Firey makes a splash

(Shawn Smits)

In his first month as one of Sunbury’s newest Country Fire Authority recruits, Brennan Walsh has learned to expect the unexpected. The former army officer (pictured) started with Sunbury CFA on December 6 and hit the ground running. “The biggest jobs I’ve been to so far were an illegal burn in a backyard that got out of control during the fire ban and the New Year’s Eve fire in Sunbury that was sparked by fireworks,” Mr Walsh says. The aspect of the job he’s enjoyed most is interacting with people. “It’s much better and more enjoyable than the training,” he says. “You see people on their worst day and you get to help them through it. That’s the best part for me. “I served eight years in the army as a reconnaissance vehicle specialist; being a firefighter is very different to that.” Mr Walsh says the army’s camaraderie is very similar to that of the CFA’s, but now he’s “loving being able to help in the field all the time”. ‘Track firebugs with GPS’ The United Firefighters Union is pushing for anyone charged with arson to be fitted with GPS tracking devices. The call comes after Sunbury man, Stuart Dean Robson, 47, faced 13 charges in Melbourne Magistrates Court last week relating to fires lit in the area on December 25, 28 and 29. Police allege that Robson lit a Christmas Day fire that burned through 100 hectares of grassland, moving quickly as it was fanned by winds of more than 55kmh. Five fire-fighting aircraft and 65 Country Fire Authority vehicles were used to battle the blaze.

Robson’s charges include deliberately lighting bushfires that placed lives at risk, and arson. He was remanded in custody with his case due to return to court in March. The court heard last week that Robson was out on bail at the time the fires were lit. He was facing separate arson charges from October last year. United Firefighters Union secretary Peter Marshall is now urging authorities to fit all convicted arsonists and anyone charged with the offence with GPS ankle bracelets for around-the-clock monitoring. “Any mechanism that prevents them engaging in that activity can only be to the

“We’ll always be talking to Victoria Police about how we can improve ways of dealing with offenders.” Emergency management commissioner Craig Lapsley said arson was a mental health issue that needed a mixture of responses. “I believe that Victoria Police are doing the best they can with the powers they’ve got,” he said. In October last year a magistrate granted Robson bail on the condition he be fitted with an ankle bracelet, but present laws only allow tracking devices to be fitted once arsonists have been sentenced and convicted. There is only one arsonist in Victoria fitted with a bracelet.

community’s benefit,” he said. He said placing an ankle tracker on all people charged with arson would free up police surveillance resources. “GPS devices would allow the relevant authorities to identify the location of offenders and enable rapid intervention. “The community needs to be protected.” Emergency Services Minister Jane Garrett said the GPS tracking device was relatively new, and she expected courts and parole boards would increasingly put them on people convicted of arson. “There’s been double the number of people charged with arson in the past year,” she said.

Drugs, weapons fill cops’ dragnet By Esther Lauaki New Crime Statistics Agency data reveals possession of drugs and weapons, along with stalking offences, are on the rise in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges. Figures released last week for the year to September 30 show drug use and possession crimes shot up significantly, from 78 the previous year to 178, while stalking, harassment and threatening behaviour crimes doubled from 23 to 46. Thefts and the breaking of intervention orders continued as major drivers

of crime in the area, despite thefts declining from 627 to 535. Breaches of orders rose to 253 from 234. Total offences overall in the Macedon Ranges increased by 3.3 per cent to 2208 in a year, Macedon Ranges’ Inspector Ryan Irwin said. He said the figures showed drug policing operations were bearing fruit. ‘‘Although there has been a significant increase in drug crime, the data reflects some positive outcomes as a result of a focus on drug policing, particularly in Gisborne,’’ he said. “It’s the result of a lot of proactive work.

‘‘

Since the emergence of ice … there’s been a real - Ryan Irwin focus

’’

“Police are out there pulling cars over, checking them and finding this stuff. The other part is that, since the emergence of ice in the past couple of years, there’s been a real [drugs] focus.” Inspector Irwin said the force remained dedicated to policing family violence.

“In focusing on that, we do often see a rise in stalking and harassment charges, which might have contributed to a spike in those figures,’’ he said. Hume recorded a 49 per cent increase in weapons and explosives offences, from 577 to 860, making it the second highest in the state for weapons-related crime after Brimbank. Breaches of intervention orders jumped 22 per cent, from 1988 to 2429, and thefts continued to grow, rising from 5855 to 6215. Hume’s homicides fell by more than half, from 17 to six, in the year to last September 30.

