The Leach family earlier this year. (Supplied)
Help for a family hurting By Esther Lauaki The Gisborne community is rallying behind a family of eight who have the fight of their lives ahead of them. Sunbury mother of six Renee Leach was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumour in February. Surgeons removed half the tumor earlier this year, and the surgery has left Mrs Leach with memory loss, language difficulties and vision problems. No further surgery is possible because of the risk of further permanent damage to her brain.
Mrs Leach must now have daily chemo and radiotherapy treatments. The family has had its share of devastating health issues over the past decade and a half. Mrs Leach’s husband, Mark, required a heart transplant in 2002 and, within a month of his surgery, the couple welcomed 13-week premature triplets. Mr Leach said their church community at Gisborne Church of Christ had rallied around them during their times of greatest need. The church will host a trivia night on Friday (July 29) to raise money for urgent medical expenses, as well as for the children’s schooling
and extracurricular activities. Triplets Monique, Joshua and Stephanie, 13, and their siblings, Aimee, 11, Eden, 7 and Zoe, 4, all take part in ballet, horse-riding and swimming. “The support that we’ve received has been overwhelming,” Mr Leach said. “Renee’s diagnosis has been a big shock to the whole family. “But we just take things one day at a time. “Our kids are amazing. They’re all doing remarkably, especially the older ones. They all do their part.” Church minister Paul Crothers is urging the community to dig deep to help the Leachs.
“The response from the community has been wonderful,” he said. “Only so much can be raised from selling tickets, so we are seeking donations of prizes to be raffled or auctioned on the night. “And gift vouchers would be greatly appreciated.” An online crowdfunding page has also been set up to assist their efforts. To donate to the Gisborne church’s GoFundme campaign, go online at https:// www.gofundme.com/reneebrain For information about the trivia night, email paulc.gcofc@outlook.com

Licence to cull shuts shelter By Esther Lauaki The owners of a Pastoria East wildlife shelter have closed their doors after 30 years because they believe the risk to kangaroos released from their care is too great. A neighbouring farmer, whose permit to cull kangaroos was suspended in June after claims of cruelty, had his permit reinstated by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning [DELWP] last week. Authorities suspended the man’s permit to shoot kangaroos on his property after being slammed for the way the native animals were being culled.
An investigation was launched after at least 24 kangaroos were shot, with groups including the Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network claiming none of the kangaroos had been shot in the head, as decreed by the national code of practice. Pastoria East Wildlife Shelter operators Marcus Ward and Christine Litchfield are calling for the DELWP investigating team to be stood down. Mr Ward said thousands of dollars had been spent on the kangaroos’ rehabilitation. “We are devastated,” he said. “We’ve been running the shelter for 30 years. We’ve had to shut our doors this week because we can’t be
taking animals in when there is a danger they could be killed. “We are shocked at this blatant abrogation of responsibility by DELWP. What sort of a message does this send to other landholders who want to cull kangaroos … that cruelty issues are not taken seriously? “At the very least, we expected DELWP to revoke the permit for this breach of the code.” The pair has vowed to do everything possible to stop the culling of kangaroos. “We’ve been trying to engage the farmer to pursue non-lethal methods of control, but neither the department nor the council is listening to us,” Mr Ward said.
“We believe the department and the council are 100 per cent focused on culling. The process is very skewed towards the permit holder, and we see no considerations for us as a wildlife shelter. There’s no appeals process.” The DELWP probe, which wound up on July 19, found insufficient evidence and no legal basis to prosecute the farmer. A spokesman said all non-lethal methods of control had been exhausted. The farmer’s permit was reinstated with extra conditions that require him to engage a professional shooter, give DELWP 48 hours’ notice before shootings start, and to properly document the shootings afterwards.
