Foodies hail smoke ban By Matt Crossman A trial smoking ban in Sunbury’s foodie precinct has been hailed a tremendous success, with restaurateurs calling for a permanent ban ahead of statewide restrictions from late 2017. The east side of O’Shanassy Street will stay smoke free between Station and Brook streets until at least April next year after Hume council passed a proposal put by Sunbury Community Health, Sunbury Business Association and traders. District 3429 owner Ami Tran and Vic’s Food and Wine’s Vic Scerri said reaction to the trial ban, which started on April 4, had been
overwhelmingly positive, even though the ban had been largely self regulated. “It means families, parents, old people … they can actually enjoy their food without having to worry about smoke,” Ms Tran said. “Smokers, too, have been good about it, just going elsewhere to have a cigarette. It’s been great for the area.” Mr Scerri said diners had quickly adjusted to the change. “There’s no reason it shouldn’t continue.” Council’s city communities director, Margarita Caddick, said the trial ban was being monitored and evaluated. “Hume officers regularly patrol the area and
we’re pleased that people have done the right thing and refrained from smoking,” she said. “The trial is almost three months old, and no fines have been issued to date. Diners and local businesses have provided positive feedback. “We think it’s going very well.” A survey of more than 150 people last year found 88.5 per cent supported the trial ban. In February, Cr Jack Medcraft said it could be the first step to a ban in other public places, such as carparks and shopping centres. “We would cop flak over it from some people … but the survey with the O’Shanassy Street proposal showed the community is saying, if you want to smoke, go to another spot.”
Reaction to $2.1 million of streetscape improvements unveiled last November also continues to be favourable. Powerlines were put underground and kerbs and drainage upgraded. Wider paths have given traders more room for outdoor tables and chairs, while new council policies allow businesses to set up permanent structures. But perhaps the most popular addition has been the fairy lights in the street’s elm trees. Ms Tran, Mr Scerri and council planning and development director Kelvin Walsh said the project had helped solidify O’Shanassy Street’s growing reputation as a foodie destination and “a spectacular place to dine”.

Thumbs up on bushfire progress By Matt Crossman
McKenzie said last week’s report showed the department was making good progress, but there was more to be done. “We made a commitment to the people of Lancefield and the broader community that we would make significant improvements,” he said. The report stated that risk assessment processes had been improved and rules and triggers for reviews of burn plans implemented. A community service charter has been published and a statewide compliance audit completed. Training of staff is ongoing, while a broadening of focus on the management of bushfire risks was “on track”. Darren Burns, who runs Benloch’s
Weekaway holiday camp and has been involved in meetings with ministers and the department, said the response had been pleasing. “But I feel we won’t know how a lot of it has gone until the next time a burn-off goes through the area,” he said. “The fact they’re moving on all 22 [recommendations] is a good thing, but until it actually happens we won’t really know.” While buildings were not damaged, most of the 21 hectares of bushland on Mr Burns’ Kitchenhams Road property were burnt out by the fire. He is among the 50-or-so residents still working through claims with the government’s insurance agency.

Residents of Benloch and surrounding areas have welcomed a progress report that shows the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning is on track to meet commitments made following last year’s Lancefield-Cobaw bushfire. But they say the real test will come before and after planned burns in the lead-up to future fire seasons. The report, released last week by the government inspector-general for emergency management, found 13 of 22 recommendations and nine of 10 additional commitments had
been delivered. A 266-hectare planned burn in the Cobaw Ranges near Lancefield broke containment lines on October 3 and again on October 6. Close to 3000 hectares were eventually burnt, while four houses, 25 sheds and many kilometres of fencing were destroyed. An independent inquiry handed down in November found the burn had been “inadequately resourced” from the start. Then environment minister Lisa Neville confirmed that the approvals process that led to ignition on September 30 “basically” involved one person. Department acting chief fire officer Darrin