Traffic police officers caught more than 170 speeding drivers in the Macedon Ranges in a 22-day holiday road policing blitz. Speeding was the most common offence detected during the statewide Operation Roadwise, which ran from December 13 to January 3. More than 7500 Victorian motorists were caught exceeding speed limits in the same period. A total of 13 drivers were caught drinkdriving in the Macedon Ranges. Of the drivers caught offending in the Macedon Ranges, 16 were disqualified or suspended drivers. Another 13 were unlicensed. Sergeant Geoff Neill, of the Macedon Ranges highway patrol, said he was hoping for a safer year ahead. “These figures don’t make us happy at all,” Sergeant Neill said. “It’s always disappointing to see people caring more about getting somewhere quickly then getting there at all. “We go down this path of education, but there’s only so much education you can give. It’s up to drivers to use this knowledge and slow down. “It staggers me that people don’t slow down, given the outcomes of speeding being serious injury or worse. I’m really looking towards a brighter year ahead and I have my fingers crossed for a safer new year.” Other offences in the Macedon Ranges included 21 unregistered vehicles, 12 uses of mobile phones and seven drivers disobeying signs or signals. Five vehicles were impounded and seven drivers caught not wearing seatbelts.

Macedon Ranges council will investigate options to upgrade the Kyneton water standpipe and eliminate the risk of thefts and vandalism at the site. Assets and operations director Dale Thornton said that while the standpipe was currently working, in recent times it had been subject to vandalism and theft from the coin meter. “The water standpipe is available for public use and, for many residents, it’s the only source of stock water during times of little or no rainfall,” he said. “It’s an important community asset and the council is looking at various options, such as a cashless access system, to discourage theft and help prevent damage to the standpipe.”

Hume council’s Enviro Champions program is bearing fruit at Sunbury with a sensory garden that helps in the therapy of people with cancer. Registrations are now open for Hume Council’s 2016 Enviro Champions program, which starts on February 24. Mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou said the efforts of Jim Wilson (pictured), a Sunbury volunteer, had shown how Enviro Champions could stimulate both environmental and health benefits. “Jim volunteers each week to nurture a produce garden, which helps in the therapy of people with cancer,” she said. “The garden … grows plants that stimulate the senses of people who have been unwell. Jim’s work is a terrific example of how a project that is good for the environment is also great for the mental and physical health of people.” Details: Liz, 9205 2845 or envirochampions@hume.vic.gov.au

Rock-solid management the goal By Esther Lauaki The state government wants better environmental and financial management in place at Victoria’s iconic Hanging Rock. A recent comprehensive review by the government of Macedon Ranges council’s management of the landmark volcanic formation identified key areas for improvement. Shortcomings identified related to the popular outdoor music and sports precinct’s governance, local community engagement and the need for clear strategic directions to identify

future investment needs for entertainment areas and the nature reserve. The government is proposing to strengthen Hanging Rock’s management procedures, offering greater financial transparency and more community consultation. Macedon Ranges council will retain the committee of management of Hanging Rock Reserve. Environment, Climate Change and Water Minister Lisa Neville endorsed the council’s ongoing management of the site and said there were a number of key recommendations to

ensure a sustainable long-term management plan for Hanging Rock was achieved. “Effective strategic change is necessary so that all parties can work together,” Ms Neville said. “We hope to work with the council and community to ensure the Hanging Rock precinct has a sustainable future.” The government proposes key changes that involve Macedon Ranges council working with the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) to expand the advisory committee and include greater environmental representation.

A new masterplan will also be developed for the precinct, including East Paddock, in consultation with nominated stakeholder groups, and the council will release annual reports to the DELWP detailing income and expenditure directly related to activities at Hanging Rock Reserve. The reports will be publicly available. Mayor Graham Hackett said he looked forward to seeing Hanging Rock continue to thrive as a tourist destination, a retreat for locals and a site of ecological and cultural significance.

