Free rego a winner for pet set Sunbury pet owners can register their new dogs or cats for free until February 19. Hume mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou (pictured with family pet Lisa) called on all those who recently provided homes to dog or cats to take advantage of the offer. “This is a terrific saving on a registration fee and we hope it encourages people to do the right thing and register their animal,” Cr Patsikatheodorou said. “It’s really important that owners register their dog or cat so that Hume council is able to return the pet if it escapes.” For further information on how to register a new pet with Hume council, visit www.hume.vic.gov.au or call 9205 2200.

‘‘Then there’s the scary side, from violent seizures and joint dislocation, to moments of full vocal and body paralysis where you lie there not knowing when or if you’ll make it out.’’ Describing the pain as relentless, she said ‘‘every night I go to sleep, I wonder if this is the night I won’t wake up’’. Mr Fitzgerald said the O’Sullivan family had been through a lot physically, emotionally and financially over the past 18 months. ‘‘It’s so shocking,’’ he said. ‘‘If people can just help me help them, that would be great.’’ To donate to the O’Sullivan family’s Ticked Off campaign, visit goo.gl/ lDZ2jN

Macedon Football Club is urging people to help a young woman battling the chronic late stage of a neurological condition known as Lyme disease. The Cats have got behind player Pat Fitzgerald’s campaign to raise money to send Amy O’Sullivan to Europe for treatment to help in her fight to recover. Lyme disease is an infection caused by a bacteria, which is transmitted by a tick bite, and can impact many bodily systems and organs. The chronic form of the disease attacks the central nervous system. Mr Fitzgerald, who used to share a house with Ms O’Sullivan’s brother Max, said he decided he had to do something after returning from overseas to find Ms O’Sullivan’s condition had deteriorated considerably. Expensive treatment had also failed to help. Mr Fitzgerald works as a masseur, and on the weekend he tackled a long line of footballers and supporters at clinics at Moonee Ponds and Macedon in a bid to raise $6000. With Ms O’Sullivan’s treatment costing about $1000 a day, the club is also planning a charity night to take the total to $30,000. ‘‘I guess everyone has the ability to help, but I’ve just chosen to do it,’’ Mr Fitzgerald said. ‘‘I felt it was important. I believe that if you can [help] then you probably should.’’ In a video on her Facebook page, Ms O’Sullivan said living through the chronic stage of the Lyme disease was hell. ‘‘Every day is a struggle. There is never a pain-free moment,’’ she said.

V/Line dismay gathers steam By Matt Crossman Bendigo line commuters are dismayed by revelations that the disruption of V/Line services is set to continue for weeks to come. Hundreds of trains were again cancelled last week due to ongoing problems including an escalated rate of wear on the wheels of VLocity carriages and the failure of a train to trigger boom gates. The crisis led to the resignation of the regional train operator’s chief executive, Theo Taifalos, last Thursday. But Woodend commuter Maxwell Winchester said V/Line’s problems obviously went much deeper.

‘‘While a lot of people are relieved to see the CEO go, the whole thing has clearly been managed in a poor way,’’ he said. ‘‘It should never have got to this point … there have to be a lot of other people involved who reported to that CEO.’’ Dr Winchester said that while a second week of free travel was ‘‘a nice gesture’’ the reality was that the free buses were being funded by taxpayers. ‘‘It’s a bit of a irony, really, because we are paying for it, too,’’ he said. He said commuters were sick of the blame game between the two major political parties. ‘‘People who are having their entire day

disrupted don’t care who’s at fault and what happened when,’’ Dr Winchester said. ‘‘We just want it fixed.’’ He reiterated the views of many Bendigo line commuters – that, until recently, V/Line’s services were first-class. ‘‘It’s really frustrating,’’ he said. ‘‘The buses still get you there, but a lot of people use that train trip as work time. You can’t do that on a bus.’’ On Thursday, Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said the continuing drama was unacceptable. ‘‘Last week, the government was told the problems had been identified and the vast

majority of services would be up and running by the end of the week,” she said. ‘‘This advice from V/Line was wrong … this unacceptable situation has caused the government to lose confidence in the leadership of V/Line. ‘‘V/Line passengers are furious – and so is the government. What has happened is not good enough.’’ V/Line now expects services on the Bendigo line to steadily improve from mid-February but it will be months before full services resume. Timetable changes scheduled for January 31 have been deferred. The government has also ordered a review of V/Line operations.

