Drug busts on the rise By Matt Crossman Proactive policing is largely responsible for a massive spike in drug busts around Gisborne over the past five years, the area’s top cop believes. A Crime Statistics Agency (CSA) report released last week lists Gisborne as regional Victoria’s top spot for offence rates per 100,000 people – at 1743, they have quadrupled from 425 in 2011. The report also noted that drug-use rates in country areas were no longer different
from those recorded in metropolitan areas. However, Macedon Ranges police inspector Ryan Irwin said extra staff and improved techniques were a factor in the increase from 2011 until this year. ‘‘There’s certainly been an increase, but I wouldn’t think it has been anywhere near that dramatic in terms of the amount of drugs that are out there,’’ Inspector Irwin said. ‘‘It’s the result of a lot of proactive work. Police are out there pulling cars over, checking them and finding this stuff. The other part is that since the emergence of ice in the past couple of

years, there’s been a real focus.’’ Inspector Irwin said night shift crews had been instructed to ‘‘check everything that moves’’ in response to burglaries and thefts on commercial premises. ‘‘Because of that, they’re doing a lot of vehicle intercepts,’’ he said. ‘‘What’s a little more comforting is a lot of
the arrests are people from outside the area.’’ Inspector Irwin said the Macedon Ranges Safety Committee’s efforts to create a regional ice strategy had been delayed slightly due to October’s Lancefield bushfire, but they would be completed next year. ‘‘That will include how we continue to raise awareness,’’ he said. ‘‘You won’t stop the people who get to the point of addiction through enforcement alone. ‘‘But education about the risks and how to get help once you get in that [drug] cycle … that’s the key.’’

Violence survivor dispels myths eliminate inequality between men and women could help solve the problem. “Gender inequality and poor attitudes towards women are one of the key underlying causes of family violence,” Ms Richardson said. Ms Spence said emergency housing needed major investment. ‘‘Every day, the places in Bendigo are full, the places in Melbourne are full,’’ Ms Spence said. ‘‘There’s just nowhere for women escaping family violence to go. What price do we put on a life? That was the question posed by a family violence survivor at a community forum in Kyneton on Friday. Woodend’s Belinda Spence was among more than 50 people who took part in the forum, held as part of the state government’s month-long Victoria Against Violence campaign. Counsellors, teachers, students and MPs, including Family Violence Prevention Minister Fiona Richardson and Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas, were also involved in the event, titled Let’s Talk About Respect. Ms Spence said it was a good chance to
dispel myths about the problem that affected thousands of Victorian women every day. ‘‘It’s not always physical: in my case it was emotional abuse, control and isolation,’’ she said. Ms Spence said that when her former partner, who has since died, couldn’t get to her he stalked her on social media and even killed her daughter’s pets. The forum, which also involved senior police and Centre for Non-Violence chief executive Margaret Augerinos, heard that family violence was a problem affecting people across the community and not restricted to certain neighbourhoods or socio-economic groups. Survivors and experts said continuing to

Burglars look elsewhere Houses in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges are less likely to be burgled than most other places in Victoria. An analysis of crime data released by the RACV last week reveals that one in every 80 houses in Sunbury was hit by thieves in 2014-15, compared to the state average of one in 67. While encouraging, the figure was still down on 2013, when closer to one in every 90 houses was burgled. Results were even better across much of the Macedon Ranges, with one in 107 houses burgled in Gisborne and one in 120 houses at Romsey. Kyneton’s burglary rate was slightly higher at one in 75. The figures are far better than many areas in Melbourne’s west, with one in 19 houses targeted at Williams Landing and one in 24 in Broadmeadows/Dallas. Regional Victoria’s burglary hotspot was Shepparton, where one in 25 houses were burgled in the past financial year. RACV home services general manager Aaron Flavell said people could reduce their chances of being burgled by increasing the risk of crooks being nabbed. ‘‘Thieves look for easy entry into homes so make sure that your doors and windows are well secured with locks made to Australian standards, and that you lock up when you go out, even for short periods,’’ he said. As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, Macedon Ranges police have focused on theft from farm sheds and unattended properties in recent months, following a spike in offences. Matt Crossman

