Wonder not, Alice is back
(Joe Mastroianni)
Gisborne teen Megan Vaughan is the face of a new version of Alice in Wonderland. Megan will portray two new characters – the Magic Door and Alice’s sister – in an upcoming show created for the Victorian Youth Theatre by Melbourne writer and storyteller Dan Nixon and director Tony Nikolakopoulos. The 15-year-old from Braemar College has been acting for six years and has lessons at Victorian Youth Theatre at least twice a week. “I’ve always loved acting and being able express myself on stage,” Megan says.“I love to be able to become someone else and be accepted as that character.” The show comes to the Gisborne library on September 28, and still includes Alice, the Mad Hatter, the Queen of Hearts and other madcap Wonderland characters. The free show will tour Victoria during September school holidays, and includes a cast of talented young performers putting a new spin on a beloved tale. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland runs from 10.30am to 11.30am at Gisborne library on September 28. Bookings essential at 5428 3962 or www.aliceinwonderland.net.au Esther Lauaki
Green waste plan dumped By Esther Lauaki A new green waste voucher scheme for Macedon Ranges’ residents has been put on hold until next year after a public backlash. Council changed its service last month just as spring clean-ups got under way for the upcoming fire season. Two vouchers were sent out to householders with August rates notices, entitling ratepayers to get rid of two small trailer-loads of green waste free at transfer stations each year, starting September 1. The new system replaces a free year-round green waste disposal service. The change has been met with a barrage of criticism from residents claiming there was a
lack of consultation over the introduction of an inferior service. Councillors have decided to postpone the start date of the new scheme until January 1 next year “to assist ratepayers and residents with their spring property clean-ups”. Councillor Russell Mowatt, who last week put forward a notice of motion to hold off the new green waste system, chalked up the reversal as a “win for the community”. “I believe it is important to monitor the introduction of the fees for green waste, and capture feedback from the residents’ complaints or approval, to ensure we are engaging and listening to the community,” he said. “As a council we must be seen as
using the continuous improvement process to consistently strive to improve our service according to the highest standards.” But council’s assets and operations director Dale Thornton said the new system would still benefit residents. “The people we’ve had the most opposition from are commercial operators and users from outside the shire but, for our residential ratepayers, we still believe it’s a fair system,” Mr Thornton said. Clarkfield resident Andrew Fletcher was one of a number of residents who called on the council to re-visit its new scheme. “This year alone, I have made five trips to the Romsey transfer station … and this is not an
unusual year,” Mr Fletcher wrote in a letter to the editor. “After the vouchers for the year have been used, and rather than pay a fee, irresponsible people will resort to roadside dumping, which is already a blight on the shire, undoubtedly increasing the fuel load for the bushfire season.” Mr Fletcher said he lives on about 11 hectares, with many mature eucalypts that shed leaves and branches during hot months and when there are high winds, meaning he requires a continual clean-up regime. Residents will need to show photographic proof of residence to use the council’s green waste service from next year. For details: mrsc.vic.gov.au/waste

Airfield plan goes back to people Kyneton residents have another chance to either back the town’s airfield expansion or tell the council what’s wrong with its masterplan. A proliferation of privately owned hangars has been a point of contention in recent years, with a public backlash over the council’s expansion plans and the noise associated with the airfield’s growth and plans for a night landing strip. The airport is on the Kyneton Metcalfe Road, which runs parallel to the Calder Freeway on
the town’s northern fringe. Council agreed at its August meeting to put the Kyneton airfield masterplan out for public comment for a second time. Planning director Sophie Segafredo said the council had agreed to use the draft masterplan as a guide to the site’s expansion. She said the development of an operating plan and equipment to forecast noise emissions are still needed before the masterplan could be adopted. “I want to assure the community that the process has reached a point – but it’s not a final
point,” Ms Segafredo said. “As we discussed … we’ve been giving serious consideration to how the airfield might take up the opportunities to expand. “That will be dependant on understanding the operations and the noise impacts that it’s likely to have on the town, and the other residential farming buildings in the surrounding area.” Ms Segafredo said a number of changes had been made to the masterplan as it was exhibited, and it was important that residents consider these changes before forming opinions.
She said the council has clarified that the CFA do not intend to use the airfield for fixed wing aircraft. “It was important to recognise that, and there are some changes in the masterplan that identify that … we will be exploring that to a great degree with the CFA projects that occur from here.” Daylesford and Macedon Ranges Tourism Association chair Noel Harvey said the airfield was a “valuable community asset”. “It’s the only airfield in our region,” Mr Harvey, who lives nearby, said.
Old Yeller doesn’t fit ‘the look’
Rock mob ready to roll
A Romsey family is thinking of selling up after 16 years because of a row with the council over a truck parked on their block. The Vernon family owns a trucking company that operates out of Melbourne, but a decommissioned prime mover, affectionately known as ‘Old Yeller’, has been stored on their 4000 square metre Metcalfe Street property for several years now. Owner Anne Vernon said when she and her husband Peter bought the land, it was in a rural zone. It was only rezoned to residential in the last 10 years, which restricts the parking of large vehicles without a permit. “The truck has always been parked outside our house,” Ms Vernon said. “It’s unregistered and it’s never used.” It wasn’t until April this year, after complaints from a neighbour, that council told the Vernons to apply for a permit to store the vehicle, or remove it from the property. “The truck has sentimental value to my husband,” Ms Vernon said. The family’s application for a permit was denied, and a subsequent appeal was knocked back in July on the grounds that the truck was deemed to have a “detrimental impact on the neighbourhood”. Ms Vernon said the last straw was when council fined them $500 earlier this month. “The truck has served him well,” she said. “He [Peter] doesn’t want to have to let it go, and my son has plans to fix it up and use it as a show truck. We don’t know what else to do. There are many trucks or containers in the vicinity of our property, and I doubt that they are all permitted.” Community safety manager Anne-Louise Lindner said the law on trucks exists to protect ‘residential amenity’. “There are a number of noise and amenity issues with the vehicle at the property,” she said. “Vehicles of this nature are generally stored and kept in commercial and industrial zoned areas. “Council has suggested … these options be explored.”

