Paintball a hot idea for winter

JESS, 17, AND AIMEE, 17

A day-out at a paintball centre will give Sunbury teenagers a chance to have some fun and forget about Melbourne’s dreary winter weather during the school holidays. Hume council youth services team has organised a visit to the Sunbury paintball centre as part of its winter program. Young people taking part in today’s event will be kitted out in camouflage and protective gear for a series of tasks designed to promote teamwork, leadership and resilience. “[They] will work in teams as they undertake thrilling challenges,” mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou said. The council’s holiday program also includes art competitions, an open mic night, a soccer tournament and visits to the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre and Melbourne Museum. United bid to save VU site By Matt Crossman Victoria University’s former Jacksons Hill campus at Sunbury is a step closer to being saved, with all three levels of government joining calls to protect the historic site. Presenting a community petition with more than 1200 signatures to Parliament, Sunbury MP Josh Bull urged the state government to establish a long-term plan for the 35-hectare precinct, which was built in the 19th century as a mental asylum. “[I’ve asked] for a whole of government approach to deal with what is obviously a long-running and complex issue,’’ Mr Bull said. “I’m very confident we will get a plan for

this site that not only protects its heritage but creates … opportunities for the community and in the educational space as well.” Residential development has been among possibilities floated for the site, which was handed over to VU in the 1990s. The landmark buildings have largely been empty since the university closed its campus in 2009, in parts becoming a target for vandals. The Sunbury Asylum Alliance, which hopes to turn the site into a community hub with jobs training, youth programs and artists, along with Sunbury Residents Association are among groups urging the government against selling the site. Areas used by community groups, including

radio station 3NRG and the Boilerhouse Theatre Company, have been earmarked by Hume council for an arts and cultural precinct. Mr Bull visited the site with Hume councillor Ann Potter, federal McEwen MP Rob Mitchell and members of the asylum alliance last Friday. He said he is confident planning minister Richard Wynne will have a favourable response within 30 days. “It’s going to take some time to ensure that the proper community consultation takes place, understanding not just the arts and culture side of things, but the educational opportunities that are here,” he said. “We want to get it right. We don’t want to rush it. “But I’m certainly confident that, into 2017,

this will be well under way,” Mr Bull said, adding there was “a great deal of frustration” with Victoria University’s stance on the site. “[This will] enable Vic Uni to communicate directly with Mr Wynne,” he said. “I believe they will come to the table on this and work with the government.” Asylum alliance spokeswoman Alison Cunningham welcomed the announcement. “The community certainly wants something done,” she said. “What that is varies, but it’s not housing. That’s the consensus.” Visiting Sunbury last month, Premier Daniel Andrews said the government remained steadfast in its belief that the site should be used for educational purposes.

Labor tipped to hold marginal north-west seats Labor is expected to retain the marginal seats of McEwen and Bendigo when voters head to the polls on Saturday. Deakin University politics lecturer Dr Geoff Robinson said it was going to be close nationally, but he expected Labor to keep the seats covering Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges. He said changing demographics, with growing mortgage belt areas, were unlikely to help Liberal candidates Chris Jermyn and Megan Purcell replace incumbents Rob Mitchell and Lisa Chesters. This was despite the Liberals doing ‘‘quite well’’ in 2013. “Early in the campaign, betting markets seemed to be predicting that the

Liberals would pick up McEwen,” Dr Robinson said, adding that controversies surrounding Mr Jermyn would definitely have an effect. Mr Jermyn was firmly in the national media spotlight after he stood outside Sunbury Community Health on May 28 with signs while opposition leader Bill Shorten committed $2 million for a new child health hub. The Liberal candidate later packed up his listening post and stormed off after being unable to articulate his party’s Medicare policy. Then, large signs above his Sunbury campaign office had to be pulled down after it was revealed they did not meet Hume council bylaws. Concerns were also raised about his

involvement in a media development company, which has lost millions of dollars. “Even putting aside those issues, [Mr Jermyn] doesn’t seem to have much of a local presence,” Dr Robinson said. “Certainly nothing like [former candidate] Donna Petrovich had.” In McEwen, Labor promises have included $2 million towards Sunbury’s planned global learning centre (GLC). Mr Mitchell has also pledged almost $1.5 million for a dementia wing at Gisborne Oaks aged care. The Libs have promised $150,000 to upgrade Sunbury Memorial Hall. Mr Mitchell said health, jobs and access to education remain key issues in Sunbury. “People have suffered from the loss of

airlines, from the automotive closures,” he said. “That’s where things like the GLC will help. “It’s always close, but I think people have been very receptive to Labor’s plans.” Labor’s Bendigo electorate promises included funding for Kyneton District Hospital and Loddon Mallee Community Legal Centre, while the Libs pledged $1 million towards guard rails and skid resistant surfacing on curves on Ashbourne Road at Woodend and $100,000 for a business plan for the proposed Macedon Ranges Indoor Sports Hub. On Friday, punters had Mr Mitchell as $1.05 favourite in McEwen, and Ms Chesters as $1.10 favourite in Bendigo. Matt Crossman

Owners urged to look, lock

(Luke Hemer)

