Cool cats need help They’re cute and cuddly but in need of some warmth. Woodend Veterinary Centre has called for donations of blankets to give cats that are up for adoption something to snuggle into on cold winter days and nights. A spokeswoman says the clinic is currently housing about 30 cats due to an influx of animals at the Macedon Ranges pound. “We have a larger than usual number this winter,” she says. “We will welcome blankets, towels … whatever people can spare.” For people wanting to make a more permanent difference, cats can be adopted for $195, and they come fully vaccinated, desexed and microchipped. They also come with a goodie bag, including cat food. Blankets can be left at the clinic, at the corner of Wood and Brooke streets. Tourism reeling from cuts By Matt Crossman Hume council’s decision to stop funding Daylesford and Macedon Ranges Tourism has sparked fears other local governments may follow suit. Citing a tighter budget due to the recent introduction of rate capping, the council has decided against a $30,000 contribution to DMRT, which covers six municipalities and is experiencing record visitor numbers. DMRT chairman Noel Harvey said the announcement had caught the board “on the hop”. “We are concerned that with a year to run on other funding agreements, this could be just

the start of it.” Mr Harvey said discussions with local and state government representatives were continuing. “This is a really serious issue for the tourism cash sector. While I’m not aware of any other councils in the state that have made this cut, I think Hume could be leading the charge.” Mr Harvey said the loss of funding would have a significant effect on the board’s 2016-17 plans but would not stop the reproduction of its ground-breaking visitors’ guide, said to be largely responsible for a 30 per cent increase in visitor numbers last year. “We run a break-even budget,” he said. “We worked hard to turn around a significant deficit

in recent years. We’d wanted Hume to give us another year so we could make a transition to a new funding model, but it wasn’t to be.” Hume planning and development director Kelvin Walsh said the council would continue to collaborate with DMRT on regional tourism and other promotions. “Council will also continue to work corroboratively with other tourism stakeholders to continue to promote tourism in Hume and to help our local business operators thrive,” he said. Tourism employs more than 4600 people in Hume and remains the fourth-largest financial sector with an estimated output of $1.566 billion.

Macedon Ranges council chief executive Peter Johnston said its memorandum of understanding with DMRT would run until June next year. “Like all councils, following the introduction of rate capping, council will need to carefully consider all funding arrangements as part of future budget processes to ensure our priorities are met,” he said. “With tourism being a key industry in the Macedon Ranges and across the state, the regional tourism boards are the key delivery mechanism for tourism development and marketing, and continue to be important for destinations such as ours.”

Learning, the key to future jobs By Matt Crossman

Sunbury and Gisborne, is at 5.8 per cent. Youth unemployment is 13.6 per cent. Ms Francheschi said the expo, which includes exhibitors from job agencies and universities as well as industry groups and employers, was a great chance to show the range of employment and training options available either locally or online. “The great thing is it is independent; it’s not run by an organisation with a barrow to push,” she said. Organising committee chairman Huon Damm said there had been a 10 per cent increase in exhibitors at this year’s expo.

A shifting employment landscape means Macedon Ranges and Sunbury residents need to prepare themselves to commit to lifetime learning, experts say ahead of this week’s free Sunbury and Gisborne Careers and Jobs Expo. Among the exhibitors is Macedon Ranges Further Education Centre’s Carol Francheschi, who said people could protect themselves and bounce back from workforce changes by taking opportunities to upskill or retrain. Ms Francheschi said while the move to a globalised economy and rapid technological

growth had disrupted many industries, including manufacturing, in Melbourne’s north-west, it had also created opportunities. “The great thing these days is there’s not one way,” she said. “Of course, there are challenges with traditional jobs that aren’t always there any more, but it’s also no longer one size fits all, especially when it comes to education. “If you’re looking at changing career or you’re looking at changing work, or you’re a student who’s looking at what your future options are, you really don’t have to go far to do it.” Unemployment in the north-west, including