Women meet to talk council
Go, go, go, it’s en-‘lightning’
The call is out for women interested in standing for council to step up and learn the ins and outs of local government. Macedon Ranges council and the Victorian Local Governance Association will host the GoWomenLG2016 forum at Kyneton this Thursday. The forum is aimed at encouraging and informing women with a view to increasing female representation in local government across Victoria. Current and former female councillors will form a panel to discuss what’s involved in being a councillor and the resources available to assist candidates. Macedon Ranges councillor Jennifer Anderson urged more women to get involved in local politics. “These forums are intended to inform and educate, and provide a launch pad for women into their journey as a candidate,” Cr Anderson said. “We know it’s important for candidates to discuss their ideas and plans with friends and family, and build a support network. “This forum will help them with ideas and strategies to do that. It’s an opportunity to discuss the role of local government and why it’s important for women with applicable workplace, committee or governance skills to participate. “You may be surprised what skills gained in areas outside local government translate well into the council setting.” GoWomenLG2016 is from 6.30pm-9pm at Kyneton Mechanics Institute. Salesian College students are making the final tweaks in preparation for their “systematic, hydromatic, ultramatic” school production of Grease, which hits the stage at the Clocktower Centre, Moonee Ponds, this weekend. A cast of 70 students, with another 15 behind the scenes, and about 20 staff have been rehearsing since February. Year 11 student Emily Marshall plays Sandy while two students, Braden Mercieca and Isaac McKenzie, share the role of Danny Zuko. Performing arts co-ordinator Tanika Richards says she’s excited to see the students’ performances come to life on stage. “As a teacher, it’s exciting to watch the kids develop and grow in confidence. “Watching them from the time they audition and then go into rehearsals, and now to get ready for showtime, is very fulfilling.” Doors open on Salesian College’s Grease on Friday, July 29, at 7pm, with two more shows on Saturday, July 30, at 1pm and 7pm. Planning time for the Rock ‘‘
Everyone has the best interest of Hanging Rock at - Luke Spielvogel heart

“A comprehensive and exciting consultation program is being prepared to ensure that everyone can have their say on a future vision for the Hanging Rock precinct. “We’re looking to incorporate social media and also free entry to Hanging Rock Reserve for a specified period during the consultation.” Meanwhile, a report to set up a new advisory committee for Hanging Rock will go to the council’s July 27 meeting. The report recommends a new name, composition and role for the committee. Council will consider seeking expressions of interest for new committee members, with a view to making appointments by the end of November. Visitors to Hanging Rock could be in for a ‘freebie’ as Macedon Ranges council calls for the public to have their say on shaping a new masterplan for the tourism precinct. The council is proposing to open the gates for free entry while the masterplan is being drafted – between now and the end of the year – and it will also launch a social media campaign to encourage people to visit. Consultants for the council, as well as government and indigenous representatives, business stakeholders and residents met last Tuesday to discuss a long-term vision for the precinct. Hanging Rock Action Group spokesman Luke Spielvogel said the meeting had been years coming. “We had our first combined session with council and interested groups and, for the first time in three years, we were in the same room together,” he said. “Everyone there has the best interest of Hanging Rock at heart, but what those interests are may look a bit different, depending on who you ask. “On the ground at Hanging Rock, we’re seeing the same things happening … but we’ll engage in the consultation and contribute as best we can to the masterplan.” Planning and landscape experts Village Well and Aspect Studios have also kicked off the first of a number of meetings with user groups and agencies over coming months. The draft masterplan will be out for public
comment by the end of this year, with the plan due to be finalised by April next year. Macedon Ranges mayor Graham Hackett encouraged people to get involved in developing the new masterplan. “Council is keen for direct interest groups, users of the precinct and the broader community to be involved in this process,” Cr Hackett said.
In daffodils, hope blooms Not only does the daffodil herald the beginning of spring, it’s seen as an international symbol of hope for people affected by cancer. This year is the 30th anniversary of the Cancer Council’s annual daffodil campaign which raises money for research, prevention programs and support services. Since its inception in 1986, more than $137 million has been raised nationally through Daffodil Day. In that time, the five-year cancer survival rate has increased by about 20 per cent, a support
line has been created (13 11 20), and there are many new support services and programs. To coincide with Daffodil Day this year, Janice Le Sueur will fill her florist shop with more than 600 of the sunny blooms. She hopes the scale of her order will match the significance of the Cancer Council’s celebration this year. Daffodil Day will be celebrated in Australia on Friday, August 26. Alexandra Laskie

Call for ideas on town makeover By Esther Lauaki Residents can now find out more about plans – and add to them – for the makeover of Romsey’s town centre. A Romsey Streetscape Project Concept plan was presented to a community meeting hosted by the town tourism association last week. Romsey Region Business and Tourism Association president Jenny Stillman says the group wants feedback and fresh ideas for the plan, which includes works that started at the end of last year.
