Tourism failing demand ‘‘
People are no longer coming here just for the day - Judith Isherwood
’’
‘‘We’ve been here 15 years, but we’re definitely seeing new faces all the time,’’ she said. ‘‘It’s so accessible now with the freeways … with many people, they’re only just discovering our area. “There’s a bit of an exclusivity about it.’’ Ms Nixon said offerings such as Gisborne Peak’s state award-winning eco cottages were needed to ensure the Macedon Ranges didn’t miss out. ‘‘We need more beds on this side,’’ she said. ‘‘We have to get more quality accommodation and businesses and venues that are open seven days a week. ‘‘That’s a huge motivator for tourism.’’ The tourism board is putting the final touches to the second edition of its revamped visitor guide, which will be released next month.

Partnership gives gift of hope Sunbury residents who are battling long-term unemployment, mental illness or a disability, are being given a chance at a new life thanks to recruitment agency Ostara Australia and restaurateur Ami Tran. The partnership has not only benefited clients but also Ms Tran’s eatery, District 3429. “When you give people a chance, especially when they’ve been rejected so much, they actually appreciate the job more and will stay with you,” Ms Tran says. ■ Full story: page 8

Tourism experts say more accommodation options and sevenday operators are needed to ensure the Macedon Ranges reap the full benefits of a visitor boom. With annual figures released by Daylesford and Macedon Ranges Tourism revealing an 18.2 per cent increase in visitors in 2015, the tourism group’s general manager, Judith Isherwood, said there remained a shortage of beds on the eastern side of the region. ‘‘The Daylesford-Hepburn area is known statewide as one of the best offerings of good accommodation, but certainly further development on the Macedon Ranges side is going to help the region increase its reputation,’’ she said. ‘‘Similarly, weekends tend to be strong but having destinations open, whether it be shops or attractions, is also key to people coming and visiting outside of those peak times.’’ A total of 3.8 million people visited the tourism region in the 12 months to September last year. The number of nights spent in the area was 2.7 million, up 44 per cent on the previous year. ‘‘These are great figures for our tourism industry and for the region generally,’’ Ms Isherwood said. ‘‘We know that the economic contribution of tourism to this region is the second-highest of any tourism region in the state, so increasing visitor numbers coupled with increasing time spent in the region is good news for everyone.’’ Ms Isherwood said the majority
of visitors continued to come from Melbourne. ‘‘Our proximity makes us an attractive destination, but what we’re finding is that people are no longer coming here just for the day,’’ she said. ‘‘More and more, they’re spending time here.’’ Gisborne Peak Winery’s Barb Nixon said the area was attracting more people than ever before.

New heat plea for kids in cars Authorities have again pleaded with people not to leave children in parked cars, with new figures showing parents and carers continue to put kids at risk of heat-related injury or death. A month after revealing paramedics were called to 17 cases in the Sunbury area in the year to August 31, Ambulance Victoria last week said there were 225 callouts statewide in December – up from 161 the year before. Sunbury CFA duty officer Rick Flood said
that while he was unaware of any local incidents in the past few weeks, calls to rescue children in parked or locked cars were far too common. ‘‘Unfortunately, it’s a fairly regular occurrence, though often by the time we arrive the car has gone,’’ he said. Mr Flood said shopping centres continued to be hotspots. ‘‘Typically, the call comes from another shopper who has pulled up and seen a child or two unattended in the back seat,’’ he said.

