This hobby’s catching on The Sunbury Angling Club is casting a wide net in the hope its coming family day will lure new members. Committee member Greg Golding and son Matthew, who is club president, are encouraging fishing enthusiasts and their families to enjoy a day on the water at Spavin Lake, Sunbury, this Sunday. “It’s a great opportunity to get out with the family and catch some fish,” Greg says. “The kids can come and learn casting and rigging, and have a go at bait and lure fishing.” The free community event will include a juniors’ fishing clinic from 11am until 3pm. The lake has been stocked with trout, yellow belly, red fin and other fish varieties. Details: 0400 297 898 MILIKA, 7 (FRONT), WITH ANGLING CHUMS

Sunbury crime rate soars By Esther Lauaki Drug offences and breaches of court orders are behind a massive 77 per cent annual spike in Sunbury’s crime rate. Data released by the Crime Statistics Agency last Thursday reveals 3208 offences were recorded in the year to June 30 – up from 1807. The 260 drug offences in Sunbury represented a 150 per cent increase over the same year. Justice procedures, including breach of court orders, also soared: from 87 to 576 cases over the same period, a hike of more than 560 per cent. Deception-related offences climbed almost

230 per cent, from 62 to 202, while theft rose from 538 cases to 928 (72.5 per cent). Across Hume, the overall crime rate rose 18 per cent. The new figures come after the police union rejected calls earlier this year for Diggers Rest to be transferred from the Melton police service area into Sunbury’s. The union claimed it would put more pressure on Sunbury officers already dealing with soaring call-outs. Sunbury police station already closes on occasions due to a lack of staff, but officers can still be contacted via intercom and phone. Western Metropolitan MP Bernie Finn lashed out, saying the latest crime statistics

showed a failure by the government to maintain law and order. As well as Sunbury’s soaring crime rate, Diggers Rest, Bulla and Clarkefield also recorded increases. Mr Finn said “crime rates are up and police numbers are down”. “What that tells us, and it’s been happening with monotonous regularity, is that [Premier] Daniel Andrews continues to ignore the good people of our area,” he said. “The figures in the Sunbury electorate are alarming, particularly in my home town of Bulla, which recorded a staggering increase of 141 per cent. “How can we fight crime when we don’t have

the manpower necessary to do it? We now have a situation where drug dealing and trafficking, weapons and explosives offences, assault and related offences have all risen under Labor, not to mention home invasions and car-jackings. “It’s very clear that Daniel Andrews and his government have failed to maintain any form of law and order. Something must be done to protect our community.” Overall crime in the Macedon Ranges was up 12 per cent, from 2248 offences to 2512. Breaches of court orders rose 62 per cent, from 288 to 466; arson climbed from 28 to 37 cases; and drug trafficking and dealing also increased, from 33 to 51 offences.

Train-crush figures almost double By Esther Lauaki Passenger loading survey results from Public Transport Victoria have fuelled renewed calls for more trains on the Sunbury Metro line. The latest survey, which recorded the average passenger numbers on metropolitan train and tram services, found that 46 per cent of morning services on the Sunbury line in the year to May 2016 were overcrowded. Data for the corresponding 2014-15 year revealed that the same Sunbury morning services exceeding benchmark standards of

loading were at 43.2 per cent. Overcrowding on Metro and V/Line trains has been a contentious issue in Sunbury since electrification of the V/Line service in 2012 and the axing of some trains to the region last year. State Western Metropolitan MP Bernie Finn, a Bulla resident, said the only way the situation could be resolved was if the government “stops ignoring Sunbury”. “This is an issue that’s been around for a very long time and is not going away,” Mr Finn said. “This has not snuck up on anyone. It’s about time this government started spending some

money on the Sunbury line. We need more trains. The only thing they’ve done for Sunbury is take away train services.” A PTV spokesman said the survey findings helped pinpoint when and where passenger loads on Melbourne’s train lines and tram routes were at their highest. The information determined when and where extra capacity may be needed to reduce crowding. “The government is ordering 84 new trains, removing 50 dangerous and congested level crossings, installing smarter signalling and building the Metro tunnel, which will create

space for tens of thousands of extra passengers in peak hour,” he said. The spokesman said the projects would allow more trains to and from Sunbury and right across Melbourne, reducing waiting, crowding and delays. “PTV is working with the department and Metro to develop timetable changes that will help reduce overcrowding on trains at peak times,” he said. The government has ordered 65 new high-capacity trains for the new Sunbury to Cranbourne-Pakenham line created by the Metro tunnel.