People are being urged to play it smart and lock their houses, sheds and cars following an increase in burglary and theft offences in the Macedon Ranges. Sergeant Geoff Neil said opportunistic thieves continued to strike because too many residents were not following “the standard look, lock and leave” routine. “We do live in a good and safe area, but it would be substantially safer if people would lock up their cars, in particular,” he said. “These thieves are very opportunistic and we need to go out of our way to make sure that opportunity is not there. “Unfortunately, many people do not.” Latest data released by the Crime Statistics Agency show there was an eight per cent increase in Macedon Ranges thefts in the year to March 31, from 558 to 607 offences. Burglaries in the Macedon Ranges went up 11 per cent, from 219 to 245. Sergeant Neil said police expected to charge a man with burglary and drug offences after the highway patrol pulled over a stolen car on the Calder Freeway near Woodend last Monday afternoon. He said a search revealed a ‘‘credible’’ amount of drugs inside the 2012 Nissan Navara twin cab, which was stolen from Melton earlier this month. Numerous items believed to have been taken during recent house burglaries in the area were also seized.

JOHN LAKEY

Town pets take farm toll A Sunbury farmer, who had to shoot a dog that was mauling his sheep, has urged people to take more responsibility for their animals. Dalrymple Road landholder John Lakey said it was becoming a common problem in many growth areas, as housing estates creep closer to long-standing farms. “A lot of people love that they live next to a big farm, but they don’t respect that the farm is a business,’’ he said. Mr Lakey, whose family has owned the farm since 1949, had to put down two heritage-breed rams and fork out $1000 in vet bills after a dog attacked his flock on May 3. “A builder who was doing some work pointed

attacks on animals had been received this financial year, compared to 113 in 2014-15. He warned that people must confine dogs to their property at all times, except when the animals are on a lead or at an off-leash park. “If a dog injures or destroys a farm animal, the dog owner is fully responsible for the cost of this loss,” Mr Waite said. “A farmer is also within their rights to destroy a dog they find attacking their farm animals.” Courts can impose penalties of up to $6200. Mr Lakey said owners could save everybody a lot of trouble by making sure dogs don’t escape. “If you’re going to move to places like Sunbury, Melton, Whittlesea or Bacchus Marsh, you need to take responsibility for what the dog is potentially going to do,” he said.

Mr Lakey said while farmers were legally able to shoot animals attacking livestock, it wasn’t something he wanted to do. “I don’t shoot animals willy-nilly. I’ve returned plenty of animals before. But if they’re mauling sheep that option is removed.” Hume council city infrastructure director Peter Waite said 100 complaints about dog

Organisers of a monthly family market believe its imminent shift into the heart of Sunbury will be good for the town. After extensive talks with stallholders and Hume council, Sunbury Rotary Club has decided to shift the market from the community centre in Elizabeth Drive to outside Sunbury Memorial Hall, as of August. Spokesman Robert Iles said the market’s schedule would also change to the second Saturday of the month, so it does not fall on the same weekend as Gisborne’s large Sunday market. “It’s been on the cards for some years,” he said. “There’s been a lot of discussion and

We’ll be closer to where people are on Saturdays, and that will encourage stallholders and benefit shopkeepers as well.” The last Rotary market at the Elizabeth Drive community centre is on this Saturday, with stalls offering winter woollies, plants, produce, hot food, coffee, car boot sales and lucky door prizes. Park works delay ‘frustrating’ By Matt Crossman Members of a group responsible for planning a $940,000 community park at Kyneton have criticised the length of time it’s taken Macedon Ranges council to start work. Urging residents to sign an online petition, former Kyneton Community Park president Amy Cockroft said nothing had been done since funding was pledged in 2012 and plans drawn up early last year. The project, to be built in Kyneton Botanic Gardens, was handed over to council late 2014.

“It’s just not good enough. People are frustrated,’’ Ms Cockroft said. “It was the last federal election that funding was secured.” Ms Cockroft said the unexplained delay was “insulting” to all the work that had been done by the group. “It was ready to go,’’ she said. “There’s been no communication, which is frustrating.” The council last week said preliminary works, including the removal of 29 trees in advanced states of decline, were about to begin. “We need to undertake these works to ensure the safety of park patrons,” council’s assets and

Council chief executive Peter Johnston said feedback was highly valued. “While we are always striving for improvement, we are also conscious the implementation of rate capping at this time may have impacted on community perceptions and results,’’ he said. Councillors also resolved to sell land in Aitken Street, Gisborne, to Aldi for use as a carpark, despite Cr Russell Mowatt’s efforts to have the block put up for public sale. Aldi is preparing a permit application for a supermarket on an adjoining site.

operations director Dale Thornton said. “These works mark a new beginning for this site, which will be rejuvenated with additional trees and plantings, pathways, park features and interactive play elements for everyone to enjoy.” A report to last week’s council meeting showed overall satisfaction with the council’s performance has slipped from 59 points last year to 55 in the latest community survey. Community satisfaction dropped slightly, from 52 to 51. Scores for categories including advocacy, sealed roads and customer service remain close to average for large rural shires.

