Burras’ taste sweet victory

It took until extra time, but Diggers Rest finally ended three years of heartache, winning the Riddell District Football League premiership on Sunday. With scores level at the final siren, the Burras kicked two goals in extra time to beat Riddell, 12.14 (86)-12.8 (80). ■ More stories: Page 35

Emergency hub re-opens By Esther Lauaki Mt Macedon will again be a hub for emergency services training when a remodelled Victorian Emergency Management Institute opens its doors. Emergency services minister James Merlino toured the institute site on Saturday – the home of the former Australian Emergency Management Institute, which was closed by the Abbott government in 2014 despite calls to keep it open, and a backlash over job losses.

The training centre is set on 2.6 hectares and includes accommodation and training facilities for about 60 people, a large theatre with tiered seating, and a simulation centre. The site will be reborn as Victoria’s emergency management training centre with an overhaul of the accommodation facilities, the installation of new technology, and specific safety upgrades. Mr Merlino said the decision to close the national training facility at Mount Macedon had hit the community hard.

“We’re providing a safe, state-of-the-art training facility for our emergency services staff and volunteers. “We’re proud to step in and take over the site, to boost local jobs and the economy.” He said the new institute will also fill the gap left by the closure of the contaminated Fiskville CFA training campus. The state government permanently closed the Fiskville site last year following the detection of cancer-causing chemicals that put firefighters’ health, and lives, at risk.

Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the move to reopen the institute was a “big win for the Mount Macedon community”. “Emergency services training is back where it belongs – on Mount Macedon.” “It will build leadership capabilities across our emergency services, driving change and encouraging diversity in the sector, through education and training,” Ms Thomas said. Work on the upgrades will start this year, with emergency management training due to start early next year.

Sunbury murder victim feared for her safety: court A woman accused of murdering a neighbour amid a long-running dispute over car parking in their street has pleaded not guilty due to mental impairment. Police allege Eva Whitecross murdered Rachel Tyquin in their Sunbury street when she attacked her with a knife. The two crossed paths about 5.55am on April 16 after both women had been out on separate walks. Ms Tyquin, 44, was found on the footpath several doors from her home about 7.15am. She had suffered 16 stab wounds to her chest and neck. Whitecross, 54, who lived over the road from Ms Tyquin, appeared via video link before

Melbourne Magistrates Court on Tuesday, and entered a plea of not guilty. Defence counsel Paul Galbally told the court his client would contest the charge because of mental impairment. About 20 minutes after the alleged attack, police say Whitecross sent her husband a text message saying: “You better come home right now.” She later handed herself into police. Documents released by the court on Tuesday say Ms Tyquin was a fitness instructor, who from 2007 ran a personal trainer business from her home, and that clients would park their cars in the street, which agitated her neighbour. Police say that Whitecross once asked Ms

Tyquin if her clients could park outside the personal trainer’s home, but that Ms Tyquin laughed at her and walked away. A prosecution summary alleges, fromt hat point Whitecross became more aggressive and began trying to intimidate Ms Tyquin by staring at her, regularly calling her derogatory names and mowed the grass next to clients’ cars, which flicked clippings and stones onto them. By 2010, Ms Tyquin began fearing for her safety, police say, and in 2012 she took out an intervention order. Police allege Whitecross resumed abusing her neighbour once the intervention order expired. The court heard that Whitecross told police

in an interview that, on the morning of April 16, Ms Tyquin approached and struck her. “She stepped towards me and then I felt her hand on my face. I didn’t think it was a fist, it was a hand and I reacted very badly,” she said. She told investigators she fell on top of Ms Tyquin and put her hand in her bag, where she found the knife. She said she carried the knife in case other dogs attacked her own dogs. Whitecross was remanded in custody to appear before the Supreme Court on Thursday for a directions hearing. The case was adjourned. She will reappear before the court on December 9. – The Age

Man accused of child sex assaults

(Shawn Smits)

Detectives have arrested an 82-year-old man accused of assaulting a dozen teenagers at Hobart childrens’ homes in the 1970s and ’80s. The man, who was arrested in Sunbury on Thursday, was a former senior employee of the Kennerley Children’s Home in Hobart. Kennerley Boys’ Home was established in 1869 for boys who had been dislocated from their families, providing them with trade training and life skills while under care. The inclusion of girls from 1969 meant that brothers and sisters could be kept together. The man is facing charges that relate to 12 complainants, all of whom were young teenagers at the time. The offences were allegedly committed at four homes belonging to Kennerley Children’s Home in the Hobart suburbs of Claremont and Chigwell. The charges follow years of investigation by the Glenorchy Criminal Investigation Branch. The charges included seven counts of maintaining a sexual relationship, two counts of committing an indecent act directed at a young person and one count of sexual intercourse with a young person under the age of 17. The man was also charged with 10 counts of indecent assault. He will face the Hobart Magistrates Court on December 9.

