Gisborne’s gift to glamour By Esther Lauaki Two Gisborne blokes are hoping to take on Kim Kardashian in a battle of the back-lit mobile phone cases developed for selfie-lovers. Former police officer Mark Ainsworth recruited his long-time gym buddy Matthew Goss to develop MirraMirra – a new iPhone 6 case with a slide-out mirror complete with backlighting and ‘mood’ lighting. The slim-fit, durable case uses an app to control the strength and colour of lighting emitted from the phone’s screen for the perfect selfie. Small LED lights around the mirror provide sufficient light for applying or improving makeup.
The device was designed to rival a similar product created by celebrity Kim Kardashian, which sells for almost $A100 in the US. Mr Ainsworth said it had taken more than 18 months to perfect the prototype, which was launched in Toronto last week. He said the idea came up over coffee in a Gisborne cafe. “I was sitting there with my mate Darren Storace, who’s a chippee, brainstorming ideas for a business,” Mr Ainsworth said. “We saw a woman sitting in The Corner Cafe trying to apply makeup using the front camera on her iPhone. Women struggling to do a face check in selfie cameras, window reflections and even the mirror effect from a knife is what sparked the idea.” Mr Storace later went on to pursue other
ideas then Mr Goss joined the team and now drives marketing remotely from his home in Canada. The case can be dropped from 2.5 metres without breaking, will fit the iPhone 6 and 6s models and comes in rose gold, marble and black varieties. “We’re targeting the woman who spends a lot on makeup and has hundreds of selfies stored on her phone,” Mr Ainsworth said. “We wanted to create a go-to solution attached to our most attached possession, our cell phone. It’s a basic idea that fills a need. “We involved a team of beauty bloggers, focus groups and a female-led media team to vet every angle of this project to make sure we nailed it. And we feel we did.” More information: www.mirramirra.com The MirraMirra iPhone case. (Supplied)

Forces join to save Jacksons Hill By Esther Lauaki Sunbury residents have backed a state government decision to appoint the Municipal Planning Authority to drive the redevelopment of Jacksons Hill’s historic former mental asylum and Victoria University campus. The state government, Hume council, Victoria University and residents have agreed any development of the buildings, known as Caloola, must have a community focus. Planning minister Richard Wynne last week said a proper masterplan process would
need a whole-of-government approach, and consultation with the Sunbury community would be integral to this process. Sunbury Residents Association president Bernie O’Farrell welcomed the opportunity to participate in the masterplan. “The association has campaigned for a long time to have the Jacksons Hill VU site, Caloola, retained for use in the community, and preferably that should be an educational use,” he said. “Having a masterplan might be a step in the right direction, and we would be more

than happy to be involved in the community consultation.” Sunbury MP Josh Bull tabled a petition of more than 1200 signatures in June that called for the state to protect the 35-hectare site. Mr Bull said he is determined Jacksons Hill is retained for education and community uses.
“After four long years of inaction, the Sunbury community is finally seeing real steps taken to protect this important site,” Mr Bull said. “This government will work to protect the important heritage that belongs to us all, and bring back to life a much-loved community asset for the benefit of all.” But any suggestion that a section of the site, which is already zoned residential, may be sold to raise money to refurbish historic buildings was a concern for the residents association, Mr O’Farrell warned.