There’s not one single moment that Sunbury’s Bonnie Hanlon can look back on and think “that’s when I became an artist”. “It’s just always been a part of what I do,” she says. Hanlon, 30, won the award for emerging visual artist at last week’s Hume Arts awards. She was recognised for a collection of works, including painting, drawing and collage, that explored a range of subjects. “I started taking [art] seriously after I graduated,” the former RMIT fine arts student says. “I felt really lost during uni because there is no one way to be a professional artist, you have to find your own way. “It was after my first solo show that I realised I had to work really diligently if I wanted to keep producing.” Hanlon, who completed VCE at Kyneton Secondary College, says she also realised her art would need to fit in around paid employment.

(Luke Hemer)

Cosmic touch to palette “I [knew I] would have to work as hard as I could, as constantly as I could,” she says. She now manages a framing shop in Fitzroy, allowing her to meet other artists every day. “It’s great … I see a wide variety of artworks.” Hanlon says different mediums “seduce” her at different times. “My joy comes from exploring and working with those materials.” The concept of belonging is one that often ties her works together. “Over the last few years, those ideas have expanded from a personal to a more universal understanding. I work closely with ideas relating to cosmology. It’s a constant source of wonder and amazement for me that these elements coalesced in just the right way for us to ponder how it happened.” See Hanlon’s works at www.bhanlon. blogspot.com Matt Crossman

Fireys warn on a recipe for ruin By Matt Crossman Firefighters have pleaded with residents to play it smart, especially in their kitchens, following the release of new data that shows brigades were called to 52 preventable house fires in Hume in 2015. Figures published on the Safe Mistake Zone website of the MFB and CFA also reveal there were 20 preventable incidents in the Macedon Ranges last year. Sunbury CFA operations officer Mark

Owen said firefighters attending local house fires had noticed a disturbing trend. “A lot of the time, we are finding that people are going outside or even heading off down the street and leaving something on the stove,” he said. “Pots on stoves continue to be a real problem, along with things like deep fryers.” Mr Owen urged residents to get in the habit of switching off appliances and chargers at power points. “We’re often called to fires where there’s been an electrical fault,” he said.

“Things like phones and laptops that have already been charged, even TVs … before going out, if you switch them off at the wall, they are off and your home is safe.” CFA chief officer Joe Buffone warned momentary lapses and bad habits could have

a lifelong impact. He said more people were killed every year by preventable house fires than bushfire emergencies. “There are hundreds of little mistakes that people make every day without thinking,” he said. “Things like overloading your power boards or burning candles too close to curtains … we want people to think twice before putting their homes and their families at risk.” Prevention tips: www.safemistakezone. com.au

Learn life-saving skills Members of the Gisborne and Woodend SES units are more accustomed to answering calls for help than putting one out themselves. But the two units have joined forces for a recruitment drive, looking to replace volunteers who have left due to other commitments, changing jobs and relocation. Woodend crew leader Kevin Morris is urging community-minded people to get along to information sessions being held in July. “We are targeting people from all walks of life around the Macedon Ranges to join our units in operational and support roles,” he said. Current members range from retired residents to young people – but the one constant is that they are all eager to use their emergency response skills to serve their communities. The units regularly respond to emergency and non-emergency incidents, and also take

part in community events and education programs. Gisborne deputy controller Di Dale said training and equipment would be provided. “Our SES volunteers continue to provide an important volunteer service to the communities of the Macedon Ranges and those that pass through its boundaries,” she said. Information sessions will be held at the Woodend unit at 26 Urquhart Street and the Gisborne unit at 33 Robertson Street from 7.30pm on July 18. Details: 5427 2932 or 5428 3037 Matt Crossman

Poll heats up on black spots The bushfire-prone Macedon Ranges will be near the top of a mobile phone black spot priority list under a federal Labor government. MPs Lisa Chesters (Bendigo) and Rob Mitchell (McEwen) joined opposition regional communications spokesman Stephen Jones in Gisborne last Wednesday to promise that areas susceptible to natural disasters would receive greater priority as a result of changes to the administration of a federal scheme. Pledging $120 million nationally, Mr Jones said it was outrageous that the area had been overlooked in the first round of the current government’s program. “This region has been prone to terrible bushfires, loss of life … yet the Turnbull government has not allocated mobile black spot funding,” he said. Ms Chesters said the way the government has structured its program, with one successful application per electorate, it would “take 100 years to fix the problems”. Residents cut off from the outside world during last October’s devastating bushfire near Lancefield demanded major improvements to coverage in the area. People in Benloch and surrounding towns were among those who supported Mr Mitchell’s campaign for up to 30 projects to be funded under the second round of the black spot program. Residents in other areas, such as Woodend and Gisborne South, have also complained, with some forced to change jobs or move

their business due to poor phone and internet coverage. Mr Mitchell said people had had enough. “The McEwen electorate has been 60 per cent burnt out by fires in the last seven years,’’ Mr Mitchell said. “They’re going to upgrade one old tower, and the new one they’ve promised hasn’t even been started. It’s been an abject failure.”