Patches of Paterson’s curse growing alongside the Calder Freeway are being controlled, VicRoads has claimed. Responding to concerns raised by motorists who noted purple flowers from Keilor Park Drive to the north of Gisborne, acting regional director Bryan Sherritt said VicRoads regularly inspected roadsides and conducted noxious weed eradication. ‘‘Our most recent inspections along the Calder Freeway revealed small and isolated traces of Paterson’s curse,’’ he said, adding that the highly invasive weed was often confused with other plants, such as vetch and lucerne, which also have purple flowers. ‘‘VicRoads works closely with the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources on a range of proactive initiatives for treating noxious weeds. ‘‘In late spring through to early summer last year, we conducted treatment programs targeting noxious weeds, including Paterson’s curse and St John’s wort, along the Calder.’’ Mr Sherritt said roadside maintenance contractors had to implement weed hygiene measures to reduce the spread of weeds such as Paterson’s curse and St John’s wort through contact with vehicles, machinery or as a result of operating procedures. Paterson’s curse flourishes in fertile dark clays and is a wildflower of the Mediterranean, but a weedy pest in Australia. It is a threat to livestock due to its poisonous flower.

‘One new school a year needed’ By Matt Crossman Hume council says it stands ready to help the state government build new education facilities, with 21 new schools needed to meet the demands of population growth over the next 20 years. Mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou said while the government’s commitment to a new school at Craigieburn was welcome, other suburbs, including Sunbury, Greenvale and Mickleham, would all need more primary and secondary education options in coming years.

‘‘Hume has provided data to the state government which demonstrates the demand for new schools in our community,’’ she said. ‘‘We want to work alongside government officials as they plan the schools that can educate our youngest residents in the decades ahead.’’ The number of primary school-age children in Hume is expected to increase 65 per cent by 2035. Secondary school enrolments are expected to rise by 51 per cent in that time. ‘‘This represents an extra 12,765 primary school-age children and an additional

8459 secondary school-age students,’’ Cr Patsikatheodorou said. ‘‘Our current state schools cannot cater for this massive growth. Now is the time for the state government to set money aside.’’ Sunbury Residents Association president Bernie O’Farrell welcomed the council’s push. ‘‘As we all know, this growth is only going to continue,’’ he said. ‘‘You’ve got all the new subdivisions along Vineyard Road and out towards Diggers Rest; there’s Sunbury Fields and more land at Racecourse Road …

“We’ve got to be proactive if we’re going to meet that need.’’ A spokesman for Education Minister James Merlino said future education needs were being addressed through a $730 million package to build new schools, upgrade existing buildings and buy land. ‘‘The government is delivering 17 new schools across Melbourne’s outer growth areas over the next few years alone, with more schools to be announced soon,’’ he said. ‘‘We will continue to work … to develop solutions for meeting current and future demand.’’

Call to crush or sell hoon cars By Matt Crossman and Esther Lauaki Anyone caught doing burnouts or engaging in hoon behaviour should have their car impounded and sold for charity or crushed, a Hume councillor believes. Speaking in the wake of a Western Ring Road crash that killed two people after an illegal street racing meet in Campbellfield early last Wednesday, Cr Jack Medcraft called on the state government to tighten hoon laws. ‘‘There’s places in Hume that are getting raided by hoons every Friday and Saturday night,’’ he said. ‘‘As a council we can’t do much about it. The government has to step in.’’

Cr Medcraft said there should be no mercy, even for first-time offenders. ‘‘They should have their car impounded and then either auctioned or crushed,’’ he said. ‘‘If you auction them off the money should go to charity, and that person should be restricted from buying a vehicle for another 12 months.’’ Cr Medcraft said the hoon problem in Hume had worsened. Hoon hotspots in Sunbury include roads around newer housing estates, while industrial areas in Tullamarine and Campbellfield are regularly taken over by illegal meets promoted through social media. A Tullamarine business owner recently emailed live commentary to the council

and police while holed up inside his office. I.H. Hunter director Lachlan Hunter said up to 100 cars were meeting in Lillee Crescent on an almost nightly basis. Cr Medcraft said that aside from the obvious risks to safety, hoon driving created a costly mess. ‘‘People need to understand their rates are also being chewed up by these idiots because

we have to go out and repair the roads,” he said. “The heat that’s generated by car tyres going around melts the tar. ‘‘At the end of the day, if you like your cars and doing this sort of stuff, go to Calder Park.’’ A police taskforce was set up in November to target street racing groups operating in northern and south-eastern suburbs. Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton said the increasingly organised nature of the groups meant police had to take a different approach instead of simply dispersing participants. A government spokesman did not respond by deadline.

