Macedon Ranges residents are being encouraged to dig out old truck tyres, fence posts, rocks and antique hand tools for a community park project in Kyneton’s botanic gardens. Hardwood timber logs and pre-1970 caravans, tractors and utes are also being sought. Mayor Graham Hackett (pictured) says collections will be carefully chosen over the next few months, with donations accepted until May 2. ‘‘Having input from the community through the contribution of recycled materials … gives everybody an opportunity to get involved,’’ he says. ‘‘It instills a sense of pride in the space and creates a sense of ownership.’’ The park is scheduled to be completed by February next year. Sunbury community leaders hoping to develop an Australian-first smartphone app to connect ice users with mentors are calling on residents and businesses to help get the concept off the ground. A total of $60,000 is needed to take ‘‘Ice Breaker’’ from the prototype stage and put it in the hands of local people desperate to end the cycle of their drug use. Bruce Howard, proprietor of the Angry Butcher Bike Shop, said flow-on benefits of the Sunbury Community Health-supported project would quickly recoup costs. He said that if the app got 20 people off ice, it would have paid for itself. Not that the small group of business people,

health workers and police involved in the project are seeking to limit its spread in any way. ‘‘People always say if we can save one person it will be worth it,’’ Mr Howard said. ‘‘Well, that’s not my philosophy – I want this thing to save everybody.’’ The free app will provide information for ice users who have been apprehended or are keen to put a stop to their drug use. As well as detailing help available locally, the app will link users with approved mentors. ‘‘You don’t have to be Einstein to see what’s going on in the community,’’ Mr Howard said. ‘‘We’ve got a huge problem with ice. What we want is for people to be able to tap into information that can help them change.
‘‘My grand plan would be that every single police station in Australia could have a mentoring role.’’ The app will be completely anonymous, meaning users won’t have to fear apprehension. Its content will focus on hope – a theme close to Mr Howard’s heart. ‘‘Seven years ago I lost my wife to cancer and I was contemplating no longer being on the planet,’’ he said. ‘‘I’ve got three daughters I’ve raised … we always speak of hope. We want this app to show users that recovery from dependence is possible.’’ Sunbury Community Health community partnership and engagement officer Erin Callejan said the idea had great potential. Sunbury ambo wait times worsen By Matt Crossman New figures reveal that ambulance response times for emergency code one calls to Sunbury blew out from an average of 12 minutes and 51 seconds in the last quarter of 2014 to 14 minutes 27 seconds by the end of last year. Quarterly data released by Ambulance Victoria (AV) also shows that ambulances arrived within 15 minutes in 68.5 per cent of Sunbury cases – well below its 90 per cent target. Figures also showed the average waiting time
in the Gisborne area fell over the same period, from 13 minutes 25 seconds to 12 minutes 47 seconds. The opposition accused the state government of failing outer suburban and regional areas, but a spokeswoman for Ambulance Services Minister Jill Hennessy said Labor had taken major steps to repair a system that was in crisis before the last election. ‘‘We’ve invested $99 million to improve ambulance services, ended the industrial war on paramedics, appointed a new board to AV and ended hospital bypasses,’’ she said. ‘‘This

hard work and investment is beginning to turn the system around. We’ve seen improved response times for many of our regional cities … but we know we need to do more.’’ Opposition regional health spokeswoman Margaret Fitzherbert told Parliament the government had talked a lot but done little to
address ambulance arrival times. ‘‘Before the election, the ALP told us the ambulance system was in crisis. Well, if it was in crisis then what is it now?’’ she said, citing Sunbury as an example of towns where waiting times had lengthened considerably. Ms Hennessy’s spokeswoman said ‘‘four years of Liberal cuts and crisis’’ couldn’t be fixed overnight. ‘‘We’ve fast-tracked our $60 million response time rescue fund and we’re trialling new and innovative ways of delivering ambulance services to our regional communities,’’ she said.
Ranges green plan unveiled A 25 per cent greenhouse emissions reduction target is among the features included in Macedon Ranges council’s new draft environment strategy. The long-awaited plan, prepared following public consultation last year, will be released for comment on Tuesday. Mayor Graham Hackett said the strategy, which will guide policy development and decision making, was also aimed at improving catchment and resource management and biodiversity. “We want to lead the way with our response to climate change, which is why we’re aiming to reduce council’s emissions by 25 per cent,” he said. He said the strategy would build on the council’s environmental programs and support the great work already happening across the community to help create a better environmental future. The release of the strategy comes a few months after the Macedon Ranges Green Energy Coalition presented a 3500-signature petition urging the council to commit to becoming carbon neutral by 2020. The group, which pushed for a stand-alone climate change policy, also called on the council to install solar panels on all council buildings, at an estimated cost of $1 million. The council has previously said the coalition’s suggested timeframe was not feasible. Community feedback on the strategy, via written submissions or an online survey, can be made until March 24. The strategy is available at the council’s service centres or online at www.mrsc. vic.gov.au/yoursay.