The seat of Bendigo’s Liberal candidate Megan Purcell has met with Macedon residents to discuss coverage, saying a re-elected Liberal government would invest an extra $60 million. “To date, the Turnbull government … is the first government to ever invest a single dollar in addressing this issue.” Ms Purcell also pledged $250,000 to help Kyneton Football and Netball Club upgrade change rooms at Kyneton Showgrounds. “Currently, the women’s change rooms are in the sheep shed, and the juniors have to share one giant shower space,” she said. Ms Purcell joined Senator Mitch Fifield in Woodend to talk up the government’s plans to rollout the National Broadband Network to another 8700 houses in the area. The Libs’ McEwen candidate Chris Jermyn promised more than $2 million in road safety projects, although none were in Sunbury or the Macedon Ranges.

Still fresh after 40 years The family behind a supermarket that has been central to life in Gisborne for 40 years will mark the store’s anniversary early next month. A 1970s-style kitchen has been set up in the foyer of Williamsons FoodWorks ahead of celebrations, which will include a “great bake-off” on July 9. The business was started by John Williamson in 1976 as a Tuckerbag supermarket. Still family run, it has expanded to include FoodWorks stores in Sunbury and Riddells Creek. David Williamson (pictured), who took over from his father about 10 years ago, says his family is proud of its involvement in the community, which includes long-standing support of sports clubs and the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. Shoppers are being invited to a celebration in the Hamilton Street supermarket’s carpark from 10am-2pm on July 9. Included will be a jumping castle and mobile farm.

Ranges rates rise, no loans Rates for the average Macedon Ranges property owner will rise $50 after the council adopted its 2016-17 budget last Wednesday. The budget included an average increase of 2.5 per cent in 2016-17, taking the average bill to $2069. But final bills could fluctuate as 2016 is a revaluation year. Controversial changes to neighbourhood house funding were scrapped as part of a series of minor amendments to the draft document. Councillors reinstated $10,000 for the municipality’s neighbourhood houses, added $50,000 for stage one of a boardwalk footpath in Nursery Road, Macedon, and $30,000 for a detailed design to support grant applications for the New Gisborne Sports Fields project. They also added $30,000 to investigate bicycle parking infrastructure following several budget submissions from cycling groups. The budget remains a balanced one, with changes offset by significantly spending cuts on items such as extensive window replacements at the Gisborne office and a sister city agreement. “It was very hard thing to do,” Cr Jennifer Anderson said. “But we’ve tried to respond to submissions as best we could.” Mayor Graham Hackett said the council had “fully intended” to reinstate its share of funding to neighbourhood houses, which recently warned there would have no choice but to increase charges or cut services. Cr Russell Mowatt was among those who

celebrated efforts to reduce debt while still carrying out significant capital works, with no new loans proposed for 2016-17. “By this time next year, our loan balance will be $10.2 million,’’ he said. “This is well under our own self-imposed limit of $14 million. “At the end of our term, we will be leaving a debt level that is financially sustainable for a future council to work with.”

‘‘

We will be leaving a debt level that is financially - Russell Mowatt sustainable

’’

The budget will bring in $43.59 million in rates and charges to fund $80.5 million in total expenditure, with the remainder to come from other funding sources. Capital works spending is expected to reach $23.50 million, similar to recent budgets, despite the reduced rates increase. Councillors also approved a new environment strategy that will lead to the development of climate change and roadside management plans. Upgrades to Kyneton saleyards will also be investigated after the adoption of a long-term plan developed after extensive consultation with producers, buyers and stock agents. The Riddells Creek Street Festival and Macedon Ranges Sustainability Festival were among events funded under a new grants scheme.

Winter’s icy touch delights It was only a light dusting, but snow that fell on Mount Macedon during last week’s cold snap provided plenty of fun for hundreds of people who flocked to viewing areas including the mount’s memorial cross. Lancefield’s Jos, 8 (pictured), was among those who relished the chance to get their mittens on some of the snow that fell from mid Friday and into Saturday morning. Flurries were also reported in lower lying areas including Kyneton and Malmsbury as temperatures plummeted.

MY PLACE Japanese-born origamist Chieko Hester tells reporter Matt Crossman it wasn’t until she moved to Gisborne that she immersed herself in the art world.

I’ve been in Gisborne about 10 years. My husband was originally from here, so there was that family appeal. We moved from Sydney … I was born in Japan and came to Australia in 1993. How have you found the town? Initially it was a huge shock. Previously I was working in financial institutions in the big city, but when we moved I decided to stay with my two children [now 12 and 10]. That’s actually how I got into what I am doing at the moment [with my art]. Had you had much involvement in art before that time? I had never thought of myself as an artistic person. I’ve always known I had an eye for colour, but really how I got started in art was because of the time I had when I had children. Also, I wanted to get involved in the community as well, and so I joined an art group. That was what pushed me forward. You work with origami. Why did you choose that discipline? I wanted to do something that stood out. It’s not something that many people can do. I try to stick with traditional origami, transforming

paper into shapes and sculptures. I don’t like to cut or groove. Origami is really something that can be done with just a piece of paper. I use lots of nice, bright colours, which is really appealing to people. The feedback I get is that people feel it is something that is really original and interesting. You’re involved in this year’s Macedon Ranges Arts Trail. What are your thoughts on the local arts scene? There’s so much going on. I had friends who were part of the trail and then I met [founder] Nadine Hartnett, who explained it all to me. It was something that really interested me … I’ve found the trail is a great way to engage with other artists and people who are interested in art. What do you like to do in your spare time? Are there places you like to go to for a family outing or bite to eat? I love to eat and drink, so we often like to dine out. We especially like to go to Japanese restaurants and also wineries … I just love red wine. ■ A total of 24 artists and 17 galleries and businesses will be part of this year’s Macedon Ranges Arts Trail, which will include exhibitions, classes and awards. Brochures will be released early next month. Details: 0439 399 838