Then there’s the artform of tying your own fly, which tricks the fish into thinking it’s alive and imitates what it’s been feeding on. “No matter what size fish you catch, big or small, it still gets your heart racing. Every day is different. One day the fish will bite, the next day you won’t catch a thing. That’s the challenge.” 12321515-CG36-16 10037005-35
The Calder Fly Fishing Association is hoping an open day next month will lure new members from around the Ranges. Australian fly fishing champion Mark Hobbs is encouraging fishing enthusiasts to be at Woodend’s Buffalo Stadium for the open day on October 16. The Gisborne-based club was formed in 2013 and has 65 members. Mr Hobbs hopes the open day will inspire more people to take up the sport. He has represented Australia at the Commonwealth Games, won gold in the team event at the
On a recent trip to Thailand Mr Hobbs caught on the fly numerous arapaima – giant fish up to 40kg which are also found in the Amazon River – and red tail catfish. “That really opened my eyes up to the different species of fish that can be targeted on a fly. I’ve been doing this since I was a kid fishing around the Macedon Ranges with bait then lures.” The Calder Fly Fishing Association runs fishing trips throughout the season. Could naming and shaming vandals be the solution to curb graffiti in Hume? The council spent more than $200,000 in the past financial year cleaning up after vandals to remove more than 18,700 square metres of graffiti. Volunteers also removed an additional 14,950 square metres of graffiti across the municipality. The most requests for graffiti removal came from Craigieburn, Sunbury and Broadmeadows, according to a report tabled at the council’s August meeting. Hume council received 697 graffiti removal requests and 81 calls to its graffiti reporting hotline, with most of the sites being community facilities such as park furniture, buildings and public toilets. Sunbury councillor Jack Medcraft said he was fed up with the proliferation of graffiti around the region and called for harsher penalties for vandals. “We need a review of the closed circuit cameras that we have so that we can catch these offenders,” Cr Medcraft said. He wanted offenders to be made to wear vests that identify them as vandals while cleaning up their graffiti. Sunbury Pride program founder Alan Douglas believes the regular removal of graffiti often discourages vandals from repeat offending. The program operates two vans, from the Craigieburn and Sunbury police stations, for volunteers to go out and clean graffiti. Hume council has a program that involves young people painting legal street murals and police directing youths to diversionary programs. “These programs do work; they just don’t work for everyone,” Mr Douglas said. Hume highest for cruelty reports By Esther Lauaki Hume and the Macedon Ranges are counted among the state’s animal cruelty hotspots, a recent report from RSPCA Victoria reveals. Of the 11,840 cruelty reports received by RSPCA Victoria this year, Hume was the source of 362 reports of cruelty and the Macedon Ranges generated 139 reports. Chief executive Dr Liz Walker said the geographic analysis of cruelty reporting would help RSPCA target its prevention efforts to areas that needed it most.
“Our vision is ending cruelty to all animals – and we know that prevention is the key to ending cruelty,” Dr Walker said. “Over the next year, we will be using this data to help us identify the areas that would benefit from community education and support.” The RSPCA reports showed that dogs, cats and horses continue to feature in those issues reported to the RSPCA in the past year. Of the 139 cases reported in the Macedon Ranges, 44 related to dogs or puppies, six to kittens and 46 to horses. Most of the concerns reported were about animal hygiene,
underweight or starving animals, and sick or injured animals not receiving care. Former wrestler Bruce Akers was arrested and charged with animal cruelty and criminal damage offences after police found more than 20 dead and dying horses on his Bulla property in April this year. That case is currently before the courts. Meanwhile, James Jonathan Calleja, a 34-year-old from Melbourne, is due to be sentenced in Bendigo Magistrates Court on September 12 on three animal cruelty charges, two trespass charges and weapons offences.
He was found guilty of shooting a kangaroo, named Spot, in the head with a crossbow at a property at Ashbourne. “Even one cruelty issue is one too many, yet the number of reports we receive is steadily increasing every year,” Dr Walker said. “We know that the community is becoming more concerned about animal welfare – which may be part of the reason for the continued rise in report numbers. “What is particularly disturbing is the fact that many of the issues reported to us involved very basic animal welfare matters.”
Hit-run drives campaign A new safety campaign is urging Macedon Ranges cyclists to “see and be seen” on the roads. Signage went up last week at collision hotspots for a Light Up The Road campaign aimed at encouraging cyclists to consider their visibility on the roads. Campaign co-ordinator Mark Rigby said the initiative, which runs until October 30, was a collaboration between Bike Safe Macedon Ranges and RoadSafe Central Victoria. “Road safety is a responsibility shared by all road users,” Mr Rigby said. “We encourage cyclists to be visible in all conditions and all road users to see and be seen. “Our Light Up The Road campaign has a number of billboards on the roads in our region.” The campaign launch coincided with the release of information about a man police want to speak to as part of their investigation into
a serious hit-run incident in Toolernvale last year. A 26-year-old woman cyclist was struck by a vehicle on October 3 while riding her bike along the Gisborne-Melton Road. The vehicle failed to stop. The cyclist received serious injuries, was taken to hospital by ambulance and has since been released. The vehicle involved in the collision is believed to have been a white VT or VX Commodore sedan. Police believe the passenger-side windscreen, guard and side mirror would have been damaged in the collision. The driver is described as Caucasian, in his 20s, with his head shaved and tattoos on his neck and arm. Esther Lauaki Campaign co-ordinaor Mark Rigby. (Damjan Janevski)

Lights, camera … action Emerging young producers and directors hit the red carpet this week at Sunbury College’s inaugural film festival. College students, as well as others from Diggers Rest and Sunbury primary schools, have been scripting, casting, filming and editing their own films after school for the past six months. The final cuts of more than 20 entries will be shown on the big screen this Thursday at the event, which will channel all the glitz and glamour of a Cannes or Hollywood premiere. Youth engagement worker Byrona Tweedy and media teacher Tess Abbott said the aim was to get young people thinking about a future in the film industry.