Last year’s event attracted more than 1000 people. Like Ms Francheschi, Mr Damm said there were solid opportunities for people who knew where to look. “In the north-west, with all the growth, construction is a big one. That’s why we’ve got organisations like HIA (Housing Industry Association) involved,” he said. “There’s also opportunities in things like retail and aged care.” Wednesday’s expo is at Sunbury Memorial Hall from 2-5.30pm. Don’t taint our water, shooters warned

Multiple discoveries of empty shotgun shells at Western Water reservoirs has prompted the authority to ramp up surveillance across its service areas. Fearful of the risks to staff who may be inspecting storages, acting chief executive Graham Holt said shells had been found several times in recent months. He warned that trespassers caught entering a reservoir faced substantial penalties, including on-the-spot fines of up to $1400. “Our reservoirs are surrounded by fences and clearly marked ‘do not enter’ for a reason: to protect the safety and high quality of our drinking water,” he said. Mr Holt said dead or dying water birds and other animals could also create health risks through the introduction of microbes into the drinking water system. “Our customers don’t want people hunting, fishing or swimming in their drinking water and we don’t want anyone to get injured … or worse.” Western Water carries out regular checks of its reservoirs, including working with Victoria Police when necessary. Anyone trespassing on the utility’s property is likely to be captured on CCTV. “We certainly haven’t seen it like this for “Water is a resource shared by the some years,” he said. “It’s a shame that the road whole community,” Mr Holt said. had to be closed because there’s so much snow.” Lara Hopkins can treat widesnowy variety of health “We concerns. would ask anyone who sees AfterDrseveral crashes in cold, weta and someone illegally entering a reservoir to conditions, police urged motorists to drive to contact police.” conditions and use headlights. Country life no cure for city ills By Matt Crossman Sunbury residents have all the hallmarks of chronic lifestyle diseases cited on a new national report card. Sugar consumption is excessive, especially among teenage boys, while diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity are increasing nationally, according to the latest Australian Health Tracker released by Victoria University. These problems, as well as inactivity, are also concerning Sunbury health experts, who say businesses and councils have a role to play

in finding ways to get people moving more. With about 2000 new clients every year, many with multiple chronic conditions, Sunbury Community Health executive manager Bernie Hetherington said people need not be alone in changing risky lifestyles. “Making healthier choices is a good start, however, know that this alone isn’t enough,” she said. “Ask your workplace or community group to start looking at the small changes they can make to help everyone maintain a healthy lifestyle. “Ensuring a healthy overall environment

will have a bigger impact, and makes it easier for you and others to make the healthy choice the easy choice.” Ms Hetherington said many Sunbury businesses want to encourage healthy workplaces, with activities such as the Bendigo Bank’s Step to it, Sunbury and Western Water’s longstanding commitment to “walk the block”. “Standing desks and walking meetings are becoming more prominent in our workplaces,” she said. “Our local schools have also committed to various healthy activities and continue to seek out support for initiatives that

support not only their students but their staff and community as well.” Ms Hetherington said sporting, school and community groups also need to find healthy fundraising options. “The recent Great Gnome Hunt is one example of connecting school communities with an alternative to chocolate fundraising,” she said. Australian Health Policy Collaboration’s director, Victoria University’s Rosemary Calder, said people should not accept that Australia was now among the world’s fattest nations.

Light a way through loss Organisers of a Sunbury service to remember babies lost to miscarriage, still birth, sudden infant death syndrome and adoption hope their July 24 event will be a step towards recovery for people grieving the loss of a child. Encounter Church’s Leanne Quinlivan says emotional support, including counselling, will also be provided as part of Empty Arms-Healing Hearts, a free event put on by the Combined Christian Churches of Sunbury. “The effects can be long lasting … not just on the women, but the men as well,” Ms Quinlivan says. “I’m also a chaplain in an aged care centre, and I meet so many people who have never recovered from the loss of a baby due to miscarriage. “We wanted to do something for these people who, even in their 80s and 90s, say ‘I still think of that baby every day’.” The non-denominational service, at Sunbury

Memorial Hall from 2.30pm, will include prayers, a candle-lighting ceremony, poetry, music and reflection. Counsellors will be available to talk to people over afternoon tea. “It’s a chance for people, young and old, to recognise what’s happened and take a step forward in healing,” Ms Quinlivan says. “One in four pregnancies end in miscarriage. Our message is ‘don’t lose hope’.” Details: 0428 036 219 or email admin@ encounter.net.au Matt Crossman