GRANT CARRINGTON

Permit row leaves a sting By Esther Lauaki Two Malmsbury beekeepers are packing up their hives and leaving town because of a long running dispute with Macedon Ranges council. Malmsbury Honey business partners Grant Carrington and Michael Richards were knocked back from building a home on their two-hectare farm about 18 months ago because their farm-zoned land wasn’t big enough to warrant a dwelling. But the pair have had enough after councillors last month approved three permits to build on smaller farm-zoned blocks, some as small as 3.4 hectares, in Kyneton and Malmsbury.

“It’s quite disappointing that a farm nearby our farm has been granted a permit to build a dwelling when we have already been denied the same,” Mr Carrington said. “We are at a loss about what else to do.” The pair purchased the Malmsbury farm 17 years ago with hopes of running a home business producing organic, cold-pressed honey. They currently have about 15 hives in operation. Mr Carrington said their application for a dwelling was knocked back before it was even considered at a council meeting. He said council officers rejected the application because under council planning

regulations farm-zoned land must be a minimum of 40-hectares to justify a dwelling being built. At the time council officers also cited concerns about future expansion of the argi-business to operate up to 200 hives. The continued fragmentation of farmland for country lifestyle blocks has been a contentious issue in Macedon Ranges. At a recent council meeting West ward councillor Jennifer Anderson was a sole voice sounding the alarm about council’s contradictory approach in farming zones. Mr Carrington and Mr Richards are now preparing to put their property on the market.

Crafty ways into zone Sunbury craft folk have had their work cut out for them preparing for the upcoming CraftZone Expo and community connection day. The Sunbury Craft Group is gearing up for its free expo this Thursday at Goonawarra Neighbourhood House, which is hoped will attract new members. Organiser and long-time craft group member Fi Corboy said the expo will offer up plenty for anyone looking for something “a little different”. “The expo will feature CraftZone stalls with items not normally available for purchase in Sunbury,” Ms Corboy says. “The main focus will be on scrapbooking, die-cuts and card-making kits, at greatly reduced prices.”

She says the group will also be holding a food drive for the local food bank. “We thought it would be a great opportunity to also support a local community organisation, such as SunRanges CareWorks, by encouraging patrons to bring with them some pantry items of canned or dry goods, in readiness for families during school holidays,” Ms Corboy says. Non-perishable food items most needed include large cans of tuna, canned corn, rice, peanut butter, Vegemite, coffee, Milo and sugar. The CraftZone Expo runs from noon until 3pm this Thursday. The craft group meets every Wednesday at Goonawarra Neighbourhood House 11am-1pm. Details: 0413 222 285 Esther Lauaki

Lancefield calls for straw men

(Joe Mastroianni)

Sunbury’s sports community is thrilled upgrades to their home grounds at John McMahon Reserve are on track to go ahead. Hume council last week endorsed the masterplan for the reserve in response to calls from clubs and community groups for it to be upgraded, part of $8 million of works in the region. Draft plans for John McMahon Reserve, as well as Craigieburn’s DS Aitken Reserve and Westmeadows’ Willowbrook Reserve, will be open for public feedback from October 25. As part of the plan, East Sunbury’s John McMahon Reserve will get a second oval, netball courts, a playground and change rooms, as well as extended club rooms, at a cost of more than $3.9 million. The reserve is home to East Sunbury football, netball, cricket and softball clubs. “Exciting times ahead for the East Sunbury Sporting Community,” East Sunbury Cricket Club said in an online statement. “We hope the updated report will be adopted by council and then we will petition them over the following years to get everything on the plan done. “The future is ours Thunders!!” Cr Jack Ogilvie said the upgrades had been almost 15 years in the planning. “This has been one of my pet projects since 2002,” he said. “In the future, [the reserve] is going to be a lot better. This plan will take the reserve to a new level.” He is certain the upgrade will mean women’s football will be played at East Sunbury in the coming years. The plans will be out for public feedback until November 21. Details: www.hume.vic.gov.au

