Kyneton turns on the festive cheer

RAY, ROCHELLE, SANTA, DAVID AND MAY ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO CHRISTMAS IN KYNETON

A large team of volunteers will serve up a warm welcome to guests at this year’s community Christmas Day lunch at Kyneton. A traditional spread and plenty of festive spirit will be shared as part of the eighth annual alcohol-free event, organised by Macedon Ranges council and Cobaw Community Health. ‘‘[It’s] a wonderful opportunity to get together at a special time of year,’’ Cr Jennifer Anderson says. ‘‘We can help with transport if you are unable to get to the hall and we’ve even got Santa coming along with a sack-full of presents.’’ The dinner will be at Kyneton town hall, 11.30am-2pm on Christmas Day. Bookings: 1300 888 802 or kthtickets@mrsc.vic.gov.au

Grass fire arsonist alert Landholders are being urged to look out for suspicious activity and take down the number plates of unfamiliar vehicles after six fires were deliberately lit north of Malmsbury. Detectives from the Kyneton criminal investigation unit are also seeking information that might lead them to whoever is responsible for the fires, which were lit in grass near Metcalfe, Rosewall and Elphinstone about 10pm last Wednesday. Police scoured burnt land on Thursday

morning, looking for clues about the fires, which were started beside the Old Calder Highway, Taradale-Metcalfe Road and Malmsbury-Metcalfe Road. There were no reports of injuries, livestock or property damage, but a family had to be evacuated when one of the fires briefly threatened their house. Detective Senior Constable Wade Andrews said police believed the arsonist was driving a car or riding a motorbike as about 15 kilometres was covered in a short time. ‘‘We don’t have any suspects at this stage, so

we’re appealing for anyone with information to come forward,’’ Detective Senior Constable Andrews said. The largest blaze was estimated to have burnt five hectares of grassland. Detective Senior Constable Andrews said that while conditions were relatively mild last Wednesday night, the fires could have caused significantly more damage. ‘‘At this time of year, it’s so dry … it’s high risk,’’ he said. Detective Senior Constable Andrews said anyone who noticed unusual behaviour,

especially on high fire danger days, should trust their instincts. ‘‘Don’t be afraid to notify police,’’ he said. ‘‘Make those observations and pass it through to Crime Stoppers or the local station.’’ Police and the CFA have vowed to take a zero-tolerance approach to blazes caused by illegal or negligent behaviour, with experts predicting a very dry fire season, starting earlier and finishing later than usual. Anyone with information about last week’s fires should phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Whooping cough alert ‘‘Being educated and knowing the incubation period is very important.’’ The spokeswoman said immunisation was the best defence against the disease. Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is extremely serious for babies and kills one in every 125 infants under six months who develop the illness. Health Department figures obtained by Star Weekly reveal there have been 43 confirmed cases in the Macedon Ranges this year, down slightly from 47 in 2014 but still up from 31 in 2013. A spokesman said only two cases in the Macedon Ranges this year involved children aged under five. ‘‘A further six cases were aged five to nine years, and seven cases were aged 10-14,’’ he said.

A cluster of whooping cough cases at Gisborne has prompted medical authorities to ask parents to be alert for symptoms of the highly contagious disease. They’ve also been urged to ensure their children’s immunisations are up-to-date. Eleven Gisborne schoolchildren have reportedly been diagnosed with whooping cough in recent weeks. The illness can be debilitating for sufferers, many of whom exhibit a prolonged cough that can last up to three months. A Gisborne Medical Centre spokeswoman said that while cases of whooping cough were a concern, there was no need for parents to panic. ‘‘It does come in cycles,’’ she said.

Children diagnosed with whooping cough are usually instructed to miss school for five days after antibiotic treatment begins, or 21 days from the onset of coughing. Unimmunised children aged under seven who have been in the same room as reported cases must be excluded from school for 14 days from the last exposure, or five days after starting a course of antibiotics. In September, Hume council started a campaign to spread coverage of free vaccines among school students, after a 275 per cent spike in the number of whooping cough cases. A total of 139 cases were reported in Hume in the year to July 1 – up from 37 in 2014. More than 1200 students did not receive booster vaccines during visits to schools because families did not return consent forms.

Western Water has been fined more than $7000 after discharging treated waste water into Jacksons Creek over a six-week period. The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has confirmed that the water retailer was fined $7584 this month after class-C water was released from the Riddells Creek treatment plant, which services Macedon and Riddells Creek, in July. The treated water is typically used for agricultural purposes, and testing done in the wake of the deliberate release found evidence of changes to the water environment downstream. ‘These were shown to have had a low impact,’’ EPA north-west manager Danny Childs said. ‘‘But this is a breach of Western Water’s EPA licence, which states that waste water from the premises must not be discharged to the environment.’’ Western Water customer and community relations manager Graham Holt said the EPA had been alerted prior to the discharge, which was part of a long-term recycled water plan more than a year in the making. Mr Holt said the release was necessary because storages at the plant had filled up as demand fell away, with irrigators not needing the water due to good rains. ‘‘If Western Water had not released the water, there was a risk of uncontrolled spilling, which could have had an impact on the environment.’’ Mr Holt said local stakeholders had also been advised, and people using the waterways from July would not have experienced any ill-effects, with quality staying within the recreational limits required by legislation. ‘‘We worked hard to ensure the recycled water was released in a controlled way to minimise changes to water quality,’’ Mr Holt said. ‘‘This was helped by increased natural flows in the river from rainfall.’’ About 0.6 megalitres was released each day, close to one-tenth of flows at the time. Mr Holt said Western Water had introduced interim measures to manage low demand for recycled water. A review of recycled water management is also under way. Matt Crossman