Blondes go legally pink Gisborne Secondary College’s new Barcham Theatre will be awash with pink when a cast and crew of more than 70 students present a production of Legally Blonde, July 28-31. Director Natasha Davey says many of the students taking part are seasoned performers, while others are relishing the chance to contribute to a production for the first time. She says, while it’s a comedy, Legally Blonde carries an important message, especially for teens. “It’s all to do with stereotypes and finding out you can be different to what people expect you to be,” she says. Kangaroos bear brunt of roadkill By Matt Crossman Motorists are being urged to look out for wildlife, especially kangaroos, when travelling on central Victorian roads after revelations that Gisborne and Woodend are among the state’s roadkill hotspots. New data from insurer AAMI shows kangaroos are involved in the overwhelming majority of collisions with animals, contributing to nine of every 10 claims. Bendigo had the highest number of animalcollision claims in the 2015-16 financial year: 179 followed by Heathcote (124), Gisborne (94), Whittlesea (86) and Woodend (82). AAMI spokesman Michael Mills said that with the average crash costing $5123, motorists should be extra attentive behind the wheel, especially between dusk and dawn when most

collisions with animals occur. “It’s vital that drivers keep a lookout for wildlife on the road, particularly on country roads and rural and regional areas near national parks and forests,” Mr Mills said. Animal collisions peak between June and August. “Shorter days during winter mean we’re on the road more at times when animals are on the move. That, combined with poor weather and reduced visibility, makes the chances of hitting an animal more likely,” he said. Macedon Ranges highway patrol’s Sergeant Geoff Neil said motorists should resist the urge to avoid hitting small animals on the road. “It’s natural instinct, when you’ve got something in front of you, to swerve around it,” he said. “But you are substantially better off hitting the kangaroo than running off the road into a tree.”

Rain halts roadworks Recent wet weather has delayed a $6.6 million roads project, including construction of two new roundabouts at New Gisborne. VicRoads regional director Mal Kersting said works to improve the Calder Freeway-Station Road intersections would recommence “as soon as practicable”. The major project is now expected to be completed next year. “The planned closures of the Melbourne-

bound entry ramp from Station Road onto the Calder Freeway, and associated detours, are not expected to recommence until later in August,” Mr Kersting said. About 17,500 cars use the road linking Gisborne with the freeway every day. This is expected to increase to 24,000 in the next two to five years. Details: www.vicroads.vic.gov.au

Hyundai sales and service that’s safe and sure Essendon Hyundai has been showcasing the full Hyundai stable of vehicles since Barry Hopper opened the business back in 1962. Having that kind of longevity is affirmation of the approach the Hyundai team takes to customer service, which has now stepped up a notch. Service manager of more than 10 years, Glenn Ballard, explains: “Theft of number plates is sharply on the rise, with police and local councils keen to address the issue. “We decided,” Glenn says, “to offer people a free service of fixing their car number plates with the new screws, which can only be removed using licence plate

But there are many other Hyundai models on show – and sales manager Ange Burrone and her crew will be happy to show you around, have a chat over a coffee about which model best suits your budget and lifestyle, and give you all the advice you’ll need. A very competent finance department is on site to work out the best deal, and there’s a good selection of used cars (all makes and models) for sale. Glenn says his service department uses genuine Hyundai parts on all repairs, and courtesy cars or a shuttle bus are on tap to take the hassle has a free out of leaving your car for a service or repair.

“Essendon Hyundai

security screw service”

“All anyone has to do is book an appointment and we’ll do the rest. The initiative won’t halt car theft altogether, but it goes a long way to preventing spontaneous thefts and provides car owners with extra security.”

And, according to Ange, Glenn is a “good bloke”. “He’s one of those people who has genuine customer care and takes great pride in excellent workmanship. He’s a good-natured, knowledgeable man who cares about people – and our customers value his style greatly.”