The project was launched to co-ordinate the rejuvenation of the town centre and boost tourism in the Romsey area. “Plantings have commenced with some lovely crepe myrtles planted as part of the Main Street trees and gardens working group initiative,” Ms Stillman said. “The lighting and roads working group is continuing to work on feature street lamp design … and the Five Mile Creek working group is involved in concept plan development for this precinct. “In developing the concept, various issues have been raised, including lighting and
roads, and big-ticket items like heritage buildings,” she said. “Increasing local amenities and increasing attractiveness to people living in Romsey and to visitors is the main aim.” Ms Stillman said the planning process had been underwritten by a strong working relationship with Macedon Ranges council. “The council has been very helpful and collaborative with us on this project,” she said. The council has set aside $150,000 in its budget and will support the group’s
application to Regional Development Victoria for a grant for the Romsey project. “With the council’s contribution and a possible Regional Development Victoria grant, we hope to be able to progress this project significantly this year,” Ms Stillman told Star Weekly. The Romsey streetscape plan will be on display outside Romsey IGA and at the Romsey Community Hub from this Saturday (July 30). Feedback and new ideas are welcome. More details: www.romsey.org.au
Finding the superhero “I thought long and hard … and at first I thought, easy, I’ll give up coffee. But coffee isn’t really my thing so I thought, what about alcohol? That’s going to be a tougher one.” She said the cause was “something very close to my little family’s heart”. “Awegust for Awetism helps us to understand a bit more what he [Jarvis] goes through every day so that we can help him to understand that ‘superhero’ within him,” she said. Ms Boland hopes to raise $1000 for the I CAN Network and also raise awareness of autism within schools. Jarvis’s classmates at Riddells Creek Primary School are supporting Awegust for Awetism by hosting a superhero and Olympic sports day on August 5. Riddells Creek mum Lauren Boland wants her son Jarvis to know that there’s nothing he can’t achieve. It was her son’s diagnosis with autism, a year ago, that is inspiring Ms Boland to take part in Awegust for Awetism next month. The month-long campaign challenges participants to achieve personal goals to raise funds for the I CAN Network, Australia’s first social enterprise run predominantly by people on the autism spectrum. “I’m doing this to show him I can do anything I put my mind to, just like he can,” Ms Boland said. The mother of two will kick off the month by giving up alcohol and social media and will set herself more challenges in coming weeks. “Something I will struggle with – just as people with autism do on a daily basis in our society – is being told that I can’t do something,” she said.

Smart is the art of waste Budding young Sunbury artist Samantha Reffold will soon have her work displayed on ‘smart’ solar bins around Hume. The 10-year-old Killara Primary School pupil won a $500 voucher for her school to spend on an environmental project as part of Hume council’s ‘Smart bins, stop litter’ design competition. The new solar-powered public ‘smart’ bins will compress waste by up to five times and send a text message to council officers when the bin is almost full to ensure that they are emptied before being completely filled. Three men have been charged after a burglary at the Kyneton Telstra shop last week. Police attended the Mollison Street business at 2.40am and allegedly found six men in balaclavas outside. Four of the men fled in a vehicle while the other two fled on foot. A police car was rammed as it tried to intercept the fleeing vehicle. Two men who ran off were arrested, one with the help of the dog squad. Two Broadmeadows men, aged 20 and 23, were charged with theft and burglary and bailed to appear at court at a later date. A Truganina man, 18, was charged with burglary and theft and remanded to appear in court on August 1. A fourth man was arrested near Hadfield with help from the dog squad.

One of the best things about life beyond retirement and into the golden years can be simple guilt-free ‘me time’, when you often get to do what you want, when you want. It’s also a stage in life when a love for reading can be indulged. It may be a habit you dropped amid the busyness of life, climbing career ladders, tending to children and all the other must-dos that drive younger lives. Whether it’s a second time around with an old love, or you come to one of life’s true pleasures as a reading newbie, here are a few titles you may want to get into this year: 1. All the Light We Cannot See, by Anthony Doerr Ten years in the writing, Doerr’s ambitious work shines a light on people trying to be good to one another, even against all the odds. It centres on a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths cross as they try to survive World War II’s devastation in occupied France. It took out the 2015 Pulitzer for fiction. 2. The Secret Chord, by Geraldine Brooks Sydney-born Pulitzer winner Brooks powerfully retells the story of the Biblical King David’s rise to power and his fall from grace. It’s a vivid story of faith, family, desire and power that brings David magnificently alive. 3. A Long Lunch, by Simon Hoggart This is a collection of gossipy, funny, telling and even startling anecdotes about other people. It’s described as the perfect toilet book, and that’s meant as high praise. It sounds like a good choice for the man of the house … 4 . All Passion Spent, by Vita Sackville-West Published in 1931, this is one of Sackville-West’s most popular works of fiction, later adapted for TV by the BBC. It’s a gentle read, one that addresses people’s control over their own lives, and recommended for curling up and getting lost in an older time.