Auction tactics ‘out of control’ By Matt Crossman Auction reform is needed to stop rogue agents from misleading potential buyers by underquoting houses by tens of thousands of dollars, former Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV) ethics committee chairman John Keating believes. The Woodend-based Keatings Real Estate director said underquoting was a problem across the state but a more serious issue in areas with a high concentration of auctions. ‘‘It started in the inner city areas about 20 years ago and, over the past 10, it’s got out of control,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s so prevalent now that the auction system is almost predicated on the fact that the agent is overquoting to the vendor in order to win the business, which is equally dishonest as underquoting, when the agents know the property is going to go for much higher than they’re quoting or they know the vendor wants much more.’’ Mr Keating said the deceptive practice was more than an inconvenience for potential buyers. ‘‘People get their hopes up, they get excited about the property, put time into the inspections and get their finance and legals in order and then find on the day they’re nowhere near,’’ he said. Mr Keating wants agents to be required to publish the vendor’s reserve price in all advertising for a property. ‘‘The property is then on the market for fair, open, transparent competition by the buyers,’’ he said. ‘‘What buyers want is maximum transparency.’’
While Mr Keating believes 30-40 per cent of agents support his proposal, they are not prepared to put it into practice for fear of missing out on listings. With the industry unlikely to self-regulate, Mr Keating is calling on both sides of politics to act.
‘‘
People get their hopes up … then find they’re - John Keating nowhere near
’’
‘‘They’ve simply got to address it as a consumer issue.’’ REIV chief executive Enzo Raimondo said the institute was undertaking ‘‘comprehensive consultation’’ with members to tackle underquoting. ‘‘We are committed to ensuring this issue… is addressed,’’ he said. While the state government wouldn’t be drawn on potential reforms, Consumer Affairs Minister Jane Garrett has directed 200 surprise auction inspections to crack down on underquoting. Eight major investigations, involving large and smaller real estate agencies, are under way, with the next 100 inspections to be conducted this autumn. ‘‘We’re cracking down on underquoting,’’ a government spokesman said. ‘‘Buying a house is one of the biggest decisions people make, and it’s heartbreaking when they are lured into properties they can’t afford.’’

Ways to smarter living Discovering, debating and delving into sustainable technologies and lifestyles will be the focus of a Macedon Ranges Sustainable Living Festival this weekend. The festa of sustainable living ideas will include a food and garden expo at the Woodend community garden and hub in Forest Street and a design and technology expo outside Woodend library, both from 10am-4pm on Saturday. A community picnic, including live music and old-fashioned games, will be at Woodend Children’s Park from 12.30-3pm on Sunday. Festival co-ordinator Alan Reid says this year’s event is aimed at building on a year of significant environmental achievements, including completion of the Woodend Community Solar Project. Energy and
Resources Minister Lily D’Ambrosio will unveil the 30kW solar energy plant at the Black Forest timber mill at 1pm on Saturday. ‘‘Another cause for celebration is progress on the community wind farm,’’ Mr Reid said. An anemometer, which measures wind speed, was installed on a 62-metre mast at the proposed site in a pine forest south of Woodend earlier this month. The technology expo will give people the chance to sit behind the wheel of a Tesla electric car and have questions answered by sustainability experts. Exhibitors in a community garden will cover permaculture, worms, beekeeping and vegetarian cooking. Combined entry to the Saturday expos costs $10; $5 children. Details: slf.mrsgonline.org.au

