestly inadequate’’. The appeal came after Barnes pleaded guilty to charges including aggravated burglary, intentionally causing serious injury and recklessly causing serious injury. Barnes was charged after entering the unlocked door of a farmhouse at 5am on May 25, 2013 and hitting a man, who he found in the shower with his wife, several times to the head with a jemmy bar. Barnes also struck his wife on the back, head and legs and kicked her in the face and the chest. Barnes’ younger brother Glenn, who was present during the offending, was sentenced to three and a half years after being found guilty despite not participating in the assaults. A DPP appeal against the sentence given to Glenn Barnes was dismissed. Justice Michael Croucher found that the injuries caused to Trevor Barnes’ estranged wife and her partner were severe. Barnes was resentenced to eight years with a non-parole period of five years. Matt Crossman

Survey about council

Hume residents are urged to take part in a survey about the projects and services most important to them. Mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou said feedback from the council’s annual community survey helped it plan for the future. Participants can leave comments online until November 27. Details: www.hume. vic.gov.au Residents of Macedon Ranges Health’s Gisborne Oaks aged care centre will benefit from a new mini bus handed over by a community bank. The donation was one of many made during the Gisborne and District Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank’s spring investment evening last week.

A group of volunteers from Sunbury churches are working together to give anyone who’s lonely a little bit of heaven on earth this Christmas. Christmas Day lunch at Sunbury Baptist Church is prepping up to feed 120 people this year. Spokesman Pete Dove says the event, now in its sixth year, attracts a range of people. ‘‘We have a complete mix … we have some families, we have people who have recently lost someone,’’ he says. ‘‘We also get people from different socioeconomic backgrounds. It’s not just for people who can’t afford Christmas dinner.’’ Mr Dove says the festive season can be one of the hardest times for people who’ve experienced job or relationship problems, or the death of a loved one. ‘‘Basically you shouldn’t be lonely on Christmas Day,’’ he says. Traditional meals are served from 11.30am-2pm. Bookings and details: 9740 7683. Matt Crossman

What are some of the school’s strengths? Its people. Students often answer the teachers when asked this question. Our major strength is knowing our students, their strengths and areas for improvement, working to provide them with the skills to enter the workforce or further education. We have a culture of high expectations and continual improvement, along with building resilience when things don’t go the way you want. What are some of the challenges? What were your thoughts about Sunbury College when you arrived in 2010? Growing up in Carisbrook, outside of Maryborough, I wanted to be a principal of a school that, while not small, epitomised the things that were good about growing up in a country environment. A beautiful Edwardian built c1908, Rosemont (on about 2469 square metres) has been impeccably made over, retaining leadlight and stained glass windows and doors, ornate fireplaces, timber fretwork and glorious arches, along with dark timber and parquetry floorboards. The three bedrooms, each with fireplace, include the main with an exquisite en suite with freestanding copper tub, a feature also in the gorgeous main bathroom. The kitchen has custom-built dark timber cabinetry, edged quartz benchtops, marble subway tiles, a Belling electric/gas cooker and a Surefire wood heater. The lounge-dining room, with parquetry floors and a stunning fretwork entrance, opens via french doors to a deck and paved alfresco area. An informal sitting room has a fireplace. Gas central heating, 31,700-litre water tank reticulated to garden and orchard, a double carport (remote-control), a 6 x 18-metre shed and picturesque gardens complete the picture.

Offering a rural lifestyle within town boundaries, this well-built, fully renovated house has space and lifestyle elements in abundance. The mix of slate floor tiles and exposed brick walls is brightened with crisp white wall paint and accents; rooms are large, and surrounding gardens on the block of about 3433 square metres are well landscaped. Of the five bedrooms (and a skylit study), the main has a fitted walk-in wardrobe and a full en suite, and the main bathroom has a spa under a leadlight window. The new kitchen has a bamboo-topped island bench, a stack of white cupboards and new appliances. Living areas are a large family-meals area with wood heater, and an entertainment room (fits a billiard table easily) with a timber bar, leading to the undercover inground pool and spa. Other features are a fireplace, electric wall heaters in all bedrooms, a gym room, garden shed, all town services, dual road frontages and integrated double garage.