The latest Hyundai to hit the showroom is the Tucson SUV, a vehicle designed to create a powerful and lasting impression, with flowing surfaces, sharp lines and a distinctive chrome-framed hexagonal grille.

o you know your Coronary Calcium Score? Coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death in Australia and is caused by a slow build-up of fatty deposits on the inner walls of the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart muscles. It’s known as atherosclerosis, and these fatty plaques can become significant enough to reduce blood flow to the heart muscles and cause angina (chest pain) or heart attack. Plaque build-up begins when people are young and could be advanced by middle age. Knowing your risk is important as it may allow you time to make positive lifestyle choices to protect your heart. Coronary artery calcium scoring is a non-invasive test that estimates the amount of plaque within your coronary arteries using a high-resolution CT scanner. By detecting the amount of coronary artery calcification within the arteries, a calcium score can be calculated which directly correlates with your risk of a heart attack. While a low calcium score does not rule out arterial disease, it does indicate a low likelihood of significant coronary blockage. If the scan detects a high calcium score, this correlates with a moderate to high risk of a heart attack. The reasons your doctor may request coronary artery calcium scoring include screening patients who have a moderate

Behind every good company ... T

hree terrific local women are considered the face of Carpet Court, according to Christine who, along with husband Peter, owns three stores in the region. “Peter and I recently opened Carpet Court in Sunbury and it’s going great guns, thanks partly to having someone like manager Julia Sutton on board,” Christine says. “And the Kyneton and Gisborne stores boast the wonderful Carol Senior and Linda Walker respectively. “These ladies head up great crews that really know all things flooring, and they’re focused on giving our customers an enjoyable, helpful and expertly guided buying experience. “We have people like David Luck who coordinates and manages the stores’ jobs, oversees all measures and plans, and manages the operations across the three stores, which keeps the business running smoothly and professionally. Samantha Robertson looks after the administration and bookkeeping for the Gisborne and Kyneton stores, and David Whitelock and Peter McKinnon look after Kyneton warehouse items. They’re the ones who organise and measure materials and ensure customers don’t wait long to get products.” Each store has an array of samples on display with stocks available at most times for floating floors, laminate, vinyl, ceramic tiles and custom-made blinds. Christine says they have some beautiful carpets and floorboards. “We have a wonderful range that taps into all the new looks and different textures,” she says. “The colour palette is right en

Don’t be a knitwit, talk to the experts I

n its six years in Kyneton, Pick Up Stitches has established itself as the go-to destination for all things knitting, sewing and patchwork, attracting crafty people from far and wide. And now, owner Sharon Boxshall adds a new yarn to her needle by opening a second shop ten minutes down the road in Tylden. And this one has a café for brekky and lunch, so catching up with the girls for a knitting session can be even better with a caffeine and cake hit. The Tylden outlet carries a huge selection of all the sought-after wool labels, from Cleckheaton’s finest Aussie merino to Shepherd, Rowan and Touch. Meanwhile, back in Kyneton, Sharon and her friendly and very knowledgeable Pick Up Stitches crew are putting on a fantastic sale of fabrics, with most wearing a 50 per cent off sticker. And right now at Kyneton there’s a big sale on discontinued yarns. Sharon says they stock more than 3000 bolts of fabric to choose from. “Our sale is the ideal time for sewers, patchworkers, quilters and knitters to replenish their supplies,” Sharon says. “And if anyone is wanting to get into these pastimes and aren’t sure where to begin, all of us love nothing better than a chat about projects, offering advice or helping solve knotty craft problems. And we run sewing and patchwork classes, too. “Knitting is rising in popularity among the younger set and, for the newbie, we have learn-to-knit kits in AFL team colours - 100 per cent Australian, machine-washable wool. female offenders a chance to learn knitting, using donated wool to craft hand-made blankets, beanies, booties and other items, which are then donated to families with premature babies through the Miracle Babies Foundation. The store is also a drop-off point for the Knit One Give One (KOGO) charity.