Kyneton school to get trades hub By Esther Lauaki A brand new trades learning hub is on the horizon for Kyneton Secondary College. The college’s masterplan includes refitting of all the existing buildings as well as the new trades hub to offer TAFE training. Principal Mark Ridgeway says the masterplan has been a long time in the making and will be an important development for the school.
“We’re very excited,” he said. “This has been planned and discussed for 15 years, but the masterplan was created only in the past year. “There have been some false starts and hiccups along the way, but we’re very pleased to be moving forward. “We’ve also had commitments of $11 million in funding this year and believe this should enable us to complete the project.” He said building will start early next year.
‘‘
Most of the work will be to refit the existing buildings
’’
- Mark Ridgeway
“We need this upgrade. The current infrastructure has been here for many years and is no longer suitable for our modern teaching techniques.
“We’ve kept it in good nick, but it’s in need of this upgrade. The classrooms are very traditional and they’re outdated so most of the work will be to refit the existing buildings. “They’ll be totally refitted to support our 21st century teaching and learning practices. “The addition of a brand new trades and Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) hub is exciting.”
Buds bloom for fair Garden lovers are ringing in the new season with all the fun of the fair. More than 1500 visitors are expected to converge on the historic Bolobek gardens at Macedon for the annual Mount Macedon Horticultural Society Garden Lovers Fair on the weekend of September 17-18. The fair has been run for more than a decade and attracts visitors from around Australia. About 30 stallholders will include local and interstate specialist plant growers, tool makers, sellers of garden power tools and garden furniture importers. Stalls will also be selling lunches, homemade cakes, biscuits, jams and jellies, and garden produce. Society secretary Christine Heazlewood and committee member Chris Williams will be on hand to welcome new members. Ms Heazlewood says visitors can also sample local wines and wander through the impressive property. “Bolobek, in the foothills of Mount Macedon, is an historic place that’s been
inspiring gardeners for more than a century,” she says. “It’s a very apt backdrop for this event.” ABC television gardening personality Stephen Ryan, of Dicksonia Rare Plants in Mount Macedon, will be among the special guests offering tricks of the nursery trade throughout the weekend. The fair is open from 10am to 4pm. Entry is $10 but free for visitors under 18. Details: www.mountmacedonhorticulture. org.au Esther Lauaki

MY PLACE Malmsbury resident Suzanne McDonnell left the newsroom to roll up her sleeves and help feed the homeless. She speaks to Esther Lauaki about her love for the community.
I live near Malmsbury. How long have you lived in the region? Nearly 25 years. We moved here from St Kilda. I understand you used to be a journalist. What made you want to commit yourself to Sacred Heart Mission. I came across Sacred Heart Mission when I was working on The Australian. I was impressed with the way Sacred Heart assisted the homeless, striving to empower people who often struggled with drug and alcohol addiction and mental health issues. A high number experienced trauma and abuse in childhood. In February I moved to Foodbank Victoria. I am the volunteering manager with this amazing community service organisation which provides food relief to the one in 10 Victorians experiencing food insecurity. It astounds me that in this affluent country that one in seven primary school children go to school without breakfast or that anybody – particularly young adults – should be homeless and without family to care for them. What other community work do you do? I have recently joined my local CFA as a volunteer. While I am not brave enough to
fight fires, I volunteer as the support and fundraising manager. Our brigade needs to raise funds to purchase a much needed second fire truck. It never fails to move me to see how volunteer firefighters give up their time to rush to all sorts of emergencies like car accidents, chemical spills as well as bush and house fires. What are your favourite spots in the Macedon Ranges? Black Hill Reserve, the Campaspe River walk at Kyneton, Malmsbury Viaduct, Honour Avenue in autumn at Macedon, Birthday Villa Winery, Dhaba at the Mill restaurant in Kyneton. What do you love about where you live? Tranquility, winter frosts, amazing sunsets. Knowing where to find pine mushrooms, wild apples and plums. Living among galahs, cockatoos, wood ducks, cheeky crows, rosellas and fairy wrens. The occasional snake, blue-tongue, turtle, echidna or wombat in the backyard. I drove through Taradale one night last summer and the road was lined on each side with loads of kangaroos like they had just gotten off a tourist bus. Amazing. What would you change if you could? Provide more employment opportunities in the area for young people and 24-hour access to crisis intervention services, support, care and accommodation for people experiencing mental health trauma.