‘No one talks of Salesian abuse’ By Matt Crossman A Sunbury man who was abused as a child by a Ballarat diocese Catholic priest has urged people not to forget the survivors of the horrors that occurred at Salesian College. Paul Levey said while the spotlight of the ongoing Royal Commission into sex abuse had shone brightly on Ballarat, there was a feeling that Sunbury had been forgotten by some. “I’ve had guys come up to me and say, ‘Paul, what about Sunbury? No one is talking about Salesian’,” he said. A large number of Salesian College principals, boarding masters and brothers who were at the college between 1960 and 1990 have faced court on scores of sexual abuse charges. ‘‘I know of at least a dozen men locally who were abused there,’’ Mr Levey said. ‘‘That’s not including anyone who’s moved away or were boarders from other areas. ‘‘It’s a little bit disappointing. I’m 100 per cent behind Ballarat, but I would like to see our local community do more to support survivors.’’ Mr Levey is a key member of a group of Ballarat survivors who are crowdfunding a trip to be in Rome when Cardinal George Pell gives evidence to the Royal Commission this month. More than $150,000 was raised within a few days of the appeal being launched last week. ‘‘We know we’ve got a lot of support with family and things like that … but for the wider community to show this, it gives us a lot of heart,’’ Mr Levey said. The group will only go to Rome if they are
allowed to sit in the hearing with Cardinal Pell. But Mr Levey and his partner, Michelle, will fly out this week, regardless, after a donor paid for their flights and accommodation. ‘‘Whether I see Cardinal Pell or not, I’m going to tie ribbons all over the Vatican and make sure people know we’re there,’’ he said.
‘‘
I’m going to tie ribbons all over the Vatican [so] - Paul Levey people know
’’
‘‘Once Pell gives his evidence, whilst it will never end completely, it will bring major closure for a lot of people. ‘‘It will be another door to the past they can close. ‘‘When the priest went to jail for my offences, I thought that was it, but at that stage I was only 20. ‘‘I was doing drugs, I was drinking and the world just went past. Now I’ve got rid of all that – this will be it for me.’’ As reported by Star Weekly in January, Mr Levey has called on the local Catholic diocese and Salesian College to pitch in for more men’s counselling services in the area. More than $11,000 has been raised to set up the Sunbury Men’s Survivors group, but more is needed to sustain a service. Mr Levey said the Centre Against Sexual Abuse (CASA) outreach clinic was under immense pressure, with only one counsellor on staff.

Paddock to plate fiesta The toast of Kyneton’s thriving foodie scene will lay out a massive spread of signature dishes at Sunday’s Taste of Kyneton festival. This year’s event at Kyneton racecourse will also celebrate central Victoria’s “ethical farm movement”, with rare-breed pork, local olives, nuts and farm-made cordial set to feature. The festival will also showcase the many and diverse offerings of Piper Street and beyond. Among first-time exhibitors is Kate’s Kitchen of Kyneton, which opened in mid-2015. Owner Kate Tripodi will offer scones, gluten-free cupcakes and high tea in a box. ‘‘I think people know Kyneton as a foodie place, but they are often surprised once you
sit them down in one place like this and they see how much there is on offer. You can go fine dining or get scones … there’s even some cafes that are like you’ve stumbled into Richmond. ‘‘We’ve got such a diversity that even locals are spoilt for choice. You could never get bored here.’’ Taste of Kyneton is at Kyneton racecourse from 11am until 3pm this Sunday. Local beers and ciders will also be available. Entry is $10, with proceeds supporting Kyneton CFA and RM Begg Aged Care. More details: www.tasteofkyneton.com Matt Crossman

Hume council has welcomed the release of an infrastructure priority list that says it is important to preserve land for the long-mooted Outer Metropolitan Ring Road. Mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou said the proposed freeway would ease traffic on congested thoroughfares including Sunbury, Craigieburn, Mickleham and Somerton roads. “Council stands ready to support the Victorian and Australian governments as agencies plan for this essential arterial,” she said.

Wait, then late, for commuters Bendigo-line train commuters fed up with being late for work and missing family dinners have called for more to be done to fix the woes that have plagued V/Line services since the start of the year. Kyneton’s Angela Sloan has supported Opposition Leader Matthew Guy’s plea for an ‘‘around the clock’’ plan to get train services back on track. Ms Sloan, who works in Melbourne’s CBD, said the public transport crisis had been a major disruption to the lives of thousands of people. Not only has she been late for work many times since buses started replacing trains, she’s also faced the extra worry of not knowing if she’ll be home in time to put her daughter to bed. Time normally dedicated to working on the commute has also been lost due to the confined spaces of bus travel. Additional traffic caused by the end of school holidays and roadworks on CityLink have added to the frustration. ‘‘I’ve been late for work regularly since this started,’’ Ms Sloan said. ‘‘The other morning I caught the 7.20am bus from Kyneton and didn’t get to work until 9.30am. The train normally takes an hour and 15 minutes.’’ As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, Bendigo-line punctuality plummeted from 83 per cent in December to just 64 per cent in January. The latest figures come amid a crisis that led to the resignation of V/Line chief executive Theo Taifalos, with thousands of services cancelled
due to ongoing problems including an escalated rate of wear on the wheels of VLocity carriages and the failure of trains to trigger boom gates. While replacement buses running express to Melbourne can sometimes be quicker, there are often long delays because drivers are unable to leave until a bus is full. Passengers have also had to deal with drivers getting lost down side streets.
‘‘
For god’s sake … solve the situation and get on - Matthew Guy with it
’’
Ms Sloan recently had to use her phone to help a driver who had taken a wrong turn but had no GPS to find his way. ‘‘It took more than two hours that day,’’ she said. ‘‘This is the kind of thing that’s going on. We’ve all had enough.’’ Mr Guy, who visited Kyneton railway station last Tuesday to discuss the government’s handling of the crisis, said Transport Minister Jacinta Allan had to put more pressure on V/Line. “If there is a major wheel-wear issue … then for god’s sake have a 24-hour effort to solve the situation and get on with it,’’ he said. ‘‘Stop working on a nine-to-five basis to try and solve what is the biggest transport crisis of V/Line’s history. I can’t understand how this is going to take seven months.” Mr Guy also called for replacement bus services to be more reliable.