Sunbury children are being encouraged to join kids like Hannah (pictured) and lose themselves in a book – or 20 – as part of Hume council’s summer reading club. Prizes including Samsung tablets, Lego, board games and book vouchers are on offer for youngsters up to 17 who complete a reading record, available from libraries and online. There’s a range of categories for different age groups. Mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou says the theme of this summer’s challenge, which ends January 31, is lost worlds. ‘‘Stories can inspire and teach new skills, and they also help us escape to somewhere completely different,’’ she says. Airport road ‘choked’

Fight for bike path goes on

By Matt Crossman

Cyclists have criticised the state government’s response to calls to extend a dangerous path beside Vineyard Road at Sunbury. As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, the VicRoads-managed path currently ends at Moore Road, about 200 metres short of the Calder Freeway overpass, forcing cyclists and pedestrians heading for Diggers Rest to cross onto the road. Sunbury Bicycle Users Group member Hector Bugeja wrote to Roads Minister Luke Donnellan and Sunbury MP Josh Bull, who shares his concerns, calling for urgent action. But Mr Bugeja said a recent response from Mr Donnellan’s office, which talked of strategies and possible major upgrades in the longer term, was disappointing. ‘‘That’s all good, but for the moment it’s such an easy fix,’’ he said. ‘‘There’s just got to be somebody prepared to put up the money.’’ VicRoads metro north-west regional director Vince Punaro said path improvements would be considered as part of a $100 million program for new facilities across the state. He also promised to contact Mr Bugeja. Hume council’s acting city infrastructure director David Fricke said the council had previously assessed whether a simple extension was feasible. ‘‘It is difficult … because of the narrow bridge and the need to cross the entry and exit lanes,’’ Mr Fricke said. The failure of successive governments to duplicate Sunbury Road and construct a Bulla bypass is frustrating thousands of commuters and holding tourism back. That’s the view of Hume council, which has again pleaded for state or federal authorities to act. With more than 23,000 vehicles using the road north of Melbourne Airport every day, mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou said the choked, undivided carriageway was already at breaking point. She said the fact that Sunbury’s population was expected to increase 70 per cent by 2030 made extra lanes and the long-mooted Bulla bypass even more necessary. There were 60 crashes, including two fatalities, on Sunbury Road in the last recorded five-year period. ‘‘We want Hume’s major arterials to be safe for every motorist,’’ Cr Patsikatheodorou said. Precinct structure plans allow for an extra 14,000 houses to be built east of Sunbury, while thousands of dwellings will be constructed on Lancefield and Sunbury roads. ‘‘Sunbury’s population will rise … and many residents will need to smoothly access their place of work in Melbourne’s north,’’ the mayor said. The busy road is also used by tourists heading to Sunbury wineries, the Alister Clark Memorial Rose Garden at Bulla and racehorse retirement home Living Legends at Woodlands Historic Park. Cr Patsikatheodorou said better roads would attract even more visitors. A government spokesman said VicRoads was undertaking detailed planning to reserve land to link Melbourne Airport and a future outer metro ring road, including the Bulla bypass.

Class move robs Peter to pay Paul By Matt Crossman The Malmsbury community has vowed to fight on to save a portable classroom, which is about to be relocated to metropolitan Melbourne. Close to 1000 people signed an online petition urging the Education Department to abandon plans to move the room, used for French and music classes at Malmsbury Primary School, before the start of the next school year. School council president Kirsty Doyle said there had been a groundswell of support since the school, which has about 70 pupils, was told

of the department’s intentions late last month. Musicians Kate Miller-Heidke, Katie Noonan and Mental as Anything are among those calling for the portable to stay at the school. ‘‘It pretty much came out of the blue, and they’re not offering any alternative,’’ Ms Doyle said. ‘‘They’re expecting us to use an existing space to run the programs.’’ She said while the classes would still go ahead outdoors or in another space, the loss of the room would have an effect on how classes are delivered.

‘‘The fear is it’s going to have a major impact,’’ Ms Doyle said. ‘‘A lot of people come to our school because of our music programs. They’re a huge part of our curriculum.’’ Ms Doyle said the school had been buoyed by wider public support, with many people signing the petition and joining a letter-writing campaign. ‘‘There’s been a lot of people who have no children, no connection with the school, but they’re fighting with us. That’s pretty awesome.’’ Upper house Liberal MP Wendy Lovell slammed the government for putting the

needs of city pupils ahead of those in country areas. ‘‘The Malmsbury community is understandably upset that this will place their students at a disadvantage,’’ she said. ‘‘There is no real alternative space to deliver these programs.’’ Urging Education Minister James Merlino to intervene, Macedon Labor MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the previous Liberal government had left the department with few choices. ‘‘The minister is in an unenviable situation as a consequence of the previous government’s disgraceful neglect,’’ Ms Thomas said.