CHARLOTTE, 5
Organisers of a community kitchen that feeds more than 170 Sunbury residents every week believe it is stepping into a brighter future as an independent entity. The former Rotary program – now known as Sunbury Neighbourhood Kitchen, a not-for-profit group run by volunteers – resumed on Monday under its own steam after the school holiday break. Community kitchen co-founder Marianne Williams said a mutual decision to incorporate the group would not have a negative effect. She said the kitchen would continue to serve good food every Monday night at the Elizabeth Drive community centre, bringing together people who might otherwise be too isolated to socialise. “We’re coming up to three years and it continues to be very, very successful,” Ms Williams said. “Without Rotary, the kitchen wouldn’t have started. But this is going to make it even stronger. We’ve got a really good committee behind us now. “The kitchen has thrived because of the volunteers and the community support, and that’s going to continue.” Sunbury Rotary Club president David Allan said the change meant those involved could be totally focused on the kitchen. “All funds have been transferred across and the volunteers will remain the same. A lot of Rotarians will continue to be involved and we will continue to support it in a variety of ways,” Mr Allan said. A celebration of the new group is likely to be held in August.

Sacred ground claimed in song and dance Indigenous music and dance were central to a colourful display of Aboriginal culture held at Sunbury as part of NAIDOC Week (July 3-9). Face-painting, a welcome to country and a smoking ceremony were also part of Western Health’s event at Sunbury Day Hospital last Wednesday. Indigenous and non-indigenous residents, including many children, joined in the celebrations of this year’s NAIDOC Week theme: ‘We all stand on sacred ground’. Events in the Macedon Ranges included Ganagan, a Kyneton town hall exhibition of art showing waterways through Koori eyes.

Heritage spurs real estate action By Matt Crossman Interest in the Macedon Ranges’ many heritage properties and estates is soaring, expert renovator, author and sales agent Dominic Romeo says. While Melbourne buyers are leading a return to Mount Macedon, Mr Romeo says investors from many other areas, including Queensland, are in heated competition for historic properties across the municipality. “There’s a very strong appetite,” he said. “A lot of people are looking at doing up properties
and, with all these renovation TV shows, there seems to be a new strength in this. “And because the Macedon Ranges is between Melbourne and Bendigo, it’s very commutable.” Mr Romeo said the area’s spectacular natural beauty also played a part. “Ultimately, heritage properties don’t come on the market that often,” he said. “So the competition is pretty serious. Keatings Real Estate had one recently outside Kyneton. They had a reserve of $895,000 and it was a very run-down 1860s homestead.
‘‘

“I was at the auction and there was fierce competition. It ended up going for $1.27 million. “We’re talking about a property that needed a lot of work.” Mr Romeo, who is selling houses for a boutique agency, is preparing to list Faraday’s
1869 granite school house, one of only two such buildings in the state. He said he expected the Macedon Ranges’ popularity to continue. “This area just offers so much for people interested in unique and historic property.” Mr Romeo and his wife Marie have painstakingly restored some of the area’s most historic properties, including Rupertswood and Mount Macedon’s Karori. Last September, an in-depth interview about the launch of the couple’s coffee table book, The Constant Renovators, featured in Star Weekly.
Paper cranes lift spirits The story of a Japanese girl with cancer who desperately wanted to make 1000 paper cranes has helped Sunbury’s Donna Page find ways to deal with anxiety. Earlier this year, Ms Page took part in Sunbury Community Health’s Art of Change, a free six-week skills program promoting selfresponsibility and expression. She discovered that tapping into her creative side was a way to short-circuit her illness. “Before the program, I would struggle to sit down for even 10 minutes at a time, whereas now I can sit down for half an hour or an hour,” she said. “Now, when I have anxiety or I’m feeling a little down, I pull out my paper and make cranes. It’s a healthy way to deal with it.” Ms Page said the program included a lot of positive affirmation “showing you how you can change your life for the better”. Hearing about the Hiroshima schoolgirl,
whose classmates finished her project after she died, was an inspiration for Ms Page. “As soon I made one, I was like, that’s it, I’m going to do that. And I did it. “It’s been a mission to make life better for myself and my children.” Ms Page encourages anyone dealing with addiction or mental illness to sign up for the next program, which will be held at the Salvation Army Community Hall from October 4 to November 15. “Just do it,” she said. “It changes lives.” Details: 9744 9221 Matt Crossman