The place to focus on good eye care T

he GFC was rocking 2008, but that year marked an upheaval of a more positive kind for Sunbury-raised lad Brendan Myers. He’d outgrown his Goonawarra optometry practice so he took the decision that year to align himself with Specsavers and open his business in Sunbury with new partner Brian Long. “And now,” says Brendan, “we’ve taken another giant step, taking the helm at beautifully appointed, state-of-the-art premises this month, where we show off a fantastic 1200-strong range of exclusively designed eyewear and offer full-scope, up-to-the-minute optometry services. “We use high-tech digital retinal photography (DRP) for all standard eye tests, at no cost to the patient. The DRP camera captures detailed images of the back of the eye, assisting with early detection of serious eye conditions. This is particularly important for diabetics and older people, as well as children who get empathetic consultations with our paediatric optometrists.” Specsavers also collaborates with leading Australian and international designers to bring a great (and exclusive) collection of frames, in a multitude of colours, designs and materials. Think Collette Dinnigan, Tommy Hilfiger and Alex Perry, among others. And you can get two pairs from $199. Although the bulk-billing Sunbury practice is locally owned, with strong connections to the community, it has the advantage of Specsavers’ global

14 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 19, 2016

buying power, which then translates into affordability. “Yes, we have global company support but our local customers are at the heart of everything we do,” Brendan says. “We know them and they know us as all our team are locals. It’s a personalised service and we couldn’t be happier with how we’re regularly thanked by our customers for our focus on them. They also, not surprisingly, value our transparent in-store pricing. “I truly believe we’ve been able to marry exceptional clinical eye care with unbelievable value in eyewear and contact lenses. We’ve adopted the Japanese Kaizen philosophy, one that promotes constant improvement; in our case, it’s around service standards and technical skills.” Every glasses purchase at Specsavers Sunbury comes with a token to donate to charity. Purchasers can select one of the practice’s choice charities, being the Fred Hollows Foundation and the Sunbury and Macedon Ranges Specialist School. “These organisations are very important to us and we are strong supporters,” Brendan says. Slipping under the brick-paved verandah, through a glossy black wooden door and into a full-depth living space reveals the full impact of Rose Cottage’s original solid stone construction with nifty modern contemporary twists. Soft-grey carpet in the lounge area flows into the polished floorboards of the dining zone, where multi-paned french doors access the lovely outdoors. A mix of stone and white plaster walls and vaulted or angled ceilings, some original sash windows and splashes of leadlight create charm. There are three bedrooms, three stylish bathrooms and a laundry space. The black and white kitchen has an old wood stove in a stone chimney breast. The property of about 14.16 hectares in three allotments has good level pasture, fencing, sheds and a dam. It’s within minutes of Kyneton centre and an hour of Melbourne. Lifestyle or hobby farm, your choice.

On about 1.21 hectares and within a three-minute drive of shops and primary school, this handsome homestead has an expansive family-meals area, anchored by slate floors and with a wood heater set in a wall of exposed brick. A separate dining room is carpeted and has a holland blind-dressed bay window. The kitchen has a stack of blackwood cupboards, black granite benchtops, a walk-in pantry, underbench electric oven, 900mm gas cooktop and dishwasher. Five large bedrooms (one ideal as a study) includes the main with bay window, walk-in wardrobe and an en suite with spa, dual basins in blackwood vanity, and enclosed toilet. The large main bathroom also has a spa. There are three paddocks, a chook pen, orchard, vegie garden and sheds. Ducted heating and cooling, town water and a 130,000-litre water tank are other features.

At about 32 squares under the roof, this sparka-larkling beauty doesn’t stint on space, nor does it on light-filled, beautifully presented rooms. Three separate living zones comprise an open lounge room/study off the entry hall; a large, family-meals area; and a big, carpeted theatre/rumpus. The kitchen has an impressive butler’s pantry and the mod-cons. Four large bedrooms include the main with walk-in wardrobe and sleek en suite with dual basins and double shower. Gas ducted heating, refrigerated cooling, tinted windows and high ceilings contribute to seasonal comfort. There’s a covered deck facing a stylishly planted-out side yard, while the backyard has a fire pit spot, ornamental pears and low sandstone walls defining large lawns. A great shed and a double garage with internal access are inclusions on the block of about 840 square metres.

