No bang for bucks, residents Macedon Ranges Residents Association wants more bang for their buck after it was revealed property owners pay some of the highest rates in the state. A comparison of rate bills from 79 councils for 2014-15 on the state government’s Know Your Council website shows ratepayers in Macedon Ranges paid about $1823 in the past financial year. That was just $8 less than the average Manningham bill – where some of the state’s second highest ratepayers live. Residents association secretary Christine Pruneau said people are struggling to understand how their rates dollars are being spent. “It’s a bit of a revelation to see how Macedon Ranges shire compares to other regions on how much they paid in rates,” Ms Pruneau said. “It’s all well and good asking people to pay money, but they want to see value for their money – useful projects priorities and responsible return to the community. “I don’t think that people are convinced that they are getting the best service that they’re paying for. I guess we just have to be thankful that we don’t live in Nillumbik.” Nillumbik, in Melbourne’s north-east, topped the municipal big spenders with a $2463 average rates bill – the only council to exceed the $2000 average mark. At the other end of the scale, the average residential rate bill in Greater Dandenong for the same period was just $864. This is thanks to its concentration of commercial
and industrial properties, which pay higher rates. Rates notices for 2016-17 went out to Macedon Ranges property owners last month. Early predictions were that rates would rise to more than $2000, on average, about $50 more than 2015-16 bills.
‘‘
Our results reflect high levels of financial efficiency in … services - Peter Johnston
’’
This year’s budget was based on an average increase of 2.5 per cent for this financial year. But final rate hikes could be even steeper for many property owners as this year has also been a revaluation year. Macedon Ranges council chief executive Peter Johnston said the average residential rate bill for Macedon Ranges householders quoted in the Know Your Council data includes kerbside collection fees, which some councils don’t include. “Overall, when compared to similar councils and the state averages, our results are extremely positive, but we also recognise that these results cannot tell the full story – all councils and communities are different, and specific circumstances and priorities always influence results,” he said. “Our results reflect high levels of financial efficiency in the delivery of services, transparency, compliance and high usage levels for services.” Comparative data of this year’s rates with last year’s will be on the Know Your Council website in November.

An organic approach to health Two Sunbury women are making healthy, organically grown produce more widely available this spring, and they want to spread the word. September is Australian Organic Awareness month, which celebrates all things organic, including food, skincare, textiles, cleaning and garden products. Koula Courtot and Christie McIntosh run the Sunbury Organic Food Co-operative, a non-profit group that aims to make organic products available that might otherwise be too expensive. Produce is purchased in bulk directly from growers and wholesalers and members pack the produce themselves when it’s delivered to Sunbury Community Health Centre. Each co-op member pays a small fee and volunteers once every six weeks. Information: sunburycoopenquiries@gmail.com Esther Lauaki

Councillor posts fuel race fears By Esther Lauaki Hume’s mayor fears that a series of racially inflammatory social media posts by a fellow councillor could undo years of work towards a culturally sensitive and inclusive community. Cr Jack Medcraft has been slammed on social media in recent weeks after he shared and posted several controversial pictures and comments on his personal Facebook page between June and August this year. They related to African youths and a story about Muslim girls refusing to share a swimming pool with male students.
‘‘
It’s disappointing to see a councillor … undo that hard work
’’
- Helen Patsikatheodorou
The posts have come under fire from an Islamic group and resident Phillip Di Biase who is running for Hume council next month. “The issue I have is with the language and disrespect for others that Cr Medcraft shows in these posts,” Mr Di Biase said.
“It’s unacceptable. If he has a problem with being politically correct then perhaps politics is no longer the place for him.” An official complaint has been made to the Local Government Investigations and Compliance Inspectorate. Mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou said she had not seen the Facebook posts but that any external complaint about a councillor would be investigated. “We, as a council, try very, very hard to be very, very inclusive of all cultures and faiths,” Cr Patsikatheodorou said. “It’s disappointing to see a councillor do something which could
undo that hard work that we’ve undertaken across the years. “It’s been a very peaceful community, a very inclusive community – I think comments like this could be inflammatory to people who don’t need much pushing.” Last year, Cr Medcraft publicly apologised for labelling Hume the “terrorist training centre of Australia” on a closed Facebook group. But Cr Medcraft is now telling his critics to “get a life”. He said he stood by his posts and said they were aimed at radicalised Muslim extremists. “They don’t represent the true Muslim in the community,” he said.
Trains stopped for track works Bendigo line trains will be off the tracks next month as some 700 workers blitz level crossing removals and other upgrades to the northern rail corridor. Buses will replace trains between Sunbury and Sunshine, and the Bendigo line will close completely from October 4 to 30. Two dangerous and congested level crossings at Main Road and Furlong Road at St Albans will be removed, while the existing Ginifer and St Albans station buildings, earmarked for demolition, will make way for new stations. In conjunction with the level crossing removals, V/Line has scheduled more than $46 million of upgrades to the Bendigo, Swan Hill and Echuca lines to minimise disruptions to rail travel. Sunbury MP Josh Bull said crews will remove mud holes and replace older signalling infrastructure as part of more than $360,000 allocated for this aspect of line upgrades. “Our community depends on reliable train services, and these improvement works will help us run more trains, more often,” Mr Bull said. “We know these works will be frustrating for passengers, but we need to upgrade our tracks to ensure passengers can get where they need to go safer and sooner.” Other works include upgrades to classic Victorian railway infrastructure, such as the Taradale viaduct, Malmsbury viaduct and the Elphinstone tunnel. A temporary timetable is available at staffed Metro and V/Line stations. Passengers are urged to allow an extra hour travel time. Details: www.vline.com.au

