Gridlock fears for Gisborne Gisborne residents have thrown their support behind a push for a truck bypass of the fast-growing regional centre, with an increasing number of heavy vehicles using roads from Melton and Bacchus Marsh. Congestion on major thoroughfares, including Brantome, Robertson and Hamilton streets, at the intersection of Station and Saunders roads and the intersection of Melbourne and Kilmore roads has led Macedon Ranges councillor Russell Mowatt to call for development of a new route to divert trucks away from Gisborne’s centre. Welcoming the council’s release of a study including recommendations to ease congestion, extend bus services and add cycling and parking infrastructure, Cr Mowatt said increased traffic from 2009 to this year had greatly exceeded predictions. “The previous 2009 study assumed an overall average increase of 30 per cent,” he said. “However, the latest data comparisons show an average traffic increase of 42.57 per cent.” Cr Mowatt said major housing developments meant tens of thousands more vehicles would be using Gisborne roads in the near future. “Time is of the essence,” he said. “The state government and VicRoads need to work in partnership with council and the community to provide appropriate funding to address a number of hotspot roads identified in the study.” The study reveals that about 726 heavy vehicles are using Bacchus Marsh-Gisborne Road and Robertson Street every day. More than 443 are travelling on Station Road and the Gisborne-Melton Road.
“This combined total represents 1169 heavy vehicle movements per day,” Cr Mowatt said. He said action was needed before “we drown in the congestion, gridlocks and frustration of finding parking”. “We also cannot wait another five to 10 years to start this work for a bypass,” he added. “We must start the conversation now.” Gisborne resident Michelle Minchew recently moved from Cherry Lane after 14 years, in part due to the spike in truck numbers.

- Michelle Minchew “The noise had changed. Honestly, it’s just 24/7,” she said. “It wakes you up at night.” Gisborne Roads Group chairman Bruce Overall said the number of heavy vehicles travelling from the western districts, Melbourne Airport and the western suburbs to areas such as Bendigo and Elmore was already a major problem. “So often, they all meet up in Aitken Street and everybody has trouble getting through,” he said. “Without a bypass, Station Road will be totally gridlocked within two years.” VicRoads regional director Mal Kersting said the authority would continue to work with the council as part of any review. Submissions on the council’s study close July 29. Details: www.mrsc.vic.gov. au/yoursay

Voters dispel ‘CFA effect’ fears By Matt Crossman The election result may be in doubt federally, but voters in the central Victorian seats of McEwen and Bendigo were clear in their assessment of their candidates on Saturday. Claims that the Victorian CFA dispute would threaten Labor’s hold largely failed to materialise locally, with incumbent MPs Rob Mitchell and Lisa Chesters attracting swings of 8.32 and 2.52 per cent respectively. Both of the previously marginal electorates were declared before 9pm. Ms Chesters, who was greeted by loud cheers as she claimed victory at Bendigo’s Trades Hall,
said the win meant it was 20 years since the Liberal Party had held the seat. “The Liberals tried to politicise the CFA, they tried to divide our community,” she said. “They tried to say this seat was in play because of the CFA issue and they were wrong.” Ms Chesters said Bendigo voters were ‘‘people who stand up for a fair go”. “We are people in this electorate who don’t want to see vulnerable people left behind,” she said. “What gave us the big swing tonight was the fact that people want a government that’s going to stand up for Medicare, that’s going to make sure our schools get decent funding and that’s
going to make sure we all have a job, a job we can count on.” Ms Chesters secured 53.78 per cent of the two-party vote, although Liberal candidate Megan Purcell picked up swings at some polling booths, including Kyneton, Kyneton East, Macedon, Malmsbury, Mount Macedon and Woodend. In a social media post on Sunday, Ms Purcell said she was proud to have run an “efficient, clean and positive campaign”. “My election commitments will be delivered and my promises kept,” she said. Having previously held the seat by a few hundred votes, Mr Mitchell stormed to victory
in McEwen, attracting 58.47 per cent of the two-party vote to embattled Liberal candidate Chris Jermyn’s 41.53. Mr Jermyn was firmly in the national media spotlight after standing outside Sunbury Community Health on May 28 with signs while Opposition Leader Bill Shorten committed $2 million for a new child health hub but was unable to articulate his party’s Medicare policy. Then large signs above his Sunbury campaign office had to be pulled down after it was revealed they did not meet Hume council bylaws. Concerns were also raised about his involvement in a media development company, which has lost millions of dollars.