Scanner most welcome Sunbury patients now have access to improved hospital services thanks to a new CT scanner installed last week at Kyneton District Health. From this month, local residents are being spared trips out of town for CT scans. Kyneton District Health chief executive Maree Cuddihy welcomed the expanded services for people across the Macedon Ranges. “It was important for KDH to collaborate with Lake Imaging to create space on site for this local service to local people,” she said. Lake Imaging western region clinical director Tony French said it was important to provide people in regional areas with highquality service. “This new CT scan machine at Kyneton hospital removes the need and expense associated with unwell people having to travel outside their community for medical imaging,” Dr French said. “A routine scan of the brain takes less than 10 seconds and produces

almost 1000 fine-detail images of the area. The images can be available on the same day for the referring doctor to review, which makes it a valuable service for local GPs and their patients.” Radiographer Grant Mutch, who has been taking X-rays at Kyneton hospital for nine years, said he was committed to providing access to quality medical services. The Siemens 16-Slice system installed at Kyneton is capable of performing CT examinations of the brain, sinus, spine, chest, extremity, abdomen and pelvis areas. Examinations not requiring injection of X-ray dye are performed daily between 9.30am and 5.30pm. Contrast examinations using dye in the blood are performed Tuesday and Thursday between 9.30am and noon. Information: www.kynetonhealth.org.au Esther Lauaki

Victims want church aid By Esther Lauaki A Sunbury advocate for victims of sexual abuse by clergy is calling on the local Catholic diocese and Salesian College to pitch in for more men’s counselling services in the area. Paul Levey, who was sexually assaulted by a priest based in Ballarat, has raised $11,000 to set up the Sunbury Men’s Survivors group, but he says this is not enough to sustain a service. Mr Levey said the Centre Against Sexual Abuse (CASA) outreach clinic at Sunbury was under immense pressure, with only one counsellor on staff. “You’re limited with the time you can see the counsellor in Sunbury because of the number of people he has to see. “There are a lot of people out there who are looking for help and need to speak with a professional, and they don‘t know where to go. “At the moment, you go in for a one-hour session and you might not be able to get another appointment for four weeks.” Mr Levey’s campaign comes after Salesian College principals, boarding masters and brothers, who were at the college from 1960 to 1990, faced Victorian courts on scores of sexual abuse charges last year. Mr Levey said the men’s survivors group would be offered upon referral from a doctor, with weekly sessions held in a safe and neutral environment. “I’m calling on the diocese and Salesian College to help support an extra counsellor in Sunbury because the money we have isn’t enough. “I don’t know where I’d be without the counselling I received and I know a lot of men out there need the same support.” The Victoria’s Royal Commission into Child Sexual Abuse started in 2013 and is ongoing.

Train times revamped Revised timetables are due out for V/Line train and bus services on the Bendigo line. Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong train lines and some V/Line bus routes start on new schedules from January 31. Bendigo will get an extra morning and evening peak service at 7am from Epsom to Melbourne, and at 4.02pm from Southern Cross Station to Bendigo. A number of services will be extended from Bendigo to Epsom and Eaglehawk as part of the first stage of the Bendigo Metro project, and all weekday trains between Bendigo and Melbourne will also now stop at Kangaroo Flat. The changes coincide with the opening of Bendigo’s new bus network. V/Line chief executive Theo Taifalos said a review had identified some schedule adjustments to help reduce delays, improve connections and accommodate stage one of Bendigo Metro Rail. “Rather than a complete overhaul of the V/Line network timetable, we have focused on making adjustments to address some ongoing challenges and recognise our rapid patronage growth.” Mr Taifalos said the changes would improve the spacing of Regional Rail Link services, and allow time at stations for customers to get on and off safely. Network punctuality figures in November were up to 89.2 per cent compared with 85.6 per cent in July. Details: www.vline.com.au

Medcraft slams expensive ‘farce’ By Esther Lauaki Hume council is believed to have spent $54,000 on the failed campaign to separate Sunbury from Hume. The money was spent on two inquiries and a special public meeting before the council decided not to support a stand-alone Sunbury council, according to Hume councillor Jack Medcraft. Sunbury’s split from Hume was voted for by ratepayers before the state

government overturned the decision last October. Cr Medcraft said the ratepayers had been ripped off. “The meeting I attended was totally politically motivated and an absolute farce,” he said. “Of the $54,000 spent, that special meeting cost $14,000. That was spent on cutlery, catering, staff and security. I think the money could have been better spent elsewhere. “There have been a number of public meetings and special meetings held that have been for the political gains of some people, not in the