On about 0.63 hectares of natural bushland, with gardens and lawn areas around, this double-storey timber cottage makes an earthy bush retreat, with interior walls and ceilings (some pitched) decked out in knotty cedar. Exposed ceiling beams, dormer windows and a mezzanine level add further character. Three spacious downstairs bedrooms include one with a walk-in wardrobe and the main with walk-in wardrobe and en suite. Another dormer bedroom sits next to a study upstairs. The all-timber kitchen has a dishwasher and electric upright cooker and is incorporated in the large living area, which has a wood heater. The main bathroom is downstairs next to a laundry. Verandahs provide a cool spot to soak up the peaceful surrounds, and there are sheds and a cubbyhouse. The property is within minutes of Mount Macedon Primary School, the village and train station.

Within minutes of Gisborne and with a bus service to several schools, this residence (of about 46 squares), on about 1.9 hectares, is perfectly positioned to capture lovely rural scenery, yet offers an easy commute to Melbourne airport and CBD. Four large bedrooms (and there’s a study off the entry hall) at the eastern end include the elegant main with bay window, walk-in wardrobe and en suite with dual vanity basins. The main bathroom is in classic black and white and the toilet is separate. The carpeted lounge room has a stack of windows, while the tiled meals area flows into the family room, which has glossy Sydney bluegum floorboards and a wood heater. The kitchen has loads of white cupboards topped with granite, an island bench, dishwasher and stainless-steel cooking appliances. Gas ducted heating, split-system, double-glazing, 12 solar panels, two water tanks, a dam, large shed, double carport, integrated double garage and fruit trees are other highlights.

This dove grey-painted weatherboard with a cheery yellow, pivot-hinged door is the embodiment of city chic with a high degree of design flair and luxe liveability. Large, light-filled rooms have a fantastic flow. Dark floorboards against stylish wall paint colours, big windows beautifully dressed and top-notch appointments deliver a praiseworthy level of sophistication. The front garden, the property’s introduction, isn’t shabby either. Immaculately trimmed hedges, oaks, liquidambars, silver birches, rhodies and camellias are artistically arranged around a velvet lawn and pebbled circular driveway,

Auction: December 5 at noon while a cottage garden with roses, catmint and irises is a clever foil for the park-like formality. Entry is into a skylit foyer where bookshelves lining three walls offer a homey welcome before a tri-zone living hub. The kitchen, flanked by sitting and meals areas, is unbeatably slick, with two island benches (one stainless-steel topped and sitting under a designer light fitting), a big walk-in pantry, most storage in soft-closing drawer form, a Miele dishwasher, 900-millimetre gas cooktop and two under-bench ovens. The meals zone has French doors on both sides, one to the

cottage garden contemplation spot and the other to the perfectly formed outdoor rear entertainment area. Lovely bedrooms – two down, two up – each have their own colour palettes of soft aqua, apple green or soft grey. The main, off the entry foyer, has a glazed door to a two-way en suite which has a stone-topped vanity unit. The second downstairs bedroom has pool views and a powder room next door. A fabulous laundry with drying room is also near here. Both upstairs bedrooms (off a carpeted landing with laundry chute) have swish en suites, one with a tub. The possible second

main bedroom has an island wall concealing a dressing room fitted with a lowboy. A huge, silvered-timber deck, one section with a retractable awning, surrounds a solar-heated pool with a high, trimmed hedge affording shelter and privacy. A wisteria-clad pergola in the adjoining garden is another spot to sit. Hydronic heating, a split-system, ceiling fans, a remote-controlled four-car garage with side roller door to the backyard and a block of about 2023 square metres are other keynotes. Carole Levy

A little TLC and the pretty Western Red Cedar home will win hearts.

be delighted. Added features to enhance the property include a circular driveway, extra wide side access and a 30x20m approx. colourbond shed with concrete flooring. Why wait, here is a most affor af dable property in an excellent location. Contact us today and make it your own!