Breakfast smoothies – There’s an endless variety of healthy ingredients for great smoothies, the beauty of them being they’re super easy to whip up and take with you on the road. Try blending almond milk, chia seeds, banana, pumpkin seeds, coconut oil, avocado, raw cacao, and two or three pieces of dried fruit for added sweetness and fibre. Add some coconut oil to your smoothie as a good way to feel fuller longer.

Country views in all directions make this fab 40.46-hectare property a standout. Land is well suited for horses, sheep, cattle or other critters, with five dams (two spring-fed), abundant tank water, potential for a bore and well-fenced paddocks. Set up for horse lovers, there’s a new shed for three stables, wash bay, horse float drive-through, with holding yards and potential for extra stables or feed storage. A large second Colorbond shed is ideal for garage, machinery or workshop. The house has charm, warmth and gentle elegance in its living-dining room (warmed with wood heater) with french doors to the wrap-around verandah. The kitchen has lots of cupboards and bench space, a wall oven, electric cooktop and dishwasher. Four bedrooms share a bathroom, and the laundry has a mudroom space and a second toilet. And a five-minute trip will have you in Lancefield.
Just five minutes to the village and V/Line station, this great property reflects city style in country comfort, on about 1.61 hectares of pristine bush, with a great dam and a seasonal creek. The house is wonderfully rustic, with elements including brick floors and timber ceilings, exposed beams in the two living rooms and kitchen – along with a wood heater and a fireplace framed by a period-style surround. Timber-framed windows are numerous and room sizes are generous. Timber cabinetry fits out a modern open-plan kitchen. Three bedrooms are upstairs (two with walk-in wardrobes, one with a built-in), as are a study and bathroom, with subway tiling, a clawfoot tub and period vanity unit. A covered walkway connects the house with a double garage, and a detached studio (with power) presents options.

As new and built to executive standards by Porter Davis Homes, this house has been cleverly sited on its block of about 2598 square metres to allow for potential subdivision (STCA). Taking in views of the Macedon Ranges, the layout here comes with a vast, tri-zone living hub, a theatre room, and a children’s lounge room, around which are three bedrooms, a bathroom, a separate toilet and laundry. The main bedroom is huge and links with a study near the front door – it has a walk-in wardrobe and extra-big en suite. The kitchen is slick, with stone benchtops, red glass splashback, walk-in pantry and stainless-steel appliances. There’s ducted heating and evaporative cooling. Bifolds open to an alfresco zone overlooking a huge yard with cubby house and gardens. Schools, cafes, childcare and sporting facilities are within a short drive.
In a sought-after pocket of the village and within a five-minute walk of the primary school, this property, of about 3942 square metres incorporating lovely English and native plantings, will tempt families seeking a retreat lifestyle. The three big bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and the main has en suite. A carpeted lounge-dining room has a fireplace with an externally accessed wood box, while the family-meals area has a wood heater. A carpeted rumpus room could serve as a fourth bedroom/teen retreat. The kitchen has timber cabinetry, breakfast bench and a dishwasher. An elevated, undercover deck takes in leafy views and there’s a pretty recreational dam and a garage-workshop. Walking tracks nearby and Mount Macedon views are bonuses.