There will be some quirky characters popping up in coming weeks in the lead-up to the Lancefield Agricultural Show. Families are being encouraged to get creative in the town’s first scarecrow contest as part of the October 16 show. The Lancefield Agricultural Show will highlight the region’s best producers of food, wine and livestock as well as offering entertainment for the whole family. Contest organiser Cassandra Browne says she’s excited to see what locals can rustle up for their scarecrow entries and will also be calling on businesses to join in the fun. “We’d love to see as many businesses, schools and homes as possible get involved in creating and displaying a scarecrow to promote the show and to keep us all entertained over the school holidays,” Ms Browne said. “We want people to get creative and start decorating their little straw person for display outside their home or business. “How about a yoga scarecrow on High Street? Or a Dr Crow out the front of Country Practice?” Prizes are on offer for the best school or youth entry and best general entry. Entries are now being accepted, with forms available at lancefieldshow.org.au/ entries/ JAMES

Major upgrades to recycled water plants at Sunbury, Melton and the Macedon Ranges are in the pipeline. Planning minister Richard Wynne last week launched Western Water’s corporate plan, which outlines $22 million in works around its region. Major projects include the Sunbury recycled water plant upgrade, as well as upgrades to the Gisborne and Melton recycled water plants. Works at the Sunbury plant will cut energy consumption while the greening of the Gisborne plant has already started. The corporate plan addresses the challenges of climate change and a growing population in Western Water’s region, which has 63,500 customers. Mr Wynne said the plan focuses on ensuring water management is incorporated into the planning of new communities, with councils, developers and planning authorities working together on projects. “To cater for expected population growth and to ensure high-quality, safe and reliable sewer and water services across the region, Western Water is planning to invest almost $80 million in capital works projects,” Mr Wynne said. A community engagement reference group has also been appointed, and residents are urged to have their say on what’s most important to them about their local water and sewer services. Kyneton was drenched with more than 100 millimetres of rain as burst river banks caused flooding across the Macedon Ranges during last week’s wild weather. Torrential downpours hit the region from Monday afternoon, causing problems for motorists throughout the week. Roads closures were put in place at Baynton Road in Lancefield, Joyce Road in Chintin and Croziers Road, in Cobaw. A fallen tree on Burke and Wills Track near Lancefield also blocked traffic. In the 31 hours to 4pm on Tuesday, Bullengarook experienced 54 millimetres of rain, with Kyneton (51mm), Ashbourne (44mm), Lancefield (42mm) and Mount Macedon (38.4mm) also heavily hit. Nearby Sunbury had 30 millimetres of rain over the same period. The Campaspe River burst its banks as emergency services and meteorologists urged people to stay clear of floodwaters. Motorists were cautioned to drive safely on the wet roads and avoid potholes. “Many roads in the Macedon Ranges have been damaged, with pot holes the main issue,” the Macedon Ranges Weather Facebook page stated. “Stay extra alert while driving over the next few days. Reports also showed that Lake Eppalock increased its capacity by 20 per cent to 71.5 per cent in just 24 hours.” The Malmsbury and Coliban reservoirs overflowed and Deep Creek, which runs through Lancefield and Darraweit Guim and meets Jacksons Creek, inundated nearby properties. By the time the low-pressure system moved on by Thursday, Kyneton had received 102.6

Council veteran calls it a day By Esther Lauaki “Everything must come to an end – and this is my end.” These were the sentiments of Jacksons Creek ward councillor Jack Ogilvie when last week he announced he was stepping step down from Hume council. Cr Ogilvie is departing after 26 years as a councillor, having served on the Bulla council when he was first elected in 1999 before the formation of Hume council. He served as mayor twice in that time. Cr Ogilvie thanked the Sunbury community

for its ongoing support, adding that he had enjoyed his time as a councillor. “The Sunbury community always gave me support,” he said. “I am extremely blessed to have served with so many excellent councillors.” The local government veteran was paralysed on his left side after he had a stroke last July, but returned to the council in October to continue representing the community he loves. He was organising a community event when the stroke happened. Doctors said at the time they were amazed by the initial recovery of Cr Ogilvie, who many