This sophisticated beauty on about 1.1 hectares of landscaped gardens, natural bush and paddocks includes a two-bedroom guest house (with double garage separating it from the main house) and a peerless entertainer’s set-up. An indoor pool and 10-person spa sits under a pitched ceiling with Vergolas. Anchored by glossy tiles and enclosed via at least six sets of bifolds to decks, the vast room is open to another with amazing bar, commercial kitchen, surround-sound and projector screen. The house has four bedrooms, including the main where the en suite is decked in marble, with double shower and dual basins. A tiled living room couples with a smart family-meals zone around the storage-rich black-and-white kitchen. The laundry adjoins a fab utility room. Ducted heating and cooling, video intercom and two split-systems are internal features. Then there’s outside …
Finished with a neutral colour scheme and upholding a modern design, all that’s needed here is some garden flourishes. By contrast, the inside has been beautifully designed. There are four bedrooms, three have built-in wardrobes and the main has a walk-in wardrobe and an en suite. There’s a lounge room and a sitting room/parents retreat – the open-plan living area incorporates a stunning kitchen, with a high ceiling that captures the light and has sliders opening to the north. The light-filled kitchen features stainless-steel appliances and an large butler’s pantry on gleaming timber floors. The house has ducted gas heating, a laundry with linen cupboard and a remote-controlled double garage with internal access.

On a block of about 1600 square metres, this is a place that will appeal to young families, retirees wanting room for a caravan, and tradies and hobbyists who want that big shed. The house has three large, carpeted bedrooms, each with a built-in wardrobe, and they share a neat bathroom. The spacious lounge-dining room is warmed by a wood heater, and the north-facing family room has a gas heater (town gas connected) and split-system. The kitchen has plenty of storage, wall oven and dishwasher. The laundry couples with a handy mud room. A covered concrete area is the spot for outdoor relaxation – it looks over a huge backyard with mature shrubs, trees and lots of lawn. The property is around the corner from Romsey Primary School and Romsey Recreation Reserve, and there’s an integrated double garage.
On about 879 square metres, within a walk of shops, schools, kindergarten and train station, this ‘budget buy’ is perfect for first-home buyers and families wanting a tree-change. Latte wall paint, white trims and beige carpet are the decor of good-sized rooms, including three bedrooms, each with built-in wardrobes. The main bedroom has access to the two-way tiled bathroom. The laundry is separate and includes an enclosed toilet. The carpeted, L-shaped lounge-dining room has a fireplace and a split-system, while the family-meals area (with wood heater) is open to the kitchen, where there’s a servery bench, pine cabinetry, wall oven and 900mm gas cooktop. A covered deck at the rear looks over tropical plantings, with lawn beyond. Two garden sheds and a carport are handy inclusions at a property with lots of scope to add personal touches.

GISBORNE SOUTH 37 Namnan Way, 3437 Brad Teal Gisborne: 5428 2800
Price: $950,000 – $980,000
In highly regarded Birchwood Rise, this Victoriana tribute was built a while back by Craftsman Homes to high standards of replication. It’s more recently been tweaked to deliver a more contemporary edge via an extension and a freshened-up interior colour palette. The residence, while embellished with all the period glam, is nevertheless a family-oriented spread, borne out by its four large bedrooms and two sprawling living rooms – not to mention the block of about 4047 square metres with a vast backyard, Gisborne and Sunbury school buses on the doorstep and a primary school and Calder

Freeway access just down the road. The house has a traditional Victorian hallway, with Tassy oak underfoot, roses and decorative cornices on a high ceiling, a corbelled arch and very deep skirts – most of which are carried throughout. Three bedrooms flank the hall, including the main where period features are celebrated, and white roman blinds dress three sash windows that form a bay. There’s a walk-in wardrobe, and an en suite with leadlight window, marble-topped wooden vanity unit and frameless shower. The fourth bedroom – or large study – is off the family room, and the big
main bathroom has a clawfoot tub under gorgeous leadlight windows and a marble-topped vanity unit. Three of five split-systems are in the bedrooms, the others control the living rooms’ climate. At hall’s end comes a carpeted lounge room with wood heater, while multi-paned french doors open from here to a rumpus room with floorboards, angled ceiling and two sets of bifolds to outdoors. The inviting kitchen and casual meals area, under a vaulted, white-painted timber ceiling, has a stack of blackwood cabinetry, an induction cooktop and Miele dishwasher.