‘‘Sometimes, it’s a case of parents accidentally locking the keys inside the car with a kid, so we arrive and there’s also a distressed mother.’’ Ambulance Victoria emergency management director Paul Holman said it was never a good idea to leave children in a parked car, even for a short time.
‘‘Young children can’t regulate their body temperature like we can,’’ he said. ‘‘That puts them at significant risk and being left in a car can quickly become life threatening.’’ Tests have found that the temperature inside a car can be 20 to 30 degrees hotter than outside. Temperatures inside a car on a 29 degree day can reach 44 degrees within 10 minutes and 60 degrees within 20 minutes. Last February, the Kyneton community rallied behind a local family after their 22-month-old boy was found dead in a parked car.
No slog, just a jog for special day
Christmas Day fire fight wins Sunbury praise
Hundreds of people will get their Australia Day off to a healthy start with free fun runs starting at Gisborne’s Sankey Reserve and Romsey’s Lions Park. They’re just two of the many events being held across the Macedon Ranges to mark the national day on Tuesday, January 26. Macedon Ranges Running Club spokesman Lindsay Sharpe is expecting up to 300 entries for the Gisborne run, which will wind through the town’s parklands. ‘‘It’s a great chance to get out there in the sunshine and enjoy some of the beauty that’s right on our doorstep,’’ he says. ‘‘It’s not a competitive event … there’s no timing. People can just run or walk, and bring the family.’’ The Romsey run will cover a five-kilometre trail to Lancefield. Registration for both runs is from 7.30am for an 8am start. Celebrations in Gisborne will include a flag pageant, music, games, a trivia quiz, and brunch from 9-11.30am at John Aitken Reserve. Community breakfasts will be held at Kyneton Mechanics Institute Reserve and Tylden Hall from 8am, while the council’s Australia Day awards and citizenship ceremony are at Kyneton town hall from 10.30am. Australian food and music will be part of celebrations at Malmsbury town hall from 11am-2pm. Woodend festivities include a parade and community barbecue at the RSL from 10.30am-3.30pm. Baynton residents can wrap up their public holiday with a film night under the stars from 6-10. There’ll also be free entry, family activities and giveaways at the municipality’s outdoor pools in Woodend and Lancefield. Details: www.mrsc.vic.gov.au/australiaday
Sunbury residents whose houses were threatened by a deliberately lit blaze on Christmas Day have gone out of their way to thank CFA volunteers. Firefighters were part way through a brigade meeting at Sunbury’s CFA headquarters last Monday night when residents of Settlers Way arrived to praise members for their quick response. ‘‘These residents shared details of their close encounter but also expressed comfort in knowing that, over the following days as trees reignited, seeing the flashing blue and red lights of CFA trucks … made them feel safe,’’ a post on Sunbury CFA’s official Facebook page says. ‘‘To these residents, you may think your expression of gratitude is insignificant, but it’s not. As you exited the room, it was quite evident that your words touched us all and we thank you for taking the time to come by.’’ Sunbury duty officer Rick Flood said the visit was appreciated by CFA staff. ‘‘[Firefighters] weren’t worried about missing Christmas Day lunch – they were just doing their jobs,” he said. “But it’s nice to be acknowledged.’’ Sunbury man Stuart Dean Robson, 47, this month faced 13 charges in Melbourne Magistrates Court relating to fires lit in the Sunbury area on December 25, 28 and 29. Police allege Robson lit the Christmas Day fire that burned through 100 hectares of grassland. Robson was remanded in custody with his case due to return to court in March.

Earthworks’ twin goals
‘Make asbestos removal easier’
By Matt Crossman Construction of a retention basin to protect Woodend from major flooding is expected to save ratepayers more than $100,000 because soil removed from the site will be used to cap Kyneton’s landfill tip. But the Quarry Road basin project, which began last week, has also upset some residents after more than 40 trees were felled. Macedon Ranges council assets and operations director Dale Thornton said the basin project had been timed to coincide with work at the tip, after tests confirmed the soil’s compatibility with the Kyneton site. More than 20,000 cubic metres of soil will be transported north to ensure Kyneton’s tip face meets Environment Protection Authority standards. Mr Thornton said planners had worked for two years to ensure the projects took place at the same time. ‘‘It’s a massive amount of earthworks; there’s probably 40-50,000 cubic metres of earth that need to be shifted around,’’ he said. ‘‘The open space that’s there will still be open space. The major trees that are there will be retained, but it’s going to look different. ‘‘It will have more of a dish look to it, with higher edges.’’ Mr Thornton said the basin was designed to protect Woodend from one in 10, 50 and 100-year floods. ‘‘We’re talking about significant flooding that involves some houses,’’ he said. ‘‘The last time it flooded was in the early 1990s when the supermarket was under 300 millimetres of water. ‘‘It hasn’t happened because of El Nino, but as sure as anything it will happen again one day. If we don’t do something, Woodend will cop it.’’
A Gisborne woman, who has been fighting mesothelioma for more than a decade, believes home renovators shouldn’t have to pay to have asbestos professionally removed and disposed. Under current laws, people who find the deadly building material in their homes face expensive removal and disposal costs. Lou Williams, despite her own ill health, has spent many years fighting on behalf of others battling lung cancer caused by asbestos exposure. She says disposal costs should be heavily subsidised. ‘‘Until that happens, we will have more and more people exposed, including their families,’’ Mrs Williams said. In 1985, her father, who worked in the building industry, was diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma. He died six months later, aged 54. In 2003, Mrs Williams, then 47, was diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma. In 2009, it became pleural mesothelioma. Large tumors were removed and she underwent chemotherapy before starting on a new drug early last year. While asbestos was completely outlawed in 2003, Mrs Williams said it continued to wreak a devastating toll. And those most at risk were the growing army of do-it-yourself renovators, she added. ‘‘All it takes is one speck.’’ The Asbestos Diseases Society of Australia said repairs and renovations could release millions of fibres.