interest of our community and ratepayers.” Cr Medcraft said he would think twice about attending a meeting of that nature again. “We, as a council, need to take a stand if we feel ratepayers’ money is being spent inappropriately.” Meanwhile, Western suburbs Liberal MP Bernie Finn, a Bulla resident, has asked the state government for answers on how much it spent on the separation. “Prior to the last election, the then Opposition committed to respecting the

views of the people of Sunbury and Hume, as expressed in a democratic vote, and implement the Coalition government’s decision to establish a stand-alone Sunbury council,” Mr Finn told Parliament. “After much procrastination, the minister came up with an audit committee, the result of which was a predetermined report the government used to break its promise. Putting aside the cost to the government’s integrity, how many taxpayer dollars were expended?” Mr Finn said he had had no response yet.

Melissa Hatty’s team of ‘night owls’ will be cramming in as many ‘zeds’ as they can in the lead-up to the Lancefield Relay for Life later this year. The team of 20 has been dubbed the Bristol Night Owls, after her husband’s home town in England, and they are training hard for the March 5 and 6 event at Lancefield Park. There, they will join more than 300 entrants to raise funds for the Cancer Council’s research, prevention, information and support services. Relay for Life recognises and celebrates Lancefield’s cancer survivors, patients and their carers. MY PLACE Sunbury accountant and business leader Michael Osborne is a keen golfer who has also completed the Kokoda Track and hiked to Mount Everest’s base camp. He talks with Matt Crossman.

How/why did you become involved in accounting? Why is simple; I grew up on a farm and did not want to earn a living as a farmer. After working in the robot importation and then legal field, Dan McMahon asked me to look after his accounting business for two weeks while he went on holidays. I am still here 25 years later. It is a great profession. How did your involvement with the business association come about? I have been part of the Sunbury Business Association for five years, the last four as president. I see one of our major roles as increasing the awareness of the diverse range of business and community groups that we have in the area. How would you describe Sunbury’s business community? We have a fantastic range of businesses in this area – whether they be shop front/ retail, home-based, professional services and trades. When you combine this with the amazing work done by the not-for-profit

and special needs groups, as well as the sporting organisations, what we get is a great community. What are some of the major changes you’ve seen in Sunbury over the years? What are some changes you’d like to see? Obviously, there has been a significant increase in our population, which has subsequently increased traffic in the area as well. This has put a lot of strain on our infrastructure, and we have therefore lost a lot of our country lifestyle. I believe a lot more thought and planning should be given to the issues of traffic and parking, as it is having a detrimental effect on the business and general community. You’ve completed Kokoda and made it to Mount Everest base camp in the past few years ‌ which gave you the greatest satisfaction? Kokoda had a lot more significance because of the Australian connection, and was quite difficult. I found Everest base camp more demanding, both physically and mentally, because of the altitude. Just very happy to finish both! What do you like to do in your spare time? I like my golf and quiet times while trekking, but with two of my three daughters now living out of home, any time spent with the extended family at home or up on the river waterskiing is cherished.

(Damjan Janevski)

NEWS

High antibiotic use at Sunbury A new study has revealed Sunbury residents are among the nation’s highest users of antibiotic medicines. The Australian Atlas of Healthcare Variation, the first comprehensive report on the way health care varies across the nation, found postcode 3429 had the highest antibiotic prescription rate in the state, with 62,472 prescriptions per 100,000 people in June 2013. The rate in the Macedon Ranges was significantly lower, at 33,408 prescriptions per 100,000 people. The report said Australia had high overall rates of antibiotic use compared to some countries, dispensing more than 30 million prescriptions in 2013-14. Melbourne Primary Care Network chief executive Associate Professor Chris Carter said the report’s findings would be useful in ongoing discussions with stakeholders from across Melbourne’s north and west. Associate Professor Carter said it was important that people feeling unwell didn’t go to the GP expecting antibiotics when these ‘‘may not be the best or appropriate treatment for their condition’’. ‘‘High community use increases the risk that bacteria will become resistant to these medicines, and they will cease to be effective against serious, life-threatening conditions,’’ the report stated. It called for primary health networks to investigate unwarranted variations. Matt Crossman