Crusader fights for cancer drug By Matt Crossman A Gisborne woman who has spent 12 years battling mesothelioma is urging the federal government to add a revolutionary, but costly, medication to the pharmaceutical benefits scheme. Despite her ill health, Louise Williams has spent many years fighting on behalf of others diagnosed with lung cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. Mrs Williams said that before starting a new medication, Keytruda, in April this year, she couldn’t get out of bed. ‘‘I was dying,’’ she said. ‘‘I needed oxygen 24/7, I had severe back pain, bone pain, nausea … my body was shutting down.’’ In 1985, her father, who worked in the building industry, was diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma. He died six months later aged 54. In 2003, Mrs Williams, then 47, was diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma. In 2009, it became pleural mesothelioma. She has had large tumours removed, and she underwent many courses of chemotherapy before starting on Keytruda. Mrs Williams said her life had been transformed after 12 doses of the drug, which encourages the body’s immune system to fight tumours. ‘‘It doesn’t kick in immediately, but after the third dose my scan showed significantly reduced tumours and fluid,’’ she said. ‘‘After numbers four and five, I started to ease up the oxygen and was walking better and doing basic household things. ‘‘Between five and six I thought, well, what’s wrong with me? ‘‘My quality of life is back. I’m able to do everything I used to be able to do.’’
But Keytruda, which is listed on the PBS for melanoma but not for asbestos cancers, doesn’t come cheap. Depending on body weight, a single dose can cost between $6000 and $11,000, and it must be administered every three weeks. ‘‘At the moment it’s usually prescribed at the end of life because it’s so expensive,’’ Mrs Williams said. ‘‘I believe once it’s on the PBS, oncologists will be able to try it earlier.’’ Keytruda is getting results with more than 20 different cancer varieties around the world.
‘‘
Everyone should have this option … we will get it - Louise Williams done
’’
‘‘With mesothelioma it’s showing a success rate of 60 to 70 per cent,’’ Mrs Williams said. “Chemotherapy is about 20 per cent. Everyone should have this option.’’ The efforts of Mrs Williams, who has spoken at several international conferences, were recently praised in Federal Parliament by McEwen MP Rob Mitchell. ‘‘I do not think I have met a person with such great inner strength and courage,’’ he said. ‘‘We will keep fighting to help her and hopefully other victims get the support and medication they need to help them lead full lives.’’ Mrs Williams, who hopes to present a 6000-signature petition to Health Minister Sussan Ley soon, said she believed victory was near. ‘‘We will get it done,’’ she said. ‘‘I know we will.’’ A spokesman for Ms Ley did not respond before deadline.

Voices rise over roo-cull plans By Matt Crossman Sunbury and Macedon Ranges wildlife activists have condemned plans to cull kangaroos on Melbourne’s fast-growing urban fringes. They say better planning would be a preferable solution to the problems arising from rapid housing growth to the city’s north and north-west. The number of kangaroos being rescued by groups, such as Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network (MRWN), has soared in recent years, from 594 in 2011 to almost 1300 last year.
Many call-outs relate to roos being hit by cars, with the Melbourne-Lancefield Road among the hotspots, while animals have also become trapped in backyards in areas such as Sunbury’s Jacksons Hill. Wildlife consultant Ian Temby, who last week submitted to the Environment Department a proposal to manage kangaroos in urban areas, said a cull was the most humane solution. ‘‘The alternative is that kangaroos get killed by cars,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s a consequence of development; there are costs.’’
Mr Temby acknowledged that a cull plan would be controversial. ‘‘[But] if they are culled, you are talking about reducing pain and suffering.’’ MRWN spokeswoman Fiona Corke said killing kangaroos to allow more development was hardly a radical solution. ‘‘It’s what they’ve always done, but people expect better now,’’ she said. ‘‘To call for a cull so developers can continue to make money is appalling.’’ Ms Corke said while councils had tried to bring in buffer zones and wildlife corridors
in some areas, the bigger problem was state planning laws. ‘‘The real issue is that developers aren’t forced to make way for wildlife and so it sort of becomes nobody’s problem,’’ she said. Macedon Ranges mayor Graham Hackett said the council, as part of a group of Loddon Campaspe councils, had lobbied for better kangaroo management but did not consider culling to be a viable option. Both Macedon Ranges and Hume councils require management plans limiting effects on native wildlife before developments can go ahead.
The grounds of one of Mount Macedon’s most spectacular gardens will form a beautiful backdrop for a Christmas carol service this Saturday. A Macedon Ranges group is seeking donations of toys as it reaches out to families in need this Christmas. New books, plush toys and smaller items suitable as stocking fillers are also needed for a Christmas toy shop, organised by the Combined Churches of the Macedon Ranges and operating out of Kyneton Baptist Church. The shop, which has been operating for five years, gives families referred by support agencies the chance to select toys for their children. Landfill plans focus on north-west By Alexandra Laskie Landfills in Melbourne’s north-west may have to absorb all the city’s waste within the next 10 years as tips in the south-east begin to close, a new draft waste plan has proposed. The state government’s recently released draft Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Implementation Plan (MWRRG) sets out how Melbourne’s capacity to manage waste will be managed over the next decade. It aims to reduce the city’s reliance on landfills and provide more alternatives, such as
recycling facilities and new kerbside bins that accept garden waste, and fruit and vegetable scraps. The plan says that while the metropolitan region has adequate infrastructure capacity, most potential capacity is in the north-west. It says the Clayton/Dingley cluster of landfills in the south-east will close in the next 18 months to three years, with the three remaining landfills at Hallam, Lyndhurst and Cranbourne continuing for another 10 years. “Beyond 10 years, planning decisions must consider whether it is optimal for all of
Melbourne’s landfilling needs to occur in the north-west,” the report states. “If the north-west catchment managed all metropolitan disposal needs, some landfills would be required to operate at a significantly higher capacity. “How this might affect communities, businesses and the environment will need to be further assessed in considering whether land filling in the north-west may be an optimal long-term solution.” Hume and Whittlesea council staff were briefed on the draft plan last week. Representatives of both councils said that,
Outdoor swimming pools in Lancefield and Woodend have been spruced up for the summer season. New shade structures have been put up in Lancefield, while purification systems have been upgraded at both pools. Macedon Ranges mayor Graham Hackett says water saving initiatives, including the installation of dual-flush toilets, will be carried out in coming months. ‘‘We are lucky to have such great facilities and I encourage people to get outdoors and enjoy them,’’ he says. Opening times for the swimming season, which started on Saturday and finishes on March 14, will vary according to weather forecasts, with extended hours on hot days. Both pools will be open every day that the Melbourne temperature is forecast to hit 24ºC, except Christmas Day. Matt Crossman
(Luke Hemer)
All set for summer
at this point, no details had been shared about which landfills in the north would be expected to expand operations. Western Metropolitan MP Bernie Finn said “locals are furious”. He asked Environment, Climate Change and Water Minister Lisa Neville to reassure his constituents that Melbourne’s north and west would not “be the dumping group for millions of tonnes of stinking waste”. Ms Neville told Star Weekly there would be chances for residents and businesses to have a say before the waste plan is finalised.