Plum job for school kids Sunbury’s Killara Primary School pupils – including Phoenix, Patrick and Jessica (pictured) – are becoming young orchardists after a single plum tree was used as the catalyst for an orchard. After the school received a tree under the Healthy Living Hume program in 2014, Sunbury Community Health offered to match any other fruit trees the school could source. Bunnings Sunbury also got on board, donating six trees, meaning the school’s pupils were on their way getting their hands dirty in a 13-tree orchard. Trees were planted, staked and guarded, and a series of working bees involving parents, pupils and other volunteers ensured the orchard area was properly mulched. A native bee hotel was added to help with pollination. Pupils continue to look after the trees and are looking forward to enjoying fruit when the trees mature.

What weed is that?
Landowners can learn more about the differences between noxious, environmental and agricultural weeds thanks to a new booklet produced by Macedon Ranges council. The free guide, which catalogues more than 60 types of local weed, provides details on different control techniques. The council’s environment department will also run a free workshop in Newham, from 10am until 1pm, on March 5. Details: 5421 9660
By Matt Crossman A digital hub for government workers who live in the area is among ideas being explored by a group behind a community campaign aimed at buying back the old Kyneton hospital from developers. SaveOKH campaigners will meet with state government representatives in coming weeks to gauge interest in plans for a mixeduse development at the historic Wedge Street site, which has been earmarked for luxury apartments as part of a major 65-lot redevelopment. Almost 300 people turned out on Valentine’s Day to show some love for the historic bluestone building, which was completed in 1910. SaveOKH spokeswoman Christine Lauder said the group had been blown away by the Sunday turnout, even given the buzz generated by a vibrant social media campaign featuring SBS newsreader Lee Lin Chin. ‘‘When you instigate an event like this, you wonder whether you’ll get 10 or 20 people,’’ Ms Lauder said. ‘‘But to get in the region of 300 really shows people’s love of the old hospital.’’ Participants were encouraged to share their thoughts on potential uses for the old hospital. Many shared their personal stories with volunteers and via social media, while others signed up to volunteer or flagged financial support. Ms Lauder said the level of support proved the community didn’t want the Hong Kong-based developer to turn the site into another housing development. The developer has previously told SaveOKH representatives he is prepared to sell back the entire site for $8 million or the hospital building for $1.8 million. ‘‘It is now abundantly clear there is a strong