Health hub for Romsey The health and recreation needs of growing communities in the east of the Macedon Ranges are a step closer to being met, with the federal government providing almost $1 million for a shared centre at a former school site. The council, Greater Romsey All Abilities Park committee and Cobaw Community Health last week welcomed $997,478 for the joint project to redevelop the historic site on the corner of Main and Palmer streets. The former school building will be transformed into a community health hub, with upgrades and extensions to provide consulting rooms, reception and waiting areas and a community meeting space. A community park will be developed in the picturesque grounds. Cr Henry McLaughlin said the project would restore a historic community asset and improve health services in the area. ‘‘It will also accommodate the growing

community and create a public space that will be visited by people from the Macedon Ranges and beyond and become a favourite destination for many years to come,’’ he said. Cobaw chief executive Margaret McDonald said the development would give the health service, which has centres in Woodend and Kyneton, full coverage across the municipality. The next stage of planning is expected to begin early next year, with residents given the opportunity to share their ideas for the site. Matt Crossman

Reserve users fight back By Matt Crossman Users of a popular swimming hole at Macedon have formed a group to work with authorities to stop illegal campers trashing the reserve. Friends of the Res spokeswoman Jess Maude said antisocial behaviour at the reservoir, near Nursery Lane, had increased significantly in recent years after the picturesque spot featured on several travel blogs. Problems have ranged from loud music at all hours and extensive littering, to trees being cut down, illegal fires and even rocks being thrown. ‘‘We’ve heard from many users who have been intimidated or threatened when they’ve dared to complain,’’ Ms Maude said. ‘‘We don’t have any problem with people from out of town using the res, but everyone has to abide by the rules.’’ Ms Maude said some people had become hesitant to go walking or swimming there. ‘‘Everyone should be able to enjoy this beautiful place without being yelled at, without rubbish left everywhere and cars hooning in and out. It’s just not the place it used to be.” A Friends meeting last Thursday night secured support from stakeholders, including Hancock Victorian Plantations and Parks Victoria. Police, promising to conduct regular patrols, and the CFA are also on board, while discussions with V/Line will continue. ‘‘We’re looking at getting some signs up, cleaning up the area and really looking at getting some change,’’ Ms Maude said. The Friends have set up a Facebook group. Details: goo.gl/NAjCBx

Sunbury petrol ‘tax’ claim Sunbury motorists appear to be victims of a ‘tax’, a driver who has undertaken a detailed comparison of petrol prices believes. Steve Coughlan started a tally of prices in Sunbury, Craigieburn and Bulla after noticing frequent social media complaints about discrepancies between unleaded prices in the three towns. ‘‘I’ve only been doing it for about a week, but there’s a five to six cent [per litre] difference,’’ he said. ‘‘That might not sound like much, but it sure adds up if you’re topping up and using 60 to 80 litres a week.’’ Mr Coughlan, who plans to broaden his fuel watch to areas such as Watergardens, said there was a definite trend. ‘‘Prices [on Thursday] in Craigieburn are down to $1.16 a litre and in Sunbury they’re still around $1.24,’’ he said. ‘‘Unfortunately, it seems like there’s a Sunbury tax and there’s no reason for it. It’s just as easy to transport fuel to Sunbury as it is to Craigieburn.’’ Mr Coughlan said he had received responses from BP and Coles Express. ‘‘It was the stock standard ‘we have a number of factors which determine our pricing’, but they aren’t saying which one of these factors means Sunbury has to pay more,’’ he said. The Australasian Convenience and Petroleum Marketers Association, BP and Coles Express did not respond by deadline. Matt Crossman

Woodend firefighters tucked into some choc-cherry peppermint rolls as part of a special presentation by children at Woodend Primary School. Prep and grade 1 pupils invited volunteers Mike Selby and Mike Dornau to the school last week, surprising them with morning tea and a pile of handmade cards. The event was organised with help from teachers keen to show children how good it can feel to give to and acknowledge the efforts of others. The kids also received something in return, having the chance to spray some water from one of the brigade’s tankers. ‘‘It was as much a pleasure for us as it was for the kids,’’ Mr Dornau said. ‘‘They made a fantastic effort with their cards, and some of the sentiments they expressed were priceless.’’

Cheque on the wildlife You don’t have to be able to talk to the animals to give them a helping hand, as Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network supporters discovered. RT Edgar Macedon Ranges real estate’s Rhys Nuttal and Josie Borg last week handed over $250 to MRWN spokeswoman Fiona Corke to allow animal rescuers like Lynda Pope continue their work. Ms Corke says the agency is the latest organisation to support the network, which has close to 60 members. New volunteers are also welcome. ‘‘Whether it’s helping at a wildlife shelter, fundraising, giving our rescuers on the road a bit of a break or holding an awareness day at your work, we’re always looking for people to give others a break,’’ Ms Corke says.

A new agency is providing a different perspective of the local property market, offering what’s believed to be the Macedon Ranges’ first drone real estate photography service. In another shift from the traditional business model, Central Ranges Real Estate is also operating via a virtual office, rather than a physical shopfront. Director Helen Milner said the agency wanted to ‘‘shake up’’ the way property services are provided. ‘‘Real estate’s been very much same old, same old for a long time,’’ she said. ‘‘While the price of houses and commissions have gone up, there’s been little change in how properties are actually sold.’’ Ms Milner said the agency was keen to support owner-sellers. ‘‘We will give people wanting to sell themselves the option of listing through us, and throw in the drones and home staging for free,’’ she said. ‘‘That’s the kind of thing no one else offers.’’ The agency is taking listings from across the state, but its main focus will be Lancefield, the Macedon Ranges and the western part of Mitchell shire. Ms Milner, who comes from a home staging and local government background, and co-director Colin Smith, a keen property investor, are licensed to sell property. Mr Smith is also a qualified drone pilot, ensuring a bird’s eye view of each property’s unique features.