New push for equine centre By Esther Lauaki The push is on again to get an equine centre up and running in the Macedon Ranges. Upper House Liberal MP Wendy Lovell has called on the state government to give Macedon Ranges council the $40,000 it needs to move forward with its plans to establish a purpose-built equine centre for dressage events and competition. The council developed an equine strategy that included an international-standard indoor equestrian arena, and it also outlined a strategic direction for the equine sector for the five years ending this year. Up to 160 hectares would be needed for the project, and a site has not been selected. A feasibility study determined last year that the project would significantly benefit the local economy, but the plan received a mixed response from residents. Macedon Ranges Residents Association [MRRA] objected to the proposal, labelling it an “unnecessary financial juggernaut”. “We have six of nine councillors [who supported the proposal] prioritising economic empire-building, instead of responsible governance,” the association submission stated. “Council pours more and more of our budget into big pet projects like this useless, expensive, over-the-top equine centre, while cutting back on what counts.” But Macedon Ranges Equine Industry Network spokeswoman Tracey Robertson said the feasibility study had proved there was a demand from the industry and community.
“A large-scale equine centre would provide opportunities, not only for pleasure and competition riders, and another much needed all-weather venue for our pony clubs and adult riding clubs, but for the whole community,” she said. “It will also attract more visitors to the region … and provide additional state-of-the-art facilities for non-equine pursuits, such as agricultural activities, trade shows; undercover or outdoor markets and other sporting events.”

Macedon Ranges council put up $25,000 for the business case, and sourced an additional $35,000 from the industry network and the federal government. “Macedon Ranges council went away and secured significant funding [on its own]… and is hopeful that the government will provide this funding so it can proceed with the business case of this project,” Ms Lovell said. Ms Lovell said that Macedon Ranges council’s equine strategy estimates the equine industry generates about $140 million annually to the local economy. “The masterplan has been approved by council – the next steps to be taken include the development of the business case, which the minister has been aware of for almost 12 months now,” Ms Lovell said.

Beauty in simple things Spring has inspired the latest exhibition at The Gallery in Mt Macedon by artists Chieko Hester and Annette Papax. Buds, Bees and Butterflies runs until October 2, and origami artist Hester has contributed traditional Japanese works to her collaboration with mixed media artist Papax, who will have her photos, as well as pencil, ink and pastel pieces, on display. Papax says last spring’s blooms provided inspiration for works in this exhibition. “No matter how gloomy or tangled the world becomes … somewhere there is light and joy, colour and play,” she says. “My current fascination is bees, hence the spring theme and bee photography.” Hester’s art draws from her Japanese heritage.
“I fondly remember my fascination and enthusiasm for origami, beginning about six years old, when my father taught me to fold a paper crane,” she says. “Origami is an ancient cultural discipline, reflective of both the complexity and simplicity of nature and the world around us.” Hester combines eastern and western aesthetics in her pieces and sources authentic Yuzen Washi origami papers from Japan. “I truly appreciate Japanese tradition and culture – a sense of calm and serenity, the joy of nature, and the beauty in simple things,” she said. www.thegallerymtmacedon.com.au Esther Lauaki

Sunbury College students will soon have regular access to a doctor on campus. The college is one of 100 schools taking part in the Doctors in Schools trials announced last week. Participating schools partner with local doctors, who visit the schools for up to one day a week, with students able to get referrals to specialists and the help they need, before it affects their studies. Education minister James Merlino said the program would be most beneficial to regional Victorians who have trouble getting healthcare. “Doctors in schools will give students reliable healthcare, reduce the pressure on working parents and GPs, and help young people address their health concerns early,”