Golden Hat’s silver lining

Looking for yard legends

A Sunbury teen chef has taken home the silverware at a national competition. Kimberly Tang, 19, was recently named one of Australia’s best young chefs winning three silver medals in the national final of the 2016 Nestlé Golden Chef’s Hat Award. Kimberly and teammate Bridget Bottcher, 21, battled it out in the kitchen against the country’s 10 best junior chef teams snatching up silver medals for their entrée, main and dessert course dishes. The duo’s award-winning menu included an entrée of beetroot cured ocean trout, prawn rillette, beetroot fluid gel, pickled yellow beetroot, Jerusalem artichoke chips and lace tuiles. They served up charcoal lamb, smoked lamb tartare, quintet of mushrooms, potato wafers, apricot jam, parsnip foam, beetroot and chocolate demi glaze for main. To finish, it was kaffir lime and coconut mousse with a beetroot reduction, green ginger sponge, kaffir lime curd and ginger nest. Kimberly, who is already an apprentice chef at No.8 Crown Melbourne, is no stranger to the competition having competed last year. “It’s next-level cooking in front of a live audience like this but I’m really proud of what I achieved. I improved on last year’s result at the regionals, so I’m definitely happy with that,” she said.

Sunbury and Macedon Ranges residents are being encouraged to roll up their sleeves and volunteer to be “backyard legends” for a day. Volunteers can register now for the Backyard Legend Day campaign, which starts on October 16, and nominate themselves to complete a chore in the house or yard for someone in their community. Backyard Legend Day ambassador Mike Whitney says the initiative “goes straight to the heart of Australia”. “Backyard Legend Day is all about the Australian community spirit. It’s in our nature to rally behind anyone who genuinely needs a helping hand and, what might seem like a small thing to us, can be a huge support to someone else.” Volunteering Australia chief executive Brett Williamson says volunteering is a key indicator of healthy communities. “We are seeing a shift away from formal volunteering through organisations because we are increasingly time-poor. Despite this drop in overall numbers, Australians are still very much a charitable bunch who want to support their communities.” The search is also on for Australia’s Backyard Legend – someone who has gone above and beyond to help out a neighbour or someone in their community. “If you know somebody who has helped out in the community in this fashion, this is a great opportunity to say thanks,” Mr Williams says. There’s $10,000 of prizes to be won. More: www.backyardlegendday.com.au

Exhibition aims to inspire Artists and contributors to the upcoming Inspirational Minds exhibition hope their work will “uplift” those who visit. The exhibition, at Kyneton Town Hall from October 11 to 13, is a collection of works created by artists living with mental illness. Artists used paints, mandalas, poetry and quotes and yarn crafts to express what inspires them for the exhibition, which is part of Mental Health Week. Community mental health worker Natasha Cleary says the exhibition is a culmination of

Funding promotes green growth By Esther Lauaki Interest free loans on renewable energy systems are helping to get Macedon Ranges residents living greener. The new funding initiative, by the Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group, will be one of the main talking points of the group’s upcoming annual meeting in Woodend on October 11. Group president Ralf Thesing encourages residents to attend and learn how they can

help to transform the Macedon Ranges into a model sustainable community. Mr Thesing says he hopes the initiative will assist people in building more sustainable homes.

“We have created the Macedon Ranges Renewable Energy Fund,” Mr Thesing says. “It gives community groups zero interest loans to install renewable energy systems on their buildings. It’s a revolving fund, where repayments are made from savings on the recipient’s electricity bills, and that money is then loaned to another group.” On the night, professor Kate Auty will present a talk titled “Many People Make Change” reflecting on climate change, biodiversity,

community energy and communications. Professor Auty is the Australian Capital Territory sustainability commissioner having served in the same position in Victoria. She is also the Melbourne Sustainable Society Institute advisory board chair. Professor Auty will speak from 6.30pm to 8pm at the Woodend Neighbourhood House with the sustainability group annual general meeting to follow. Information: 0409 160 762

Award for caring heart Children in Margaret Walla’s care are in good hands. The Woodend family day care educator was a regional winner in this year’s Excellence in Family Day Care Awards. Ms Walla, who is registered with Bambini Child Care Services, cares for about seven children up to nine-years old. She says she’s thrilled to have been counted among the best. “I’m a little bit shocked,” she says. “It’s just unreal. The kids are just gorgeous… I do it for my family and it’s what I love to do. I know the children are happy here and their families are happy as well. “I spend my days laughing and playing and out in the rain playing in puddles, so I have an easy life doing this work. Who, at 45, can say that they do this for a living?” Family Day Care Australia chief executive Andrew Paterson says educators such as Ms Walla hold a special place in the hearts of the families who nominated them.