Alert to Macedon Ranges residents. Can you please object to the council’s rural living land-grab, Amendment C110? It’s wrong in so many ways. The council is consulting and listening to some more than others. Council is ignoring its adopted growth strategy. Amendment C110 puts an additional 1000 people in the shire. Amendment C110 intensifies existing, and creates new, housing opportunities in rural areas by dramatically lowering existing subdivision sizes, removing existing restrictions on subdivision of alreadysubdivided land, and rezoning farming land. The council wants this new, unsewered housing development in the sensitive rural landscapes at the shire’s southern gateways, from south of Gisborne to Riddells Creek, on high-quality agricultural soils at Romsey and in a drinking water catchment at Kyneton. This type of development has long been identified as a threat to Macedon Ranges’ values. It depletes agricultural potential, creates land-use conflicts and additional demand for infrastructure and services in rural areas, and irreparably damages the environment and landscapes that this shire relies on for tourism. It’s the complete opposite of “protecting” Macedon Ranges – it’s what Macedon Ranges needs to be protected from. It’s almost Christmas and the council is counting on you being too busy to notice or object. Prove them wrong by putting in a short submission by December 23 (mrsc@ mrsc.vic,gov.au) telling council to abandon Amendment C110, copy to the Planning Minister (richard.wynne@parliament.vic.gov. au) and Macedon MLA Mary-Anne Thomas

TRAVEL STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

The timeless, tasty allure of Hoi An One of Vietnam’s most popular destinations, Hoi An has a relaxed charm that makes you want to stay, writes David Bonnici You’ll seldom hear a bad word said about Hoi An, which is often the highlight of Vietnam holidays be they of backpackers, families or older tourists. This charming, UNESCO world heritage city has buildings dating back to the 15th century and provides a glimpse to a past when traders from China and around South-East Asia ventured up the Thu Bon River to the small port. Narrow streets in the old town lead to a riverfront with old yellow-washed buildings on either side connected by a footbridge. During summer, the relative cool of the evening brings everyone out and the place is abuzz with tourists and hawkers. The sight of candles floating down the river provides a calming influence. Candlelight is a big part of the monthly full-moon celebrations – on the 14th day of the lunar months, the town’s lights are dimmed and the river is aglow. During the rest of the month, old ladies sell candles with promises of good luck and love being part of their sales pitches. Once you oblige, they place them on the water using long sticks. Colourful paper and bamboo lanterns festooned around town and hanging in front of shops add to the spectacle. A night market mostly sells souvenirs. Haggling is encouraged. I got into a particularly terse price war with a fierce young woman all of 11 years old who kept asking “oh my god man, what the hell are you on about?” whenever I gave her a price. As is the Hoi An way it was all good natured but with a good deal of cheek. The laid-back attitude of Hoi An and its people lulls you into a relaxed groove of

sun-soaked, sleepy days and indulgent evenings that will have you wishing you had booked a longer stay. It’s not a party town in the seedy sense and its nightlife is mostly centred around food.

Food is key

out yet the quality of the food doesn’t seem to suffer. It’s run by local foodie royalty Trinh Diem Vy, known as Ms Vy, who is famous around the country for her international take on Vietnamese cuisine.

MACEDONRANGES.STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

She also runs the Mermaid and Cargo Club restaurants and The Market Restaurant & Cooking School. At Morning Glory, I had squid stuffed with minced pork and easily won dinner that night. Cooked in a quintessential chilli and lemongrass marinate, this is up there with the tastiest dishes I have ever had – think about it: Squid – stuffed with pork! Another nice spot was The Chef, on a rooftop above an incredibly charming old bookshop. Overlooking the ancient terracotta roofline of the old city, it is particularly fetching at sunset. Guests are welcome just for a drink. It has a great wine list and plenty of by-the-glass options – a rarity in Vietnam. Food is also big business in Hoi An by way of cooking classes, which you can do for a few hours or even over a few days. The Hoi An Beach resort where we stayed offered a cooking class for its guests. For US$35, we travelled to the wonderful Hoi An market with the hotel’s head chef, who showed us around as he bought produce. After that, we took a river boat back to the resort before learning how to prepare dishes including fresh prawn spring rolls, yellow chicken curry and the delightful-looking turmeric fish wrapped in banana leaf. Then we ate it all.

Tailor made

Hoi An’s other big industry is clothing. Tailor shopfronts are everywhere. If you walk through the quiet laneways past the small homes, you’ll see people at work on sewing machines making everything from three-piece suits and ball gowns to shoes and leather jackets. Choosing a tailor is tricky – there’s so many. Word of mouth is good, and you can generally get good tips from fellow hotel guests backed up by Tripadvisor. Make sure you get an address – there are often different businesses with almost identical names. Get fitted out as soon as you can during your stay. The tailors can generally make clothes

TRAVEL

within 24 hours but it’s good to leave time for alterations. We went to Tuong Clothes Shop (www. tuongtailor.com) on a recommendation – one I’d happily pass on. I got a leather jacket made there just by showing them a few pictures on my phone and I can’t fault the quality.