High rainfall increases fire risk By Esther Lauaki Central Victorians are being warned to be prepared for an intense fire season this summer, after a wet winter and spring. The 2016 Bushfire and Natural Hazards Co-operative Research Centre outlook predicts forested areas around Melbourne won’t dry out until late spring because of above-average rainfall during September and October. There is also a high probability of above-average temperatures over the next six weeks or so. “This could see rapidly escalating fire behaviour later in summer,” the outlook states.
Emergency Management Victoria (EMV) commissioner Craig Lapsley said fire preparations need to focus on central Victoria, and the west of the state, particularly urban interface areas. He said while the fire season is not likely to start until December, it is likely that any fires that do occur will be intense and spread fast. “Even when you’ve done cutting your grass in spring, there could be regrowth because of higher than average rainfall,” Mr Lapsley said. “What they do in late October and November, they should also do in late December and January,” he warned.
‘‘
It only takes a few really hot days to dry everything - Sam Strang out
’’
Mr Lapsley’s comments come during a state inquiry into fire season preparedness, and the impacts and effectiveness of preventative burns. Last October a planned burn got out of control and almost 3000 hectares burnt near Lancefield, including four houses, 25 sheds and thousands of kilometres of fencing.
Macedon Ranges, Cobaw and Wombat state forests remain among the highest bushfire risks in Victoria, Gisborne CFA captain Sam Strang said . Mr Strang urged residents to be prepared. “The long and short of it is that people need to be prepared for the upcoming season,” he said. “It only takes a few really hot days to dry everything out, and then we’re at risk of a bushfire any moment. You never know when one could start. “Residents can clean up their properties of debris, keep the grass low.” Information: www.cfa.vic.gov.au
Tell us something … Residents affected by last year’s Lancefield fires have been given a creative outlet for their stories, and their recovery. Something About Us is a short film competition devised especially for people impacted by last year’s devastating blaze, caused when a planned burn got out of control. The competition invites participants to choose a genre, be it comedy, action, drama, horror, thriller, adventure, documentary, animation or a biographical theme, for their works. Film-making and film genre workshops get under way this Saturday at Lancefield Neighbourhood House, and filmmakers have until November 20 to produce entries of no more than 10 minutes that explore something about them, the community or where they live, stories that may reflect on historic events … or what’s happening right now.
The project is a partnership between the state government, Macedon Ranges council and the neighbourhood house. Film-maker Brigit Heller will take participants through short courses to learn the basics of production, how to use simple equipment, film directing, camera operation, sound and editing. “We are inviting families, individuals, or any community members, to be creative and tell their stories with a short film,” Ms Heller says. Saturday’s workshops are noon until 4pm, and on Monday 1-5pm. Further workshops are on October 18, 4-6pm, October 22, 10am-2pm and October 25, 4-6pm. Childcare centre takes on servo By Esther Lauaki Plans for a petrol station next to a Sunbury childcare centre have fuelled fears that enrolments will stop and families will leave. Forever Friends Childcare Centre manager Kristy Wilkie says she will object to the proposed development of a four-pump service station next door. A service station would be the worst development on the vacant lot, Ms Wilkie said. “There is the issue of fumes, of vehicles
coming in and out, and clearly no parent will want to send their children to a centre next door to a petrol station,” she said. Ms Wilkie said she was alerted to the plans for 94-96 Horne Street when a town planning sign went up on the site last week. She said a petition launched on Tuesday objecting to the plan has already been signed by almost 600 people. The childcare centre has operated from Horne Street for eight years and is one of Sunbury’s largest, with 32 educators, 141
Heartfelt help at hand It’s been six years since Ian Prosser had a heart attack … and lived to tell his story. Today, he’s beating the pavement along with 65,000 volunteers around Australia, door-knocking for this month’s Big Heart appeal. “I wasn’t expecting it at all,” Mr Prosser recalls of his own experience. “I wasn’t feeling very well at home, and was taken to the hospital, where I later had the heart attack. “I had a triple bypass and was in hospital for quite a while. I was very grateful for the attention I received from doctors and I appreciate the work the Heart Foundation does – that’s why I chose to volunteer. “Without people’s generosity, we wouldn’t have the care and services that we have today.” Heart Foundation’s chief executive John Kelly said the impact of losing a loved one is devastating, and when it happens without warning, it’s even harder to comprehend.
“This September, we’re raising awareness about sudden cardiac death and funds for research – together we can stop other families from losing loved ones unexpectedly,” Professor Kelly said. “Sudden cardiac death is tragic and can happen to people at any age.” More than 1200 families will lose a loved one to sudden cardiac death while the Big Heart Appeal is on this month. “The Heart Foundation is already funding researchers investigating many of the causes of sudden cardiac death and how we can treat and prevent it,” Professor Kelly said. “The fight against heart disease … depends on vital heart research continuing.” Details: www.bigheartappeal.org.au Esther Lauaki Ian Prosser with Rosie, who donates every year. Within coo-ee of Clarkefield train station and a short drive from Sunbury, this JG King-built, steel-framed residence with wrap-around verandah sits on about 1.21 tree-rimmed and immaculate hectares. The house has three large bedrooms, the main with walk-in wardrobe and en suite with a spa. The sizeable living hub (with wood heater) includes a meals area with bay window, and enough tiled space to set up a study, from where french doors open to the back verandah. There’s also a separate, grey-carpeted lounge room. The kitchen has loads of timber cupboards, dishwasher, gas cooktop and electric oven. Outdoor treats include seating around a firepit, extensive vegie patches and lawns, a chook house, about 56,781 litres of tank water, a yabbie-stocked dam (with jetty), and a three-car shed/workshop with shower and toilet.
With outstanding views towards Mt Macedon, this high-calibre house on an elevated block of about 1806 square metres is in a fab pocket of town, with an environmentally friendly playground and parkland on the doorstep and village centre within a four-minute drive. It has four good-sized bedrooms, the main with walk-in wardrobe and en suite; a connecting study is next door. A separate lounge room with quality floating floorboards provides space to escape, and the expansive family-meals area (also with floorboards) opens to a great alfresco area where those views come to the fore. The large black and white kitchen has all the mod-cons. Gas ducted heating, air-conditioning and ceiling fans ensure seasonal comfort, while an alarm system provides peace of mind. A sealed driveway heads past attractive landscaping to a double garage with internal access and back roller door.