The project has been a long time coming. It was recommended in a 1997 report that led to construction of a levee bank along Five Mile Creek. Mr Thornton said consultation last year drew questions, but most people understood the project was needed to protect Woodend. He said the trees being removed had either been deemed not significant or not indigenous.
‘‘Vegetation which is to remain in place will be protected through the appropriate measures,’’ Mr Thornton said. Woodend Landcare president Kate Daniel said the group wanted to work with the council to revegetate the site. The six-month project will also entail moving large numbers of trucks out of Quarry Road, through Woodend along High Street and Black Forest Drive.

A project aimed at wiping out a fast-spreading weed, which is inedible for livestock and dramatically increases fire risk, is making progress near Gisborne. But landholders in areas affected by serrated tussock are being reminded there is no room for complacency, with early detection and treatment vital to the protection of native grasses and agricultural returns. A Victorian Serrated Tussock Working Party (VSTWP) is halfway through the first stage of its work in an area south-east of the town. More than 130 landowners have sought expert advice since the project began in June last year, about 30 hectares of land has also been treated in that time. The project follows recent efforts near Riddells Creek.

VSTWP extension officer Ivan Carter said most infestations had been found near Gisborne and north of Sunbury. ‘‘If left untreated, these infestations have the potential to spread, and will rapidly decrease biodiversity in native grasslands and seriously reduce the agricultural capacity of properties,’’ he said. Serrated tussock is an introduced, self-pollinating plant, the seeds of which can be blown up to several kilometres. They can also be spread by water, mud, in hay and fodder. The Agriculture Department says dense infestations pose a serious fire hazard, with a burn intensity up to seven times higher than native grasses. Matt Crossman

Kyneton rides a property boom By Matt Crossman Location, value and access to essential services have driven a property boom that led to Kyneton recording regional Victoria’s largest capital growth over the past five years. New Real Estate Institute of Victoria data reveals the town’s median house price increased 39 per cent from $335,000 in September 2010 to $466,000 by September last year. House prices in Geelong went up 37 per cent in the same period to $577,500. Growth was