community will to see this landmark building saved from suburban housing,’’ Ms Lauder said. ‘‘SaveOKH believes the building can also be an economic and tourist asset to Kyneton.’’ Ms Lauder said support had come from a wide cross-section of the community. ‘‘It isn’t one group … it’s a diverse representation from locals who have lived here all their lives to people who have specifically chosen Kyneton as their home.’’ SaveOKH will meet Regional Development Victoria representatives this week, and is
seeking briefings with state MPs and agencies. ‘‘We want to see if there is an appetite and an ability to support a mixed-use development at the site,’’ Ms Lauder said. ‘‘We have some ideas for a mixed-use project … including an art gallery, digital hub, boutique hotel, gardens and scaled-down residential.’’ Next on the to-do list for SaveOKH is a formal project plan to present to businesses and philanthropists, grant proposals and a possible crowdfunding campaign. Young people wanting their voices heard are being encouraged to apply for the 2016 Youth Parliament program. Sunbury state MP Josh Bull said it was a good opportunity for teens to develop leadership skills and help shape real legislation. NEWS
MY PLACE SunFest fun run co-ordinator Natalie Harrison tells Matt Crossman that the 40th year of the festival, held over three days on the Village Green next month, will be the biggest yet.
I moved to Sunbury 16 years ago. I attended my first SunFest just a few years ago. My son’s birthday had always been on the same weekend. I remember standing on the Village Green on the Saturday morning with my two children thinking wow, how awesome it was being part of a great community event. The number of people, stallholders, rides … it was a fantastic atmosphere. How did you become involved? There was an advertisement in the local paper for a volunteer to be the walk-run co-ordinator. I had no previous experience in organising an event, but loved running. I’d run marathons and other running events but wanted to have an opportunity to get involved organising one. The fact that SunFest is a community event run by volunteers, who have families, work, have children, at university etc., also attracted me. It’s a great opportunity to get to know others. What do you consider to be the festival highlights? This year SunFest will be celebrating its 40th anniversary. It’s a great achievement for what is Sunbury’s largest event and the largest community-run event in Victoria, attracting about 30,000 people over the weekend. This year’s SunFest will be held over three days (March 18-20). There’ll be carnival rides, talent shows, a battle of the school choirs, grand street
parade, fireworks, SunFest under the Stars, including No Vacancy on stage Saturday night, the walk-run for fun on Sunday, and Pets on the Green. There’s so much for all ages. Can you tell us more about the fun run? This will be the sixth year we’ve run the walk-run for fun. It’s on the Sunday, starting from Barkly Street next to Memorial Hall. The first event, which is 21km, kicks off at 7.45am. Other events include a 10km run, 5km walk-run and 2km run for kids. All events except for the kids are timed, and all entrants receive a finisher’s medallion. Trophies will be presented to the top three placegetters and fastest group in the five, 10 and 21km events. We are encouraging participants to dress up and there will be a prize for best dressed group or individual. All money raised is equally divided between our chosen charities. This year we are proudly supporting beyondblue, the Rotary Club of Sunbury Family Community Kitchen and Hume Men’s Shed (Sunbury). How many walk-run entrants are you expecting this year? We’re hoping for 300-plus. We are encouraging people to get behind this event and support the three charities. The great thing is you don’t have to be an athlete to compete. Just come, participate and have fun. Families, community groups, fitness clubs, sporting groups and schools can all get involved.
(Shawn Smits)

Spanning 42 squares (under roofline), this sophisticated abode is a good example of clever design, stylish décor and unstinting space. Three separate living zones (each with bamboo floorboards) include a theatre room with projector, AV wiring and gas log fire; an extra-big family-meals space; and a games room/children’s retreat. The glam, all-white kitchen has a load of streamlined soft-close storage, a huge pantry (with second dishwasher), Caesarstone benches and Miele induction cooktop and pyrolytic oven. The main bedroom has a dressing room and a chic en suite with walk-in shower and heated towel rail. There’s also a study. Hydronic heating, split-system, double glazing, monitored alarm, 45,000-litre water tank, town water and gas, a dog run, triple garage and a block of about 7885 square metres are fine finishers. Another sweetener? There’s a planning permit for an indoor pool and covered entertainment area.
This property of about 5.05 hectares offers fine rural living with the lovely Macedon Ranges as a backdrop. The house has a large, separate lounge room, and a tiled family-meals zone (with wood heater), where the kitchen has plentiful timber cupboards, an electric cooktop and underbench oven. All four bedrooms have built-in wardrobes, while the main also has an en suite. An inverter split-system helps tame the climate, and there’s a ducted vacuum, along with solar power. There are paddocks at the back suitable for horses or other stock, and a vast shed with a kitchen is set up for parties. Two more big sheds include one with rear access for stock. A rock-edged ornamental dam with a jetty, a barbecue area, a glasshouse and an abundance of fruit trees are bonuses at a property within five minutes of town and Calder Freeway access.

This big house, about 48 squares, is among other quality properties in a sought-after neighbourhood, and has a floorplan that can cater for all occasions. This is elegance personified – polished floorboards throughout, all windows beautifully dressed, five huge bedroms sharing three bathrooms and a powder room. The upstairs main bedroom has twin walk-in wardrobes and a lavish en suite with spa. Along with a living space, up here there’s a fantastic study with storage room, and a bay window providing spectacular views. Downstairs living zones include a study, a lounge-dining room, and a family-meals zone next to a storage-rich kitchen with 900mm gas cooktop and concealed dishwasher. The vast backyard has rear access from Mill Street, and there’s a massive shed here, built to a high standard, with concrete flooring and power connection. This impressive place has abundant off-street parking and is within an easy walk of town.
On about 2.02 hectares, five minutes from town, this quality residence of South Australian split-rock and red brick shows taste and style throughout, as do outdoor spaces and infrastructure. A chequerboard-tiled entry hall opens via multi-paned french doors to a carpeted lounge-dining room with brick fireplace, while another set introduces the family-meals area and kitchen (floorboards and wood heater). Tassy oak cabinetry and a dishwasher are salient kitchen features. Four recently re-carpeted bedrooms include the large main with walk-in wardrobe and en suite. The newly retiled main bathroom now has a walk-in shower. In fine support are a split-system, two outdoor relaxation areas, a horse paddock (watered), stables, town water, sprinkler system, integrated double garage, pretty gardens and an amazing two-storey barn with studio up top and workshop/garage below.