This historical residence, the former train station complete with original platform (now verandah and entry point) and station master’s office (now a study), has permits to continue operating as the Old Railway Café and B&B, and to reopen the former nursery. The house, also tempting for a family that values history, is amid fabulous gardens, and has four bedrooms – one with en suite on the upper level. Three large bedrooms downstairs share two bathrooms. A charming living room (now the café) links with a big kitchen-family-meals room, and heritage features are found throughout. A huge pergola and verandahs are relaxation hotspots, and plantings and pathways make garden exploration a delight – of particular note is a Monet-inspired bridge vignette.
Within a stroll of Sunbury Heights Primary School, Sunbury Downs College and parkland, this residence combines with a huge workshop to meet the needs of a young working family and a tradie/hobbyist respectively. Of the three bedrooms (two with built-in wardrobes), the main has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite. The living hub has jarrah-toned floorboards, and is warmed with a wall gas heater, while evaporative cooling tames summer heat. The kitchen has white cabinetry topped with soft-grey laminate, a large pantry, dishwasher and 900mm gas cooktop. A large pergola above grey coloured-concrete faces a lawn rimmed with hedging. The remote-controlled 6 x 9 x 3-metre workshop has power connected and couples with a 9 x 3-metre shed. An alarm, water tanks and a double carport in front of the double garage-sized workshop are other features.

High, plaster-finished raked ceilings in the family-meals zone are a standout feature. The area’s open-plan design ensures this space will be the central hub for residents. The kitchen has all the work space cooks will ever need. It has granite topped benches, a wall oven, gas cooktop and a walk-in pantry that’s smartly set behind the arched entry wall. Big windows in the family area gives
the space a sunny, leafy outlook while the slow combustion heater will keep everyone toasty on chilly nights. There’s also a separate lounge/dining room, which could be used for special gatherings. The three bedrooms are of a good size and share two bathrooms. The rustic feel continues out the back in the form of a gorgeous, low-maintenance yard. It has reclaimed timber fencing,

rail sleeper retaining walls and recycled red-brick paving. At the end of Kurung Court West is a walkway leading to Gisborne Secondary College and the property isn’t too far from a Calder Freeway on-ramp. Other features include double-glazed windows, solar hot water with gas booster and a remote-controlled double garage. Eleanor Tabone

“AN EARLY SIGN OF SPRING”
$398,000
While we sit huddled around our fires or rugged up in our winter woollies to venture outside, early signs of spring are beginning to show. Daffodils Daf are in bloom and the Canola fields are amass with golden flowers - a sure sign that longer and warmer weather is near. near
Such a pretty home is waiting for a new owner and it could be you! Situated on a very large block with excellent side access. Private, quiet and tucked behind a picket fence this could be the perfect home for the young family; retirees wanting room for a caravan or those wanting space for a big shed.
There has existed for many, many years the idea that Spring is the best time to sell, but why? Prepare now and beat the Spring rush and even though the market is somewhat volatile at present, there are genuine buyers out and about.
An abundance of storage is a feature of this charming home. Feed the birds, enjoy the privacy and a large, well maintained block.
A fascinating development in the Real Estate Market is the increase in the demand for rental properties and I believe that this trend will remain for sometime. We are living in a world economy which is quite extraordinary and as much as we would like to believe that the Macedon Ranges is immune, the reality is that we are not. More and more people are employed on a casual basis or on contract and therefore renting is quite often the only option for wonderful hard working people. There are many opportunities in real estate - it is not only about selling or buying the family home, it is also about wise, long term investment.
Your “Home, sweet home’ is here. An inspection will delight. • Three large bedrooms all with built-in-robes • Spacious formal lounge/dining with cosy solid fuel heater • North facing family room with gas heater (town gas) and split system • Neat, user friendly kitchen • Very pretty bathroom • Good laundry plus mud room • Extra large double garage
The bulbs are on the move, so perhaps it is time to think about the future - to upsize or downsize. To invest in bricks and mortar may have been a lifetime dream, maybe this is the time to discuss the dream and make it a reality. Yes there are many opportunities in Real Estate and we are always very happy to discuss options with you without pressure or obligation.