Young chefs aim to rule Being creative under the eagle eyes of some of Australia’s culinary leaders is top of the menu for young Kyneton chef Harry Gibbs. The 18-year-old was one of just seven aspiring chefs from around Victoria selected for dairy giant Fonterra’s Proud to be a Chef program. A selection of 34 Australian apprentices will be mentored by executive pastry chefs and food service experts as part of this month’s event, with a $7500 international culinary placement up for grabs. Gibbs is four months off completing his apprenticeship at The Good Table in Castlemaine. He says winning the contest would give his career a major boost. ‘‘I would love to travel and work around the world,’’ he says. ‘‘America would be a good start – it has some pretty incredible restaurants.’’

The former Sacred Heart College student says he’s been interested in food for as long as he can remember. ‘‘For sure, it always interested me as a kid. ‘‘My mum always cooked really nice food, so I guess that drew me into it. Once I started, I couldn’t help myself.’’ Gibbs has tried his hand at all types of cuisine, but says cold meals, entrees and desserts are his favourites. ‘‘Where I am at the moment, we change our menu weekly so I get to come up with a lot of new things.’’ Matt Crossman Harry Gibbs is honing his skills in readiness for a national culinary cook-off. Gong for heart and soul

MPs give NBN the hurry-up

By Matt Crossman From coaching tennis to running the football club canteen, weeding the Neighbourhood House garden and baking slices for Anglican church fundraisers – whenever there’s been a job that’s needed doing in Lancefield, Loraine Kraus has been there. But while the citation for her Macedon Ranges citizen of the year award described her as the heart and soul of the town, Mrs Kraus insists she’s done nothing particularly special. Rather, she reckons she’s simply done whatever she could to help people in the place she’s called home for close to 50 years. ‘‘Anything that people ask me to do, I just do it,’’ she said. ‘‘I’ve never really batted an eye about it – I just do things and don’t expect to be recognised.’’ Mrs Kraus says her Australia Day award, presented at a ceremony at Kyneton Town Hall on Tuesday, came as a complete surprise. ‘‘I didn’t know anything about it [the award],’’ she says. ‘‘I’m not the kind of person who likes praise … I’d rather they just said, ‘Thanks Loraine’ and that was it. ‘‘Someone recently asked why I’m always helping and I didn’t really have an answer. A friend of mine said, ‘It’s because you’re very community minded’. I suppose that’s a good way to put it.’’ Mrs Kraus was a driving force behind Lancefield Tennis Club’s efforts to raise money for new lights and courts, and she’s keenly involved in the campaign for the restoration of the town’s Christ Church. It’s all part of community life, she says. ‘‘When you’ve got nice people working together, you can get some great things done.’’ Other Macedon Ranges winners announced

on Australia Day included young citizen of the year Sharina Mayman, 15. The Sacred Heart College student created a local bullying and mental health awareness campaign called Think About It. The community event of the year was Macedon Ranges Health’s annual colour run/ walk.

Kyneton theatre veteran Alan Stone was named arts ambassdor, while community achievement awards were presented to Riddells Creek mother, business owner and teacher’s aide Deb Mitrevics; to Mount Macedon dawn service stalwart Dr Frank Donovan; and to Woodend and District Heritage Society treasurer Rosemary Wilkinson.

Macedon Ranges residents and businesses continue to be held back by slow internet and poor mobile phone reception. That was the view expressed by Bendigo Labor MP Lisa Chesters and federal opposition communications spokesman Jason Clare during a tour of the electorate last week. Mr Clare met business owners at Woodend on Wednesday night, saying the federal government had failed voters, who had been promised high-speed national broadband by year’s end. While the NBN is available in Kyneton and parts of Woodend, Riddells Creek and Romsey, residents and business owners at Gisborne and Lancefield, among others, have been left to deal with old technology. Ms Chesters said she hears daily from people whose lives are being negatively affected. ‘‘Malcolm Turnbull promised that every home in Australia would have access to the NBN by the end of 2016. He has failed to deliver.’’ The latest NBN rollout plan schedules 2400 premises at Romsey and Lancefield, 1390 from Ashbourne to Woodend and 14,400 in Sunbury and Diggers Rest to have an NBN fibre-to-the-node connection by March this year. A further 3030 premises in Bulla, Gisborne and Riddells Creek will have fixed wireless connections by January 2017. Matt Crossman

MY PLACE Sunbury Agricultural Show president Tony McMahon was named the town’s citizen of the year during the Kiwanis Club’s annual Australia Day breakfast at the Village Green. The dairy industry veteran talks with Matt Crossman. What was the feeling when you found out you’d won the award? It was a real surprise. I was quite taken aback by it, really. They asked me to come along to the function and I thought that was a little strange. It’s not about me though … with these things you’re representing the people around you. The show is a perfect example of what volunteering is all about. There are so many people there who’ve been there for years, they know their stuff, they look after the same section each time … ultimately they love what they do. It’s a great thing for the community, and they get a lot out of it too. How old were you when you first became involved with the show?