In a pretty spot on the village edge, Cedar Lodge has all the best bits of rustica, but a good deal of polish and pizzazz. The large house suits its foothills milieu perfectly, the kind of place that has a permanent weekender vibe – country soul, simple but lovely gardens and ponds, all the comforts of great indoor climate control, a workshop to tinker in, a brilliant parents’ retreat, and a kitchen that inspires whipping up scones or a fragrant curry … you get the drift. It roosts on a block of about 2769 square metres, and two primary schools, the train station, the highly regarded local

Private sale watering hole and Trading Post’s great coffee and house-made foodie treats are all within a three-kilometre radius. Entry is under a deep verandah that wraps around two sides, into a huge, tri-zone living hub, which shows off wonderfully what makes this place – sky-high cathedral timber ceilings with exposed beams and joists; steeply peaked clerestory windows streaming in northern light; jewel-like stained glass upper panes on windows dressed in soft-charcoal roman blinds; an acre of lovely hardwood floorboards; and a Jetmaster fireplace stunningly framed in stone.
The kitchen in here celebrates native hardwood, on an island bench and in cabinetry with deep drawers. St George is the tag on induction cooktop and 900mm underbench oven, Miele on the dishwasher, corrugated iron and stainless-steel form splashbacks, there’s a cupboard pantry, and vistas of garden and dual-level deck can be had at the sink. Up timber stairs, past a storage room and through double doors, the vast main bedroom/retreat has front and back dormer window seats oozing charm, two walk-in wardrobes and an en suite.

Three ground-floor bedrooms (each with wardrobe and desk) share two bathrooms, and a sitting room with a door to the back verandah and the gardens, two pretty ponds and expansive lawns, are beyond. The laundry near here has great storage and combines with a mud room – storage seat for muddy gumboots. Other keynotes are a Coonara wood heater, gas hydronic heating, split-systems, double carport, garden shed, water tank, all town services and a watering system. Carole Levy

31 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 6, 2016
SPORT Riddell rises to challenge By Tara Murray Riddell is through to a third straight Riddell District Netball League A-grade grand final after defeating arch-rival Rupertswood on Saturday. After an even first quarter, the Bombers landed the first blow, opening up a 27-19 lead going into half-time. The margin remained at eight heading into the final term before the Bombers scored the winning blow for a 51-36 scoreline. Bombers coach Jarrad Walker said the side was pretty excited to make it through to the grand final. He said after a slow start to the match, they really got going after quarter-time. “We were having trouble in transition coming out of defence,” he said. “We were a little hesitant with how we were taking the ball out, but we were getting plenty of turnovers. “We set some structure and got better transition.” Among Walker’s successful changes was bringing on Brianna De Haas at wing defence to replace another under-19 player, Kira Baldwin. “Brianna worked herself into the game and was brilliant for the rest of it. She showed she can step up. “I’m honoured to have those girls with the side. Since signing with the club, I’ve wanted to build a pathway … to see it come to fruition in a final was a good feeling.” After failing to put Macedon away in the final quarter the previous week, Walker said they were keen to ensure it didn’t happen again. “That was our last-quarter focus and Loz [Lauren Close] spoke to the girls and I left it for her to manage,” the coach added. “She was brilliant for three quarters after a slow start again.” Bec Colwell was best of the shooters, scoring 36 of the Bombers’ goals. Midcourters Carly Harrison and Tarryn Munro were adjudged best on court. For the Sharks, Stacey Northey shot 22 goals, while Ailish McCormack was named their best contributor. The Bombers now have a week off before the grand final, where they’ll face the Sharks or Macedon who play this week in a preliminary. For more pictures of Saturday’s game, go to www.starweekly.com.au
Tigers ejected at first finals hurdle again Kyneton’s season is over in the Bendigo Football League after it fell at the first finals hurdle for a second straight year. Looking to go further than last season, the Tigers faced Eaglehawk in an elimination final on Sunday afternoon. Nothing separated the two sides in the first two quarters, with the Hawks taking a slim seven-point lead into half-time. The warning signs were there for the Tigers when the Hawks took their game to another level in the third quarter. Kicking four goals to one, they increased the margin to 24 points heading into the final quarter. Any hopes the Tigers had of getting back into the game were quickly ended, with the Hawks running away to win 20.9 (129)-11.8 (74). Mitchell Scholard kicked four goals for the Tigers, while Nathan Thompson and Hugh Schiavello kicked two goals each. They were all overshadowed by competition-leading goal-kicker Matthew Gretgrix, who kicked nine goals for the Hawks. Ethan Foreman and Jonno Nash were named the Tigers’ best in the loss. Meanwhile, in A-grade netball, Gisborne is again through to the second week of the finals after defeating Maryborough in an elimination final. An 18-goal third quarter set up the 29-goal win for the Bulldogs, who were happy to have their full squad available after some players missed the past two rounds. The Bulldogs, who won 64-35, will play Golden Square in a do-or-die semi-final on Sunday. Gisborne’s only other team in finals, its under-18 football side, was knocked out in an elimination final against Eaglehawk. Gisborne went down 17.6 (108)-8.4 (52).