“WHEN WE WERE YOUNG” When we were young Superannuation seemed such a good idea – employers would contribute and we could salary sacrifice – how wonderful, we would be comfortable until the end of our days. Things have certainly changed; with the stock market in free-fall and Superannuation Funds diminishing many will face a very precarious future indeed and it seems that no-one is accountable! Apparently Superannuation is a calculated risk and risk is fine when young – not so fine as we grow older. older I watched with great interest Greek and Italian families in the early 70’s who brought houses, one for the whole family to start with, then another for Grandma and Grandpa, one for Uncle and Aunty and so it continued. My teaching career started in Moonee Ponds in the very early 70’s and Moonee Ponds was predominately Italian. Bricks and Mortar was the dream and hard work not an issue, they did not depend entirely on Superannuation but made their own futures. From Moonee Ponds I moved to Box Hill School and then to Burnley – 86% Greek and once again I witnessed hard work and the acquiring of property. Richmond and Burnley were innerinner suburban, working class areas and were affor af dable – don’t we wish we had invested in Richmond, Burnley or Moonee Ponds instead of salary sacrificing to boost our Superannuation.

Accommodation Comprises: • Three bedrooms • Comfortable lounge room • Kitchen/Meals • Family bathroom • Laundry • Double carport provides excellent and convenient shelter • Under-cover rear entertainment area is perfect for BBQs or to watch the children play in the enclosed play area. Surrounded by very attractive gardens including an orchard those with a “green thumb” will

I am not a financial advisor or an economist and I am certainly no expert on financial matters but it seems to me that bricks and mortar are a pretty safe option. It is no longer a “property boom” but in spite of this bricks and mortar are still an excellent long term investment – an investment over which we have some control.

37 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 24, 2015

FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds a Sri Lankan makeover of a fast food joint Sri Lankan tiramisu? What might that look and taste like? Basically, it’s a regular tiramisu configuration, just made with sweet Sri Lankan coffee, spiced with cumin and cardamom, the usual sponge fingers joined by gingernut biscuits, then topped with cashews and chewy praline. The textures are pretty much pure tiramisu, but the flavours are musty, mysterious and magical – not overly sweet and actually nicely on the bitter side. It’s the creation of co-proprietors and co-cooks Isuru Madusanka and Chiran Hemadas at their new baby, Fusion Ceylon. CTS has been to 27 Watton Street before, when it combined SL food with burgers, fish ‘n’ chips and the like. After that, before Isuru and Chiran arrived, it reverted to strictly fast-food under different management. The place still bears hallmarks of its fast-food heritage, but now there’s some nice wooden furniture that gives the place a sweet cafe vibe. These two blokes have background – many years between them working in top-shelf hotels – and they cleverly match the cooking of their SL culture with approaches a little more edgy. Their menu is short, but full of intrigue and of low prices. We choose some humble dishes for our first visit, and are very satisfied. Nasi goreng a la Ceylon ($13) seems not much different from regular versions, though Chiran tells me the spicing is not the same, and they use basmati rice instead of jasmine.

FUSION CEYLON Address: 27 Watton Street, Werribee. Phone: 9741 9656 It’s all good – the rice is packed with finely diced vegetables and chicken chunks, and the gooey fried egg sitting atop is just right, as is the nicely-charred chicken drumstick. Prawn crackers are, as always, unnecessary. The same vegie mix is found on the noodles kothu ($10), which is on the specials list. As with the more traditional roti kothu, in which roti is finely chopped with the other ingredients, here the noodles get the chop treatment. And, instead of chicken or pork, mine is served with lingu – house-made SL sausages that draw on a Dutch heritage. Chiran and Isuru make them with chicken or pork, vinegar, cumin, cardamom, nutmeg, pandan leaf and curry leaf. There’s one snag on top of my kothu and pieces mingled in, a distinctive and quite tangy sausage, not in the least confronting. The kothu noodles are served with what I’m told is a “mixed meat gravy”, for adding as I eat. It’s very nice and tasty.

SPORT Old hand returns to pick up the mantle at Rupo After a couple of years away from football, Kevin Fitzgerald was starting to get itchy feet … he wanted to return to coaching. So the former Gisborne coach and Riddell District Football League premiership coach decided the top job at Rupertswood would suit him perfectly, and he will take it on in 2016. “My boys [sons] have always played against Rupertswood, and they’ve impressed me with how they ran their junior club and the number of juniors who have come through,” Fitzgerald said last week. “I know one of the Rupertswood coaches, and we were talking. I thought this role would

suit me. I like having young talent available and being able to teach them.” Having taken his first training session last week, Fitzgerald is happy with what he’s seen. He adds that the biggest change in the competition in his time away is its improved standard. Fitzgerald is optimistic about what the Sharks can achieve in the next few years. This year, they finished third on the ladder only to be knocked out in the first week of finals. “If we can keep most of the kids, we can have a really good RDFL side,” the coach said.

