By Esther Lauaki Unresolved planning issues will spill over to October elections after Macedon Ranges council ignored the advice of an independent panel about its plans to rezone farmland for hobby farms. Council’s plan to allow smaller lots and more houses on rich agricultural land near Kyneton and Romsey was rejected by the panel appointed by the planning minister to assess it. The independent panel found rezoning farmland at Kyneton south to rural living was “premature”, and could exacerbate existing flooding issues. Proposed zoning changes north of Romsey were also criticised for targeting high-quality farmland and environmentally important landscapes. But council dismissed the panel’s advice at its July meeting, despite the vocal opposition of residents. Councillors then determined, in an 8-1 vote opposed by Cr Jennifer Anderson, to split their strategic plan, known as amendment C110, to allow subdivisions to go ahead in areas other than Kyneton south and Romsey north. It will now seek approval from the minister to increase rural living lots at Gisborne, New Gisborne, Gisborne South and Riddells Creek. Further work will be undertaken on the Kyneton and Romsey areas before the council considers these as a ‘part two’ of its strategy. A state planning department spokesman said the department will now need to make “a full and thorough

analysis” of the council’s deviation from the panel’s advice. The delays will mean any decision on the rezoning will now be made by the council elected in October. Kyneton south landowner David McKelvie has long opposed the plans to rezone farmland in the area. He said flooding of his property last week only supported the independent panel’s concerns. “A significant section of this land is a basin, and it is thoroughly saturated and waterlogged throughout. “The black pug clay in the basin is highly unstable, deeming it not suitable for shed and dwellings … [it’s] not capable of absorbing effluent, meaning that the effluent will end up in Lake Eppalock, along with whatever else is being discharged from the now over-capacity Kyneton sewerage ponds. “This is agricultural land, where stock can graze the basin in the summer, reducing the fire risk, and seek dry ground … during the winter.” Mr McKelvie questioned whether council officers should handle planning decisions of such significance. “Who is working with the landowners to take this proposal forward?” Mr McKelvie said. “The concept of developing 100 residential blocks out here is an absolute misguided nonsense, and does not in any way align with the original council objective. “I agree there is potential for some housing settled on the foothills, but the basin is not feasible.”

Hilltop life not for all: councillor By Esther Lauaki Property prices will drop if public housing is included in the redevelopment of Victoria University’s former campus on Jacksons Hill, Hume councillor Jack Medcraft claims. Councillor Medcraft said he is concerned that residential redevelopment of the historic precinct would include “commission housing”, which would devalue neighbouring properties. “When you’re talking about subdivision and developing that land, I believe it would,” he said.

“I would oppose commission housing at that site, and putting in high density housing. Residents at Jacksons Hill don’t pay as much as [they] do to live up there, to then have their property devalued because of commission housing nearby.” He said he would prefer a trades centre or a customs training facility in any redevelopment of the site, which was originally the Sunbury Lunatic Asylum, to take advantage of its heritage buildings and grounds. But Sunbury MP Josh Bull, who tabled a petition in June with more than 1200 signatures

calling for government protection of the 35-hectare site, is determined Jacksons Hill is retained for education and community uses. The petition was compiled by Sunbury Asylum Alliance and Sunbury Community Progress Association, which are pushing for a proper masterplan for the site. Mr Bull said residents need certainty and a plan to guide future development, and a masterplan would identify the best uses. And he would did not rule out including public housing in that masterplan, nor emergency housing.

“We are taking action,” he said. “It is clear to me that a masterplan is required to ensure that the site is protected,” he told Star Weekly Weekly. Uses for the site need to reflect “the current and future needs of the Sunbury community”, Mr Bull said. He said he has asked Planning Minister Richard Wynne to lead a whole-of-government approach to the Jacksons Hill redevelopment. He said it is also important that the government works closely with Hume council, nearby residents and the Sunbury community.

The gift of life is about the most significant offer any person can make to another. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas signed up to the Australian organ donor register last week as part of Donate Life, and she wants Lancefield and Romsey residents to do the same. “The average wait time for organ donation is between six months and four years,” she said. “This is something that can be changed, simply by registering and having a conversation with your loved ones.” Ms Thomas is very aware of just how valuable and life-changing blood and organ donations are. “Every time I visit sick children in hospital, or meet a local recipient of an organ donation, I am reminded that, as healthy individuals, we have the capacity to make real change in people’s lives.” More than 1200 Australians received transplant organs from 435 donors last year. While most Australians say they are willing to donate organs, their families need to be sure of their loved one’s wishes. The Australian Organ Donor Register helps families understand what their loved one wants. Family permission is required before any organ donation goes ahead, regardless of whether the dying or deceased person is a registered donor, or not. “It’s a simple message, register now, and make sure you talk with your family about it. “It literally takes five minutes to register online, but the impact could last a lifetime.” Ms Thomas said. Call to punish illegal hunters By Esther Lauaki A wildlife rescuer who tried to save a kangaroo that had been shot in the head with a crossbow wants harsh penalties for illegal hunters. Five Freedoms Animal Rescue owner Manfred Zabinska said he was called by a family living near Woodend last year to search for a kangaroo that had been shot by hunters who went onto their property without permission. “We want to see justice and we want a message to be sent to the community that there

is a harsh penalty for people who do this sort of thing,” Mr Zabinska told Star Weekly after the third court appearance of the hunter involved. The male eastern grey kangaroo, which the family had named Spot, survived with the arrow in his head for a month before Mr Zabinska and a team of volunteers tracked him down, tranquilised him and took him to a vet. Spot died three days after undergoing surgery. “It was really distressing for everyone involved,” Mr Zabinska said. “From the rescue, to taking it to the vet, and seeing this kangaroo eventually die, was hard.”