Restocked Burras hoping it’s fourth time lucky Is this the year of the Burra? Riddell District Football League fans will know in two weeks after Diggers Rest won through to its fourth successive grand final. Clearly the best team all season, the Burras enter the final decider as the team to beat. But they’ve been here before, and have lost the past three. Burras coach Shaun Sims thinks they have a better squad than last year when they lost by 10 points to Romsey. Sims said the outside run added by Michael Evans, Cale Morton and Taylor Hine had complemented their inside game. “Ultimately, the goal is putting yourself in a position to be in a grand final and we’ve done that,” he said. “Our game style has changed and we’ve brought in some guys who make us better. The players we already had have got better, too.” In Saturday’s semi-final against Broadford, the Burras left their best till after half-time. It was a similar story against Macedon the week before in the qualifying final. Last Saturday, the Burras kicked the final eight goals to win 15.18 (108)-5.9 (39). Sims said turnovers were the story for his side in the first half.
“It was a bit of a grind through that half,” he said. “Broadford’s bigger bodies made it tough … We had 20 turnovers in the first quarter and a fair few in the second. Once we cleaned up disposal we played on our terms.” The Burras benefited from Broadford being a player down after one was sent from the field. “Tom Gleeson stopped them going forward every time,” Sims said. “It wasn’t about them scoring, more about us being able to counteract.” Burras’ Cameron McCabe starred up forward, kicking five goals, while Brandon Kilty, Jason Williams and Taylor Hine managed two each. Stephen Ruane was judged best-on-ground. Sims said they would look closely at how to prepare for the grand final. He said much of the first week off would be about recovery, with several players pulling up sore. “If we’d had to play this weekend, a couple of blokes likely wouldn’t have made it.” The Burras’ reserves also have a week off after beating Sunbury in their preliminary final.

Unbeaten champions want to take it up a notch When newly appointed Sunbury Jets’ women’s coach Kennedy Kereama said he wanted to take the Jets from competition strugglers to championship winners, eyebrows raised. The Jets had never won a title and their last grand final was in 2009. Only two years ago, they finished bottom of division 1 and were lucky not to be relegated. Fast-forward 10 months, and Kereama and his side have delivered a first championship. Not only did the Jets win, they produced one of the most dominant seasons in Big V history. Eyes quickly opened wide when the Jets defeated last year’s runners-up, Geelong Supercats, by 15 points in round one. After surviving a scare against Camberwell in round three, which they held by just six points, the wins kept coming for the Jets. This was despite coach Kereama missing the middle chunk of the season while on national duty with the New Zealand women’s team. The Jets finished the regular season undefeated, with an average winning margin of 31 points. They were clearly the best defensive side
and held the same title at the offensive end. There was no concerns about not handling the pressure of being finals favourites, as they won their four finals by an average of 22 points. The Jets are the only state league team from across Australia to go through the season undefeated. Kereama said he knew he had made a big statement early on, and is thrilled they’ve achieved their championship goal. “Probably a few people were a little critical of me coming out and saying that,” he said. “Thank god the club backed and supported me … we got a great group of girls together, a great blend of experienced players and local talent, and they all brought into what I was about.” While the championship is the icing on the cake, long-term the club and Kereama are hoping it’s the start of something bigger and will inspire the next generation of basketballers. “I want to bring everyone back and look at making the move into state championship.” Tara Murray