“The senior side is a relatively young team, which is even better. Some of the older blokes might think that they are running out of time to win a premiership, but I think we can have success straight away. “They did a lot right under Ben [Jordan], and he did a good job. You can’t write off a team after one bad game [the final].” The Sharks will have two major outs next season, with former captains Leigh Brennan and Mitch Gaunt heading to St Albans in the Western Region Football League. “Leigh’s brother plays at St Albans and so do a few other ex-Rupertswood boys,” Fitzgerald said.

Lady luck stuck in outer By Tara Murray Ashfield could consider itself unlucky in the opening four rounds of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s B-grade competition. It’s without a win in that time but has been in the mix each game, only to fall just short. Captain-coach Jason King says lack of experience has played a part in the side not getting over the line. “We haven’t lost by more than 30 runs,” King said on Sunday. “We’ve been giving a lot of kids a bit of a go with a youth policy these last couple of years. It’s a bit of short-term pain for long-term gain for the club.” King says that, batting-wise, there have been improvements, but the players are letting themselves down in the field. King leads the way with the bat, having posted two 50s and a 100 in four innings. “Generally, it’s been the other way round, with our batting struggling and our bowling and fielding being our strength. “There’s been a lot of focus on the batting in the off season. We’re starting to bat out the overs. It’s good to have the kids stepping up and batting well.” Michael Fox, Corey Woolley and Nathan Anderson are youngsters who, says King, have started to make an impact in the club’s top side. He also praises Matt Bulless, who has been exceptional this season, leading the bowling attack. King is hoping the side’s win against Rupertswood in the T20 competition on Tuesday night will kick-start the season. “We’ve definitely made a note of it,” he said. “The majority of players hadn’t played in a win this season. “Hopefully, the T20s will get us going.” On Saturday, Ashfield continued the good form with the bat, making 9-232 against East Sunbury in the B-grade competition. King top-scored with 51. “We can definitely win the match, if we field and play to our potential,” King said. “If we play the way we did in the last couple of games in the field, we’ll struggle. “We dropped at least 10 catches against St Anthonys.” In other games, Lachlan McLean will be pushing to be promoted in the batting order as he top-scored for Rupertswood for the third time this season. Batting at number nine, McLean scored 37 not out in his side’s 156. Lancefield will resume at 0-5 in reply. St Anthonys set Macedon 262 for a win in their match at Arnolds Creek. Bacchus Marsh made 232 against Wallan in the other fixture. Matt Bulless, batting on Saturday, has been a standout with the ball for Ashfield.

“Both have given a lot to the club, and it’s disappointing that they are leaving.” Fitzgerald said they would most likely look within the club to replace Brennan. Cameron McRorie, who led the Sharks’ goalkicking this season, is now training with VFL side Coburg. “Cam has enough ability to play VFL,” Fitzgerald said. “There will be lots of opportunities for players to play seniors.” The Sharks are looking to add a couple of players this off-season after not recruiting anyone last time around. Blues’ move approved Kilmore will play in the Northern Football League from 2016 after AFL Victoria approved the Blues’ request to leave the Riddell District Football Netball League. The Blues applied in September to leave the RDFNL and join the NFL to ensure the club’s survival. But after the RDFNL rejected the move, it was left to AFL Victoria to make the final decision. Blues president Dave Milne had said previously the club wouldn’t survive if it remained in the RDFNL. “Everyone is rapt,” Milne said last week. “We were hoping the decision would go our way, but you learn not to expect anything. “It was our first training session of the preseason [on the day the move was approved] so it was a jubilant affair.” Milne said the decision meant the club could now start planning for next season. “We only had about 25 people at training as people were waiting for a decision to be made,” he said. “We can now start contracting players. It’ll be a busy few weeks, but I’m looking forward to it.” NFL chief executive Peter McDougall welcomed the addition of Kilmore to the league, whose clubs voted unanimously for the Blues to join the competition. “The club believes the move to the NFL will enhance its long-term viability and I’m certain Kilmore will be a successful and vibrant club in our league,” McDougall said. “The addition of Kilmore assists with growing our senior football competition and will also enable us to increase our number of senior netball teams.” The Blues’ players will be in division 3, while the netballers will play in the Northern Netball League competition on Friday nights. The RDFNL, which recommended its clubs vote against Kilmore’s move to the NFL, said in a statement that it respected the AFL Victoria decision and would not pursue the matter further. “The board and staff of the RDFNL wish Kilmore FNC the very best of luck for their future,” the statement said. “While disappointed to lose a club that has had 66 years of history in the RDFNL, the league hopes this move rejuvenates Kilmore FNC and that the club is successful and prosperous long into the future.” The RDFNL will be a 12-team competition in 2016. Brumbies close the gap By Tara Murray