Now it’s on the market, ready to be snaffled as a unique home or business, set among extraordinary gardens on a block of about 5420 square metres. Fittingly, entry to the dwelling is under the original platform into a large, slate-tiled living room (now the cafe, formerly the waiting room), which has painted ceiling boards, picture rails, a rosette and wood heater under a period mantelpiece. bar serving the café is also in here. Next door, there’s an open-plan kitchen-sitting room. The kitchen has a big stainless-steel movable island bench, white-painted wooden cabinetry, wall oven, 900mm gas cooktop, dishwasher, a conservatory window above the sink and a big walk-in pantry. The charming sitting room, with wood heater, picture rail ledges, painted ceiling boards and exposed beams, has a leadlight door to an elevated deck with lovely views toward Mt William. Off here is an angled-ceiling bedroom (or studio with windows on three sides), with adjoining bathroom/laundry.
Another large bedroom has a rich Victorian ambience, an en suite with spa, and an adjoining office (now a private dining room). And there’s another cute loft bedroom, accessed via a white-painted staircase, which has walk-in wardrobe and en suite. The adjoining attic space is enormous and offers potential use as well. The former stationmaster’s office, with its ticket window, old cupboards and fireplace surround intact, could be an office, and there’s another huge living room with all the period bits, including Baltic boards. Next door to here is a bathroom decorated in keeping with the era.