SPORT Square brings Gisborne’s gritty season to an end
Melinda Luke won the BNL’s under-17 best and fairest award. (Shawn Smits)
Gisborne’s Bendigo Netball League season came to an end with its eight-goal loss to Golden Square on Sunday. Playing for a preliminary finals spot, it was an up-and-down first half, with the Bulldogs leading by three goals at quarter-time, before Golden Square went up by the same margin at half-time. Golden Square increased that lead in the third quarter, sealing victory after a strong last quarter to win 57-49. Bulldogs’ netball operations manager Noelene Rymer said it was just one of those days, they were beaten by a better team. “They had a really strong attack end, with Gab Richards [former Australian basketballer] a key target,” she said. “The girls worked hard and tried, but Golden Square were just too good in the end.” Rymer said, while the result was
disappointing, to make the finals was a good achievement after even this was in doubt at one stage. “It has been a good season, and we were one of four teams playing for two finals spots. We’ve come from fifth and won one final.” The Bulldogs’ under-17 team is through to the grand final after a semi-final win against Strathfieldsaye on Sunday. The Bulldogs, who haven’t lost a match this year, but has had two byes, won 41-39. The Bulldogs were up by as many as 10 goals in the match, but went to sleep in the second half as the Storm came at them. They will play either the Storm or Kangaroo Flat in the grand final in two weeks time at Queen Elizabeth Oval. Meanwhile, the league announced some of the competition’s best and fairest winners on Friday night.
Gisborne’s Melinda Luke tied with Kangaroo Flat’s Danielle Markwell in the Sing Medal, the under-17 netball best and fairest award. Both finished on 25 votes. Luke’s Gisborne teammate Holly Doricic finished fourth. Luke, who was runner-up for the award last year, showed her versatility at the weekend, moving from defence to attack, despite a sore foot, in the side’s final match of the season. Kyneton’s Jess Mangan won the B-grade best and fairest award, her 25 votes four clear of Eaglehawk’s Rani Madden and Strathfieldsaye’s Taylah Morris. Tigers’ Max Sullivan was named the football rising star. Other awards, including the Michelsen and Betty Thompson medals will be announced on Sunday. Gisborne star Madeline Stewart is among those invited to the count. Tara Murray
Riddell, Rupo, Macedon vie for RDNL flags
Macedon’s Chloe Wilson looks to get a pass through the midcourt. (Shawn Smits)
Cats close to the cream By Tara Murray Macedon was just happy to put out a good performance and see what happened in the Riddell District Netball League preliminary final. All season the Riddell and Rupertswood rivalry had been spoken about, and despite Macedon beating the Sharks late in the season, it was expected the Sharks would win and set up a grand final match with the Bombers. Macedon though, had different ideas. Not only did they put out the performance they were after, they also secured a grand final spot. They now face Riddell in a rematch of last year’s grand final. It was the Cats who started the better of the two sides on Saturday, leading by four goals at quarter-time. They doubled the lead at half-time and looked in control, but the Sharks hit back in the third to bring the margin back to five at the last break. Despite looking the fresher, the Sharks
couldn’t close the gap, the Cats extending their lead to 53-44 to seal a grand final berth. Their coach, Ciara Stewart, in her first year at the helm, said the season had exceeded all expectations. Despite reaching last year’s grand final, the Cats fielded an almost completely different line-up this year. Stewart said they had looked to use this year as the start of something to build on. As for Saturday’s match, Stewart said the main aim was to not let Rupertswood have one big quarter, which they had let the top sides do during the season to get back into games. “Rupertswood weren’t their usual selves,” she said. “They had a couple of big outs and we knew that was something we could expose. “We knew we couldn’t slip up and let them get on top, but we couldn’t shake them off. We didn’t panic and we took some risks that were planned and worth trying.” The Cats used just eight players as they looked to stick with what was working and it paid off as
the Sharks rotated their bench to find the right match-ups. Stewart was named best on court, with Madeleine Huggins in wing defence providing plenty of pressure in midcourt. Chloe Wilson shot 28 goals, with Tara Burnip scoring 25. For the Sharks, Natalie Billings scored 30 goals, with Sidonie Moore judged their best player. The Cats now face the Bombers, who defeated them by nine goals in the qualifying final. The Bombers won the only match-up between the teams in the regular season, by just one goal. Stewart said they had nothing to lose in the grand final. “We only dropped one quarter against them last time. We have a little bit more up our sleeve and have quite a few line-ups. We know that we need to stop Bec [Colwell] from getting the ball a lot quicker than we did.” The Cats will have two sides in the grand final, with their under-19s winning against Riddell in overtime.
Four netball sides from two clubs will be looking to go back-to-back in the Riddell District Netball League grand finals on Sunday. With three clubs contesting the four grand finals, Riddell and Rupertswood will each have three teams going for flag glory, while Macedon will have two, reflecting the dominance of the three clubs this season. Both Riddell and Rupertswood had all their teams through to the preliminary finals and it could have been an all Bombers and Sharks grand final day – but the Cats had different ideas. The Bombers and Cats will face off in a second straight A-grade grand final. It will be the third grand final in a row for the Bombers, who won the flag last year. In B grade, Rupertswood, hunting for its third straight premiership, will play Riddell. The Sharks won the qualifying final between the two sides by two goals. The Bombers’ C-grade side is the second team from the club looking to go back-to-back. In a re-match of last year’s grand final, they will take on the Sharks. In the under-19s, the Sharks are looking to complete their third straight perfect season. They will face the Cats, who defeated the Bombers in overtime in Saturday’s preliminary final. Tara Murray

