Blitz on station parking Parking officers are planning to come down hard on commuters leaving their cars in short-term bays next to Sunbury train station, with an enforcement blitz getting under way this week. The blitz is expected to worsen the town’s parking woes, with many train passengers already resorting to leaving their cars in nearby side streets. Hume council has confirmed that the new owners of Sunbury Central shopping centre have asked officers to start patrolling its three-hour bays. Cautions will be issued in the short term but before long those caught breaking restrictions will be slapped with $50 fines. Critics of the crackdown say it only highlights the desperate need for more parking in Sunbury’s CBD. All-day parking on the shopping centre’s top level, reserved for train passengers under a deal made when the Sunbury line was electrified, is typically full by 7am on weekdays. Sunbury Train Association member Paul Campbell said commuters were increasingly left with few options. ‘‘With so many more people using the trains, the parks are filling up a lot earlier than they used to,’’ he said. Plans for a private multi-level carpark in the area were abandoned in 2011, despite extensive talks with the council and Public Transport Victoria. Cr Jack Medcraft said that with 20 to 30 cars using Sunbury Central’s

short-term bays every day, it was clear that authorities had ‘‘stuffed up’’. ‘‘We all know there’s a major shortage right across central Sunbury,’’ he said. ‘‘PTV has a responsibility to provide parking … they saw fit to build a park-and-ride at Diggers Rest when it was redeveloped, but why the hell didn’t they do it in Sunbury?’’

‘‘

- Paul Campbell In October last year, the council and Sunbury Business Association warned that overwhelming demand was stopping some people from accessing train services and was having a noticeable affect on nearby businesses. Council city infrastructure director Peter Waite said that with new data showing up to 2.7 million people used trains between Sunbury and Keilor Plains stations every year, the need for more parking bays was urgent. ‘‘Hume has regularly called on the state government to increase parking for rail commuters at Sunbury,’’ he said. A PTV spokesman said the 350 commuter spaces at Sunbury Central were marked in yellow and not subject to time restrictions. ‘’PTV will continue to monitor demand for these spaces, and explore ways to improve parking arrangements at Sunbury station.’’

Salute for Lone Pine memorial Gisborne cemetery’s life-size statue of a World War I soldier continues to attract positive feedback from visitors. The bronze memorial, unveiled last year on the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Lone Pine, is near a lone pine tree that comes from an original seed on the battlefields at Gallipoli. Set on a granite plinth, the statue honours soldiers who fought in the Great War, including many locals buried at the cemetery and provides a place for many people to reflect on occasions such as Anzac Day. Gisborne and District Lions Club president Ross Sapwell recently presented cemetery trust president Doug McArthur with $2000 to help meet the cost of the memorial. The money was raised through sales of Lions’ Christmas cakes. Mr McArthur said the statue had been a popular addition to the cemetery grounds. “The reaction has been terrific really.’’

Forum offers chance to upload internet misery McEwen residents fed up with the stalled rollout of the National Broadband Network will have the chance to vent their frustrations at a forum in Sunbury this week. With many people in newer areas of Sunbury, including Jacksons Hill, still unable to access even basic ADSL, the forum will hear from residents who have had their study and work lives disrupted by NBN delays. Many have resorted to expensive wireless broadband, with no ADSL ports available. Sunbury’s Robert Coburn said the lack of suitable internet was having a major effect on his family, including three students.

‘‘We had the NBN when we lived in Bacchus Marsh some years back,” he said. “Coming to Sunbury, it’s like it’s 1973 by comparison.’’ Gisborne’s Carmen McKinney said her husband, a consultant in the water industry, had to quit his job because fixed internet was not available. ‘‘We did all our homework before moving in two years ago,’’ she said. ‘‘Even to this day they will tell you ADSL is available, but it’s not.’’ Her teenage children have resorted to using free wi-fi at McDonald’s for their homework. Federal opposition communications spokesman Jason Clare will be part of

Thursday’s event, which will be hosted by McEwen MP Rob Mitchell. Mr Mitchell said residents affected by internet and mobile phone woes were contacting his office daily. “With so much of our lives online today, access to fast, reliable and affordable internet isn’t a luxury – it’s a necessity,’’ he said. Construction of the NBN began in Sunbury in 2013 and was scheduled for total completion by June last year. The rollout was put on hold following the Liberal government’s revised NBN plan and is now expected to finish in Sunbury some time next year.