The west-facing back verandah is an utterly private spot to bask in the beauty of the gardens, which have as many moods as there are glorious plantings. Meandering paths, arbours, a gazebo, vegie and herb gardens, an arched bridge over a waterlily pond – think Monet – make the gardens a journey of beautiful surprises. A massive, covered outdoor area, two driveways, one leading to house’s entry at the back, and permits still existing for nursery and café businesses are footnotes to a property made for dreams. SPORT Redbacks find a Way, and Hope stays on as shooter Lena Way hadn’t even thought of coaching Romsey Netball Club when she was approached to take on the A-grade side. A talented netballer who had represented her state and nation in mixed teams, Way has spent the past two years on the sidelines at the Redbacks, watching her husband and football star Ben. “Ben is on the committee and word got around about my netball background and they asked if I wanted to coach,” Way said last week. “Taking on the role isn’t something I take lightly. I have a two- and four-year-old and
my husband is already playing, but I felt like I could contribute to netball in the area.” Way has a big job ahead with most of last year’s A-grade side deciding not to return. But she has received one boost with star shooter Hope Evans staying on. Evans was originally going to line up for Ballarat Netball League side, the Sunbury Lions. “I have a lot of question marks still and, hopefully, can convince a few people to come across,” Way said. “We’re still recruiting and looking for talented A-grade players who are unsigned. Hope is our main goal shooter, and I know
she pained herself on the decision for weeks. Her family is here and she wants to give back to the club. To have her still playing is fantastic.” Way says she’s not planning on playing too much herself. “I wasn’t intending on playing again after having children and hurting my back. “I started playing at Romsey Stadium and have played there the last couple of years. It was a nice way to get back into it after thinking I couldn’t play. “Hopefully, I’ll be on the sidelines [at Romsey]; I prefer to coach from there. But
Dragons time their run By Tara Murray Gisborne is hitting form at the right time in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup. After all but securing a finals place going into the final round, the Dragons set about getting a win over third-placed Diggers Rest Bulla on Saturday. The Dragons bowled first and skittled the Burras for just 108. Dragons coach Simon Harman said the bowlers did exactly what he wanted. “Bowling is our strong suit and our bowling and fielding have been pretty good all year,” he said. “It was good to restrict them to 108.” Jay King took 4-8 from 9.5 overs, while Tahir Afridi claimed three. The turnaround with the ball this season has been a key factor in the Dragons’ transition from a non-finals team to a March contender. Only one of the Dragons’ five main bowlers was at the club last season. “Our bowling was something we identified as needing improvement this season,” Harman said. “Tahir has been fantastic all year [he has taken 42 wickets] and Jay King has been really good. Most of us had played against him before and he has played McIntyre Cup. He knows what to do. “It’s been good to have Beau [Valka] come back and we were lucky to have Clint Young walk in the door. “Darcy [Nolan], our other bowler, has been good, too.” But the job against the Burras isn’t finished yet and the Dragons will resume at 2-34 on Saturday. Daniel Trevillian is on 14 and Valka on four. Harman said the Dragons had settled on their batting line-up after several early-season changes. “We had to bat out time and it was nice to get a chunk of the score out of the way,” he said. “We’ve had the same line-up in the last couple of games. “We were very active early in the season, switching players around to get the right line-up.” A win against the Burras would give a huge boost in confidence to the Dragons. “It’s been so tight this year. We could come from only just scraping into the four [with a loss] to finishing on top of the ladder if results go our way,” Harman said. “Anyone can beat anyone on any day at any ground.” The other two sides in the top four are on track for wins. Ladder leaders Woodend made 9-299 against Sunbury, with Daniel Heaney making 96, while Riddell made 227 against Bacchus Marsh. Sunbury United racked up 223 against Romsey.
I might play enough games to qualify for finals, just in case.” Way, who hasn’t coached at senior level previously, says she’s hoping to help the club move forward so her daughter can eventually play for it. As well as coaching, she will run development clinics. “The president and committee want a sense of loyalty and players wanting to be involved at functions … I want them to see how close the club is.” Want to play for The Redbacks? Prez pays the bill as bowlers clean up For a third successive week, Sunbury Bowling Club has claimed five wins from five matches in Bowls Victoria Saturday pennants. A clean sweep – a win for all the club’s five teams – is a rare occurrence, but Sunbury has done it four times this season. “The club president said at the start of the season there would be free drinks on the bar if we could get five wins on one day,” Sunbury player Dave Glennon said on Sunday. “Three weeks in a row breaks his heart . . . we had more than 150 people at the club last night.” Sunbury’s top side is leading the way in division 2, section 2 and had already sealed a home final even before Saturday’s 78 (16)-59 (2) win over Buckley Park. Brad Janner’s rink won 21-12, Mark Cowan’s rink 23-13, Brad Willoughby won 22-14 and Deeon Dean, deputising for Elise Cowan, lost 20-12. Cowan, who played her 100th game for Victoria during the week, is expected to return this week. Sunbury’s second side, now fourth on the division 3, section 2 ladder, has included Australian representative Carla Krizanic as a skip for the past two matches. “Carla isn’t going to be playing finals so we want to try to keep the same side in the top team ahead of finals,” Glennon said. “Obviously if she was playing finals she would be in our number one team.” The club’s third side (division 5, section 1) and number five side (division 8, section 2) will host home finals after securing top-two finishes. Its division 5, section 2 team sits seventh on the ladder after five consecutive wins. Meanwhile, the Central Highlands Bowls Division finals kicked off in division 2 and division 3 on Saturday. Gisborne won through to the grand final of division 2 with a 101 (14)-92 (4) win over Bacchus Marsh. In the preliminary final, Bacchus Marsh will play Trentham, which beat Kyneton 95 (14)-86 (4) on Saturday. In division 3, Romsey sneaked into the grand final with a three-shot victory over Gisborne Red, 65 (13)-62 (2). Gisborne Red will play Lancefield in the preliminary final after Lancefield beat Bacchus Marsh 66 (12)-58 (4). Division 1 finals start this week, with Gisborne playing Kyneton Golf Gold at Trentham and Lancefield against Bacchus Marsh at Kyneton Golf.