SPORT Woman boss kicks early goals By Tara Murray When Leanne Backwell first set foot inside the Lancefield Football Netball Club, it was to support her daughter, who wanted to play netball for the Tigers. She soon found herself taking on a much bigger role than that of supporting parent. “My daughter was 16 when she decided to play for Lancefield,” Backwell recalled last week. “I had to drive her to every match and, of course, she wanted to stay around and watch the other games. “At the end of the season, they said to me, ‘As you’re at every game, would you mind helping out’, and I said I would. “The next season they had my name next to ‘netball operations manager’ and that’s how it started.” Now in her sixth year at the club, Backwell has become the Tigers’ first female senior football and netball club president. It’s also believed she’s the first female senior club president in the league’s history. Backwell replaces Tony McKay, who held the role for three years. “I never really thought I’d be president of a football club,” Backwell said. “But I always thought I would use my skills in a variety of areas. “I’d been vice-president last year and been on the committee for five years and knew all the ropes. “The club needed someone to step up and replace Tony, who did a wonderful job. “The committee all knew I’d been active in getting the netball side of things back up and running, instead of being cellar dwellers. I was happy to step up and take on the role.” The reaction to her appointment has been positive, both within the club and the league. “It’s been hugely encouraging,” Backwell says. “The league suggested I apply for the AFL Goldfields ‘women in football’ grants program and I ended up receiving a scholarship. I’ll be putting that money into leadership and sports administration courses for myself. “I want to encourage other women to step up and get involved. I want to be a role model for other women to take on similar roles. I’m very pleased to be named president.” Backwell’s appointment wouldn’t come as a surprise to the many people aware of her roles on several sports and community committees. Backwell says her aim at the Tigers is to continue the hard work done in the past few years. She says the club’s culture and family feeling have to be continued.

Lancefield Football Netball Club’s new president, Leanne Backwell. (Shawn Smits)

“My mission is to make the club the best on and off the field,” she said. “Football and netball are equally important for me, and I believe all males and females are part of one playing group. “We want to get the under-18s [football] back up and running. “With football it’s about having local players of all ages and abilities wanting to play for Lancefield.

“People want to play netball for us; now we want that on the football side, too.” Lancefield has had no under-16s or under-18s football teams for the past two seasons. Backwell’s aim to have and under-18s team again is on track for the coming season. “We got a panel of local men, who have been fantastic in recent weeks to get players for the under-18s, and we currently have enough for a team,” she said.

“I can’t commend them enough for their work. “Hopefully, we’ll have under-16s running again, too.” The Tigers will be holding netball try-outs on January 28 and staging a fundraiser on February 16. Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Michelle Payne will head the guests for a ‘Bringing the cup to Lancefield’ dinner.

MCG looms for ‘little old Gisborne’

Tahir Afridi starred with bat and ball for Gisborne in the Cricket Victoria Regional Big Bash. (Shawn Smits)

Gisborne is one win away from a spot in the Cricket Victoria regional Big Bash final and an appearance on the MCG. The Dragons reached the conference finals of the statewide tournament with a win over Mildura Settlers in late December. If they win their conference final against either East Belmont or Doutta Stars on February 7, they will play in the overall final at the ‘G’ on Thursday, February 25. Dragons president Andrew Headberry said he had no idea about the extent of the competition when the club won the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s T20 title in 2014. Gisborne then went on to win the Central Highlands Region Willow T20 Cup, which qualified them for the 16-team state finals, which feature the T20 winners from each of Cricket Victoria’s regions. “It’s getting pretty exciting,” Headberry said. “It’s a funny sort of competition [with

18 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JANUARY 12, 2016

the timeframe] and we’re getting to the pointy end of it. “We didn’t even realise the competition existed when we won the GDCA T20 competition.” Headberry said Gisborne had exceeded expectations by winning its first two games of the competition. “We’ve played the best teams from big areas like Bendigo and Mildura, and to beat them is a great achievement considering the population of little old Gisborne,” he said. “Both teams were always going to be strong, but T20 is a funny game and as long as you play well on the day you’re a chance. “Against Bendigo it was a bit of individual brilliance from Tahir Afridi [with 72 not out] who got us over the line. “The Mildura game was over pretty quickly when we had them in trouble early and bowled them out cheaply [for 49].” Headberry said fielding was one area which

had stood out for Gisborne in both victories. He said travelling together to its matches had brought the team closer together. “Our fielding has been better than the other sides,” Headberry said. “Simon [Harman] is big on that as coach. “We also have a pretty young side so they can move around the field really well.” Headberry said anything was possible now, including taking out the event. “I can’t see any reason why we can’t win,” he said. “The standard of the competition is likely to increase, but we’ve given ourselves half a chance by getting this far. “We just need to put our best foot forward.” Meanwhile, the Dragons resumed their GDCA season with a win over ladder leader Diggers Rest Bulla on Saturday. Dragons stagger home