From play-dough to CD Preschoolers from Kyneton Playgroup aren’t so much singing for their supper, but for a brighter future. The musical talents of children are being recorded ahead of the release of a new album, with the money raised going to the non-profit organisation’s programs and to help engage kids from socially isolated and at-risk families. Also featuring professional musicians Jed Palmer, Zoe Barry and Rexine Perry, Kyneton Playgroup Sings: Songs for Kids will be released at the Kyneton Music Festival in October. Playgroup president Carmen Eastman says the project represents a fresh approach to fundraising.
“Funding is always a consideration,” she says. “We must consider innovative ways to raise funds.” For the kids, it’s also great fun. Perry, a renowned theatre performer whose children attend sessions at the St Andrew’s Uniting Church hall, was herself part of the group as a child. “Old Kyneton still exists and we feel a great responsibility to ensure that those values keep living,” she says. Digital copy $6, CD $15. Business donations also accepted. More details: goo.gl/ClfHUD

Hope for councils in ‘Catch-22’ By Matt Crossman There are hopes that a statewide review of school-crossing funding arrangements will lead to councils bearing less of the cost burden. VicRoads is working with the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) and Education Department to develop a more sustainable model while maintaining a focus on safety. MAV president Bill McArthur said crossing supervisors and contributions to the State Emergency Service were among many areas where councils were paying more. “[School crossing supervisors] began as a
joint 50-50 funding split in 1975, but now only 20 per cent of costs is covered by the state, with councils contributing $44 million a year,’’ he said. “Councils have been caught in a Catch-22 for years: increase rates to keep funding these important services or face misdirected community anger if they cease.” Cr McArthur said the MAV had been “chipping away” to achieve better deals. “But these are sensitive to political cycles,” he said. “We are hopeful we can get these services back to 50-50 arrangements, ensuring communities aren’t without the services they rely on.”
Smart plan for Ranges Business and community leaders are being invited to lead the charge for change in the Macedon Ranges. Funded by the state government, social venture Make a Change is looking to help residents improve fire-affected communities such as Lancefield, Benloch, Romsey and Baynton. This Thursday’s free Let’s Nut It Out skills session will be the second in a series of state government-funded events being held across the area. Make a Change spokeswoman Karen Corr said the group was all about bringing expertise and knowledge to the community. “We designed Let’s Nut It Out to connect people in a way that generates solutions and connections,” she said. “By working with skilled mentors, people can get into the nuts and bolts of their initiative and gain momentum.”
8 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 12, 2016
Session mentors will include Lancefield-Romsey Bendigo Bank manager Michael O’Gorman and Cobaw Community Health program manager Caroline Sarah. “The Lancefield community bank is a big supporter of local community projects,” Mr O’Gorman says. “Being part of Let’s Nut It Out gives us a chance to look out for future community initiatives to support, as well as provide valuable advice.” The event will be held at Romsey Community Hub from 9.30am. Bookings essential. Details: www.makeachange.org.au Matt Crossman Michael O’Gorman, Karen Corr and Caroline Sarah are looking forward to encouraging nuts-and-bolts momentum. (Supplied)
Macedon Ranges council chief executive Peter Johnston said the council remained committed to providing a quality schoolcrossing program. “However, over the years council has picked up more and more of the cost of providing the program,” he said. “Council welcomes a conversation with government bodies such as VicRoads on how the funding model for the school-crossing program can be improved going forward.” Mr Johnston said the recent introduction of rate-rise capping meant the council might need to reduce support for programs that were
mostly the responsibility of other levels of government. VicRoads acting operation services director Nicki Kyriakou said the review would examine costs and operational times of the service. Eligibility criteria and extra safety measures at schools would also be looked at, as experts considered interstate and overseas models. “VicRoads is committed to providing a subsidy to the school crossing program and will continue to work with all stakeholders as part of the statewide review,” she said. The review is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Unless you’re a fungi aficionado (bearing in mind that most of Australia’s fungi species don’t even have a name as yet), it’s vital that newbies to mushroom foraging have an expert in tow. What can be seen as beautiful and enticing can lead to an excruciating death, while the weird and ugly can be the most delectable. Those red-spotted toadstools, for example, straight from nursery books, look incredibly cute but are poisonous, and if magic mushrooms are accidentally selected, they will give you a potentially dangerous ‘trip’ you didn’t bargain on.