Bid to complete the cycle By Matt Crossman A new group formed to help cyclists explore Sunbury’s many bike paths and advocate for life-saving upgrades is encouraging people to join a family ride this Sunday. Members of the Sunbury Bicycle Users Group (BUG) will lead cyclists down paths near Blind Creek, Spavin Drive, Salesian College, Reservoir Road and Emu Bottom homestead, after meeting at Lions Park on Riddell Road at 1pm. Member Hector Bugeja said the
recently-formed group would push for improvements to the local bike network, including links to Goonawarra. ‘‘Sunbury has a good established pathway network which is a very well-kept secret,’’ he said. ‘‘However, there are key gaps, which push riders onto the road.’’ Mr Bugeja said cyclists want a path, which stops at the Spavin Drive lake, extended. The group is also involved in a campaign for a relatively simple upgrade on a dangerous section of Vineyard Road, near the Calder Freeway overpass.
8 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ DECEMBER 8, 2015
As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, the shared pathway currently ends at Moore Road, about 200 metres short of the overpass, forcing cyclists and pedestrians heading for Diggers Rest to cross onto the road. With vehicles trying to enter the freeway or continue to the overpass, Mr Bugeja said it was a nasty mix. He said there had been many near-misses involving cars, pedestrians or cyclists at the busy site. Mr Bugeja and Sunbury BUG convenor Robert Irvine have written to Roads Minister Luke Donnellan and Sunbury MP Josh Bull.
Sunbury could be among the electorates that will decide the next state election, Opposition Leader Matthew Guy believes. Mr Guy visited the town’s train station last week to talk to residents in the wake of the state government’s decision to reverse controversial public transport changes. He said every seat was in play. ‘‘[Sunbury] swung towards the Liberals last time, even though we lost the election,’’ he said. ‘‘It is a bellwether seat, and will continue to be one. “All sides of politics are going to really have to put their best foot forward to get the trust of Sunbury residents.’’ Mr Guy said the community’s co-ordinated efforts to fight train timetable changes had been noticed. ‘‘When communities are organised in that sort of way, it gets results,’’ he said. ‘‘I think Sunbury is now putting itself well and truly on the political radar.’’ Repeating his promise to give Sunbury its own council in the first term of a future Liberal government, Mr Guy said the recent introduction of rate-capping made a split from Hume more straight forward. But Sunbury Labor MP Josh Bull said this year’s transition audit made it clear a standalone council wouldn’t work. “With a 14.5 per cent rate hike and cuts to services, and all on a legally questionable premise, the former Liberal government tried to sell the residents of Sunbury a pup,” Mr Bull said. Web magnifies council scrutiny By Matt Crossman Sunbury and Macedon Ranges residents are more likely to take part in maternal child and health visits than most other Victorians, but they often face lengthy waits for planning applications, a new report card of councils reveals. Created in an effort to help ensure transparent and accountable local government for communities, the state government’s Know Your Council website shows that Macedon Ranges council is generally proactive with animal management, with 62 per cent of lost pets reclaimed compared to the state average of 54 per cent. The cost of the council’s animal management service ($43.33 per registered pet) was lower than the state average. Macedon Ranges council fared well in terms of governance, roads and financial performance. But the time taken to decide planning applications was 91 days, much longer than the state average (65) and the time taken by similar councils (59). Council chief executive Peter Johnston said this showed that working through planning issues in the municipality was a complex task. ‘‘Our planning results are reflective of our deliberate approach to work with applicants and negotiate outcomes during the application process,’’ he said. ‘‘We will continue to work closely with
applicants, but at the same time we will focus on streamlining these application processes to improve the turnaround time.’’ Planning applications in Hume took an average of 97.4 days to be determined, compared with the similar-council average of 82.
‘‘
Our planning results are reflective of our deliberate - Peter Johnston approach
’’
Hume council chief executive Domenic Isola said having survey measures was good ‘‘to a point’’, but results could merely reflect a difference in focus or priorities. He said the needs of what the website termed ‘‘similar’’ councils could also be quite different. But he accepted that planning delays could be reduced. ‘‘Even without knowing exactly how other councils operate, I look at that base number and say we could be doing better,’’ he said. The website showed 11 per cent of Hume residents were considered active library users – lower than the state average of 19 per cent. Hume’s average cost per library visit ($6.87) was also higher, but Mr Isola said this could be attributed to the innovative range of resources offered by the council’s global learning centres and its need to cater for a culturally diverse community.