Pet fashion The smart pack are hot dogs, finds Anna Kosmanovski

(Pictures: supplied)

Apsley cotton dog coat $99.95, from Driza-Bone.

Winter is here and all of us, even our four-legged friends, are feeling the drop in temperatures. It’s important to be aware of this, particularly for certain breeds of dogs and cats and those that are elderly or arthritic, says Nadine Dixon from Geelong Animal Welfare Society. Age and health definitely play a part in increasing the chill factor. “If I had an elderly dog, I would make sure that its bed was an elevated bed,” she says. “If an outside dog, it needs somewhere elevated … off the concrete. “If the dog is old or a little bit arthritic, it’s good to have a jacket on them to keep that warmth in.” Nadine says arthritic and elderly dogs should have regular vet checks. Very cold weather can exacerbate a medical condition. Options such as stretcher beds are good for outside dogs, she says. Some breeds will feel the cold more than others. “The short-coated dogs are very perceptive of cold weather [as are small] dogs like the little Maltese-crosses and shih tzu crosses,” Nadine says. Owners should put coats or jackets on these dogs to help keep them at a “constant, comfortable” body temperature, especially if the dog has had its coat trimmed. “It’s important for them to have a coat after they get their hair cut,” Nadine says. A jacket is an easy solution, especially in winter. Whether a dog has an elevated, warm bed on the verandah or an indoor bed is a personal decision for owners. “It really depends on what people see their dog as,” Nadine says.

“Dogs are companions. They love to be in the household, they love to be a part of the family. And so do cats. Generally, there’s nothing greater for them than to be stretched out in front of a fireplace with their blanket or their jacket on … it’s them being a part of the family in the house.” There’s an extensive range of dog jackets, coats, blankets and fashion accessories available. They range from on-trend tartan to denim jackets, even Driza-Bones. “Some [dogs] have two jackets,” Nadine says. “They have an outside jacket that’s semi or fully waterproof, and they have something knitted or fleecy for indoors.” Cats, meanwhile, will usually shun anything wearable. They’re happier with the coat they were born with. Melissa Hancock, from Petbarn Waurn Ponds, says cats will usually grow a winter coat, or an undercoat, at this time of year. Certain breeds, however, such as the Cornish rex and sphynx, do not and will feel the cold. Nadine suggests cat igloos (“where they can also feel more safe and secure”) as a wintry retreat. She’s found they work well although, she says, some cats will still “squeeze you out of the bed to get under the Doona”. With three separate living zones and a fenced in-ground pool, this Victoriana beauty on about 1017 square metres has family written all over it. White moulded dado panels beneath soft-latte wall paint are found in most rooms, as are quality window furnishings and a mix of terracotta-toned floor tiles and floorboards. Living zones include a lounge room with a heater in a period-style surround; a large family-meals zone and a rumpus room. The kitchen has a walk-in pantry, a stack of white cupboards, dishwasher and 900mm cooker. The large main bedroom, with bay window, has a fireplace, walk-in wardrobe and en suite. Of the four remaining bedrooms, three have walk-in wardrobes and one has an en suite. A huge, gabled pergola joins with another at the back. A double garage and a shed are other features at a property within 30 minutes of the city.

This homestead-style brick veneer on about 1.62 hectares of landscaped gardens and bushland, is all about soaking in an earlier era – pine-lined walls and pitched ceilings with dark exposed beams. Neutral-toned plaster walls in various spots complement the timber, and the living areas of lounge-dining (with wood heater) and family-meals have floors of a different timber. The kitchen has white cabinetry and a long set of windows behind the sink affording leafy views. The main bedroom at one end has mirrored wardrobes and an en suite. At the opposite end, two bedrooms share a bathroom and each has its separate retreat/study. Other features are double glazing, gas ducted heating, air-conditioning and loft storage. There’s a 9x15-metre shed, other sheds, a bore and dam and about 132,490 litres of tank water. Front and back verandahs are designed for kicking back.

This is a mighty fine spread for a family, with the house providing heaps of space and the requisite two separate living zones. The block of about 2000 square metres has room to run young legs ragged, with space left over for perhaps a chook run, productive gardens and a big shed. Both living areas are large, the carpeted lounge room has a gas heater and there are pine floorboards in the family-meals area. The kitchen has loads of storage and electric cooking appliances. Of the four bedrooms, the main has built-in wardrobes and en suite, two others have walk-in wardrobes and the other a built-in. The family room opens to a covered pergola and there’s an integrated double garage. Gas ducted heating and 20 solar panels are welcome inclusions. Having Lancefield Park a five-minute walk away and St Mary’s Primary School a short bike ride away are other family-friendly perks.