The best time to go mushrooming is in the early morning when low-lying mists wreathe eerily through a hushed forest, an atmosphere highly conducive to poking around tree roots, under pine trees and in likely nooks and crannies.
Mushies are up to 90 per cent water, and delicate, so handle them as little as possible. Transport them in a single layer and use them as soon as possible. If storing in the fridge, arrange in a single layer and cover with a slightly damp tea towel. Macedon Ranges chefs love the bounty of wild mushrooms to be found in their patch, so expect to see these culinary treats appear on menus as a ragu, in pasta dishes and piled on brekky toast.

About 67 hectares on the edge of the ‘granite country’, Montana is a unique mix of fertile farmland, magnificent views and imposing boulder outcrops. Well fenced and with four large dams, the property also has numerous sheds – including a huge, shearing shed, a holding yard and loading ramp. The house has three large bedrooms that share a bathroom. A family-meals area next to the kitchen has floorboards and a wood heater, while a large second living space has a split-system and loads of vertical blind-dressed windows, plus a timber-lined ceiling with exposed beams. The kitchen has an old-style slow combustion stove and timber cupboards. A covered deck provides a perch to take in peaceful country views, and there’s a netted garden (or dog run) and a large water tank. All just 10 minutes from Lancefield, 45 minutes from Melbourne Airport.
On about 954 square metres in a country lane setting, this classic brick veneer in a prized Macedon spot will provide a fab retreat for a family. An L-shaped lounge-dining room with a wood heater is to the left of the entry foyer, and a north-facing family-meals zone (with bay window, split-system and a second wood heater) links with the kitchen. A stack of timber cupboards (including pantry), a breakfast bench and electric cooking appliances fit out the cooks’ domain. Four large bedrooms, one of which is ideal as a study, include the main, which has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite. Extensive brick paving and verandahs on three sides add to amenity, and there’s a secure garage at the end of a long driveway. Gardens are established and there are shady nooks where you can pull up a pew.

First-time buyers, investors and downsizers are likely to have their interest piqued by this one. On a large, irregular-shaped block, the small-footprint house has the feel of a permanent weekender, with all the cosiness that entails. A wood heater in the lounge room supports the ambience, while crisp white walls and ceilings, exposed timber ceiling beams, pine floorboards and a dual-level layout add considerably to overall appeal. Abutting a meals zone, the kitchen has a 1970s vibe with laminate wood-grain cabinetry topped with lime-green benches. A breakfast bench and an electric upright cooker are other inclusions. There are three carpeted bedrooms, two with built-in wardrobes. The shared bathroom is a whopper and has a recently installed shower and soft-grey tiles. Laundry and toilet are separate. New paling fences rim the block and there’s scope for further improvement.
One of three units on the block, this one is in a good spot as it’s within a leisurely stroll of Kyneton Botanic Gardens, trails along Campaspe River and shops. First-time buyers and investors are likely to take note of the well-presented unit on a good-sized block. Two carpeted bedrooms, each with built-in wardrobe, share a bathroom/European laundry with white wall tiles and floor covering in a latte shade. The carpeted living room immediately on entry adjoins a kitchen, which has plenty of bench space and a gas upright cooker under a rangehood. A carport for one vehicle extends into the backyard, making it functional as an outdoor relaxation space. Neighbouring trees along the back fence add shade and a pleasing leafiness, while the backyard has space to create a garden. The well-lit unit has a wall gas heater to tame Kyneton’s winters and the train station is close.