A place to stay

Accommodation options abound in Hoi An – from backpacker hostels and three-star hotels costing about $30 a night to five-star luxury resorts nudging four figures. You can stay in town or on the coast a couple of kilometres away. The Hoi An Beach Resort (www. hoianbeachresort.com.vn) was great value for under $200 a night. Rooms are in villas that have two upstairs and two downstairs rooms – very nice for the price. I suggest a river view room as the beach views overlook the road between the resort and shore. This friendly resort has a couple of pools, a nice open-air restaurant and bar overlooking the river. The only downside is it’s a bit out of town, though the hotel has shuttle buses or you can catch a cab for around $5. Hoi An Beach resort has it’s own beach across the road with plenty of deck chairs and a bar. The beach itself was washed away during a storm surge last year so they had to place sand bags between the grass area and the water. Fortunately, you don’t really notice them as they blend with the sand that’s slowly returning to reclaim the shore. To avoid such weather, it’s best to visit in summer, between late May and June, when it’s hot, dry and calm.

Getting there

Top to bottom: The centuries-old architecture provides a glimpse into Vietnam’s past. (David Bonnici) The Hoi An Market continues to trade as it has for centuries. (Tony Bonnici) Tumeric fish in banana leaf made during a cooking class. (David Bonnici)

Getting thereHoi An is a 30-minute drive from Da Nang International Airport. A taxi will cost about $20. To encourage people to travel beyond Saigon, Vietnam Airlines offers a free return internal flight as part of your air fare from Melbourne.

With more than 70 squares under its roof, this amazing residence offers resort-style living, the embodiment of which is the indoor pool that has an adjoining raised area (with floorboards) to gather after a swim. A gym, a huge bar with beer taps, and a vast rumpus room add to the amenity. The house is replete with architectural embellishments that add to the glam, and enough space to accommodate a large family or an influx of visitors. The six bedrooms share four bathrooms, and one forms a guest suite. The kitchen has a crescent-shaped island bench, a stack of storage and all the mod-cons. The adjoining meals area (with wood heater) sits under a dramatically skylit, double-height pitched ceiling, and a glassed corridor integrates with a paved courtyard. Gas ducted heating, evaporative cooling, a dam, a workshop and well-established gardens add to the appeal of a property within a stone’s throw of Hanging Rock, Newham village and schools.

Transformed over 43 years into one of the finest showpiece properties on Mount Macedon, Wayandah (meaning ‘watering place of horses’) has had little expense spared in its making. Smart and contemporary throughout, the house is on about 4.03 hectares and is blessed with huge windows to maximise views of the Mount’s memorial cross and beyond. Entry is into a vast, tri-zone living hub, with a carpeted sitting area beneath a spacious mezzanine gallery/study area, a tiled family-meals area under double-height ceiling and the stylish kitchen. Four bedrooms include the main, which has access to a Vergola-topped deck (with electric sunblinds) and fenced, solar-heated pool beyond. A wood heater, split-systems and zoned ducted heating tame the climate. Along with 1.21 hectares of sensational gardens, there’s a dam (with pumps), three paddocks, stockyards, cattle crush, three-bay shed, horse shelter, carport and workshop.

Smart and contemporary, this house on about 4000 square metres is within five minutes of wonderful Kyneton, and has easy access to the train station. Three bedrooms have built-in or walk-in wardrobes, and a study could be a fourth bedroom. The main bedroom has a sleek en suite. Double doors usher in a lounge room and the large open-plan living hub has walnut floating floorboards and wall-hung cabinetry. The colour palette of mocha and white complements the modern feel here. The kitchen, under a stepped bulkhead, has white cabinetry, stone benchtops, a butler’s pantry and quality appliances. Outdoor entertainment spots include a covered deck and a bluestone-paved patio with open fire, pizza oven and built-in barbecue. Double glazing, gas ducted heating, evaporative cooling, cabling throughout, alarm, eco carpets, vegie and herb boxes, town water and an integrated double garage with workshop space are other features.

Owner-built with fastidious attention to detail, this new 40-square residence on about 2085 square metres has a 7.5-star energy rating, a 5kW (22 panels) solar system with remote monitoring, double glazing and LED lighting throughout, and zoned heating and cooling. Light-filled and modern, it has fantastic picture windows, dramatic bulkheads, clerestory windows and soaring ceilings. American oak floorboards and top-notch carpets add to the class. Four bedrooms share two fabulous bathrooms, one with a freestanding stone bath. The main bedroom’s en suite has a walk-in double shower, and there’s a fitted walk-in wardrobe. Living areas are a large lounge room, a meals zone and children’s lounge room. There’s also a study that links to a library and powder room. The kitchen has a waterfall stone island bench, a butler’s pantry and French appliances. A covered deck has an inbuilt barbecue, fridge and sink. A garden shed and double garage are other treats.

This flawlessly presented house and garden has a mighty fine kerbside presence, but it’s inside where the true high notes are hit. It’s a showcase of subtly chic interior decor and a clever blurring of indoor-outdoor boundaries. Flowing, calming and very classy, the unfailing colour palette is white on walls and cabinetry, black on stone benches, grey carpets and tiles, and all windows dressed in a mix of grey sheers and/or dove-grey textured blinds. Floorboards are jarrah, extra-height doors have opaque glazing and others are space-expanding in-wall sliders, although space is definitely not an issue.