James Jonathan Calleja, 34, faced Bendigo Magistrates’ Court a fortnight ago on three animal cruelty charges, two charges of trespassing and weapons offences. The magistrate ordered a pre-sentencing report and Calleja will be sentenced on September 12. The court heard Calleja and his brother took

an unregistered car to Ashbourne on August 12 last year, and were decked out in camouflage gear and armed with a crossbow. Police raided Calleja’s Sunbury residence on October 2 last year, where a Fang crossbow and 28 crossbow bolts were found. At an earlier hearing in Kyneton Magistrates Court Calleja refused to give a plea. The case was adjourned to Castlemaine where it was subsequently adjourned to Bendigo. “At the very least, we need a message to be sent out that this behaviour is unacceptable,” Mr Zabinska said.

Living the write way Lancefield young people will be among those published as part of a new statewide literacy and leadership initiative. The Where I Live book will include the poems, journal entries, drawings and artworks from Victorian young people aged 10 to 24, including those in the Lancefield chapter of The Field Trip youth leadership program. Their contributions will express their thoughts about their identities, what home means to them, respect, community and the world around them. Project designer Rhiannon Haworth said the book would encompass The Field Trip’s philosophy that everyone is equal regardless of age or status. She said the book would enable participants to improve the world around them, encourage artistic ideas and develop new ways of thinking and doing – and empower them to be social change-makers of the future.

“Is there any achievement better than seeing your feelings, drawings, creations and thoughts in-between the covers of a book?” Ms Haworth asked. “The project shows our participants that anything is achievable when you put your minds to the task and work as a team. “The Field Trip aims to empower young people to find their passion, peers and path, in order to create a positive, sustainable legacy for their local and global community.” Details: www.thefieldtrip.co. Teen scene links in Budding musicians have a chance to take to the stage as part of teen-friendly activities on at Goldfields libraries this semester. Teens are encouraged to check out the free activities at Kyneton and Woodend libraries, which include music workshops, as well as a literary competition and a number of online activities. The library’s regional community partnerships and engagement manager Mark Hands said there’s “some pretty interesting stuff going on for teens” at the library. “Anything from robotics through to fiction writing, as well as the opportunity to compose and record your own music, and have it published by us,” Mr Hands said.

“This exciting opportunity for young adults is called Goldfields Connect – Music in Schools. “It’s providing students with the opportunity to have their music included on our annual digital album. “We even welcome budding musicians to hold live performances at our libraries.” He urged music students to get their schools registered for this year’s album. Track submissions close on Monday, October 31. In November, a panel will shortlist a range of tracks to be included in the 2016 Goldfields Connect album, due out online by December. The council also has an application for a round two grant, and has committed $50,000 in its 2016-17 budget towards the Pipers Creek tower, which would be constructed by Telstra. “We have invested a lot of resources to address this matter over the last three years,” Cr Hackett said.

“We developed a black spot register and partnered with the state and federal governments to refine that study through a second, more detailed analysis.” Property owners willing to host infrastructure on their land would enter agreements with NBN Co, he said. “I would encourage all residents to consider the broader benefits of the new infrastructure, which will support those studying or working from home, help local businesses to thrive, and protect community safety during emergencies,” Cr Hackett said. Musical Bodies will include works by well-loved classical composers Karl Jenkins, Bela Bartok and Johannes Brahms. Resonance String Orchestra director Gavin Green said the September 11 show at Sacred Heart College in Kyneton would be “a dynamic fusion of sound and movement”. “Travel Art brings together dancers from diverse backgrounds, including contemporary dance, classical ballet, improvisation, creative dance, yoga, gymnastics, circus and martial arts,” he said. “Their engaging and thought-provoking performance style will be illuminated against the backdrop of works by classical and

contemporary composers, brought to life by the luscious sounds of the Resonance String Orchestra, the Resonance Senior Strings and Quartet Conspirito.” Mr Green said the Resonance musicians were working towards the Gisborne Singers’ production of Handel’s Messiah in November at the same time as the ensemble prepared for Musical Bodies. Men’s shed needs funds to grow By Esther Lauaki The blokes at Sunbury Men’s Shed are in desperate need of bigger digs. The Evans Street men’s shed is booming, with about 140 members compared to 60 this time last year. Club president Dieter Jankovic said the venue is a tight squeeze for the men, who get together sometimes seven days a week, using their creative skills and experience on projects that benefit others. “The group’s been gradually building up, and it’s showing no sign of slowing down,”