A convincing win has ensured Sunbury remains on top of the Bowls Victoria division 2, section 2 ladder. Playing Yarraville-Footscray (3) on Saturday, Sunbury won three rinks on the way to an important 84 (16) – 60 (2) away victory. Sunbury’s Dave Glennon said it was the rink led by Brad Jenner that was the stand-out. Jenner was skipper in place of Carla Odgers, who was absent because of Australian squad commitments. “As far as I can tell it was Brad’s first time skippering a rink for the top side,” Glennon said. “The whole rink of Jenner, Marc Bullows, Peter White and Judy Stainton played well, winning their rink 29-11.” “It was good to give someone else a chance to skipper … it gives us someone else to go to if players are away.” Jenner is likely to get a second shot at skipping, with Odgers set to miss again this weekend. Mark Cowan’s rink won 22-13, Elise Cowan’s rink won 20-18 and Deeon Dean’s rink lost 18-13. “To win 16-2 will come in handy towards the pointy end of the season,” Glennon said. Sunbury is three points clear of West Coburg on top of the ladder. Sunbury’s second team defeated Strathmore 98 (16) – 67 (2). Sunbury is seventh in division 3, section 2.

Clarkefield is back on the winners’ list in the North West Metropolitan Cricket Association’s Vic Kyte Shield, thanks to some strong top order batting against Aberfeldie St Johns. Chasing their second win of the season, the Brumbies started the day in the field at Clarkefield Recreation Reserve. The Brumbies got the early wicket of Scott Nicholas, and managed to get frequent wickets throughout the innings. Chasing late runs, St Johns at one stage lost 4-22, slipping to 9-168. They finished their 40 overs at 9-180. David Falzon and Graham Booney took two wickets each for the Brumbies. St Johns’ Daniel Siomos finished 59 not out. The Brumbies innings started the same as St Johns with one of the openers falling for a duck, After Vincent Muscat lost his wicket for just four runs, Thomas Balmer and Tom Brophy set about chasing the target. When Balmer was out for 52, Chris Boyle joined Brophy at the crease, and the pair put on a 98-run partnership to get the Brumbies within sight of victory. Brophy went out for 39, with just three runs for the win. The Brumbies finished their innings at 3-182, with nearly 10 overs in hand. Boyle top-scored with 71 not out. The Brumbies stay in seventh place on the ladder, but they are now only percentage outside the top four. They play Craigieburn at Highgate Reserve this week. Clarkefield’s Thomas Balmer had a busy Saturday, involved in three dismissals on the field and making 52 with the bat. (Damian Visentini)

Woodend finds its feet despite injury setbacks After a slow start to the season, Woodend is starting to find its feet in Gisborne and District Cricket’s McIntyre Cup. In what is expected to be one of the closest competitions in a long time, Woodend has won twice in the first four rounds. Speaking before last weekend’s match against Romsey, Woodend coach Warren Else said the side was starting to improve. “We’ve been a bit scratchy early on,” he said. “Our game against Riddell [the previous week] was our best of the season. It was a well-rounded performance whereas we’d been reliant on individual performances.” Else said not being able to put their best team on the pitch had also been an issue. “We have a core of 14 players, but we haven’t had out best team on the park yet,” he said. “Adam [Johnstone] did his hammy in

the first week, which really hurt us as he’s our best bat, our wicketkeeper and our captain. Missing players makes it hard, but we’re on the right track.” Else said missing players had given others an opportunity. “Tommy Robson has been playing for a while but he’s coming on, making runs and taking wickets,” he said. “My brother Kieran has kept for a couple of games. Tom Boyer has had his first senior game at just 15, having played well in the seconds and juniors.” Johnstone returned to the side on Saturday for day one of the match against Romsey. His presence was vital as he top-scored with 49 in Woodend’s 167, while Else chipped in with 46. James Morley also returned, which limited the impact of missing the Eastleys, Daniel and