Farmers treading water By Matt Crossman More Macedon Ranges farmers are switching to recycled water as concern about low rainfall continues to mount. Bureau of Meteorology figures show that just 139 millimetres fell between January and April, well below the long-term average for those months of 211.8 millimetres. Eleven municipalities in central and western Victoria are currently classed as drought affected, with Bendigo council last week deciding to write to the state government asking to be added to the list. Macedon Ranges council economic development and tourism manager Kylie Lethbridge said that while water was high on the agenda for last week’s meeting of the shire’s agribusiness forum, the council had yet to request drought status. ‘‘However, it is an ongoing concern, particularly due to the recent low rainfall,’’ she said. Western Water customer and community relations general manager Graham Holt said 15 new customers had hooked up to the authority’s recycled water schemes in Gisborne, Gisborne South, Woodend, Romsey and Riddells Creek in the past two years. Wheat and sheep farmer Angus Crawford recently had recycled water connected to the 2023-hectare property he leases near Riddells Creek. He said the move would increase the value of his lambs by more than $20 per head. ‘‘Eight weeks after sowing I had sheep on it,’’ Mr Crawford said. ‘‘Without the recycled water, it would have been bare dirt and waiting for rain.’’ Lancefield agronomist James Almond said it had been a tough season for many on the land, including those growing clovers, rye grass and cereals. ‘‘It’s been a dry start up but it looks like there may be a good finish, so that gives you some confidence,’’ he said. ‘‘Some clients are backing off because there’s no rain, but you have to start sowing somewhere.”

Ratepayers in for $50 rise Rates for the average Macedon Ranges property owner are likely to rise $50, according to the council’s draft budget. The draft, which will be presented to councillors on Wednesday night, calls for an average increase of 2.5 per cent in 2016-17, taking the average bill to $2069. But final bills could fluctuate as 2016 is a revaluation year. If the budget is approved, rate rises will be the lowest in at least five years, with recent increases approaching 5 per cent. Councillors have previously complained about the state government’s new rate-rise capping measures, which restrict increases to those of the consumer price index from this year. The council’s proposed budget would bring in $43.59 million in rates and charges to fund $80.5 million in total expenditure, with the remainder to come from other funding sources. Capital works spending is expected to reach $23.50 million, similar to recent budgets despite the reduced rates increase. No new loans are proposed for 2016-17. In a preface to the budget, mayor Graham Hackett said that in the fourth year of its current term, the council’s focus was on meeting its commitments. ‘‘We know we must balance the environmental, infrastructure and social needs with our income from rates, fees and grants,’’ he said. ‘‘I think our draft budget is an affordable response to those needs.’’ Cr Hackett encouraged ratepayers to take part in the consultation process, with submissions to be heard at a special meeting on Wednesday, June 1, ahead of the budget’s official adoption on June 22. Bike group crunches the numbers By Matt Crossman Sunbury Bicycle Users Group will conduct a bike and pedestrian count on Vineyard Road as it continues to push for the extension of a path that stops dangerously short of a Calder Freeway overpass. VicRoads has confirmed that Hume and Melton councils have agreed on a strategy and shared responsibilities for the completion of the path. However, the Diggers Rest side of the path won’t be done until a developer funds its

share. Sunbury BUG spokesman Hector Bugeja said the proposed timeline of up to five years was of major concern. ‘‘Without being too dramatic, there’s a serious risk that someone will be badly injured or killed in the meantime,’’ the former Bulla councillor said. As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, the path currently ends 200 metres before the Calder Freeway at Moore Road, forcing cyclists and pedestrians heading for Diggers Rest to cross on to the busy road.

While VicRoads will carry out its own assessment of the site, Sunbury BUG volunteers will conduct a bike and pedestrian count all day on May 7, aiming to highlight the need for urgent action. ‘‘With all the housing going up in Diggers Rest and a proposed primary school on Vineyard Road, there’s going to be a lot of movement of people across that road,’’ Mr Bugeja said. ‘‘There’s not a lot of people who use it at the minute because it doesn’t go anywhere.

“What we’re saying is, if you want this pathway, let them [VicRoads and the councils] know.’’ Mr Bugeja, who has previously criticised the longer timeframes of strategies and possible major upgrades for the path, said a short-term solution could be achieved as soon as someone put up the money. VicRoads has previously said path improvements would be considered as part of a $100 million program for new facilities across the state.

Sunbury Rotarians such as David Allan and Bruce Wallace (pictured) are ready to hit the road for the club’s Ride for Motor Neurone Disease (MND) this Sunday. Participants can choose from three rides as part of this year’s charity event. There’s a 16-kilometre short ride on Mitchells Lane, Moore Road and Vineyard Road ($15 per person); a 37-kilometre intermediate ride from Sunbury to South Gisborne, Gisborne and return ($30 per person); and a 65-kilometre long ride from Sunbury to South Gisborne, Barringo, Macedon, Gisborne and return ($55 per person). Marshals will be stationed along the routes. A water stop, a barbecue, fruit and drinks is included in the entry fees. Money raised will help MND Victoria’s efforts to provide support and lead research into the terminal neurological disease. Details: 0417 314 479 or www.rotaryclubsunbury.org.au