Mr Jankovic said. “If we advertised more than by word of mouth, we’d be inundated, and it would get out of control.” He puts the sudden growth of the club down to Sunbury’s ageing population. “It’s just to do with our generation,” Mr Jankovic said. “It’s also got to do with men just wanting to get out of the house and have some camaraderie. “We’re a fully self-funded shed, which means we direct our own program, and it’s that independence that the men are drawn to.” They would like a $45,000 extension to their clubrooms and have applied for a $30,000 state

government Men’s Shed grant. The committee is trying to raise another $15,000 to put towards the extension. The club’s communication officer Frank Zambello said there were about 2000 men over the age of 60 in retirement in Sunbury. “We think there are many more who’d like

to join us, but we haven’t the space,” he said. “Safety is becoming a bigger issue. “Our occupational health and safety and first aid committees are getting busier, and more diligent. “We are very aware of safety, but the big boost in members and men turning up is making things harder.” Projects undertaken at the shed include making ramps for disability access to Sunbury businesses, and supporting community organisations, such as kindergartens, and Sunbury community radio station 3NRG by building new consoles.

Art tells universal story Stories that united South African tribal women facing the struggles and challenges of HIV and AIDs have inspired students from Sacred Heart College Kyneton and Salesian College in Sunbury. The Canticle of the Universe exhibition is a collection of works by women of the Kopanang community in South Africa, on loan from the Mariposa Museum of Peterborough in America. Kopanang is a Sotho word meaning “gathering together”. The Kopanang community united women through art and by sharing in their journeys. Jan Bower, a teacher at Sacred Heart College, said the women formed the community in order to provide medical, familial, and spiritual support and resources. “The Kopanang Universe Canticle is a collection of 35 stunning wall hangings, which

not only unfolds the universal evolution story, but also reveals and strengthens the spirit of the Kopanang community,” she said. “The intricately embroidered panels tell the story of the universe as interpreted by 17 women. “The woven words of one tapestry aptly states, ‘art becomes integral to life’. “Art is integral to their own story and this exhibit allows us enter their life, understanding and supporting that story,” Ms Bower said. MY PLACE Community and family have kept Max Langshaw firmly grounded, even though much of his life has been spent in the clouds. He talks to Esther Lauaki. What’s your connection with Sunbury? I moved to Sunbury in 1979 from Wagga when the airline I worked for moved its operating base to Melbourne. I chose Sunbury to live as it was close to Melbourne Airport and it had a similar living environment to country New South Wales. I preferred relatively small town communities because of the sense of a wider family, where interest groups tend to support each other and people we meet are considered neighbours. How long were you a pilot? I started regional airline flying in 1974 with routes initially covering New South Wales and Victoria. Prior to that I worked as a flying instructor in Sydney for five years. I retired from flying in 2006. How did you come to be a pilot? In 1965, I returned to Sydney after several years in the UK and Europe, I worked as a planning engineer in the motor industry and learnt to fly on weekends, until I obtained a commercial licence and instructor rating in 1969. I then worked two jobs, motor industry during the week and aviation on weekends, until I secured a full-time flying position. My flying goals were achieved with the help of a Commonwealth scholarship. You’ve been to the Commonwealth Games … what was that like? In 1957, I started cycle racing. After turning senior, I represented NSW at various Australian championships, culminating in

being selected to compete at the 1962 British and Commonwealth Games in Perth. There I was fortunate in winning the gold medal for the 4000-metre pursuit event. Representing your country in any endeavour is exciting for a young person, and a great lesson in life to be rewarded for the countless hours of training and sacrifice. Do you still compete? I have continued to ride for fitness, although I have had a break over the last few months, but looking forward to the warmer weather when I can resume daily rides of about 50 kilometres. For a time I raced with the Northern Vets, however administrative workloads in my job as chief pilot prevented me from training to an acceptable standard. What do you do in your spare time? Transition to retirement has not been a problem. For 30 years I have had involvement with St Mary’s Anglican Church, serving on parish council, so spare time is taken up working for the community store, helping out with grounds and building maintenance, and assisting with funerals and weddings. I have a great wife, two daughters and three grand-daughters, so six women make sure I’m fully occupied whenever I look like relaxing! I’m also looking forward to resuming cycling with some very good friends. What’s the best thing about life in Sunbury? My favourite thing about Sunbury is that it has many groups dedicated to the wellbeing of the community, whether it be organisations, such

as Careworks or the service clubs, or sporting groups and churches, which quietly support people in need. What would you change if you could? What I would change in Sunbury is the random development that exists today. Before any more housing development with subsequent

population growth takes place, serious consideration should be given to the inadequate infrastructure that exists today. Sunbury needs to improve road access in and out of the town, CBD parking is inadequate, the level crossing is a major bugbear and another railway crossing is needed. Compared to Melton our town planning is second rate.