What do you enjoy most about the role? I think it’s great to see the people involved getting satisfaction out of it. The way they stick at it, it’s a good indication that they are enjoying it. We’ve got a really great relationship with our volunteers and everybody involved on the committee. Everyone just works together and we work it all out as we go.

(Joe Mastroianni)

I competed when I was a kid. My father was an ex-president, my uncle was an ex-president and my grandfather was involved too. Over the years I watched them all do it and then I decided to give it a crack myself. I’ve been on the committee for about 22 years now. You’ve lived in Sunbury your whole life, what are some of the biggest changes you’ve seen in that time? Number one is the roads. That’s probably the biggest. The growth here has been huge. They only started doing subdivisions in the late 1950s … I was probably five or six when that

started. In those days, there were probably two or three builders in the whole town and, whenever a new house was going up, everybody would go and drive past to have a bit of a look at what was going on. What do you see as some of the challenges ahead as the population continues to grow?

Transport is a big one. We need more strategic carparking, so people can walk to where they want to go. We also need to seriously look at what we’re going to do with the railway crossing, because the station these days is probably in the wrong spot. If it was further up towards the Diggers Rest end of the town, the traffic would run freely and so would the trains.

Take care of your largest organ – skin Dr Belinda Welsh knows from first-hand experience a thing or two about dealing with a confidence-sapping skin condition. Having rosacea in the past, Dr Welsh says, gives her invaluable insight into how her patients may feel and is also partly what drove her choice to specialise in dermatology. “I really understand how a skin condition can seriously affect self-esteem and, in some cases, cause general wellbeing to take a big nosedive,” Dr Welsh says. “But when I saw that the right treatment, using a medical response, was so effective, it propelled me into the field so I could help others.”

then formulating a plan of attack to bring about optimum outcomes.” So what does the clinic provide? Skin, hair and nail disease treatments; skin cancer surgery; skin and mole checks; non-surgical sun damage treatment; laser treatment for hair removal, age spots, birthmarks and scars; ultraviolet light phototherapy for acne, psoriasis and eczema; and Botox™ injections for excessive sweating. Dr Welsh says the clinic has a cosmetics treatment menu, too, that includes Botox™, dermal fillers and skin peels, which are preceded by a thorough consultation and assessment.

Dr Cara MacDonald, a Fellow of the Australasian College of Dermatologists and senior consultant at St Vincent’s Hospital (as is Dr Welsh), adds considerable expertise to a team that comes with mile-long credentials. Another important team member is Mr Chris Bennett, plastic surgeon and skin cancer specialist.

“Our skincare product range – Rationale – is medical grade and the preferred cosmeceutical brand of Australian dermatologists and plastic surgeons. It’s been around for 20 years and is a product composed of skin-identical ingredients, which deliver a trademark luminosity. And it’s available for purchase at the clinic.”

The entire team, which also includes nurses and dermal therapists, is one that focuses on specific patient needs. “We’re patient listeners. Everyone has their own story, with differing needs and reactions to their problem. A first consultation is all about absorbing an understanding of a patient’s concerns,

Spanning about 35 squares – up top for everyday living zones and sleeping, and downstairs for all-ages retreat – this superbly maintained house (known as Eagleridge), with landscaped grounds of about 4.05 hectares, is a tempting parcel of quality. The lower level has its own entry foyer from the driveway and comprises rumpus, games, library rooms and a study, along with a storeroom and powder room. The elevated block allows continued driveway access to the top floor where a part-tiled, part-floorboarded living hub meets the kitchen. A Caesarstone waterfall island bench, lots of drawers, big walk-in pantry and all mod-cons equip the cooks’ domain. The large bedrooms, five in all, have walk-in wardrobes and swish en suites, and there’s a powder room up here. An orchard, gorgeous landscaping, a dam, paved terrace, deck, in-ground trampoline and double carport are extras. Magnificent views with the city just 45 minutes down the Calder.