The community kitchen team at the Sunbury Neighbourhood House is inviting local residents to a Pay it Forward three-course buffet dinner on September 26 to celebrate its third birthday. Proceeds will help pay for 10 dinners for the struggling residents who dine regularly at the Sunbury kitchen. Organiser Marianne Williams says the dinner will give the public an opportunity to experience what the kitchen is all about. “We started with six volunteers and four guests,” Ms Williams says. “Three years later, we’ve become an incorporated charity organisation, with 60

registered volunteers serving about 170 guests every Monday evening.” The kitchen provides nutritional hot meals to its guests, who otherwise may have to go without, she says. “Many of the volunteers are just residents of Sunbury who want to help others. We have over 50 volunteers who cook, wash dishes, set tables, and transport residents to and from their homes. Some just come to have a chat.” Diners are being asked to contribute a minimum $40 donation on the night or by direct debit. The Boss back to Rock Legendary singer Bruce Springsteen might sing about being Born in the USA, but he clearly has a special bond with the Macedon Ranges. The Boss will return to Hanging Rock with the E Street Band on February 11 next year as part of their Summer ’17 tour of Australia and New Zealand. Springsteen wowed 34,000 adoring fans during two sell-out concerts at the iconic Rock in March 2013, and is the only act to have performed back-to-back concerts there. Macedon mayor Graham Hackett said it was testament to how special Hanging Rock is as a venue that the singer would choose to return to the Macedon Ranges. “Bruce’s concerts last time were incredible,” Cr Hackett said. “He definitely provided value for money,

Big sister offers hope By Esther Lauaki Tamara Collins and her pet bulldog, Barry, are on a mission to help young people. As part of her campaign, the Macedon resident wants to raise $15,000 to send a young person struggling with mental health issues to a health retreat on the Sunshine Coast. Ms Collins’s quest is in honour of her little brother Dane, 28, who died last year after battling anxiety and depression. Barry, who was Dane’s pooch, is the face of Ms Collins’ online GoFundme crowdfunding campaign, which has raised more than $6000 for the cause. “Dane suffered terrible anxiety and depression and turned to drugs and alcohol in an attempt to get control of his life,” Ms Collins said. “When he realised this lifestyle was not helping him, he booked into the Health Retreat, a recovery center on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland.” Her next fundraising event is a world record attempt for the most people participating in a 45-minute Metafit session. It will be held on Sunday, October 9, at the Stadium in Gisborne and will be followed by a gold-coin donation breakfast. “I want to raise awareness of not only mental health but addiction and other manipulating factors that young people often face but have no strategies to overcome,” Ms Collins said. “Money can’t buy you happiness but it sure can buy you the key to the door … once the door is open, anything is possible. “To give someone opportunity and hope – that’s what this is all about.” Donate at www.gofundme.com/ thehappinesstree or book for the Metafit session at www.trybooking.com/NBOL.

Violence drives staffing move Rioting at Victoria’s juvenile detention centres has prompted calls for a state government inquiry into the youth justice system. Families and Children Minister Jenny Mikakos announced last week extra staff would be allocated after a series of violent incidents. A disturbance earlier this month at the Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre led to terrified staff barricading themselves inside an office as armed teenage inmates rioted. The violence reportedly left smashed windows, damaged doors and broken locks. Community and Public Sector Union spokesman Julian Kennelly called management of the incident “a debacle”. “This needs a full inquiry,” he said. “The gangs are running the place.” He said the youth justice system was in crisis, with staff and vulnerable inmates being put in dangerous situations. A recent WorkSafe report found violent incidents against staff at Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre were running at more than one a day and that staff members’ lives would be at risk unless staffing levels were increased. Ms Mikakos said workers would also be brought in at the Melbourne Youth Justice Centre in Parkville. A Victoria Police spokesman said police had been notified of an incident at Parkville in which a number of inmates had damaged property. Esther Lauaki

11 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 20, 2016

NEWS STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

MY PLACE Christine Pruneau is passionate about people power. The secretary of the Macedon Ranges Residents’ Association spoke to Esther Lauaki about what drives her. What’s your connection to the Macedon Ranges?

What makes you want to help the community?

I’ve lived in Woodend nearly 30 years. My husband’s an American and we lived there for five years. Woodend was heaven after Detroit. Woodend’s weather was beautiful. We’d brought a snow shovel back with us as a souvenir and were surprised at the prospect that we’d never have to use it.

It’s about people. I once said to a parliamentary inquiry that I wished I had a dollar for every time I bumped into or sat on the phone with someone who was upset about how they were being treated. There’s so much around us that disempowers people. I try to explain to people what their rights and responsibilities are. What government and councils, in particular do, can be so disempowering. It’s the ultimate frustration when you can’t think of anything you can do to stop something from happening.

I joined the Macedon Range Residents’ Association as a response to what happened to the Malmsbury juvenile detention centre in the ’90s. There were moves to offer this place up as a site for a new juvenile justice centre. Hundreds of people were turning up to meetings to protest and you just got a glimpse into processes that weren’t good, and people power could do something about it. Not long after we arrived in Woodend, the Woodend bypass debate started in the community. My husband and I got involved with the Campaspe Action Group and were very active at the time. It was a huge project that caused a lot of division. That was the introduction to a lot of things. What do you do outside of your community work? Whatever I get time for. We have a remnant of a garden left that I work on.