The mother load M

adeleine West has given us some time today, which is no small thing, given she is an actor (famously playing Danielle McGuire in Underbelly Underbelly), writer and … did I mention she has six children under the age of eight? Did that sentence make you feel tired? Or just awed? Who has six children these days? The answer is someone who had four children and then in 2014 found herself pregnant with twins. “They were a lovely little surprise,” Madeleine says, smiling. Did it ever cross her mind to have six? “I didn’t really ever consider having children. They weren’t necessarily on the horizon. And they kept coming.” How did she feel on hearing news of twins? “My jaw dropped and fell on the floor. I immediately thought, ‘How am I going to fit more seats in the car?’” Madeleine, 38, has now written a book, Six Under Eight, a funny, thoughtful and wise journal that takes us into the joyful and sometimes chaotic world she shares with her husband, chef Shannon Bennett, and their tribe who now range in age from 10 years old to 15 months. She writes about “the stares in the supermarket car park as I unload one after another, like clowns unfolding from a Mini Minor” and “roasting two whole chickens for dinner, potentially three”. “I like jotting down my thoughts,” she says of the book’s genesis. “I found when I was pregnant with my twins, I couldn’t sleep and I would spend my nights roaming the

house.” She started writing anecdotes about motherhood, not realising there was a book in it. “[It was] for myself, to be able to look back: ‘Remember when that happened?’” The book is a mix of stories from home and notes on parenting. “I’m certainly not an expert, but I’ve had six kids so I’ve had a fair bit of experience at what kids go through at different stages.” How does she manage it all? “It’s human nature. Once that little person comes into your world, you’ll find you’re able to juggle all sorts of things. “I’m surprised I manage to fit in everything I want to do in that one day – if I stay focused. That means sometimes I’ll get to the end of that day and say, ‘I haven’t sat down and I’ve eaten nothing but a bag of Jatz all day’.” Lists help her through, she says. “Every morning I set the alarm 15 minutes early so I have 15 minutes of quiet time to focus and write my list of goals for the day. It can be something as simple as labelling a kid’s uniform with something that won’t wash off. “I keep several lists running around the house, whether it’s what I need to get from the supermarket, what I need to do in the day, what my long-term goals are, what holidays we’d like to take one day. And they are dotted all around the house. Walls, desks – a montage of lists.” Madeleine grew up in Woodend, north of Melbourne. She was an exceptional student with a hunger to act. “I always wanted to be an actor. Acting, art or writing.”

Finishing school with excellent marks, she “didn’t want to waste them” so she studied law. “As much as I knew acting was always going to be my end goal, I thought I’d really like to do something that will give me the opportunity to earn money while I’m chasing this illusory entertainment career.” In her third year at university she scored a role on Neighbours playing Dee Bliss. She deferred the law degree. After three years she left the series in dramatic fashion: “Dee got married, fell off a cliff, got washed out to sea and was never seen again,” Madeleine says. She had felt in a rut on Neighbours so she went to Los Angeles and did some stand-up comedy. “I thought, ‘I really need to scare myself again’. And the scariest thing I could think of was going up on stage as myself and laying myself bare and saying, ‘Here I am, tearing myself open, please laugh’.” In 2000 she met Shannon Bennett at a function for Jamie Oliver, who was visiting Australia. She was a vegetarian until Shannon “encouraged her back into the world of meat”. They shared a cab home from the event. In 2002, while standing on the pavement on Sydney’s Oxford Street on a rainy evening, Madeleine was hit by a bus. She suffered a brain haemorrhage and a fractured skull. “I was thrown quite a distance, landed on my face and skidded along the ground,” she says. “Apart from breaking a bunch of teeth and blowing out all the blood vessels in my eyes, I had a massive scab and big scar. When the doctors let me see myself in the mirror for the first time, my immediate thought was, ‘My acting career is over’. “It was two sex workers who found me and helped … and then they disappeared into the night..” In 2008 Madeleine shone in a breakthrough role as underworld figure Tony Mokbel’s girlfriend Danielle McGuire in Underbelly Underbelly. “I

got what I like to think were my first acting plaudits,” she says. “People were able to appreciate that I was capable of more than playing the blonde nymphet with a big smile who’s wearing a bikini for no particular reason.”

‘‘

I didn’t consider having children. They weren’t on the horizon. And they kept coming

’’

- Madeleine West She has since taken on other gritty roles, playing a sex worker in Foxtel’s ’s Satisfaction and an ice addict in Seven’s City Homicide. Later this year she will star in Channel Ten’s much anticipated new drama The Wrong Girl, alongside Jessica Marais, Craig McLachlan and Hamish Blake.