People with business and sports management skills, historians, teachers and archeologists, are needed to ensure a broad range of talent is behind the delivery of the new Hanging Rock masterplan. Macedon Ranges council and the state government have joined forces on a new masterplan for the iconic rock and its surrounds, which include a nature reserve, an outdoor music and festival venue and a horse racing track. Council’s chief executive Peter Johnston said a new advisory committee was being set up to advise the council’s own committee of management. “We are looking for people with experience in the areas of community leadership and participation, economic development, business leadership and innovation, tourism and events, environment, biodiversity or conservation,” Mr Johnston said. “Those who have a background or knowledge in financial management, history, archaeology, heritage, education, and management or organisation of sport and recreation activities are also encouraged to apply.” The new advisory committee will help finalise the draft masterplan, and kickstart any recommended actions. Meanwhile, council and the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning are spending a $1 million state government grant on improving toilets at the Hanging Rock visitor centre, upgrading the entrance road and replanting. Applications for the committee close at 5pm September 20. Details: www.mrsc.vic.gov.au/yoursay

Vintage all the buzz All things old can become new again for art lovers and collectors at the Kyneton Antique and Vintage Fair this week. The event is one of the many highlights of the town’s Daffodil and Arts Festival, which runs from September 1 to 11 this year. Fair co-ordinator Hanne Juul says the antique fair, which celebrates two decades this year, has had a name change in the past two years to appeal to lovers of vintage as well as antique collectors. “What started out as the Kyneton Antique Fair but changed its name to the Kyneton Antique and Vintage Fair,” she says.
“Vintage has become quite a buzz word especially for the younger collector and fashionistas.” The fair will take over the historic Kyneton town hall in Mollison Street this weekend. “We’ll have a great a mix … anything from a thimble to a grandfather clock and everything in between,” Ms Juul says. Doors open Friday, September 2, 5-8pm, Saturday 10am-5pm and Father’s Day Sunday, September 4, 10am-4pm. Entry $7. Details: www.visitmacedonranges.com Esther Lauaki

Plants for habitat
Gisborne Montessori School has developed an innovative indigenous plant garden to provide habitat for local woodland birds. Macedon Ranges council provided 200 indigenous plants and tree guards for the school ahead of its tree planting day last Friday, along with a plan of the site and advice on planting. Mayor Graham Hackett said it was heart-warming to see the next generation explore issues around sustainability and learn more about the importance of natural habitat early on. Council puts lifestyle over policy By Esther Lauaki
Bush backyard opens again Residents are invited to explore one of the Macedon Ranges’ ultimate blokey backyards this weekend. The gates on Terry Moore’s Teldorado garden will open to the public from September 2-13 as part of Kyneton Daffodil Festival’s open garden program. Mr Moore first opened his Drummond North property in 2013 and has raised $7500 towards improving mental health outcomes in Macedon Ranges and Hepburn shires over subsequent years. He wants to raise another $2500 from this year’s open garden – his last effort – for the Macedon Ranges Suicide Prevention Action Group. “This year, there’s a new bar, a safer place for my dog, Digher, a couple of new water tanks and loads of other stuff,” Mr Moore says. “Seven days a week, Teldorado is primarily my place, but I knows it’s a pretty good bloke’s backyard, and things just look better than last year.” The cool room is covered in beer coasters and the outdoor pizza oven will be cooking healthy pizzas during the open garden. Teldorado is at 311 Taradale Road, Drummond North. Entry is by gold coin donation. Details: 0439 559 587 or tmoore@ mrsc.vic.gov.au