United’s win to no avail By Tara Murray A disappointing season has ended on a high for Sunbury United in FFV state league 2 north-west. With just four wins for the season, United already knew going into the final round that it would face a second straight relegation for finishing in the bottom two. Up for grabs was the slight chance of avoiding a bottom-of-the-ladder finish. United needed a big win against Corio while hoping Heidelberg Stars suffered a resounding loss to Sporting Whittlesea; that would enable United to move above the Stars on goal difference. In the end, United’s 8-5 win wasn’t enough to shove them above the Stars. Jake McIntyre scored a hat trick for United, while Djafari Mwarabu and Hussein Makelele scored two goals each. United and the Stars finished the season equal on points and goal difference. But the Stars found themselves ahead on the ladder, having scored one more goal while having won the aggregate between the two teams in their two matches, 4-3. In state league 5 west, Kyneton District’s season ended with a 2-1 loss to Keilor Wolves. The Rangers finish the season in fifth spot. The wrap-up of Gisborne’s season is on hold for another week after Friday’s downpour left Dixon Field Reserve unsuitable for play. Seventh-placed Gisborne will now finish its season against bottom-placed Melbourne Lions on Saturday.

The honours continue for Sunbury Lions’ Madison Prespakis. The talented young footballer was last week named in the youth girls all-Australian team after her stunning performances earlier this year in the AFL youth girls championships and at a local level. Her form at the championships saw her selected to play in the national youth girls all-star game before the Bulldogs-Melbourne exhibition match two weeks ago. Prespakis has also been named the Essendon District Football League’s under-18 youth girls best and fairest.

Medal limelight an ‘amazing’ thrill for Macedon coach Macedon’s Ciara Stewart has achieved a lot in netball, but individual awards have been few and far between. Stewart, in her first season at the Cats and in the league, has normally been the one handing out the votes and awards – as coach, she looks at everyone else first. On Wednesday night, it was Stewart’s time to be recognised for her efforts on the court at the Riddell District Football Netball League best and fairest night. She was named the winner of the league’s Ryan Medal, the best and fairest award for the A-grade netball. Stewart finished on 23 votes, three votes clear of 2014 medalist Lauren Close (Riddell) and Diggers Rest player-coach Amy Carroll. Stewart was speechless after winning the league’s top netball honour. “Seriously, I thought Chloe [Wilson] was in with a really good chance from our club,” she said. “I realise my age – I know that it plays a
part on my ability to play the game. There are so many good players in A grade … it’s amazing.” This year, Stewart has taken on a different playing role – having spent most of her career as a shooter, she has made the move to wing attack. She was named in that position in the team of the year. “I’ve never played wing attack until this year, so to be in team of the year as wing attack – it shows people actually value what I do, which is awesome,” she said. “I’m not young and I don’t have the legs of some of the girls, but I know I have a brain.” The 37-year-old said it was the first time she had won an individual award since she was 19. Stewart said the award wasn’t just for her, but her nine teammates who had helped her win it. Stewart, who came to the league from the Geelong District competition, was also named coach of the year. It turned out to be a great week for Stewart, with the Cats winning through to the grand
final. Her teammate, Chloe Wilson, was named on the bench in team of the year. Riddell’s Close was voted the Western Water player of the year by the coaches for a second time in three years and was one of three Riddell players named in the team of the year. Riddell’s Cayley Armstrong was named in centre and her teammate, Bec Colwell, was named on the bench. Rupertswood’s Katie Clarke, Tess Abbott and Stacey Northey were named in the starting seven along with Carroll. Romsey shooter Hope Evans was named on the bench. Riddell mid-courter Carly Harrison was named as netball rising star. Riddell’s Brianna De Haas took out the under-19 best and fairest award, while another Bomber, Jayne Close won the C-grade award. Sunbury Kangaroos’ Toni Fogarty took home the B-grade best and fairest award. Tara Murray
Medal joy for Rupo star By Tara Murray Rupertswood’s Brent Swallow was left speechless after being named the 2016 Riddell District Football League’s Bowen medallist. The midfielder, who has been a model of consistency in recent seasons, stepped it up another level this year to take out the top honour at the league’s night of nights. Swallow said he didn’t think he was a chance of winning the award, even when he was at the top of the leader board after round 14. At that stage he was on 19 votes, one clear of Diggers Rest’s Taylor Hine. Swallow held on to win, on 20 votes, with Hine still a vote back. Swallow said that while he felt the Sharks, who were eliminated in the first week of the finals, had played “all right” he was unconvinced he was a good hope of winning the medal. “You don’t know what the umpires are doing,” he said. “It was a complete surprise and I’m rapt.” Macedon’s Jason Cooke finished a further vote back, with Cats Shaun Harrison and Lancefield’s Myles Dorman rounding out the top five. Swallow also took home the Buffalo Sports award, which is awarded to the best player voted by the goal umpires. Hine won the Melton Toyota Football Player of Year award for the best player as voted by the coaches. The two medals are a change of luck for Swallow, who has played all his career with the Sharks. He is the first Shark to win the Bowen Medal, after the club moved to the competition in 2013. “I think for the club best and fairest, I’ve come second the last five years in a row, so it’s good to finally get one,” Swallow said. “Hopefully we’ll see a few more Bowen medallists from the club in years to come.” Swallow was named in the centre position in team of the year. His Sharks teammate, Brett Chambers, was named at centre half-back. Macedon had the most representatives in the squad, with Cooke, Harrison, Casey Summerfield, Matthew Knox and Tom Waters selected. Broadford had four representatives in the team, while Riddell’s Tim Walsh, Brian Ruffell and Ben Said, and Romsey’s Chris and Matt Burkett and Ayden Tessari were also named. Walsh was named Steve Turner medallist for best young player. Lancefield’s Jon Kent, who won the best player in the interleague match, and teammate Myles Dorman were both named in the forward line of the team of the year. Grand finalist Diggers Rest had three players named in the team – Hine, Cale Morton and Brandon Kilty – while coach Shaun Sims was named coach of the year.