M

adeleine’s book is full of the joy and laughter of family – “My daughter was drinking from the dog’s bowl with a curly straw … is that a problem?” – but there are also shocking and frightening moments. Their seven-year-old daughter slipped over the second-storey balustrade of their home and fell

eight metres on to the hardwood floor. She was “sprawled on the floor gasping and contorting”. “When you enter parenthood, you can be surprised at what you are capable of,” Madeleine says. “I appreciate those stories of women who lift entire cars for their toddler. You suddenly find reservoirs of strength and focus you didn’t realise you had. You comprehend how fragile life is. We take our life for granted. “That first night in hospital all I could think about was my daughter, the second night I was thinking about every child on the ward, third night I was thinking about all the kids in the world and what they go through. It opens your perspective.” It’s a challenge to juggle parenthood and her acting career. “My perspective on my purpose in being an actor has changed. I love it and it’s my passion. I like to think that I’ve become a storyteller. I love telling stories to my children. And I like to think I’m putting work out there that they will be proud of one day.” She says parenting has not only made her a better person, but also a better performer “because I finally comprehend empathy … There’s no time for navel-gazing. You get a world perspective”. “Parenting is a responsibility, not just to get through the mundane chores of the day but to teach the leaders of tomorrow. If we can teach them generosity and patience and

NEWS

kindness more than anything, then we’re well on the way.” She also cautions parents to look after themselves. “The greatest thing as a parent you can do for yourself is to be kind to yourself and not expect that you’re always going to get it right. There is no one formula for parenting. … Listen to your heart and listen to your children and you’re going to go a long way.” I ask how she and Shannon manage when he is busy running his restaurants, (the three-hatted Vue de Monde, Bistro Vue and Cafe Vue in the city, Heide and Melbourne Airport, Jardin Tan at the Botanic Gardens, and the Burnham Beeches property in the Dandenongs) as well as writing cookbooks and television appearances. “We’ve slipped into a comfortable routine,” says Madeleine. “Shannon is essentially supporting the lifestyle that we live with his work. He has an enormous amount of stress on his shoulders so wherever I can support him I do, and if that means that I’m the one who’s making the beds and the school lunches, that’s fine. He then supports me when I have opportunities to go back into work. Reflecting on the dynamic of a large family, she says: “I hope that one advantage of being one of so many is that the children never grow up with a sense of entitlement because they are always going to have to share and think about the other person. And I like to think that sets them up well for life.”

It’s Warm in Winter in the Fireside Room. Open 7-days a week in Gisborne South

Cool climate vision offers the peak of hospitality In 1978, Bob Nixon had a vision. He recognised that the cool climate of the Macedon Ranges had the ideal attributes for exceptional wines and had an idea to plant grapes. He was right.

Free Wine Tasting daily Now serving wood fired pizzas and more everyday.

Nearly 40 years later, Gisborne Peak Winery is home to a perfectly primed and pruned vineyard, producing some of the region’s highest quality drops. Thirty years ago, Bob was joined on his venture by his wife Barbara, a Wisconsin native who found the pull of Macedon Ranges (and Bob) too much to ignore. “Together we made a dream team,” says Barbara, “with Bob looking after the vines and me looking after guests. “Our investment in the entire winery experience now has Gisborne Peak at the top of many must-visit lists.” Just 45 minutes from Melbourne’s CBD, Gisborne Peak is at the southern end of the Macedon wine region, and its cellar door is open every day. “Here you can taste the delicious wines on offer, while enjoying a wood-fired pizza or shared tasting platter of smoked meat, cheese and dips and admiring the stunning vineyard views,” says Barbara.

“Red drinkers will likely enjoy the shiraz, made using grapes from the nearby Pyrenees and Grampians region. The estate-grown pinot noir has flavours of cherries and strawberries, but with the perfect level of balance and refinement,” Barbara says. “For white lovers, the round, fresh palate and gentle balance of acid in the 2015 chardonnay is a perfect match with creamy sauces or cheese platters. Pair it with the cellar door’s baked brie to see how the complementary flavours work together.” The winery also has eco cottages, powered by the wind and sun, in which to stay – where luxury, relaxation and sustainability come together. With views over the vines and nearby lake, each cottage is self-contained with a private balcony and all the mod-cons for an excellent escape. And have a chat to one of the friendly staff at the cellar door about the Adopt a Vine program. This innovative approach allows you to become a vigneron without a million dollar investment. Chockful of warm sophistication, this Canadian cedar abode on about 3.94 hectares commands spectacular views and delivers privacy in spades. The house is an ode to timber and slate, executed stylishly. Four bedrooms and a bathroom share the top floor, where a balcony presides over those views. The large main bedroom has walk-through wardrobes and an en suite with walk-in shower. The ground floor, except for a powder room and adjoining laundry, comprises three living zones. One is a fab lounge room with a brick fireplace; another is a family-meals area with floorboards; the third is a fantastic sunroom with picture windows. Lovely gardens include bluestone terracing, shady exotics to sit under and a fully netted vegie garden. A double garage, workshop, water tanks, three bores and a cellar built into the hillside are other drawcards.

On about 4704 square metres with three street frontages, lovely mature gardens and rear bushland, this is a place with its own elegant character. Each of the four bedrooms has a wardrobe and its own décor. They share a modern bathroom with an enclosed toilet flanked by a vanity unit with raised-bowl basin and a shower and clawfoot tub. The living area is divided into three zones – lounge room (with fireplace), family and meals (with wood heater). A separate dining room with floorboards could serve as a study. The galley-style kitchen has abundant storage and bench space, under-bench oven, electric cooktop and dishwasher. The separate laundry has a doggie door. A paved patio has a leafy outlook and garden paths invite exploration. LPG ducted heating, split-system, water tank and town water, a circular driveway and double garage are other noteworthy features.