By Matt Crossman Sunbury and Macedon Ranges Specialist School will receive $4 million in this week’s state budget as part of a $155.8 million package to upgrade Victorian schools and improve support for pupils with special needs. Premier Daniel Andrews, Education Minister James Merlino and Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas made the announcement during a visit to the school’s Bullengarook senior campus last week. Twenty specialist schools will be upgraded, while mainstream schools will receive extra money to meet the learning requirements of students with special needs. Almost $50 million will support an extra 1750 Victorian students expected to be eligible for the program for students with disabilities in 2017. A total of $22 million will go towards helping students with autism and dyslexia, with increases to the number of speech pathologists, reading intervention programs and teacher training in schools. Another $15.6 million will be spent on replacing older buses and helping children with disabilities travel between home and school. Specialist school senior campus principal, Brendan Nolan, said the school community would determine how the money, available for both campuses, was spent. The school has about 200 students across its junior and senior facilities. Mr Nolan said that while he wouldn’t go as far as to say the specialist sector had been the

Willowbank Early Learning Centre, the only privately owned and operated childcare centre in the Gisborne area, is a modern, fun facility that incorporates creative spaces for children to explore, learn and enjoy.

“A typical day varies with age but includes family grouping in the mornings and afternoons, free play, sleep and relaxation, social interaction, sensory play, music and art, outdoor and indoor play, and pre-literacy and numeracy programs.”

Back in the days when her children were ready to head off to childcare, centre owner Michelle McCarthy realised there weren’t many places from which she could choose.

The qualified, hands-on staff are passionate about early childhood development and speak with parents daily, keeping them up-to-date with their children’s performances and informing them of any issues.

“There was a gap in the market,” she says. “My children spent seven years in childcare, so I understand the demands placed on busy families. This led to a strong desire to offer families a safe, happy and engaging childcare.”

Hopes soar for station revival By Matt Crossman

As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, the group recently secured the support of Macedon Ranges council in its fight for better maintenance of the precinct, with Cr Jennifer Anderson lashing out at the condition of the station’s historic buildings and surrounds. Mr Todd said the condition of the 1862 station had been a problem since it was closed in 1978. The group believes the station, which remains an active stop on the Bendigo line, should be upgraded as a shelter or community hub. Having discovered the most recent lease

A community group long dismayed by long-term maintenance issues at privately leased Malmsbury train station is preparing a business case in the hope of securing the site when the existing contract ends in September. Malmsbury Historical Society secretary Mike Todd confirmed the group was liaising with Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas as it prepared plans for an arts, tourism and history hub at the site, unused for many years after being leased to a private tenant by VicTrack.

extension was for just 14 months, Mr Todd said Save Malmsbury Station supporters were preparing to make a play. ‘‘We’re pretty excited,’’ he said. ‘‘We had thought the lease was locked in for 10 more years.’’ Ms Thomas, who has previously made representations to the government over the maintenance issues, has promised to present the group’s business case for consideration. Government, heritage and some philanthropic funding is likely to be sought for a centre focused on the arts, tourism and

local history. The business plan will include potential uses for land surrounding the station. ‘‘The station complex has, unusually, quite a large parcel of land as well,’’ Mr Todd said. Mr Todd said money could be available under VicTrack’s formal policy of handing over vacant stations for community use. ‘‘Large amounts would be required, especially considering the condition of the station’s buildings,’’ he said. ‘‘There’s going to have to be some ongoing money for the running of it … but we’ve got one or two income possibilities that we will reveal in the plan.’’

Redundant workers turn to pokies By Matt Crossman New data reveals more than $70 million has been gambled on poker machines in Hume since the start of the financial year. Latest Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation figures also show that more than $9.3 million was poured into Sunbury’s 230 poker machines in the six months to December, with the annual spend likely to nudge $20 million. More than $6 million was spent on the 103 machines in the Macedon Ranges.

The figures have been met with concern by researchers and community health experts, who believe that fewer people are playing the machines but those who do are more likely to be problem gamblers. Sunbury Community Health child, youth and family services manager Marcus Bosch said counsellors had noticed a disturbing trend – clients who had received redundancy payouts becoming addicted to gambling. ‘‘[They’re] often unaware that the payouts result in a preclusion period, preventing them from receiving Centrelink benefits,’’ Mr Bosch

said. ‘‘Without work, they can suddenly find themselves lonely and isolated, with time on their hands and their redundancy payout available to them.’’ Mr Bosch said most people using SCH’s gambling counselling service had a problem with poker machines. ‘‘Many people still aren’t aware that gambling can develop into a genuine addiction similar to substance addiction, which is why it has such a destructive impact on the lives of so many people,’’ he said. ‘‘Gambling addiction doesn’t just affect the person with the addiction but