also strong in Benalla ($259,500) and Bendigo ($371,000), both up 33 per cent. Jan McColl, managing director of Kynetonbased McColl Property, said there had been a
lot of interest in property in the area, especially at the lower end of the market. ‘‘It certainly continues to be strong for the right properties,’’ she said. ‘‘Proximity to Melbourne, value for money, the availability of services and the fact Kyneton is on the train line all plays into it. ‘‘The comparison to Melbourne prices is also a factor, as is demand and supply … there’s not a lot of properties available.’’ Ms McColl said buyers were typically split between Melbourne home owners attracted
by lower house prices and those moving from other towns in the Macedon Ranges and country Victoria. She said it was difficult to predict if growth was set to continue, with uncertainty in some areas of the global economy. ‘‘But even with those figures, there’s been a bit of a dip and a revival in that time.’’ Ms McColl said the local market had been travelling well this summer, despite fewer houses being on the market.
Snapshots of history A temporary public art exhibition celebrating Sunbury’s past has been so popular that a local history group will push for it to be made a permanent fixture. About 30 photos and paintings showcasing old buildings and key milestones in Sunbury’s history were unveiled last month as part of a Hume council project that’s expected to continue until at least the end of this month. Sunbury Historical and Heritage Society president Peter Free said reaction had been so positive that the group wanted to work with the council to ensure people could continue to take a stroll through their town’s past. ‘‘A lot of the oldies have enjoyed it, but there’s also been a lot of new people who’ve gained an appreciation of Sunbury’s history,’’ he said. The exhibition, stretching from the south end of O’Shanassy Street to the north end of Evans Street, includes images and original paintings depicting long-lost buildings and special moments, such as the 1883 cricket match at
Rupertswood that led to the first presentation of the Ashes urn. The Sunbury pop festival of 1975 is also featured. City sustainability director Kelvin Walsh said the council was thrilled that people had enjoyed the exhibition. ‘‘There is no reason why the photos and paintings could not stay up longer, provided that the building owners are comfortable with that,’’ he said. Mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou said the exhibition, which winds through many laneways of the town centre, was a great way to get to know Sunbury better. ‘‘The images remind us of the deep history Sunbury enjoys.’’ Matt Crossman Hume mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou in front of a painting depicting the birth of the Ashes. Serving a greater good By Matt Crossman Great food, a desire to employ locals and a dash of social conscience have been a recipe for success for Sunbury restaurateur Ami Tran. When opening Vietnamese restaurant District 3429 in O’Shanassy Street late last year, Ms Tran sought to hire staff who lived in the area in a bid to create connection and help ease the area’s high unemployment. She also wanted to use her place as a business owner and employer to provide opportunities for people having trouble landing a job. That’s where recruitment agency Ostara Australia came in. The not-for-profit organisation works with employers and job seekers disadvantaged by mental illness or other disabilities. It found six people with the right background to help make the new restaurant a success. ‘‘Doing something to help others is really important to me,’’ Ms Tran said. ‘‘And it’s worked for the business, too.’’ She said employees hired through Ostara Australia had all made the most of the opportunity. ‘‘At my other restaurant in Moonee Ponds, I would hire people who came in with their resumes, but often I’d find they didn’t appreciate the job,’’ Ms Tran said. ‘‘Ostara’s clientele have had difficulty finding a job previously so, when they get that opportunity, you find they are very attentive, they are on time and they really grab it with both hands.’’ Ms Tran said her staff, some of whom have anxiety or depression, had been accommodated with few difficulties. ‘‘I always ask them what they’re comfortable with. Some of them are very shy. Some of them like to keep to themselves. So I get them to

work out the back where they can do their own thing in their own time, such as portioning or grating vegies or restocking the store room. ‘‘Others are energetic and bubbly, but can only be like that for a short time so I will have them out the front on a short shift.’’ Former photographer Georgia Edwards had been unemployed for nearly two years when District 3429 took her on.
She said her new life as a waitress had done wonders for her confidence. ‘‘Before this job, I was just wandering,’’ Ms Edwards said. ‘‘The support I receive here has changed everything.’’ Ms Tran said she hoped other business owners would consider hiring people who had been doing it tough.
Council cuts dilemma Hume council is facing a dilemma about what services and projects may need to be chopped from its next budget, after the state government passed legislation capping rate increases last month. The government will peg rate rises to the consumer price index (CPI) from this year, with increases beyond this needing a green light from the Essential Services Commission. In May last year, the council said it would lose $37 million over four years if rates were capped to the CPI. Hume mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou said the cutbacks to future revenue had the potential to impact infrastructure projects and services. “It’s going to be really difficult to decide what we can do without,” Cr Patsikatheodorou said. She said the council had not yet decided whether it would apply for a rate increase above the cap; it has until March 31 to do so. But Sunbury Residents Association president Bernie O’Farrell said the group’s members “wholeheartedly” supported capping rate increases and would be “violently” opposed to council raising rates above CPI. In a submission to the ESC last August, Hume council said it would seek an exemption from rate-capping measures for two years. The ESC last week said it had not yet received any applications from Hume.

Daly bushland secured Residents who have spent years fighting to protect Gisborne’s UL Daly Reserve say the future looks bright after Macedon Ranges council included the land in a public conservation zone. They say the move will finally ensure that the bush setting, close to dense housing, continues to help preserve the character and define the landscape of the rapidly expanding town. Cr Russell Mowatt, who successfully called for changes to a proposed planning scheme amendment at the last council meeting, said an officer’s recommendation for public park and recreation zoning was not in keeping with a 2012 resolution to protect the reserve. ‘‘UL Daly nature reserve is unique and must
be appropriately zoned to conservation on its own merits,’’ Cr Mowatt said. ‘‘The ambience of our town with the beautiful parklands … is something we should not take for granted.’’ Friends of Daly Reserve spokeswoman Amanda Gauci said recent conservation efforts undertaken by group members and the council were paying off. ‘‘The regeneration is starting to emerge,’’ she said. ‘‘We look forward to welcoming new members to share the joy and delights of conserving our reservation.’’