Right in the centre of town, with shops, services, cafes and train station all within a short walk, this rear unit – one of three on the block – is likely to win admirers among investors, downsizers and first-home buyers. It has two large, carpeted bedrooms – one with a vertical blind-dressed bay window, and each with built-in wardrobes. They share a neat bathroom with neutral colour palette. Toilet and laundry are separate. The carpeted living room, with bay window, wall gas heater and air-conditioner, abuts the kitchen, which has a gas cooktop, breakfast bench and a stack of timber cupboards topped with mottled-grey laminate. A concrete-paved courtyard stretches across the back and joins (via a gate in white picket fence) a side lawn and front garden area. There’s a remote-controlled garage and extra parking space on the block of about 300 square metres.

With long-term tenants paying $330 a week, this neat brick veneer provides a chance to start or add to a property investment portfolio or for a first-home buyer to claim it as their own. It’s around the corner one way from Main Street shops and services, and around a corner the opposite way from the primary school and Romsey Recreation Reserve. The three bedrooms share an updated bathroom. The lounge room, which links with the kitchen, has a wood heater and split-system to tame Romsey’s temperature extremes. The updated kitchen, open to the meals zone, has a breakfast bench, a gas upright cooker and a stainless-steel dishwasher. There’s an undercover outdoor area, the good-sized backyard has new fencing and a concrete driveway heads to a carport.

Price: $749,000

Since 1867, four generations of the same family have owned this parcel of about 8.09 hectares, with its residence built about 60 years ago and extended and renovated eight years ago. The unimpeded views circling the property are spectacular, with sunsets over Camel’s Hump seen from the front and Mt William and the Cobaws from the back. Perfect for cropping, grazing or running a pony or two, the place has much potential, with a relaxed rural lifestyle to the fore. The house has a country charm all its own, with elements such as a kitchen bench constructed from timber trusses

reclaimed from Romsey Primary School, corrugated iron featuring on splashbacks, and a warm ambience inviting down-home relaxation. Entry is into a hallway lined with dark laminated boards that flow into a lounge-dining room with wood heater then around to a family room next to the kitchen. Original cupboard doors, along with the aforementioned benches and splashbacks, make the kitchen one for whipping up scones in the Eurolec stainless-steel cooker, while a walk-in pantry and dishwasher add the practical bits. The laundry, with two closets and timber bench,

maintains the country feel. The first of three carpeted bedrooms is off the entry hall, next to a powder room with pedestal basin. Two more are in their own “wing”, along with the main bathroom which has an oval spa and a period vanity unit. The main bedroom has a split-system (one of four throughout), walk-through wardrobe and an en suite with period vanity unit and enclosed toilet. A small study has a door to side verandah. The family room has doors to a gabled pergola above brick paving and a timber deck open to the sunshine. Both look out to a lawn area where a timber cubby house,

Another 15 x 7.5-metre shed/workshop has an attached 5 x 4.5-metre shed with concrete floor, power and truck-height door. There’s a double carport behind roller doors. Town water, large tanks, a 5kW solar system and school bus shelter within 100 metres are other drawcards. Carole Levy

31 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 9, 2016

SPORT Tigers high five, for now By Tara Murray Gisborne saved some of its best football for its Macedon Ranges’ rival Kyneton, but it wasn’t enough for the Bulldogs to take the points on Saturday in the Bendigo Football League. The Bulldogs were always in for a tough challenge against a side looking to play finals, and they gave the Tigers a hard contest. The second quarter, when the Tigers kicked nine goals to three, proved to be a decider between the teams, with the Tigers winning 20.12 (132)-12.11 (83). Bulldogs’ coach Brad Spear said they had focused on having a good start, as they seemed to struggle early in games. “We got the first goal, which is what we were after,” he said. “The second quarter was really disappointing … we allowed them to kick nine goals in the second quarter. The second half was much more competitive and it was a pleasing finish. “I managed to pull a lot of positives from the game.” Spear said the biggest positive was that they didn’t throw in the towel and, at times, took the ball from defence to the forward line. William Bell debuted for the Tigers. For the Bulldogs, Thomas Wood was the main goalkicker, kicking three goals. Wood, Ollie Messaoudi and Nicholas Doolan were best for the Bulldogs. Mitch Scholard was the dominant forward, kicking six goals for the Tigers. Ben Weightman, returning after two weeks out with a hamstring injury, kicked three goals. Rhys Magin was best on ground. Jarrod Witnish, Scholard and Daniel Davie were other standouts for the Tigers. The Bulldogs, which have only won two matches this season, have two winnable competitions in the next two weeks, against South Bendigo and Maryborough, which they defeated the first time round. “The opportunity to finish the season well is important for the group going forward,” Spear said. “We were realistic from the start of the season that we were planning to give lots of opportunities to local kids, and we’ve done that. The season isn’t necessarily judged on wins and losses. “We will go into these last two games with confidence.” For the Tigers, the win jumps them above Kangaroo Flat, which lost to Golden Square. Only percentage separates fourth to sixth, with the Tigers sitting in the middle with three rounds remaining. The task for the Tigers to stay in the top five is a difficult one though – they face top three sides, Strathfieldsaye, Golden Square and Sandhurst in the last three rounds.