“There is no greater responsibility than to be entrusted with the care and education of a young child, every nomination reflected the importance to parents of the safe, nurturing and educational environment that is family day care,” Mr Paterson says. “To be named regional winner is recognition of Margaret’s dedication to providing quality early childhood education, but also to the wonderful and unique relationship between educators like Margaret and the children in their care.” Ms Walla is now in the running for the Victorian title. National winners will be announced at a dinner in November. Winners will share in more than $20,000 of prizes including educational resources and training packages. Tick timebomb warning Dog owners in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges are being warned to protect their pets from paralysis ticks moving into the warmer months. Australia’s paralysis tick season runs from September to March. Veterinarian, Dr Katrina Warren (pictured), says paralysis tick cases are already being reported by clinics around the country with experts predicting a bad season ahead. Paralysis ticks cause weakness of the hindquarters to start and progresses to total paralysis or death. Dr Warren is appealing to all dog owners

to proactively talk to a local vet if their pets present similar symptoms. “Over the past 20 years I have seen many heart-breaking situations where people have lost their beloved dogs to tick paralysis or spent thousands of dollars in vet bills,” she says. “These ticks can be lethal and preventative treatment, coupled with daily searching for ticks on your dog, is absolutely essential.” Other early symptoms include the appearance that the dog has something stuck in its throat, vomiting or heavy, loud breathing. Call to man up to mental health By Esther Lauaki

Ten years on and still divine

Guys – it’s time to talk. Woodend-Hesket Masters Football Club is encouraging its players to round up their mates and bring them down to the clubrooms for a forum run by Beyondblue on October 19. Committee member Daron Jacks said the men’s forum will be to discuss anxiety and depression in men and focus on a holistic view of health. “It’s something as a club that we are very passionate about,” Mr Jacks said. “We’re really big on mental health here. As middle-aged guys we’re very conscious of keeping an eye on physical health as well as our mental health. “We approached Beyondblue and they’ve helped us put on this forum to encourage the guys to come and talk about anxiety and depression in an environment they’re used to.” Former North Melbourne and Hawthorn star Nathan Thompson will be the guest speaker, discussing his own battle with depression. Mr Jacks said Thompson was the first AFL footballer to openly discuss his battle with depression which opened the door to many more athletes admitting to struggling with mental health issues. “Having him there will be great because he started the ball rolling and said to his club, ‘I feel great physically but my mental health isn’t in great shape’. Other men are now coming forward and are not afraid to talk about depression and anxiety.” The forum will start off with an informal training session. The night will be held at the Hawks clubrooms at Gilbert Gordon Oval on October 19 at 7.30pm. Men aged over 35 are encouraged to attend and bring a mate along. Information: daron.a.jacks@gmail.com

The Divine Divas will be supported by a great line-up of guest artists.” The Divas will perform classic hits by Marcia Hines, Fleetwood Mac, Rod Stewart, Mandy Moore and others. The showcase will also include young pianists Hoang Pham and Ayesha Gough, harpist and vocalist Claire Patti and vocal groups Cantare and Sunbury Kidz. Sunbury farmer Amanda Woods is part of a new movement towards smarter farming and she wants to spread the word. That’s her aim as the new development officer of the Society of Precision Agriculture Australia. The non-profit group advocates ‘precision agriculture’, or ‘smart farming’, across Australia. Precision agriculture is a farming management method using technology like satellite navigation and GPS to observe, measure and respond to the variability in crops. Ms Woods, who describes herself as a tree changer, runs training courses at the Goonawarra Neighbourhood House on the science behind food. “I’m a scientist and I’ve been in Sunbury for about five years,” she said. “I’ve been using yeast bacteria and fungi to make food for some time and teaching people all about being self-sufficient.” Her passion for smart farming was borne of her love for the newest technology, which she uses on her own Emu Creek farm. “Farmers rave about their drones and their applications that they use to map yields,” she said. “There are so many different systems that you can use to measure everything from nitrogen levels in your soil, so that you plant in the best places, through to tracking tags on your animals so you can locate them easily using an app on your mobile phone. I’m looking forward

to sharing my ideas to increase the adoption of precision agriculture across Australia and internationally. “I’ll be working hard to showcase how technology informs better decision-making to save time and money, and working with those across the industry.” The society’s chief executive, Dr Nicole Dimos, said Ms Woods’ role was established to meet the demands of the industry. “We’re seeing tremendous growth in precision agriculture nationally and this opportunity requires our organisation to revisit its communication and extension strategy, from increasing our online presence to hosting more frequent webinars.”