War tunes a hot ticket Sunbury residents need to act quickly if they want to be there when a locally-written musical theatre production paying tribute to the Anzacs makes its home debut. Created in the lead-up to last year’s Gallipoli centenary, Sunbury Choral Association’s We Will Remember Them garnered rave reviews for two shows staged in Melton in March 2015. The production’s story, costumes, decor and foyer displays proved so popular that Melton council commissioned an extra performance, which was held in April last year. The show’s popularity has followed it home, with tickets for a matinee show at Sunbury’s Boilerhouse Theatre this Saturday selling out soon after going on sale. Limited tickets remain available for sessions at 7.30pm this Saturday night and 2pm on Sunday. Choral group spokeswoman Deb Poulter-Sweeney says the show, which takes

audiences on a musical journey through various stages of war, is packed with emotion. ‘‘There’s elation, there’s devastation … there’s a bit of laughter, as well,’’ she says. We Will Remember Them features a mix of whole-choir and small-group numbers and solo pieces, poems and sketches. Action takes place on two stages – the main stage showing what is happening at war and a mezzanine telling the story of those at home. Costumes and decor reflect the World War I theme, while audience refreshments are provided through individual rations handed out at interval. Tickets cost $20; concession $15. Bookings essential. has flow-on effects to family members and friends.’’ Mr Bosch echoed Monash University public health professor Charles Livingstone, who recently told Star Weekly arguments that club-run pokies created many jobs and generated significant economic activity were ‘‘nonsense’’. ‘‘We see the real damage to people’s lives that is caused by addiction to poker machines,’’ Mr Bosch said. ‘‘The harm of poker machines greatly exceeds any benefits.’’

MY PLACE Having grown up in a US military family, Opera Australia chorus singer Kristen Leich has travelled widely. The former New York City Opera performer and mother of two tells Matt Crossman why she calls Kyneton home. How did you come to live in the Macedon Ranges? It’s a bit of a love story. My former employer in the US is Australian and her friends are now my in-laws. My husband and I met in New York and one thing led to another. We decided New York probably wasn’t the best place to raise a family and it was much easier for his work [as a property valuer] to live in Australia … so we came back to his home town, Kyneton, in 2012. I understand you grew up in Colorado Springs? Mostly. I was in a military family, so we kind of lived everywhere. Having been to many places around the world, how have you found Kyneton?

What are your thoughts about the local arts scene? I’m part of a group called Music in the Central Highlands. I’ve been really fortunate to be involved in that concert series. Occasionally, we get to catch some local theatre or something. It’s hard to make the time, but thank God for the town hall. There’s some really great shows that come through.

(Luke Hemer)

I’ve come to really love it. It wasn’t such a large leap, coming from Colorado originally. I really like that we know our neighbours and the fact we are right near Piper Street. It’s great to be able to get a meal or a craft beer whenever you want.

What are some of the local cafes you visit? Oh my goodness, where do I start? I must say my heart belongs to Major Tom’s … they have got fantastic burgers and we’ve had some good

experiences there. We also love Pizza Verde, which is run by a fellow American, and Little Swallow. The Royal George [Hotel] is another favourite … we had our wedding reception there.

■ Kristen Leich will perform in Opera Australia’s productions of La Boheme and The Pearlfishers in Melbourne next month. Details: www.opera.org.au

Sunbury Bicycle Users Group believes that while efforts are being made to convince VicRoads, Melton and Hume councils of the importance of a pedestrian/cyclist connection between Sunbury and Diggers Rest by extending the Vineyard Road shared pathway over the Calder Freeway to Diggers Rest, there’s still some way to go. Roads Minister Luke Donnellan has advised that a factor for extending this pathway as proposed will be if it is listed as a priority for the state government’s $100 million safe cyclists and pedestrian fund. However, a real concern is that VicRoads may take into account the results of its planned pedestrian and cyclists volume count on the current Vineyard Road pathway in making this decision. These figures may not reflect the need for the connection, as currently the Vineyard Road pathway terminates at Moore Road. It doesn’t go anywhere, so the community does not regularly use it. Large housing developments on both sides of the Calder Highway will increase the need and importance of this extension, which is also justified based on safety alone. I have cycled over the Digger Rest overpass and am very concerned for the safety of any cyclists or pedestrians who currently use the overpass. Sunbury Bicycle Users Group now asks the community, including developers and builders, to add their weight to efforts to extend the existing pathway over the Calder. This support should include writing and emailing Mr Donnellan and the two councils on the need for this connection.