The continued fragmentation of farm land for country lifestyle blocks has led to calls for Macedon Ranges council to be consistent in its planning. Cr John Connor told last week’s meeting that an influx of planning applications from people wanting to build on smaller blocks, some as small as 3.4 hectares, clearly showed the council’s rural living strategy needs reviewing. Cr Connor went in to bat for three applicants – and appealed for fellow councillors to grant them permits – after council officers had recommended knocking them back. “I just think that we really need to think about the situation that these applicants are in,” Cr Connor said. The three had requested permits to build in farm zones near Kyneton and Malmsbury. West ward councillor Jennifer Anderson was a sole voice of protest and sounded the alarm about council’s contradictory approach in farming zones. She said many people had been sold farm land expecting to be able to build, only to be told that farm zones require a minimum 40-hectare block to justify a dwelling. While she felt for the applicants she said: “It is not good governance to go against your strategy.” “I agree that we need to show compassion with applications and it is very sad that [one applicant] had been sold land with a misunderstanding of the zoning rules,” Cr Anderson said. “But we have to look at every decision on a strategic basis, not on an individual basis.” Councillors overturned the officers’ recommendations, and instead voted to grant the three permits.

Rod Oosterhof shows off his greenkeeping award. (Damjan Janevski)
Greens guru gets gong Rod Oosterhof is at the top of his game after a decade of caring for bowling greens. The Sunbury Bowls Club greenkeeper was last week named Victoria’s Greenkeeper of the Year for his impeccable work. Clubs nominate members of the Victorian Greenkeepers Association for the award. Nominees are then assessed on criteria such as their greens work, bookkeeping, ability to adapt to changing conditions and contributions to the association. “This is terrific,” Mr Oosterhof said. “It’s lovely to get some recognition for your work.” He started greenkeeping at the Sunbury Bowls Club 10 years ago. The full-time club employee is dedicated to keeping the club’s
three greens in top shape week after week. “I enjoy my work,” he said. “The aim is to keep the greens running as quickly as possible all the time. “Bowlers like their greens running quickly so that’s what I try to do to the best of my ability through regular mowing and rolling and making it perfect.” Greenkeepers association vice-president Adam Shawcross said Mr Oosterhof’s work was impressive. “He stood out in pretty much all the categories but his greens were second to none,” Mr Shawcross said. Selling secondhand cars from naturestrips may save owners advertising money, but Macedon Ranges council warns it could also cost them. Roadsides, naturestrips and footpaths are all ‘public land’ and the council has started enforcing its local law number 10, which makes parking on public land an offence that incurs on-the-spot fines, even for people trying to sell cars privately outside their own homes. Three people have been prosecuted in recent weeks at Kyneton Magistrates Court for refusing to pay fines that were originally issued for vehicles for sale parked on public land. All three car owners were fined $200 and ordered to pay council’s court costs. The magistrate stated the matters were strict liability offences and motorists should be aware of council’s bylaws, which are similar to those in other municipalities. Council’s community safety manager Anne-Louise Lindner said parking vehicles on roadsides and council land created hazards for motorists, as they could cause visual distractions and traffic congestion issues. The vehicles could also cause damage to grass, vegetation and tree roots. “We are not trying to stop people from advertising the sale of their vehicles, but they must do so on their own property, or elsewhere,” Ms Lindner said. “We have to keep road reserves and council land clear for safety and environmental reasons. “People may feel that they’ve found a prime spot to park their vehicle where the sale sign can be seen, but it’s important that we keep the road clear of driver distractions.” Owners may receive an on-the-spot fine of $200. Details: www.mrsc.vic.gov.au/laws or 5422 0333.
Wanted: Enthusiastic school crossing supervisors. Macedon Ranges council is putting out the call in response to a shortage of supervisors across the shire. Cheryl Wilkinson, who has supervised children at New Gisborne Primary School for the past 35 years, is encouraging others to join her. “Some of the kids I used to help cross the road years ago are now coming through with their own children,” Ms Wilkinson said. “I was a single mum and had two small boys at the school. Being a crossing supervisor was a perfect fit because it meant I was home for my boys in the afternoons.” She prides herself on remembering student names. “It makes them feel special and they remember my name, too,” she said. The council manages 20 school crossings across the shire and employs 36 supervisors. Community safety manager Anne-Louise Lindner said school crossing supervisors played a valuable role in the community. “We appreciate their hard work and commitment to ensuring our children are safe,” she said. “Several of our crossing supervisors have more than 20 years’ service with us.” For information or to apply: 5422 0333 CHERYL WILKINSON