Roads put rates to work Work has begun on a long list of road, intersection and footpath upgrades in the Macedon Ranges. More than a dozen projects are listed on the council’s summer works schedule, part of its $4.1 million road and footpaths budget for 2015-16. Deputy mayor John Connor and mayor Graham Hackett were at Gisborne South last week to inspect works at the intersection of Couangalt and Benson roads. New street lighting, traffic islands and asphalt are being installed at the notorious blackspot.
Other projects in the Gisborne area include footpath improvements along Scenic Court and road reconstruction on Brady and McGregor roads. New sections of footpath are being built on Wedge Street at Kyneton. Roadworks will also be completed on the Kyneton-Springhill and Redesdale roads. Sandy Creek Road at Riddells Creek will be widened, while road, drainage and footpath upgrades are scheduled for Templeton Street at Woodend. Footpaths will also be built or improved at Lancefield, Romsey, Macedon and New Gisborne.

MY PLACE Former Kyneton Aero Club president Matt Henderson talks about his love of flying – and the Macedon Ranges – with Matt Crossman.
How did you get into flying? My father was in the air force and I was fortunate enough to grow up on a base and spent most of my early years in and around aircraft … I’ve had a passion for aviation ever since. What do you most love about it? The flying aspect is many things – challenging, rewarding, relaxing. It’s the ultimate freedom but also focuses the mind. Given the potential consequences, it requires 100 per cent concentration and commitment. The aircraft themselves have stories to tell. My main interest is in historic and vintage aircraft, particularly ex-military. Do you travel by plane as a passenger very often? How is that experience for you? I travel fairly regularly as an airline passenger … I always get a window seat and spend most of the flight gazing out the window as I do when I’m flying myself. You own some planes yourself … what are their stories? We are fortunate enough to be the current custodians of two historic ex-military aircraft. Our first aircraft, a CT4 Airtrainer, served
with the Royal Australian Air Force between 1975 and 1993. Our second aircraft is a Cessna O-1G Birddog, which was built in 1952 as an L-19 liaison and observation aircraft and served initially with the US Army Air Corps in Vietnam from 1966 to 1971, when it was transferred to the South Vietnamese Army. Following the end of the Vietnam War, it was effectively discarded on the side of an airfield and remained there until 1989 when it was recovered by well-known warbird restorer Col Pay. A friend of ours purchased the aircraft and spent 17 years restoring it. We were fortunate enough to purchase it earlier this year. What’s your day job? I work in the IT industry for a global technology manufacturer in after-sales account management … it’s somewhat removed from aviation but technology is also an area of interest since school days. How does Kyneton airfield compare to others? I’m likely to have a biased view here, but I also spend a lot of time at many other regional airfields around the country. I think the Kyneton airfield is a fantastic asset for both Kyneton and the Macedon Ranges. Having spent a lot of time in the air, what are your favourite parts of the Macedon Ranges? The diversity of scenery in the region is one of the great aspects, from the pasture lands to the north, to the forests, ranges and reservoirs to the south. The most special flight we’ve done recently is the dawn formation flight above Mount Macedon on Anzac Day.
(Paul Rovere)
How did you get involved with the club? I joined the Kyneton Aero Club in 2008 when I first moved into the region and was able to source a hangar at Kyneton airfield. I joined the committee shortly after joining the club and served in various positions from 2008 to 2015, recently standing down as president after four years.

Briefs Forums to tackle climate change
SUNBURY
An initiative to tackle global warming at a local level was announced at a ‘‘people’s climate rally’’ in Kyneton on November 29. Macedon Ranges Green Energy Coalition co-ordinator Rob Bakes said five forums would be held in the municipality next year. The forums, starting in Riddells Creek in March, would promote discussion about ‘‘deliberative democracy’’ to encourage local, state and federal governments to address climate change.

V/Line commuters have welcomed an $18 million project to eliminate mobile ‘black spots’ on country trains. The opposition last week accused the state government of betraying regional areas by pulling plans for the introduction of wi-fi, but Small Business Minister Philip Dalidakis said improving mobile connectivity would increase productivity for regional commuters.

Slip, slop, slap, slide and seek . . . that’s the way to go in the Aussie summer. (iStock)
Wise up and cover up Summer is almost here, and residents across the west are being cautioned to slip, slop, slap, slide and seek as the weather heats up. A new SunSmart campaign is warning that adults are more likely to get sunburned doing day-to-day activities than on a day at the beach. Data from the 2013-14 National Sun Survey shows that 50 per cent of adults were sunburnt during summer weekends from doing activities around the home, including gardening, chores, reading or having a barbecue. Only 29 per cent of adults got sunburnt hanging out at the beach or pool, and 21 per cent got sunburnt playing sport. Figures from the Victorian Cancer Registry reveal 963 people across the western

metropolitan region were diagnosed with melanoma between 2009 and 2013, including 111 in Sunbury, 86 in Melton, 127 in the state electorate of Williamstown, 82 in Altona and 77 in Werribee. From that, 148 people died. Cancer Council Victoria chief executive Todd Harper said the data showed people were getting more sun exposure than first thought. “Incidental UV exposure is catching people out,” Mr Harper said. “It may not occur to people that sun protection is just as important whether you are in the backyard, lying in the park or hanging out at the beach.”