Round two of the men’s championship was postponed when Friday’s wet weather made the course unplayable.

Riddell survives Roos challenge By Tara Murray Riddell has set up a grand final date with Diggers Rest in the Riddell District Football League. The Bombers saw off Broadford in their preliminary final at Lancefield Park on Saturday. The Bombers controlled much of two and a half quarters against the Kangaroos before the latter’s more experienced bodies started to find more of the ball. It was all the Kangaroos in the final quarter as they peppered the goals in their bid to reduce the margin. They got within a goal before Brian Ruffell kicked a settler for the Bombers. The Kangaroos responded immediately to get it back with a goal. The Kangaroos were left to rue poor kicking in front of goal – they kicked 3.6 in the last quarter. Their comeback fell just short, with the Bombers winning 8.6 (54)-6.14 (50) and sealing their grand final spot. Bombers coach Jamie Elliott said the winning margin was of no consequence. The Bombers had earlier defeated Macedon in the semi-finals by three points. “We got there by the skin of our teeth,” he said. “I thought we controlled the game for the first two and a half quarters and they got on top midway through the third quarter. “There’s always some doubt that we could hold on. They put [Brodie] Holland and some of their bigger bodies in the middle and it made a difference. Our young blokes hung on.” Competition-leading goal-kicker Brian Ruffell kicked four goals for the Bombers, including the all-important settler in the final quarter. Ben Sonogan, Tim and Scott Walsh and Michael Treweek were the best for the Bombers. Elliott, in his first year as senior coach, said the club was probably a little further ahead of where he envisioned it would be. “At the top end we have a lot of talent,” he said. “You don’t know what you’re going to get from the younger players. Some have come in and then got dropped, but gone back and learnt and got another chance.”
RDFNL grand final day – football Romsey Park, Saturday Seniors, 2.30pm: Diggers Rest v Riddell Reserves, noon: Diggers Rest v Sunbury Kangaroos Under-18.5s, 9.30am: Rupertswood v Woodend-Hesket The Bombers last played in a grand final in 2013. On that occasion, they defeated the Burras by seven points. That match was the first of three successive grand final losses for Diggers Rest – and on that day, Elliott was coaching the Burras. About a third of the Bombers’ side from that grand final will play in this year’s grand final. Unfortunately, Jason Allen won’t be one of them after breaking a bone in one of his hands against Broadford. Elliott said his absence was an opportunity for someone to come in and make the most of their opportunity. As for the grand final, Elliott knows the Bombers will need to play well for four quarters to get the job done. “We’ve ran with them twice this year and have been ahead,” he said. “If we can play our best footy and get our heads right, we are a chance. “They will have some mental scars, but we have to get our young players right. Many are playing in their first finals series.” The Bombers reserves side won’t be in the grand final after losing its preliminary final to the Sunbury Kangaroos. The Kangaroos will be looking to go three premierships in a row. Woodend-Hesket ended Diggers Rest’s hopes of having all three sides in the grand final, coming from behind in the under-18.5s preliminary final. The Hawks, who were runners-up last year, kicked the last five goals of the game to win 11.11 (77) - 9.4 (58). They will face Rupertswood, which has won the past two premierships.