Perfect season for Jets
Young Cannons blown away by Chargers
By Tara Murray Sunbury Jets finished their season in style by claiming their first ever Big V women’s basketball title on Saturday night. The Jets’ division 1 season started with a big win against Geelong Supercats on a Saturday night back in March. It finished the same way – with the Jets defeating the Supercats in game two of their best-of-three game grand final series. The Jets won game one 62-41. On Saturday night, in front of their home crowd, the Jets played as they had all season to win 79-54. They dominated on the defensive end, shutting down their opposition’s best scorers, before capitalising at the offensive end. Only two points separated the teams at quarter-time. But the warning signs were there for the Supercats, with the Jets already having seven steals. The Jets held a match-winning 27-point lead at three-quarter-time – and that was exactly where the Jets wanted to be heading into the last quarter. It meant every player had the chance to take to the court in the last 10 minutes. Each player played at least four minutes as the Jets savoured a championship win – the first in the 21-year history of the club’s women’s team. Jets coach Kennedy Kereama said it was a relief to have completed the perfect season. He said it was at the defensive end where the win was set up. “It’s something we’ve worked hard for all season,” he said. “We set ourselves a pretty good target … it’s nice it’s over. “Defence is something we’ve prided ourselves on. “For that to come through … it’s nice to know you put things in place with a heavy concentration on one thing and the girls got it done. “It’s probably our shining light all season … now we get to celebrate the incredible season we’ve had.” While the defensive end set up the win, it was out-scoring the Supercats 27-10 in the third quarter that sealed it. Kereama said that fourth-quarter effort came on the back of a stirring speech from Courtney Duever, who was later named game MVP. She had figures of 28 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists and six steals. She had 33 points and 16 rebounds in game one of the grand final series. Duever wasn’t originally part of the Jets’ plans for this season. “She’s a class player,” Kereama said. “I’m just glad she made contact with me. We were probably going to go with what
Grand final MVP Courtney Duever goes high for the Jets. (Shawn Smits)
we had and then we had a couple of knee injuries and that made it easier to bring someone else in.” Emma Mahady, Monique Stevens and Jess
Bygate also secured double-figure goal tallies on Saturday. For more pictures of Saturday night’s game, go to starweekly.com.au.
The gap between the Calder Cannons and the top sides in the TAC Cup was obvious in the opening round of finals. Having finished in eighth spot, the Cannons faced two-time reigning premiers Oakleigh Chargers in the first round’s elimination final. The Cannons had the bulk of the inside 50s early, but weren’t able to hit the scoreboard and were left to watch as the Chargers made the most of their opportunities. The Chargers led by 13 points at quarter-time, but that was as close as it would get for the rest of the match. A seven-goal-to-zero second quarter blew the game open, and the Cannons couldn’t find any answers. It was much the same for the rest of the match, with the Chargers winning 23.10 (148)-5.12 (42). Cannons’ coach Andrew Johnston said the result was an indication of where the team was at this season. “We knew we were the bottom of the top eight sides, to be honest,” he said. “Once Oakleigh, Sandringham and Eastern Ranges all got their players back, we knew they would be too good. “The attitude has been super all year, we just didn’t have enough star players.” Johnston said as soon as they weren’t able to convert, players dropped their heads and the side deflated a little. With the game over, Johnston switched players around, making sure the 18 and 19-year-old players in their last games for the Cannons finished on the ground. He said most in Saturday’s side would go up into open age football next year. Johnston said the result this season was what they’d expected pre-season after being knocked out in an elimination final last year. “To get to play finals is a reward, and take no credit away from Oakleigh Chargers, they were too good.” Ben Ronke and Noah Balta kicked two goals each, with Ronke named best in the loss. Johnston said Ronke and Zachary Guthrie were their best chances come draft time. Balta, Dylan Landt and Brad Bernacki would be players to watch next season for the Cannons. Tara Murray