Legacy enriches the generations
WALLACE CLARK
(Supplied)
By Esther Lauaki The families of soldiers killed or disabled, physically or mentally, while in armed service have taken to the streets over the past week to raise money for Legacy. Sunbury Widows Club secretary June Clark, 87, was among those who turned out for this year’s appeal, which runs until Saturday. Clubs and organisations around Australia sell the iconic Legacy badges that will be worn on Badge Day this Friday. Legacy was formed in 1942 and raises money to support some 80,000 widows and 1800 children and people with disabilities Australia-wide, offering help for essential
services, such as counselling, special housing, medical aides, advocacy and social support. Mrs Clark says Legacy Week is not a celebration for her family, but a day to remember her husband, Wallace Clark, who died in 1999 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Mr Clark was a chief steward in the Australian navy, serving on the HMAS Moresby from 1942 until 1945. “He was a very caring man,” Mrs Clark says. “We were married in 1951, and had three children, Ramon, Michelle and Andrew. “The legacy that my husband left behind lives on in our six grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren.” The long-time Sunbury resident says she
joined the widows’ club for the camaraderie. “We have a lot of lovely women in the club, who have all been in similar situations,” Mrs Clark said. “Our men never spoke much about their service. “Our club is very active, most of us are in our 80s, and some of the husbands served in Vietnam. “It gives us a chance to have companionship and raise money for Legacy to support other families like ours.” Sunbury Widows Club was out selling Legacy badges in Sunbury Square last Sunday in readiness for Badge Day on Friday. Gisborne residents have dug deep to help fund the equivalent of about 16,460 meals for SecondBite to deliver to families doing it tough. Coles customers at Gisborne helped raise more than $6500 for the national food recovery charity, which redistributes surplus fresh food to families in need. Their efforts have meant the Gisborne store became the second highest fundraiser of any Coles store in the state during a recent five-week campaign. Gisborne campaign team members hosted activities and shoppers donated at the checkout, purchasing $2 SecondBite donation cards, which cover the equivalent of five healthy meals, to help people in need. What’s your connection to Macedon Ranges? My connection has been through volunteering on the Malmsbury town hall committee, the Malmsbury Fayre committee and the Malmsbury Advance Association. Generally, my connection with the Macedon Ranges is that I live here and I call myself a ‘Malmsbury enthusiast’. I get pleasure from seeing the community coming together to achieve great things for the town. Our town hall committee has brought the town hall to life with an ever increasing number of events, as we improve the venue in so many ways, with new chairs, new stage curtain, an acoustics system and beautiful new kitchen.
I think that translates to a concern for others. My mother was my role model. She did a lot of work for the home for the blind, where I had an aunt who lived there. And she looked after everyone in our street when they were unwell.
You help Gippsland farmers with food donations. Fill me in on this work. My concern for the plight of our dairy farmers has grown and grown. As time went by and I could sense the despair being so apparent, I mobilised the local community, with the help of my partner, Terry. Today, I am responding to a plea for help in the Yarrawonga region. I know it is a drop in the ocean, but I feel there hasn’t been a significant response from our governments. I think there are greater issues transcending into other farming areas, and our food security. But my biggest concern is for the livelihoods and welfare of these farming groups. Plus the communities they work in are affected, a flow-on effect, if you like. My other volunteer work centres on Collingwood Children’s Farm. I have been doing that for more than 10 years.
What do you do to relax? Well, I love my garden. I have an orchard, which was my dream. I grow a variety of flowers that become posies, called Tussie Mussies. I have done a few weddings with those. Growing herbs is also a passion. I write an article for the Malmsbury Mail. Other relaxing activities include travelling around with my partner in his motor-home, attending classical music concerts at the Melbourne Recital Centre, walking and cycling.
Why is helping in community so important? My social conscience is pretty well developed.
What do you love about Malmsbury? There are some real characters who live here. Many are generous spirited. The village atmosphere of Malmsbury has an intrinsic charm about it. And there are many picturesque places close by. Malmsbury is wonderfully located within reach of Daylesford, Castlemaine, Kyneton, Trentham, Woodend, Lancefield.
What would you change about Macedon Ranges? I enjoy the cultural activities they have presented at the town hall in Kyneton. However, I would like to see more commonsense evident in some of their planning issues. I think we have an over abundance of sporting facilities … I just think the arts could get more consideration. Sometimes I feel Malmsbury is a bit of a forgotten end of the shire.