Woodend CFA needs a few good men, or women, to ensure its two trucks and a pumper are able to turn out for incidents. First lieutenant Mike Dornau says the brigade is keen to hear from community-minded drivers who have a medium rigid licence or above. “A few of our experienced truck drivers have moved out of the area, so we’re putting out the call for people to help us out while we train up other members,” he said. Volunteers will be given skills training. Details: 0419 870 601 or www.woodendcfa.org

Safety on a busy stretch of Sunbury’s Gap Road will be greatly improved, with work to install traffic lights starting last week. A crossing will also be installed near the intersection of Gap Road and Elizabeth Drive, giving pedestrians a safer route to bus stops and a nearby shopping centre that includes a supermarket and cafes. Shopping centre spokesman Mick Sheehan said that with about 18,000 cars using Gap Road daily, the long-awaited project would make the lives of people moving around on foot much easier. “It can be a very hard spot to cross,’’ he said. “This is going to make things a lot safer.” Sunbury-based Hume councillors Ann Potter and Jack Medcraft were among those who welcomed the start of works, coming after years of lobbying from residents. Cr Medcraft said people had long feared that it was only a matter of time before there was a major accident at the site. “With all that traffic on that stretch, it’s been a nightmare,” he said. “It’s one that’s been raised with councillors by many people for many years. “I’m sure there’ll be a little bit of disruption to traffic in the short term, but in the end it’s something that’s going to be very welcome.” A $6.4 million project to install traffic lights, turning lanes and crossings at the nearby intersection of Gap Road and Horne Street is expected to start mid to late next year.

Eagles take to the skies A trio of Sunbury basketballers are fine-tuning their crossover dribbles and post-up moves ahead of Basketball Australia’s national club championships. Former Kismet Park Primary School pupils Imogen Wardley, Abby Hildebrand and Jade Dunne (pictured) will join their Diamond Valley teammates at the titles in Maitland, NSW, from September 26 until October 1. Diamond Valley, aka the Eagles, was among 24 under-14 teams around Australia invited to take part. All three year 7 girls are on student athlete scholarships at Maribyrnong Secondary College.
They represented Vic Metro in this year’s Southern Cross Challenge and also compete in Sunbury’s domestic competition. Imogen and Abby play for Superoos, while Jade plays for Rupertswood. Imogen’s father, Daniel, says the Eagles have started a crowdfunding campaign to help families meet expenses. “Their team was invited after topping the state … to play in a national tournament like this is sure going to be a great opportunity.” Donations: goo.gl/9hPWLS Matt Crossman

Diabetes data prompts action Efforts to revive a Sunbury support group are under way after new data revealed more than 11,500 Hume residents have diabetes, well above the national average. Diabetes Victoria findings show that 6.1 per cent of residents in the municipality have the serious and complex condition, compared to 5.3 per cent across Australia. Rates in the Macedon Ranges are much lower, at 4.2 per cent. Bulla’s Bob Laidler, who helped run the Sunbury Diabetes Support Group until it went into recess earlier this year, said National Diabetes Week (July 10-16) was a great opportunity for people to familiarise themselves with risk factors for type 2 diabetes. These include weight, inactivity, family history, race, age and high blood pressure. “Unfortunately, many people can be a bit blase,” Mr Laidler said. “They don’t realise the potentially serious consequences.” Mr Laidler says he has managed his disease with medication, a balanced diet and frequent exercise for more than a decade. When he joined the Sunbury group soon after he was diagnosed, about 30 members turned up at its regular meetings. But with numbers dwindling, the group stopped meeting earlier this year. Now, with the help of organisations including the Goonawarra Medical Centre, former members are trying to get it up and running again. “It’s a shame because those meetings gave you insight into how other people manage their
diabetes,” Mr Laidler said. “It made you aware that you’re not on your own.” He said people not properly educated about their condition faced real dangers, including heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, vision loss and even amputation. “I was at the doctors and casually mentioned I’d had some pins and needles in my feet,” Mr Laidler said. “Straight away he said, ‘That’s not good. You could be losing feeling in your legs’.
‘‘
It’s an example of how a small thing can easily - Bob Laidler become … big
’’
“He’ll keep a close eye on it, but it’s an example of how a small thing can easily become something big. Because I’m aware of what’s going on – the risks – I mention those changes straight away.” Sunbury Community Health has a diabetes educator who can also help people manage their condition. A spokeswoman for the centre said things people could do to prevent diabetes included eating nutritious meals and smaller portions. Increasing physical activity and taking steps to reduce stress were also recommended. A new digital awareness campaign launched by Diabetes Australia is designed to show people who already have diabetes how they can live full and active lives. Have your say
As a parent of a nine-year-old daughter diagnosed with selective mutism anxiety disorder, I know how important it is to have easily-accessible sporting facilities. My daughter is fortunate enough to play basketball for Woodend Hawks, representing the Macedon Ranges Basketball Association. She is one of the many kids in our community who struggles every day trying to live a ‘normal’ life. The confidence she has gained playing and training with this team is immense, and I do not say that lightly. To see the transition from a child who barely says a word in the classroom to an assertive, strong girl on the court is, at times, extraordinary. However, I know that if I become complacent with managing Sarah’s path through life, or the opportunity to be part of a team is not available, she will become one of the thousands of teenage girls who simply give up sport and all the positive health benefits, both physical and mental, that come with it. We live in a cold climate. The thought of playing a sport that trains and plays outside over the winter months is not appealing to the majority of the kids living in our community. Please help us support our kids by supporting the community initiative to build the Macedon Ranges Regional Sports Hub. Peta Rankin, Woodend
Getting around Gisborne
… it’s good for everyone
Council would like Gisborne residents to share their thoughts on managing future traffic movement in the town following the development of the 2016 Gisborne Movement Network Study.
We have all felt the swell of support from the community for the Macedon Ranges Regional Multi-Sports Indoor Hub.
The case presented is clear. It includes promoting health and social issues, addresses inequality in sports funding, highlights the importance of community connections, promotes tourism and involves nine towns in the region. The proposal is driven by the community. Many in the shire have been hoping for a central indoor facility such as this for many years. It will assist the community to stay connected, engaged and active. Janet Pearce, Woodend