Here’s a newly built place that salutes its historical milieu of Castlemaine by bringing a delightfully modern Victorian-era look to town. Very spacious, contemporary and built to exacting standards, the house has a décor that incorporates subtle fretwork, rosettes, deep skirts and cornices, and stained-glass, juxtaposed against an all-white palette and Tassy oak floorboards. Four big bedrooms include the main with walk-in wardrobe and a sleek en suite with tub. Along with a separate lounge room, there’s an expansive living hub that includes a kitchen with wooden benchtops, masses of cupboards, huge walk-in pantry and a full suite of shiny appliances. A deep verandah on three sides is a relaxation treat, and there’s side access for a van or boat and a detached double garage on the block of about 1006 square metres.

Within a hop, step and jump of the train station and main street shops, this western red cedar dwelling celebrates a rustic style, with cathedral ceilings, exposed beams, lots of timber and fireplaces. Four bedrooms in the main house include two with walk-in wardrobes, the main having direct access to a shared bathroom. Two more are upstairs in a charming loft style. The carpeted lounge room has a wood heater, while a family-meals area with a fireplace includes the kitchen with electric cooker. A rustic studio, which has two bedrooms, a living room with fireplace and a carport, is a great teen or guest retreat. Mature trees, lovely cottage-style gardens and a brick-paved circular driveway, along with sheds and barbecue area, are other drawcards on the block of about 2848 square metres. The house is now tenanted and shows a good return.

This farmhouse, with its appealing wraparound verandah, is on about 0.81 hectares near the highly regarded local primary school and within 10 minutes of Woodend. It would be perfect for families who like to have their entertainment at the back door, as it has a fenced in-ground pool with adjoining pavilion, a tennis court and gardens designed for strolls. The large main bedroom at one end has an en suite and it links with a lounge-dining room heated by a Nectre wood burner. The kitchen (exposed white trusses under a cathedral ceiling and slate floor tiles), is country-style with a wooden island bench, bespoke wooden cabinetry and Blanco and Bosch appliances. The second large living area (Nectre wood heater) leads to three more bedrooms and another bathroom. The massive laundry is lined with wooden cabinetry. Recently repainted, the appealing dwelling also has evaporative cooling to bring summer to heel.

“WE ARE AUSTRALIAN!” We have celebrated “Australia Day” in a variety of ways. The traditional “Aussie” BBQ of sausages in bread with a dash of tomato sauce is always popular but we also see more sophisticated BBQ’s, seafood spreads, a weekend away perhaps or a gathering of friends and family for a game of cricket. Australia Day leads to the question “who is an Australian?” The Indigenous people of this great land were the care takers for thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans. The tall ships appeared over the horizon bringing a “moterly” crowd indeed, convicts, adventurers, those seeking their fortunes in a strange and harsh environment. In the 1850’s the cry resounded “Gold!” And so began another influx of people seeking riches from our streams and below the ground. The first and second Wars brought refugees from War torn Europe and from England to settle in a country which offer of ed hope and peace. Our nation welcomed the Jews escaping the horrors of the Holocaust, the Italians, Greeks, Poles and more, all bringing with them a taste of their own cultures and religions and we happily embraced such delights such as pizza, baklava, pirogi. Now we see more and more escaping War from Afghanistan, Iraq, Sudan as well as those from South Africa and Europe seeking a better life. “Who is an Australian?” A difficult question in-deed but to me an Australian is the person who loves, respects and values this wonderful land, a person who abides by our laws and strives to build a better life for all. I hope you all enjoyed your “Australia Day” I also hope you all are “Proudly Australian.” • Column supplied by Liz Dormontt. Liz is a director of Chess Property Consultants, based in Romsey. SPORT United down but not out By Tara Murray Sunbury United soccer club is looking to forget the past two years. After narrowly avoiding relegation from state league 1 north-west in 2014, Sunbury wasn’t so lucky in 2015 and finished bottom of the ladder. New coach Rob Pianalto, who was assistant coach last season, said his focus would be on getting United back to the top division as soon as possible. He replaced Greg Czapnik, who left late last season, and before joining United had spent 13 years at Moreland City. “There’s a burning desire to get back up to division 1,” Pianalto said. “It left a sour taste in our mouths and we know we’re better than that.