Flanking the wide entry hall are a carpeted lounge room, with a ceiling perimeter bulkhead and contemporary gas log fire, and an extra-big main bedroom, with fitted dressing room and large en suite with dual basins, walk-in shower and enclosed toilet. Three more big bedrooms are down a tiled hallway, as are a walk-in linen closet, a powder room, a great laundry, and the sleek main bathroom. Jarrah floorboards anchor the huge family-meals zone, where bifolds cunningly conceal a study space with stone desk and open shelves. Behind in-wall double sliders,

a carpeted theatre/sitting room makes up the third living space. The skylit kitchen is a streamlined workspace, with an angled island bench (black stone), a butler’s pantry with sink in a stone bench, soft-grey glass splashback and, each bearing the Siemens tag, a wall oven, 900mm induction cooktop, integrated microwave and concealed dishwasher. Glazed bifolds open to an entertainment space, fully enclosed with windows, while glazed doors lead to a timber elevated deck rimmed with garden greenery. Large, bright and eminently

weather-friendly, this large room has a built-in barbecue and gas cooktop on a stainless-steel bench, a sink and numerous cupboards. Stairs from the entry hall go down to the double garage, which has a stainless-steel workbench and two storage rooms (either perfect for wine). A garden shed is concealed outside the garage roller door, and automatic side gates open to a sealed aggregate parking lane running along a stone wall, which retains an elevated lawn edged with plantings. Christmas is almost upon us and this is a good time to reflect on many issues that are confronting this troubled world. Christmas is a time to reflect upon the “true” meaning of the season. A refugee family travelled to escape persecution and, in Bethlehem their baby boy was born in a stable. This is the story of Christmas and this is the foundation of the Christian religion. A baby born who, as a man changed the philosophy of many and whose fundamental teachings “love thy neighbour as thyself” and “do unto others as you would have them unto you” still ring true today. This season reflect upon these teachings which, when broken down show us to respect others and their beliefs. In these troubled times it seems to me that respect for others has largely disappeared. We W are confronted by angry people who want to “rule” the world with hate and violence. We W are confronted by weakness in our own country allowing a minority group to dictate that we cannot sing Christmas Carols or say Merry Christmas – what rubbish! I am happy to respect the traditions of others, show me, a third generation proud Australian the same respect! This Christmas reflect on the importance of family and friends. Reflect on the true meaning of Christmas and reflect on the need for Respect!

Dr. Tony Stubbs, Eye Surgeon, says that just about anyone can have their vision restored and be rid of their glasses for most of the time. And this is without the use of laser surgery. Dr Stubbs, a visiting specialist at the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital who has worked with the Fred Hollows eye department at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, says he began his career through the inspiration of his father, Dr Maxwell Stubbs.

A specialist who helps people who have been advised they are unsuitable for laser surgery, Dr Stubbs is also committed to demonstrating that age, corneal distortion or astigmatism are no barriers to eliminating the need for glasses.

Dr. Tony Stubbs Eye Surgeon

One of my best moments was treating a 12-year-old girl who was struggling at school because of poor vision due to congenital cataracts even with the use of thick glasses. Now 10 years later, she still has 20/20 vision without glasses. That inspires me. “Seeing my patients’ bright smiles after surgery, as they stop squinting and can read without glasses, is definitely the best part of my job.”

“My father was a pioneer in cataract implant surgery from 1963! He has now passed away but some of his patients still come in for a check-up. Not only is this inspirational, it also demonstrates that good surgery outlasts the surgeon,” Dr Stubbs says.

SPORT Sunbury superkids smash another state record Sunbury Little Athletics centre’s under-15 boys relay team has broken an Australian record for a second straight year at Little Athletics Victoria’s state relay championships. After breaking the under-14 4 x 100 metres record last year, they repeated the feat in the same event in the higher age group, recording 44.64 to ecclipse the standing 44.82 and beat the runners-up by a full two seconds. The team of Melvin Monleh, Sebastian Bell-Bartels, Brennan Wilkins and Cody Rodwell won the race by more than two seconds. Making the feat even more remarkable was the fact that key runner Junior Mabia, who won the 100 and 200 metres at the Australian titles last year, was out injured. The boys also took gold in the medley relay, winning by more than four seconds.

They were unable to make it three gold medals after being disqualified in the heats of the 200 metres. Last season, Monleh, Bell-Bartels, Wilkins, Rodwell and Mabia dominated the relay championships, winning three titles and breaking three state and one national record in the under-14 age group. They also won all three titles when they were in the under-13 age group in 2013. Of Sunbury’s other teams, the under-9 boys made the final of the 4 x 200 in their first state championship. The team of Lucas Arbanas, Alex Fish, Riley Coughlan and Jameson Haxby finished eighth- fastest in the state. The under-9 boys 4 x 100- metre teams finished 11th. The under-11 team of Byron Lynch, Jake Phillips, Mitchyl Doherty, Zachary Stevens

competed in the 4 x 100 metres and 4 x 200 metres. They broke Sunbury’s centre record for the 4 x 100 at the region titles on the way to the championships. On Saturday they finished 18th in the 100 metres and 13th in the 200 metres. Meanwhile, two other Sunbury teams broke centre records at the region relays. The under-8 team of Bridie Berne, Alyssa Evans, Eden Wilkins and Indiana Stott broke the 4 x 100 best time. The under-12 boys team of Tyson Moffatt, Liam Denner, Jezz Petrincic and Elias Kahsay missed qualifying for the state titles but broke Sunbury’s 4 x 100 record. Tara Murray

Rupertswood players make up more than half the Riddell District Netball League line-up named in the league’s 19-and-under team to play in the regional Victorian Netball League, previously known as the Regional State League. Rupertswood’s Jess Maitland-Smith will coach the team, which will include the Sharks’ Georgia Baseggio, Michelle Cliffe, Holly Keating, Emily Ktona, Lara Keating and Danielle Scardamaglia. Leshae Hogan will be the team’s training partner. Riddell’s Meikah Johns, Gisborne Rookies’ Holly Doricic and Melinda Luke, and Melton Centrals’ Kali Joyce are also on board.