Look back in safety, says cop By Matt Crossman Cameras and sensors are no substitute for common sense – that’s the message from the Macedon Ranges’ top traffic cop after data revealed the area was among the worst for crashes involving reversing. Latest figures from the RACV show 22 per cent of insurance claims involving Macedon Ranges drivers between 2010 and 2015 involved reversing collisions. The 1087 claims were the third highest in the central highlands and goldfields areas. Ballarat led the way with 2206, ahead of Bendigo (1899).
Hepburn was fourth with 231, while Loddon was ninth with just 14. Macedon Ranges highway patrol’s Sergeant Geoff Neil said most reversing incidents happened in supermarket carparks. He said while sensors and cameras in newer vehicles were a “nice aid” they should not stop people from turning their heads and looking over their shoulders. ‘‘You can have as many cameras as you like, but there’s nothing like having a look yourself,” Sergeant Neil said. “Cameras are an aid, not primary protection.” RACV insurance general manager Paul
Northey said reversing collisions accounted for 24 per cent of claims statewide. “You can’t turn back time, so take care when reversing,’’ he said. “The average cost of these collisions rose from about $1800 in 2011 to more than $2600 in 2015.” RACV recently released its annual Reversing Visibility Index, which tested 240 vehicles on a scale of zero-to-five stars to help motorists choose a model with better rear visibility. This year, 65 per cent of vehicles tested scored five stars, compared with 53 per cent in 2015. RACV has welcomed the improvements in
reversing visibility technology in vehicles, but has called on manufacturers to have cameras included as standard in all models. “Motorists who are not ready to upgrade their car to one that has a reversing camera could consider having a camera or sensors retro-fitted, which could improve the visibility of the car to a five-star standard,” Mr Northey said. “[But] even if your car has parking sensors or a reversing camera fitted, you should not rely on these alone.” – with Bendigo Advertiser
Strength from sharing The success of a free program helping families isolated by a loved one’s drug use has led to the creation of a monthly support group. Sunbury Community Health (SCH) drug and alcohol team leader Jim Carlton said residents who had taken part in recent Action for Recovery courses were looking forward to the group’s first meeting on July 11. The peer-based group will give parents, siblings and other relatives the chance to discuss their issues on the first Monday of every month. “For many, the chance to meet with people who know exactly what they are going through will be life-changing,” Mr Carlton said. The group will focus on the wellbeing of families, providing strategies to cope with addictive behaviours and giving members an opportunity to share stories and learn from each other in a non-judgmental setting.
Its launch follows a series of Action for Recovery courses delivered by the Self Help Addiction Resource Centre. This program covered topics such as boundaries, guilt, worry, communication and acceptance. It was organised after more than 70 people attended a community forum that focused on problems caused by the rising use of crystal methamphetamine (ice). Further meetings will be held at SCH, in Macedon Street, from 6-8pm on the first Monday of every month. Hub’s a handball closer By Matt Crossman A Macedon father of six has joined the growing chorus of residents calling for federal, state and local governments to support a centrally located indoor sports hub. As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, residents and organisations are being urged to get behind the Macedon Ranges Regional Sports Hub group’s campaign for a six-court stadium, with existing facilities outdated and bursting at the seams. With his family involved in sports including football, futsal and netball, Simon Bishop said the proposed complex would be life-changing. “My eldest is turning 12 and my youngest is one,” he said. “I’m involved in three teams myself and, at the moment, we’re all over the place. A central hub would make a huge difference for families like ours.” Mr Bishop said the proposal ‘‘makes good sense’’. “In the past, it’s been every country town for itself. This is a range of sports and schools across the whole shire coming together, and they can all benefit.” Bendigo Labor MP Lisa Chesters has proposed a working group of federal, state and local government, and community representatives, to take the project to the next stage. Liberal candidate Megan Purcell promised $100,000 for the development of a business case in the lead-up to last Saturday’s election. Basketball Victoria and Netball Victoria support the project, which would include administration, storage, catering and bar facilities. After meeting stakeholders and council representatives, sports hub spokeswoman Tamara Collins said a compelling case had been put forward. ‘‘The community support is clearly there,’’ she said. ‘‘We just need to get