First-time buyers and investors will take note of this great starter property with a rarely seen price point. It’s within a five-minute drive or four-minute bike ride of major shops and the train station, while the house is on a big, low-maintenance block. Three bedrooms run down one side, each with painted brick walls, white-painted exposed ceiling beams, timber blinds and ceiling fan. The bathroom has a long vanity unit and a shower-over-tub combo. The laundry is separate and includes an enclosed toilet. The living room has a gas log fire, split-system and ceiling fans, while the sitting area is carpeted and the dining zone has floating floorboards. The updated kitchen has abundant cabinetry, an island bench and stainless-steel appliances. At the end of the side driveway, through a carport, there’s a gabled pergola and pavers run from here to the grassy backyard and its two sheds.

Property of the week

MOUNT MACEDON 1 Governors Drive, 3441 Keatings: 5427 2999

Price: $985,000

This lovely bagged double-brick house at The Maples was created by locals Jeske Constructions to match the original late Victorian house profile. It salutes that era but with an extension and design tweaks that are quite timeless. The result is a place full of light, space and soul. Dove-grey wall paint with white trims is a soothing consistency; rich hardwood boards and grey carpet line floors; skirts are stepped, ceilings high, windows (including picture) plentiful; and bathrooms touch lightly on Victoriana. The grounds, of about 2440 square

3

Private sale metres, include resplendent gardens so emblematic of the village. The property is aptly named The Maples, these beautiful old giants the garden stars. Along the wide, central hallway are three big bedrooms, a bathroom, separate toilet and a study, the latter ideal as a nursery or smaller fourth bedroom. The main bedroom has a fitted walk-in wardrobe and an en suite with black-and-white flooring, pedestal basin, large shower and white wall tiles. The bigger bathroom echoes that but also has a clawfoot tub. Next is a very big lounge room with

smartly framed wood heater and a glass door to a north-facing wooden deck under a maple. Then the living hub puts on a show: a bank of picture windows, french doors to the aforementioned deck, and a wall of bifolds opening to a vast east-facing deck with maples casting summer shade and permitting winter light. The big kitchen, so practical and of simple construction, has timber-trimmed laminate cabinetry which, rather than look tired, blesses the house with soul and wit. An inset granite chopping board and storage and bench space galore – big ticks.

2

2

Tassy oak stairs rise to a massive carpeted room with a glass door to a black-and-white tiled balcony (east facing) where a canopy of maples is close enough to touch. A wet bar and powder room are up here, perfect for entertainment or as a theatre room. Double glazing, multiple split-systems, solar panels, water tank and a remote-controlled double garage/workshop are other perks, as is being within a stroll of a primary school, Stanley Park, pub and Trading Post’s award-winning foodie treats. Home Sweet Home

“A TIME TO CONSIDER”

$407,000

What a very “interesting” election we have just experienced. It would be encouraging to think that our politicians may take time to consider why so many of us, the electorate, turned to the independents and the lesser parties, but maybe their egos are just too big and it will simply be the “blame game” again.

Such a pretty home is waiting for a new owner and it could be you! Situated on a very large block with excellent side access. Private, quiet and tucked behind a picket fence this could be the perfect home for the young family; retirees wanting room for a caravan or those wanting space for a big shed.

Over the last few weeks, the impact of the UK decision to leave the European Union and our own election has seen the share market take a serious hit and this may be the time to consider options for our own futures, our own retirement, our lifestyle.

An abundance of storage is a feature of this charming home. Feed the birds, enjoy the privacy and a large, well maintained block. Your “Home, sweet home’ is here. An inspection will delight. • Three large bedrooms all with built-in-robes • Spacious formal lounge/dining with cosy solid fuel heater • North facing family room with gas heater (town gas) and split system • Neat, user friendly kitchen • Very pretty bathroom • Good laundry plus mud room • Extra large double garage

Recently I met a young couple who have a “life plan” and it revolves around property. This young couple now have 9 rental properties, all of them are paying for themselves. I understand property, I do not understand the share market. But this I do know, older European migrants who came to Australia after the Second World War bought property and rebuilt their lives based on property. We have an exceptional Property Management team led by Sharyn Milburn. Sharyn has 5 years’ experience here at Chess but has 25 years’ experience as a Bank Manager - who better to guide you forward. A time to consider property for a secure future is here, now, call in for a cuppa and a chat, there will be no pressure and no obligation.