Named Bennetts Lane as a tribute by its jazz club owner, this wonderful property of about 4.04 hectares – entirely rimmed by sheltering cypresses and neighbouring the Mount Gisborne Wildlife Reserve – nails the essence of ‘family haven’. The Federation-style house perches on top of the rise, with grounds spread out like a skirt of terraced gardens, floodlit tennis court, picturesque waterway, wooden stairs connecting levels, garden structures and sculptures – and enough leafy nooks and crannies to get lost in.

Auction: August 6 at 11am
An elevated timber deck is the spot to watch a game of tennis, with a shared bottle of red from the double-brick cellar. A large nearby building (topped with an 8kW solar system) has a bathroom and an attached carport. A big, mulched and fenced playground is at the back of the block, with trees offering dappled shade. Now the house, reached via a long driveway ending in a huge circle. On the right of an entry foyer, a large, carpeted lounge-dining room has a bay window and
inset wood heater. Across the way, double doors open into a study. Anchored by spotted gum floorboards, the family-meals and kitchen zone has multiple windows dressed in Laura Ashley drapes, while timber cabinetry and all the mod-cons characterise the kitchen. The lavish main bedroom, stretching from front to back, has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite (with tub), while the other three share a rear hall, along with a period-styled bathroom with freestanding, egg-shaped spa under a big window.

Ducted heating, and vacuum and alarm systems, are indoor features and, outdoors, there’s a bore with potable water, a 100,000-litre house water tank and another of 15,000 litres for the gardens. A permit for a farm shed has been council-approved, with the site already cut and access road completed. This jazzy property is a four-minute car trip from the heart of town, and less than 35 minutes from Bourke Street in the city. Carole Levy 13 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 12, 2016