Tigers start well before collapse dents finals hopes Lancefield’s finals hopes are hanging by a thread after day one of the match against Wallan in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s B grade competition. The Tigers began the match needing a win and either a loss or a narrow win by Bacchus Marsh against East Sunbury. Saturday started well for the Tigers before a disastrous final hour at Greenhill Oval left them with a mountain to climb. Nathan Malone was the star with the ball, taking 5-32 from 24 overs as the Tigers dismissed Wallan for 94. Matthew Bowden bowled tightly at the other end for his 1-25 off 17 overs.
Lancefield faced 20 overs at the end of the day with the chance to build a platform for victory. Instead, they collapsed to be 6-29 at stumps, with Jarryd McGill (22) the only batsman to find the middle of the bat. One positive for the Tigers going into day two is that their best batsman, skipper Luke Barker, has yet to take guard. At Bacchus Marsh, the home side did everything right in its bid for fourth spot, making 8-266 against East Sunbury. It was an even contribution, with the top nine batsmen all making double figures. Lachlan Wilkins took four wickets for the
Thunder, who need to win to keep alive their chances of not finishing on the bottom of the ladder. Macedon, still a mathematical chance of making finals, is in control after day one of the match against Ashfield. But both sides still could finish bottom and face relegation depending on other results. Macedon opener Taylor Stevenson made 90 in Macedon’s total of 8-255. Skipper Gareth De Rosayro chipped in with 56 and Daniel Trotta made 45 not out. Ashfield tried just about everything to bowl out Macedon, with nine players getting to roll an arm over.
Branden Paul was the pick of them with 4-72 from his 23 overs. In the battle for top spot, Rupertswood took the points on day one of the match against St Anthonys. Rupertswood made the worst possible start, slumping to 4-7 and then 5-23. Chris Ryan then provided the key to the innings and batted with Kyahl Anderson, Liam McLean and John Lane to set the platform for a decent score. Ryan went on to an unbeaten 109 in Rupertswood’s 9-220. Tara Murray
Sunbury Lions’ desire for glory undimmed
New Sunbury Jets recruit Emma Mahady has been reunited with former coach Kennedy Kereama. (Shawn Smits)
Reunion a win for Jets By Tara Murray It was a case of the right time and right place for Sunbury Jets recruit Emma Mahady. Having returned home to Albury-Wodonga in recent months after stints in the US and Queensland, Mahady was considering what her next basketball step would be. An approach from Sunbury Jets coach Kennedy Kereama was all it took for Mahady to join the Big V team. “Kennedy coached me back in AlburyWodonga when I was 15,” Mahady recalls. “I was open to locations and Melbourne worked out in more ways than one. “Kennedy opened up an opportunity for me to come down to the Jets and keep working on my game. I thought it was a good idea … it’s just one of those things that came together.” Mahady has come a long way since Kereama coached her when she played in the country’s second-best competition, the SEABL.
Mahady was just 16 when she made her debut for the Lady Bandits and she last played in that competition as a 20-year-old. She then spent four years at the California University of Pennsylvania, for whom she played a major part in a very successful senior year. “I had a good four years there and learnt a lot,” she said. “I made a lot of friends and had some fun – it was a good experience. “In my last year, we were the national champions of our division [NCAA division 2]. “Personally, I made the all-conference first team and got an honourable mention as an All-American, which I never thought would happen. “I also scored 1000 points in my senior year … never thought that would happen either. It was a good year.” Mahady said her basketball game had developed a lot in her four years at college.
“The thing I learnt most was that hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard,” she said. “We weren’t the most talented team but we worked the hardest. Hard work does pay off.” After returning from college, Mahady played in the Queensland Basketball League. “I went straight from college up to Queensland,” she said. “I think I only played about half a season, but it was good experience.” Kereama believes Mahady has potential to be a WNBL player. Mahady herself just wants to be the best player she can be. “I go hard all the time,” she said. “My effort is always there, but sometimes I don’t pull it off as well as I should. “Some days aren’t as good as others, which happens. I always try my best and if one thing isn’t working, I look to another thing to get that one going.”
The hunger is strong in the Sunbury Lions as they enter a new season of the Ballarat Netball League. Having played in the past three grand finals, including successive losses, the Lions could perhaps be forgiven for easing up a little. But captain Beck Anstey says the Lions are again looking to be among the top teams despite having a slightly different line-up. “Absolutely not,” she said when asked if the team’s expectations would differ from those of recent years. “I think our defence and mid-court are pretty strong and we’re still doing some recruiting at the attacking end. “There’s no reason why we can’t be competitive again. I want to finish in the top six and hopefully the top three.” The club will start the season without a coach, with former Yarra Valley Ariels Grammar division 1 coach Karen Meredith to come on board later in the season. “We thought Karen would be a good fit for us and we’re holding out for her,” Anstey said. “She has coached most of us at Ariels and is familiar with us. She’ll likely join us in about August.” Anstey, a key player, will be joined by Prue Stanley, Kate Fletcher and Katelyn Begeley. Monique Clark, who was best on court in the A-reserve grand final win last year, will step up a grade. The experienced Lauren Gilchrist will again switch between the top two grades. “We will look to make sure we’ve got at least eight players each Saturday and will draw on players from the lower grades if we have to,” Anstey said. Anstey said the club was still speaking with star goalshooter Chloe Curran about fitting in some Lions games around her Victorian Netball league commitments. It’s the shooting end of the court, where the Lions are still hoping to add a couple of players. “We had Hope [Evans] signed up and she has pulled the pin and gone back to Romsey,” Anstey said. “It’s disappointing and has really put us behind the eight-ball as a result. “We’re focused on getting a couple more players for the attacking end and hopefully have them on board in the next few weeks.” The Lions will host a sportsmen’s night on Friday, March 18. Former AFL star Luke Darcy and former Australian basketballer Chris Anstey will speak at the event at Keilor Park. Details: http://ow.ly/Yz542 Tara Murray