SPORT STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

Jets set sights on perfect score By Ewen McRae It is fair to say the Sunbury Jets are travelling pretty well this season. The Big V women’s division one side sits alone on top of the table, unbeaten with just three games to play before finals. A big part of that success has been star point guard Monique Stevens, who is putting up career-best numbers in her first year at the Jets and clearly relishing the chance to showcase her talents in a dominant side. Stevens joined the Jets this season after a year with now-defunct WNBL club South East Queensland Stars, where she was part of the development squad. While she couldn’t break through for a senior game, Stevens said the chance to learn from former Australian player and Stars’ coach Shane Heal was pivotal to her basketball development. “I learnt so much in a short time from Shane,” Stevens said. “Obviously, being a development league, you’re with the best players in the country so I fed off that a lot … just getting the chance to play with and against the best. “My skills and game knowledge went to a new level, and training alongside Lauren Mansfield (Australian guard) every day was great. She just had an amazing season, played every game, but I held my own against her on the practice court, which gave me a lot of confidence.” The move south for Stevens meant a reunion with Jets’ coach Kennedy Kereama, who coached her at SEABL club Lady Bandits in

32 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 19, 2016

2009. The reunion was no coincidence – when the Stars folded, Kennedy got in touch. “We had a chat about my future,” Stevens said. “He told me about his three-year plan for the Jets and how they planned to achieve success, and he set out a plan to take my basketball further, which excited me. “I want to play WNBL; that’s the big goal and where I want to get to, so that’s what Ken and I are working towards.” The move has certainly paid dividends. Not only are the Jets on track for an unbeaten season with a strong chance of the premiership, but Stevens is putting up some impressive individual numbers. She leads the league in total assists (64), and is top-five for average steals (2.6 per game) and three-point percentage (33.3 per cent). At the Jets, she’s also third for average points (13.4 per game) and average rebounds (5.9 per game). “It’s one of my better seasons across the stat lines, but really it’s a credit to my teammates. “I can make the pass, but I need them to knock down the shot for me, to get the assist, so it really is a team effort.” While firmly focused on finishing the season strongly and getting some silverware for the Jets, Stevens is also in talks with several WNBL clubs about next season. “I’ve been speaking with an agent about possibilities in Europe, too, so if the WNBL doesn’t happen I’ll probably end up over there. “At the moment both avenues are on the table. We’ll have to see how that plays out once the season is over.” Until then, the only aim is that finals title.

SPORT Hurt Romsey hangs tough Romsey ground out a fighting win over Diggers Rest in Riddell District Netball League action on Saturday to strengthen its hold on a finals place. Although a number of its players were missing through injury or playing injured, Romsey was outstanding in the early stages to open up a strong lead before withstanding a home side fightback to come away with a 47-43 win. The visitors shot out to an early lead via the new forward combination of Hope Evans and Chelsea Ross, their accuracy in front of the net rewarding the strong lead-up play further up-court. Romsey led by five points at quarter- time and nine at half-time.

But Diggers Rest wouldn’t lie down and the home side roared back in the third quarter to tie the game at the final change. Romsey’s resilience again came to the fore when it mattered most, with Evans netting nine goals in the final term to clinch the win. Romsey coach Lena Way reflected on her players’ resolve not to drop the game when Diggers Rest pushed them in the second half. “I was really happy with the first half but not happyweletthembackintoitinthethirdquarter,” she said. “But it was good to bounce back in the end. We always start well, and I think now we’re starting to finish well.” While Way was playing her cards close to her

chest on who in her side was playing injured, she said it had been a difficult game for some players. “Given we were playing with injuries from the start it was a good win. We had to nurse a few players through, but they were so courageous. “It was so important to get that win and I think it will really bolster us as we look towards finals.” Romsey will be further helped by the availability for the rest of the season of star playmaker Danielle Davidson, who set up a number of crucial plays on Saturday. Ewen McRae