As wine drinkers, we’ve all heard the mantras of serving white wine with white meat and red wine with red, and we chill whites and serve reds at room temperature. But it’s a cruel world, and we’re now being told some reds should be refrigerated, too. It turns out that the temperature at which you drink your wine can impact its overall aroma and taste, and recent studies show we drink our red wines too warm. Barbara Nixon, director at Gisborne Peak Winery, says it’s important to get the temperature just right, so we can really enjoy our red wine. “That red wine should be enjoyed at room temperature is generally a European standard. However, it gets hot in Australia, so my advice is to chill your red wine 30 minutes before drinking it,” Barbara says. “And simply adding some frozen grapes to your wine will prevent you having to put it in the fridge.” Storage is a major factor when it comes to preserving the taste of wines, and Barbara believes this can be a difficult task for many of us. “Not everyone has the perfect wine storage area, so if it’s winter and the wine is in a cool room, you can place it in front of the fireplace or heater to bring the temperature up a few degrees. Alternatively, if it’s too warm, you can place it in a jug of cold water to cool it down.”
1210395-HM50-15 10032518-03
To achieve optimal serving temperature, Gisborne Peak Winery serves its flagship pinot noir between 12 and 14 degrees celsius, and bigger reds, such as its cabernet sauvignon, merlot and shiraz, between 16 and 18 degrees celsius. Wine should be enjoyed and celebrated, so it all comes down to personal taste. But, remember, always drink responsibly. Eleanor Tabone

It’s been featured in Belle magazine, among others, so you know this architect-designed residence comes with cachet and serious design cred. On about 0.81 hectares of the tightly held northern slopes of Mount Macedon, the house sits amid a magnificent old chestnut grove, with beautiful gardens, an orchard, herb and vegie gardens and a chook run. There is an entry foyer, two bedrooms, a bathroom and a living room downstairs, while up top, there are three bedrooms, the main with a walk-in wardrobe and en suite with freestanding tub. Elements such as deep box bay windows, banquette seating, high ceilings (cathedral in upstairs family room), floorboards, customised cabinetry, double glazing, hydronic heating, clever storage and a mud room elevate this to ‘sensational’. The kitchen has Caesarstone benches and the adjoining family room gives access to one of several decks. All within minutes of schools, train station and Braemar College.
Built by Mt Gisborne Homes, this wonderful homestead on about 0.46 hectares is an elegant, light-filled place, bearing period signatures such as rosettes on 2.7-metre ceilings, stepped cornices and skirts, fretwork and a leadlight front door. Polished floorboards delineate the sprawling living zones of family-meals (with gas log fire in period surround) and separate rumpus, while the lounge room is carpeted. The kitchen is big and glam, with black granite benchtops, stacks of storage, corner pantry, wall oven, gas cooktop and dishwasher. Of the four bedrooms (and a study), the main has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite, while the main bathroom has a clawfoot tub. A circular driveway leads to an integrated double garage (internal access), and there’s a huge shed, a back paddock and rail fencing at this fine property close to schools, transport and freeway access.

Among other high-calibre dwellings and perched above town to take in wide vistas, this house on about 3381 square metres presents a contemporary architectural facade matched inside with a cleverly configured floor plan. A large living room with polished floorboards and fireplace links with a huge family-meals space with concrete-look vinyl flooring and multiple picture windows. Each area has access to a large, elevated, partially covered deck with garden views. The kitchen has stone benchtops and European stainless-steel appliances. The main bedroom has walk-in and built-in wardrobes and a sleek en suite. Two other bedrooms share a luxe bathroom with floating vanity unit, a spa and walk-in shower. There’s also a study. An appealing self-contained two-bedroom unit is a bonus. Solar panels, water tank, drying room, powder room, double carport and remote-controlled double garage are other treats.
In a tightly held spot, around the corner from Spavin Lake, this architect-designed abode on about 920 square metres has big family written all over it. Five large bedrooms (plus a study) include three that share a smart bathroom. Another has an en suite, while the huge main has a walk-in wardrobe and a fully tiled en suite with twin basins. Living areas include a big, carpeted lounge room, a dining zone (floorboards) and a family room (angled ceiling, floorboards underfoot), which opens to a covered entertainment area with a mains gas-connected barbecue. Outdoor lighting and established gardens beautify the area, and there’s a timber cubbyhouse. The appealing kitchen has a timber-topped island bench, an opaque glass-fronted pantry, mid-blue splashback tiles, stainless-steel underbench oven, gas cooktop and dishwasher. Other drawcards are two split-systems, evaporative cooling, ducted heating, under-house storage, 9000-litre water tank and a 6.1 x 4.1-metre shed.