A friend in another municipality has told us that, when her land was rezoned to allow for subdivision, the consequence for her was that thereafter, she was rated on her land as if it had been subdivided, even though she had no plans to do so. In the end, she had to sell up and move because she could no longer afford to pay the rates. A developer bought her property, demolished her lovely hand-built house and garden, and threw up five blocks of flats. I wonder how many people in the Macedon Ranges realise that, if the town structure plans for Woodend, Riddells Creek and Kyneton are promulgated, this is what might happen to them. Margaret Boyd, Riddells Creek
Kangan closures … where’s Frank?
Under the former Napthine government, Victorian TAFE institutes were deliberately starved of funding to cause them to quietly go out of business. This was done in order to direct the public training funds to private registered training organisations. Almost daily we read about some of these private RTOs behaving dishonestly, gouging the taxpayers for millions and not delivering worthwhile training, and many
times no training at all. The Andrews’ government promised to restore publicly funded TAFE training and restore TAFEs as the appropriate supplier of trade and post secondary education. Yet clearly that promise was merely lip service, as the same mandarins at the education department who were undermining the TAFE sector under Napthine are still busy beavering away under Andrews. What is most shocking is that Kangan Institute is the only supplier of vital tertiary education in the disadvantaged northern suburbs of Melbourne, yet it is effectively being defunded and allowed to wither and die by direct government action. Where is the Labor MP Frank McGuire? And why isn’t he up in arms defending this vital service in his electorate? Or is his majority so large he doesn’t have to care? The closures at Kangan over the last few years because of funding cuts are staggering, and it is on course to effectively become defunct. This doesn’t bode well for the employment prospects of the young and many disadvantaged people it serves. Families and community leaders in Hume should be very angry. David Kemp, retired aviation instructor, Lancefield HAV A E YOUR SAY AV Star Weekly welcomes letters to the editor as well as comments and story tips on our websites and Facebook pages. MY PLACE Sunbury author Ruth Philbrick tells Matt Crossman she hopes her new collection of short stories will entertain and inspire older people. Never Too Late is your first book. How did you get involved in writing? I first dabbled in it about 25 years ago when I was recovering from my first bout of breast cancer, sort of as a creative outlet and a relaxation thing. This book is a bit of a celebration of good health after a more recent battle with cancer, and as I approach 70. How did the idea of a collection come about? Was it something that had been with you for a while? I just really enjoy short stories. It can be such a powerful way to share a message and inspire.
What would your advice be to someone who’s interested in writing, but isn’t sure they can take on a project like this? First of all, just do it. Allow your own thoughts to develop. Writing fiction, I get an idea and then come up with the main characters. Then, in my mind, I allow those characters to take me towards an ending.
(Damjan Janevski)
The stories try to provide answers to some fairly important questions regarding ageing, which of course can be a time of great change … Yes. I really want my fellow retirees to see there is a new world of opportunities out there, that they can take up new things like volunteering. In my own life, I used to be a baby cuddler at Sunshine hospital and now my husband, Robert, and I visit a nursing home. One of the stories in the book is about an old fellow’s dilemma when he can no longer play his pianola … it talks about the way he gives out to the community as a result of this dilemma. There’s also a few good love stories.
What do you like about living in Sunbury? It’s such a lovely environment, with the linear lakes and so on. Not only that, my husband and I have made some lovely friends in the five
years we’ve been here. We go to one of the local churches and we meet friends for a game of Scrabble once a week. It’s a great place.