Well-designed, connected outdoor spaces are generously distributed among a covered deck lounging area, another deck that’s open to sunshine and a covered pergola above stamped concrete. These great spots take in unimpeded views of rolling, tree-studded hills. Inclusions are a detached double garage, a Colorbond double garage-workshop with three-phase power and three water tanks (one at 110,000 litres supplies filtered water to the house) – and the property shares access to a community bore. SPORT Clubs back Malmsbury, Kyneton move Malmsbury and Kyneton cricket clubs will field both senior and junior teams in Gisborne and District Cricket Association this season. As previously reported by Star Weekly Weekly, both clubs put in applications for their senior teams to join the competition this year. Last Monday night, current senior teams voted unanimously in favour of the move from Castlemaine and District Cricket Association. Malmsbury president Ed Kosmac said making the move to the GDCA made sense to provide a pathway from juniors through to seniors. Both clubs already have junior teams in the GDCA. “We had more than 90 per cent of members vote in favour of the move and now the clubs have supported it,” Kosmac said. “Geographically, it has been hard having the teams in two different competitions.
“It was difficult when you’ve got parents driving their kids to games in the morning to then travel in a different direction to play themselves. “We had no pathway and were in no-man’s land. This will give us more freedom to grow our club.” Kosmac said Malmsbury is looking to field one junior and two senior teams next season. He said the club wants to attract new players, and the fact it is the only club in the association to have a turf wicket should make it an attractive place to play. “A lot of players love playing on turf, and they haven’t been able to in the GDCA,” Kosmac said. “Turf wickets were one of the items at the general meeting, and they’re trying to encourage clubs to start looking at turf wickets. There are a couple of clubs interested, but
having them in place is a while off.” New GDCA president and former association secretary Rob McIntyre said the two clubs would bring the number of senior clubs to 20. He said it was good to continue to grow the competition at the northern end of the region, with most of the recent growth in the south. McIntyre said they would put options out about grading and what the structure may look like in the next week or so, before meeting to discuss these on August 15. What grades both Malmsbury and Kyneton will be in is still to be decided, he said. “We like our top teams in be in the top two grades, but we want to make sure our teams are competitive. “Kyneton might be around C-grade and Malmsbury possibly in D-grade, but we still have to sort that out,” McIntyre said
Hawks take off at last By Tara Murray Woodend-Hesket returned to the winners’ list on Saturday for the first time since May in the Riddell District Football League. It has been tough going for the Hawks this season, with a number of key players suffering season-ending injuries. As a result, finals ambitions went quickly out the window. On Saturday, they faced Melton Centrals, a side which has struggled as much as they have. The Hawks, wearing the old Hesket jumper, set the tempo early and were never headed in the 12.17 (89)-4.4 (28) win. Hawks coach Ross Sleight set a simple goal early … to win the first quarter, something the Hawks hadn’t done in four matches. “The aim of the game was to win the first quarter and then take that into the second and third,” he said. “Sometimes when we’re up and about the boys tend to get a bit lazy but they were very good today. “To get back on the winners’ list was not only good for the side, but the supporters who are here week in and week out and the young guys who have come up and taken the spot of the injured blokes.” The biggest difference between the two sides, was that the Hawks were prepared to work harder to win the ball. Sleight said having the younger players in the side had been a big part of it. “We knew once we got on top of them and broke their back they would stop running as they have a lot more older bodies,” he said. “Our average age is under 23 and we knew once we got on top we would break their back and that’s what we did. “Our motto is tough and hard. The under-18 kids are a lot skinnier than everyone else but when the footy is there to be won they put their heads and bodies over the ball and they win it.” Phillip Shaw, who kicked two goals, was best on ground, while Blake Laverie, Matthew Quinn and Alex Shepherdley were other standouts. The win is just the third of the season for the Hawks, who remain in ninth position. Sleight said the aim now was to try to play as many younger players as possible. “We were looking to make finals this year, but 11 of the starting 22 have been out for the last two months and probably the rest of the year. “It’s pretty disappointing but, in saying that, it’s giving the young blokes the chance to stand up and play some great footy.” In other results, Diggers Rest remains undefeated after beating Sunbury Kangaroos, Rupertswood was too strong for Romsey and Broadford defeated Lancefield.