Hoops stars Sunbury-bound

By Tara Murray Gisborne’s finals hopes have been given a shot in the arm with victory over ladder leader Diggers Rest Bulla in Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup. Batting first, the Burras would have been disappointed with their 113 total. No batsman really got going and playing coach Kevin Barker top-scored with 23. Gisborne shared the wickets around, all five bowlers taking two apiece. Then it was the Dragons’ turn to struggle; they lost seven wickets before reaching the target. Eamon McKenna top-scored with 43 in a score of 7-114. Rhys Berry took three wickets for the Burras. It was one of three upsets for the round, with Sunbury and Sunbury United also knocking off higher-ranked opponents. Sunbury got its second win of the season by beating Woodend. Sunbury made 6-172 off its overs then bowled out Woodend for 150. With Saturday’s victory over Romsey, Sunbury United has won three of its past four matches. Romsey, which surprised several teams early in the season, struggled with the bat and was skittled for 94, skipper Chris Burkett top-scoring with 23. United, which was without skipper Jeremy Newman, didn’t miss a beat and former captain James Hughes took 3-12 in his first match since round one. Josh Smith also took three wickets. United made the runs easily, Adam Billinghurst scoring 61 of the 1-98 total. In the other match, Riddell beat Bacchus Marsh to return to the top of the ladder. Riddell chased down the Marsh’s 9-143 with five wickets to spare.

Australian basketball star Chris Goulding and former Australian Opal Jenni Screen will share their knowledge and experience with Sunbury basketballers. The two will be part of an all-star coaching panel for a two-day clinic to be run by the Sunbury Jets Basketball Association next Monday and Tuesday. Other panelists will include New Zealand women’s national coach and Jets women’s coach Kennedy Kereama, WNBL player Tegan Cunningham and former WNBL star Chelsea Burns. Jets operations manager Andrew Summerville said the clinic was open to all children, not just those who play within the association. Summerville said the reaction to Goulding’s involvement had been especially positive. “When we announced he was coming, 30 people signed up within an hour and a half,” he said. “He’s one of the most recognisable and popular players in the NBL.” Screen’s involvement is also big for the association and its focus on growing female participation in the game. “Besides someone like Lauren Jackson, you don’t have many more recognisable female basketballers in Australia,” Summerville said. “We want to give young females role models they can look up to.” For more details and bookings, visit www.sunburybasketball.com.au Tara Murray

New coach behind eight ball as club eyes three-peat New Romsey coach Andrew Bubb has a couple of busy weeks ahead as he prepares for the Riddell District Football League season. After being appointed just before Christmas, Bubb is at least a couple of months behind some other clubs in their planning. “It’s a great challenge and I’m looking forward to it,” Bubb said last week. “I’m a bit behind the eight ball with the late appointment. About half a dozen players have signed on and the next couple of weeks will be hard work seeing what everyone is doing.” So far, the only confirmed departure from the reigning premiers is captain Steve Burlak,

who has joined Rupertswood. Bubb isn’t a stranger to the Redbacks, having been assistant coach to Dean Helmers last season. Before that he was at Essendon District Football League club Keilor Park and the Ballarat league’s Melton. “I was Dean’s assistant last year and the next step was to take on the head role,” Bubb said. “I put my hand up early on, but the club was waiting until the AGM before making a decision. There’s a good core of senior players who are locals, and that appealed me.” Bubb, who moved to nearby Lancefield last year, said the growing number of junior players

coming through the ranks was also a big part of his decision to take on the role. Getting younger players into the side was a club focus last year. “We want to play the kids and give them the experience of senior football,” Bubb said. “We’re talking to a couple of kids who have left the club in the past couple of years to get them to come back.” Despite the club coming off two successive flags, Bubb says he doesn’t feel massive expectations to make it three. “There are some expectations, but at the same time there aren’t,” he said.