What’s your Woodend?

favourite

thing

about

There’s so many dags who live here. It’s fun to live in this community. You never know who you’ll be talking to. It’s all very grassroots. It’s a joy to live here because this place de-stresses you. There’s a beauty and a really strong sense of place that people have. Which is why even small things can have a big impact. If there were anything you could change, what would it be? I’d give the power back to the people. We’re living our democracy through this corporatisation approach, and it’s excluding people from decisions that should be theirs to make.

There are two obvious dishes by which it is possible to gauge a pub’s grub – a good steak and a great parma. So it’s unsurprising that Royal Hotel Sunbury’s experienced manager Kade Brennan is proud of their versions of these defining faves. “It’s no ordinary steak,” says Kade. “It comes from Aussie paddocks, aged to our specifications and grain-fed for 100 days, so it’s full of flavour and comes with a supplier guarantee of tenderness. “In fact, something I really appreciate about the Royal is its commitment to fresh (never frozen) Australian produce. Our chicken comes from cagefree farms and is hormone and antibiotic-free; the pork is sow stall-free, and fresh seafood comes from sustainable fish stocks.” Chef Kerry Bragagnolo says the menu is moving into more summery dishes but will still offer the popular all-season chicken scaloppine, which comes with a mushroom cream sauce, along with other dishes that have stood the test of time. “I am so excited to be releasing the new spring/summer menu in the next few weeks, which will include light spring dishes, fresh summer selections and new desserts,” says Kerry. “Our fish of the day is always popular (barramundi pictured), and the classic caesar salad is a summertime winner, made more substantial with the addition of chicken, to go with cos lettuce, crispy bacon,

croutons, parmesan and a poached egg. Another is the crispy-skin salmon on garlic mash with chargrilled capsicum, broccolini and balsamic glaze – recommended with a glass of South Island sav blanc, of course.” It’s no wonder diners continue to return with so many specials on offer. “On Fridays for dinner you can get any two mains for $30,” Kade says. “Saturday is Steak Day for both lunch and dinner and on Parma Monday Night you can get a parma for dinner for $12 … Monty’s Loyalty Reward Card holders get a five per cent discount on meals and drinks.” The Royal isn’t just known for its bistro, though. The hotel always has heaps of giveaways up for grabs as part of the ALH Group. “In September there’s the chance to win a trip for two to Thailand,” Kade says. “In October, there’s an even bigger statewide promotion and the prize is a his-and-her RAV4. Then in November/December, a cash prize of $75,000 will be up for grabs. “Last month, we had a lucky winner score a cash prize of $50,000 and every Saturday from noon-3pm we run meat raffles.” Royal Hotel Sunbury, 63 Evans Street, Sunbury. SPORT Burras survive Bombers pressure test It was the cruellest of endings for Riddell in the Riddell District Football League grand final. Clearly the underdogs coming in, the Bombers took it right up to a Diggers Rest side wanting to end a run of three straight grand final losses. The Bombers tested the Burras, and pushed them to somewhere they hadn’t been before, extra time in a grand final after scores were level at the final siren. Cameron Casson, who was the Bombers best, kicked the opening goal of extra time to put the Bombers in front, but they couldn’t hold on, going down 12.14 (86)–12.8 (80). The Bombers made the most of opportunities early in the game, while the Burras struggled to convert. No more than nine points separated the two teams in the first half. The Bombers started the second half a man

down after ruckman Brayden Allen was given a yellow card late in the first half. Despite being depleted, the Bombers held strong and, once back to a full complement of players, opened up a match-high 13-point lead. It was then the Burras turn to be a man down with Mick Kilty sent from the ground. However, when he returned Kilty proved to be a match winner, kicking two goals to level the scores in the dying moments of the game. The Bombers fought bravely in extra time, but ran out of legs. Bombers’ coach Jamie Elliott said he couldn’t be more proud of how players fought out the match. “To come a tie and end the way it did … to come back after extra time, I thought we were out of tickets,” he said. “But I was hoping, when the whips were cracking, we would get our nose in front. It

just didn’t happen and a couple of their better players bobbed up. “Once again, it was the dangerous players who got into good positions on the ground, and kept going – it was the same as the Broadford and Macedon matches. “They recruited at higher end, and we had the young kids, who cracked in and had a go.” Elliott said the signs are good for the future. “We played the kids and got them through – developing is the way to go and we now have to keep developing other players and find a way.” Tara Murray