Sharks stitch up finals hope A dominant second quarter ensured Rupertswood accounted for fellow Riddell District Netball League finals contender Romsey at the weekend. For three of the four quarters, nothing split the second-placed Sharks and fifth-placed Redbacks, with experience getting the Sharks across the line 56-43. Scores were level at quarter-time, with both sides making the most of their opportunities. Sharks’ pair Stacey Northey and Amy Starzer missed one goal between them, while Redbacks’ shooters Hope Evans and Bronwyn Blair went at 100 per cent accuracy. The second quarter proved to be the match winner for the Sharks, opening up a 13-goal lead at half-time. The Redbacks only had seven attempts for the quarter. While the Redbacks matched it with the Sharks in the second half, with scores levelled for those two quarters, the damage had already been done. The two goal shooters were best on court for their respective sides. Northey scored 31 goals for the Sharks, while Evans scored 29 goals from 33 attempts. In other results, Lancefield made sure of finals contention with a win over Broadford. After a 13-4 first quarter, the Tigers consolidated at 47-25. With most players back on the field, it was goal attack Rhys Carter-Coleman Tukapua who was best on court. The Tigers remain one game outside the top six, behind a Diggers Rest fresh from a big win over Sunbury Kangaroos. The Burras were in control all day at Boardman Reserve, and despite the Kangaroos producing one of their best scores of the season, the Burras won 54-27. Melton Centrals remain focused on third place after beating Woodend-Hesket. Despite missing captain Jessica May and defenders Catherine Hocking and Melissa Laird, a Centrals’ win was never in doubt, and final scores were 61-33. Vanessa Seddon was the dominant shooter, scoring 52 goals for Centrals. For the Hawks, Chelsea Tobin was best, while Madeline Staresina shot 22 goals. Ladder leaders Riddell and third-placed Macedon maintained ladder positions after byes, as did Wallan. The five other finals contenders – Rupertswood, Melton Centrals, Lancefield, Romsey and Diggers Rest – have a bye this weekend. Tara Murray 29 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 26, 2016

Lions overcome Bloods in wet, muddy conditions Sunbury Lions took the points against Melton in difficult conditions in the Ballarat Football League on Saturday. The Lions were the cleaner of the two sides in wet and muddy conditions at Macpherson Park and it showed on the scoreboard as they won 13.16 (94)-6.6 (42). The Lions led early and were able to extend a nine-point quarter-time lead to 23 points at half-time. They stepped up their pressure in the second half and restricted the Bloods’ ball use and opportunities in front of goal. While they weren’t able to extend the lead in the third quarter, the Lions restricted the Bloods to just one inside-50 in the last.
Lions coach Rick Horwood said that while his side could have won by more, he was a happy coach to have got the job done in those conditions. Most pleasing for Horwood was again the even spread across the board. “We’re building at the right time and everything seems to be going well,” he said. “The midfield dominated once again and we’ve been working hard on defence. “Ben McInneny had his best game at the club, while his brother, Jesse, is forming a good ruck combination with Kova [David Kovacevic].” The standout though was Alik Magin, who was best on ground with more than 40 possessions.
Magin is one of the favourites for the league’s B&F award after being named best on ground six times, including the past three weeks. Horwood was also full of praise for Jack Sullivan, who is finding his feet after missing last season. “It’s good to see after he spent so much time out injured,” Horwood said. “He’s starting to find his straps and is an important cog in the team and one of the hardest players at the footy.” The third-placed Lions have the bye this week. Horwood said only three players were on the injury list – Nathan Wood, James Rizk and Jack Sheahan.