that in-principle support from council so we can go to other levels of government and take the next step.’’ Cr John Connor, who attended a recent meeting, said the sports hub group had done a great job putting together a ‘‘terrific proposal’’. The group’s proposal shows access to indoor courts in the area is poor. The municipality is

ranked 46th in regional Victoria, with one indoor court for every 3675 people. Basketball Victoria’s facilities and government relations manager Wayne Bird said this made the hub an important project. “This region is under-resourced significantly,’’ he said. “The concept the group wants to develop is unique … [it] would be a drawcard.”
Council clarifies park delay Detailed planning and a lengthy heritage process were among the reasons for delayed construction of a community park in Kyneton, according to Macedon Ranges council. Responding to concerns about the length of time it has taken for work to start on the $940,000 park at Kyneton Botanical Gardens, community wellbeing director Karen Stevens said a lot of work had taken place behind the scenes. “In the past 18 months, council has worked with landscape architects to translate concept design into detailed designs ready for construction,” she said. “[It’s also] worked with Heritage Victoria to obtain the required permit to proceed with works … a lengthy process.” As reported by Star Weekly, former Kyneton Community Park president Amy Cockroft said nothing had been done since funding was pledged in 2012 and plans drawn up early last year. The project was handed over to council early 2015. Ms Stevens said efforts to select a supplier for major play features, including a ropes course and giant swing, and a donation drive to obtain items such as tractors, rocks and timber for displays, had also taken time. Preliminary work, including the removal of 29 trees in advanced states of decline, will start this week. It is expected to be finished in six months. Matt Crossman

Bendigo trains back on track By Matt Crossman Passengers on the Bendigo line have welcomed the long-awaited return of all V/Line services after almost six months of disruption and inconvenience. Two new peak services were added last week as the state government seeks to address a large increase in the number of people travelling on the line. Woodend commuter Robert Knight said that while V/Line’s dramas had caused great frustration since January, passengers were
happy to have all services back on track. Service reductions, put in place due to faster than normal wheel wear, led to large numbers of services being cancelled or replaced by buses, while tens of thousands of refunds were handed out to affected customers. “We’re so much better off than we were,’’ Mr Knight said. “It’s back to being reliable and punctual. It’s just good to be back on the train.” Mr Knight said the overcrowding of some services, caused by people trying to avoid having to catch replacement buses, had eased.

Step forward for walkers A new shared path that will connect a crossing on Barringo Road, New Gisborne, with Holy Cross Primary School and Gisborne Montessori School is expected to improve safety and encourage healthy activity. The path, funded by Macedon Ranges council and health promotion charity Victoria Walks, is expected to be ready for use in July. Other works being completed include the reconstruction of Burke and Wills Track near the intersection of Mission Hill Road in Baynton, the widening of Sandy Creek Road in Riddells Creek and resurfacing of the intersection of Kilmore Road and Jacksons Creek Way in Gisborne. Pedestrian safety will be improved with new footpaths on Fersfield Road, Gisborne, and Brooke Street, Woodend.

“It’s been school holidays … but things are more or less back to usual,” he said. “The extra service each way will give people a bit of flexibility, too.” Latest V/Line data shows Bendigo line punctuality increased to 89.7 per cent in May, up from 79.4 in March and 64.2 per cent at

the height of the public transport crisis in January. Also spruiking the start of a limited rail service within Bendigo, Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said the new peak-hour trains would serve 440 extra passengers every day. More than 2.5 million trips were taken on the Bendigo line last year, about 160,000 more than the year before. “Every service is back on the tracks. We’ve restored the funding to V/Line and we’ve set out a long-term plan for better public transport in regional Victoria,” Ms Allan said.

MY PLACE Long-time Sunbury Lawn Tennis Club coach, committee member and publicity officer David Theuma was recently recognised with a lifetime achievement award. He tells Matt Crossman about his time at the club. What’s your tie to the area and how long have you lived here? I’ve been coaching and involved with Sunbury Lawn Tennis Club for 25 years. How did you first get involved? The club was advertising for a coach, I applied and got the job. I’d been coaching about five years at that point. I was a player in my younger days … I was second in the state in my age group when I was 16. What are the club’s greatest achievements? It has been transformed to the 10th biggest in membership in Victoria. It’s gone from having 16 grass courts that could be used only six months of the year, to 12 all-weather courts with lights and four grass courts. And a new clubhouse will be built in the next year. What do you enjoy most about coaching? I love watching children progress and develop into playing competition tennis. How has the town changed since you arrived?
(Damjan Janevski)
The number of people has doubled and there’s a lot more infrastructure. What do you do in your spare time? Play golf and go to the football … I’m a Pies supporter.