Calder Park Drive overpass push

The time has come to push for the Calder Park Drive overpass. Over the next five to 10 years, there will be about 100,000 vehicle movements per day on the Calder Freeway at Keilor through to the Calder Park Drive exit. Can you afford to be waiting on the Calder Freeway shoulder to get onto the current Calder Park Drive exit during peak period when trains close the crossing every 15 minutes? No! Can we continue to go from 80km/h to 100km/h, then back to 80km/h again on this section of the Calder Freeway? Can we continue to allow drivers to go straight through the median strip when driving along Calder Park Drive to go to the city, rather than use the newly created U-turn at Organ Pipes Road? As a community, we cannot wait another 10-20 years for urgent road infrastructure with the significant increase in the population for this region. I urge residents to sign the online petition at www.brendanoconnor.com.au/ Campaigns/Support-the-Calder-Park-Drive-

Re the Macedon Ranges protection issues paper that asks for community feedback. For something this important, there has been very little publicity or community engagement in this critical process. The state government promised us legislation based on Statement of Planning Policy No. 8, the former policy that has applied to the central, eastern and southern parts of the shire for 40 years. The issues paper instead includes the council’s failed 2014 ‘non-protection’, economics/growth-focussed localised planning statement (LPS) as an alternative to Policy No. 8 as the basis for legislation. Why? The council’s LPS is the opposite of ‘protection’, and not what the state government promised. DID YOU KNOW

VOTING RULES HAVE CHANGED?

Make your vote count this federal election. At this year’s federal election, the way you vote for the Senate has changed and it’s important that you understand how to vote correctly.

If you choose to vote below the line, you must number at least 12 boxes, from 1 to 12, for individual candidates in the order of your choice.

On the large white Senate ballot paper, you can choose to vote either above or below the line.

Voting for the House of Representatives has not changed. On the green ballot paper, you must number every box, starting with the number ‘1’ for your first choice, ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you have numbered every box.

If you choose to vote above the line, you now need to number at least 6 boxes. Put the number ‘1’ in the box for the party or group that is your first choice, a ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you’ve numbered at least 6 boxes.

‘How to vote’ instructions will be clearly displayed on your ballot paper. Don’t worry if you make a mistake — just ask for another ballot paper.

This federal election your vote will help shape Australia.

The shared bathroom has distressed floorboards and an original pedestal basin. Multi-paned French doors link a lounge room to the family-meals space. The adjoining kitchen has a new Bellini cooker and a Euromaid dishwasher. A split-system and 2kW solar system are extras. Outside, the wonderful gardens come with mature plantings, fruit trees and other exotics, while a wooden deck provides a timeout spot. A caravan from the ‘70s in original condition is a quirky place to house guests or teens. There are sheds, a chicken coop and shelter for two cars. “REMEMBER WITH GRATITUDE” ANZAC Day is a time to stop and remember with gratitude the thousands of men and women who have fought and are still fighting to maintain our freedom, our lifestyle. We remember those who did not come home, who lie on distant shores far from family. Though it is essential that we always remember those who gave their lives for us, let us also remember the parents, partners and children who wait at home for their loved ones to return. In this age of instant communication with email, skype, facebook, mobile phones, it is difficult to imagine the agony of “not knowing”. The First World War, the Second, Korea, Vietnam were all before the advent of modern communication and families relied on letters which often took weeks or months to arrive. For many families it was the dreaded telegram, “missing in action presumed dead”. War is such a dreadful waste of life but the impact of war is widespread. Families left behind learnt to cope but the pain affected af all. Those who went to war and came home carried unseen scars, which, with time may fade but never completely heal. So many men and women return with physical disabilities – whole and hearty young people who return from war with lung damage, missing limbs or eyesight and with long term mental anguish.

With its sparkling modernity, appealing décor and flexibility in how rooms are used, this is a place designed with families in mind – further supported by being within an amble of St Mary’s Primary School and shops and a short bike ride away from Lancefield Primary School. It’s the small décor tweaks that stand out. Floor tiles and roller blinds are soft-grey, carpets are mid-grey, walls are sandstone and cabinetry is chocolate.

The secondary bedrooms take it up a notch, with one having charcoal sheers on a window framed by lovely black-and-white wallpaper (a sophisticated room for a teen?), while the other has pink striped wallpaper ready for its new princess. The large, tiled living hub becomes two spaces, separated by a glass slider, if an adjoining, laminate-floored room is used as a rumpus/playroom – or it could serve as a fourth bedroom.

The kitchen has an island bench, a step-in pantry, white splashback tiles, a dishwasher, underbench oven and gas cooktop. The main bedroom, with walk-in wardrobe and en suite, is near the front door, while the others (with wardrobes) are down a tiled hallway, as are bathroom and toilet. A gabled pergola above concrete is a huge space outside the meals zone. It has a wooden bar to elbow as the cook

The Riddells Creek property market is tightly held with only 48 homes selling in 2015. With neighboring towns such as Gisborne and Sunbury reaching saturation, Riddells Creek is becoming highly sought by families looking to secure a more laid back lifestyle whist retaining all of the modern conveniences they enjoy today. The area has seen significant capital growth over the past years, however in comparison to neighboring towns such as Gisborne, there appears to be room for far greater returns in the future. Competition is strong on most properties, with the majority of homes selling with multiple buyers expressing an interest. All in all, Riddells Creek is a great place to raise a family and invest in for your future.