“We’re doing everything we can to do it and we should be aspiring to the National Premier League.” Two weeks into the pre-season, Pianalto said things were getting started. “The attitude and ability are both good at the moment, but there’s still a lot of water to pass under the bridge,” he said. “Progress is slow and you have to take small steps. “We want to look at the bigger picture and not look back and we’ll work hard to recruit a few new players for certain positions.” Pianalto said United wanted to make the biggest improvements in attack. “We need to get it forward and create more scoring chances, while making sure our defence is solid,” he said. “We very much want to bring in some attacking players.

“We know who we want; it’s about trying to get them to the club.” Pianalto said the club was hoping to attract several players despite the perception that Sunbury was too far away. “The club has good facilities and we’re looking at developing good coaches so they can pass on the knowledge to the kids,” he said. “We’re very big on promoting juniors and giving them opportunities.” Despite dropping down a division, United has managed to keep most of its players. The biggest loss will be best and fairest winner Nathan Fox, who has moved up to the NPL. “You can never be disappointed with them trying to better themselves and reach their potential,” Pianalto said. “We’ve also had a couple of retirements.”

Sunbury juggernaut keeps rolling on Sunbury Bowling Club just keeps on winning in division 2, section 2 of Bowls Victoria. The ladder leader and perennial finalist sits nine points clear on top of the ladder with only four rounds remaining. But they were made to battle all the way before beating Broadmeadows 76 (14) - 69 (4) on Saturday. Elise Cowan won 23-16 on her return to the side after missing the previous two matches because of work commitments. Brad Willoughby won 22-16, Mark Cowan suffered a rare loss, losing 18-16, while Brad Janner’s rink lost 19-15. Sunbury’s Dave Glennon said it was good to get a win against a side which had traditionally provided close matches. He said the club was starting to turn its eye to finals and was working on who would be in each team. In what was seen as a surprise move, Carla Krizanic (nee Odgers) didn’t skip and instead was lead in Willoughby’s rink. Willoughby has been in great form since returning to the club full-time midway through the season. “Carla will be unavailable come finals because she will be playing in the Trans-Tasman event,” Glennon said. “She’ll be playing in the lead position for Australia, so we thought it was good to give her practice in that role. “It’s certainly a double-edge sword having a player of Carla’s calibre. “She’ll end up being available for more than half the season, which is a bonus, and so far the rink she’s been in hasn’t lost this year.” Krizanic will be available for the last four rounds of the regular season. Sunbury can further cement a top-two finish with victory over third-placed West Coburg this week. “It will be hard playing them on their carpet green,” Glennon said. “They’re tough to beat at home.” Meanwhile, Gisborne sits on top of the ladder in all three divisions in the Central Highlands Bowls Division. In division 1, Gisborne beat Romsey 91 (14)86 (4), Kyneton Golf Gold had a shock 100 (14)-92(4) loss to Bacchus Marsh, Woodend beat Kyneton 101 (13)-89 (5) and Lancefield smashed Kyneton Golf Blue 135 (17)-65 (1). The results mean Gisborne extends its lead over Kyneton Golf Gold at the top of the ladder to 13 points, with Lancefield a further three points behind. Tara Murray Brad Willoughby’s return has only strengthened Sunbury. (Shawn Smits)

New Zealand international Jess Bygate has signed with Sunbury Jets. (Supplied)

Jets snap up new players, re-sign stalwarts A New Zealand international is the first of several key signings announced by Sunbury Jets for their women’s basketball side. The Jets announced last week that Tall Ferns’ Olympic hopeful Jess Bygate would play for the division 1 side this year. The forward-centre said playing for her national coach, Kennedy Kereama, who is also the Jets’ women’s coach, was too good an offer to refuse. “It’s a no-brainer really,” Bygate said of playing for the Jets. “It’s a perfect opportunity to develop and grow as a player and I certainly want to help Kennedy, the team and the club take this program to the next level. “I’m looking forward to getting around the junior Jets program and getting our season under way.” Bygate, who last played for New Zealand in the Olympic qualifiers against Australia last year, has spent the summer playing in Australia’s premier women’s competition, the WNBL. Her first WNBL season has been with Adelaide Lightning, where she averages 3.2 points and 1.9 rebounds per game, including being in the starting five on several occasions. Kereama says Bygate, who has also attended college in America, will provide a real presence in the paint. “She will play a vital role with the women’s team this season,” he said. “Jess has a brilliant work ethic, is a skilled rebounder and defender, and has a solid balance of perimeter and post skills. “I think having a WNBL player and potential Olympian join our program is a huge boost for the club and community.” Bygate is the first new signing for what is expected to be a strong-looking Jets team this season. Meanwhile, several of last year’s squad have been re-signed. Leanne Urbon, Kayla Theodore and Genevieve McCorkell all return to the team, while there’s also to be a large focus on youth. Four members of last year’s Jets youth women’s division 2 grand final side – Naomi Stevens, Sarah Lampard, Sophie O’Brien and Alex Darby – will all play in the senior team. Tess Phelan, who played youth league with Keilor Thunder last season, also joins the Jets. Tara Murray