Tigers hang on to take one-point thriller Lancefield kept its finals hopes alive with a hard-fought win over Wallan in the Riddell District Football League on Saturday. After getting out to a 32-point lead in the third quarter, the Tigers watched that evaporate as Wallan’s Ben Schraven kicked four goals in eight minutes. The Magpies hit the front late in the quarter and led by one point at the last break. But in a tight and dramatic final quarter, a late Tigers point gave them a 12.8 (80)-12.7 (79) win. Tigers’ coach Ashley Manning said the last quarter was just an arm wrestle. “It was a battle of the defences,” Manning said. “We kicked a goal to go up and then their coach kicked a sensational goal from the boundary to level the scores. “There was about eight minutes left and we

spent about six minutes of that in our forward line. We were trying to get a score. “We scrambled through a point at the 21 and a half minute mark and it was then about hanging on and our backline stood strong.” Myles Dorman kicked five goals for Lancefield and Jon Kent chipped in with three. Phillip Conway was named the Tigers’ best, along with Adam Sayers and Drew Hynninen. The win, the Tigers’ first against a side above them on the ladder, couldn’t have come at a better time. They are now just a game behind the sixth-placed Magpies. The Sunbury Kangaroos split the two teams on the ladder, equal on points with the Tigers. Manning said they just had to focus on winning their last two games, against Woodend-Hesket and Romsey, and not on what the other teams were doing. He said finals

would be a feather in the cap for the club, which hasn’t been in the mix the past few years. “We’ve improved this year,” Manning said. “We had two 100-point losses last year and this year there’s been nothing over 50 points. “Unless there was an upset it was always likely going to come down to this game [against Wallan] for us to stay in the mix. “We still have two tough games to go. Woodend-Hesket will be hard to beat and it was a close game against Romsey last time.” In other matches, Broadford beat Rupertswood by three points, Diggers Rest was too good for Woodend-Hesket, Riddell smashed Rockbank, Romsey recorded a 116-point win over Melton Centrals and Macedon beat Sunbury Kangaroos. Gisborne’s Sam Ramsay is usually a midfielder, but he was thrown a different challenge while part of the School Sport Victorian 15 years and under football team. Ramsay had to learn fast how to adjust to life on the half-back line and the coaches’ faith was rewarded. Not only did Ramsay help his side win the national title, he was also named in the all-Australian team of the best players at the championships, which were held in Maroochydore. He was named among his side’s best players in three of its five matches. Ramsay said his selection in the all-Australian team had yet to sink in. “I thought I went all right and thought I had played some consistent football,” he said. “I didn’t mind playing at half-back. The biggest thing is, you always need to know where your direct opponent is.” The Maribyrnong College student was selected for the Victorian team after successfully trialling against other players who had put their hand up. “You had to register and they had a trial and I made the cut,” he said. “There ended up only being two trials and there was a couple of games, too. After the last trial, I thought I could make the team.” He was one of six players from his school to make the Victorian team, with Braemar College’s Sebastian Bell-Bartels also selected. Victoria won all its games, including the final, against South Australia, 9.7 (61)-7.4 (46). Ramsay said the best thing about the championships was the friendships he formed with other players. Unfortunately, Ramsay won’t get the chance to head to South Africa with his fellow all-Australians. Every second year, the all-Australian team travels to South Africa – and this just happens to be a non-travel year. The Melbourne supporter said he hoped to take his football as far as he could. He currently plays with the Gisborne Rookies and was part of the Calder Cannons under-15 squad. Tara Murray

Stray elbow delivers final blow to Jets’ finals dream Sunbury Jets suffered a heartbreaking end to their Big V men’s division 1 season, losing a thrilling elimination final. Playing finals for the first time since 2009, the Jets travelled to Shepparton to take on the experienced Gators’ line-up. Trailing by 10 points at three-quarter time, the Jets didn’t give up and took the lead late in the quarter. But fortunes swung against the Jets in the final minute, a Gators’ basket with 22 seconds to go proving the match winner, 84-82. Jets coach Andrew Summerville said, in time, his team would look back at the season and the achievement of making finals, but at

the moment the loss was a bitter pill to swallow. “Sometimes its easier to lose by 15-20 points than swallowing a loss like that,” he said. “The guys are gutted to have come down to one basket, and in the end one error ends the season. “To keep so close to a win in a game on the road against an extremely experienced side is a good achievement.” The Jets got off to a rough start with Josh Grabham and Kade Marra not making the trip. It meant that veteran Nathan Sellwood, the only Jets’ member to have played in a senior Big V final, moved into the starting line-up. “He was great for us,” Summerville said. “It’s at

this time of year guys like him step up. He got elbowed in the last 30 seconds and had to come off with the blood rule. “It was the worst time for him to come off. Nathan being out there could have steadied the ship.” Despite the result, Summerville said it was pleasing to see the side fight back in the last quarter when, a week earlier against Warrnambool, they had been blown out of the game. Nathan Baker top-scored with 23 points, while Ish Sanders (21) and Mitchell Newton (18) were also dangerous on the scoreboard. Summerville said this season would set the