This house on about 1051 square metres has a showstopper outdoor entertainment area and fab views towards Mount Macedon. The palette of greys, charcoals and whites is harmonious and on-trend and the floor plan allows for either separation or interaction. Four carpeted bedrooms include the big main, with retreat space, mirrored built-in wardrobes and a walk-in, and a sleek en suite with dual basins. There’s also a study. Living areas are a theatre room and a family-meals area around the all-white modern kitchen and all its mod-cons. Ducted heating, refrigerated cooling, double-glazing, alarm, video intercom and ducted vacuum are internal features. An integrated alfresco zone looks out to a glass-framed, solar-heated swimming pool. A double garage with internal access, a large shed, 5kW solar system and 3000-litre water tank are great inclusions.

SUNBURY 15 Spavin Drive, 3429 4

Leading Real Estate: 9744 2244 Price: $545,000 – $585,000

In a leafy enclave, this spacious abode is less than 200 metres from pretty Spavin Lake, where rainbow trout are known to prefer spinners to worms, water birds feel right at home, dogs can run around off leash and walking trails and a playground are close by. Sound like a neighbourhood made for a family? It is – and the house and yards are similarly fashioned to appeal to the “likes” of parents and kids. The house has the requisite pair of living zones: an open,

carpeted lounge room where adults can escape the kids and a large family-meals hub where those kids can watch a movie. Or perhaps vice versa. The kitchen is streamlined, with cupboards in a shade of soft-latte complementing a darker shade on walls, charcoal laminate benchtops, white splashback tiles and stainless-steel appliances including a dishwasher. The main bedroom is across the way from the lounge room and has twin walk-through

wardrobes and an en suite with all-white tiles and fittings sparkling against soft-latte walls. Three more bedrooms with wardrobes are along the second-level hallway, as are the gleaming main bathroom, separate toilet and the laundry. A study is just inside the front door. The living hub opens to an elevated, covered deck with steps down to a big expanse of sealed aggregate where kids will have a ball on scooters. A tall eucalypt

shades a spot for seating. Behind a sturdy fence, there’s a sunken lawn area where a garden shed sits. Gardens are beautifully lit at night and there are vegie and herb boxes. Other features include ducted heating, evaporative cooling, vertical blinds on all windows and a lock-up double garage with rear access to a large concrete area for caravan/trailer parking. SPORT Sunbury on a jet plane, cruising at height

Emma Mahady top-scored on Sunday. (Shawn Smits)

The challenges keep getting thrown at the Sunbury Jets, and the Big V women’s division 1 team keeps responding. Undefeated and on top of the ladder, the Jets are leagues ahead of rivals. In the past two weeks alone, they’ve beaten the third and fourth-placed teams by a combined 74 points. On Sunday, the Jets celebrated the return of head coach Kennedy Kereama from Europe where he’d been on duty for the New Zealand women’s national team. With the Tall Ferns failing to qualify for the Olympics, Kereama will be back down under for the rest of the season. Before Sunday’s match, assistant coach Lisa Townsend said the playing group had responded well despite the mid-season coaching changes. “We have very similar coaching styles and we’ve had a process in place, regardless of who’s coach,” she said. “The girls could coach themselves if

something happened to us … it’ll be a male voice instead of a women’s voice. “We always knew he would be back at this time. “If he’d been going to Rio, he would have been back for one or two matches before heading back to New Zealand.” It was a winning return for Kereama with the Jets comprehensively beating Western Port 89-41. Defensively, the Jets were strong, with 19 steals and six blocked shots, compared to Western Port’s two steals and one block. Five players reached double figures, Emma Mahady top-scoring with 18 points. Among those reaching double figures was Jess Bygate, in her second game back after missing out on the New Zealand team for the Olympic trials. Townsend said it was good to have her back in the team and fully fit. “Jess was disappointed, as anyone would be not making the team.

“She’s been able to experience the national team set-up, and she’s blessed to have had that opportunity.” The Jets will be without local young gun Naomi Stevens for the rest of the year. Stevens tore her ACL last month. “It’s a big loss for both the women’s and youth girls’ squad,” Townsend said. “It’s a shame as she’s been doing so well and going great guns.” As for the rest of the season, Townsend says she’d love to see the Jets go through undefeated. “I was talking to the players about having the opportunity to be part of something special and go through unbeaten. “I was part of a winning team at Dandenong years ago and we won 56 games straight, including two premierships. “Being part of a group that goes undefeated adds to the glory. I think this can be a special group.” Tara Murray