Diggers Rest’s Shane Marchewka and Riddells’ Brayden Allen contest the ball. (Shawn Smits)

Cobras strike down Lions’ dream By Tara Murray Sunbury Lions’ premiership dream turned into a nightmare in the second half of the Ballarat Football League grand final against Bacchus Marsh. Hoping to reverse the result of the semi-final between the two, the Lions proved no match for a Cobras side hungry for a first ever BFL premiership. After an even first quarter, the Cobras kicked the first five goals of the second quarter to get a break on the Lions. While the Lions kicked the last two of the second quarter, they needed a miracle in the second half. And there was none. Both sides were wasteful in front of goal in the third quarter, with a late Cobras’ goal through Cameron Richardson the only major of the term. Cobras’ early dominance in the last quarter was rewarded with three goals in the first 10 minutes, which sealed their premiership. The Lions remained without a second half goal, losing the match 13.21 (99)–5.14 (44).

‘‘

You really need everything to go your way on - Rick Horwood a grand final

’’

The Lions found themselves on the back foot even before the siren sounded after the late exclusion of ruckman David Kovacevic. Kovacevic, who was named in the BFL team of the year during the week, had surgery after suffering a finger injury in the Lions’ elimination final win against Darley. On the field, the Lions were the walking wounded with Jack Landt and Nathan Wood both receiving treatment. They returned to the field, but neither had their normal impact. Jesse McInneny did a lot of the ruck work early, with late inclusion Trent Stead pinch-hitting. Adam Short moved from defence to ruck in the third quarter and battled manfully against Daniel Burton. Burton was named best on ground by the umpires. “Kova did his finger in the second quarter against Darley, and it was a big effort to keep playing,” Lions’ coach Rick Horwood said. “It ended up catching up with him. It’s pretty hard when we had him all year – their ruckman got best on ground, so it’s pretty telling. “I thought we battled hard … I thought we got beaten in the midfield; that’s probably one of the reasons.”

Above: Sunbury Lions ponder what may have been. Below: Bacchus Marsh’s Hamish Coulton makes life hard for Sunbury Lions’ Greg Hay. (Pictures: Shawn Smits)

Horwood said while he was hopeful of a second-half comeback, the Lions never recovered after the Cobras kicked three goals in seven minutes to open up the second half. “I was still hopeful at half-time, but the signs were there. “They were spreading well, and we just weren’t covering the spread, and the amount of entries going in their inside 50 was just too much pressure for the backs. “In the end, they were too good on the day, and were better than us all year. We played them three times and they beat us three times. “You really need everything to go your way on a grand final, but that’s no excuse. They were a better side. We’ll have to learn from it.” Tim Hill was named the best for the Lions, while Jesse Flannery, Grant Valles, Adam Short and Roger Allen fought hard. In a good sign for the Lions moving forward, Alik Magin and Kovacevic have recommitted. Magin has been a star for the Lions in his first

season, named in the BFL team of the year and finishing runner-up in the Henderson Medal. “The committee will do the review in a couple of weeks and hopefully the rest will sign on,” Horwood said. He said he would like to continue coaching next year, and despite the outcome, he is proud of how far the side has come in the past three years. “They are a really young group and all mates, with an average age of 22. We’ve been building for a few years and it’s a bit of a learning curve. “We’ve come a long way in three years.” The Lions’ netballers had a better day, with both the B-grade and C-grade sides winning premierships. The B-grade team won a third straight premiership, defeating Lake Wendouree 45-35. Tami Hardwick was best on court. In the C-grade, Sunbury defeated Ballarat 33-30. Megan Whittard was best on court. 35 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 20, 2016