As might be expected from a place designed and built about 50 years ago by the renowned Robin Boyd with input from Sir Roy Grounds – a much-decorated architect of the modernist movement – Baker House is something truly special. It’s been described by experts as one of Victoria’s most important in the post-World War 11 period. On 12.15 hectares of bushland, the house is a rustic masterpiece, designed on geometric principles, with locally quarried slate, large windows and unique ceiling treatments delivering inspirational beauty. Living spaces are numerous and five bedrooms share three bathrooms. A central courtyard is the spot for entertainment and contemplation – the entire place would make a fab wellbeing centre or artists’ retreat, let alone a great family home or weekender. A two-bedroom cottage and studio/library are substantial inclusions.
At the front of a north-facing block shared with just three others, this cracker of a unit will have downsizers and investors vying to take ownership. Within about 500 metres of Calder Freeway access, the unit has two grey-carpeted bedrooms that share a spacious bathroom with timber vanity unit. The same timber is in dado panels and lines the cathedral ceiling (with exposed beams and joist) in the carpeted living room, which adjoins the entry walkway and meals zone – each with terracotta-toned floor tiles. The kitchen has no lack of timber cabinetry, topped with white laminate (matching wall colour throughout), and cooking appliances are electric. The laundry is separate. The meals area opens to a covered pergola and large, secure yard beyond. A split-system tames the climate and there’s a remote-controlled garage.

This dwelling backs on to the Goonawarra golf course, with a large, tree-edged water hazard creating a scenic backdrop to the covered outdoor area. On a block of about 789 square metres and in a quiet court, the house has three good-sized, grey-carpeted bedrooms that share a separate toilet and a bathroom. The main bedroom has its own powder room. Entry is directly into a lounge room with honey-toned floating floorboards, apple-green wall paint and a bay window. This room connects with a tiled family-meals area and a kitchen featuring plenty of bench space and a gas cooker. A glass slider from the meals zone opens to a small pergola, with the big backyard beyond offering plenty of scope for improvement. Within a two-minute car trip of Goonawarra Primary School, the property has heating and cooling and an integrated garage with workshop space.

In a premier pocket of town, facing a pretty reserve with bridged creek and walking track, this is a place that dials up the style factor in terms of sophistication and class. These attributes are at the fore in elements such as generosity of entry hall width, extra-height doors (some with opaque glass), ceiling heights ranging from 2.7-metres to significantly more in the living hub, jarrah floorboards and window dressings running the gamut of dark-stained plantation shutters, on-trend sheers, roman blinds and streamlined rollers.

A combination of designer light fittings and LED downlights keeps things shiny and bright. Of the four bedrooms, the huge main one (next to a study at the front door) has a fitted dressing room and chic en suite with freestanding oval tub, beautifully tiled shower and dual vanity basins. The other three rooms, each tastefully decorated, adjoin a taupe-carpeted hallway and there’s a delightful kids’ lounge room, gleaming main bathroom, separate toilet, and laundry with generous storage.
An open, step-down sitting room with gas log fire is along the entry hall, at the end of which is the grand living hub under a white-plaster pitched ceiling with four deeply recessed skylights. The kitchen has a stone-topped island bench, white soft-close cabinetry, a butler’s pantry behind an opaque-glass door, underbench oven, 900mm gas cooktop and concealed Bosch dishwasher. Two sets of stacker doors open seamlessly to an integrated, L-shaped deck and side yards where the same exceptional

stone walls on show in the front garden retain the higher-set lawn areas. A garden shed is in a fenced-off concrete area (perhaps dog run or basketball practice). The property, which backs onto the golf course, has double-glazed windows, gas ducted heating, refrigerated cooling, ducted vacuum and extended double garage with back roller door and internal access. The block size is about 1002 square metres. Carole Levy

Why pay advertising in a
HOT MARKET? With interest rates at a record low, strong buyer demand and an under supply of homes for sale, we have literally thousands of buyers looking to secure property. Which can be evidenced by our internet based database via a live report. Many agents will tell you they have the buyers, then your property sits stale on the market for months with no sale. Ask yourself this question. Agents are all telling me that the market is hot, they have lots of buyers wanting to buy my property, BUT they want me to pay thousands of dollars to advertise it to find a buyer? Makes sense doesn’t it?? No not really!
Why not select an agent that backs up what they say with a financial guarantee! We guarantee we will introduce buyers to your property free of charge therefore there is no risk on your part!. Naturally if we negotiate a sale on your terms we will charge a selling fee to do so. This offer is valid for September 2016 only, so to discuss this innovative and risk free approach call 9740 9000. For full Te T rms & Conditions contact our office on 9740 9000. Should you have a current Exclusive Sale Authority with another agent please disregard this communication.
We’ll introduce buyers FREE OF CHARGE