Should the first mention be of the fab panoramic views, from a deep return balcony, of the sun setting on the hills? Does the extraordinary shed, hiding surprise after surprise, deserve top billing? The answer is both, but the big house on its block of about half a hectare is also a winner. The property is just outside Melton, yet hidden away down an easily navigable dirt road and sits amid a gumtree grove milieu with little undergrowth. The house precinct has minimal gardens to maintain, leaving time to enjoy life and plan how a massive under-house area (with numerous “rooms”)

could be best used. Wine storage would make a fine starting point. Timber stairs head up to the double-door entry, beyond which is a wide, tiled hallway with a big smoky mirror filling a ledged recess. The main bedroom and another are on either side, the main with wonderful views, a fitted walk-in wardrobe and a large en suite with dual basins. Three more bedrooms are off the living hub and accessed via multi-paned glass doors, as are the large main bathroom with dual basins and a spa, and the laundry with adjoining storage room rimmed with cupboard storage.
The huge living hub, with access to a balcony with automatic blinds, incorporates a tiled meals zone, kitchen and a family sitting area with inset carpet and a gas log fire. Large and sleek with sandstone-toned vinyl-wrap cabinetry, the kitchen has a walk-in pantry, return island bench and an Emilia 900-millimetre cooker. Heading down external timber stairs will take you to the 18 x 18-metre shed, although that moniker belies what lies within. There’s a workshop with benches galore, then comes a huge man cave/party room with a sleek, fully tiled powder room. Head up open-tread timber stairs from

here and a big gym under a pitched ceiling comes into view. A door opens from there to a mezzanine “balcony” looking down to the workshop. Oh, and the party room opens to a pergola – or space for three cars. Although a fine and functional asset as is, this cleverly configured shed has enormous scope for further usability, while the expansive gravelled surrounds provides capacity for big vehicles. Ducted evaporative cooling, split-system, tank and town water, and cover for seven cars are included. Carole Levy

SPORT Lions pack the pride with recruits and junior coach Prospects continue to get better and better for Sunbury Lions, with a key signing committing full time and a former player returning to coach the under-18.5s. Former Greater Western Sydney rookie Joe Redfern has committed to play with the club full time next season after originally planning to play with Werribee in between VFL commitments. And Wayne Meacham, a former Lions reserves captain, has come on board as under-18.5 coach. Lions coach Rick Horwood said he was thrilled to have Redfern at the club full time. “It was about long-term planning when we signed Joe,” Horwood said. “We figured we might get him for a few games this year, and we’re hoping he would commit to the club full time down the track.
“Now he’s signed on full time and it’s exciting.” Redfern is one of three former VFL players joining the club next season. “It’s exciting times for us, with Grant Valles, Alik Magin and Joe coming on board,” Horwood said. “Once Alik was on board, Joe and Grant wanted to come across as they’re close friends. “Grant will play full time with us as well. He had just about had enough of being in lesser sides [Bendigo and Frankston] and decided his days in the VFL were over. “The three all played at Bendigo together, along with Jack Sheahan and Daniel Toman.” Horwood is excited by what Redfern could achieve. “GWS used him as a midfielder then turned him into a forward,” the coach said.
“At Bendigo, he was back-up ruckman and defender, and at Werribee he was a half-back flanker. We think we’ll use him as bit of a swing man.” The Lions’ offseason recruiting has landed another player in Patrick MacDonough. The signing of Meacham as under-18.5 coach adds more experience to the Lions’ coaching panel. Meacham played eight years in the Lions’ reserves, including several premierships, and returns from the Sunbury Kangaroos. He coached the Kangaroos to the last two Riddell District Football League reserves premierships. The club has also managed to pick up a few more players to add to its under-18.5 squad.