SPORT STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

Scrappy Bombers get it done By Tara Murray It wasn’t Riddell’s best performance or cleanest game – but none of that mattered as the Bombers went back-to-back in A-grade Riddell District Netball League premierships. The Bombers, playing in their third straight grand final, were looking to make it two wins in two years over Macedon. For much of the first half, nothing separated the two teams. When the Cats looked like they were the better team, the Bombers were doing enough to keep the lead. That lead got out to as many as eight goals in the third quarter, but the Bombers let the Cats back into the game. The Cats on seven or eight occasions got the margin back to three goals in the last quarter. But they couldn’t get any closer. The end result was a 46-42 win to the Bombers. Bombers coach Jarrad Walker admitted he wasn’t happy with how the game played out – yet was delighted with the result. “We were better for 35 minutes and Macedon for the other 25 minutes of the game,” he said. “We were lucky enough to score enough goals in that 35 minutes when we were in control. “Our ball placement was terrible – we were passing into hands, passing short and not using speed or preliminary moves to get to the ball. We did enough to get across the line.” Walker said he knew that if his players kept playing the way they had in the first half, the Cats would keep coming. “We kept them in the game,” he said. “They did make same uncharacteristic errors as well and we capitalised. “There was a lot of colourful language on the bench … we were in control of the match and then let them have another free run.” Bec Colwell was the best of the shooters, shooting 27 goals at 75 per cent. Christine Harris started slowly before being benched in the second quarter, and then bounced back in the second half. She scored 18 goals for the game. “It’s really hard for goalers to perform in finals – just so much pressure,” Walker said. “Christine brings her best netball to finals. She found the movement we were after … that’s what Ellen [Close] showed when she was out there. Christine applied that with her shooting skills.” Carly Harrison was named best on court, with Danielle Wilson and Lauren Close providing strong support in defence. Walker paid tribute to midcourter Cayley Armstrong, who was the only player not to get on the court. “It’s her first season back from an ACL injury and she was fantastic throughout the season,” he said. “She was unlucky that our centre and wing attack were our consistent players today. There

wasn’t the option to make the move. Just sitting on the bench and being constantly supportive, is selfless.” Walker said he was unsure whether he would return for a second year as coach. “I don’t know,” he said. “I’m making a move for work. I would be happy to leave Riddell in the hands here of the likes of the Closes, Christine Harris … it has a strong back bone.” He said that even if he departed, the Bombers’ trajectory was already well mapped out. “The whole idea of being out at Riddell was to build the pathways between the A’s and under-19s,” he said. “Kira [Baldwin], Brianna [De Haas] and Meikah [Johns] are all testament to that, along with the other girls who played senior games this year. “We’re building a strong pathway at Riddell and hopefully it keeps going.” Rupertswood won the B-grade, C-grade and under-19 premierships, defeating Riddell in the first two and Macedon in the third. New-look Cats get the right combination

At the start of the Riddell District Netball League season, no one knew much about Macedon and its new-look team. Just one player from last season’s grand final side was part of the squad, as the Cats looked to start a new era. They quickly showed they would be finals contenders and, as the year progressed, a premiership contender. All through finals the Cats just wanted to play good netball and see where it took them. It was no different in Saturday’s A-grade grand final against Riddell. The Cats tested the Bombers and made them change their game plan. Even when they were eight goals down, the Cats didn’t give up, pushing the Bombers to play some of their best netball. While the Cats ultimately fell short, 46-42, it was a performance to be proud of. Cats’ playing coach Ciara Stewart said they would learn from the mistakes they made late

in the game, when the result was on the line. “If you think about it, they got it out to eight goals, and we brought it back again to four goals. “We turned the ball over two times on our centre pass in our goal ring in the last minute and a half, and that’s what we have to learn from. It could have been really up there.” The Cats looked at different combinations to try and put the Bombers off. These included changing the goal circle in the second half, if there was any sign of things not going right. “They had to move around all their players,” she said. “The three wing defences coming on [for us] were all strategy today. It wasn’t to combat what the wing attack was doing “We thought we would try Tara [Burnip] again in the third quarter, and if it wasn’t going to plan straight away, Jaz [Jarrad Walker] will put it to the girls and try something different – and that’s what they did. “Tara was missing a few goals. It wasn’t about

positioning today, it was about her goaling. We thought we would move to a fast goaling unit and it worked too.” Burnip was the best of the goalers for the Cats with 19 goals. Stewart said in the end there were two areas they just weren’t able to match it with the Bombers which proved the difference, the Bombers’ height, and shooter Bec Colwell. “They missed shots for us to get the ball enough down our end. “Unfortunately for us, Bec out-muscled with her height and size. We have to get better rebounding positions, and learn from that. Without her they wouldn’t have come close.” While slightly disappointed with the result, Stewart said signs for the future are encouraging after just one season together. “I’m positive all the girls will play again, if not 90 per cent of them. Hopefully strengthen the defence end and add to the midcourt.” Tara Murray