“CONFUSION!”
$619,000
“Find the best agent”; “Open Agent”; “Rate My Agent” plus a variety of Vendor’s Advocates! How very confusing it all is when thinking of selling a property. There are so many Agents to choose from and now, to complicate things even more, there are a variety of web-sites and advocates who will apparently help you choose the “Right” Agent, achieve a higher price and all for nothing! A branch manager that I worked with many years ago had a saying which went – “The only free cheese is in the trap!” – So true.
Your tree change oasis awaits. An abundance of water all year round with bore and tank for constant supply plus leafy views as far as the eye can see. Special features include air conditioning and gas ducted heating (bottled gas). Come and see the peaceful life style this property has to offer of . • Main spacious bedroom with fantastic WIR & large new ensuite • 2 more large bedrooms with BIR • Country style kitchen looking out to large dam / garden nooks • Light filled sunroom for parents wanting their own retreat • Fabulous lounge & formal dining ideal for entertaining • Family bathroom with corner spa & French doors opening to garden • Sitting room with giant pot belly • workshop to delight the tradesman boasting space for 8 cars
Do not be caught up in the “it’s a free service” because someone is paying and that someone is the Agent and then, you! Now let me explain. Many of the sites available charge a fee to the agent for the agent to appear and it may well be that the Agent will then pass that cost on to you – the Vendor. ndor Advocates offer ndor. of to help you “choose the right Agent” at no charge to you - Advocates do however, however take a substantial percentage of the commission charged by the agent. Would you go to work if someone was going to take 30-50% of your wages for doing very little? So, how to choose the right Agent for your property sale?! 1) Interview at least three Agents and at odd times Sunday morning or late afternoon – will they turn up? 2) Ask around the area – who has the best reputation and achieves the most sales? 3) Do you feel comfortable with the Agent and do you feel that the agent is working for you!

Avoid confusion and stick to tried and true methods of making such an important choice – Face to Face contact and “gut instinct”!

SPORT Right mindset takes Riddell through to the next round Seven days is a long time in football – Riddell showed just how long in Riddell District Football League. In the final round of the season, the Bombers were embarrassed by Rupertswood in both the seniors and reserves. As luck would have it, the two clubs would again face off on Saturday in both seniors and reserves – this time in elimination finals. First the reserves took to the park. Twice the Sharks got out to the front, before the Bombers responded and went on to win by nine points. The seniors started in a similar way, with the Sharks starting the better of the two sides kicking three goals to one in the first quarter.
The Bombers turned it around and led by 23 points at half-time. Both teams struggled to score in the third quarter, before the Bombers made the most of kicking with the wind. Kicking six goals to two in the final term, the Bombers won 14.9 (93)-7.8 (50). Bombers’ coach Jamie Elliott said he was delighted with the turnaround from the week before. “The mindset was completely different and the senior players came to play this week,” he said. “They went through the motions last week, which was disappointing as a coach as third
place was on the line. The pressure acts were there and they wanted the ball this week.” Having watched the reserves match, Elliott put a man behind the ball in the first quarter to help against what the Bombers thought was a four-goal breeze. It worked, as they restricted the Sharks to just a two-goal advantage. From there it was all the Bombers. “It was a windy day and we got the ball to the dangerous spots,” Elliott said. “There was a lot of pressure on their shots and we defended really well.” Brian Ruffell was the main man up forward, kicking six goals, with Elliott saying the work of Ruffell and James Nolan to bring the ball to

ground in the forward line created a number of opportunities. Matthew Panuccio was best on ground with Paul Sahlberg and Scott Walsh’s work also vital. The loss means the Sharks are yet to win a senior final since joining the competition in 2014. For the Bombers, it’s their first finals win since the 2014 elimination final. This weekend Riddell face Macedon, which lost to Diggers Rest. Diggers Rest plays Broadford in the other semi-final. For more on Diggers Rest’s win, go to www. starweekly.com.au/sports. Tara Murray