Wood was a late withdrawal on Saturday after being kicked in the shin at training. It’s hoped he and VFL-listed player Daniel Toman will be available to play against Melton South the week after the bye. Toman needs to play one more game to qualify for finals. Meanwhile the Lions’ A-grade netballers maintained their fourth spot with victory against Melton. After leading by one goal at half-time, the Lions shot away in the second half, winning 56-39. Amy Starzer shot 44 goals, with midcourter Sally Portbury was best on court. Tara Murray
Double chance for Sunbury girls teams
Kyneton’s Hamish Govan steadies in a bid to see off Kangaroo Flat defenders on Saturday. (Shawn Smits)
Kyneton’s finals resolve By Tara Murray Having won an eight-point game with flying colours at the weekend, Kyneton is facing another, just as important, game this week in the Bendigo Football League. With four teams fighting for two finals spots, every win is vital for the Tigers on the run home. On Saturday, they moved into fourth spot and ahead of Kangaroo Flat with a hard-fought 10.10 (70)-5.16 (46) win. The Tigers led at every break and their ability to win the contested ball in close proved important – as did finding better options in the forward line. Tigers coach Luke Beattie knew a win against the Kangaroos was integral to their final hopes. “The boys started well and I knew they were there to play,” he said. “The intensity and the contested ball was a main element in the game we controlled to give our forwards first opportunity. 30 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 26, 2016
“Nathan Thompson was the best of the forwards, kicking three goals in conditions that many people thought wouldn’t suit a key forward like him.” While Thompson was a force in front of goal, many others struggled. The Tigers won the game despite having one less scoring shot. “It was difficult to kick goals,” Beattie said. “Guys weren’t making the distance from 30 to 40 metres out. “We were able to get the ball in more dangerous areas, 10 to 15 metres in front of goal, and able to get handballs out to our smalls forwards.” The Govan brothers, Josh and Hamish, were among the best for the Tigers, along with Nick Higginson, Max Sullivan and Rhys Magin. The Tigers this week face sixth-placed Eaglehawk. Beattie said Ethan Foreman and Michael Rainey, who missed Saturday’s match, would be assessed during the week and could possibly return.
Star Ben Weightman is a couple of weeks away after doing a hamstring. “It’s a week by week proposition,” Beattie said on securing a finals berth. “The Eaglehawk game is an eight-point game. If we win, we go two games ahead of them … if we lose, we are equal on points and it’ll be a real fight. If we win we can set ourselves for finals, if not it could be a challenge.” Eaglehawk enters the game on the back of a big win against Gisborne. It was all the Hawks as they easily accounted for the Bulldogs 17.11 (113)-4.6 (30). James Fraser was the only multiple goal-scorer for the Bulldogs. Trent Crosbie and Pat Trotta were named best in the loss. Meanwhile, in A-grade netball, Kyneton drew with Kangaroo Flat and Gisborne defeated Eaglehawk. The win moves the Bulldogs into the top five, while the Tigers are two points outside the top five.
Sunbury Lions Youth girls have exceeded expectations in the Western Youth girls competition this year. Fielding two sides for the first time, the Lions have made both the under-18 and under-15 finals. Youth girls coach Ron Sikora said that while the Lions had been an under-18 powerhouse for many years, the instant success in the under-15s came as a shock. “We put in a big amount of work and, to the girls’ credit, it has been a massive success,” he said. “We were just happy to fill an under-15 team and possibly win a couple of matches.” On Sunday, the under-15 girls played in the elimination final against Caroline Springs after finishing third on the ladder. Sikora was confident going into the match after beating Caroline Springs the last time they played despite having a couple of key players missing. And his confidence was warranted, as the Lions won by 81 points. Sikora said that no matter how the side went in the finals, they had become winners already just by making the finals. The side will now play Westmeadows, who they defeated earlier in the season, in a semi final on Sunday. The under-18 side had the weekend off after finishing second on the ladder. They face Keilor in a semi-final on Sunday. Sikora said the aim was to go further than last year. “The girls have played since the inception and been in 11 grand finals,” he said. “The last two years are the only years we haven’t played in the grand final. “We’ve already achieved the goal for the year, which was to make a semi-final, instead of an elimination final. “Hopefully, we can go one game further and make the grand final.” Sikora said he hoped the success of having two sides would lead to an under-12 girls team next year. He said they had already started putting the word out at Auskick centres. The Lions’ senior women’s side sealed its finals spot in the Victorian Women’s Football League division 2 competition with one round remaining by beating Cranbourne on Saturday. The Lions dominated the scoreboard winning, 8.10 (58)-1.0 (6). Iesha Lauaki kicked three goals, while Peita Price was best on ground. The Lions are in fourth spot, a game and 65 percentage points ahead of South Morang. Tara Murray