MY PLACE Chris Humfrey spent his childhood “over the fence” searching for wildlife. The 40-year-old zoologist, the face of Wild Action Zoo, ventures out daily to educate others about animals. He spoke to Esther Lauaki.

I live here and I own and operate my own private zoo, nestled in the Macedon Ranges, called Wild Action Zoo. What made you want to become a zoologist? I’ve always had a burning passion for all things wild. I grew up with a childhood of chasing lizards, catching tadpoles and bird watching. In fact, I never ventured inside the family house – I was always outside over the fence searching for wildlife. I am now a member of a team of tertiary trained zoologists and teachers that ensure kids of all ages have a fun, educational and of course an unbeatable interactive wildlife experience at Wild Action Zoo. Tell me about the Wild Action Zoo. The collection consists of over 2000 native Australian animals including little penguin, koalas, quolls, snakes, wedge-tailed eagles, cassowaries and blue-ringed octopuses.

Every year myself and the Wild Action team successfully contribute valuable livestock to other Australian zoos by breeding the critically endangered tiger quoll – a close relative to the Tasmanian devil. What’s the best thing about your job? My environmental ethos simply is: “How can we save something if we don’t know anything about it? Creating empathy and awareness is the key to conservation”. Working with the kids and environmental education is my passion and it’s what led me to open a zoo that provided hands-on zookeeper training days for kids. Have you ever been in a dangerous situation in your work? My thirst for knowledge and keenness to observe wild creatures has led me to travel the world over, so there have been some situations that were a bit dangerous. Whether it was spotting leopards in Sri Lanka, rhinos in Nepal, pumas in Belize or death adders in the outback of Australia. Details: www.wildaction.com.au

India: land of chaos and colour A few expert tips will help you enjoy this challenging but magical country, writes Nina Karnikowski. India is everything, and more, all at once. It’s a visual explosion of bright saris, lumbering cows, marigolds and bursts of sunlight. And while Mother India, with her 1.2 billion inhabitants, can inspire, astonish and enlighten many who tread her soil, her innumerable challenges and chaotic madness can also overwhelm and exhaust unprepared first-timers. Or even put them off completely. After living in Mumbai and travelling throughout India for seven months last year here are my essential survival tips to ensure you don’t waste a second on your first visit to this magical country.

The basics

So how long for your first trip? A lifetime, if you’ve got one to spare. If not, a month would be ideal to make the most of each place you visit. At a stretch, you could get a taste of India’s magic in two weeks. Allocate two nights at least for each place you visit and, as always, the longer you stay in a city the more you’ll be able to cosy up to locals who can give you their hot insider tips. As for money, you’ll be dealing in Indian rupees - there are about 55 rupees to each Aussie dollar. Credit cards are widely accepted, but make sure you know all your pin codes as signing has been phased out around the country. And take advantage of the baggy clothes you’ll be wearing by using a money belt without worrying about any embarrassing bulges.

How to stay well

Don’t even think of drinking tap water – even if it’s filtered, nasties can get through and you

just don’t want to risk it. Avoid ice, eating fresh fruit juices and salads and street food, which can look tempting but usually isn’t worth it. Even if you’re fit and healthy, you’d be a fool to travel to India without comprehensive health insurance. Make sure your vaccinations are all up to date, pack a full medical kit (include Probiotics and Travelan, both good for healthy gut flora, plus some general antibiotics as prescribed by your GP), and do take a truckload of hand sanitiser to keep those mitts fresh.

How to stay safe

The numerous assaults on women in India recently have been well publicised, but by

taking a few precautions female travellers can definitely travel safely. Women-only rooms or floors are on offer in a few big Indian hotels including the ITC group of luxury hotels (itchotels.in), and the Indian tourism ministry has called for this to be standard across hotel categories. You’ll need to prepare for being stared at – more blankly than lecherously – but it’s best to avoid curious gazes since returning them can be considered flirtatious. Dress conservatively (loose ankle-length pants or skirts, tops that cover your shoulders and shawls), and avoid travelling alone during festivals when thick crowds can be used as an

excuse for a pinch or a grab.