Inspired by Mick’s tick By Tara Murray “Jason has the hallmarks of a senior [AFL] player.” Praise such as this, from AFL coaching games record-holder Mick Malthouse, doesn’t come much higher. Malthouse, now on the television show The Recruit, which gives footballers the chance to win an AFL rookie contract, was impressed with what he saw in Sunbury’s Jason Williams during filming. But The Recruit experience ended up being bittersweet for Williams. After winning high praise from Malthouse and former AFL player Ben Dixon, Williams ruptured a ligament in his thumb in the second episode – an injury that had him delisted from the show. “[Being on the show] was one of the best experiences I’ve had,” Williams told Star Weekly. “It opened my eyes to what it takes to get to the elite level, which is my dream and goal in the short term. “The most disappointing thing was knowing I’d done everything to put my best foot forward and was going out of the show for reasons I couldn’t control.” Williams, 22, said that in the past he would have allowed a setback like this to derail him. As a promising young player with the Calder Cannons, Williams was talked about as a possible draft prospect. But, by his own admission, he took it all for granted. After moving to VFL club Port Melbourne and playing in a grand final, Williams says his life started to fall apart and he lost his love for football. He suffered depression and gave the game away. But, since joining Riddell District Football League side Diggers Rest in 2014 he’s rediscovered his passion and says he’s determined the latest setback won’t stop him. “Hearing that sort of feedback [from Malthouse] only added to my determination,” Williams said. “He’s arguably the greatest coach in AFL history and if someone like him has seen these things, I’m not far off where I want to be. “In the past I would have got really worried and got down. It’s about getting out there and enjoying my football.” Williams said Malthouse had been a good mentor on and off the field. He’s still in contact with him and Dixon. It has been an up and down year for Williams on field with Port Melbourne and, lately, Diggers Rest. “I couldn’t do anything and wasted the pre-season because of my injury,” he said. “I’m not satisfied with this year. It’s just been a test for me … When I’m at my best I can play senior VFL footy.” Diggers Rest’s reserves and seniors sides are in the finals mix and Williams is keen to play a part in trying to help Diggers Rest win a premiership. The Burras, who have lost the past three grand finals, are unbeaten this season. “It’s my home club and I love them and it would mean the absolute world to them to win the premiership,” he said.

measure of where they had to be in future. “It’s hard to compare last year to this year, with a different playing group,” he said. “It’s a measuring stick from this year and if the bulk of the group stays, I think we can contest a championship in the next couple of years.” The Jets’ youth league women’s team’s season is also over after a loss to Keilor in a low-scoring division 2 clash. The Thunder won 47-40. Sophie O’Brien, with 13 points, was the only Jets player in double figures. Tara Murray

Big win sets up Lions’ push for top finish With their finals spot sealed, the Sunbury Lions are looking to tie up a top-three finish in the Ballarat Football League. Coming off the bye, the Lions only needed one week to ensure they would maintain their record of playing finals every year they’ve been in the BFL. For the first three quarters, the Lions could do what they wanted against winless Melton South, with the margin blowing out to triple figures by three-quarter time. At one stage, the Lions kicked 16 goals in a row. As in the previous game between the two teams, the Panthers were able to add some respectability to the scoreboard in the last quarter, but the Lions still recorded a massive 27.27 (189)-13.4 (82) win. Lions coach Rick Horwood said that while the margin could have been bigger, he would take a 107-point win any day. The win helped boost the Lions’ percentage, which could be crucial in the run home. “It got us back from fifth back to third on the ladder,” he said. “We led by 130 points at one stage and could have won by 150, but credit to them as they kicked 8.1 in the last quarter.” Alik Magin put in another best-on-ground performance, but Horwood said there wasn’t a bad performer for his team. Chris Tsardakis was important, playing his best game for the club. Josh Burgess kicked five goals as 12 players got on the scoreboard. Eight players kicked multiple goals. The win was soured by an hand injury to Grant Valles. Valles, who had kicked three goals, dislocated two of his knuckles and had surgery on Saturday night. David Kovacevic was limited after tweaking an achilles, but Horwood said that was about being cautious more than anything. With Kovacevic spending time up forward and on the bench, Adam Short spent time in the ruck, giving the Lions a third rucking option. The Lions face North Ballarat City this weekend. A win will all but seal a top three spot going into the final round. The Lions’ A-grade netballers are also on track for a top three finish after beating Melton South 72-17. Alex Maher scored 47 goals, while defender Rachel Dovaston was best on court. The season is over for the Lions’ football women after they lost their Victorian Women’s Football League division 2 semi-final to Seaford.