Within an amble of Barringo Foodstore’s gourmet treats, the train station and primary schools, this modern house on about 1000 square metres in popular Chessy Park estate is beautifully presented, inside and out. Five bedrooms (main with twin walk-in wardrobes) and two sleek bathrooms make it great for a larger family or entertainers, while living zones of grey-carpeted lounge and family-meals rooms (floating floorboards) are big and light-filled. The kitchen has white vinyl-wrap cabinetry, extensive black benchtops, a dishwasher, wall oven and electric cooktop. A covered deck looks out to an immaculate backyard where a large Colorbond shed/workshop has easy access via side gates. Natural gas ducted heating, evaporative cooling, ceiling fans, alarm, light dimmers and an integrated double garage are other keynotes.
At the end of a tree-lined drive, this Mount Gambier limestone dwelling is on an elevated 3.04 hectares, taking in wonderful rural views. Parnda Ngunya borrows from Victoriana in its deep (painted) cornices and skirts, archway corbels, bay windows, period-style bathrooms and the era-saluting colour scheme. Generous living areas include a lounge room with fireplace, sitting and meals rooms with wood heaters, and a family room with fireplace. The kitchen sports marble benchtops, wooden cabinetry and the mod-cons. Of the three bedrooms, the huge main has study/retreat space, walk-in wardrobe and en suite. There’s also a study. Box-hedged walkways, a wisteria walk, a rotunda, vegie and berry patches, three watered paddocks, spring-fed dam, big Colorbond shed and integrated double garage are further drawcards.

through for horse float, holding yards and the potential for either more stables or feed storage. A second excellent colorbond shed with front sliding doors is perfect for machinery, car accommodation, workshop and more! An abundance of tank water, 5 dams and potential for a bore plus superb views add to the charm and value of this delightful country property. Just 5 minutes from Lancefield and 15-20 minutes’ drive to Kilmore, here is the ideal property to make your “country dream” a reality. An inspection will delight you!
I do hope that you had a lovely Christmas and a peaceful start to 2016. What an eventful time it has been and once again we extend our gratitude to the wonderful fire fighters who quickly and efficiently battled the deliberately lit fire in Sunbury which interrupted so many Christmas diners and threatened homes. Our thoughts go to the many whom were affected af by the fires near Lorne and of course, the dreadful fires in Western Australia. This is a country of extraordinary contrasts and as we have fires down here in the south, there are storms and floods in the far north! Financially, the world has “held its breath” as the Chinese Stock Market went into free fall. I do not understand stocks and shares, therefore I do not “dabble” on the stock market. One thing I do know is, that property is always a sound investment and in the areas of Romsey and Lancefield, the demand for rental properties well outstrip the supply – “food for thought” for 2016! To you all, I thank you for your continued support, it is

Kyneton aims for consistency
By Tara Murray Sunbury maintained its spot on top of the ladder with a convincing win over Glenroy in Bowls Victoria’s division 2 section 2 pennant. Despite missing two of its normal skippers, Sunbury won 95(18) – 57(0) over a side that’s looking for a finals spot. Brad Janner’s rink won 30-15; the Mark Cowan-led rink smashed their opposition 25-9; Deeon Dean’s rink won 19-15; and Brad Willoughby’s rink won 21-18. Sunbury’s Dave Glennon said it was a strength of the side this season that players could step up when needed. “The people who are deputising are doing the job well and making it hard to choose skippers. “Deeon’s rink came from behind, as did Brad Willoughby’s, after slow starts. “Carla Krizanic [nee Odgers] will be back this week and Elise Cowan the week after.” Glennon said that despite sitting on top of the ladder, the side had to keep on winning. Sunbury sits nine points clear of Fitzroy Victoria (2) and a further 10 points ahead of West Coburg. “We’re where we would like to be at the moment,” Glennon said. “It’s still pretty tight at the top of the ladder, with six games to go. “Having 18-0 wins like we did on the weekend comes in handy.” Sunbury will face bottom side Moonee Valley (2) this week. Meanwhile, Sunbury’s second side lost to Keilor (2), 88 (16) – 74(2).
Kyneton is looking for a second straight finals appearance in the Castlemaine and District Cricket Association’s A-reserve competition. But coach Dale Taylor knows everything has to go their way. Kyneton is fourth on the seven-team ladder where just one game separates third from last. “We’ve had mixed form to start the season, but we’re confident going into the second half,” Taylor said. He said making the finals last season had boosted his side’s confidence. “We made finals when we didn’t expect to. This year we’re on the cusp of playing them and I think most of the group has carried on the feeling from last season.” Taylor said the main factor determining whether his side made finals would be fielding. “Ultimately it will come down to that; it’s such an important aspect and can win or lose you a match. If we keep standards up to where they need to be it will play a massive role. In some games we’ve been fantastic; in others the standard dropped. We need to be more consistent.” Kyneton will resume its fight for a finals spot on day two against sixth-placed Muckleford at Mapson-Timmins Oval on Saturday. Kyneton made 173, Muckleford is 0-23.