Burras sign AFL pair By Liam Twomey Diggers Rest is leaving no stone unturned in its pursuit of a Riddell District Football League premiership. After three seasons in a row of finishing runners-up, the Burras have added former AFL duo Cale Morton and Taylor Hine to their 2016 squad. Morton, a midfielder and forward, was drafted by Melbourne in 2007 and went on to play 73 games for the Demons. He booted 33 goals in that time before being traded to West Coast at the end of the 2012 season. Morton played three games for the Eagles before being delisted. Last season, the 25-year-old played for Coburg in the VFL. Hine, drafted out of the Calder Cannons, was one of the first players to be selected by expansion club Gold Coast Suns. He played nine games for the Suns before moving to North Melbourne for two years. The 23-year-old is expected to slot into the Burras’ midfield. Diggers Rest coach Shaun Sims said the signings had created a buzz around the club. “They are both quality people and we wouldn’t bring anyone in who isn’t a good person,” Sims said. “One of the main things is that they bring excitement to the club. We had our first training session last week and there was a lot of enthusiasm and excitement about that. “Our guys have the opportunity to play with a couple of really good footballers.” Diggers Rest has also addressed its youngplayer stocks. With access to only a small junior division of the club, the Burras are forced to look at other options for recruiting youngsters. The club has signed teenage trio Billy Fellows, Robbie Burns and Lane Tucker. Fellows and Burns join from Sunbury Lions, while Tucker is from Essendon District Football League club Oak Park. Sims said the bulk of the club’s recruiting was now complete. “We’re pretty much happy with where we’re at,” he said. “We thought our list was pretty good last year so we haven’t gone out and got a heap of players. “That’s because of the points system and because our depth is quite good. We decided to go after two marquee guys and three young kids, who we got relatively early.” Diggers Rest will begin its 2016 campaign against Riddell. Relief for Dogs as new coach signs on Gisborne hopes it will be third time lucky with its latest senior football coaching appointment. The club announced on Wednesday that former reserves and under-18s coach Brad Spear will coach the senior team next season. His appointment follows Rod Sharp stepping aside after being appointed and then his replacement, former AFL coach Jeff Gieschen relinquishing the job over health issues. Bulldogs president Colin Rodgers said it was a relief to have a coach locked in. “There have been a couple of false starts,” he said. “Brad has been in a number of roles at the club. He won a premiership as reserves coach and has coached the under-18s. He’s also been an assistant coach as defensive coach with the senior team.” Rodgers said the Bulldogs’ young list was a major reason Spear had signed on. “He’s a good club person so he put his hand up,” Rodgers said. “It’s a young playing group and he likes to develop young players. He’d have coached a lot of the players at under-18 level and some in the reserves.” Spear said the senior coaching role was a challenge he was more than up for, although the club had lost several of its top players in the offseason. “It’s a bit of a fresh start this year with the seniors and sometimes a clean cut is a good thing,” Spear said. “I will really be looking to fast-track some of our young players with the focus being on improvement and enjoyment. “The opportunity to coach a young group was very appealing. My role will centre on teaching the game as well as coaching, ” says Spear, who took his first training session on Monday last week. “The guys have done a couple of preseason sessions,” Rodgers said. “We had 40-odd at training in the first week and that’s more than this time last year. “It’s a credit to the group and to captain Jarrad Lynch, who’s leading the way. The way he’s carried himself through the early part of preseason shows he’s the right person to captain in 2016.” Tara Murray 37 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ DECEMBER 8, 2015
SPORT STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
United in the box seat By Tara Murray Reigning premier Sunbury United has the upper hand after day one of its clash with cross-town rival Sunbury in Gisborne Cricket’s McIntyre Cup. With the two sides filling the bottom two spots on the ladder, a win is vital for both of last season’s grand finalists. Sunbury chose to bat at Clarke Oval where several of its batsmen got starts but couldn’t go on with it. Four players made 20, but only Heath Boffey passed 21, making 44 of his side’s modest 145. United skipper Jeremy Newman was the best of the bowlers with 4-42. United then faced 10 overs before stumps and will start the second day on 1-18. Jarrod Potter is the batsman out, for a duck, while fellow opener Lance Watts is unbeaten on 10. Elsewhere, Woodend made 199 against Gisborne at Gilbert Gordon Oval. Adam Johnstone continued his good form with 53, while coach Warren Else made 51. Jay King took 4-33 for Gisborne. Romsey opener Ben Way made 81 and Sean Day contributed 63 to their side’s total of 182 against undefeated Riddell. But the pair were the only two to make double figures at Riddell Reserve as Cameron Moran took 4-32 for Riddell. Diggers Rest Bulla’s good run with the bat continued, this time against Bacchus Marsh at Maddingley Park. The Burras shared the runs around on the way to 260 all out. Darren Quarrell top-scored with 57, while Lindon Dowsett made 51. Bacchus Marsh survived one over before stumps and resumes at 0-1.