Premiership redemption for Diggers Rest reserves Diggers Rest players went into the Riddell District Football League reserves grand final against Sunbury Kangaroos seeking redemption – and they got it. After losing to the Kangaroos in last year’s grand final, the Burras were determined history would not repeat itself. The Burras kicked the first two goals of the match but the Kangaroos matched that and levelled the scores heading into quarter-time. From that point, it was all the Burras – they kicked the next seven goals to lead by 47 points at the main break. The Kangaroos kicked the first two goals of the second half, but that was it. The Burras snuffed out the Kangaroos’ hopes of a third straight reserves premiership. Having kept the Kangaroos goal-less in the second quarter, they did it again in the fourth quarter for a big 17.14 (116)-5.4 (34) win. Steven Freeth kicked four goals for the Burras, while Chris Lawton, Brad Sluggett and Brad Wilson were named the side’s best. Burras coach Antes Power, who came across to the club this year from Riddell, said that while the side had played in the grand final

last year, the players considered this year a fresh start. “They wanted something different and something fresh,” he said. “They were always going all the way – someone had to take it from them.” Power said the key was getting a match-winning margin early on to ensure the Kangaroos couldn’t come from behind a second straight year. “They’re a quality side and they have won two premierships,” he said. “We had to work really hard in that first quarter to break them. When we broke them, we controlled the game for most of the last three quarters. “I don’t think anyone really missed out … everyone got the medal [across the two grades]. “That’s what’s really good – that it’s a whole club thing and a great day for the Burras. “We’ll be strong for a few years … [there’s] a lot of young talent and a number of under-18.5s coming through next year.” Tara Murray

Burras break their drought By Tara Murray It seemed somewhat fitting that Diggers Rest’s premiership drought came to an end in dramatic circumstances. The Burras had lost the past three Riddell District Football League grand finals and been a perennial runner-up for a decade. The club’s only senior premiership was 1993 when the league still had two divisions and the Burras won division 2. Going into Sunday’s grand final, the Burras had as good a chance as any of their predecessors to make history. They were clearly the best side all year, but it counted for little as Riddell pushed them all the way. At the final siren, scores were level, meaning the game was going to extra time.

The Bombers’ Cameron Casson scored the only goal in the first five minutes of extra time to lead by seven points at the change of ends. Burras’ Brent Tuckey responded soon into the second period. The Burras needed a hero and they found him in Jason Williams. Williams got free in the forward 50 and kicked truly to put them five points in front. A final point sealed the 12.14 (86)-12.8 (80) result. Burras’ coach Shaun Sims, who earlier on Sunday had played in the Burras’ reserves premiership, was in shock after the game. “To win two premierships in the one day is very unlikely … it’s a really good thing for the club. “We played some good footy and some poor footy, but we hung in, fought back and ended up winning. “If you want to win a grand final … that’s one way to do it.” There were moments when the Burras thought they might fall short again. Early on, they couldn’t convert in front of goal, allowing the more accurate Bombers to stay in touch. “Riddell were fantastic,” Sims said. “We probably hurt ourselves with kicking at the start. It was seven shots to their six at quarter-time when we’d had the wind. We just couldn’t kick goals and put pressure on them. “That was the key, to put scoreboard pressure on, and we just never got it.” The Bombers looked the better team at three-quarter time. The Burras started a man down in the last quarter after Mick Kilty was

sent from the field following a scuffle but despite having 17 players for the 15-minute send-off, they held on, each team scoring a goal before Kilty returned to become the game saver. “Any sort of game when you go 15 minutes a player down, it’s extremely hard. Clubs are so

good at using the spare,” Sims said. “He came back on, kicked two goals and the rest will be history. He stood up when it counted. He did the wrong thing, but you forget that when you win.” Taylor Hine was awarded the Doug McIntyre

Medal as best on ground, while Cameron McCabe won the AFL Victoria Medal. Sims said while the recruitment of former AFL players Hine and Cale Morton had got a lot of publicity, it was the younger players’ development that had taken them to the next level. “People say we’ve gone on a recruiting spree, but we lost five players and brought in two. “Josh Wallace, BJ Kilty, Andrew Tyquin and Mark Freeth have all been in our system for three or four years now. Andrew was among the best players in the first two finals. That’s where our improvement has come. “Cale and Taylor came on top of that and played to their strengths.” Sims said the win wasn’t just for the players but the club itself. “We’re a club for netballers and footballers, and everyone I’ve spoken to feels like they’re part of it. This was a great way to go out. You could hear our crowd and the supporters. “Some of our guys have played in five losing grand finals. Now they get this, and most of that other stuff is forgotten. To our guys’ credit, they stuck with it. Everyone wants us to lose, but now we can enjoy being the best team in the RDFL for six months.” For more pictures of Sunday’s three football grand finals and a wrap of Rupertswood’s under-18.5 premiership, go to www.starweekly. com.au