Get your winter ARMOUR on Winter is here and with it come the sniffles, coughs and scratchy sore throats. But what many of us don’t know is that the “cold and flu season” is a myth, as the viruses live through every season – summer, autumn, winter or spring. According to experts, without knowing or realising it, our immune system is fighting the battle against colds and flu every day. Scientists say that colds are considered a mild illness in comparison to the flu because their symptoms are easier to decipher and battle. For example, a cold may give you a runny nose, sore throat or watery eyes – but the flu has the potential to keep you in bed.
9740 9555 Monday-Friday 10am - 3pm
Whether you catch a cold or the flu it’s important to know what to do to keep happy and healthy. By following the acronym ARMOUR we can help keep our immune system strong and healthy.
11 Neil Street, Sunbury
www.sunburyeyesurgeons.com.au
A: Always exercise regularly. This is crucial as physical activities can help rid the lungs and airways of bacteria, reducing the chances of getting a cold or flu.
R: Remember to take an immune-boosting supplement. As well, shiitake mushrooms are known to enhance immunity and have been used in traditional Chinese medicine to strengthen vitality. M: Must get enough sleep every day. Lack of sleep can impair your immune system. Sleep is one of the key factors that help keep immune cells healthy and help our body fight off sickness. O: Over analysing everything will only lead to stress, so do your best to avoid it. Stress weakens the immune system and can lead to chronic conditions including diabetes, heart disease and even cancer. U: Understand the importance of getting regular medical check-ups. Visiting the doctor for an annual check-up will keep you updated on the health status of your body. Medical check-ups show what your body is lacking and help you make informed decisions to address any potential health concerns. R: Remember to eat a healthy diet filled with fruits, vegies and whole grains. Eating the right food with a balance of all essential vitamins and minerals will help keep our immune systems strong and healthy. Eleanor Tabone

Going with the (healing) flow Why is it many ailments seem to emerge in winter?
Dr Fairclough says.
Dr David Fairclough B.Sc. (Clin.Sci.) M.H.Sc (Osteo) of Gisborne Osteopathy says it’s probably due to decreased activity during this slow “hibernation” period of the year.
Seniors are particularly vulnerable to aches and pains in winter, the treatment for which may involve stretching of connective tissues, rhythmic movement of joints or, in certain cases, a gentle manipulation for improving joint movement.
“We slow down, try to keep warm and sit and stay indoors,” he says. “This leads to decreased movement which then, over time, restricts the range of motion in the body in general. “Movement is needed for fluid dynamics – which means getting the blood circulation flowing. It’s very important that we maintain blood flow to deposit nutrients carried in the arteries and return old blood for re-oxygenation in the veins.” Adequate blood flow is needed to feed and repair damaged body tissue. The immune system relies on the circulation to deal with treatment and prevention of disease, such as the common cold and flu. Joints require a good supply of blood for repair and maintenance, particularly in dealing with arthritis. “We can achieve this with passive articulatory movement, stretching, and direct and indirect work on the affected muscles, ligaments and nerves,”

“The immune system relies on the circulation to deal with treatment and prevention of disease” “Osteopathic manual treatment methods are safe and effective,” Dr Fairclough says. “The aim is to provide long-lasting relief and, coupled with advice on stretching and strengthening, help prevent recurrence of pain.”

This gorgeous property, about five minutes from Romsey and about 15 minutes away from Woodend and Riddells Creek, has two dwellings on its eight post-and-rail fenced hectares. The large modern brick abode has four bedrooms and a study that could be used as a fifth. Large living area give lots of space, and the kitchen is equipped with enough prep benches to prepare a feast. There’s a dishwasher, gas cooktop, underbench oven and all mod cons here. Ducted heating and air conditioning give climate control, and there’s double garage alongside. The 1940s weatherboard second dwelling has three bedrooms and two bathrooms. It has split-system and a brick fireplace. Both dwellings use rainwater and there’s also non-potable reticulated water available for the gardens.
This beautiful spread of about 2.2 hectares – known as Waterview – has an architect-designed residence of sophisticated liveability. Professionally designed gardens are replete with gorgeous vignettes and unimpeded Mount Macedon vistas are smashing. The ground floor has a lounge room, a dining room, a study and family-meals zone, each with an elegant charm. Also down here are a laundry with fourth toilet, a powder room, and a bathroom serving a smaller bedroom next door to the main. Double sliders open in the main bedroom to a vine-covered pergola. Two bedrooms share first-floor space with a rumpus room, bathroom and separate toilet. Central heating, split-system, passive solar design, a 5kW solar system and tank, town and bore water, an ornamental lake teeming with birdlife, 200 mature olive trees and a 0.8-hectare paddock are other features.