How to get around

In big cities, it’s auto rickshaws and taxis all the way. If you’re getting a taxi from an airport to your hotel, organise it from the pre-paid counter inside most terminals, or risk being scammed. Trains are notoriously overcrowded and run down – they’re fine for short trips and economical, but not recommended for overnight travel since safety’s not at a premium. Ditto for overnight sleeper coaches. A great option is to hire a car and driver, particularly if you’re travelling within one state

for a few days. Indiabycaranddriver.com is a reputable company offering everything from old-school Ambassadors to SUVs and mini coaches.

Where to stay

When it comes to Indian accommodation, you can spend as little or as much as you like – from $2 to $2000 a night and beyond. Budget options are generally OK, but mid-range is where you get the best value for money, though you’ll find the luxurious five-star hotels of the Indian-owned Taj group (tajhotels.com) to be world class. - The Age

Medical centre growing well, just as a Vineyard should Sleek and shiny, the newly opened Vineyard Medical Centre offers patients state-of-the-art care, providing the community with exceptional facilities to maintain good health and wellbeing. Sally, the centre’s manager, says the group aims to provide optimal healthcare to Sunbury and surrounding communities. “Compared to our previous practice, Family Medical Centre, the Vineyard centre has the ability to expand on offered healthcare services in the area and increase awareness of the importance of getting regular health checks,” Sally explains. “We just want to help keep the community happy and healthy.” Vineyard Medical Centre (VMC) has gone from being a single-storey clinic to a comprehensive double-storey healthcare centre. Fitted with advanced technologies and ample space, it ensures patients receive excellent and efficient care. “Now accepting walk-ins, the centre can assist patients requiring immediate attention when there’re no appointments available,” Sally says. “Our 14 consulting rooms are on the ground floor; these are used by our GPs. Upstairs is dedicated to allied health, pathology and other specialists. “There are also two treatment rooms and an emergency-triage room with ambulance access. “We have a range of specialists and allied health professionals here, covering fields such as physiotherapy, cardiology, podiatry, orthopaedics, general surgery, and plastics, to name a few. There’s also pathology and a pharmacy onsite,” Sally adds. “Combined, our staff have more than 40 years’ experience and we foresee further growth, offering dental care.” Vineyard Medical Centre, 2-6 Sussex Court, Sunbury. The stone and timber façade and distinctive profile marks this one unique, and inside it’s the same story. Replete with mould-breaking architectural lines, the interior design employs timber flourishes, while crisp white wall paint, spotted gum floorboards and picture windows create a sophisticated look. Four large, grey-carpeted bedrooms include the main with a chic en suite and fitted dressing room behind a timber wall. The tiled main bathroom with freestanding tub is all class. There’s also a study. The living hub, with an extraordinary ceiling and wall treatment in timber, incorporates a kitchen with stone benches, induction cooktop, dual ovens and a great butler’s pantry. The tiled alfresco area is treated to textured natural timber as a backdrop to a stainless-steel outdoor kitchen, and gardens beyond on the block of about 803 square metres are well finished.

If a first-home buyer doesn’t snaffle this one up first, an investor surely will – it comes with plans and permits for a second dwelling at the rear, so all lights are green. On about 665 square metres, the house has three carpeted bedrooms, each with a built-in wardrobe, sharing a well-presented bathroom and separate toilet. A carpeted, L-shaped lounge-dining room is the first space after the front door, and this connects with the kitchen in an open-plan configuration. Timber-veneer cupboards, a pantry cupboard, wall oven and cooktop fit out the compact kitchen. A glass slider from the lounge room opens to a covered pergola that runs down the side, and the big, lawned backyard has enormous scope for improvement and additions. Heating and cooling tame indoor climes, there’s

Surrounded by pretty gardens on about 2099 square metres, this handsome, spacious abode is a slice of elegant country style. It has four bedrooms, three up one end sharing a bathroom. The main bedroom has walk-through wardrobes and an en suite with an oval spa and a granite-topped timber vanity unit. There’s also a study – or fifth bedroom. A large tri-zone living hub encircling the kitchen includes a carpeted lounge room with raked timber ceiling and a wood heater under a traditional mantel. The kitchen, all class, has timber cabinetry, granite benches and splashback and all the mod cons. Natural gas hydronic floor heating and ceiling fans ensure climate control. A large, covered pergola is the spot to soak in gardens and views, with sheds, chook pen, cubby house, town and tank water and a double carport being other outdoor treats.