AFL

Essendon will return to Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges next year as part of Australia Post-AFL community camps. The Bombers visited the area earlier this year for their 2015 camp, which included school visits and football clinics. Next year, the Bombers will be in Sunbury, Lancefield and Riddells Creek on March 3 and 4. Carlton will spend time in Kyneton the same week.

Bowls

Riddell’s Cameron Moran makes his ground on his way to 23 against Romsey. (Shawn Smits)

History class for Riddell By Tara Murray Riddell is in a familiar situation as Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup approaches the Christmas break. This time last year, Riddell was sitting on top of the ladder but lost for the first time in the second-last match before the break. It then struggled for consistency and ultimately was knocked out in the finals. A year later, history has repeated, with Riddell losing its first game of the season in the second-last match before Christmas, this time against Romsey at Riddell Reserve on Saturday. Speaking before the game, Riddell captaincoach Heath Wadden said his players were well aware of what they needed to do. “We can’t get complacent and let arrogance come into the side,” Wadden said. “It can turn so quickly, so we have to make sure we train and play the way we have to.

We’ve learnt a lot from last year. Some of the guys weren’t here then and we now have more depth for players to go up and down.” Riddell was bowled out for 124 on Saturday, well short of the 183 needed for victory against Romsey. After losing both openers with the total on one, Riddell struggled to get a solid partnership going although a number of players made reasonable starts. Hayden Ross top-scored with 32. But it wasn’t all bad news for Riddell, which won the GDCA’s premier division T20 title last week. The grand final against Sunbury United on Tuesday night came down to the final over. For much of the night Riddell looked to have control, but United kept bouncing back. United batted first and made 9-132 after some late hitting from James Hughes (23 not out). Wadden said the key to restricting United

was grabbing the key wicket of opener Ryan Billinghurst, who made 37. “We bowled tight early on and Ryan was the one we need to get out,” Wadden said. “Once we got a couple of quick wickets, including him, we were on track. “They then got some late runs to push up the score.” Riddell was cruising at 2-72 at the halfway mark of its innings. “Cameron Moran had knuckled down and he did the job,” Wadden said. “We got a good start then flat-lined so that we needed eight to nine runs an over towards the end.” Wadden (18) hit the winning runs with three balls remaining, Riddell finishing at 7-133. “I wasn’t out there for long and once I got one for six it got us going again,” Wadden said. “Matt Livingstone and I just hit the ball around to get the runs.”

Sunbury has avenged its early-season loss to Craigieburn in Bowls Victoria’s division 2, section 2, with a convincing win on Saturday. Sunbury won three of its rinks to defeat Craigieburn 103 (16) - 62 (2). On her return to the side after three weeks out to play for Australia, Carla Odgers won her rink 34-9. Mark Cowan’s rink won 27-26 and Brad Willoughby’s rink by 28-14. But Elise Cowan’s rink lost 22-14. The wins ensure Sunbury remains on top of the ladder, where it’s four points clear of West Coburg. Gisborne ‘gold’ in martial arts

Romsey’s Matthew Burkett issues a strident appeal for lbw against Hayden Ross. (Shawn Smits)

Riddell takes a tumble By Tara Murray Riddell’s unbeaten start to the season in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup has ended. Needing 183 against Romsey, Riddell pulled up well short of victory. Romsey’s bowlers did the job early on, putting Riddell on the back foot with the wickets of Michael Treweek and Brendan Alger. From 2-1, Riddell set about a recovery mission with five of the next six batsmen all

Gisborne’s mixed martial arts centre claimed eight national titles at the recent Australian championships in Melbourne. It was only the second time the club had competed at the Australian championships and the first time it had set a goal to win. Its eight golds, three silvers and three bronze medals surprised club members, and everyone across Australia, last month. It was the best Victorian result, coming after the centre’s 16 state titles. Connor Hall was the standout for Gisborne, winning three national titles and a bronze medal. He won the eightyears-and-under points sparring and traditional forms events, as well as the under-14 weapons demonstration. Arky Ventouras took out both advanced/black-level colts heavyweight full contact and points contact divisions, and won bronze in the points sparring. Brayden Cysani claimed gold in the 12-and-under points sparring for beginner to intermediate division, while Matt Campbell won the veterans’ freestyle sparring division and Daniel Beinet the 16-17 years beginner to intermediate level traditional forms event. Shakira Parker, in the under-10 female beginner to intermediate sparring and Henry Wilson in the colts’ advanced/ black division freestyle sparring, both won silver, just missing out on state titles. The seven medallists now join the Australian squad bound for Tokyo and the US next year. Tara Murray

Ashfield takes all before it in T20 competition Ashfield maintains its reputation as one of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s best T20 sides, winning its second district division premiership in three years. Having won 10 of its past 11 matches before Tuesday night’s fixture against Lancefield, Ashfield was favourite to add another title to its collection. Electing to bat, it made the most of the conditions on its home pitch with 7-149 off its 20 overs. Ashfield captain-coach Jason King said the side was starting to bat well at the right time of the competition. “We knew 149 was a really good score and

we made the same score in the semi-final – our biggest totals of the competition. “We were quietly confident we could get the win.” Craig Ballinger starred with the bat for Ashfield, making 60. It was the first time an Ashfield player had reached a half-century in the competition’s history. In reply, Lancefield managed 7-122, falling 28 short. “They had a partnership in the middle of the innings, but when we got two wickets in an over it turned the game our way,” Ballinger said. “We didn’t bowl them out, but we did all the right things.