It’s easy to imagine Mr Charles Tattersall giving a big thumbs up to how his Brennanah Manor, built in 1898, has been tweaked to suit contemporary needs. The house is surrounded by glorious gardens on a block of about 1.36 hectares, with a coach house/ stables complex a wonderful inclusion. About 38 squares of living space include gracious formal lounge and dining rooms with marble fireplaces; a sitting room; media room and a study with fireplaces; and a contemporary family-meals area abutting the kitchen. Four bedrooms (three with fireplaces) share three chic bathrooms. A bluestone-paved area, a vine-covered pergola, sweeping lawns, a rose walk and mature exotics make the outdoors a delight. House heating is hydronic and a double garage and watering system fed by two bores are other features. Piper Street and the train station are five minutes away by car.
About 35 minutes from Melbourne Airport and comprising about 24.28 hectares of land set up for horses, pristine Fulham Park is a neighbour to other superior equine complexes and has showstopping multi-use infrastructure. The house of about 60 squares is a beautifully presented mix of living and sleeping quarters. Along with a lounge room and a huge family-meals area, there’s a whopping entertainment/function room that opens to an arbour that leads to the vast shedding. The black-and-white kitchen has all mod-cons and a huge butler’s pantry. Four elegant bedrooms share two gleaming bathrooms. Along with 17 watered paddocks, there are four superior stables, a new 15 x 14-metre barn complex, a 15 x 15-metre workshop, electric/sighter wire fences, lane boundaries, three-phase power, a bore and tanks, solar panels, coded security gates.

In a quiet spot in Mulbarton estate, this 2013 build makes a splash on the street with its façade of stacked stone, brick, render and slate, as well as a rock retaining wall and steps beautifully made by local stonemasons. Inside, the palette of greys, charcoal and white – found in carpet and floor tiles, roller blinds and walls – is harmonious and en pointe, while honey-toned floating floorboards form a complimentary anchor. The floor plan is very conducive to family life. Along with a large living hub, there’s

a separate rumpus/theatre room (through leadlight bifolds); the main bedroom is a treat for the grown-ups; and a large study has internal/external access, making it great for an office. What makes the main bedroom so special is that it has two walk-in robes and two stylish en suites with Caesarstone-topped vanity units. The other three grey-carpeted bedrooms (built-in robes and white roller blinds) are along a rear hallway, as are the main bathroom and separate toilet. The living hub has a carpeted sitting
area with a gas log fire framed by a contemporary white mantelpiece, while the kitchen and meals zone is tiled. Black granite benches, splashbacks in black glass and white subway tiles, white joinery, a big walk-in pantry (with adjoining storeroom) and a Bellissimo Technika 900mm cooker are aesthetically pleasing and user-friendly in the cooks’ domain. The laundry next to the hub has a three-door closet, cupboards and a glazed door to the utility area. An integrated pergola above slate tiles

faces a good-sized side yard, which is entered from the front garden via a pair of leadlight-paned doors set in a steel trellis to support a nascent vine. As gardens are added to, this unique feature will come into its own. The dual-level backyard, on a block of about 1100 square metres, has tall trees along the back fence, through which can be seen one hole of the local golf course. Landscaping awaits a green thumb. SPORT Jets gear up for finals By Tara Murray Sunbury Jets may be undefeated in Big V women’s division 1, but according to coach Kennedy Kereama they have another gear to get to. Clearly the team to beat this season, the Jets aren’t planning to ease off, despite a finals spot being all but ensured with six matches to go. Kereama said they wouldn’t be taking any game easy in the run home but would look to prepare for finals. “My focus is on getting the best out of them now and getting ready for post-season basketball,” he said. “Nothing changes and we proceed as usual with our winning formula. “I told the girls post-game on Saturday they had had some good wins against good sides, but I think they can get better. “I think we have another gear to find, and we’ll need it at the pointy end of the competition. We need to keep improving day by day, week by week.” On Saturday night, the Jets easily accounted for third-placed Mildura. Travelling north, the Jets made easy work of the Heat: 82-59. Five Jets players reached double figures, with Jess Bygate, Alex Darby and Kayla Theodore providing key contributions off the bench. Despite the big win, Kereama wasn’t 100 per cent happy. “Mildura are the best offensive side in the competition, averaging 80 points a game,” he said. “We held them to 59 points and I thought we could have done better than that.” It’s at the defensive end that Kereama believes the Jets have the potential for most improvement. “We’re the best defensive side in the competition and the stats tell you that, but I think we can still get a lot better,” he said. “We have enough offensive sets and enough talent for it to take care of itself at that end of the court. “Most of our offence comes from our defence, but we want to be more polished.” At the offensive end, Kereama is happy with the spread of scorers. “The players don’t care who’s doing the scoring,” he said. “Some teams have two or three scoring threats, whereas we have seven or eight. “I think any of our 12 players can score when given the chance.” The Jets this week face a Chelsea side that has won seven games in a row. They then face Latrobe City before playing bottom four sides in the last three rounds. “Chelsea are the next in-form team after us,” Kereama said. “It’ll be a good challenge for us. “We won’t be taking anyone lightly … if we can, we want to crush teams.”
Regrouping Tigers hold on to finals hopes “Frustrating”. That’s how Lancefield netball coach Alan Watson describes his side’s first half-season in the Riddell District Netball League. With a squad full of talent, Watson believed, pre-season, that his side would be in the mix at the top. But while keeping faith with the talent, getting all of it on court at the same time has been an issue all year. “We haven’t had the whole squad for a match yet,” Watson said last week. “It’s hard having to bring in five players every week. Sometimes they don’t know each other, let alone having played together, which makes it hard. “Our strongest players have been missing against the top sides. “Against Macedon we had six players out, and we had several players out against Rupertswood and Romsey.“ Missing players have cost the Tigers dearly, and the side has fallen short against all of the top teams: a 0-5 record against sides in the top six. On Saturday, they slipped out of the top six after losing to Melton Centrals. Centrals took control of the game early and extended their lead at every break to win 42-35. Defender Olivia Pels was best for the Tigers in the loss, and Savaii Williams was best of the goalers, shooting 22. Watson says he hopes the match against Centrals will be the last time the Tigers are without such a big group of players. With the likelihood of a full or close to full-strength squad to select from in coming weeks, Watson says finals are still the goal. The Tigers played finals last season for the first time in many years. “I think we can cause upsets on the way home,” he said. “I hope we can win enough games to make finals and show what we can do.” The Tigers’ biggest challenge comes this week when they take on 2015 premiers Riddell. “We should nearly have our whole side back,” Watson said. Elsewhere at the weekend, there was an upset and three big wins. Diggers Rest upset Macedon to move into the top six, while Romsey, Riddell and Rupertswood all broke the 100-goal barrier to record easy wins over Wallan, Sunbury Kangaroos and Woodend-Hesket respectively.