Lessons learnt, Lions roar back to make the grand final

Sunbury Lions put into practice lessons learnt from last week to win through to the Ballarat Football League grand final. The Lions performed poorly early against Bacchus Marsh in the second semi-final, and knew they couldn’t afford a slow start two weeks in a row. After trailing five goals to one early on against Lake Wendouree on Saturday, the Lions corrected their game, took control and then, finally, took the lead. They hit the front late in the second quarter, then repelled every challenge to hold that lead to take a solid 14.21 (105)–9.14 (68) win. For Lions’ coach Rick Horwood, the win and grand final berth were rewards for players who have held strong the past couple of years. “I’m rapt for the players and the supporters,” Horwood said. “We stuck with young kids, and were smashed in two elimination finals … we’ve now added some extra talent – it’s coming together.” Horwood said despite trailing early, he knew the game wasn’t like the previous week. “The players went to school during the week and learnt something. It was really pleasing they learnt from the week before. “They kicked the first three goals, but we weren’t out of it. “It wasn’t like the week before; this time we got our hands on the ball. It was a totally

Mistakes cost us goals, but we were up with it.” He said the leadership group had stepped up. “You need everyone to contribute in finals, and we had a really good contribution,” he said. “[Mathew] Medcraft was outstanding, while [Grant] Valles, [Joe] Redfern and [Adam] Short were standouts in the back half. “Nathan Wood was good on the wing and Tom Donoghue has put together a couple of good finals games. “[Alik] Magin wasn’t in our best five, but he was good. He had 19 tackles and played a really good team game.”
Medcraft was the best of the goalkickers, kicking four, including three in the second quarter. Horwood said players will have to hold onto lessons learnt in the upcoming grand final against Bacchus Marsh. The Cobras’ early onslaught won them their semi-finals’ clash. “It’s very nice to get to the big dance … you can’t win if you’re not there,” Horwood said. “We’re a 50-50 chance, but we’re under no illusions that we’ve got a big hill to climb and that they’re favourites. “If we can get off to a better start and then play how we did in the second and third quarters [against the Cobras], you never know.” The Lions will have a few selection headaches going into the grand final. Jack Sullivan will have to overcome an ankle injury which he suffered late in the preliminary final. Dwain Sanderson was a late withdrawal from the preliminary final after a work accident on Friday. He was replaced by Josh Guthrie. Four players from the Lions’ last premiership team, Medcraft, Sullivan, Greg Hay and Adam Short, barring injury, will play on Saturday. An injured James Rizk will miss the grand final. The Lions’ reserves team is out of the finals, after losing a preliminary final to East Point. Tara Murray
MOTOR Back in black, Maloo returns By Mark Short
road and track, and give the driver every bit of confidence with great pedal feel.
What is it? The ‘Black edition’ Maloo is a limited edition model that sees the return of the R8 badge, along with the unique SV Black features.
Does it like corners? The Maloo is more like a two-door sports car that has the bonus of being a ute, which means it is no slouch through the bends. The ride is sporty, yet comfortable, there is a decent amount of grip (even unladen) and it handles twisty roads with absolute confidence. Be warned, though, this is a heavyweight fighter; treat the power and weight with respect.
Why are we driving it? This is the first time HSV has offered a limited edition SV Black range since the 2011 E Series 3 based model. And it is also the first time the LS3 engine has been available in the GEN-F2 ‘R8’ range.
What’s different about it? The SV Black features include Satin Black 20-inch alloy wheels, black AP Racing forged four-piston brake calipers, black door surrounds and lower door accenting, shadow-chrome exhaust tips and distinctive black badging along with black fender vents and mirror scalps. The interior misses out on HSV’s seats (instead it’s fitted with those found in Holden’s SS-V Redline model, but still has HSV embroidery), but has unique side sills with numbered plaques. Does it go? It’s a V8-powered ute, so that’s like asking is the Pope a catholic. However, it does
What about service stations? Fuel consumption … well, with a claimed average of 12.6L/100kms, which is more like high teens in the real world, you’ll be visiting them often enough.
HSV MALOO SV BLACK EDITION The price:
$62,990 (plus on-road costs)

have 60kW and 101Nm less than its big brother, the supercharged LSA variant. Either way, the SV Black is still powerful enough to keep a smile on your face, and it arguably feels a better balanced package. Will it get me noticed? Yep, the Maloo has always stood out as more than your average workhorse ute and the subtle differences with the SV Black will have the train spotters pointing your way.

What colours does it come in? The Black Edition is available in five colours – phantom (black), heron (white), nitrate (silver), sting (red) and jungle green.
How’s the cabin ambience? It’s a nice place to be, with plenty of room and storage spaces (for a two-seater ute) and good quality materials throughout. The 8-inch colour display has plenty of functions and is easy to navigate. Does it stop? Definitely; the black AP Racing forged four-piston brake callipers and 367mm front and rear rotors do an excellent job, both on the
Would you buy one? Yeah, if you’ve had your eye on a Maloo but don’t want to fork out the extra coin for the LSA variant, go for it. But get your skates on, as this Black Edition is limited to 100 units so it well might be rare. What else should I consider? You should have a look at Holden’s SS-V Redline, priced from $50,990 it has the same LS3 engine (although down on power) big Brembo brakes and is nipping at the heels of the Maloo in all areas. There’s also Ford’s Falcon XR6 Turbo, the big Aussie six packs a mighty punch and although not as good in the chassis department it’s still a good gadget. – Drive/The Age