Brad Janner’s rink lost 26-15, Deeon Dean’s rink won 20-16, Mark Cowan’s lost 21-16, while Brad Willoughby, who returned this week, won 29-15. Sunbury’s Dave Glennon said Willoughby, who played only one round last season, is set to be available for the rest of this year. “He hasn’t played much the past couple of years due to work, but it looks like he’ll play more this season,” Glennon said. “His rink of Mark Clohesy, Sharon Whana and Damien Ely had a perfect eight during their match and it proved to be the difference on the day.” The win keeps Sunbury on top of the ladder ahead of its clash with Craigieburn. All five Sunbury teams recorded victories, with the second team moving into the top four halfway through the season. Glennon says selectors will have a hard task this week with the return of regular skippers Carla Odgers and Elise Cowan. “Normally, we find it difficult this time of year with people not available. “Only Deeon won’t be available this round so we have a headache the other way working out who will be skips in the top division.

Macedon looks to turn around dismal start to season Macedon’s start to the season hasn’t gone to script in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s B-grade competition. With just one win after the opening five rounds, Macedon finds itself on the bottom of the ladder, its finals dreams teetering on the brink. Macedon captain-coach Gary De Rosayro said the season’s start hadn’t gone to plan. “We’ve been missing a few of our senior guys and a few of our players are in their first year of senior cricket,” he said. “We’ve been relying on four to five players to do the job, which we can’t afford to do.
“In every game, we’ve been either good with the bat or ball. We’ve been a bit lacklustre, myself included, but have been competitive in every match, except against Wallan.” De Rosayro said the return of players and the closeness of the competition meant finals hopes were still alive. Only nine points separate Macedon and fourth-placed Bacchus Marsh, while Macedon was one of four clubs with just one win entering round six. “The aim is there to win and get back into McIntyre [Cup],” De Rosayro said. “Obviously it will be hard to get there, but the fixture is in
our favour. We’ll have a lot of players returning and, hopefully, that will help the team.” Macedon will have to wait at least another week to get close to its full side. Several key players are missing the current match against Rupertswood. On day one, Macedon batted first, making 183. The team’s number nine, Nathan Aikman top-scored with 62. Rupertswood was 0-48 at stumps in reply. De Rosayro said having players missing did have some benefits, with Eamon Cooper and Zak Watkins getting a chance to play in the top side.
Cooper has already taken a double hat-trick in the T20 competition. Elsewhere, Lancefield was skittled for 139 against East Sunbury. With 48, Lancefield skipper Luke Barker was the only batsman to build an innings. Ashfield is in control against Bacchus Marsh, bowling them out for 109. Simon Barry was the destroyer, taking 5-19. Ashfield is on its way to victory at 0-57 in reply. In the top-of-the-table clash, Wallan made 9-282 against St Anthonys. Tara Murray
Hawks fill the gaps in bid for finals
New Sunbury Jets import Mitchell Newton. (Joe Mastroianni)
Newton’s theory in train By Tara Murray New Sunbury Jets recruit Mitchell Newton is hoping a change of countries and entering the Big V will ignite his basketball career. Newton made the move to Sunbury from New Zealand three weeks ago after signing with the division 1 club. He said last week the move to the Jets would be a big step forward. His original plans for next year didn’t include moving away from home. “I was going to play in the New Zealand National Basketball League again next season when Andrew Summerville [Jets’ men’s coach] messaged me and asked if I wanted to come over,” Newton said. “I thought I may as well give it a go. “If I stayed where I was in New Zealand there would have been no pre-season, and I wouldn’t have been on court until March-April. So I have a good chance to develop in the pre-season
here,” said 20-year-old Newton, who played with Southland Sharks in the NZNBL for four years and was part of two championships sides. But despite reaching the top level in New Zealand, Newton thinks it’s in Australia that he’ll make his mark. “I’ll probably get a lot more minutes out here than I would in the NZNBL. “It’s another one of the reasons I decided to make the move to Sunbury. Last season, I played about 87 minutes all up.” A late starter, Newton came into representative basketball at age 15. He represented New Zealand as a junior on the international stage and last year toured the Philippines and Taiwan as part of a New Zealand select squad under the banner of Wellington Saints. “All my family plays basketball and I love the game,” he said. “I lived in the country and couldn’t get to the league so I didn’t start playing properly until I
was 15, when I began playing rep. I want to play NBL in future so I’m hoping I can use my time here to get onto a development squad. “Getting more game time will help with that,” Newton said. “They can’t see you if you’re not playing. I want to play professionally and go as far as I can go.” Newton will also help the association with its Aussie Hoops, Flight Path and sporting schools programs. Jets men’s coach Andrew Summerville said while Newton was a surprising addition to the Big V roster, he was a promising talent. “He had limited opportunities playing in a star-studded championship team in the NZNBL, so he will flourish in our team with greater opportunities and responsibilities. “He has a rare blend of size, speed and athleticism and has already proven at practice that he will have an impact on the court this season.”
After taking massive steps forward this year, Woodend-Hesket is hoping it has added key pieces of the jigsaw to be a finals contender in the Riddell District Football League. The Hawks have struggled in recent years but are starting to show signs they’ll no longer be one of the competition’s easybeats. Hawks playing coach Ross Sleight said the aim in the off-season had been finding players to complement this year’s line-up. “Everyone is staying on board and the aim was to go out and get people to fill roles,” Sleight said. “We added a lot of players last season and it’s about continuing that process.” The Hawks have been one of the busiest teams in the off-season with six signings, the biggest being Woodend junior Ben Toman, who played most of his 2015 football with VFL team Northern Blues. “It’s a massive bonus to have Ben playing with us permanently,” Sleight said. “He played five games with us in 2015 and finished in the top five of our best and fairest award. His experience with Northern Blues will be invaluable.” Getting key forwards was among Sleight’s first tasks. “We lacked height and targets,” he said, We tried people through the forward line, but it didn’t work. Now we’ve got Josh Smerdon from Rupertswood and he’ll be a key forward. “Woodend junior Tom Gawthorp has returned to the club and will play as our centre half-forward. He was with Calder Cannons this year as a 19 year old.” The Hawks also aimed to aid some pace to complement the current midfield group. “We have the bigger bodies who can get the ball, but we didn’t have anyone to flick it out to,” Sleight said. “Jarrod Arnold is a running wingman who will prove to be vital, while we’ve got a couple of 18-year-olds from Avondale Heights, Blake Laverie and Jordan Filakis, who will add more pace.” A big part of the recruiting for the Hawks was getting players who would fit straight into the club. “I haven’t got anyone who doesn’t know people here,” Sleight said. “I’ve known Josh Smerdon for years and he knows a lot of our players. Blake Laverie’s brother, Trent, already plays for us. The focus was to make sure they didn’t feel like outsiders.” The Hawks will also be boosted by the return of Sleight, who missed half of 2015 through injury. “It’s the first time I’ve really been injured in my career and I want to give back to the club,” he said.