Sharks scrape into semi
Romsey held its nerve until the very end to win a second straight thriller in the Riddell District Netball League. After beating Lancefield by one goal in the final round, the Redbacks needed extra time to get past Melton Centrals in an elimination final on Saturday. The Centrals had started the better of the two sides and held a seven-goal lead early on, to still be in front by four goals at the final change. Scoring the first six goals of the last quarter, the Redbacks hit the front before Centrals hit back, with scores level at the final siren. Both periods of extra time were similar to the final quarter, the Redbacks started well, then Centrals hit back. With one goal up and less than a minute to go in the second extra-time period, the Redbacks made sure Centrals didn’t score, so sealing their win 55-54. Redbacks’ coach Lena Way said players had the confidence in each other to win such close games. “It’s about peaking at the right time,” she said. “We beat Lancefield by one goal last week, and now won by one goal in overtime this week. “We’re coming together at the right time. Everyone has combined, and it’s really positive on the court.” Hope Evans was key in the goal circle, shooting 43 goals, while Chelsea Ross scored eight. Way said at the start of the season they would have let games like the past two get away from them, and it shows how far the team had come. She said the late inclusions of Danielle Davidson and Bronwyn Blair had been a big part of that. Davidson was best on court on Saturday, while Blair started well before hurting her ankle. Way said Blair would be a wait-and-see prospect for the semi-final, with her ankle still not looking good the day after the game. “She’s a tough little cookie, who has played through injuries before, and she’ll want to play.” Way said another key aspect for the side is its experience in finals, with players who know how to handle the pressure. Davidson, Blair and Hope Evans were part of the Redbacks’ last premiership in 2013. “The team is very experienced in age, and many have played at an elite level,” Way said. “We have six girls over the age of 30. Sport is a funny thing and you have to peak at the right time. “A lot feel the pressure, but we seem to embrace the pressure and seem to improve.” The Redbacks will play Macedon in a do-or-die semi final on Sunday.
It wasn’t pretty, but Rupertswood’s A-grade side has tasted success in the opening round of the Riddell District Netball League finals for the first time. The Sharks have lost in the opening round of the finals the past two years. This year there was no second chance – the Sharks had to beat Diggers Rest to progress. Both sides entered the game without key personnel. The Sharks were missing Kirsten Daley, Beck Anstey, Sara Febbo and Natalie Billings, while the Burras were without Stephanie Barnes and Meredith Ball. Despite being happy with the 50-40 win, Sharks coach Di McCormack said it wasn’t one of their best performances and they had a lot to work on. “It was a very ugly win,” she said. “Diggers Rest played really well … they had nothing to lose and really brought it to us. “It was a game which we never looked like losing, [but] I would have liked to have played a bit better and won by more.” Stacey Northey was the best of the goalers with 21, while Amy Starzer (16) and Alex Maher (13) also contributed. McCormack said her young mid-court stood up, with the coach not having the luxury of a big bench as she normally does. “Em [Ktona] was solid at wing defence and did a good job,” McCormack said. “Sid [Moore] and Ailish [McCormack] sometimes lead to the same spot, but they fed well into the goalers, which they struggled with last week.” Zoe Davies, who came on after quarter time, was also a standout in defence. The Sharks will face arch rival Riddell in the semi-finals. A grand final spot awaits the winner and a preliminary final for the loser. The Bombers defeated the Sharks by one goal in the final round of the season. “The last two years, we’ve gone into the finals in second position and lost that first final [to Riddell],” McCormack said. “There’s not that same pressure this year and if we lose we still have another chance. There’s a fire under the belly – to win next week and get through to a grand final.” Riddell won through to the preliminary final with a win against Macedon. Jets beat nerves, smother Supercats’ attack
Courtney Duever was the key to the Sunbury Jets’ win on Saturday night. (Shawn Smits)
There’s one thing you can almost guarantee when Sunbury Jets take to the court in Big V women’s division 1: their defence will stand strong. It was no different in game one of the grand final series against Geelong Supercats on Saturday night. It wasn’t a pretty game, both teams struggling offensively to ensure a low-scoring affair. The Jets, though, did what they do best, restricting the Supercats’ attacking end. The Supercats were held to fewer than 10 points in each of the first two quarters. At half-time the Jets led 31-16. The third term opened up a tad. Supercats won the quarter by two points to keep the door slightly ajar, but the Jets stood firm to win 62-41. Jets coach Kennedy Kereama believed both sides suffered from early nerves, but he was proud of how his team was able to stand strong
defensively. “We hung tough, but we didn’t have our best offensive night,” he said. “Our defensive level was above theirs and it was pretty satisfying; I’m proud of the girls. “[Holding them to] two seven-point quarters and a nine-point quarter was pretty excellent, but I don’t think we were comfortable until the last couple of minutes.” Kereama said offence was one area they could improve heading into game two and, possibly, game three. Courtney Duever was superb for the Jets, scoring 33 points at 48 per cent shooting accuracy while hitting six three pointers, but he had little support. “It was one night where we had four or five [shooters] not really firing,” Kereama said. “To be fair, we have seven cylinders and normally have five cylinders firing, but we had just one. “Our defensive efforts won it for us. Courtney was pretty good last night and there was a lot