SPORT STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
Highlanders gel well to advance to under-18s final After their first-up loss at the Victorian Bushrangers under-18 state championships, Central Highlands coach Paull Jeffrey reminded his player of some key points. He reinforced that things weren’t just going to happen and that the players had to refocus and play their roles. The advice seemed to work with the Highlanders winning the remainder of their matches last week to qualify for the state final at the MCG on February 7. For Jeffrey, it was encouraging to watch the side improve after every game. “If we hadn’t made the final, I thought this year would
have been a waste with the side that we had, especially the batting talent. “It was great to see them bounce back after the first match when we had our worst period with the bat. After that, they improved every game and were a really tight-knit group.” After losing to Metropolitan West, Highlanders beat Metropolitan Northern and Barwon in the group stage. They then needed a bit of luck in their quarter-final against Metropolitan Inner South East. Battling rain, it was up to the Highlanders’ last two batsmen, Mitchell Zakynthinos and Bailey Van De Heuvel, to get the job done.
“We had a bit of luck as I thought we were going to be washed out like last year,” Jeffrey said. “At this level, the last couple of batsmen normally bat in the middle order for their clubs. “Ours is an extremely strong batting line-up. Mitch had opened before so I was confident we could get the job done.” Batting first against Metropolitan Inner East, the Highlanders made 6-259 from their overs then restricted their opponent to 224. Jeffrey said every player had made a contribution in at least one game. Gisborne junior Tom Rogers was the
standout, averaging 66.7 at the top of the order. “But every player had opportunities and they took them,” Jeffrey said. “The bowlers really played well as a group. There wasn’t a standout with the ball; they backed each other.” Next month’s final will be the third time the Highlanders have reached the decider in Jeffrey’s 10 years as coach. They last won the title in 2013 when former under-19 Australian cricketers Matt Short and Pat McKenna were on the team. Tara Murray
Kyneton eyes still on the final four
East Sunbury is back on the winners’ list. (Shawn Smits)
Young bloods turn tide By Tara Murray With its finals hopes all but dead, East Sunbury decided to give some younger players a run. On Saturday, four of them made their debut in the first 11, thrown in the deep end against Wallan. As the match came down to the final over of the day, it was left up to two of the debutants, Patrick Penticoss and Jack Dillon, to get their side over the line. Wallan had made 6-161 off its overs; Thunder needed four for a tie and five for a win off those final six balls. Penticoss and Dillon held their nerve, guiding Thunder to 8-163 and the win. Thunder president Keith Osborne said the feeling around the club was amazing after what was just the side’s second win of the season. “We went back to the basics,” Osborne said.
“The way the season has panned out, we’re probably not going to make the finals so we decided to start playing the kids. “It was good to see what they could do against a quality line-up in Wallan.” Osborne was impressed with the efforts of Penticoss and Dillon, along with James Ellis and Jay Brockman. And he was also full of praise for Gary Williams (65), who anchored the Thunder’s innings. The win moves the Thunder off the bottom of the ladder, while keeping alive a small glimmer of hope for the final. “We’re still mathematically in the finals race, but we need things to go our way,” Osborne said. “We showed what we can achieve against Wallan and we came home strongly last year. The catch-up game with Macedon could decide the wooden spoon.”
22 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JANUARY 19, 2016
This is all a long way from last season’s efforts when the Thunder made the grand final. Osborne said that, despite the results, this season hadn’t been all negative. “It’s definitely been a tough year and a rebuilding year. “We lost several players to Greenvale and we’re not going to stop players seeking the opportunity to play on turf wickets.” One who the club has been missing is Jessy Carroll. The all-rounder was travelling overseas when he was diagnosed with stage four non-Hodgkins B cell lymphoma. “Losing Jessy has been one of the biggest losses in the club’s history,” Osborne said, “He’s been back at the club and helping out, which is a real boost for everyone. “It’s motivating to see him around. He was doing some bowling coaching with the young quicks this week, and they bowled really well on Saturday.”