SPORT Sunbury wins big, but it it doesn’t come easy It was another big win for Sunbury Jets women’s side on Saturday night, but they were made to work hard for the points against Hawthorn. The Big V division 1 clash was a low-scoring affair early as the Magic defence stood strong making the Jets fight hard for every basket. After scores were level at half-time, the Jets upped the ante in the second half to run away with a 67-38 win. Jets coach Kennedy Kereama felt the end margin did not reflect the match and how hard the Magic made them work. “They came out ready to play and did a great job defensively to dictate where we were taking

our shots,” he said. “They had Emily Fielding, who I coached in the WNBL. She came out fired-up and I’m sure she wanted to perform against one of her old coaches. “Stamina-wise, we were able to maintain a consistent level and play more our style in the season half. I think there’s still a lot from the game we can improve.” Kereama said he expected other sides to throw things at them as they attempt to maintain their good start to the season. “We need to stay level-headed, there’s only a quarter of the season done,” he said. “I don’t think it’ll come easy. We made a statement and

other sides have taken note and will want to beat us.” Once again the Jets shared the points around with all but one of the 11 who played getting on the scoreboard. Emma Mahady top-scored with 16, while Courtney Duever, Monique Stevens and Jess Bygate all scored 11. Kereama said he was pleased with how Duever had settled into the side after arriving from the US only a week and a half ago. “She has meshed with the girls,” he said. “A large reason we got her out here was for her character and character will count over talent.”

Scoring machine jets in By Tara Murray Sunbury Jets import Ish Sanders always planned to play basketball in Australia; it was a matter of finding the right time. He met Jets’ men’s coach Andrew Summerville while still in college in the US and the two had kept in touch. It all came together late last year when Sanders, formerly of Carson-Newman University, Tennessee, signed with the Jets as one of their two imports. “I was supposed to come to Australia after college,” Sanders said. “In sophomore year, Andrew came and spoke about playing basketball overseas and the good and bad things about it. “We lost contact when I graduated but got back in touch and the timing was right.” Sanders has fitted straight into the Jets and the Sunbury community. “I’d sort of been bouncing around Europe playing basketball and I wanted to go play somewhere I’d be comfortable,” he says. “Everyone has been welcoming, to say the least. It feels sort of like home.” Described by his coach as a scoring machine when his signing was announced, Sanders has proved to be just that. He averages 30 points across the first six games, sitting second in the division 1 competition. Last weekend he had 39 and 48 points in successive days. For the man himself, it’s not all about scoring. “Scoring has never been a problem,” he says. “I look to help the team and do whatever we need to do to win. “Sometimes I need to be the one scoring, and credit to Andrew for putting me in the right spots and my teammates for getting me the ball. They find me and are very unselfish.” Sanders says that despite a tough start to the season for the Jets, he’s relishing the responsibility of leading a young team. “Honestly, it can be challenging at times, but I’m never one to step into anything that’s easy. “I don’t want to just come along for the ride. I’m trying to lead these guys and they couldn’t be a nicer group of players. “There will be mistakes, but it’s an exciting team and it’s been fun.” As well as leading the side, Sanders has no problem with being the oppositions sides’ number one target. “Having more attention on me makes it fun,” he says. “Everyone in the league wants to target me and shut me down. “It’s not always a bad thing as it takes the pressure off the young guys and I can handle it.” On Saturday night, the Jets lost to Blackburn 87-78. Losing the first three quarters, the Jets fought back in the last, scoring 32-11, but were too far behind to close the gap. Sanders top scored with 25 points, with Kade Marra scoring 14.

Alex Darby, in her first season in the women’s side, got given the opportunity to start on the court for a second straight week. “Chelsea [Burns] missed training due to work and sickness and it’s only fair to those who train to get the start,” Kereama said. “Chelsea will start again this week. “Last week I threw it at [Alex] that she was starting just before the game. I told her on Thursday this week .” The Jets now face Western Port at Boardman Stadium on Sunday. Tara Murray