Lions count cost of win By Tara Murray On Saturday, Sunbury’s players turned from cubs to lions in the Ballarat Football League. On two occasions against Darley in their elimination final, the Lions could have dropped their heads. The past two years they would have but this time they fought on. The first occasion was early in the third term when the Lions were found to have too many players on the field. A scuffle just before half-time led to Tim Hill receiving a yellow card, meaning the Lions had to start the second half with 17 players. They mistakenly played the first 34 seconds of the third term with 18 players, the penalty likely to be deduction of any score they registered in the third quarter. In fact, they managed just 20. The extra-man- on-the-field incident is being investigated. While the scoreboard said the Lions still led by 45 points at three-quarter time, under the penalty they held a margin of 25 points. The Devils, kicking with the wind, booted the first three goals of the last quarter to reduce the margin to seven points. The Lions responded with five of their own to ensure a 15.13 (103)-7.11 (53) win, the margin of which will likely change when the investigation is completed. Lions coach Rick Horwood said it was satisfying to see the plan they had put into place come to fruition. “We’ve been smashed by bigger bodies in the past, but this year the younger players really stood up,” he said. “[They include] the two Wood brothers, Jesse Flannery, Tim Hill, Nathan Bridgland and Dwain Sanderson. “It was a different aspect [losing the points] and the young guys could have dropped their bundle. The experience from the last couple of years has benefited them massively.” While the Lions’ late composure sealed the win, it was their dominance early that set it up. They led 43-1 at quarter-time and could have been further ahead had they kicked straight. At the same time, they restricted the Devils to just one inside 50 for the quarter and laid a massive 21 tackles. Alik Magin kicked four goals and Jack Landt three. Ruckman David Kovacevic was best on ground. Horwood was full of praise for Adam Short and Joe Redfern in defence and Mathew Medcraft in his 100th game. The Lions now face Bacchus Marsh in a semi-final and have secured a double chance. “We haven’t played them since round one,” Horwood said. “We had a three-goal lead and then lost. It was a long time ago.” The Lions A-grade netball season came to an end against Ballarat on Sunday. After a final round slip-up, the Lions found themselves in an elimination final and struggling to have enough qualified players. A last-quarter comeback fell short, the Lions losing 48-45. David Kovacevic was best on ground in the Sunbury Lions’ win against Darley.
of great teamwork in defence, which helped get her into the right spots.” Every player was given court time and Kereama said they would be better for the experience. While he didn’t like singling out players, the coach praised the defensive efforts of Alex Darby in her first season in the competition. The Jets take a 1-0 lead into the grand final series ahead of game two at 7pm, Saturday, at Boardman Stadium. Game three, if needed, will be at 1pm on Sunday, also at Boardman. “If we play like that again, we’ll be hard to beat,” Kereama said. “I feel we’ve one hand on the championship, and another defensive night like that we’ll have two hands on it. “We’ll stay focused and make some adjustments. I know how good Geelong are.” Tara Murray
Losing Tigers stay in touch with top five Kyneton is through to the Bendigo Football League finals for a second successive year – despite a final-round loss to Sandhurst on Saturday. Both sides had a lot to play for going into the final round, the Tigers wanting to stay in the top five, the Dragons seeking to claim the minor premiership. After an even first quarter, the Dragons had kicked six goals to one to open up a 35-point lead. The Tigers hit the front in the third quarter to lead by 11 points going into the last break. But they couldn’t maintain that endeavour in the fourth quarter, with the Dragons winning 17.14 (116)-12.11 (83). Mitchell Scholard kicked three in the loss for the Tigers, while Jonno Nash kicked two and was his side’s best player. Despite the loss, the Tigers finished the season fifth, equal on points with fourth-placed Eaglehawk and sixth-placed Kangaroo Flat, and will face Eaglehawk in an elimination final. Meanwhile, Gisborne’s season finished with a massive loss to finals-bound Strathfieldsaye. The Storm was too strong winning 20.13 (133)-6.9 (45). Jake Conolan was the only multiple goal-scorer for the Bulldogs with two. The Bulldogs finished the season ninth with three wins. In the A-grade netball, Gisborne enters the Bendigo Netball League finals on the back of a loss to Strathfieldsaye. With a big percentage, the Bulldogs finals hopes were never in doubt – it was simply a matter of whether they would finish fourth or fifth. Against the sixth-placed Storm, the Bulldogs struggled in a 42-33 loss. The Storm will miss out on finals on percentage. The Bulldogs will play Maryborough in an elimination final on Sunday at Queen Elizabeth Oval. Maddie Stewart is expected to return to the side after completing Victorian Netball League commitments with Melbourne University Lightning. The Magpies jumped ahead of the Bulldogs, into fourth spot, with a win over South Bendigo. Kyneton finished its season with a 55-33 loss against Sandhurst. Kyneton finished seventh. Tara Murray