Built in the ’60s when they were made to last, this solid house on about 500 square metres just needs a spruce-up to turn it into a stylish place. It’s right in the centre of town, within a hop, step and jump of the shopping precinct, bus stop and medical centre. The house has three bedrooms (each with wardrobe) that share an all-white bathroom with modern vanity unit. The carpeted lounge-dining room, through multi-paned double doors from the entry hall, has a ceiling fan and a wood heater perched on a brick hearth. The kitchen has olive green wall paint with white trim, white cabinetry, plenty of bench space and an electric upright cooker. The good-sized backyard has a garden shed, and there’s a drive-through carport with workshop facility.

the lights of Sunbury, West Gate Bridge, city skyline, ships on the bay, Mt Martha, You Yangs, Geelong and beyond put on night-time fireworks. And daytime views are similarly gob-smacking, unique and priceless. SPORT Kangaroo legend’s return fills a football hole in his heart After a year out of the game, former Riddell District Football League premiership player and coach Chris Meacham was itching to get back into the sport. Having stepped down as coach of the Sunbury Kangaroos in 2015 due to health issues following an accident, Meacham spent many a weekend as a spectator this year. He thought about coaching again and fielded offers from senior, junior and masters sides. He decided coaching would be too much, but found a new role to suit – football manager at his old club, the Sunbury Kangaroos. “I had been tossing and turning whether to get back into it,” Meacham said last week as he returned from holidays to a football meeting.

“There was some good coaching offers and some assistant offers, but it got too much. When I left coaching, I was burnt out and that scared me a little. “I thought, why not go back to the local club and stay involved?” Meacham takes over the role from Mick Streiff, with Streiff still on board to help. Having coached the club and played a role in recruiting before, Meacham has a head start on what’s in front of him. He said the salary cap and points system was something he had to get his head around. Meacham said not having football this year had left a hole in his life. Meacham was injured when he and former Kangaroos teammate

Lucas Dowson ran in front of a moving ute to save their kids. The accident left Meacham with little use in his left arm. He said that being unable to work had made the football environment even more important. “I watched six or seven matches and the Kangaroos were so welcoming at the club,” he said. “I also watched the grand final. I love the league and I need football.” Kangaroos president Allan Walters said getting Meacham back at the club was a win for everyone. “Having the year off, he’ll come back in refreshed,” Walters said.

“He’ll handle the general stuff like clearances, contracts and a lot of the game-day management. Mick will be on hand and work with Chris … we want to make sure we get it right. “When we recruited him originally, we knew he was a quality person. He brings back experience and knowledge of the game. Everyone is happy to have him back.” Meanwhile, the Kangaroos are looking for a netball co-ordinator and coaches for all four senior teams. Expressions of interest to: vals56@live.com.au. Closing date is November 7. Tara Murray

Tigers fired up by youth and finals ambition

Riddell captain-coach Mick Allen is slowly adjusting to the pace of local cricket. (Wayne Hawkins)

Riddell goes in strong By Tara Murray Riddell is hoping a little bit more stability in the batting order will help players move past the first week of the finals in Gisborne and District Cricket Association. Just as it has the past two years, Riddell enters the McIntyre Cup with one of the strongest lists in the competition. Most of the squad from last year have stayed on, and they’ve picked up the biggest off season recruit in Mick Allen. Allen dominated with the bat in both premier and Victorian Sub-district Cricket Association competitions, getting top honours in both. The Riddells Creek resident decided to move back to local cricket to spend more time with his family, and to cut out the travel. “It’s made a massive difference playing here; I get home and get to see the kids more.” Allen will be captain-coach this season, taking over from Heath Wadden, who remains on as a player.

Allen, who is coaching for the first time, said he is slowly adjusting to the slower pace of local cricket. “This is a slower pace. “It’s new to me; I haven’t coached before,” he told Star Weekly. “I’ve done a fair bit of captaincy … I’ve had some good mentors along the way.” Allen said it had been a slow start to the pre-season, with their football counterparts making it through to the Riddell District Football League grand final. “We’ve had a fair few numbers at training, and have a very similar line-up to last season,” he said. “Michael Treweek is heading back to Rupertswood and Cameron Clayton has gone to St Anthonys. “Matt Darby is having his shoulder done, but we are expecting him to play towards the second half of the season. “Jack Baker didn’t play much last season, but will play more this year.