“We protected the boundaries and continued to save runs, even when the game was over. “We didn’t take our foot off the pedal.” King said the club’s success in the T20 competition was about selecting the players who best suited the game style. “A lot of teams pick their firsts players, who may not be suited to T20s. We’ve brought in a lot of kids and asked a lot of them. “We have a group of about 15-16 T20 players, and there’s rivalry for spots. “Our emergency for the game [Ryan Pretty] came in, made 22 and took a couple of wickets.” King said it was the first time youngsters Michael Fox and Dylan Caruana had been

Ish to go swish for Jets By Tara Murray The Sunbury Jets have added some scoring power to their Big V squad for next season by signing American import Ish Sanders. Sanders will join the division 1 club’s push for a return to finals action. Sanders, who played basketball in Kosovo and Slovakia after finishing college, made a name for himself at Carson Newman College in Tennessee. During his four years at the college, Sanders proved to be one of the school’s best ever shooters. He scored 51 points in his first college game. He’s on the South Atlantic Conference’s top five all-time scorers’ list and remains on top of three-point shots-made lists for both college and conference. The 23-year-old isn’t just a gun shooter; he can be a handful in defence. In his final year at college, he led the league in steals, averaging two a game. After finishing college, Sanders tried out with Sioux Falls Skyforce in the NBA Development League. While he didn’t get selected for a team, he was selected in the training camp’s all-star game as one of the top 10 performers. Sanders comes to Sunbury having already formed a relationship with the Jets’ men’s coach, Andrew Summerville, who was previously an assistant coach at Carson Newman. “I’m really excited that Ish will be joining us this year,” Summerville said. “I’ve met him a few times over his college career on my visits to Tennessee and I’ve always loved the way he plays. “We have kept in touch over the years so it is great to finally reconnect with him on the court. “Having worked with his college coach, I know that Ish is not only a great basketball player but is also of exceptional character.” Sanders says he’s eager to continue his basketball career in Australia. Since playing in Europe earlier this year, he has been training every day and looking for an opportunity to ply his trade. “I’m thrilled to play for a great organisation and under a well-respected coach,” Sanders said. “I’m looking forward to being a part of this team in hopes of having a great season.” On top of his playing duties, Sanders will be involved with coaching in the association with the Aussie Hoops, Flight Path and sporting schools programs. He’s the second import the Jets have signed for next season, joining New Zealand’s Mitchell Newton at the club.

involved in a winning T20 grand final. He also paid tribute to Peter Taylor. “Peter has been around the club for 30 years and has always missed out on playing in the grand final.” The win pitched Ashfield into the Central Highlands Region Willow T20 Cup finals on January 25 and 26. It’s the first time the winner of the district division has been invited to the region finals. “The last few weeks have been amazing. “It’s a good place to be at the moment,” King said. Tara Murray

Lions scour the plains for fresh talent It will be a different line-up for the Sunbury Lions’ A-grade team in next year’s Ballarat Netball League. Lions’ netball co-ordinator, Leanne Burrows, says the club is going through a rebuild. One of the powerhouse teams of the competition, the Lions have played off in the past three A-grade grand finals. They lost this year’s grand final 49-42 to North Ballarat City. “A lot of girls have been playing VNL and with the seasons running at the same time next year a lot of coaches aren’t letting them play [local netball],” Burrows said. “We’ve got a couple of girls travelling and a couple more with VNL commitments who won’t be coming back.” Among those returning are Beck Anstey, Prue Stanley and Katelyn Begley. Two former Lions’ players, Pia Kynoch and Hope Evans, are rejoining the club. Evans, who has been playing with Romsey in the Riddell District Netball League, won the RDNL’s coaches’ player of the year and sharp-shooter award. “We’ve got a good base to build on, and we’re looking to get a couple of under-21 players in as well,” Burrows said. “We might get a couple of the VNL girls for the odd game, but that is depending on the commitments.” The Lions A-grade side is also currently without a coach after deciding not to reappoint Adam Boldiston. “He has been appointed Monash University Storm coach and, with that commitment, couldn’t commit to us for the whole season,” Burrows said. “Hopefully, he will be able to come back and coach the season after. “We are going to put our heads together after the first couple of weeks after Christmas and look into getting a coach then. “We are looking to build the team first,” she said. “We’ve got experienced players and older heads who can run training.” Meanwhile, the Lions want to also add some under-19 players to the club. “We will be lucky to get a side up at this stage,” Burrows said. “We are hoping to get a few players on board and, hopefully, get them to stay around for a few years.” In a boost for the club, former Lions’ A-grade premiership coach Kim Bailey is back at the club, helping coach the under-15s with Alyssa Egan. Bailey is also the ACU Sovereigns division 1 coach in the Victorian Netball League. Tara Murray 41 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ DECEMBER 15, 2015