Three straight losses, but Lions coach sees an upside Despite a third straight loss, Sunbury Lions coach Rick Horwood sees plenty of positives out of the past few weeks in the Ballarat Football League. The Lions have been in front in all three games, and in the past two, including against North Ballarat City on Saturday, they’ve had chances to win. Horwood said it showed that when they played their best football, the Lions could match it with the top sides. “You’ve got to keep putting yourself in those positions,” he said. “We’re competing and getting in front and putting ourselves in a position to win the game. 34 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 5, 2016
“I’m looking forward to when we do finish off games.” Horwood said he and his team had looked at why they weren’t able to finish strongly. “I think it’s psychological,” he said. “We looked at fitness and we don’t think it’s that. “We haven’t been in these positions against top sides in the last couple of years and now we are, we can’t beat them. We need to get past it.” It was a case of deja vu for the Lions in Saturday’s 17.13 (115)-15.9 (99) loss to North Ballarat City; there were several similarities to the defeat to East Point the week before. The Lions began well before Josh Burgess left the ground with concussion after a heavy
collision in the second quarter. Burgess had already kicked three goals and was the key player in the Lions’ forward line. “We lost our main avenue to goal and we didn’t adjust how we needed to,” Horwood said. “We had the same thing happen last week with Joe Redfern suffering concussion in the second quarter. We rested him this week then we lost Adam Short before the game; he could have given us other options up forward.” A lapse from the Lions allowed City to cut the margin to eight points at three-quarter time with a goal after the siren. City hit the lead early in the last before the Lions responded. “We could have got back in front in the last
quarter,” Horwood said. “I thought we were going to go on with it, but it wasn’t to be.” It was the experienced players in the middle who starred for the Lions, with David Kovacevic, Alik Magin, Mathew Medcraft, Andrew Duhau and Greg Hay named among the best. The Lions slipped to fifth on the ladder ahead of a clash with Ballarat this weekend. “Given the great start to the season we’re still in the mix,” Horwood said. “We have a home game this week and no more trips to Ballarat. We have to win.” Tara Murray