Brumby bowlers a blast By Tara Murray

Riddell chases bigger scores Riddell is looking to address its batting woes before Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup finals. As with late last year, Riddell is still doing enough to remain in the top two but has struggled to post scores and lost matches it shouldn’t have. Riddell captain-coach Heath Wadden said he spoke to his side about the issue before day one of the top-of-the-table match with Diggers Rest Bulla. “You need to make sure you are focused 100 per cent on every ball,” he said. “You can get a little stale during the season but you need to ramp it up for finals.” Despite only making 115, Riddell got the win over Diggers Rest Bulla. Only Burras captain Kevin Barker (18) made double figures in his side’s total of 72. Cameron Moran took four wickets for Riddell. Wadden had scans during the week on a knee injury that could require surgery. Riddell made 3-70 in its second innings, Daniel Fisk top-scoring with 36. Riddell’s catch-up match against Gisborne on Sunday was declared a draw because the rain during the past week meant the ground wasn’t ready. In other two-day matches, Woodend defeated Sunbury United, Sunbury and Bacchus Marsh drew, and Gisborne was too good for Romsey. Woodend got the points over Bacchus Marsh in the only catch-up match to go ahead.

Clarkefield Brumbies are in control after day one of their clash with Craigieburn in the North West Metropolitan Cricket Association’s Vic Kyte Shield. Needing a win to keep pressure on the top four, the fifth-placed Brumbies ensured they did what they needed with the ball. At 1-61, Craigieburn looked on track for a big score, but its middle order crumbled. Craigieburn quickly went from 3-84 to 8-95 and, but for a last-wicket partnership of 31, the score would have been worse than the eventual 145. Chris Vecchie starred with the ball for the Brumbies, taking 5-39 from 22.2 overs, which included seven maidens. David Falzon chipped in with 2-20 off his nine overs. The Brumbies then negotiated a tough 10 overs with the bat at the end of the day, with Thomas Balmer (11) and Cameron Main (four) guiding their team to 0-18 at stumps. With two rounds remaining after the match against Craigieburn, the Brumbies are six points – one win – behind fourth-placed Aberfeldie St Johns. A win this round is vital, with the Brumbies facing the second and third teams, Donnybrook and Royal Park Reds, in the final two matches of the season.

Gisborne scoops pools in Cricket Willow T20 finale It was a Gisborne and District Cricket Association double at the Cricket Willow Region T20 grand finals on Tuesday. It’s the first year that two teams from the association have competed in the two-tiered competition, with Riddell and Ashfield taking out the titles. Riddell, which played in the division 1 final a couple of years, ago, extracted revenge on Wendouree, which defeated it last time. Captain-coach Heath Wadden said the key to the victory was being able to bat out all 20 overs in a game that was played in front of a formidable crowd of friends and family. “We got off to a flyer, with Cameron Moran (35 runs) and Matt Darby (24) setting the

foundation,” Wadden said. “We lost three or four quick wickets in the middle order then looked to consolidate before attacking at the end of the innings.” Riddell made 9-145 before dismissing Wendouree for 130. “They had to go at seven runs an over,” Wadden said. “Matt Livingstone and Cameron bowled well to start the innings then Matt Darby came on to continue his form from the Saturday match.” Wadden himself took 3-19, breaking a stump in the process. Included in Riddell’s winning side were C-grade captain Heath Brown and G-grade skipper Cameron Barker.

Riddell now goes on to statewide finals, starting later this year. In the division 2 shield, Ashfield defeated Carngham. With about 30 supporters making the trip to Hepburn Springs, Ashfield had plenty of support for its debut in the competition. Captain-coach Jason King said it was a well-rounded batting performance that produced a score of 8-140. Ashfield then bowled Carngham out for 114, winning by 26 runs. “Youngsters Michael Fox (28 not out) and Nathan Anderson (20 runs) led the way, with everyone chipping in as we kept the scoreboard ticking over,” King said. “In reply, they lost two wickets in the first over thanks to Matt Bulluss, who opened the