27 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 12, 2016
SPORT Seven wins in a row turn Bombers into targets Riddell is slowly getting used to being the hunted, not the hunter, in the Riddell District Football League. After starting the season slowly, the Bombers have won their past seven matches to sit second behind unbeaten Diggers Rest. The biggest test of that run came on Saturday when they overcame a determined Lancefield unit. In a low-scoring affair, the two sides kicked a combined 10 goals in the first three quarters, with the Bombers leading by two points at the final break. But Riddell found another level in the final stretch, kicking seven goals to one to win 12.8 (80)-6.6 (42).
Bombers coach Jamie Elliott said they were difficult conditions to adjust to. “We started really well and were switched on in the first 10 minutes,” he said. “It was difficult to get a footing on the heavy ground and even kicking for goal you could slip. “It was hard to chip around, too, as if you missed the player it was hard to get into a better position.” With almost half the Bombers side aged 20 or under, Elliott turned to some of the bigger bodies in the middle in the last quarter. “The younger guys found the going tough in the conditions,” he said. “With Brayden Allen in the ruck and some
bigger bodies, I don’t think we lost a centre clearance in the last quarter. We got it to Brian Ruffell and James Nolan down forward and they kicked some goals.” In fact, Ruffell managed four, Nolan and Haydn Ross two each. With only the table-topping Diggers Rest having a longer winning streak (11), the Bombers find themselves in a similar position to last season when they won nine in a row. Elliott, who wasn’t at the club last year, said some players had gone through the unbeaten run last season, but for others it was a new experience. ‘‘It’s turned from us hunting to being the hunted and the young guys are getting used to it,” he said. “They all
Lions win the hard way By Tara Murray The finals hopes of Sunbury Lions got a boost when they put more space between themselves and seventh-placed Ballarat in the Ballarat Netball League. The win against Ballarat means the fourth-placed Lions are two games clear inside the top six, and it keeps them in touch with the top three. The 55-52 win didn’t come easily, the Swans pushing them all the way. Karen Meredith took the reins as Lions’ coach for the first time on Saturday. Meredith was appointed coach in the preseason but, due to school netball coaching commitments, she was always going to come on board later in the season. Meredith said it was unusual to start coaching a side so late in the piece. She got her first look at the group two weeks ago, as a spectator. “It’s different … most teams you’re involved with preseason and [you] get to know the girls, and that sort of thing,” she said. “I’ve been lucky that I’ve coached some of them before in different teams, and that makes it a little easier.” Meredith said a third-quarter lapse meant the result was closer than they would have liked. “It was a pressure game for the girls,” she said. “There was that lapse when we faded out towards the end of the third term. We probably could have finished off our shooting a bit better,” Meredith said. “It may not have been such a close margin.” The experienced trio of Prue Stanley, Katelyn Begeley and Beck Anstey stepped it up in the last quarter to ensure the Lions got their win. Anstey shut down the Swans’ goal shooter in that last term. “I said to the girls, when the opposition has the dominant player it might take you three quarters to get on top of her,” the coach said. “The tall goaler only got three goals in the last quarter and we’d shut her down by the end of the game. “I think moving Katelyn into wing defence helped, too. “Prue and Katelyn have played a lot together. “They provided a nice wall, [which] slowed them down the court.” The first-time goaling combination of Amy Starzer and Lauren Woodgate shared the prizes, Woodgate scoring 28 goals and Starzer 27. Meredith says she won’t be changing too much now that she’s back coaching. “I’ll just fine-tune things,” she said. “The girls are really experienced. They know when they’re doing things wrong; you don’t have to tell them. “I’ll look at a couple of tactics they may not think of while they’re on court.” 28 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 12, 2016
deserve their spots, but they’ll have patches of brilliance and then go missing. Overall, we’re happy with how they’re going.” Elliott said he was also happy with how the off-season recruits had settled into the side, with Scott Walsh, Ben Sonogan and Matthew Said being named among the team’s best on Saturday. The Bombers face Broadford this week before a much-needed bye. Elsewhere, Romsey pushed Macedon all the way; Rupertswood smashed Rockbank; Diggers Rest was too good for Melton Centrals; and Broadford beat Wallan. Tara Murray
Jets early blitz takes Venom by surprise Sunbury Jets set a plan to score early to unsettle Warrandyte in Big V men’s division 1 on Saturday night. The Venom are one of the best defensive sides in the competition, known for keeping opponents to low scores. But the Jets scored a massive 32 points in the first quarter to open up a 13-point lead at quarter-time. They kept up the intensity for most of the game, winning 90-60. Jets’ coach Andrew Summerville said the plan was simply to set up the win. “We had a plan to try and score quickly and be really offensive, but it had to be on the back of our defence. “I think, particularly in the first and second quarters, our defence was good; we created stops, which created some fast scores in transition. “To put 30-something on them in a quarter and 90 in the game is possibly one of the highest scores against them all year.” While impressed with the first half, Summerville said he would again look at what they do at half-time after a slow third quarter. “We spoke about it at half-time, about not going away from what we were doing,” he said. “They got some easy shots too, which I’m a little disappointed about, particularly in the third quarter. “We didn’t score much for that quarter, but still won by 30 points, so we can’t be too disappointed.” Five Jets players hit double figures for the first time this season. Both Sanders and Mitch Newton (17 points) have been participating in open scrimmages with National Basketball League side Melbourne United. “They get to play against some better players,” Summerville said. “Joe Ingles was there one day and Chris Goulding is there, so it’s good exposure for those guys.” The win puts the Jets back into the top eight, but Summerville said they weren’t looking any further ahead than this weekend. “We have to play Casey here, and then travel to Latrobe, and both sides are in the top five. We have to be successful against them, and what happens after that isn’t a focal point.” “I don’t want them to get too far ahead of themselves.”