Coach takes on double challenge By Tara Murray Jessy Carroll always wanted to coach East Sunbury Cricket Club but wasn’t sure the timing was right. He knew he could do the job but wasn’t sure whether the club wanted him to take the role as he couldn’t guarantee he could be a playing coach. One conversation with club officials quickly put all Carroll’s doubts behind him. “I said I wasn’t 100 per cent sure I could play and they said, ‘That’s fine, we’d rather have you around as coach and around the club than not at all’,” Carroll said last week. “It was good to hear I had the backing of everyone and I was a bit more confident when they asked me that.” Carroll, 25, was always seen as next coach of the Thunder. He was assistant coach to Mark Hourigan in 2014-15 and was meant to help coach last season when he returned from an overseas holiday. But everything changed when he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s B-cell lymphoma while in London. His family, the East Sunbury Sporting group and the whole Sunbury community got together to raise money to help bring Carroll home. Carroll says his battle has been “up and down” but adds that the support he’s received has been mind-blowing. And he says his diagnosis isn’t going to stop him doing the things he wants to do. “There’s no point putting your life on hold; we all die one day,” he says. “Do as much as you can while you can. I wasn’t going to put my hand up as I couldn’t commit to playing and coaching. “I’m 100 per cent on the coaching side of things but still not sure if I’ll play “I’m waiting on a few tests and, hopefully, I can get over it and get out and play. “Leading off the field is half the job. You want to lead on the field as well. That’s when all the pressure comes and you can really stand up and help the younger guys.” As much as the club wants Carroll to be with it, he wants to be there, too. “They don’t treat you any differently down here. Some people talk to you differently when you’re sick, but at the club everyone still has a laugh and jokes around with you. Banter always lifts your spirits.” Carroll takes on the job after a disappointing season for the Thunder, which finished on the bottom of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association B-grade ladder.

Carroll says the timing is right now to take over and give East Sunbury a fresh start. “I learnt a bit in the first year with Mark and we made the grand final and only just lost,” he said. “Hopefully that was just one bad year. I watched a bit last year and there were things I thought I could change. “I want to build a tight squad that will hang around with each other and have a close bond off the ground. Hopefully, success comes with that.” Carroll says he hopes being a youthful coach will also be helpful with a young squad. “I’m not that much older than them and I’m someone they can come and talk to,” he said. “Most of their problems – like if they want to go to another club to further test their skills – I can handle that as I’m just past that part

of my life. Hopefully I can influence younger players.” Carroll says that as well as applying his own spin on coaching, he will use skills he has learned from his last two coaches, Hourigan and Steve Grey. Grey, who coached Carroll at Sunbury United and East Sunbury, is coaching United this season. It’s a match-up Carroll keenly anticipates. “I watched Steve coach and brought in things he did,” he said. “I trained with United when I first started cricket under Steve and the mentality was ‘no pain no gain’. I’ve followed that my whole life in cricket. “I saw how he did it and took a bit from him and saw how Mark did it and took a bit from him, so just the aspect of growing the youth is what I want to do.” Carroll says the club has started talking to potential recruits but is focused on building from within. “Hopefully, we can get a bit of confidence into them early. “I’m looking at a couple of new players but I don’t want to push the envelope too far. “I want to build a side that will be together for three or four years, moving up together as a group. “I’ll be around 28 or 29 then and so will a lot of the other boys and we’ll have a lot of cricket under our belts.”

Chance throws up a star By Tara Murray With not much competition in Victoria, Sunbury’s Oluwaremi Olalekan was unsure how she would go at the Australian National Judo Championships earlier this month. After urging by Victorian team coaches to compete in the national championships for the first time, Olalekan won both her events. She took out the junior women’s 78kg-plus division and the senior women’s division in the same weight category. She won both the best-of-three grand finals, in two rounds. “I was very happy because I won both categories,” the 15-year-old said. “I have only been doing it for four years, and I was competing against competitors who were more experienced and heavier than me. “In the senior category, everyone was between 20 and 30.” She said having the support of her coaches in both Sunbury and Victorian squads was a massive boost. Olalekan trains at Kaizen Judo in Sunbury. “My coach at Sunbury said I should try out for the Victorian squad and then the coaches there said I should try out,” the Salesian College student said. “Certainly helps with the confidence. “They have done a lot in judo, and one of the coaches has competed for Australia.” Olalekan, who is also known as Remi, wants to continue testing herself against others. She’s come a long way for someone who just went along when her brother was looking to join. “I want to compete internally and get as far as I can go,” the young athlete said. “Maybe look at going to the Commonwealth Games …”

Wayward Lions hand win to grateful East Point Poor kicking and equally poor decision-making cost Sunbury Lions dearly in a loss to East Point in the Ballarat Football League on Saturday. Looking to cement their spot in the top two, the Lions were left to rue missed opportunities which allowed East Point to steal the 12.9 (81) 10.17 (77) win. The Lions had the best of it early at Clarke Oval and led by as many as 18 points in the first half. The second half was a tale of two very different quarters, the Kangaroos kicking goals while the Lions missed, In the end, it cost the Lions the game and handed them their third loss of the season.

Lions coach Rick Horwood described the game as “one that got away”, with his players’ performance “poor”. “You’re not going to win many games kicking 2.12 in the second half,” he said. “Our execution by foot was really poor. It was a disappointing result. If we’d kicked one more goal, we’d have won. “It wasn’t that they won the game; we lost the game. It’s a hard pill to swallow as we had so many opportunities.” Horwood said while goalkicking was poor, delivery into the forward 50 was equally bad. “Our ball transition was terrible between the 50s. We had 38 turnovers heading into our forward 50. Our field kicking was atrocious.