“We’ve replaced the ones we’ve lost,” Allen said. Although there’s been no talk about the side’s late season collapses in the past two years, Allen said he is more worried about what’s ahead. The past two years Riddell has started the season well, before fading after Christmas and losing in the first week of finals. Batting was one area that was inconsistent. “The list is strong, and we’re trying to tweak a few things,” Allen said. “Outside, it did look like we struggled in those areas [batting], and with some stability … I’m hoping everyone will improve 10-15 per cent – we should be right. “Gisborne and Diggers Rest look strong again, and Woodend may have picked up some players. We’ll concentrate on ourselves.” Riddell starts their season on Saturday against Sunbury. In other matches, Woodend hosts Romsey, Diggers Rest Bulla faces the newly promoted Rupertswood, while reigning premiers Gisborne travel to Bacchus Marsh.

Having exceeded expectations in its first season in Gisborne and District Cricket Association B grade, Lancefield is aiming to make the finals in the new season. The Tigers missed finals last season by little more than a point even though most of the players were new to playing at that level. Tigers coach Luke Barker said they showed they could match it with the top sides, giving them confidence for the new campaign. “To just miss finals and to beat the top three teams in two-day matches shows we were thereabouts,” he said. “It was good for the younger boys to show that they can play at this level. “The challenge is for them to step up and improve another five to 10 per cent.” Barker said some of the Tigers’ younger and better players had plenty of improvement in them. “The Malone brothers, Nathan and Luke, are still young and Matt Bowden is 22,” he said. “They have never played at that standard and kept getting better and better. They want to improve their cricket – they never miss a session. “They are now talking about playing McIntyre Cup … the furthest thing from their minds three seasons ago. They are starting to realise their potential.” While the side had added a lot more depth to the list, Barker said the club was talking to more players. “The unfortunate thing is some boys can’t play every week and I understand that,” he said. “Most weeks we’re always missing one or two players – its’ good to have an extra few players to pick from.” Now knowing what to expect in B grade, the Tigers are aiming higher. “Knowing what we can do, finals are on the agenda,” Barker said. “We’d be disappointed if we didn’t make them. “Sunbury United have come down this year and are still strong, while Wallan came down the year before. “They’ll both be pushing to get back up there and standard will again be really high.” The Tigers start their season on Saturday against Bacchus Marsh. In other matches, Wallan hosts East Sunbury, Sunbury United faces Macedon and St Anthonys plays Ashfield. Tara Murray

39 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 4, 2016

Lions coach calls it a day By Tara Murray Rick Horwood has stepped down as coach of the Sunbury Lions after six years at the helm. Horwood took over at the Lions in 2011, and led the club to four Ballarat Football League grand finals, including one premiership in 2012. The club just made it to the finals the past two years, before taking on the grand final this year against Bacchus Marsh where the Cobras proved too strong, and won easily. In a statement, Horwood said that he had decided that both the club and players would benefit from a new voice. Immediately after the grand final, Horwood had said he wanted to go on, but had since re-thought his decision. He said while the 2012 premiership would always stand out, the work done to rebuild the side, after a number of senior players left at the end of 2013, was something he held dear. “I’m also extremely proud that, after three successive grand final appearances, I was part of a rebuild of the football club in 2014, and 2015, when we gave significant opportunities to the younger home grown Sunbury players – many of whom were still eligible for the under-18s, and a vast majority 21 and under. “I firmly believe that this initiative will hold the Sunbury Football Club in good stead for years … with our 2016 grand final appearance just the beginning of better things to come.” Horwood leaves the Lions with a win-loss record of 70 per cent, with the club reaching finals every year. Of the coaches in the league this year,

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the committees for my appointments and support throughout my time, and even though I’m reluctant to single out individuals, I must thank Braken Fenton and Chris McDonough for their tireless work and support of myself over the last six years,” he said. “Most of all, I would also like to thank the players, particularly the dozen or so who have endured my entire six years as senior coach – and I just hope they [with the entire 2011-2016 playing groups] can take something out of my coaching that will benefit them, not only in their playing futures but also their personal lives.” Horwood told Star Weekly he was unsure whether he would coach elsewhere next season, but had already received offers, and expects to receive more after announcing he is stepping down from the Lions. He said it will have to be the right job for him to coach next year.