Cats steal the cream By Tara Murray It was a battle of the contenders in the Riddell District Netball League on Saturday and it didn’t disappoint, with two one-goal results. Six of the top seven teams went head to head in a round which could have changed the top six. An undermanned Macedon returned to the winners’ list with a 44-43 win against fifth-placed Romsey. The Cats overcame a five goal three-quarter time deficit to get the win, thanks to Cats playing coach Ciara Stewart’s 10 goals from 11 attempts. The win keeps the Cats in fourth spot, a game clear of the Redbacks. At Arnolds Creek, Melton Centrals held off a fast-finishing Diggers Rest to win 51-50. Centrals led by nine goals at three-quarter time before the Burras found their groove in the last quarter. Rebecca Morabito was the standout for the Centrals. The Centrals, who have beaten three of the other top seven sides in the past three weeks, remain in third position. Ladder leader Rupertswood had the week off because Rockbank does not have an A-grade side. This allowed Riddell to go top with a 57-45 victory over seventh-placed Lancefield. Bombers defender Lauren Close continued her recent good form to be named best on court, while Rebecca Colwell shot 38 goals from 40 attempts. Midcourter Taylah Watson was named the Tigers’ best. The Bombers jump ahead of Rupertswood on percentage. Broadford defeated Wallan in the other match.

Neighbouring cricket clubs move to switch affiliation Kyneton and Malmsbury cricket clubs have applied to join Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s senior competition next season. Both clubs’ senior teams currently play in the Castlemaine and District Cricket Association, while their junior sides are already part of the GDCA. Existing GDCA clubs will vote at the association’s annual meeting next week on whether to accept the applications. GDCA secretary Rob McIntyre said the clubs and the association had spoken regularly about the possible move and members of both clubs had voted overwhelmingly in support of the switch between associations. “The Castlemaine and Maryborough
cricket associations have been discussing the possibility of amalgamating in the next year or two,” McIntyre said. “Kyneton and Malmsbury cricket clubs feel that being on the southern end of the Castlemaine DCA would be a disadvantage in travelling and may affect their playing numbers. “These applications will be presented and voted on by the clubs at the annual general meeting on July 18 and will require a 75 per cent majority for the applications to be approved. “The fact that the two clubs already have junior teams in the GDCA should provide a favourable outcome.” McIntyre said if the two clubs did join the GDCA competition they would take five senior
teams with them, bringing the number to 70 based on last season’s numbers. Last season, Kyneton had teams in the A-reserve, B-grade, B-reserve and C-grade/ under-16 competitions. They won the B-grade competition. Malmsbury had two senior sides which played in B-grade and B-reserve. The B-grade team finished on top of the ladder before being bundled out in the first week of finals. “This will mean either adding an extra grade or the option of increasing the number of teams per grade from the current eight to 10,” McIntyre said. “Whether this happens across all grades or just the lower grades will be up for discussion
Sunbury turns up heat By Tara Murray Sunbury Lions were roaring as they returned to the Ballarat Football League’s winners’ list on Saturday. After a tough three weeks of losses, this was more of the Lions that we’d seen earlier in the season. They started well against Ballarat and could have been further ahead early in the game. Coming out full of fire from the start, the Lions determined to ensure there would be no third- quarter lapse as in the previous fortnight. They dominated play in the second and third quarters before switching players around and resting some in the final term. Despite letting through some late goals, Sunbury still won 16.11 (107)-9.4 (64). Coach Rick Horwood was rapt to return to the winners’ list after the rare three-straight losses. “It’s been a tough month and it’s pleasing for the players to get some reward for their efforts. It has been a soul-searching week, led by the players and the leaders of the club – which is even more important. “The coaching staff took a bit of a step back and let the leaders grow.” Horwood was happy the playing group responded so well. “The first half was really good and we had intent to win the third quarter, which we did. But it was disappointing we let them kick nine goals in the end. “We rested ‘Kova’ [David Kovacevic], and ‘Burgo’ [Josh Burgess] in the last quarter, and it unbalanced our structures.” Horwood said neither had injuries, but he was just being cautious with such a big lead. Alik Magin racked up another best-onground accolade and was well supported by Josh Guthrie, Chris Tsardakis, Greg Hay, Mathew Medcraft and Tom Donoghue. Jack Landt kicked his fifth bag of four goals; Jesse McInneny booted three but could have had more had he kicked straight. The Lions face third-placed Redan this week and a win would see them switch positions. The match takes on extra significance as the club remembers Albert and Maree Rizk, who died two years ago when Malaysian flight MH17 crashed. Horwood said the match meant a lot for the playing group, of which the Rizk’s son James is a part. “The boys really want to get the win.”