Josh, who were at a wedding. Else says wins at this point of the year are already important. “Because the competition is so even you have to take every opportunity. If you can knock off one of the top teams it puts them behind the eight ball.” Else says he’s enjoying his first year back coaching the side. “It’s about helping get the young fellows ready to take over my spot in the next couple of years.” In reply, Romsey was 1-16 at stumps. In other games, Sunbury is 0-22 chasing Diggers Rest’s 173, while Riddell is 0-19 needing 163 for victory against Sunbury United. And Gisborne, needing only 86 to beat Bacchus Marsh, was in strife at 6-49. Tara Murray

Three Riddell District Netball League players will play for the ACU Sovereigns in division 1 of the Victorian Netball League next year. Rupertswood’s Sidonie Moore and Riddell’s Danni Davidson return after playing for the Sovereigns in 2015, while the Sharks’ Tess Abbott joins the side for the first time. The Sharks’ Keara Fitzgerald and Eloise Freeman are part of the Sovereigns’ under-19 team and development squad respectively. Riddell premiership player Mikaela Vaughan headlines RDNL players at the Lightning. Vaughan is part of the championship side, while the Sharks’ Maddison Gay has been named in Lightning’s division 1 team. Sharks teammate Hayley Mathews and Lancefield’s Taylah Watson have been included among the under-19s.

Golf

Anthony Freeman is Romsey Golf Club’s John Laing Shield champion for 2015, overcoming a slow start to beat Les Gaunt in the final on Saturday. Gaunt was three up after eight holes, but Freeman won the next three to square the match. He then won the 14th and 17th to seal a 2 and 1 win.

Nick O’Kearney is back from a break ready for this week’s AFL dream-maker draft. (Shawn Smits)

Cannon shoots for the top By Tara Murray Having dreamt of an AFL career for as long as he can remember, Nick O’Kearney and his family decided to take a few weeks out to relax before this week’s AFL draft day. The Calder Cannons’ midfielder and family planned a holiday to Bali between the end of the footy season and now. Returning to Melbourne last Sunday, O’Kearney was in luck getting back in time for the draft, his flight was the first scheduled after volcanic ash clouds caused hundreds of aeroplanes to be grounded in recent weeks. His parents weren’t so lucky; they found themselves stuck on the Indonesian island for a bit longer. “I’m at home by myself, waiting for mum and dad to get home from Bali,” O’Kearney said last Tuesday. “Here in Melbourne, the draft is at the forefront of my mind.

“You don’t have to think about it while you are over there. I think it has made the process easier getting away from it all.” For the past 12 months, O’Kearney has been waiting for this week’s draft. O’Kearney won the Cannons’ best and fairest award last year as a bottom age player, and watched as several teammates were drafted. Nine Cannons’ players from last year’s list were drafted, including two from O’Kearney’s junior club Keilor. Another two Keilor players who played for Western Jets were also picked. “I suppose it has been a little bit of waiting for it to happen,” O’Kearney said. “We had a lot of boys get drafted and you sort of look up to them. I then saw some of them play AFL. “I still had to play good footy this year. It’s something I’ve been working on for a long time.” Having such a dominant last season, O’Kearney found this year somewhat

challenging, as he juggled TAC Cup and Vic Metro commitments as well as taking part in the AIS scholarship program. “This year was certainly different from last year with the Cannons. “I had three to four commitments this season and had to combine it all. You have to adapt week in and week out. One week, I was with the Cannons, and the next week, I was playing with Vic Metro. “It certainly made me a better footballer.” O’Kearney knows anything can happen at draft time, but has already benefited from the chance to train with two AFL clubs. “I have no idea where things will fall,” he said. “I was lucky enough to train with Richmond in December and with Essendon in January. “It helps fast track you and is a real eye-opener, if you want to follow that career. “It’s an insight into what the players put in. It’s been my dream for as long as I can remember.”

Gisborne continued its winning start to the Central Highlands bowls division season with a hard-fought win over Kyneton. In its closest match so far, Gisborne won 89 (12) - 83 (6). In other results, Lancefield had a massive win over Woodend, 137 (16) - 70 (2), Romsey scraped home against Bacchus Marsh 82 (15) - 81 (3), and Kyneton Golf Gold beat clubmates Kyneton Golf Blue 128 (18) - 65 (0).