Sunbury hits a ‘wall’ By Tara Murray Every run and wicket matters in Sunbury’s run home in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup. While its finals hopes are still alive, avoiding relegation is what Sunbury is focusing on. After nine rounds, the bottom four teams are separated by just five points, with the last-placed side facing relegation. Sunbury sits 10 points outside the top four after nine rounds. Club secretary Marty Kelders says this season’s new points format means results aren’t as simple as just winning or losing. “Every run and every wicket means something,” he said. “Certainly, no one wants to be relegated, but that’s the reality we face. We just have to win our matches, and you don’t know what will happen.” While it has found form in recent weeks, even stringing two wins together, Sunbury was a disappointment against Bacchus Marsh on Saturday. After losing half of day one due to a wet ground, Bacchus Marsh took the go-slow batting tack, making 112 off 96 overs and leaving Sunbury with 26 overs to better the total. Sunbury captain Jason McGann bowled 36 overs (for six wickets), while playing co-coach Heath Boffey bowled 32 overs. “Bacchus Marsh had the tactic of trying to bat the day out,” Kelders said afterwards. “It was very slow going. “We tried to force a result, and lost a few wickets along the way. We had the attitude that we wanted to win and, needing five runs an over, we gave it a shot.” Sunbury finished at 7-85, opener Justin Nelson top-scoring with 30. After back-to-back grand final appearances, the unavailability of players this season hit the team massively, Kelders said. “We know we can compete with the top sides if we can get all our players on the park. We keep trying to play positively and we’re hoping to have a full team in the last few weeks,” he said. Sunbury has three matches remaining: it plays Riddell and Woodend then a catch-up match against Romsey on February 14. All the other catch-up matches, except Sunbury vs Sunshine United, were played on Sunday. Sunbury and Sunshine United played a memorial match for James Wilson, who had played with both clubs but died after a car accident a year ago. “The preparations were under way and, when they announced the date of the catch-up round, we spoke to the league and Romsey about changing the date,” Kelders said. “It’s certainly a good cause, and it’s good to have a connection with another side and see how they do things.” United, fielding a nearly full team after its match was washed out on Saturday, defeated a young Sunbury side. bowling alongside Branden Paul, who’s been a star performer in T20s for the past few years. “Branden and Matt set it up for us with the ball and we held our catches, which makes a difference. “John Bebbington grabbed the last three wickets of the game to finish it off.” King said the side was thrilled to add another piece of silverware to the trophy cabinet. Ashfield will take on the Sunbury Kangaroos on February 21 for the annual Pink Stumps charity game, which raises money to combat breast cancer. Tara Murray

League bloods new players in rep competition The Riddell District Netball League is fielding a very different-looking rep side in the Central Highlands Regional VNL competition this season. Several players are representing the Riddell league for the first time as it looks to develop more players at a higher level. Coached by Rupertswood’s Di McCormack for a second straight year, the squad has five new players, Rupertswood duo Alex Maher and Jorgia Leonard, Diggers Rest pair Georgia Vicendese and Jayde Peters, and Lancefield’s Tamara Elshaar. They join the experienced Christine Harris, from Riddell, and Rupertswood’s Amy Starzer, Ailish McCormack, Emily Ktona and Jess Dominko. McCormack said that despite the new faces, she believed her team would still be competitive in the competition, which kicked off on Friday night. The RDNL has finished runner-up in the competition the past two years, losing to the Ballarat Netball League both times. “We’re giving others a chance to play and it’s a bit of a development year,” McCormack said. “We’re not as strong as last year but I think we’ll be competitive. It’s a very young side, but some of the girls have played together, which will help.” McCormack was thrilled to see some of the development of the likes of Vicendese in the past few weeks. The team has played two practice matches against the men’s under-23 state team, which McCormack also coaches. “Georgia has taken a lot on board and we’re seeing different things from her,” McCormack said. “She really wanted a spot in the team. We’ve changed a few little things with her stance and she has made huge inroads.” One disappointment is that Elshaar will miss the competition after surgery. “She’s a real loss for us,” McCormack said. “We’ll use the girls we have in the squad instead of bringing in a replacement. If we need to bring someone in, we’ll likely pick them from the under-19 squad.” Meanwhile, the under-15 and under-19 Highlands regional VNL competitions won’t go ahead because of lack of interest. AFL Goldfields netball manager Kim Bailey said the three Goldfields region leagues had entered teams but there was little support from the Ballarat area. “We had to tell the teams they weren’t going ahead because of a lack of support from the Ballarat associations,” she said. “There weren’t enough teams to make it viable.” Tara Murray 27 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 2, 2016