Lions remember plane disaster victims Saturday’s game against Redan takes on extra significance for Sunbury Lions as they remember Albert and Maree Rizk. The husband and wife, who were killed when Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 crashed on July 17, 2014, were both heavily involved in the club. The Lions played Redan the day after the 30 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 12, 2016
crash and the two teams played in a memorial match last year to honour the couple. Lions vice-president Hedley Duhau said it would be a more low-key day this year. One minute’s silence will be held and a banner will be raised before the match, while photos of the couple and their family and friends will be shown on the scoreboard.
The club will also host a pre-game function, with AFL great Peter Daicos the main guest. Mr and Mrs Rizk’s son, James, will be at the luncheon, with injury ruling him out from playing for the Lions. Daughter Vanessa will also be at the game. Tickets for the lunch are still available at $50 per person. Details: 0421 594 255
should the applications be granted.” McIntyre has previously said that clubs prefer an eight-team competition, each team playing a one-day and two-day match against the others. He said the restructuring of some of the lower grades to become all one-day fixtures was also an option, with the association to put the options to clubs at an affiliation meeting in August. Last season, Kyneton had junior teams in the GDCA under-11, 12 and 14s, while Malmsbury has an under-14 team. The only other Macedon Ranges club not playing seniors in the GDCA is Clarkefield. Sharks have plenty to be happy about With three of its four netball teams on top of their ladders and the other team in second, there’s not much to be unhappy about at Rupertswood Netball Club. The Sharks have had an ideal start to the Riddell District Netball League season, with only two losses between their four sides as they look to improve on last year’s results and two premierships. Sharks head coach Di McCormack said she was happy with how the four sides were looking ahead of finals. On Saturday, the B, C and under-19 sides beat Rockbank, while the A-grade team did not play because the Rams are not fielding a top side. “I can’t be unhappy with the season,” McCormack said. “We’ve lost one game in A grade while our B-grade side started slowly but has started to find their feet. “It’s the best C-grade side we’ve had and the under-19 side has surprised us. There’s some good talent through the club.” The great results have come about despite the Sharks being one of the sides most heavily impacted by players having to juggle RDNL and Victorian Netball League commitments. “There’s only a few more VNL games left, so it should settle down,” McCormack said. McCormack has called on several players to fill in and she’s hoping that those same players will play a part come RDNL finals time. They include VNL players Kirsten Daley, Zoe Davies and Natalie Billings and BNL Sunbury Lions captain Beck Anstey. “I don’t mind overloading the attacking end,” she said. “Nat is a great girl and she plays with Stacey [Northey] and Sara [Zebbo] in VNL. We’ve got Amy Starzer, who is now playing in VNL division 1 and who can also play defence.” McCormack said the competition between the top sides in A grade was closer than in previous years. The Sharks’ only loss in A grade came against Melton Centrals, when the Sharks struggled with illness and injuries. “I don’t underrate Macedon and we all know that Riddell is a top side,” she said. “Melton Centrals are up there and Romsey has gone from struggling to have a team to forming quite a good side. And you never underestimate Diggers Rest. “We need to push ourselves each week and can’t have lack of concentration against the lower sides.” The Sharks slipped from first to second at the weekend on percentage despite not playing.