Thousand-game umpire to keep on keeping score Turning up every Saturday to stand between the goals, Graeme Carter doesn’t take too much notice of the number of games in which he has officiated. For him, it’s the friendship and camaraderie that comes with being a goal umpire that has him returning every year. On Saturday, Carter umpired his 1000th game as part of the Riddell Umpires group that officiates in both the Riddell District and Ballarat football leagues. Carter, 69, is now the fifth official to have umpired 1000 games for the Riddell Umpires.
He began goal umpiring in 1987. “I normally do two games a week,” he said before his milestone game between Melton Centrals and Lancefield at the weekend. “One of my mates, Brian Pizaro, is an umpire and he suggested I come down. He’s umpired more than 900 games himself. I love doing it for the teamwork and camaraderie. It’s something I really enjoy.” On top of his 1000 games as a goal umpire, he has blown the whistle in more than 150 games as a field umpire. Carter says his preference of the two
officiating roles is goal umpiring. “I started in the EDFL [Essendon District Football League] and umpired 160-odd games there,” he says. There have been many memorable games in his time as an umpire, but one under-18 match stands out. “There was an under-18 grand final and it was a draw. The following week the result was a one-point margin.” The Sunbury resident says the game has changed a lot since he started. “We train every week and go through
Burras dig in at home By Tara Murray Diggers Rest has stamped itself as the team to beat in this year’s Riddell District Football League season after a big win against Macedon on Saturday. It was a top-of-the-table clash at Bloomdale Oval for the at-home Burras against Macedon, and it was the undefeated home side that controlled most of the game. The Burras found plenty of the ball early on but couldn’t convert. Then, having found the middle of the goals, the Burras kicked away from the Cats for a 13.17 (95)-6.14 (50) win. After only just getting the job done the week before against Wallan, Burras’ coach Shaun Sims was more pleased with Saturday’s showing. “We addressed a few things during the week and, for most of the game, our performance was really strong,” Sims said. “We’re blessed to have some really good players [who] stood up at different times. “Most of the day, we were putting ourselves in a good position. “We gave away some stupid free kicks and gave them three or four goals which I’m not rapt about, but to get away with a 40-point win, and to play well, is pleasing.” Sims said the club was focused on ensuring the players were not just concerned with results but enjoying themselves on the field and as a group. He said, overall, the club was as close as it had been in his time there. The club’s reserves side is also undefeated after beating the Cats in its top-of-the-table clash. “Footy is fun and that’s the important thing,” Sims said. “We want to do the right things most of the time, which we’re doing, “We’re not judging ourselves on just wins. We’ve been quite disappointed with some of our performances and happy with others.” Jamie Lobb was named best-on-ground for a second straight week, while Luke Smailes kicked four goals in Saturday’s win. Cats midfielder Casey Summerfield was the game’s standout player. One positive for the undermanned Cats was the return of Daniel Markworth. Markworth played junior football at the club and was playing his first game back after an injury-riddled stint with AFL club St Kilda. The result puts the Burras two games clear of Riddell and the Cats. They play Sunbury Kangaroos this week. Sims said Andrew Tyquin, Michael Kilty, Brent Tuckey and Patrick Jackson would all return to the senior side in the next few weeks. Elsewhere, Wallan snuck home against Romsey, Rupertswood smashed WoodendHesket, Lancefield defeated Melton Centrals, Broadford had a 290-point win over Rockbank, and Riddell was too good for Sunbury Kangaroos.
Luke Smailes holds a strong grab for the Burras.
all the procedures and game situations on Wednesdays. “The way the players play the game has changed a lot. It’s more professional now.” Having reached the magical 1000th game milestone, Carter believes he has a lot left to give to the game. “I’ll keep going as long as they want me,” he says. “The friendships and the teamwork you develop is why I do it. You just help each other out.” Tara Murray

East Sunbury kept its finals hopes alive with its first ever win over Coburg Districts in division 2 of the Essendon District Football League. In one of its best performances of the season, the Thunder jumped out of the blocks and was never headed, winning 15.16 (106)-5.6 (36). Lucas Shaw kicked four goals and Thomas Galea three, while Lachlan Brne was judged best on ground. Brne, who’s still eligible to play under-18.5s, has been named among the Thunder’s best players in three of his four senior games. The Thunder is fifth on the ladder, a game outside the top four.
Netball
Sunbury Lions lost a thrilling grand final rematch against North Ballarat City in the Ballarat Netball League on Saturday. It was an up-and-down game with both sides having periods of dominance. Despite leading by four goals at the last break, the Lions couldn’t hold on, losing 53-51. Goal attack Laura Carland (22 goals) was best for the Lions, who remain fourth on the ladder.
Soccer
Gisborne proved no match for Laverton Park in FFV state league 5 west. In what was a catch-up game, Gisborne struggled to match the might of Laverton Park, who piled on the goals for a 7-1 win. Gisborne is seventh on the ladder. Kyneton District and state league 2 north-west side Sunbury United both had the weekend off.
Basketball
Sunbury Jets’ see-sawing season continued with a loss to Mildura on Saturday. Travelling up the freeway, the Jets would have been confident of a win against the lower-placed Heat. They did lead, by four points at quarter-time and two just before half-time, but they couldn’t maintain their high shooting percentage, which brought the 84-93 result. Ish Sanders top-scored for the Jets with 29 points.
Football
The Calder Cannons made it four straight wins in the TAC Cup with victory against Bendigo Pioneers on Sunday. It was an even first quarter, before four goals to one in the second saw the Cannons open up a 20-point lead at the main break. The margin rose to 38 at the last break as the Cannons went on to win 13.15 (93)-10.16 (76). Noah Balta kicked three goals in his second game of the season, while Ben Ronke and Zach Guthrie were best on ground.