Greenvale on the hunt for fresh talent Greenvale Kangaroos plan to tap into the local talent in Melbourne’s north-west and the Macedon Ranges to develop its Premier Cricket side. The Kangaroos, who have finished on the bottom of the Premier Cricket ladder for the past two seasons, will be building from the bottom up. Kangaroos’ coach Stan Nell said Sunbury and Macedon Ranges were full of talented players who could play Premier Cricket. “We’re trying to … create opportunities for players in the north-west and Macedon Ranges area,” he said. “We’re after players who have played first 11 cricket for their clubs and are keen to play Premier Cricket. “We’d be keen to chat to players to see where they’re playing and what they want from their cricket.” He said the club would also be happy to look at players who had previous Premier Cricket experience and wanted to have a second crack. “We have a good group of young players and we need a bit of experience around them.” Nell said players from Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges had steered away from coming to the Kangaroos. He estimated at least 20 players drove past the club to go to other Premier Cricket clubs. “When we were at Arden Street [and still North Melbourne] we got a lot of players from the area,” he said. “Since we’ve shifted they seem to be going to Footscray, Essendon, Northcote and Carlton and driving past us. We would be a completely different club if we could get some of them to play for us.” And there are also opportunities outside the playing group. “We are looking for three to four ambitious coaches who would possibly like to do an apprenticeship in Premier Cricket. “It’s a high-performance environment and provides the chance for coaches to upskill, before possibly taking those skills back to local clubs.” Nell said he was confident of keeping the team together. “Most have committed to play for us,” he said. “There’s been a bit of interest from county clubs and players from Sri Lanka. We’ll see how that fits in with our development.” For more information contact Nell on 0413 809 820

Sunbury wins battle of the Roos to go back to back Early signs are good for the Sunbury Kangaroos, who made it two from two with a big win over Broadford in the Riddell District Football League on Saturday. Unsure where they would sit this season, the Kangaroos have started the year with wins over Romsey and Broadford, who were last year’s premiers and preliminary finalists. At Boardman Reserve on Saturday, the Kangaroos had the answers to all Broadford’s attacks on the way to an 18.13 (121) - 11.12 (78) win. The Roos made the most of kicking with the wind to open a 32-point lead at the first break. And Broadford – also known as the

Kangaroos – did the same at the start of the second quarter with the first three goals before Sunbury hit back with two of their own. Broadford played its best football early in the second half and looked set to take control. But again Sunbury responded with six goals for the quarter to virtually have the game in their keeping. And when they kicked the first of the last term it was as good as over. Sunbury coach Jarrod Dixon said he was happy with how his side had started the season. “They’re starting to gel,” he said. “We’ve brought in new players and it will take time, but you can see they have a strong bond and I’m really happy at the moment.”

Key areas which stood out for Sunbury were their contested football in the attacking half and an ability to regroup each time Broadford looked like getting on top. “The contested ball is about the responsibility and trust as a team, to know that one player is going to do the tackling and the other player is going to put the pressure on,” Dixon said. “If the forward line does it, everyone else will follow. It’s natural for the forward line and probably natural for the mids, but if your forward line puts on that sort of pressure you’ll see the results. “What impressed me was our mindset that we settled down [when Broadford got on a run]

Lions claw to narrow win By Tara Murray Sunbury Lions got out of jail against a determined Melton side on Saturday night in the Ballarat Football League. What was looking like an easy Lions win in the first half, became a hard-fought contest with the Lions prevailing 9.16 (70) - 8.8 (56) It was all the Lions in the first half and had they kicked straight, the game would have been all-but-over by the main break. Instead the Bloods trailed by just 29 points despite failing to kick a goal in the first half. After the long break, the Bloods bumped up their workrate and twice got the margin to within a goal in the last quarter. The Lions responded both times to ensure the win. Lions’ coach Rick Horwood said his side’s composure in the last five minutes sealed the four points. “I think we did get out of jail,” he said after the game. “We’d kicked 4.10 up to half-time then they came out and kicked the first two, which put them back in the game and gave them a sniff. “In the third quarter they out-worked us. The one really pleasing thing was the last five minutes of the game when we handled the pressure. It did look dire if we’d given up the lead.” As well as poor goal kicking, the Lions were wasteful with their inside 50s for a second straight week. “It was hard work, very similar to the week before. From about 70-80 metres out we didn’t have efficiency,” Horwood said. “We’ll look at the video and work on it.” Mathew Medcraft kicked three goals for the Lions, including two in the last quarter, while Jack Sheahan got his hands on the ball in the forward line but couldn’t convert. In the first win he has played in in more than 600 days, Grant Valles was voted best-onground. While pleased with the win, the Lions are nursing an injury toll. Jesse Flannery didn’t play much part in the game after suffering concussion in the first quarter, while skipper Andrew Duhau hurt his calf in the second. David Kovacevic suffered a corked thigh in the third quarter and, while he managed to play out the game, he spent a significant part of the third and fourth terms on the bench. Horwood says Duhau will miss this weekend’s clash with reigning premiers Darley. In contention to return to the senior side is vice-captain Adam Short, who played in the reserves on Saturday. “It will be a terrific test to see where we’re really at,” Horwood said of the match. “Obviously if we play like we did against Melton we’ve got no chance.”