“When we were getting shots at goal, they were being taken in the right spot. In the last 10 minutes, we had players running into open goal and hitting the post.” Horwood said the ruck dual between David Kovacevic and Paul Koderenko was one of the day’s highlights. Kovacevic, skipper Andrew Duhau, midfielder Alik Magin and Josh Guthrie were the Lions’ best players. The coach said it was pleasing to see Guthrie play his first game in the seniors this year, and he was impressed with the form of Corey Hansen. The loss dragged the Lions from second to fourth on the ladder.

They are now one of four teams on 28 points. Another, North Ballarat City, takes on the Lions in Ballarat this week. “You have to beat the sides around you on the ladder,” Horwood said. “We dropped a game against a team below us, which was disappointing. It’s these games that will decide where you finish at the end of the year.” The Lions’ A-grade netballers had a tough day, losing 41-25 to East Point. A slow start proved to be the Lions’ downfall … they trailed 12-3 and 22-9 at stages of the first half. The Lions sit fourth on the ladder. Tara Murray

Bombers limp home By Tara Murray Riddell produced a sub-par performance but was able to sneak home against Macedon in Riddell District Netball League on Saturday. Filling top-three spots before the game, the teams were looking forward to a match of virtual equals. And there was little between them all day, the Bombers eventually winning 39-38. Their coach, Jarrad Walker, was relieved to get the points while disappointed in some regards with the performance. “Macedon were happy with how they played – it was a physical game,” he said. “You can see they do a lot of training together. “I wasn’t happy with our game. We made a lot of turnovers and couldn’t get our connections going. This is the type of game we need … we won’t have another until just before the finals.” Walker said it wasn’t until the last quarter that the Bombers managed to get some flow in their game – but they couldn’t turn it into scoreboard

pressure. Despite the disappointment, he saw a lot of positives. Managing three players with injuries and introducing a new player meant lots of positional changes for Riddell. Tarryn Munro, who plays in Victorian Netball League division 1, had her first game with the club and will provide another option in the mid-court. She comes on board as Danielle Wilson heads overseas, not to return until just before the finals. “We knew there would be turnovers with introducing a new player,” Walker said. “I’m glad I got Tarryn in to play in a game like this. Having her released Lauren Close back into defence.” Close was best on court on Saturday, despite managing an ankle injury. Another standout was Meikah Johns. Walker said Johns, one of the youngest players in the team, was now his go-to wing-defence player.

Walker said he was hopeful the impact of VNL commitments on his players would decrease, with most VNL matches now played midweek. The exception will be the VNL grand finals, which will be held the same weekend as the first weekend of RDNL finals. “We have a good opportunity to settle down, which we haven’t had with VNL, interleague, Queen’s Birthday weekend and Rockbank not having a team [creating a bye],” Walker said. “It [VNL grand finals] could potentially affect a couple of players, but we’re confident in our B-grade and under-19 players stepping up. “We just need to make sure we finish top two and get a double chance.” Elsewhere, ladder leader Rupertswood suffered a shock loss to Melton Centrals, Lancefield was too good for Sunbury Kangaroos, Diggers Rest defeated Wallan, and Broadford proved too strong for WoodendHesket.

A workmanlike performance from the Sunbury Kangaroos was enough to take the points against Lancefield on Saturday. In a Riddell District Football League game important for both teams, it was the Kangaroos who were able to find avenues to goal. They led early at Boardman Reserve and never really looked like losing, although the Tigers refused to go away. Lancefield wasn’t helped when star forward Jon Kent suffered a heavy knock in the third quarter and couldn’t play out the game. The Kangaroos prevailed, 12.9 (81)6.8 (44). Kangaroos coach Jarrod Dixon said it was good to get back on the winning list after two successive losses. He said it was a better performance than the week before when they pushed then-unbeaten Macedon before going down by 20 points. “Most of our stats last week indicated that we won the game, but we didn’t really,” Dixon said. “So we worked on our contested ball and the stats will reflect that. We were a little bit cleaner and our pressure acts helped … that along with the pressure from the forward line was massive. “It was a slow start and today was an unemotional game for both sides. It just turned into a workmanlike game. We got the win and the four points, and we’re happy with that.” One area the Kangaroos have to work on is inside 50 as, for a second straight week, they were wasteful kicking to their forwards. “We got our key indicators and we got the [inside 50] entries we wanted,” Dixon said. “Sometimes we’ve just got to lower our eyes and look deep.” Tom Ellard kicked four goals for the Kangaroos, while Kent kicked three for the Tigers. The Kangaroos’ Matthew Wallace was adjudged best on ground, while small men Mitch Trimboli (two last-quarter goals) and Tierone Cuffe worked hard all day. Jordan Baumgartner was another handy player for the Kangaroos, showing he’s just as capable in midfield and up forward as he is in his normal position in defence. The win propelled the Kangaroos to fourth on the ladder, leading a pack of four teams on 20 points. The Tigers slipped to ninth spot. The Kangaroos now face Riddell, who handed Macedon its first loss of the season, to leave Diggers Rest as the only undefeated team after a win over Wallan.