“After winning the past two years everyone wants to beat you, but there will be a lot of new kids in the side.” While the club has appointed a senior coach, they are still on the lookout for a reserves coach. Meanwhile, former Redbacks coach Helmers has joined Broadford for the coming season. The Kangaroos announced that Helmers would come on board as co-coach with Aaron Bray. Bray has coached the Kangaroos since 2013. Tara Murray

Rupo falls at the last By Tara Murray The top-of-the-table clash between St Anthonys and Rupertswood came down to the final ball on Saturday. Rupertswood, with captain-coach John Lane and Aaron Forward at the crease, needed two runs for a win or one for a draw in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association B-grade clash. No run or a wicket would see St Anthonys maintain its unbeaten start to the season. In the end, luck favoured St Anthonys, with Rupertswood all out for 165 in reply to 8-166. Lane said his batting partner, No.11 Forward – who has a double century at lower levels to his credit – was on strike. “He got bat on ball and we ran,” he said. “I was halfway down the wicket when the bowler let the ball go. It went straight to a fieldsman and it was a direct-hit run-out.” Lane, who top-scored with 35 not out, said both teams had chances to turn the game in

their favour. “We had a bit of luck go our way earlier on when they dropped a couple of simple catches,” he said. “We let them get too many runs with a few loose overs while bowling. “We also batted a bit slowly between the 10th and 20th overs.” St Anthonys’ win gives it a 14-point lead at the top of the ladder. Despite the loss, Rupertswood remains second. “It puts us back in the mix with other clubs,” Lane said. “St Anthonys has a very strong batting line-up and a solid bowling group. We play them again in a two-dayer. “Unless we get an outright win or they lose a couple of matches, which I can’t see happening, they will finish on top. It would be ideal to finish second and get that home final.” Lane said his side wasn’t far off being where it would like to be.

20 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JANUARY 12, 2016

“We only lost by one run today against the top side. “The top order needs to take the innings by the scruff of the neck a bit more. We need to put the bowling team under a bit more pressure. “We’re a bit of an older side and a bit more experienced, which will hopefully help come finals.” The coach said the development of Lachlan McLean had been pleasing. “Lachlan has come along with his cricket like you wouldn’t believe,” he said. “The aim was to bat him and me with the tail, but he’s too good to bat so low in the order. I’m batting him at six now but he could still move up to number five. “He’s put us in a winning position a number of times this season.” In other matches, Bacchus Marsh defeated East Sunbury, Wallan was too good for Lancefield, and Macedon shocked Ashfield.

A star-studded middle order could be the key to Centrals Highlands’ chances at this week’s under-18 Victorian state cricket championships. With an impressive mix of bowlers and allrounders to complement his batting line-up, coach Paull Jeffrey says he’s hoping to play in the finals. “We have a very strong middle order as well as a few spinners in the team,” he said. “We’re a good fielding team and I think we have the right combination with a number of allrounders as well.” Jeffrey said it would require all 13 players in the squad performing well to make finals, with the middle order being crucial. Captain Blake Thomson averaged 63 with the bat for Victoria Country late last year at the under-19 national championships, including a top score of 110. Gisborne junior Matthew Underwood captained Country at the championships and scored a ton himself. Those two, along with another Gisborne junior, Tom Rogers, are part of the Australian Cricket Pathway rookie squad. “Certainly, the big three are the ones we think will be the leaders, but cricket is a funny game,” Jeffrey said. “You can’t make runs every time. You have to rely on the whole 13 in the squad. How everyone plays will be the difference if we make finals or not.” Jeffrey said other players to watch included Romsey’s Matthew Milne, Bacchus Marsh’s Jack Lalor and North Ballarat’s Jakob Tidyman. “Matthew is a leg spinner who will be an X-factor,” he said. “There aren’t too many left-arm leg-spinners around. “Jack, a first-year player for us, has had a good lead-up with both bat and ball. Jakob played for us last year and we’re expecting another big tournament from him.” Jeffrey, in his 10th year as coach, said the team had been together since last October. “We’ve had a trial game and a couple of practice matches,” he said. “We had a hit-out against the under-16 team and we come into the competition in good form.” Predictions show that bad weather could again play a part in the team’s championship fate. Last year, the Highlanders had two games affected by rain. “This year it’s looking like it’ll be hot,” Jeffrey said. “There’s a heat policy that could come into effect later in the week. You need to make sure you win the first game … it helps set up the week.” Tara Murray