and went again. You don’t need a break to reset; you can do it during a game if your players are mature enough. “ The Kangaroos had six players with multiple goals; Ryan Pretty kicked four of them. Zane Williams was best on ground. Elsewhere, Riddell smashed Romsey, Diggers Rest made it two from two with a win over Lancefield, and Woodend-Hesket and Wallan opened their accounts with wins over Rockbank and Melton Centrals respectively. Macedon and Rupertswood played on Monday after Star Weekly went to press. Tara Murray

Promising start for the team that Lena built Just seven weeks from the start of the Riddell District Netball League season, Romsey didn’t have an A-grade side. With the appointment of Lena Way as coach and news that Hope Evans would play for the Redbacks again, the mission to form a team started. Not only did they form a team, they formed one which looks likely to be competitive against most sides. And although they lost 62-39 against reigning premiers Riddell on Saturday, the Redbacks played well enough to encourage Way. The coach said she was thrilled to have put together a really balanced squad. “We have 50 per cent new players,” she said. “We have an experienced [A-grade] line-up with five girls over 30. “Experience counts for everything. Katelyn [Byron], Chelsea [Ross] and Stefanie [Symes] all have Victorian Netball League experience and work well together.” Others in the side are Carolyn McCarthy, returning to the club for the first time since 2003, and Riddell premiership player Lauren Anglin. “Carolyn is extremely fit and comes into her own in the second half of games,” Way said. “In the second half, when errors can come into the game, she actually gets better.” Way said the focus early in the season would be about getting the combinations working together and getting processes correct. The combination of Evans and Ross will be a strong one in the shooting circle. Ross, who is part of the ACU Sovereigns division 1 side, will provide a target and take some of the pressure off Evans, who has done most of the scoring for the Redbacks in recent years. “It’s one of our many strengths,” Way said. “Our defensive end has played elite netball together and are very different players. Katelyn is a real thinker, while the other girls are more physical. “The midcourt is very poised and experienced.” It was a close first quarter in the loss to Riddell before the Bombers extended the lead to seven goals by half-time. The third quarter proved to be the difference as the Bombers shot out to a 21-goal lead. In other results, Diggers Rest opened its account with a 47-28 win over an undermanned Lancefield. Broadford defeated Sunbury Kangaroos 51-18, while Melton Centrals were too good for Wallan, winning 58-26. Macedon and Rupertswood played on Monday. Tara Murray

Sunbury Lions’ Madison Prespakis is joint winner of the Calder Cannons youth girls best and fairest award. Prespakis shared the award with Karly McNieve. The award capped off a good week for Prespakis, who was named in Vic Metro’s leadership group ahead of the youth girls under-18 national championships. Meanwhile, Kelsie Gill was part of the Victorian Women’s Football League side that lost to an Australian Defence Force team. Sheleice Thomas-Cathay and Lesha Lauaki played for Vic Country in the young guns game against Vic Metro, as did Kyneton’s Charlotte Lakey and Kailee Savoia.

Kyneton has two wins from the opening two rounds of the Bendigo Football League. The Tigers had to come from 12 points down at three-quarter time against South Bendigo to grab a 11.22 (88) - 9.12 (66) win. Ben Weightman was best on ground with seven goals.

Sunbury United still has a single win after the first four rounds of the FFV state league 2 north-west season. On Saturday, United lost 2-0 to Essendon Royals. Sunbury’s Carla Krizanic puts her hot streak on the bowls green down to one thing – the enjoyment she’s getting from playing the game. It has been a big 18 months for Krizanic, one of the most in-form bowlers in the nation. Having cemented her spot in the Australian team, she last year won the Australian indoor title and her third Victorian Open. And last week in Bowls Victoria’s state championship, she added a second Champion of Champions gong to her collection. She had previously won that title in 2012. “You have to win your club singles championship and then compete against other club champions in the region,” explained Krizanic after last week’s contest. “Then you go on to the finals against the region champions from across the state. I was determined to win.” In the same week, Krizanic was knocked out in the round of 16 in the state championship women’s singles, eventually won by Kyneton’s Chloe Stewart. But Krizanic was part of the Northern Gateway team that won the women’s fours. She says the side’s other three members, who are all in the Vic junior squad, asked her to play. “I’d never played in the fours at this event before,” she said. “We’re the youngest-ever team to win the event. They all played well and made it easy for me. “I’m enjoying playing bowls again. I’m back playing pennant at Sunbury and we’re going good out there; it’s all pretty exciting.” Next up for Krizanic is playing for Australia against Scotland in June and the Australian Open in the same month. Both events are on the Gold Coast.