Rupo stamps flag claim By Ewen McRae Stoic defence and a first-half scoring blitz were the backbone of Rupertswood’s win over Sunbury in the Riddell District Football League on Saturday. The 16.6 (102)-8.10 (58) scoreline told the story, with Rupertswood far too good in the first three quarters. Sunbury restored some pride late to win the final quarter after being held scoreless in the third. The match between the two finals aspirants started at a cracking pace, but it was Rupertswood that showed its class up forward, bagging seven goals from eight shots to open up a 28-point margin by the first break. While his side was well in front on the scoreboard, Rupertswood coach Kevin Fitzgerald was impressed with the contest provided by home side Sunbury. “It was a really good standard of footy, especially early,” he said. “There was a lot of heat in the contest and the ground was dry, so the ball was moving around pretty quick … we were happy to open up that early lead and then go on with it.” While attack was the visitors’ strong suit early in the match, it was their defence over the next two quarters that delivered the win. Sunbury scored a single goal in the second quarter and none in the third as Rupertswood stretched the lead out to 58 points at threequarter time. The match petered out to a degree in the final quarter, with Sunbury slotting five goals to trim the margin, but it was Rupertswood’s day as it consolidated its hold on fourth spot. Sunbury sits in seventh. While Todd Podolczak grabbed four goals and Brad Swallow was a stand-out through the middle for the victors, Fitzgerald was most impressed with the efforts of some of his younger brigade. “Blokes like Dylan Podolczak, Dylan Featon and Luke Cannon are all under 18 and they led the way, really, which was great to see,” the coach said. “We’ve got a tough run home, playing some very strong sides, so we’ve just got to keep winning these games against the teams around us to keep us in those finals positions.” John Corso (corked thigh) and Liam Berry (corked calf), the only injured players for Rupertswood, will be monitored during the week.

Women’s cricket

Local cricket clubs will have the chance to apply for grants to increase female cricket participation this summer after Cricket Australia last week announced a major funding boost. The governing body announced a $4 million investment in women’s cricket, with $1 million to go to local clubs, associations and secondary schools across a four year period. Of that, $50,000 will be put aside to employ full-time female participation specialists, tasked with creating jobs and establishing alternative career pathways for women in cricket. Clubs and secondary schools will be able to apply for grants of $2000 per year.

BFL

Sunbury Lions triumphed over Redan in their crucial Ballarat Football League clash on Saturday, leapfrogging into third place on the ladder on percentage. While the Lions dominated the shots on goal for the first half, their inaccuracy kept Redan in the contest until after half-time. Sunbury’s 3.10 at the long break looked like it could cost them, but they found their range in the second half to end the game with a 11.17 (83)-7.7 (49) win. Goals were shared around, with Jack Sullivan and Jack Landt both kicking three. Sunbury is now the highest ranked of three teams on 36 points, with North Ballarat City and Redan close behind on percentage.

EDFL

East Sunbury slipped to its ninth loss of the EDFL division 2 season on Saturday, hurting its slim finals chances in the process. Taking on fourth-placed Keilor Park, East Sunbury struggled from the start as they kicked just one goal in the first quarter to the home side’s 5.5 before slipping further behind as the game progressed as they went down 15.13 (103)-9.9 (63). The loss has East Sunbury in seventh place, but it remains a minute chance of finals with a congested ladder leaving them three games out with four games remaining..

Soccer

Gisborne fought back to salvage a point over Melbourne Lions in its State League 5-West clash on Saturday at Skinner Reserve. While the Lions have struggled for much of the season, they took a lead at the 20-minute mark to put the pressure back onto Gisborne. The visitors pushed hard for an equaliser, and they got it in the 78th minute. When Sean Malloy found the back of the net, and with neither side able to break the deadlock they were forced to share the points.

Big V

Sunbury Jets continued their unbeaten season on Sunday, overpowering third-placed Latrobe City. The 78-53 win was built on the back of 21-points to Monique Stevens and 10 to Alex Darby, while their defence stood firm all match. Stevens continued her strong form, shooting at 100 per cent from the free throw line, and hitting four crucial three-point shots to be the difference between the sides.