Bombers attack to the end to win preliminary berth Riddell is through to the Riddell District Football League preliminary final after winning a thrilling semi-final against Macedon on Sunday. The Bombers led for most of the match but were never able to break the Cats who were looking to avoid exiting the finals in straight sets. The Bombers’ biggest margin was 18 points at quarter-time and again 12 minutes into the last quarter when Ben Said kicked his second goal of the term. It looked like a match-winning lead, but the Cats had other ideas with Daniel Markworth kicking the next two goals. Ben Said responded with his fifth to extend the Bombers’ lead before a Matthew Knox goal brought the margin back to one kick. Jason Cooke had a shot on goal to snatch the lead for the Cats, but he missed and the Bombers hung on: 13.5 (83)-12.8 (80).
Bombers coach Jamie Elliott said it was a great spectacle for supporters of both sides, a match neither side could take complete control of. “They held us and we held them,” Elliott said. “It was a good game of footy and they have some great players like Markworth and Cooke. Markworth, who can really play, got a hold of us late in the game and Cooke was brilliant all day.” Elliott said that after extending the lead to 18 points in the last quarter, they had decided to continue on the attack. “We had eight to 10 minutes left and I thought we could keep attacking,” he said. “Cooke had the shot to put them in front. We then had a lot of decisions to make about keeping on attacking or putting players behind the ball. It went our way.” Ben Said and James Nolan kicked five goals each for the Bombers, while Cooke kicked
five for the Cats. Elliott said Said had matured this season after crossing from the Sunbury Lions. “He’s a young fellow who probably needed to come across to get a different perspective with his football.” Matthew Panuccio, Haydn Ross, Nolan and Said were among the best players for the Bombers, who now face Broadford in a preliminary final for a shot at Diggers Rest in the big one. “I watched the first half of Broadford’s match with Diggers and they played some good footy before Diggers ran over the top of them. We’ll have our work cut out for us,” Elliott said. The Bombers’ reserves will play Sunbury Kangaroos in a preliminary final. Cats claw a close win By Tara Murray Macedon is through to the Riddell District Netball League preliminary final after a thrilling win against Romsey on Sunday. It was a game neither side could absolutely control and run away with. Scores were level at quarter-time. The Cats moved ahead to lead by three goals at the main break, but that lead was reduced to one goal at the last change. Scores remained close in the dying minutes; the Cats had what they thought was a one-goal lead, the scoreboard said it was two. The final score was 49-47. Cats’ coach Ciara Stewart said they were lucky to get the win. “The scoreboard says it was two goals, but we’re sure it was only one goal in the end. “We got lucky in the end that it went our way, but we will take it.” The Cats led by as many as six goals, but in the end it came down to the wire, and the Cats were able to hold on. “We played around a lot with the ball, like we did against Romsey [during the season] and Rupertswood. “We knew how long was on the timer after being caught out in the earlier grades.” Young goaler Tara Burnip was key for the Cats in the win. After struggling last week, Burnip scored 35 goals in a best-on-court performance. “She was exceptional,” Stewart said. “We ended up benching Chloe [Wilson] and that doesn’t happen often. “The goal defence was able to control Chloe and help out on Tara.” All 10 players took to the court for the Cats, including Janelle Birch, who at one time looked like missing the game through injury. “She has been icing every four hours and doing lots of physio … we wouldn’t have won without her.” For the Redbacks, Hope Evans shot 36 goals, and was their best. The Cats now face Rupertswood in a preliminary final. The Cats beat the Sharks by a point the last time the two met. “We’re playing against really good company, and we’re happy to be against it,” Stewart said. “A win is a bonus for us. We’ll be happy with a very great performance. “We need to produce a four-quarter performance, which we haven’t done against Riddell or Romsey. “If this is what we can produce in our first season, then imagine what we’ll be like next year.”

Cobras strike and wound Lions’ pride Sunbury Lions had a massive reality check in their quest for a Ballarat Football League grand final spot. The Lions entered the semi-final match against Bacchus Marsh with plenty of confidence, having won their past seven games. What came next was possibly their worst quarter of football for the year. They conceded the first seven goals, allowing the Cobras to gain confidence and control of the game. While the Lions kicked four late first-quarter goals, they still had a big task ahead of them. They managed to get back into the game and reduced the margin to 13 points in the third quarter, but that was as close as they got. With the game in hand, the Cobras put the icing on their cake, kicking the last four goals to win 21.12 (138)-14.6 (90). Lions’ coach Rick Horwood said he didn’t see that first quarter performance coming. “They were more aggressive, and it looked like we didn’t cope with the pressure put on us,” he said. “They jumped us, and it was error after error. The endeavour and attack on the footy wasn’t there.” While disappointed with the loss, Horwood said there was still some positives to come out of the game. “We worked really hard to get back to 13 points,” he said. “We were beaten in all three areas on the ground, but to be able to rectify some of the issues shows great character to get back into the game. “They then kicked into another gear.” Horwood said there weren’t many Lions’ winners on the day, with Jack Landt, Tom Donoghue, Adam Short, Grant Valles and Mathew Medcraft named their best. Having secured a double chance, the Lions now face Lake Wendouree in a preliminary final. Bacchus Marsh moves through to the grand final. Horwood said they would look at the weekend’s game early in the week before turning their focus to the preliminary. The Lions know another performance like Saturday will mean the end of their season. The Lions’ reserves side also suffered a semi final loss. They will play East Point in a preliminary final. Tara Murray