With five rounds to go, the fight for the last berth in Centrals Highlands Bowls division 1 finals looks to be down to two teams. Gisborne, Kyneton Golf Gold and Lancefield appear to have secured spots, with Bacchus Marsh and Kyneton set to fight it out for the fourth. Bacchus Marsh remains in the box seat for that fourth spot after extending its points gap over Kyneton on Saturday. Kyneton suffered a 96(0)-64(0) loss to third-placed Lancefield with two of the four rinks very one-sided. Bacchus Marsh won comprehensively, 117(18)-69(0), over Woodend. The results put Bacchus Marsh 27 points clear of Kyneton. Kyneton president Margaret Breadsell says that, despite the deficit, finals remained the goal and the side’s ambitions for the season were undiminished. “Bacchus Marsh has some very good young players,” she said. “We’re hoping we can prevail and make the finals over them.” Kyneton’s task has been made harder with Australian representative Chloe Stewart having moved to Queensland. Stewart has made the move in the hope it will progress her bowls and chances of again representing her country. “We’re very sad to lose Chloe,” Breadsell said, adding she was unsure who would replace her as a skipper. Breadsell said the club wanted to get more people into the club in the hope it will be able to discover “the next Chloe Stewart”. “We’ve been trying to get into schools and get young people involved,” she said. “It’s hard to get young people organised … they’re looking for a more physical activity. “If they play barefoot bowls to start with it’s a way to get them interested.” In other results, Gisborne suffered its first loss of the season, losing a close match to Kyneton Golf Gold 96(15)-91(3). The result means Kyneton Golf Gold, the reigning premier, is only three points behind Gisborne on the ladder. Romsey defeated Kyneton Golf Blue 120(18)-68(0). Trentham, Gisborne, Kyneton and Macedon enjoyed wins in the second division. Tara Murray
STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
As close as it gets . . . By Tara Murray The intrigue continues to grow as finals approach in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup. In one of the closest seasons ever, no result should come as a surprise as every team could, mathematically, still make the finals. Third-placed Bacchus Marsh ensured it wouldn’t slip behind the pack with a win over Sunbury United at Clarke Oval on Saturday. Bacchus Marsh made 7-175 after being sent in then bowled out United for 169 with one ball left in the innings. Brett McDorman top-scored for United with 45. Leaders Riddell slipped down a place after only its second loss of the season, succumbing to Woodend by 80 runs. Woodend’s 2-208 came on the back of the Eastley brothers, Daniel making an unbeaten 84 and Josh 70. Riddell didn’t get close, being dismissed for 128, with Greg Matthews taking 4-22 for Woodend. Diggers Rest Bulla returned to the winners’ list with victory over Romsey. After restricting Romsey to 137 in its 40 overs, the Burras had to work hard to get the runs. They passed Romsey’s score with two wickets and four balls to spare, Lindon Dowsett top-scoring with 42. In the other match, Sunbury had its second straight win, comfortably, against Gisborne. Captain Jason McGann led the way with 45 in Sunbury’s 7-163. Gisborne was skittled for 111, with only captain-coach Simon Haman (45 not out) and Tahar Afridi (35) getting going with the bat.

In last week’s edition, it was published that Leanne Backwell was the first female senior Lancefield Football Netball club president. The information provided was incorrect – she is the second female president at the club. The first was Angelique Mott, who was instrumental at the Tigers in the early 2000s when the club came out of recess. Mott was president in 2004 when the Tigers won the Riddell District Football Netball League senior football and A-grade netball premierships.
Cricket
Clarkefield will be searching for early wickets on day two of its match against Aberfeldie St Johns in the North West Metropolitian Cricket Association Vic Kyte Shield. With the two sides equal on points and looking to finish fourth, a win is vital for both sides. Batting first, the Brumbies were all out for 141. In reply, St Johns was 2-78 at stumps.
Golf
Romsey golfers made the most of a relaxed day at the club’s guest day on Saturday. Playing Ambrose, players from Lancefield, Broadford, Kilmore, Horsham and Corowa were among those who took part. Jim Patton, Nick Patton and Pat Chisholm won 67/9.5/57.5 from Steve Poulton, Scott Williams and Bob Dwyer on 72/12.5/59.5.