Young bloods reach for the stars With the senior grand finals run and won, and the awards handed out, it’s time to salute the next generation of footballers and netballers in the Riddell District Football Netball League with Tara Murray’s under-age grand final wrap. FOOTBALL Under-16 division 1 Gisborne Rookies 10.5 (65) d Kilmore 6.14 (50) Gisborne had to come from behind to the claim the under-16 division 1 premiership. Kilmore led for the first three quarters and looked like they were on track for the win but the Bulldogs hit the front late in the last quarter and kicked away to seal the premiership. Samuel McCaskill kicked four goals for the Bulldogs, while Sam Ramsay, Baxter Slater and Sebastien Bell-Bartels were best for the Bulldogs. Under-16 division 2 Macedon 13.10 (88) d Diggers Rest 9.8 (62). Having finished on top of the ladder, Macedon entered the grand final as favourites against Diggers Rest. For the Burras, it was their first grand final in more than 10 years. The first quarter proved to be the difference, with the Cats kicking out to a 34-6 lead at the first break. The Burras kept in touch for the next two quarters, before the Cats scored three goals to one in the final quarter to ensure the premiership. Brody Jorgensen kicked three goals for the Cats, with Wilem Floreani named the Cats’ best. Baal Patrice kicked three goals for the Burras. Under-16 division 3 Melton 15.13 (103) d Wandong 5.6 (36) The Bloods finished on top of the ladder and showed their intent early on, scoring 7.5 to nil in the first quarter. Wandong never recovered as they struggled to match the Bloods across the ground. The Bloods won every quarter, on the way to an easy win. Johnny Armstrong kicked four goals for the winners, while Lachlan Stewart was named their best. Under-14 Turner seniors Gisborne Rookies 5.6 (36) d Rupertswood 4.5 (29) The last time these teams met, in the final round of the season, the Bulldogs won by just one point. That time, they were playing for top spot – this match was just as close all day. There was no more than five points separating them at any of the breaks. The Rookies scored the last two goals of the game to take the lead, and the win. Jack Keeping kicked two goals for the Bulldogs, with Joshua McDonald named their best. Jordan Flanigan kicked two for the Sharks. Under-14 Turner reserves Melton 6.1 (37) d Kilmore 4.3 (27) Like the Turner seniors’ grand final, the reserves’ grand final was a thriller. Kilmore entered the match as favourites after finishing on top of the ladder. The Bloods had finished third. They led by four points going into the last quarter, and kicked the only goal of the last quarter to seal a 10-point win. It was all single goal-kickers for the Bloods, with Tyler Williams and Conrad Farrugia named their best in the premiership. Under-14 Beatson Macedon 6.5 (41) d Gisborne Rookies 4.4 (28) Macedon completed the perfect season with their grand final win over Gisborne Rookies. The Cats didn’t have it their own way though, with the Bulldogs pushing them all the way. The Cats led by five points at quarter-time, and extended the lead to 13 points at the main break. The Bulldogs scored the only goal of the third quarter to give themselves a chance. But the Cats had other ideas, kicking two goals to one in the final quarter to seal the win. Max Webb and Cody Brand kicked two goals each for the Cats. Under-12 Turner seniors Melton South 2.3 (15) d Gisborne Rookies 0.4 (4)

It was a low-scoring hard slog, with Melton South taking home the premiership. Goals were hard to come by, with neither side able to find the big sticks in the first half. The Panthers scored the first goal of the match in the third quarter, then kicked the only goal of the last quarter to extend their lead, which proved to be the winner. Ethan Sullivan and Bryce Lewis were the two goal-kickers. Under-12 Turner reserves Rupertswood 2.2 (14) d Melton 1.5 (11) Rupertswood came from behind to win the under-12 reserves grand final. The Sharks were held goal-less in the first quarter in a low-scoring affair. They kicked the only goal of the second and third quarters to trail by four points at the last break. But the Sharks held the Bloods scoreless in the last quarter, while kicking one goal of their own, which proved to be enough. Ethan Wallace and Kane Oakley were the goal-kickers for the Sharks. Under-12 Beatson Macedon 5.4 (34) d Sunbury Kangaroos 3.4 (22) Macedon came from fifth to win the under-12 Beatson premiership. The Cats started slowly, and were held scoreless in the first quarter. Kicking two goals in the second quarter, they hit the lead and then extended it at the last change. Two goals to one in the final quarter made sure of a Cats’ premiership. Cats’ Roman Felice was the only multiple goal-kicker, with two goals. William Blake was named best for the Cats. Under-10 competitions don’t score their games, nor have finals. NETBALL 17 and under-Turner Melton South 24 d Rupertswood 19 Best: Ameila Williams-Otutaha Melton South), Grace Kavanagh (nine goals, Rupertswood) 17 and under-Beatson Gisborne 33 d Macedon Junior 13 Best: Laura Potter (Gisborne), Alexandra-May Mumford (Macedon)
